• The Logoff: Trumps plan to send deportees to Guantnamo, explained
    www.vox.com
The Logoff is a daily newsletter that helps you stay informed about the Trump administration without letting political news take over your life. Subscribe here.Welcome to The Logoff. DonaldTrumps baseless accusations surrounding the Washington, DC, plane crash made headlines, but we promised you wed focus on what he does that matters most, so todays edition is about Trumps plan to send detainees to Guantnamo. What just happened? Trump on Wednesday ordered the expansion of an immigrant detention facility at the naval base in Guantnamo Bay, Cuba, saying it could be used to house up to 30,000 migrants. According to the Washington Post, that would make it by far the largest ICE detention facility. Administration officials said they planned to use the facility as a temporary holding facility for deported immigrants particularly violent criminals before theyre sent to other countries.Guantnamo the prison for suspected terrorists? The immigrant detention facility is separate from the Pentagon prison, though theyre both located around Guantnamo Bay in Cuba.So whats new here? The plans for a dramatic expansion of the facility are new, but migrants are already detained in Guantnamo and have been for decades. During the Clinton administration, as many as 45,000 migrants were housed there, though now the population is much smaller: Drop Site News reported the facilitys current maximum capacity at around 400.Can Trump do this? Hell need help from Congress, which would have to approve the spending to expand the facilitys capacity. Hell also likely need help from the courts, as critics are promising to sue over the plan. What are critics worried about? Migrant rights advocates say the facility is a legally murky area where current detainees have few rights. They also fear that a rapid expansion of the detainee population could cause deteriorating conditions for the people held there, opening up the possibility of violence and mistreatment.Whats the big picture? The Guantnamo plan demonstrates that the administration is looking to greatly expand its capacity to house detainees, part of a broader plan along with ICE arresting more undocumented immigrants to mobilize a mass deportation campaign. And with that, its time to log off ...FOMO (fear of missing out) is often treated like a phobia, a thing we need to overcome to live our best lives. But what if we could be using FOMO as a tool to make the most of our days? That, it turns out, was what the terms progenitor had in mind, according to this delightful Atlantic article: FOMO was a sign of abundant potential that he could learn, that he could have meaningful experiences, that each day might be different from the one before. • The deadly DC plane crash raises a major question about air travel safety
    www.vox.com
After a deadly crash between a civilian jet and a military helicopter, officials are scrambling to figure out what caused the deaths of as many as 67 people.Donald Trump, however, isnt waiting for evidence: The president on Thursday blamed former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a Democrat, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at the Federal Aviation Administration. He later conceded he has no proof of a concrete connection between DEI initiatives and the incident. Asked why he blamed Democrats and their policies, Trump replied: Because I have common sense, and unfortunately a lot of people dont.Despite Trumps attempt to immediately politicize the tragedy, the cause of the crash and what might have been done to prevent it or future tragedies remains unknown. Hopefully, further investigations will yield answers, but that will take time. But even before the crash, there were bigger questions about the safety of air travel and the governments role in protecting it both at DCA (the DC-area airport where the American Airlines flight was supposed to land) and around the country. The safety concerns around the DC airspace and FAA staffingDCA is centered in a congested airspace where both commercial and military flights operate. The airport is also home to Americas busiest runway.Last year, Congress voted to increase the number of daily flights taking off from DCA against the warnings of some lawmakers and aviation industry leaders.Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) noted last May that there had been a near-miss incident where two planes almost crashed on the runway. More and more planes on this busiest runway in the United States is just going to increase the chance of a significant incident, he said. Aside from the concerns about regulating congestion at DCA specifically, airlines have also been raising the alarm about a critical shortage of FAA air traffic controllers nationwide. That shortage dates back at least to the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, when there were large staffing cuts due to a reduction in travel, and training programs for new controllers were put on hold. Though hiring has picked up in the last year, the FAA was still dealing with a shortage of about 3,000 certified controllers as of last May, including at DCA.This is in part due to chronic underfunding, which has also prevented the agency from updating aging facilities and technological systems. In fiscal year 2024, the FAAs budget was $19.8 billion, an almost 7 percent increase over the previous year in recognition of its staffing challenges. According to the New York Times, DCA staffing was below normal levels when Wednesdays crash occurred and only one controller was available to handle tasks that typically would have been divided between two radioing pilots flying planes and those flying helicopters. However, we wont know for certain whether either of these factors contributed to the crash until investigators fully examine the planes black box and review recordings of air traffic control communications. It is not clear whether the helicopter, which was being used for annual training on night flying, was flying at the correct altitude or assigned flight path when it crashed into the plane. In short, its too soon for anyone, including the president, to know what exactly caused this crash and what we should learn from it to make our skies safer.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. • Microsoft announce Forza Horizon 5 for PS5 Switch 2 also rumoured
    metro.co.uk
It was bound to happen (Xbox Game Studios)The next Xbox game to be ported to PlayStation 5 will be racing game Forza Horizon 5, with rumours of Halo: The Master Chief Collection to follow. The inevitable has happened and Microsoft has confirmed that Forza Horizon 5 will be coming to the PlayStation 5 this spring, although theres no exact date yet.Originally released in 2021, the acclaimed arcade racing game is set in Mexico and is widely regarded as one of, if not the, best Xbox Series X/S console exclusives, with the Forza series in general being arguably the most consistently high quality first party franchise from Xbox. The PlayStation 5 version will be handled by American studio Panic Button, who primarily work on ports of existing games, including the Xbox Series X/S version of Forza Horizon 4. Original developer, British studio Playground Games, is currently working on the reboot of Fable. As of time of writing there is no mention of the news on Xbox Wire, just a single tweet and Instagram post from the official Forza Horizon channels but nothing from Xbox in general. Its not hard to imagine why Microsoft would be reticent to promote games on rival formats but if theyre going all in on multiformat releases theyre going to need to be more proactive than this.Theres nothing on the PlayStation Blog either, or their YouTube channel, but they did retweet the original annoucement. So, it seems as if the embarrassment of working with a former rival goes both ways. The Forza website does have some additional information though, confirming that the PlayStation 5 version will feature nearly 900 cars, more than 40 game updates (including all car packs), and two expansions (Hot Wheels and Rally Adventure).New content for all versions the game is also available on PC and Xbox One will also be released called Horizon Realms, which will involve a curated collection of previously released Evolving Worlds and other surprises. When will Forza Horizon 6 be announced? Each new Forza Horizon game is set in a different region or country, including Colorado, Southern France and Northern Italy, Australia, Great Britain, and Forza Horizon 5s version of Mexico. Despite the series popularity it remains unclear when a sixth entry might appear, even though it seems inevitable.Clearly thats because Playground Games is busy with Fable, but the most common rumours suggest that the next game will be based in Asia, either in China or Japan.Job listings last year suggested that, despite their focus on Fable, the game was being worked on by Playground Games, who at close to 400 staff are a very large studio, despite not being particularly prolific.Since theres no date yet, its unknown whether Forza Horizon 5 will come out before or after Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, which is also due to arrive on PlayStation 5 this spring.More TrendingAfter that, its unclear what other games Microsoft will port to PlayStation 5 but the full unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2, during a Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2, is almost certain to include a number of Xbox products.Forza Horizon 5 going multiformat had been widely rumoured before now and as soon as the official annoucement was made leaker extas1s implied it would also be coming to Nintendo Switch 2.At the same time Windows Central writer Jez Corden indicated that Halo: The Master Chief Collection would also be coming to PlayStation 5, as the next of Xboxs big three (Forza, Halo, and Gears of War) to go multiformat. Although he suggested not any time imminently.Especially given their reticence to discuss the issue in public, its impossible to guess when Microsoft will announce their next multiformat release but its certain that Forza Horizon 5 will not be the last Xbox title to arrive on PlayStation 5. • Chris Evans Still Insists Hes Not Returning to the MCU
    gizmodo.com
Last week, Benedict Cumberbatch made the bold declaration that Doctor Strange wont appear in Avengers: Doomsdayonly to walk that back and admit that yes, we will be seeing the Sorcerer Supreme in that film, rather than having to wait for Avengers: Secret Wars. His Avengers cohort Chris Evans, the former Captain America, has picked up the thread and stomped all over it by insisting his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is done, done, done. This latest statementmade in an Esquire piece (via the Hollywood Reporter) profiling the current Captain America, Anthony Mackie, who has Captain America: Brave New World coming out February 14is entering broken-record territory at this point. Responding to talk of his return, reported in the trades most recently in December 2024, Evans told the magazine Thats not true This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple yearsever since Endgame. Ive just stopped responding to it, and added that hes happily retired. And its true: Evans return to the MCU has been rumored for years (in 2023, he did say never say never about returning to play Cap, which he called as a precious role to me)and Marvel fans technically did get him back, albeit in a jokey take on his Fantastic Four character Johnny Storm, thanks to a surprise cameo in last summers Deadpool & Wolverine. Mackie told Esquire he was just as startled by that December report as everyone else, claiming I didnt know! I was like, You know, they said theyre bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?' Apparently, Mackie does a dead-on Evans impression, and said Evans told him exactly what hed told Esquire: Im happily retired. The truth is, Avengers: Doomsday is likely to remain a big ball of mystery until were much closer to its May 2026 release. What little we know about it so far does include some MCU returns in directors the Russo Brothers, and former Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Doctor Doom. But you can guarantee all the big, juicy Marvel secretslike, say, Chris Im Retired Evans dusting off his Cap costume, or perhaps portraying another character entirely (probably not Johnny Storm, though)will stay tightly under wraps until audiences are seated in theaters. Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

  • Future U.S. Ban on Seafood Imports Aims to Protect Marine Mammals
    www.discovermagazine.com
Fish caught by methods that can also entangle whales, dolphins, and seals will be banned from U.S. import, starting Jan. 1, 2026, according to a recent agreement.Conservation groups earlier this month made a deal with the U.S. government to stop importing seafood that doesnt meet marine mammal protection standards. U.S. fishers must also follow similar standards in domestic waters. The agreement is intended to minimize bycatch the accidental entanglement of mammals fishers werent intending to haul aboard. While many fishers have changed their techniques to avoid catching mammals, there is still work to do.Unintentional CatchesAn estimated 650,000 whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals are unintentionally caught every year. Many of those animals are tossed overboard, and either drown, or die from injuries.Entanglement is a huge threat to these animals survival, Sarah Uhlemann, international program director at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a news release. The United States has the power to use its enormous seafood market to help the worlds oceans, and its about time we started. The U.S. imports about $25.5 billion worth of seafood products every year. Those imports come from more than 130 nations and include shrimp, tuna, and other finfish. Around 80 percent of seafood eaten in the U.S. is imported. Time for Enforcement?Although the 1972 U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibited the U.S. from allowing seafood to enter the country unless exporting nations meet the same standards applied to U.S. fishers, in practice the provision was rarely enforced. In 2016, the government began the process to establish which fisheries to ban, but has delayed putting that policy into place. The deal should ensure some relief for threatened marine mammals suffering from bycatch, level the playing field for fishermen working hard to protect marine mammals, and give consumers more confidence that the seafood they consume does not needlessly kill the whales and dolphins they love, Zak Smith, an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), said in a news release.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Earliest Evidence of Lead Pollution Found From 5,200 Years Ago
    www.discovermagazine.com
Theres a lot in our lives today that traces back to ancient Greece and the other cultures of the Aegean: our politics and philosophy, our art and architecture, and, apparently, our lead pollution. Thats according to a study of sediment cores from in and around the Aegean Sea, which found the earliest-known evidence of human-caused contamination from lead, and tied it to the areas inhabitants around 5,200 years ago. Published in Communications Earth & Environment, the study also identified an increase in lead contamination around 2,150 years ago. This coincided with a significant socioeconomic shift in the Aegean, as the ancient Greeks came under the control of the Romans and increased their output of silver as a result.Because lead was released during the production of silver, [] proof of increasing lead concentrations in the environment is [] an important indicator of socioeconomic change, said Andreas Koutsodendris, a study author and a researcher at the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University, according to a press release. Increased Production, Increased PollutionThe Aegean fostered some of Europes earliest civilizations, fueling cultures like the Minoans, the Myceneans, and the ancient Greeks. Setting out to study how these cultures treated their Aegean environments in turn, a team of researchers sampled a series of sediment cores from the seas coasts and seafloor.Analyzing 14 separate sediment cores (several taken from aboard the METEOR and AEGAEO research vessels), the team found that humans had caused lead contamination a lot earlier than previously thought approximately 1,200 years earlier, around 5,200 years ago. Their analysis also revealed that human-caused concentrations of lead surged in the Aegean around 2,150 years ago.The changes coincide with the conquest of Hellenistic Greece by the Romans, who subsequently claimed for themselves the regions wealth of resources, said Joseph Maran, a study author and an archaeologist at Heidelberg University, in the release.Indeed, the Greeks increased their production of silver, and thus their pollution of their environment, after they fell to the Romans in 146 B.C.E., a change that likely caused the increased traces of lead in the sediments of the Aegean coast and seafloor.Lead, Pollen, and Land The team says that the earlier traces of human-caused contamination were found in coastal sediments. In fact, the earliest evidence came from a core from a peat bog. But the later traces were found in seafloor sediments, too, with the surge some 2,150 years ago representing the earliest evidence of human-caused contamination in the ocean.Preserving traces of pollen alongside traces of lead, the cores even allowed researchers to track Aegean land management over time, including the removal of forests and the clearing of agricultural fields that occurred in the area after Roman conquest.Ultimately, their results reveal how the world of the Aegean was transformed socially, economically, and environmentally from 5,200 years ago to 2,150 years ago. The combined data on lead contamination and vegetation development show when the transition from agricultural to monetary societies took place and how that impacted the environment, said Jrg Pross, a study author and a professor at the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University, in the release.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
