  • TON becomes the exclusive blockchain for Telegrams mini-app platform
    venturebeat.com
The Open Network Foundation, a non-profit supporting the TON blockchain community, has become the exclusive partner for Telegrams mini-app platform. As an expansion of its partnership with Telegram Messenger, TON will become the exclusive blockchain infrastructure powering Telegrams mini app ecosystem and support Telegrams global user base of over 950 million monthly active users.Since the foundation and Telegram announced their joint initiative in 2023, the TON ecosystem has experienced unprecedented growth and widespread adoption. Since then, TON has worked with Telegrams updates to its mini app platform and the use of Toncoin for pay-ins and payouts. And Telegrams advertising platform played a significant role in the growth of TONs network. The new exclusivity agreement deepens the technological ties between TON and Telegram.Unifying on-chain user experience through TON ConnectCentral to this collaboration is adopting TONs wallet connect protocol, TON Connect, as the exclusive protocol for linking Telegram mini apps to blockchain wallets. This initiative provides a simplified user experience where all Web3 mini apps in Telegram will use TON to connect and authorize blockchain transactions. All mini apps utilizing blockchain in any capacity, including custodial and non-custodial wallets, user authorization, on-chain signatures, and the sending and receiving of blockchain-based assets, must implement TON Connect as their exclusive wallet connect protocol in the next month.TON blockchain and Toncoin become exclusive for TelegramFurthermore, Telegram will continue to accept Toncoin as the only cryptocurrency for non-fiat payments made for the assets and services offered by its platform, including Telegram Stars, Telegram Premium, Telegram Ads, and Telegram Gateway, a platform alternative to traditional SMS verification. Additionally, Toncoin will be the only currency used to pay Telegram Mini App developers and channel owners for their earned Telegram Stars and advertisement revenue.Tokenization of digital assets from Telegram platformTelegram plans to tokenize digital assets exclusively on TON Blockchain within the platform, including emojis and stickers, among other digital assets, while also tokenizing limited edition gifts as NFTs.After laying foundational groundwork over the last years, TON is now ready for explosive growth in 2025. The re-energized, deepened, and exclusive partnership with Telegram is an important step in our roadmap, said Manuel Stotz, president of The Open Network Foundation, in a statement. Telegram is the sixth most downloaded app in the world, a beacon for free speech, and the default messaging platform for the global blockchain community. No other blockchain has a comparable distribution vector. As TON continues its global expansion, we reiterate our ambition to empower over 500 million users before the end of the decade.Developers are encouraged to begin the migration process to ensure a seamless transition and avoid user service interruptions. Those who migrate within Telegrams deadline will receive additional benefits from the TON Foundation, including promotional support. Detailed guidelines and FAQ for developers are available here.TON will drive Telegram mini apps. The Open Network Foundation (TON Foundation) is a non-profit organization supported by community contributors to further TONs objectives. Founded in Switzerland in 2023, TON Foundation brings together a diverse range of expertise to support protocol development, help shape the platform, and facilitate ecosystem growth. While an advocate of TONs mission, the foundation does not exercise any authority over TON. TON operates on open-source software, welcomes input and contributions from all individuals, and remains independent of central control.Asked about gaming, Stotz said in a message to GamesBeat, This agreement is significant for gaming on Telegram as it unifies the user experience by standardizing wallet connections. By utilizingTONConnect, weve eliminated the complexities involved with connecting and integrating multiple wallet solutions for gamers and developers. New crypto gamers benefit from the smoother onboarding process of a single, user-friendly interface. For developers, integration becomes much more manageable as they no longer need to accommodate a wide variety of niche wallets. At the end of the day, we want to make entry easier for gamers, and this agreement does just that.Daily insights on business use cases with VB DailyIf you want to impress your boss, VB Daily has you covered. GDC Survey: 41% of devs affected by layoffs in 2024One in ten respondents were laid off last year, with roles in game narrative being the most affected at 19%Image credit: GDC News by Sophie McEvoy Staff Writer Published on Jan. 21, 2025 The Game Developers Conference released its annual State of Games Industry survey today, which found that one in ten developers were laid off in 2024. Overall, 41% of developers were impacted by layoffs last year compared to 35% in 2023.In partnership with market intelligence firm Omdia and Game Developer, the GDC State of Games Industry report surveyed over 3,000 developers on their experiences of current conditions affecting the industry. These include layoffs, job roles, which platforms they're using, working hours, and generative AI.Going back to layoffs, 29% of respondents saw their direct colleagues affected by redundancy than staff in other teams and departments, which was 18%.The majority of those surveyed cited restructuring, declining revenue, and marketing shifts as the main reason for layoffs.GDC asked developers why they thought layoffs continue to affect the industry, with many placing "the blame on specific issues like Covid-era overexpansion, rising production costs, declining player interest, unrealistic expectations for the 'next big hit', poor leadership and mismanagement."While union support among developers remained relatively unchanged during the ongoing wave of layoffs, one-fifth of developers said they'd talked about unionising over the past 12 months. 29% said their companies were supportive of these talks, while 19% were mixed and 12% opposed.19% of game narrative devs surveyed were laid off in 2024The job role most affected by redundancies in 2024 was in game narrative at 19%, despite this segment seeing the most year-on-year growth from 14% in 2024 to 17% today. There was a decrease in developers working for AAA studios, dropping from 18% to 15%. Of that percentage, almost half of developers work at studios with over 250 employees. In comparison, over half of indie developers work for studios with 20 staff or fewer. The majority of developers continue to work 40 hours or less per week, though this has dropped from 64% last year to 57%.13% of those surveyed are working more than 51 hours per week on average, compared to 8% in 2024. When asked why, two-thirds of developers said it was due to self-pressure a slight decrease from 71% last year.Looking at platforms, PC dominated the year with 80% of developers making games for the platform up from 66% the previous year.GDC suggested that this increase could be attributed to the rise in popularity of the Steam Deck, even though it didn't single out the device as its own platform in its survey. When respondents were asked to name other platforms that interest them, almost half said the Steam Deck.As for consoles, PlayStation 5 came out on top with 37% of developers focusing on projects on the PS5 or PS5 Pro compared to 33% for the Xbox Series X|S.80% of devs are working on projects for PC, compared to 66% in 2023However, Xbox outperformed PlayStation in cloud services. 13% of respondents are making games for Xbox Game Pass, with 9% focusing on PS Plus (Extra or Premium).Mobile development increased for the first time since 2020 with 29% of developers in the process of making games for Android and iOS.Surprisingly, web browser development saw a significant jump in interest with 16% of those surveyed working on these games, up 9% from last year.Elsewhere, live-service games were a major topic of conversation with developers being asked whether this genre was worth the risk in light of titles such as Concord, Anthem, and Redfall being taken offline.42% of developers said they weren't interested in developing a live-service game, and there were mixed opinions on the segment as a whole."Many respondents said they saw value in live-service not only on the financial side, but also in player experience and community building," GDC found. "Others noted their concerns about declining player interest, creative stagnation, predatory practices and microtransactions, and the risk of developer burnout."Another issue was the risk of market oversaturation, with developers noting "how tough it is to break through and build a sustainable player base" with the live-service model.

  • Reflector confirms more layoffs after Unknown 9 falls short of expectations
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Chris Kerr, News EditorJanuary 21, 20251 Min ReadImage via ReflectorAt a GlanceThis is the second round of layoffs at Reflector, which is owned by Bandai Namco, in around two months. Unknown 9: Awakening developer Reflector Entertainment is laying off an undisclosed number of employees after ending development on an upcoming project. The Bandai Namco-owned studio said continuing work on the unnamed project, which was in the conceptualisation phase, would have been "unsustainable."In a statement posted on Linkedin, Reflector CEO Herve Hoerdt confirmed the decision will result in some redundancies."This decision correlates directly with the failure of the studio's ambitious and courageous first project, a new IP with a rich transmedia universe. The performance of the release didn't come near the company expectations, after numerous timeline adjustments and investments, both financially and other, and didn't warrant any further exploration in this universe," wrote Hoerdt."Unfortunately, this also affects back-office staff, bringing the support teams in line with the single project approach the studio will adopt for the imminent future. Where possible, staff will be assigned to this project, based on an existing Bandai Namco IP, which is shaping up very well."That debut project was Unknown 9, a fantasy action-adventure title pitched as the first entry in an "intertwining" transmedia universe.Reflector said it intended to create a vast "storyworld" across different mediums, but has now conceded Unknown 9 didn't meet expectations. It's a drastically different appraisal to the one offered last year, when Reflector laid off 18 percent of its workforce but insisted the decision wasn't linked to "commercial success or external pressures."Discussing the latest redundancies, Hoerdt said Reflector will support those impacted with "adequate" severance packages, extended health benefits, continued access to counselling services, and proactive career planning support. He said Reflector parent company Bandai Namco will also continue investing in "Western content for global audiences."Read more about:LayoffsAbout the AuthorChris KerrNews Editor, GameDeveloper.comGame Developer news editor Chris Kerr is an award-winning journalist and reporter with over a decade of experience in the game industry. The last 12 months have seen their share of opportunity and heartbreak for game developers.Industry layoffs have continued, working hours are rising, and investment opportunities are shrinking. But the industry is resilient, as are its developers.The2025 State of the Game Industryreport brings these issues, and how they're impacting the game community, into focus.TheGame Developers Conferencehas released the results of the 13th annualState of the Game Industrysurvey, revealing trends and insights in the game industry ahead ofGDC 2025,which will be held at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center fromMarch 17-21, 2025.Register for GDC 2025: Early Bird Rates End January 23!We surveyed over 3,000 game developers and industry professionals this year (with a 2% MoE), working with our partners at Omdia and Game Developer to analyze the survey data. We found thatmore studios adopt Generative AI, even though its increasingly unpopular among developers. Layoffs have continued, to the point where one in 10 developers have lost their jobs over the past year. Opinions on live-service games are mixed, and severe weather events like Hurricane Milton and the Southern California wildfires are drawing attention to the growing impact of climate disasters. Here are some of the highlights from the2025 State of the Game Industry.Download the Free ReportLayoffs Continue To Ripple Through The IndustryAccording to this years survey, 11% of developers reported being laid off in the past year. Roles in the Narrative field saw the most impact, with 19% of respondents. Business and Finance saw the least reported layoffs, impacting only 6% of respondents.41% have reported feeling the impact of these layoffs, with 29% observing their direct colleagues being let go and 18% witnessing developers on other teams being let go. 4% reported being laid off due to their studios being closed down. When asked about what reason developers were given for these layoffs, 22% were told it was due to restructuring, 18% cited declining revenues and 15% were due to market or industry shifts. Interestingly, 19% were not given a reason for the layoffs they observed.Developers Are Ever Hesitant About Generative AI30% of respondents reported that they believe that generative AI is having a negative impact on the games industry, which is a 12% increase from last year. Developers pointed to intellectual property theft, energy consumption, a decrease in quality from AI-generated content, potential biases within AI programs and regulation issues as the main factors behind their discontent with the technology.More than half of developers surveyed (52%) work for companies that have implemented generative AI and one-third (36%) personally use them. Respondents within Business and Finance Roles in companies were most likely to use Artificial intelligence tools (51%), followed by Production and Team Leadership (41%) and Community, Marketing and PR (39%).PC Game Development SkyrocketsLast year, 66% of developers reported that they were working on games for PC; this year, that number climbed up to 80%. While the reason for this is unclear, it could be at least partially attributed to the rising popularity for Valves Steam Deck. While the Steam Deck wasnt specifically listed as an option for developers to list as a platform theyre developing games for, of the respondents who chose the Other option, 44% of them wrote in Steam Deck as a platform theyre interested in.Interestingly, web browser games are also climbing in popularity, as 16% of developers noted that theyre working on releases for web browsers (compared to 10% last year and 11% the year before). This marks the most interest game studios have in browser games across the past decade.One-Third of AAA Devs Are Working On Live Service GamesOne in every three AAA developers surveyed (33%) noted that they are working on a live-service title. Across the entire survey base, 16% are currently working on a live-service game, and while 13% noted they are interested in developing live service games, 41% expressed that they were not interested at all.Developer opinions of the value of live service games largely vary. On the positive side, developers recognized the financial and community-building benefits of the strategy whereas those who expressed concern with declining player interest, creative stagnation, predatory practices, microtransactions and the risk of burnout. One of the biggest concerns surrounding live-service gaming was market oversaturation, with many developers noting how hard it is to build a sustainable player base. Most Games Are Financed Through Self-FundingMore than half (56%) of survey respondents reported that they have put their own money into funding the creation of their game. Thats nearly double the next most option of project-based or publishing deals, which 28% noted was where their funding had come from. Those who reported that they had utilized self-funding appear to be a good option, as 89% of respondents listed it as being at least somewhat successful for them. Co-development contracts have observed the highest rate of satisfaction, with one-third (37%) calling the method very successful. Accelerators were seen as the least viable option, with 43% calling the option not successful at all. This was followed by Venture Capital at 32% and crowdfunding at 31%.Climate Change Impacts A Notable Number of DevelopersIn 2024, the impacts of climate change continued to be felt across the game industry, with 16% of developers saying they or their company have been impacted by natural disasters. 76% said they havent been impacted whereas 8% opted for the didnt know option. When asked to specify what natural disasters they or their company faced, 73% of respondents referenced floods, hurricanes, storms and other water-related events. Other disasters referenced include extreme heat, wildfires, and earthquakes. The full survey, which includes more insight into the game development communitys thoughts on these topics and a multitude of other facts and details, is available todownload.View the Free ReportGDC returns this March 17-21, 2025, and our Early Rate is currently live (for a limited time)! • WhatsApp will let you share your status on Instagram and Facebook
    www.theverge.com
Meta is integrating WhatsApp into its Accounts Center, as WABetaInfo spotted. The change, which is rolling out globally over the next few months, lets WhatsApp users share status updates across Instagram and Facebook, as well as enable single sign-on.Meta says the link wont be turned on automatically, so its up to you to decide if linking WhatsApp to Accounts Center is something youre into. If you do so, Meta will start using your WhatsApp information to do things like provide, personalize, and improve its products and services, including to show you ads, according to a help page about the change. Image: MetaMetas other apps wont use WhatsApp personal data unless its to determine how many people we serve, keep people safe, or to provide optional features that work across Meta products, the company writes. It also says linking your account wont change the fact that messages are end-to-end encrypted in WhatsApp.Down the line, Meta says it will add the ability for users to go to Accounts Center to manage things like Meta AI stickers or AI-generated avatars created using its Imagine Me feature.

  • The UK government is launching a digital ID mobile app
    www.theverge.com
The UK government is going to launch an app that will allow citizens to digitize their drivers licenses. Science Secretary Peter Kyle announced on Tuesday that the GOV.UK Wallet launching for Android and iOS devices later this year will let users securely store government-issued documents on their phone, allowing them to be accessed immediately instead of waiting for physical versions to arrive in the mail. The wallet will utilize smartphone security features like facial recognition to help protect users' personal data. Veteran cards for former military personnel will be the first documents supported, followed by a pilot for mobile drivers licenses later in 2025. All UK government services that provide paper or card credentials will be expected to offer a digital alternative by 2027. Traditional physical documents will still be available.Along with CDs, the Walkman, and flip phones, the overflowing drawer rammed with letters from the government and hours spent on hold to get a basic appointment will soon be consigned to history, Kyle said in the announcement. GOV.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually.According to Kyle, the new digital wallet app is intended to give UK citizens more control over their own data, making it easier to prove eligibility for welfare benefits and purchase age-restricted products in stores. People in the UK are currently required to present physical identity documents (if assumed to be underage) when clubbing or purchasing alcohol, running the risk of having them lost or stolen. The UK is also launching a new GOV.UK app in summer 2025 that will allow users to access government information, and, eventually, complete tasks like canceling stolen passports and applying for welfare benefits from their phones. There are also plans to add an AI-powered chatbot, imaginatively called GOV.UK Chat, to the app, which TechCrunch reports was co-developed by OpenAI, and to add ways to make payments and receive timely notifications for government services.

  • Reasoning Model: Short Overview and Feature for Developers
    towardsai.net
LatestMachine LearningReasoning Model: Short Overview and Feature for Developers 0 like January 21, 2025Share this postLast Updated on January 21, 2025 by Editorial TeamAuthor(s): Igor Novikov Originally published on Towards AI. Image by the authorWhen LLMs first came out they were kinda like children, they would say the first thing that came to mind and didnt bother much with logic. You had to tell them they should think before you speak. And just like with children even then it didnt mean they would think. Many argued that because of that, the models do not possess real intelligence and must be supplemented with either human help or some sort of external framework on top of an LLM, like Chain of Thought. It was only a matter of time before major LLM developers like OpenAI decided to replicate this external thinking step (see picture below) inside an LLM. After all, its pretty simple create a dataset that contains not just question-answer pairs but the whole step-by-step logic, and train on that. Additionally, it would require more computation resources at inference time, as a model would go through the same step-by-step thinking process when determining the answer.Added thinking step. Image by OpenAIThey natively break down problems into small pieces and integrate a Chain of thought approach, error correction, and trying multiple strategies before answering.O1 spends more time at inference (o1 is 30 times slower than Gpt4o), what a surprise longer thinking time leads to better results!Image by OpenAIReasoning tokens are not passed from one turn to the next only the output. Also, it verifies the solution by generating multiple answers and choosing the best via consensus, and the approach that we used to implement manually. Here is the overall process:Image by OpenAIOne important conclusion is that GPU computation requirements are going to grow as it is obvious that longer thinking time (in tokens) leads to better answers, so it is possible to scale model quality just by giving the model more computing power, whereas before this was mostly true at training phase. So GPU requirements for modern models are going to go significantly higher. These models are thus different and old approaches no longer work. How to work with reasoning modelsInterestingly it is kind of similar to working with an intelligent human:Be simple and direct. State your question clearly. No explicit Chain of Thought. The model will do that internallyHave a good structure: break the prompt into sections using clear markupShow vs tell: it is better to show the model and example of a good answer or behavior than describe it in several thousand wordsNo more need for coaxing, intimidating, or bribing the model nonsenseI can even summarize this into one: know what you want to ask and ask it clearly.Mini vs Full modelsSince reasoning models like o3 consume a lot of tokens during inference it is rather expensive to use them for everything and the latency is not great. So the idea is to delegate the most difficult task high-level thinking and planning, and have faster and more cost-efficient mini-models to execute the plan. They can be used for tasks like coding, math, and science. This is an agentic approach, that allows us to combine best of the both worlds smart but expensive models with small and fast workers. How much better these models are?Much better, and going to get even better soon. For o1 its approaching expert humans in math and coding (see below):MathImage by OpenAICodingImage by OpenAIELO 2727 puts o3 in the 200 best coders in the world. If you are not worried about your job security as a developer its time to start now. This is exactly the job that scales perfectly by adding more computing power and the current rate of progress is not showing any signs of slowing down. What is nextI can only speculate but my take is that for a year or two it is possible to dramatically improve the model quality just by adding more inference computing power and improving training datasets. Adding some sort of memory outside of the context window also seems logical although very expensive on a large scale.I think the next big step really is to implement multiagent architecture on the LLM level, so it can have multiple collaborating internal dialogues, that share the same memory and context. It follows the current trajectory of embedding external thinking tools into the model and also benefits from linear scaling of compute power at training and inference, so I think end of this or next year we will see an LMM, Large Multiagent Model, or something similar. The sky is the limit for such a model so I propose to call it SkyNet.Join thousands of data leaders on the AI newsletter. • Were Only a Few Weeks Into 2025 and Already Theres a New GTA 6 Trailer 2 Release Date Theory
    www.ign.com
2025 is only a few weeks old, and yet weve already seen so much. The announcement of a new Nintendo console. The death and resurrection of TikTok. And now, a new Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 release date theory. This one (believe it or not there are more than a few GTA 6 theories doing the rounds) was sparked into life by another seemingly innocuous GTA Online promo tweet by Rockstar Games. Claim a free Vapid Dominator GT muscle car and more with GTA+, the tweet reads. Members also earn bonuses on Priority FIB Files and Terrorbyte Client Missions, save with Arcade Property discounts, and much more. What information-starved GTA fans were most interested in, however, was the accompanying image, which includes a shot of a metal shipping container with a series of numbers printed on its side. One number is singled out with a slightly enlarged font and a rectangle around it: 2.The numbers Mason, what do they mean?! Image credit: Rockstar Games.Thats all it took for eagle-eyed obsessives to set off on yet another GTA 6 theory brainstorm. The 2 must be a reference to GTA 6 Trailer 2, right? But what if you add up all the other numbers? Does that mean anything?X/Twitter account @GTA6Plus did the math and came up with the number 30. "They made sure to include the numbers in the post," GTA6Plus insisted. "They have to mean something." January 30, 2025 for the GTA 6 Trailer 2 reveal?Theres more to this theory. It turns out the release dates for both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V were announced on a Thursday. January 30, 2025 is a Thursday. Coincidence?Fans have also pointed out that Rockstar parent company Take-Two is set to release its next set of financial results on February 6, so a release date announcement as part of a new trailer beforehand might make sense.Weve been here before, of course. Multiple times. Rockstar released GTA 6 Trailer 1 to record-breaking viewership in December 2023, but it hasnt released a single asset in the 13 months since. The year-long wait for more information has fueled increasingly bizarre conspiracy theories about when Rockstar will release GTA 6 Trailer 2. These have included counting the holes in Lucias cell door net, the bullet holes in the car from Trailer 1, and even analyzing registration plates. But chief among the conspiracy theories is GTA 6s ongoing moon watch, which was, remarkably, proven to have accurately predicted the date Rockstar announced when it would release GTA 6 Trailer 1 last December, but debunked as a hint at the release date for Trailer 2.Crazy? One former developer at Rockstar recently expressed his delight at the many wild conspiracy theories surrounding GTA 6, insisting staff at the studio will be enjoying watching the community go off the deep end.It is remarkable that Rockstar has gone a year without following up GTA 6 Trailer 1 with any new information at all. With GTA 6's fall 2025 release window on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S still on the cards, according to Take-Two, youd expect Rockstar to pipe up sooner rather than later. While you wait to find out, IGN has much more on GTA 6 to check out, including an ex-Rockstar dev who says the studio probably wont be able to decide whether GTA 6 is delayed until May 2025, the boss of Take-Two's coy response on whether GTA 6 is coming to PC, and the expert opinion on whether the PS5 Pro will run GTA 6 at 60 frames per second.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN.
