• Disney Says Its "Fantastic Four" Posters Aren't AI, They Actually Just Look Like Absolute Garbage
    futurism.com
Were the new posters for the upcoming Disney comic book movie "Fantastic Four: First Steps" AI-generated? Apparently not, Marvel says: they actually just look that bad.As , Disney-owned Marvel Studios has denied that the widely scrutinized marketing materials were in any way created with AI technology, following a flurry of accusations on social media. It's not hard to see why fans were worried. The four posters and this one in particular do have that uncanny sheen that's come to be associated with AI.They're also pocked with strange details, like hands that appear to only have four fingers a telltale sign of AI-generation and duplicated faces. But if Marvel and Disney are to be believed, these are just the products of someone doing a shoddy Photoshop job not of an experimental technology evaporating a lake somewhere.Marvel and Disney has a history of using AI. For the superhero franchise's TV miniseries "Secret Wars," AI was used to generate images shown in the opening credits sequence, with wonky results. And prior to his passing, Disney obtained approval from Darth Vader voice actor James Earl Jones to clone his voice for future "Star Wars" projects using AI.With other high profile films being embroiled in AI scandals of late, including "The Brutalist" and "Alien: Romulus," fears about how the technology is making inroads into the film industry are running high. This latest episode might be evidence that the hysteric climate has reached a fever pitch. Of course, all the concerns and criticism surrounding AI in the arts are warranted: it flaunts copyright law by cribbing original work, it destroys human jobs, and is arguably antithetical to art itself. But maybe we're forgetting that bad art isn't the exclusive purview of AI models. Aren't comic book movie posters these days if not the products they're advertising usually pretty hideous? That said, it says a lot that audiences no longer trust these big moviemaking institutions to not capitulate to AI because that's exactly what many of them are doing. And, we have to say, some of the poster details are pretty suspicious. Even if Marvel says it's all human-made, it's not outside the realm of possibility that a few AI assets got used at some point in the process without a higher-up knowing. Remember the AI-faked critics quote fiasco with the "Megalopolis" trailer? So sure, this could all just be the result of shoddy workmanship. Disney, after all, has been criticized for the abusive conditions it forces visual artists to work in. It does not like paying artists.Anyway, this is where we're at now being driven insane by AI, unable to distinguish the real from the unreal, and vice versa.Share This Article

  • Fake Google Chrome Sites Distribute ValleyRAT Malware via DLL Hijacking
    thehackernews.com
Feb 06, 2025Ravie LakshmananCyber Attack / MalwareBogus websites advertising Google Chrome have been used to distribute malicious installers for a remote access trojan called ValleyRAT.The malware, first detected in 2023, is attributed to a threat actor tracked as Silver Fox, with prior attack campaigns primarily targeting Chinese-speaking regions like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China."This actor has increasingly targeted key roles within organizationsparticularly in finance, accounting, and sales department highlighting a strategic focus on high-value positions with access to sensitive data and systems," Morphisec researcher Shmuel Uzan said in a report published earlier this week.Early attack chains have been observed delivering ValleyRAT alongside other malware families such as Purple Fox and Gh0st RAT, the latter of which has been extensively used by various Chinese hacking groups. As recently as last month, counterfeit installers for legitimate software have served as a distribution mechanism for the trojan by means of a DLL loader named PNGPlug. It's worth noting that a drive-by download scheme targeting Chinese-speaking Windows users was previously used to deploy Gh0st RAT using malicious installer packages for the Chrome web browser. In a similar fashion, the latest attack sequence associated with ValleyRAT entails the use of a fake Google Chrome website to trick targets into downloading a ZIP archive containing an executable ("Setup.exe").The binary, upon execution, checks if it has administrator privileges and then proceeds to download four additional payloads, including a legitimate executable associated with Douyin ("Douyin.exe"), the Chinese version of TikTok, that's used to sideload a rogue DLL ("tier0.dll"), which then launches the ValleyRAT malware. Also retrieved is another DLL file ("sscronet.dll"), which is responsible for terminating any running process present in an exclusion list.Compiled in Chinese and written in C++, ValleyRAT is a trojan that's designed to monitor screen content, log keystrokes, and establish persistence on the host. It's also capable of initiating communications with a remote server to await further instructions that allow it to enumerate processes, as well as download and execute arbitrary DLLs and binaries, among others."For payload injection, the attacker abused legitimate signed executables that were vulnerable to DLL search order hijacking," Uzan said. The development comes as Sophos shared details of phishing attacks that employ Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) attachments to evade detection and deliver an AutoIt-based keystroke logger malware like Nymeria or direct users to credential harvesting pages.Found this article interesting? • Ransomware Extortion Drops to $813.5M in 2024, Down from $1.25B in 2023
    thehackernews.com
Feb 06, 2025Ravie LakshmananCybercrime / RansomwareRansomware attacks netted cybercrime groups a total of $813.5 million in 2024, a decline from $1.25 billion in 2023.The total amount extorted during the first half of 2024 stood at $459.8 million, blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis said, adding payment activity slumped after July 2024 by about 3.94%."The number of ransomware events increased into H2, but on-chain payments declined, suggesting that more victims were targeted, but fewer paid," the company said.Adding to the challenges is an increasingly fragmented ransomware ecosystem, which, in the wake of the collapse of LockBit and BlackCat, has led to the emergence of a lot of newcomers that have eschewed big game hunting in favor of small- to mid-size entities that, in turn, translate to more modest ransom demands.According to data compiled by Coveware, the average ransomware payment in Q4 2024 was at $553,959, up from $479,237 in Q3. The median ransomware payment, in contrast, dropped from $200,000 to $110,890 quarter-over-quarter, a 45% drop."Payments continue to remain primarily a last-resort option for those who have no alternative to recover critical data," the company said."Faulty decryption tools from both new and old ransomware strains and mounting distrust of threat actors' ability to honor assurances compound to drive victims away from the table unless they have no other option."The decline in ransom payments have also been complemented by growing law enforcement success in dismantling cybercriminal networks and crypto laundering services, thereby disrupting the financial incentive and raising the barriers to entry. That said, 2024 also witnessed the highest volume of annual ransomware cases since 2021, reaching a staggering 5,263 attacks, an increase of 15% year-over-year."With a crucial role in the global economy, Industrials experienced 27% (1424) of all ransomware attacks in 2024, increasing 15% from 2023," NCC Group said. "North America experienced over half of all attacks in 2024 (55%)."The most commonly observed ransomware variants during 2024 were Akira (11%), Fog (11%), RansomHub (8%), Medusa (5%), BlackSuit (5%), BianLian (4%), and Black Basta (4%). Lone wolf actors captured an 8% market share during the time period. Some of the new entrants observed in recent months include Arcus Media, Cloak, HellCat, Nnice, NotLockBit, WantToCry, and Windows Locker. HellCat, in particular, has been found resorting to psychological tactics to humiliate victims and pressure them into paying up."Both Akira and Fog have used identical money laundering methods, which are distinct from other ransomware strains, further supporting a connection between them," Chainalysis said."Both groups have primarily focused on exploiting VPN vulnerabilities, which allows them to gain unauthorized access to networks and consequently deploy their ransomware."Found this article interesting? Harrison Ford isn't disappointed by the box office failure of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The 82-year-old actor reprised his role as the titular protagonist for the final time in the 2023 movie but brushed off the pictures commercial failure as he fulfilled his ambition to bring the character back for one last adventure.Speaking to the Wall Street Journal magazine, Ford said: S happens.I was really the one who felt there was another story to tell. When (Indy) has suffered the consequences of the life that he had to live, I wanted one more chance to pick him up and shake the dust off his ass and stick him out there, bereft of some of his vigor, to see what happened. Im still happy I made that movie.Fordnow takes centre stage in the new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Captain America: Brave New World, in which he plays U.S. president Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross, and explained that he accepted the part without reading a script as he had seen other actors enjoying themselves on Marvel flicks. The Star Wars actor said: Why not? I saw enough Marvels to see actors that I admired having a good time.Ford joked: I didn't really know that at the end I would turn into the Red Hulk ... well, it's like life. Now were in peoples houses more than were in the commons. We work for niche audiences. Which doesnt lessen the work. But were living in a different world, without the comfort of knowing that were all in this together.Fordhas taken over from the late William Hurt in the role of Ross and he felt the need to fill out the shoes of the actor who passed away in 2022 aged 71.Speaking with On Demand Entertainment, Ford said: It becomes your responsibility to fill out the shoes that have walked before you. And I have a lot of help from the script because the characters life becomes more complicated and interesting, perhaps. But the level of dramatic involvement there is very high. Its very operatic.Captain America: Brave New Worldis set to open in theaters on February 14.The Greatest Indiana Jones Movie That Was Never MadeA few years before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released, Frank Darabont wrote a very similar (but vastly superior) script called Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods. • 5th studio picked for Waterloo wayfinding job
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
Grimshaw's March 2024 masterplan for redeveloping London's Waterloo StationA team led by 5th Studio has won a commission to upgrade wayfinding and public realm around Waterloo station in central London 5th Studio working with consultation and co-design specialists, New Practice plus Alan Tyler Consulting and Bloqs Create has been selected as overall winner of the contract by Lambeth Council following an open tender that received 22 submissions. The winning multi-disciplinary team will now create a innovative and highly creative wayfinding strategy outlining featuring a series of design intervention proposals supported by an overarching design framework and a design toolkit. The commission is the first to emerge following the announcement of Grimshaws competition-winning masterplan for redeveloping Londons Waterloo Station and its surroundings one year ago. Key aims include building on the cultural significance of the Waterloo and South Bank area through innovative engagement and co-design.AdvertisementDanny Adilypour Lambeth Councils deputy leader and cabinet member for Housing, Investment and New Homes said: I am delighted we were able to commission 5th Studio to take on this important work that will lead to more people than ever before being able to enjoy their neighbourhoods around Waterloo and the South Bank.It builds on the ambitious Waterloo station masterplan and will help us realise our vision of creating neighbourhoods fit for the future. The latest project will develop a Strategy and Delivery Plan, identifying innovative, deliverable and intuitive wayfinding with the aim of improving the experience of thousands of residents, visitors and workers moving through Waterloo station and the South Bank area every day. With a particular focus on onward connections and journeys to and from Waterloo station, the strategy will identify the potential and opportunity to enhance key existing routes, improving connectivity and permeability across the area, drawing on and celebrating the areas cultural significance, character and identity.Waterloo serves suburban south-west London and south-west England, and combines 24 train platforms, four underground lines and several bus routes, making it one of the largest stations in the UK and Europe.AdvertisementIt includes the Grimshaw-designed former Waterloo International Terminal, which opened in 1993 and was named the RIBA Presidents Building of the Year and won the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture. The main station buildings were constructed from 1907 to 1922 and designed by London and South Western Railway chief architects JW Jacomb-Hood and AW Szlumper. The complex includes an elaborate street and concourse frontage designed by James Robb Scott.A bid to list parts of the interchange, including Waterloo International, was turned down by former heritage minister John Penrose in 2010 but the Scott-designed Victory Arch entrance featuring sculpture by Charles Whiffen was Grade II-listed in 2002. Robinson Kenning and Gallagher Architects created a new first-floor balcony serving retail spaces in the station a decade ago.In March 2024, Grimshaw revealed a series of long-term aspirations for the station as part of a new masterplan including a redesigned northern concourse, a new southern concourse and more than 40 new walking and cycling routes connecting the station to other parts of the capital. The plans, drawn up for clients Network Rail and Lambeth Council, also include new public spaces, workspace and an enhanced bus and taxi interchange.Grimshaw, which famously worked on the Waterloo International Terminal (1993), landed the contract in September 2022 and has since been working on the plan with Gbolade Design Studio, WSP, Exterior Architecture, Hatch, Savills, Turner & Townsend and Iceni.Key aims of the latest commission include boosting connectivity and permeability between the station and key surrounding landmarks, creating new green public realm in the area, and unlocking inclusive growth opportunities for the surrounding area. The latest appointment comes half a year after Arup, Grimshaw and 5th Studio were picked to work on the next stage of redeveloping east Londons Stratford Station and surrounding areas.2025-02-06Merlin Fulchercomment and share
