• Do You Really Need to Add Rest Days Into Your Exercise Routine?
    lifehacker.com
Rest days are a standard part of exercise programs, but theyre not the only way to avoid overworking yourself. Contrary to what a lot of beginner advice says, you don't always need a rest day after each day of exercise, and you can even work out seven days a week if you like. But once you start bending the rules, you'll need to take some extra effort to make sure you allow yourself enough recovery, even if it doesn't come in the form of rest. Recovery is important (whether it comes in the form of "rest days" or not)Most strength training programs either work your whole body and then have you rest the next day, or else they have you split up your workouts so that each muscle group gets a day of restfor example, your arms get a rest on leg day. The idea is to let each muscle recover from a workout before you ask it to do the same thing again, and rest days are a valid way of making sure you're getting some time to recover. But not every activity works this way. Runners, for example, often run every day, and may only take one or two true rest days a week (or, for some, zero). But within that pattern, they will alternate days of hard running (like speedwork, hill running, or long runs) with easy runs that feel less challenging to the body. The easy run days may not be "rest," but they do count as recovery time for an experienced runner.Other sports may fall somewhere in between, but nobody expects to work every body part to exhaustion every day. Even when elite athletes do workouts every day that look killer to us, its because our hard is their easy. You can bet their coaches schedule in enough of the easier workouts to keep the athletes progress on track with minimal risk of injury.Whatever your schedule looks like, those rest days or easy days are there to help us pace ourselves. Too much hard running, if youre not used to it, sets you up for tendonitis and other overuse injuries. And too much exercise of any kind can lead to a syndrome called overtraining where your body may develop flu-like symptoms and disturbed sleep because it just cant keep up with the demands youre putting on it.Theres Nothing Magic About Resting for One DayTaking a single rest day after a hard workout isnt the only way to keep yourself from overtraining. There are a few reasons its a good rule of thumb, though:Resting every other day means only half of your days will be hard workouts. The other half will be rest days or easier days, so the schedule keeps your total workout intensity manageable. An alternating schedule is easy to follow. You don't have to ask yourself whether your recovery work is easy enough, or memorize which exercises work which muscles. You just stay home if it's not a workout day, and you know you're on track.Mentally, its easier to stick to a workout when you enjoy it. Hard workouts arent always fun, and you may need to psych yourself up to try something really challenging. Its okay if you dont feel up to that every day. Having some easier, more relaxing days can help you stick to your schedule.Routines with rest days are easier to schedule around your life. People who work out six days a week have to fit those workouts around everything that's going on in their lives. Having multiple rest days every week means you have more time for work, school, family, hobbies, and anything else that competes for those time slots. If you can accomplish those goals with another schedule, though, feel free to do so. If you enjoy all your workouts, even the hard ones, slowly include more hard days in your schedule. If you feel okay with that, keep doing it! But if you end up sore or fatigued, listen to your body and put those rest days back in. Recovery Doesnt Have to Mean Total RestSome people prefer the term recovery to rest days, because total rest isnt necessarily your goal. After all, lifting a fork to your mouth is a similar action to a bicep curl, so if you just did a heavy arm day, would you be unable to eat? Clearly, some amount of activity is fine on a rest or recovery day. This is where you have to calibrate your own sense of effort. If youre new to exercising and you just did a day of heavy squats, a five mile bike ride is probably not a great choice for the following day. But if you bike five miles to work every day, you should be able to keep doing that even on your rest days. When I did push-ups every day for 30 days, a few people suggested that I was setting myself up for injury by not taking rest days. But as I wrote in that article, I ramped up my fitness very carefully. A few sets of pushups every day became my new normal, and it was no more taxing to me than a bike ride is to a bike commuter. Some days I would try a more challenging type of pushup or I might do more reps than usual; but I balanced out those harder days with, you guessed it, easier days that are closer to my baseline effort level. As you learn your own strengths and limitations, you too can alter your workout schedule according to what works for you. That might mean you only take one or two rest days per week, or it might mean you do mega-hard workouts and then lay low for a few days. If youre getting a reasonable amount of exercise in total, and if you arent getting sore or injured, youre probably doing okay. Now, let me ask some of the specific questions that I know tend to come up in these discussions? Can I walk or do cardio on rest days? Yes, if that's your baseline level of activity. If you always go for a walk after dinner, there's no need to skip that just because it's a rest day. If you want to start adding cardio on your rest days, make sure you're recovering well from whatever you're already doing. Feel free to add in that extra cardio, or other easy movement, a little bit at a time. I also have this guide to figuring out what to do on your rest days. How do I know when I need a rest day? If you can't tell the difference between feeling lazy and needing a rest day, ask yourself: Do I want to skip my workout or do I need to skip my workout? If you feel like you need a rest day, you probably do. It's OK to take a rest day if you feel sick, or if you're unusually tired or busy. A workout is just a workout. It can wait. If you ask yourself this question and decide you just don't want to work out, consider moving the workout to another day or time. Or, if there's really no reason to skip, go do the workout anyway. Any time I feel this way, I always feel better afterward, and I'm glad I got the workout done. But if you're asking yourself this question pretty often, you should probably revisit your workout routine and make sure it's actually working for you. Rest (or recovery) days should be preventative. They keep you from getting too run-down. Do I need rest days if I'm not sore? Soreness doesn't have much to do with recovery, believe it or not. You can be well-recovered but feeling a little sore, or vice versa. On a new exercise program, I'd advise sticking to your scheduled recovery days. After two weeks, that's when you can add in some extra work on those recovery days as long as you're still feeling good. What happens if I don't take my rest day? You might feel a little more fatigued for your next workout. Over time, if you don't take any rest days, you may find you're lifting less weight or performing poorly in workouts. You may notice other effects on your health, like poor sleep. But then again, maybe you'll be fine. As we discussed above, rest days aren't magic, they're just a tool in the toolbox. If you work out every day, but your total amount of work is within your body's limits, you might recover just fine and this becomes your new normal. Pay attention to how you're feeling, though, and add those rest days back in if you feel you need them.

  • My Favorite Amazon Deal of the Day: The Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.Like Apple, Samsung prefers its customers stay within their ecosystem, and offers them a better user experience in return. The Galaxy Buds2 Pro are a good example: They provide higher resolution audio and a better listening experience if used with a Samsung phone. If that sounds good to you, right now you can get the Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro for $99.99 (originally $229.99), thanks to an automatic $80 discount at checkout (look for the green font under the listing price). This is the lowest price they have reached since their release, according to price tracking tools. SAMSUNG Galaxy Buds2 Pro Features: Hi-Fi Sound, 360 Audio, Active Noise Cancelling, HD Voice, IPX7 Water Resistant. $99.99 at Amazon $229.99 Save $130.00 Get Deal Get Deal $99.99 at Amazon $229.99 Save $130.00 Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 2 came out in the summer of 2022, earning good reviews. PCMag's "excellent" review noted they offer good active noise cancellation (ANC), a wireless charging case, and an IPX7 waterproof rating. If you lose them, you can locate your lost earbuds using the SmartThings app. But where these earbuds excel is in their audio quality: Dual drivers on each earbud mean a better frequency range, leading to noticeably strong depth. As I mentioned, those with recent Galaxy phones running at least Android 8.0, One UI 4.0, and 1.5GB RAM will be able to listen to 24-bit audio, giving you more dynamic range and less digital noise than 16-bit audio. If you have other Galaxy products, like a smartwatch or a TV, they support an auto-switching feature, provided those products can run a firmware update from at least July 2022.Even Apple users will actually get better audio than non-Samsung Android owners, since the Galaxy Buds support Apple's AAC codec.

  • Roli finally introduces a larger teaching piano keyboard, complete with AI
    www.engadget.com
Roli just introduced the simply-named Piano at NAMM, a 49-key smart keyboard that's primarily intended for learners, but has some neat bells and whistles for experienced musicians. It features light-up keys across all octaves, to help newbies get a handle on chords. These keys will also glow to show scales, arpeggios and more. Its basically a larger version of the companys beloved Piano M teaching keyboard. For veterans, the Roli Piano offers per-key pitch bend and polyphonic aftertouch, which should make for expressive playing. It also tracks fingers in four different ways while playing. This will allow the keyboard to successfully control MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) instruments. The additional controllable parameters helps narrow the gap between digital and acoustic instruments. This is also a modern tech device, so Roli stuffed in some AI tools. The Piano AI Assistant uses generative AI to streamline the learning process. The company says it can help players get started with drills, teach music history and even go over theory. This tech will be improved upon as the year goes on, via software updates. Speaking of software, buyers also get Roli Studio, which is a collection of instruments and presets. The Roli Piano also offers some neat integration with the companys recently-released Airwave keyboard teaching tool. This theremin-like device tracks a players fingers and sends teaching data to a tablet. The Airwave is also an instrument in its own right, as users can raise their hands like a conductor to create and play sounds. The ways we learn and play music are improving exponentially thanks to innovations like the Airwave, and now the Roli Piano and Piano AI Assistant, Roland Lamb, Founder and CEO of Roli, told Engadget. "Players now have access to the most intelligent and intuitive music system out there. Roli Piano connects via USB-C or wirelessly with Bluetooth. It works with all major DAWs and a whole lot of virtual instruments. Pre-orders are available right now, with shipments going out in May. Early adopters get a serious discount here, as the price right now is $400. However, it goes up to $600 upon official release. Theres also a bundle with the Airwave that costs $650 for early birds, but $950 in May. • Saudi Arabia to invest $600 billion in U.S. over the next four years, crown prince tells Trump
    www.fastcompany.com
Saudi Arabias crown prince said Thursday the kingdom wants to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years, comments that came after President Donald Trump earlier put a price tag on returning to the kingdom as his first foreign trip.Trumps 2017 trip to Saudi Arabiaupended a tradition of U.S. presidents first heading to the United Kingdom as their first trip abroad. It also underscored his administrations close ties to the rulers of the oil-rich Gulf states as his eponymous real estate company haspursued deals across the region as well. The comments from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reported early Thursday by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, came in a phone call with Trump. It marked Trumps first call with a foreign leader since his inauguration Monday. The crown prince affirmed the kingdoms intention to broaden its investments and trade with the United States over the next four years, in the amount of $600 billion, and potentially beyond that, the report said. The readout did not elaborate on where those investments and trade could be placed. The U.S. in recent years has increasingly pulled away from relying on Saudi oil exports, which once was the bedrock of their relationship for decades. Saudi sovereign wealth funds have taken large stakes in American businesses while also looking at sports as well.Saudi Arabia does, however, rely predominantly on U.S.-made weapons and defense systems, which could be a part of the investment. The White House on Thursday issued a statement acknowledging the call, saying the two leaders discussed efforts to bring stability to the Middle East, bolster regional security and combat terrorism.Additionally, they discussed the kingdom of Saudi Arabias international economic ambitions over the next four years as well as trade and other opportunities to increase the mutual prosperity of the United State and the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the statement said, without elaborating. The crown prince, the de facto ruler of the oil-rich kingdom, also spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio early Thursday. On Monday after his inauguration, Trump talked about possibly heading to the kingdom again as his first foreign trip, as he did in 2017.The first foreign trip typically has been with the U.K. but . . . I did it with Saudi Arabia last time because they agreed to buy $450 billion worth of our products, Trump told journalists in the Oval Office. If Saudi Arabia wanted to buy another $450 billion or $500well up it for all the inflationI think Id probably go.Trump offered no breakdown on the sales, though in 2018 in the White House, he famously showed Prince Mohammed a poster declaring $12.5 billion in finalized sales to the kingdom of military weaponry.Thats peanuts for you, Trump told the smiling prince, who chuckled. On a potential trip to Saudi Arabia in Trumps new term, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told journalists Thursday: Im not aware of any plans at this time.Trumps 2017 visit to the kingdom set in motiona yearslong boycott of Qatar by four Arab nations, including the kingdom.Trump maintained close relations with Saudi Arabia, even after Prince Mohammed was implicated in the 2018 killing and dismemberment ofWashington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggiin Istanbul. The kingdom also had been talking for years with the Biden administration about a wider deal to diplomatically recognize Israel in exchange for U.S. defense protections and other support. The $600 billion pledge, which dwarves the gross domestic product of many nations, also comes as the kingdom faces budgetary pressures of its own. Global oil prices remain depressed years after the height of the coronavirus pandemic, affecting the kingdoms revenues.Meanwhile, Prince Mohammed also wants to continue his $500 billion project at NEOM,a new city in Saudi Arabias western deserton the Red Sea. It also will need to build tens of billions of dollars worth of new stadiums and infrastructure ahead of ithosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup.Jon Gambrell, Associated Press

  • The Oval Office Stargate Project reveal was just more tech industry genuflecting
    www.fastcompany.com
Welcome toAI Decoded,Fast Companys weekly newsletter that breaks down the most important news in the world of AI. You can sign up to receive this newsletter every weekhere.Trumps Stargate Project reveal had little to do with realityStargate sounds like a movie, and where Donald Trump is concerned it is indeed mainly a performance.Stargate, a new joint venture formed by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, aims to build up to $500 billion worth of new data centers over the next four years to run large AI models. OpenAIs Sam Altman, SoftBanks Masayoshi Son, and Oracle CEO Larry Elder joined Trump in the Oval Office Tuesday to outline the new project. Trump took to the podium to hitch his administration to the job creation and geopolitical rewards of the current AI boom. The announcement in the Oval was choreographed to look like a public-private partnership, but its not. Trump pledged no federal federal funding or tax breaks; he only talked vaguely about using emergency declarations to smooth Stargates way. (In theory the White House could work with Texas lawmakers to bypass regulatory land-use hurdles, etc.).This is very much a private projectits no different than a big company deciding to [build] their factory in the U.S., and so thats good for America in the sense that it creates jobs, says Abhishek Nagaraj, a professor at the University of CaliforniaBerkeleys Haas business school. This isnt necessarily going to do all the things that weve been asking the government to do in terms of supporting AI innovation, research, etc. within the U.S.The initiative was already well underway before Trumps second term began. Altman has been talking for months about raising trillions to build more data centers for his companys next generation of compute-hungry models. OpenAI and Oracle had already been working together on those data centers, and have in fact broken ground on 10 of them, Oracles Ellison said. SoftBank has been trying to invest in OpenAI since 2023, finally getting its chance last November when it put $1.3 billion into the company. Son pledged to invest $100 billion back in December. So the Stargate announcement now looks like another example of U.S. tech leaders hurrying to curry favor with Trump, in this case by offering him a chance at some unearned political points. Thats not to say the demand for new data centers isnt real. I generally think that there needs to be (and will be) a massive infrastructure buildout to really enable AI to reach its potential, says Anyscale cofounder Robert Nishihara in an email. This has been true of every major technology waveinternet, cloud, mobilewere just at the start. And yet the hardware may play a unique role in this new tech wave compared to previous ones. The generative AI boom owes a lot to the availability of powerful GPUs. The game-changing intelligence gains that led to ChatGPT happened mostly because researchers discovered ways of applying more computing power to large transformer models. With enough GPUs, something remarkable happens (researchers dont know exactly what) deep in the layers of the neural network that results in an alarmingly nuanced understanding of the relationships among words, code, or images. Even more surprising was the discovery that adding more and more GPUs leads to better and better results. Altman is betting OpenAI can ride this scaling law all the way to artificial general intelligence, then superintelligence. If that holds, Nagaraj says, it effectively means that whoever controls the infrastructure will control a lot of the market.Chinese DeepSeek model makes strong case for state-of-the-art AIA small Chinese research lab called DeepSeek has sent shockwaves through the AI world by releasing a new reasoning model called DeepSeek-R1 that rivals OpenAIs o1 model in mathematics, coding, and general knowledge, according to benchmark tests. The model can break down problems into chunks, and scrutinize and verify its own results. DeepSeek reportedly costs 90-95% less to run than OpenAIs o1.Remarkably, the Chinese company open-sourced the models, meaning developers can freely access and modify them for their own uses. In other words, DeepSeek is doing what OpenAI set out to do when it started in 2015: developing open AI models that can be used to benefit all of humanity. OpenAI has since locked down the details of its most capable models, and charged developers fees to use them. So why would DeepSeek give away the value it created with DeepSeek-R1?It helps DeepSeek attract top talent by showcasing their technical capabilities and commitment to collaborative development, says David Bader, a professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The strategy also fosters a developer ecosystem around their technology, potentially accelerating innovation and adoption. In the end it could position DeepSeek for broader influence in both domestic and international AI development, Bader says. DeepSeek has emerged as a leading force in Chinas language model development, surpassing established tech giants like Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance, Bader explains. DeepSeek has also set off a price war among Chinas AI providers.DeepSeek is similar to o1 in some ways. For example the model does lots of computation at test time after its been prompted by a user to begin work on a problem. It can feel its way through various approaches to the problem, following promising pathways while steering away from nonproductive ones. But this doesnt mean that DeepSeek copied OpenAIs work on o1. [T]he core knowledge for building these models is taught in universities and discussed openly at conferences, Bader says. When developments like OpenAIs o1 model emerge, its natural for other implementations like DeepSeeks R1 to follow, as researchers worldwide build upon shared technical foundations.Accenture: More AI budget should go to training humansAccenture, which helps enterprises adopt AI, is out with results from its latest round of survey work on executive and worker views on AI deployment in 2025. • LEGO Minimoog Synth sports a Gorgeous 1:1 Scale Design With Playable Keys and Rotating Knobs
    www.yankodesign.com
The original Minimoog, first sold in the 1970s, revolutionized the way music was made. Before it came along, synthesizers were massive, complicated beasts that stayed tethered to studios. The Minimoog was portable, easy to use, and brought electronic music into the hands of any musician who dared to experiment. Suddenly, prog-rock, funk, jazz, and disco had a whole new palette of sounds to play with, and the world of music hasnt been the same since. This LEGO Minimoog pays tribute to that iconic machine.LEGO builder Eliot Obrien took this legendary instrument and reimagined it on a 1:1 scale, complete with details that would make any synth enthusiast smile. Rotating knobs? Check. Pitch wheels? Of course. The keys? Fully pushable, naturally. And in an inspired touch, the rear control panel opens up to reveal the circuits inside, a nod to the heart of the original Minimoogs magic.Designer: Eliot ObrienThe process of assembling the set feels oddly poetic, like youre channeling the spirit of an engineer designing the instrument for the first time. Each piece snaps into place with purpose, as if youre connecting to the energy of Robert Moog (creator of the Moog synth) himself. Youre building a modular synth, whats more modular than a LEGO brick, eh??Whats wild is how much the Minimoog shaped music culture. Artists like Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, and Herbie Hancock were pioneers in using its warm analog tones to push their creative boundaries. Even now, decades later, its sounds can be heard in genres as far-flung as EDM and hip-hop. This LEGO version somehow captures that impactit feels alive, like a miniature monument to the synths enduring influence. The LEGO recreation stays very true to its original. Aside from the fact that its a perfect 1:1 representation, every aspect of the LEGO Minimoog is interactive. Its deck flips up to reveal the circuitry at the back. The keys can be pushed, knobs turned, and mod/pitch wheels rotated. The synth comes in the perfect color combination too, capturing the wooden outer construction as well as every single component down to the screws and the capacitors in the back panel circuitry.Obrien (who built this MOC or My Own Creation) hasnt specified how many parts this build requires, but my guess is that given the wood paneling uses multiple layered bricks (and the circuitry at the back is exceptionally detailed), this build should easily average in the 2000+ brick mark. If youre in that niche intersection of being a music nerd and a LEGO enthusiast, theres no build thats more apt than this brick-based Minimoog. Its currently up on the LEGO Ideas website as a submission, and is accepting votes from the broader public. Almost near the halfway mark with 4,740 votes, the submission is well on its way to hitting the 10k vote mark, following which LEGOs internal team just might turn it into a retail box set. If youd like to see that happen, cast your vote on the LEGO Ideas website here! The post LEGO Minimoog Synth sports a Gorgeous 1:1 Scale Design With Playable Keys and Rotating Knobs first appeared on Yanko Design.
