  • The city of Dallas has the perfect logo. Now its fighting a trademark battle to protect it
    www.fastcompany.com
Dallas is prepared to spend big to protect its logo. In fact, the Dallas City Council voted last week to spend up to $200,000 as part of a federal lawsuit to cancel the trademark of Triple D Gear, a Dallas apparel company that the city argues uses a logo so similar to its own that it causes confusion. One sign of a good civic mark, whether its a logo or a flag, is whether it becomes a symbol of popular expression. People get tattoos of the Chicago flag, for example, but not the flag of Illinois (hence the states efforts to redesign it). The Dallas logo, then, has done its job. Maybe too well. The citys logo, which has been in use since 1972, features concentric D shapes made from three stripes with a stylized tree in the center. Its a great logominimalist and contemporary, even at more than 50 years old. The city considered scrapping the logo in 2015, but ultimately decided against it.From left: the Triple D Gear logo; the city of Dallas logoAccording to the city, Dallas registered its logo as a trademark in 1972 in the state of Texas. It wasnt until 2020 that the city filed for federal trademark protection. By that time, Triple D Gear had already registered its own logo with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Its logothree concentric Ds with a star in the middlehad been trademarked since 2014 for use on apparel and athletic gear. It later filed for another trademark in 2020 for a logo showing just the concentric Ds.When Triple D Gear founder Turo Sanchez appeared on Good Morning Texas in 2018, he said, Basically, we took the city of Dallas logo and we just put a star in it and tilted it. When the shows host joked that theyd get sued by the city, Sanchezs co-owner noted that the companys logo was trademarked. Its a David and Goliath story here, Sanchez tells Fast Company about the legal fight. Its the big man going against the small business and trying to overpower, especially when the small businesses have been doing everything by the book. He says a trial date is scheduled for May 5.The city of Dallas, which tells Fast Company it does not comment on pending litigation, filed a complaint over the apparel companys logo in 2021. The USPTO denied Dallass petition in 2023, according to the Dallas Morning News, which first reported the legal battle, and the city then filed suit. At issue in the denied petition is whether the city has the right to use the logo on clothing, which Triple D Gear specifically included in its trademark application. The USPTO said the city had not provided enough evidence to prove that it had established use of its logo for apparel. In a brief filed last week, the city of Dallas argued that the USPTOs Trademark Trial and Appeal Board committed clear legal error in requiring it to show evidence that it specifically used its logo on shirts, noting that its use of the logo on other goods and services, including uniforms for employees, should be enough to prove its case.Perhaps the best example of an often-imitated and beloved city logo is the I NYmark, designed by Milton Glaser. New York has taken great pains to protect the mark, with the New York State Department of Economic Development sending out countless cease-and-desist letters to knockoff versions and requiring prior approval and a license agreement to use it.Dallas has a license agreement with Southern Methodist University (SMU), which has its own concentric D logo that includes its mustang mascot; Triple D Gear filed suit against SMU in 2023.Dallas has such an iconic logo that its inspired imitators. Whether or not it has the trademark to it, though, remains to be seen. A federal court could decide.

  • Peavey Mart stores are closing: Beloved Canada retailer joins list of dying chains in rough start to 2025
    www.fastcompany.com
Peavey Industries LP, Canadas largest farm and ranch retailer, hasannouncedthe shuttering of all its locations across the country following its filing for creditor protection under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), granted by the Court of Kings Bench Alberta. The closures will impact 90 Peavey Mart stores and six MainStreet Hardware locations, with liquidation sales starting immediately, marking the end of nearly six decades of operations for the Alberta-based company, which has long been a key player in Canadas rural and suburban retail landscape.A profoundly difficult decisionThe news comes as Canadas retail industry faces unprecedented challenges, including low consumer confidence, inflation, rising costs, supply disruptions, and a tough regulatory environmentfactors that have significantly impacted businesses like Peavey. This was a profoundly difficult decision, but one that allows us to explore the best possible alternatives for the future of the Company, said Doug Anderson, president and CEO of Peavey Industries LP, in astatement. For nearly six decades, our customers loyalty, employees dedication, and the resilience of the communities we serve have been the cornerstone of our business. We remain focused on working with our partners and stakeholders to preserve the Peavey brand and the value it represents.Gordon Brothers is managing closing sales and liquidation. The investment and restructuring firm has recently managed affairs for bankrupt American retailer Big Lots and recently made a bid for embattled fabrics chain Joann. Store closing sales will offer discounts of up to 30% off the original ticketed prices on agricultural supplies, farm and ranch supplies, workwear, lawn and garden essentials, hardware, and homesteading merchandise, according toGordon Brothers.A loss to rural communitiesThe closing of the trusted chain will be particularly felt in rural areas. In the city of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, city councillor Laura Morrissettetold CBCits local Peavey Mart was seen as an asset for bringing business the core area. Before being elected as councillor for the city of approximately 11,000 people,Morrissetteeven worked for the retailer. [We] had a mantra at Peavey Mart, she said to CBC. If you cant find it at Peavey Mart, you probably didnt need it anyway.'

  • "New grand entrance" to be added to Muse du Louvre in biggest renovation for 35 years
    www.dezeen.com
French president Emmanuel Macron has announced a major renovation of the Muse du Louvre in Paris, which will add a second entrance and dedicated exhibition space for the Mona Lisa.Named the New Renaissance project, the major renovation of the world's most visited museum was announced by Macron during a visit there earlier this week.According to the French president, an international competition will be launched to find a team to carry out the work.New entrance to be added to eastern facadeProposed to increase the capacity of the Muse du Louvre, the renovation will be the largest update to the building since IM Pei reorganised the attraction and added the landmark glass and steel pyramid in the museum's courtyard in 1989.According to a leaked letter by Muse du Louvre director Laurence des Cars, publishedby Le Parisien newspaper, the entrance under the pyramid is now "structurally unable to cope" with visitor numbers. At the time the building was designed for four million visitors, while last year over eight million people visited the museum. The planned work would increase the capacity to around 13 million annual visitors.Read: IM Pei's Grand Louvre receives AIA 25-year awardAs part of the works outlined by Macron, a "new grand entrance" will be created in the museum's classical eastern facade the opposite side of the building to the pyramid, which is currently the main entrance. This will connect directly to a series of underground galleries built under Cour Carr the courtyard at the centre of the museum.Louvre "will become the epicenter of art history"A dedicated exhibition space for the Mona Lisa, described as its own "special space", will be created to improve the viewing experience and reduce crowding. French newspaper Le Monde reported that this space would be "independently accessible compared to the rest of the museum"."The redesigned Louvre, restored and expanded, will become the epicenter of art history for our country and beyond," said Macron, reported the Associated Press.Although few details have been made public, the renovation is expected to cost around 800 million and complete in 2031.Largely built in French Renaissance style during the 16th and 17th centuries, the palace became home to the royal collection after Louis XIV moved the official royal residence to Versailles. • Outdoor furniture collection has ridges and curves but with minimalist aesthetic
    www.yankodesign.com
If I had my own house and if I lived somewhere where its conducive to do so, my dream is to have a backyard or a patio where I could work, relax, or hang out with family and friends. Alas, I live in a city where condominium living is the most convenient and its too hot and humid to have an outdoor setting. But that doesnt stop me from dreaming to have this someday, probably somewhere else. And of course having well-designed and beautiful outdoor furniture will be a key to this dream.Designer: Tom DixonBritish designer Tom Dixon has created their first collection of outdoor furniture called Groove. It is made up of chairs, armchairs, stools, and dining tables, all well crafted and created to make your backyard and patio look cool and comfortable. The way its designed, you can also use it indoor if you want but it is able to shine best when placed outdoors since thats how it was envisioned by the designer. The items in the collection have raised ridges as well as curved line patterns with circular and oval grooves. The furniture also has angled tubular elements so it becomes more organic. It is created with cutting-edge manufacturing techniques through collaborations with companies that focus on high-tech aluminum production. They used corrosion-resistant aluminum with powder-coated finish so they can last for a long time and can also weather elements like rain and sunshine. The sunlight also plays well with the raised ridge design so the furniture looks better outdoors. The Groove collection is available in two colors: Moss (with a greenish tint) and Putty (with its ecru-ish color). It can be used indoors as well and it comes with cushions so you would feel more comfortable. And if theyre not in use, its easy to stack since it is lightweight and portable. The design is pretty minimalist but with flair so it can fit in with most aesthetic tastes (unless you prefer brighter colors and more bold designs). • How Much Does It Really Cost To Build a Phone: Specs, Design, and Hidden Costs
    www.yankodesign.com
Todays smartphones are pretty powerful devices, and theyre pretty expensive as well. Even without considering foldable phones, a single premium flagship can easily cost above $1,100. Weve actually become so used to such high numbers that the only times we get irked is when theyre almost double that, as demonstrated by foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. But is that really the price of making a smartphone? What goes into building a smartphone anyway? Is it just a matter of buying components and slapping them together in a factory en masse? Do the build costs match the retail prices that companies practically force on consumers? More importantly, how much would it really cost to build your dream phone? Fortunately for us, some people actually tried to answer that as well.Designer: Shea (Concept Central) x MKBHDNothing Comes from Something: MKBHDs Dream PhoneWe all probably have complaints even about our favorite phone brands and models. It might have a design quirk we dont like, a feature were missing, or a piece of hardware we wish were there. At one point or another, weve all wished we could make our phones, just like how some people assemble their own desktop computers. Of course, the Internet is also full of people who do try to make their dream mobile device, but few end up looking as sleek as commercial products.Perhaps it was just for fun, and definitely for some publicity, but Nothing asked the famed Marquees Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, what his dream phone would be. But more than just asking him for specs and features, the young design-centric brand also challenged itself to research and share how much it would actually cost to make that dream phone. The answers were both telling and a little bit shocking.Simply focusing on the bill of materials or the actual cost of components that go into the phone, Nothing reached what at first looked like an acceptable figure. The prices came from Nothings own experience dealing with suppliers, though you can expect some intentional margins of error. After all, many of those prices are confidential, but they do give us ballpark figures to work with.Battery 6,000mAh $13Screen: 6.1-inch 120Hz AMOLED 1440p $35Cameras: 4 rear, 1 front $80Storage: 1TB UFS 4.0, 16GB LPDDR5X RAM $90CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite $190Electronics: Motherboard, antennas, speakers, etc. $15Packaging: $30Design materials: decorations, back glass panel $8Structural parts: screws, vapor chamber, mid-frame, buttons $10Patent Licensing $29Thats a grand total of $500, which actually sounds pretty cheap when you consider that these are specs that match Samsungs and Apples top phones. Its an even more surprising figure when you think how the Galaxy S25 and iPhone 16 might have some of that same hardware and still cost twice as much in retail. A phones BOM might make phone prices look ridiculous and unfair but, unfortunately, theres more to the story than just a shopping list of parts.Hidden Costs, Invisible ValueWhen we cook food ourselves, we often only think about the cost of the ingredients. The same goes for assembling a desktop computer from parts we bought ourselves off shelves or over the Internet. Its a completely different case, however, if were making something for others, especially if they have to be mass-produced. Then we have to take into consideration the costs for things that dont go directly into cooking the food but also the preparation for it and even the tools that we use.One of the biggest hidden costs often cited in making products is R&D, short for Research and Development. It can refer to almost any ancillary activity or expense related to designing a product, but in this particular case, it refers to things like designing the motherboard that changes almost every year, the actual factory costs for both prototypes and final products, as well as the salaries of all the people involved.Images courtesy of: iFixitBy Nothings standards alone, R&D can amount to no less than $20 million, a staggering figure that no consumer will ever pay for. Of course, this cost is split across the devices, so buyers only get a small portion of that. Nonetheless, its quite a shocking number, especially if you take into account that giants like Samsung and Apple have even bigger expenses when it comes to R&D.It might be too easy to write this off as an unnecessary expenditure, but imagine what would happen if a phones circuit boards werent properly designed and tested for the latest and greatest processors? Or if shipping was contracted to a cheap but unreliable carrier? These are the details we often overlook when considering the total cost of building a phone, but these are the very details that could make or break a company perhaps even more than the bill of materials.Margins, Scales, and Industry CloutA smartphone manufacturer, after all, isnt a charity organization. It will always be driven by profits, so it will need to make sure theres a decent margin between build costs and retail price. Of course, that profit margin isnt going to be the same for every company, and it is partly determined by how long youve been in that industry and how much supply chain companies actually trust you.As Nothings Carl Pei pointed out, you will get different component and service prices from suppliers if youre new to the market or if youre a well-established brand like Apple. When negotiating with these suppliers, you might even have to pay an additional premium of around 15% because they might not trust you yet. Conversely, if youre a reputable brand, you might be able to get away with delaying payment by a few months, not to mention getting cheaper prices. Manufacturers will also charge more for less popular designs since demand for them will be lower. As recent figures show, bigger companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung impose a bigger profit margin, but thats only when comparing it against production costs based on the bill of materials. The companies also spend more on R&D, advertising, and licensing fees, so actual margins can be quite smaller than indicated. Either way, the full price youre paying isnt just the total of the components but everything that goes into making a phone, directly or indirectly. Its a very clear case that the whole is more than a sum of its parts and definitely costs more than that.Design MattersSo the actual cost of making a phone is made up of both the visible and the invisible. Its not that hard these days to glean the bill of materials from teardowns and industry connections, but the actual costs of R&D, design, logistics, and marketing are harder to figure out. MKBHDs phone might only cost $500 if you take into account its parts, but you cant really build a phone the way you build LEGOs unless you actually build them that way.Designer: FairphoneAn important takeaway here is how much design is actually involved in making a phone and, in the vein, also how much it costs. To some extent, it also helps explain why its harder for companies to immediately adopt more modular components and repairable designs because it drives the costs up considerably as well, costs that will be pushed down to consumers. That said, the industry as a whole is thankfully moving in that direction, which hopefully means that we can someday have that ideal smartphone design that will not only let us assemble our own but also repair them more easily. The post How Much Does It Really Cost To Build a Phone: Specs, Design, and Hidden Costs first appeared on Yanko Design.
