• Rivian will add hands-free driver assist to vehicles this year, eyes-off next year
    www.theverge.com
Rivian is planning to launch a hands-free driving assistant system for its electric R1T and R1S vehicles later this year, followed by an eyes-off version in 2026, reveals Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe in a press roundtable interview according to a post on Rivian Forums and reported by Electrek. The first part of the system sounds like it will work similarly to Fords Blue Cruise or GMs Super Cruise software, which are Level 2 assistants that only work on highways fully mapped by each manufacturer. Its unclear if current Gen 1 and Gen 2 Rivian vehicles will support the upcoming hand-free assistant software or if it will come to upgraded models or the upcoming R2 SUV.1/81/8RelatedGen 2 vehicles already come with exclusive features like matrix headlights and an upgraded light bar that can change colors, which Scaringe says could be used as an indicator to let others know a Rivian is operating autonomously, according to a Rivian Forum user. Gen 2 vehicles also come with a newer Rivian Autonomy Platform, which might mean Gen 1 vehicles arent going to get some of the upcoming advanced ADAS features.Currently, Rivian trucks have available Driver Plus advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) that work similarly to Teslas standard Autopilot software in that they enable lane keeping and auto speed up / slow down on highways. However, like other Level 2 systems, you still need to pay attention to the road.In an email to The Verge, Rivians product communications manager, Courtney Richardson, confirms Scaringes comments about the upcoming ADAS upgrades in the interview yesterday. Richardson says there are no further details to add at this time. Currently, only Mercedes-Benz ships a Level 3 autonomous system that works in some states in the US, which allows drivers to look away from the road.

  • Researchers at Stanford Propose a Unified Regression-based Machine Learning Framework for Sequence Models with Associative Memory
    www.marktechpost.com
Sequences are a universal abstraction for representing and processing information, making sequence modeling central to modern deep learning. By framing computational tasks as transformations between sequences, this perspective has extended to diverse fields such as NLP, computer vision, time series analysis, and computational biology. This has driven the development of various sequence models, including transformers, recurrent networks, and convolutional networks, each excelling in specific contexts. However, these models often arise through fragmented and empirically-driven research, making it difficult to understand their design principles or optimize their performance systematically. The lack of a unified framework and consistent notations further obscures the underlying connections between these architectures.A key finding linking different sequence models is the relationship between their ability to perform associative recall and their language modeling effectiveness. For instance, studies reveal that transformers use mechanisms like induction heads to store token pairs and predict subsequent tokens. This highlights the significance of associative recall in determining model success. A natural question emerges: how can we intentionally design architectures to excel in associative recall? Addressing this could clarify why some models outperform others and guide the creation of more effective and generalizable sequence models.Researchers from Stanford University propose a unifying framework that connects sequence models to associative memory through a regression-memory correspondence. They demonstrate that memorizing key-value pairs is equivalent to solving a regression problem at test time, offering a systematic way to design sequence models. By framing architectures as choices of regression objectives, function classes, and optimization algorithms, the framework explains and generalizes linear attention, state-space models, and softmax attention. This approach leverages decades of regression theory, providing a clearer understanding of existing architectures and guiding the development of more powerful, theoretically grounded sequence models.Sequence modeling aims to map input tokens to output tokens, where associative recall is essential for tasks like in-context learning. Many sequence layers transform inputs into key-value pairs and queries, but the design of layers with associative memory often lacks theoretical grounding. The test-time regression framework addresses this by treating associative memory as solving a regression problem, where a memory map approximates values based on keys. This framework unifies sequence models by framing their design as three choices: assigning weights to associations, selecting the regressor function class, and choosing an optimization method. This systematic approach enables principled architecture design. To enable effective associative recall, constructing task-specific key-value pairs is critical. Traditional models use linear projections for queries, keys, and values, while recent approaches emphasize short convolutions for better performance. A single test-time regression layer with one short convolution is sufficient for solving multi-query associative recall (MQAR) tasks by forming bigram-like key-value pairs. Memory capacity, not sequence length, determines model performance. Linear attention can solve MQAR with orthogonal embeddings, but unweighted recursive least squares (RLS) perform better with larger key-value sets by considering key covariance. These findings highlight the role of memory capacity and key construction in achieving optimal recall. In conclusion, the study presents a unified framework that interprets sequence models with associative memory as test-time regressors, characterized by three components: association importance, regressor function class, and optimization algorithm. It explains architectures like linear attention, softmax attention, and online learners through regression principles, offering insights into features like QKNorm and higher-order attention generalizations. The framework highlights the efficiency of single-layer designs for tasks like MQAR, bypassing redundant layers. By connecting sequence models to regression and optimization literature, this approach opens pathways for future advancements in adaptive and efficient models, emphasizing associative memorys role in dynamic, real-world environments.Check out the Paper. • Oscars 2025: Shaming Emilia Prez Fans Wont Stop It From Winning Awards
    www.denofgeek.com
This article contains Emilia Prez spoilers. The first time I saw Jacques Audiards Emilia Prez, I knew nothing going in other than who was in the cast and that it was a musical set in Mexico. Even the revelation that Karla Sofa Gascn would be introduced as a Mexican drug cartel leader who would simultaneously bribe and threaten Zoe Saldaa into helping her gender transition was a surprise. I imagine many such folks who discovered the film on the festival circuit last summer or in early fallmine was at the New York Film Festivalhad similar reactions to a movie which might go down as the textbook definition of a big swing. Here is a French film by a cisgendered (straight) Frenchman shot almost entirely in the Spanish language about reprehensible people (murderers and the corrupt attorneys) who genuinely find the ability to grow for the betterbut never be absolved. And all with a quirky, left-of-center approach to musical numbers.I understand the impulse to admire the audacity because I had it that evening, even as the final climax of the film, where Gascns Emilia Prez dies in a fiery explosion, left me unsatisfied. On the one hand, it is true she got to live her true self, but until the finale had never paid a price for the heinous crimes of her past life. On the other, it was a clear cut case of a film indulging in the bury your gays trope in fiction where LGBTQ+ characters have historically been killed off in a way that builds up the cisgendered characters through their grief (see: Rent, The Childrens Hour, etc.).This would become the tip of the iceberg. While the film was generally well received by the insular bubble of cinephiles who attend festivalsincluding the Cannes Film Festival jury, which awarded Emilia Prez its Jury Prize and Best Actress for its whole female ensembleit would prove radioactive to social media users on TikTok, X, and other social media platforms whose more diverse lived experiences greeted Emilia Prez like the second coming of Ace Ventura.Beyond just the problematic nature of killing your trans protagonist at the end, Emilia Prez has come under intense scrutiny for a host of criticisms: GLAAD called its representation of trans people a step backward, though Gascn is herself trans. PinkNewsWe are still immersed in the violence in some areas, Mexican screenwriter Hctor Guilln posted on X. You are taking one of the most difficult topics in the country, but its not only any film, its an opera. Its a musical. So for us and many activists, its like you are playing with one of the biggest wars in the country since the Revolution [in the early 20th century].These and more are genuine criticisms that are worthy of being added to the discussion of a film which initially was being evaluated merely for its ambition, or emotional heft as a piece of melodrama. Yet whats interesting about the online feeding frenzy around the movieit currently enjoys an abysmal 2.5 score on Letterboxdis how counterintuitive it has been at thwarting Emilia Prezs momentum in the awards season. In fact, the film just earned 13 nominations at yesterdays Oscars nominations, the most ever for a foreign-language film. This in turn has only heightened the controversy in the last 24 hours, with many lamenting this is Green Book all over again. Its an interesting comparison, because as someone who much more vocally rooted against Green Book winning Best Picture in 2019, I see parallels that Emilia Prezs fiercest critics might not anticipate: mostly in how little good it does to vilify the Oscar voters, admirers, and otherwise mere Netflix users who like the movie. A thin line is being drawn where the implication seems to be that if you like the movie you are transphobic, racist, a fake progressive (also read: neo-liberal), or are merely enabling those who are.Suggesting likeminded folks are being morally bankrupt, or progressive in the wrong way, can have a habit of causing those you disagree with to dig in their heels. It can cause them to champion the art you hate all the more. This occurred when I joined in the chorus of championing Roma or The Favourite, or BlacKkKlansman over Green Book, and it very well seems to be happening again in the narrative around Emilia Prez.Is Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro willfully perpetuating negative stereotypes about his native country when he told Audiard, I, as a Mexican, adore melodrama and adore the telenovela, the pitch of melodrama and for me your view of Mexico was hypnotic and beautiful? Is James Cameron a bad ally to say, [Emilia Prez is] just not like any other film thats ever been made; its bold, daring, a vision? We imagine many readers will say yes. And it is fair to hate the movie; the film is most certainly a French outsiders perspective on its issues and is open to criticism for its many blindspots. Its inauthenticity certainly wore differently on my second viewing. But to second-guess the reasons, motives, or basic morality of those who enjoy the movie creates the exact kind of momentum that will cause Oscar voters to entrench their opinion.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Consider Mark Harris, journalist and author of Five Came Back and Mike Nichols: A Life. In 2019, he wrote for VultureGreen Book regressive and ultimately a film unworthy of Best Picture. Yesterday he posted on Bluesky: A few years ago, when I covered the Oscars regularly, I wrote a long piece about Green Book, which I really disliked, doing my part to make it the villain of that awards season. So did a lot of other people who shared my feelings. Emilia Prez haters: you might want to look at how that turned out.He added, Trashing a movie you dont like is fine, but when you move on to trashing what you presume are the rationales or motives or predilections of the people who like that movie, you have irretrievably lost the fight. In other words, the cacophony of outrage might make Emilia Prez winning Best Picture a reality.

  • Section 31 Just Made the Star Trek Timeline Even More Confusing With Khan Callback
    www.denofgeek.com
Giri hasnt been mentioned in previous Star Trek entries, so its hard to know exactly how she relates to Khan. It seems likely that shes one of the other Augments who followed after Khan, ruling as an absolute ruler without achieving any of the peace that marked his reign. However, Aloks description of sleeping for centuries with a small band of others recalls Khans experience on the Botany Bay.The more confusing element may be the basic timeline itself. Most of Trek history placed the Eugenics Wars in the 1990s, even as it put the world of Star Trek in an alternate reality instead of an extension of our own world. However, in the Strange New Worlds episode Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Kirk (of the Paul Wesley variety) and Laan found Khan as a child in 2012, well after he was supposed to have ruled a large portion of Earth as an adult. That episode puts Star Trek on a sliding timescale, suggesting that the Temporal Cold War seen in Enterprise and referenced in Discovery changed the exact dates of certain events. However, Aloks story clearly takes place on the original timeline. There are a few different ways of explaining this. Section 31 continues the story began in Discovery and, after Discos distinctive Klingons appeared in an incursion outside of the Prime Universe in the series finale of Lower Decks, some have suggested that the show takes place in a different timeline than the main Trek shows. Thus, the Temporal Cold War altered version of events in SNW might be in one universe, and Alok, Section 31, and Discovery in another.Others might point out that the Temporal Cold War created a sliding, unfixed timeline, which doesnt necessarily hold events at a certain point. And so, Alok may very well have fought with Khan in the 1990s and Kirk and Laan may have found kid Khan in 2012 without any contradiction. Finally, it might just be sloppy writing, which is pronounced in the very bad Section 31, but not necessarily unique to this movie. Worf taught us how to deal with canon contradictions in the great Deep Space Nine episode Trials and Tribble-lations, when his crewmates noticed the differences between smooth-headed TOS Klingons and ridge-headed Klingons like himself: We do not discuss it with outsiders. So instead of worrying about canon and dates, its probably better to just take the events at face value.Thats especially true because theres value to Aloks story. Weve heard a lot about Khan, but the Eugenics Wars raged across the entire planet and brought humanity to its low point, the point right before Zefram Cochrane created humanitys first warp-capable ship and caught the attention of the Vulcans, as seen in Star Trek: First Contact. But we dont spend enough time thinking about the people caught in the crossfire, the victims of the Eugenics Wars whose suffering made way for humanitys advancement.

  • iPhone 17 Pro: Seven new features are coming later this year
    9to5mac.com
This year is set to be big for the iPhone, with a compelling new iPhone SE 4 in the spring and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air in the fall. But what about Apples flagship Pro models? Here are seven new features coming to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max this September.24MP front-facing cameraThe iPhones cameras get better every year, but often Apples big improvements focus on the rear cameras. With the full iPhone 17 line, though, Apple will upgrade the front camera from a 12MP sensor to a brand new 24MP sensor, which should bring big improvements. Its about time for the selfie camera to get closer in quality to the iPhones rear camera.A19 Pro chipApple will once again upgrade its new iPhones with a new and improved A-series chip. This year that will be the A19 Pro chip.Apples very best silicon will be reserved exclusively for the 17 Pro and Pro Max. Though the new 17 Air model is expected to win over a lot of Pro users, it will feature the standard A19 chipjust like the base iPhone 17.12GB RAM, the most ever in an iPhoneThe advent of AI has made RAM in Apples devices increasingly important. iPhone 15 owners know this better than anyone, since RAM limitations made the device incompatible with Apple Intelligence.Apple plans to give its 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models 12GB of RAMthe most ever in an iPhone. This is a nice 50% improvement from the 16 Pros 8GB of RAM, which is what the standard iPhone 17 and 17 Air will be limited to still.Apples in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chipApple has for years been working on developing two of its own modems: one for 5G, and one for Wi-Fi. Now, both projects are nearing the light of day.The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to use Apples new combo Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, and possibly the rest of the lineup too.Only the 17 Air, however, will get Apples in-house 5G modem, with the Pro models sticking with Qualcomms more advanced modem for another year.Larger rectangular camera bumpLike Apple did with this years 16 Pro models, the company is ready to double down on its Pro line as being especially optimized for camera use.The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will reportedly boast a larger rectangular camera bump. Presumably this will enable some new benefit. It sounds like the top portion of the Pro models may feature a full-width aluminum design. The bottom half, however, will retain its standard glass back for wireless charging.Redesigned frame with aluminumThis is an especially curious one: the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are getting a redesigned frame, with aluminum replacing titanium.Apple just recently introduced titanium to the iPhones Pro models in 2023, so the shift to aluminum is interesting. Well have to wait to hear Apples reasoning for the transition.Improved cooling with vapor chamberFinally, the full lineup is expected to get improved cooling systems, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max exclusively boasting a vapor chamber plus graphite sheet. No doubt this move is a reflection of Apple Intelligences importance to the iPhones future. AI not only requires more powerful chips and extra RAM, but better cooling to maintain max performance too.iPhone 17 Pro features: wrap-upThis list of iPhone 17 Pro features reiterates my belief that this years purchase decision will be harder than ever. The ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air sounds very exciting. But there might just be too many sacrifices Pro users would have to make to switch over.Which iPhone 17 Pro features are you most excited about? Do you plan to buy the 17 Air or stick with the Pro? • Trump Signs Executive Order Banning Woke AI
    futurism.com
Wokeness was apparently keeping AI down. Guardrails GonePresident Donald Trump's second administration is all-in on AI just not the woke kind.Amid his weeklong flurry of executive orders, the real estate mogul-turned-president suggested in his latest that wokeness is, essentially, keeping AI down."To maintain this leadership, we must develop AI systems that are free from ideological bias or engineered social agendas," the new AI order reads. "With the right Government policies, we can solidify our position as the global leader in AI and secure a brighter future for all Americans."Titled "Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence," this new order follows after Trump revoked the Biden Administration's 2023 AI safety order, which was intended to make sure these systems don't harm national security or humanity itself.Revoking that order as one of his first acts as president sent a clear signal that Trump is following along with the GOP's 2024 party platform that supported "AI development rooted in free speech and human flourishing," as opposed to the prior administration's insistence on countering "irresponsible use [that] could exacerbate societal harms such as fraud, discrimination, bias, and disinformation."Now we're getting a taste of what that looks like in practice: Trump's sweeping action against anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)that's already started a purge within the governmentwill be a key component of his AI policy, too.Go For WokeThis order's mentions of ideology in AI also seem like they could have been inspired by Trump advisor Elon Musk, whose own "anti-woke" chatbot was builtunder a similar directive.Anyone who's used Musk's "Grok" chatbot knows, of course, that it's failed spectacularly at its "anti-woke" aims so much so that it actually appeared to endorse Trump's rival in the election, Kamala Harris. Were things going well between the billionaire pair, it seems highly plausible that Musk would take credit for pushing his anti-woke AI agenda onto the president. Given that he just ticked off a bunch of his fellow flunkies for criticizing Trump's $500 billion AI investment deal, however, he's doing no such thing.Hilariously, Trump dismissed his advisor's trash-talking by noting that Musk "hates one of the people in the deal" a snide reference to Musk's antipathy toward OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who started that company with the South African-born businessman nine years ago before the two had a severe falling out. While there's no telling who or what is actually writing these rapidly-released executive orders, Trump's devil-may-care attitude about Musk's criticisms could be why he's chosen to include language that seems inspired by the advisor's own pet projects or maybe they just all hate "woke."More on Trump and AI: Trump Admin Accused of Using AI to Draft Executive OrdersShare This Article
