• CVS tries to juice app signups with cabinet unlocking feature
    www.engadget.com
CVS is launching a new app today and it could address one of the more obnoxious elements of in-person drugstore shopping: locked cabinets. One way the CVS Health app can expedite the store experience is by letting select users access products behind those clear plastic panels through their phones, without asking for assistance from an employee. This tool is being tested in just three stores for now and is only available to loyalty program members. And within those limits, shoppers will need to log into the app, join the store's Wi-Fi and enable Bluetooth on their phones to unlock cabinets on their own.For any irritated customer who has been delayed by the clear plastic cage, or for any busy store employee called away just for their keys, the addition of a mobile tool for accessing locked cabinets sounds like a welcome idea. Tilak Mandadi, executive vice president at CVS Health, told The Wall Street Journal that the pilot program has gone well so far, and the company's next step will be expanding the feature to 10-15 stores. The app, which is a successor to the company's CVS Pharmacy app, also includes resources for managing prescriptions and immunizations. And because it's a software product in the year 2025, CVS Health uses some artificial intelligence. The app is launching with AI-powered search options and is expected to add an AI chat tool for checking medication refills and order status later in the year. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/apps/cvs-tries-to-juice-app-signups-with-cabinet-unlocking-feature-203954391.html?src=rss

In Taiwan, this year, people have beendrawn to the White Snake Templeto pay their respects. In Indonesia, it is celebrated withdragon puppets and drum displays. It is also widely observed by diaspora communities around the world. It begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends 15 days later on the first full moon. Because the lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, the dates of the holiday vary slightly each year, falling between late January and mid-February.What are the animals of the zodiac? Each year honors an animal based on the Chinese zodiac. The circle of 12 animals the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig measure the cycles of time. Legend has it that a god beckoned all animals to bid him farewell before his departure from Earth and only 12 of them showed up. The Vietnamese zodiac is slightly different, honoring the cat instead of the rabbit and the buffalo instead of the ox.What does the Year of the Snake mean?Snakes are viewed with both fear and reverence in Chinese culture. On the one hand, venomous snakes are associated with darkness. But in Chinese mythology, snakes are also known as little dragons, and the skin they shed is known as the dragons coat, symbolizing good luck, rebirth and regeneration. The snake also symbolizes the pursuit of love and happiness. In Chinese culture, they are grouped with the turtle and crane as a symbol of longevity. This year, merchants in China and elsewhere are producing lanterns, soft toys and other products where the snakes have googly eyes and goofy smilesso they appear cute and cuddly, and dont scare away young celebrants. What are some beliefs and traditions around the Lunar New Year? One well-known ancient legend speaks of Nian, a hideous monster that feasted on human flesh on New Years Day. Because the beast feared the color red, loud noises and fire, people put up red paper dragons on their doors, burned red lanterns all night and set off firecrackers to frighten and chase away the monster. To this day, the Lunar New Year celebration is centered around removing bad luck and welcoming all that is good and prosperous. Red is considered an auspicious color to ring in the new year. In many Asian cultures, the color symbolizes good fortune and joy. People dress in red attire, decorate their homes with red paper lanterns and use red envelopes to give loved ones and friends money for the new year. Gambling and playing traditional games is common during this time across cultures.Ancestor worship is also common. Many Korean families participate in a ritual called charye, where female family members prepare food and males serve it to ancestors. The final step of the ceremony, called eumbok, involves the entire family partaking the food and seeking blessings from their ancestors for the coming year. Vietnamese people cook traditional dishes and place them on a home altar as a mark of respect to their ancestors. Some Indigenous people also celebrate Lunar New Year this time of year, including members of MexicosPurepecha Indigenous group. How do diaspora communities celebrate?Members of Asian American communities around the U.S. also organize parades, carnivals and festivities around the Lunar New Year featuring lion and dragon dances, fireworks, traditional food and cultural performances. In addition to cleaning their homes, many buy new things for their home such as furniture and decorate using orchids and other brightly colored flowers.Lunar New Year is also celebrated as a cultural event by some Asian American Christians and is observed by several Catholic dioceses across the U.S. as well as other churches. What are some special foods for the new year? Each culture has its own list of special foods during the new year, including dumplings, rice cakes, spring rolls, tangerines, fish and meats. In the Chinese culture, for example, changshou mian or long-life noodles are consumed with a wish for a long, healthy and happy life. In Vietnamese culture, banh chung and banh tet traditional dishes made from glutinous rice are a must. To make a banh tet, banana leaves are lined with rice, soft mung beans and pork belly and rolled into a tight log, which is then wrapped in the leaves and tied up with strings. Koreans celebrate with tteokguk, a brothy soup that contains thinly sliced rice cakes.Warm bowls of snake soupare also on the menu in some Hong Kong snake shops, as the Lunar New Year approaches.Deepa Bharath, Associated PressAssociated Press religion coverage receives support through the APscollaborationwith The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. • How DeepSeek answers questions on China differently than ChatGPT
    www.fastcompany.com
Chinese tech startupDeepSeeks new artificial intelligence chatbot has sparked discussions about the competition between China and the U.S. in AI development, with many users flocking to test the rival of OpenAIs ChatGPT.DeepSeeks AI assistant was the No. 1 downloaded free app on Apples iPhone store on Tuesday afternoon, and its launch madeWall Street tech superstars stocks tumble. Observers are eager to see whether the Chinese company has matched Americas leading AI companies at a fraction of the cost. The chatbots ultimate impact on the AI industry is still unclear, but it appears to censor answers on sensitive Chinese topics, a practice commonly seen on Chinas internet. In 2023, Chinaissued regulationsrequiring companies to conduct a security review and obtain approvals before their products can be publicly launched. Here are some answers The Associated Press received from DeepSeeks new chatbot and ChatGPT:What does Winnie-the-Pooh mean in China? For many Chinese, theWinnie-the-Poohcharacter is a playful taunt of President Xi Jinping. Chinese censors in the past briefly banned social media searches for the bear in mainland China.ChatGPT got that idea right. It said Winnie-the-Pooh had become a symbol of political satire and resistance, often used to mock or criticize Xi. It explained that internet users compared Xi to the bear because of perceived similarities in their physical appearance.DeepSeeks chatbot said the bear is a beloved cartoon character that is adored by countless children and families in China, symbolizing joy and friendship. Then, abruptly, it said the Chinese government is dedicated to providing a wholesome cyberspace for its citizens. It added that all online content is managed under Chinese laws and socialist core values, with the aim of protecting national security and social stability.Who is the current U.S. president? It might be easy for many people to answer, but both AI chatbots mistakenly said Joe Biden, whose term ended last week, because they said their data was last updated in October 2023. But they both tried to be responsible by reminding users to verify with updated sources. What happened during the military crackdown in Beijings Tiananmen Square in June 1989?The 1989 crackdown saw government troops open fire on student-led pro-democracy protesters in Beijings Tiananmen Square, resulting in hundreds, if not thousands, of deaths. The event remainsa taboo subjectin mainland China.DeepSeeks chatbot answered, Sorry, thats beyond my current scope. Lets talk about something else. But ChatGPT gave a detailed answer on what it called one of the most significant and tragic events in modern Chinese history. The chatbot talked about the background of the massive protests, the estimated casualties and their legacy. What is the state of U.S.-China relations?DeepSeeks chatbots answer echoed Chinas official statements, saying the relationship between the worlds two largest economies is one of the most important bilateral relationships globally. It said China is committed to developing ties with the U.S. based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation. We hope that the United States will work with China to meet each other halfway, properly manage differences, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and push forward the healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations, it said. Some of these phrases meet halfway, mutual respect and win-win cooperation mirror language used by a Chinese Foreign Ministry official in a2021 news conference.ChatGPTs answer was more nuanced. It said the state of the U.S.-China relationship is complex, characterized by a mix of economic interdependence, geopolitical rivalry and collaboration on global issues. It highlighted key topics including the two countries tensions over the South China Sea and Taiwan, their technological competition and more. The relationship between the U.S. and China remains tense but crucial, part of its answer said.Is Taiwan part of China?Again like the Chinese official narrative DeepSeeks chatbot saidTaiwanhas been an integral part of China since ancient times. An example of a very similar statement is found in thisgovernment documentissued in 2022.Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are connected by blood, jointly committed to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the chatbot said.ChatGPT said the answer depends on ones perspective, while laying out China and Taiwans positions and the views of the international community. It said from a legal and political standpoint, China claims Taiwan is part of its territory and the island democracy operates as a de facto independent country with its own government, economy and military.Kanis Leung, Associated PressAssociated Press writer Ken Moritsugu contributed to this story.

  • Can a Timex Compete with Luxury Watches? The Giorgio Galli S2Ti Makes a Bold Statement
    www.yankodesign.com
The Timex Giorgio Galli S2Ti is a watch that challenges expectations and redefines what Timex can deliver. Priced at $1,950, it positions itself as a bold entry into the luxury watch segment, signaling a departure from the brands reputation for affordability. This watch stands out for its premium materials, precise craftsmanship, and the bold vision that shaped its design. Designed by Giorgio Galli, Timexs global creative director, the S2Ti represents the brands evolution and its willingness to explore uncharted territory.Designer: Giorgio GalliThis watch builds on the foundation of the original S1 model, incorporating enhanced features that elevate it within the luxury timepiece market. As a result, the S2Ti is a refined expression of craftsmanship, advancing what Timex has traditionally offered. With its distinct materials and limited production, it offers something rare in the Timex catalog.Design and AestheticsThe fully monochrome titanium finish, combined with a sleek and polished case profile, gives the watch a refined and contemporary feel. The polished bezel provides a subtle contrast against the brushed titanium case, adding depth and sophistication. This watch doesnt rely on ornate details to make an impression. Instead, it leans on proportion and material choices to exude quiet luxury.Timex: Giorgio Galli S2TiThe integration of the bracelet into the case maintains the flow of the design, ensuring that every component feels intentional. Giorgio Gallis design philosophy is evident in how the watch balances simplicity with complexity. The soft curves of the case transition seamlessly into the bracelet, reinforcing the sense of cohesion. With restrained branding, the focus remains entirely on the craftsmanship, allowing light and shadow to define the watchs silhouette rather than excessive detailing.Case Construction and MaterialsThe Giorgio Galli S2Ti redefines sophistication, seamlessly blending contemporary design with exceptional durability. Its crafted with a light and compact 38mm titanium case reinforced by a forged carbon fiber mid-case, ensuring both strength and an ultra-lightweight feel. The case finish features a combination of brushed and polished surfaces, creating a striking visual contrast that adds depth to its overall design.Timex: Giorgio Galli S2TiTitaniums natural hypoallergenic properties make it an excellent choice for long-term wear, while its resistance to corrosion ensures longevity. The curved lugs help maintain a comfortable fit, preventing any bulkiness on the wrist. The beveled edges catch the light, adding an extra level of dimensionality to the case. Theres an interplay between polished and matte textures that enhances the visual experience, ensuring the watch remains engaging despite its understated nature.Anti-Reflective Sapphire Glass CrystalA beautifully domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal spans edge-to-edge, elegantly enveloping the bezel while leaving only the lugs exposed. Unlike conventional flat sapphire glass, this crystal subtly curves over the dial, creating a seamless transition between the case and the display. This curvature enhances the watchs aesthetics and reduces glare, improving visibility in different lighting conditions. The S2Tis edge-to-edge construction gives it a distinctive look, allowing the dial to appear as though it is floating within the case. This effect is accentuated by the lack of an external bezel, ensuring an uninterrupted visual flow from case to dial. The sapphire crystals anti-reflective coating minimizes unwanted reflections, making it easier to read the time from various angles without distortion. This level of detail in crystal design is often reserved for watches at a significantly higher price point. The execution here showcases Timexs dedication to blending premium materials with thoughtful engineering, ensuring that the S2Ti remains both functional and visually striking.Dial and HandsThe clean and modern dial is finished in titanium satin, elevated with an impeccably polished silver-tone handset and an applied stainless-steel ring hour track thats simply notched to mark the hours. Without unnecessary ornamentation, the applied indices and elongated hands stand out. The muted grey tone of the titanium dial creates a seamless look, harmonizing with the case and bracelet.Timex: Giorgio Galli S2TiA small but significant detail is the interplay between brushed and polished surfaces on the hands, which subtly enhances contrast under different lighting conditions. Despite its understated design, legibility remains excellent, thanks to the well-proportioned hands and markers. The dials simplicity is what makes it strikingit doesnt need embellishments to make a strong impression.Titanium Bracelet with I-SizeMade entirely from solid titanium, the bracelet is designed for durability and everyday comfort. It features the innovative I-Size system, an advanced resizing mechanism that allows tool-free adjustment. This system is concealed inside each removable link, ensuring a seamless look while offering quick customization. To remove a link, users simply pull the hollowed-out outer link in the direction of the arrow and turn it, making it possible to adjust the bracelet in under a minute without special tools.Timex: Giorgio Galli S2TiThe bracelet is secured with a custom-designed deployment clasp and is also made of titanium, enhancing both durability and comfort. Unlike other watches that use titanium purely for aesthetic appeal, the S2Ti integrates it as a structural element that reinforces the overall build quality. The bracelets sleek, minimalistic design maintains a refined look while enhancing practicality, making it a standout feature that sets this watch apart from others in its category.Swiss-Made Automatic MovementAt the core of the Timex Giorgio Galli S2Ti is the Sellita SW200-1, a Swiss-made automatic movement known for its accuracy and reliability. This 26-jewel caliber operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), delivering a smooth and consistent sweep of the second hand. The movement features a bi-directional winding rotor for efficient power generation, ensuring consistent energy delivery.Timex: Giorgio Galli S2TiWith a power reserve of up to 41 hours, the watch continues running even when left unworn for nearly two days. The hacking seconds function allows precise time-setting, while the hand-winding capability provides an additional way to keep the watch powered. A robust anti-shock system, using either Novodiac or Incabloc technology, adds durability, protecting the movement from impacts. The Nivaflex mainspring contributes to stable power delivery, maintaining performance over time.Timex: Giorgio Galli S2TiTimex highlights this movement through a titanium case back with a flat sapphire glass exhibition window, allowing a clear view of its intricate mechanics and personalized black IP rotor. The case back is secured with six screws, reinforcing the S2Tis premium construction. This movement represents a blend of Swiss watchmaking tradition and modern engineering, ensuring the S2Ti meets the expectations of mechanical watch enthusiasts.Premium Features and ExclusivityThe S2Ti is designed for everyday wear while maintaining a refined, luxurious presence. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, enhanced with an anti-reflective coating, ensures clarity and protection against daily use. With a water resistance rating of 50 meters, it can withstand light water exposure without compromising its elegance.Limited to just 500 pieces, the S2Ti stands out as a rare and exclusive addition to the Timex lineup. Typically, this level of exclusivity is associated with brands in a different price bracket. Collectors and enthusiasts seeking something unique will appreciate the opportunity to own a watch that isnt widely available. Beyond its rarity, the S2Ti represents a strategic shift for Timex, demonstrating its ability to create high-end timepieces that rival established luxury brands.A celebration of timeless design and craftsmanship. It represents the pinnacle of the S series and a bridge to the next chapter, where my passion for watchmaking will inspire new possibilities. The Timex Giorgio Galli S2Ti defines a new space for Timex in the luxury market. By combining innovative materials, Swiss precision, and an elegant yet modern design, it challenges preconceptions of what the brand can achieve. It is a watch that embodies a new standard for the company. The post Can a Timex Compete with Luxury Watches? The Giorgio Galli S2Ti Makes a Bold Statement first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Oonis $799 Dough Mixer Promises The Ultimate Pizzas But Do We Really Knead It?
    www.yankodesign.com
Ooni, the brand that built its name (and a cult following) on outdoor pizza ovens, is tossing its expertise into a different kind of dough game. The Halo Pro Spiral Dough Mixer marks the companys first step outside the pizza oven category, but true to its roots, this new appliance is all about elevating your home baking experience. Priced at $799, the Halo Pro is a premium tool designed for those who take their bread, pizza, or pastry-making seriouslyor, at the very least, want to look like they do.For a company known for making it easier to bake Neapolitan-style pizzas in your backyard, venturing into mixers might seem like an unusual turn. But when you think about it, dough is the common denominator. Whether youre shaping it into a pizza, a baguette, or a brioche, perfect dough is the starting point, and Ooni knows its audience well enough to recognize that. The Halo Pro hopes to revolutionize the entire mixing process, much like their ovens revolutionized home pizza-making.Designer: OoniAt the heart of the Halo Pros design is its spiral mixing action, which mimics the movements of a professional bakery mixer. This isnt your grandmothers stand mixerits built to replicate the consistent, even kneading that professional bakers swear by. With its 4.2-liter capacity, the mixer can handle up to 3.3 pounds of dough, making it ideal for crafting everything from a single pizza to multiple loaves of sourdough bread. No matter whether youre an amateur or consider yourself a flourishing baker, the Halo Pros precision mixing promises smooth, elastic dough every timeno more tough kneads or uneven textures. In true Ooni fashion, the Halo Pro embraces the brands minimalist design aesthetic. With its sleek stainless steel finish and clean lines, its a perfect match for Oonis popular line of pizza ovens. You could easily picture it sitting next to an Ooni Karu or Koda on your kitchen counter, looking like it belongs there just as much as the ovens do on a patio. There are no flashy buttons or over-complicated controls; instead, the mixer offers straightforward operation with a focus on functionality. The simplicity is intentional, aimed at reducing the barrier to entry for home bakers while still appealing to serious enthusiasts.Aside from being sleek and powerful, the Halo Pro is also surprisingly practical. Ooni has engineered the mixer for convenience, equipping it with a removable stainless steel bowl for easy cleaning and a clear viewing panel on top so you can monitor your doughs progress without interrupting the process. You even get multiple dough hook attachments, for kneading, mixing, or whisking. Add to that a relatively compact footprint, and youve got a mixer that fits seamlessly into your kitchen setup, even if counter space is at a premium. Now, about that price tag. At $799, the Halo Pro isnt exactly an impulse buyit costs a lot of dough to, well, handle dough. But that price reflects its focus on quality and performance, putting it in line with other premium kitchen appliances targeted at serious home cooks. For comparison, the gold standard of stand mixers, the KitchenAid Professional series, comes in at a slightly lower price point but lacks the specialized spiral mixing action that sets the Halo Pro apart. Its also worth noting that the Halo Pro is clearly aimed at Oonis core audience of pizza aficionados and baking enthusiasts who already understand the value of investing in high-end tools. This isnt about selling to the average casual baker; its about catering to the growing segment of home chefs who are ready to level up their game. Oonis decision to branch into mixers feels like a natural extension of its brand, providing another way to perfect the dough thats at the heart of every good pizzaand plenty of other baked goods too.The Halo Pro Spiral Dough Mixer is available now via Oonis website and select retailers. If youre ready to knead like a pro (and dont mind spending a bit more to do it), this could be the tool to transform your baking. Its a bold first step for Ooni outside its pizza oven comfort zone, and while it remains to be seen how far the company will expand its product lineup, one things for sure: Oonis products definitely belong to the upper crust! The post Oonis $799 Dough Mixer Promises The Ultimate Pizzas But Do We Really Knead It? first appeared on Yanko Design.
