• Mixed reality headband concept offers a simple solution to a common usability problem
    www.yankodesign.com
If you believe in the spiels of companies like Apple, Meta, and Google, youd probably think that extended or mixed reality is the future of computing. After all, its quite exciting to think of the way the physical world and the digital world will blend seamlessly in that future, but todays technologies still leave plenty to be desired. As powerful as the likes of the Vision Pro and Quest 3 are, they havent solved many of the problems that literally isolate us from our own world. These headsets can let us see the real world beyond the screens, but only through tinted glasses that also affect the quality of the digital objects overlaid on top. People outside can also barely see your own eyes, removing one important aspect of personal human communication. There are many technologies being developed to address these, but sometimes, the simplest solution can be the best. And no, you dont have to take off the headset completely.Designer: Junseo OhAs fantastic as extended reality and spatial computing might sound, the reality is that we wont spend all day in them. There will be moments when we want or even need to see the real world beyond those lenses, even for a brief moment, but removing headsets and putting them back on again is just too much of a hassle. Youre more likely not to wear them again for a while, which in itself could be a loss in productivity. The frame concept design offers a simple solution thats already in use in some eyewear. Instead of a fixed headset shape, its more like a visor where the front part that holds the lenses and optics can easily be lifted up, giving you an obstructed view of the world around you. And when youre ready to dive back into augmented reality, simply flip the visor back down and carry on.The flip design also has the benefit of giving you back your peripheral vision, a necessity when youre moving around in the real world. It offers the best of all worlds, though it admittedly will make you look odd like a mad scientist with the visor up. That said, its a small price to pay for the ability to see the world clearly without having to take the headgear off.Despite that unusual design, the frame concept still promises the usual staples of XR headsets, such as hand gesture detection and camera passthrough. It might even offer more, such as physical controls that gently remind you with tactile that youre still in the physical world. Removable pads also let you fit the band around your head better, though the open-back design might not inspire much confidence in terms of stability, especially considering it has a front-heavy construction. The post Mixed reality headband concept offers a simple solution to a common usability problem first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • How to transfer passwords from Google to Apple
    www.macworld.com
MacworldApples upgraded Passwords app in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 may be motivation for you to consolidate passwords youre managing elsewhere. If you ever use Chrome or have a Google account, its very likely you have password management set up alongside your Google Account. Fortunately, its easy to migrate them into Apples system.A Mac is required, as Passwords for iOS and iPadOS doesnt offer an import option. Heres how to proceed:Open ChromeGo tohttps://passwords.google.com.Click the Gear icon at top to the right of the label Password Manager.Click the Export button to the right of Export Passwords.Confirm your choice by clicking Export. This will create a file thats downloaded with the plain text of all your passwords. (Passkeys cant be exported, but if youre using Apple devices, theyre already managed by the operating system and synced with iCloud.)When prompted to confirm your identity, do so. I was prompted for both a passkey and my account password. The file is now downloaded to your default downloads folder in Chrome. Find it, then launch Passwords. In Passwords, chooseFile > Import Passwords from File.Click Choose File.Select the passwords file via the open dialog and click Import.Authenticate by using a fingerprint or other method. The import completes with a summary dialog. Make sure you dont miss itits not modal and may hide behind the main Passwords window, as it did for me. Passwords tells you if there are any duplicates on import, which it skips. You can use this as a guide to delete or update outdated entries in Passwords. (Apple doesnt create an imported group or provide any way to determine when the passwords entries were added.)iCloud Passwords lets you know if there are duplicates when you import passwords. If you choose to update Passwords by removing duplicate entries there, you can just import the same text file again: Passwords will now skip all the entries it successfully imported and only import the ones that replace the items you just deleted.Make sure and delete the downloaded file when youre done and empty the trash. You dont want to keep passwords in plain text on your computer.ApplesiCloud Passwords extension for Google Chromelets you fill in passwords from your iCloud-based storehouse so you dont lose access to those entries when using Chrome in the future. An option in iCloud Passwords lets you disable password autofill by Chrome so you dont wind up with conflicting entries.Enable Turn Off Chrome AutoFill to avoid double prompts to passwords: one from iCloud Passwords and the other from Chrome. This Mac 911 article is in response to a question submitted by Macworld reader Stewart.Ask Mac 911Weve compiled a list of the questions we get asked most frequently, along with answers and links to columns:read our super FAQto see if your question is covered. • What do dying people regret the most? Living an inauthentic life.
    blog.medium.com
In one of the most popular Medium stories ever (featured in issue #105), Methodist pastor Lydia Sohn interviews her eldest congregants about their joys, hopes, fears, and regrets. Sohn was in her thirties at the time, and like many thirtysomethings she cared immensely about her career. Thinking of her future, Sohn envisioned a list of accomplishments but her conversations with nonagenarians challenged that. The 90-somethings she spoke with barely mentioned their jobs.Their joys and regrets have nothing to do with their careers, she writes, but with their parents, children, spouses, and friends. At the end of their lives, they thought back on their relationships, not their resumes.I thought back to that while reading Robert Roy Britts advice from the dying to the living, published this week. Britt interviews Megan Shen, PhD, a social psychologist who works with terminally ill cancer patients. Shen adds nuance to the most commonly reported regret: working too much. Its never the work itself people blame instead, they regret why they worked so much. People who spent huge chunks of their lives working toward a vague vision of societally defined success, i.e. titles and money, regret that. But those who poured themselves into deeply meaningful projects dont.Building on that, Britt cites palliative caregiver Bronnie Wares book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. Ware lists them, as follows:Not having courage to live a life true to themselvesWorking too hard (see above!)Not having the courage to express their feelingsLosing touch with friendsNot simply letting themselves be happierMost of these boil down to one overarching regret: not doing and saying what really matters to you. Living out of obligation instead of purpose. The dying people I cared for, Ware writes, helped me understand how irrelevant the opinions of others are in the end, and my courage has set me free of such cares before my deathbed days arrive. From the archive: Icelandic elvesSpeaking of doing what you want, eight years ago Rob Mentzer flew to Iceland alone. Hed been depressed, so his wife suggested he do something hed always dreamed of (take a solo trip to Icelands Westfjords). She bought him a plane ticket and off he went. Mentzer writes: I am fortunate to have the type of demons that can be exorcised by a solo trip, a long hike, a swim in a weird pool. While there, Mentzer stumbles upon a plaque commemorating a 17th-century Icelandic farmer/magician who apparently made a pact with the devil to redirect fjord-water to his farmland (!). He digs deeper and learns that the farmer is one of the first Icelanders to popularize the idea that the country is alive with mythical elves and though Mentzer is ostensibly alone in Iceland, these elves keep him company while hes there. This essay is many things, but among them its an example of how to develop a deeper relationship with your physical environment, wherever you are in the world. Plus, it features some great photos:Image credit: Rob Mentzer Your daily dose of practical wisdomOne key to avoiding burnout: Reframe rest as a core part of your daily systems, not a reward for hard work. • How Guy Fawkes, Figurehead of the Gunpowder Plot, Avoided the Full Horrors of Execution by Hanging, Drawing and Quartering
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Guy Fawkes was sentenced to death for his role in the Gunpowder Plot, a conspiracy to kill James I of England, members of the royal family and government officials. Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsAs Guy Fawkes walked to the gallows on January 31, 1606, doomed to execution for his part in an unsuccessful attempt to blow up Londons Houses of Parliament, no one knew just what was going through his mind.A co-conspirator in the infamous Gunpowder Plot, Fawkes was born in 1570 in York, England. Raised as a Protestant, he converted to Catholicism in his teens. When Fawkes was just 21, he left for mainland Europe to fight for the Spanish in the Eighty Years War, a conflict that began before his birth, when Catholic Spain reacted to the Protestant Reformation making its way through the Netherlands. While in Spain, Fawkes met Thomas Wintour and Robert Catesby, the leaders of a small group of men who detested Englands new king, James I, for his discrimination toward Catholics. Together, the men planned on blowing up Britains Houses of Parliament, killing the king, his wife and his eldest son. The conspirators then planned to kidnap and crown James young daughter, 9-year-old Elizabeth, providing English Catholics an opportunity to reclaim their country. Wintour recruited Fawkes to join them. The assassination was set to take place during the formal State Opening of Englands Parliament on November 5, 1605, an event laden with political significance that would be attended by most of the nations influential leaders. Since Fawkes was familiar with gunpowder from his time in the military, it fell to him to light the explosives beneath the Palace of Westminster, where Parliament convenes. An engraving of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators, with Fawkes depicted third from right Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsLuckily for James and others targeted by the plot, an anonymous letter exposing the conspiracy made its way to a member of Parliament, Lord Monteagle. My lord, out of the love I have for some of your friends, I want to make sure you are safe, the missive read. Because of this, I would advise you to not attend this sitting of Parliament, because God and man have agreed to punish the wickedness of this time. Instead of keeping the warning to himself, Monteagle shared it with the authorities, precipitating an immediate response. Fawkes was arrested in the cellars beneath the palace in the morning hours of November 5. He had 36 barrels of gunpowder beside him. When asked what he was doing, Fawkes admitted to wanting to blow up the king, venting his regret at having failed. His captors imprisoned him at the Tower of London, where he was interrogated and tortured. Though some of his co-conspirators had fled to Englands Midlands, they were chased down and killed. The othersincluding Wintour, Ambrose Rookwood and Robert Keyeswere caught and interned alongside Fawkes at the Tower. All of the surviving men were later convicted of high treason. The court sentenced the plotters to hanging, drawing and quartering, a brutal process that involved hanging the men until they were half-dead, cutting them down and disemboweling them, and finally beheading them and dividing their remains into quarters. As Attorney General Edward Coke said during the mens trials, the accused would be put to death halfway between heaven and earth as unworthy of both. The Real Story of Guido Fawkes | The Gunpowder Plot of 1605Watch on The executions were scheduled for the last two days of January 1606. But Fawkes, who was the final conspirator to make his way to the noose, escaped the full horrors of his sentence. According to a contemporary chronicler, His body being weak with the torture and sickness, he was scarce able to go up the ladder, yet with much ado, by the help of the hangman, went high enough to break his neck by the fall. In other words, by either jumping or falling to the ground from the gallows, Fawkes ensured he was dead before being cut down and disemboweled.Though Fawkes is synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, he was by no means the principal conspirator. Still, his legacy lives on. In Britain, November 5 is known as Guy Fawkes Night, a commemoration of the failed plot that involves plenty of bonfires and fireworks, as well as effigies of Fawkes himself that are typically tossed into the fire. Theres also the Guy Fawkes mask, a stylized depiction of Fawkes that illustrator David Lloyd created for the 1980s graphic novel V for Vendetta. In the years since, the mask has been adopted as a symbol of anarchy and protest worldwide. The religious strife that sparked the Gunpowder Plot has long since been resolved in England. But its legacy endures alongside Fawkes rebellious reputation: Each year before the Houses of Parliaments official State Opening, the royal bodyguards perform a ceremonial search of its cellars in recognition of the failed Gunpowder Plot.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: British History, Christianity, Death, England, European History, London, On This Day in History

  • David Chipperfields first UK building in listing bid
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
Featuring top-lit, loft-like studio spaces and inspired by Japanese architecture, 1 Cobham Mews in north London was the practices debut new-build project in the UK and could become Chipperfields first project to be nationally listed. The 71-year-old architect, who was knighted in 2010 and who was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2023, has thrown his weight behind the listing bid, describing the studio on the one-time scrapyard site off Agar Grove as an important early project for our practice.Split into three distinct elements, the office was David Chipperfield Architects first home and was occupied by the practice for more than 20 years before it relocated to Waterloo in 2011.AdvertisementIt then became the studio of landscape architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman. It is understood BGP Studio, a sister company of Gustafson Porter + Bowman, is behind the current planning application to convert the building into four homes. The design and access statement submitted last year to Camden Council states: Given the residential character of the area in which the building is placed and the need to bring the building up to current standards of insulation and carbon-free heating, it has been decided to apply for a change of use from Category E office use to Category C3 dwelling house use, for which the buildings form and character is eminently suited and requires very little change in its external appearance. The Twentieth Century Society has said that, although it supports the conversion in principle, a listing assessment that results in a designation would ensure any changes were sympathetic to the heritage of the building. The application has already prompted a number of objections from neighbours, who have raised concerns about the impact of the conversion on the buildings architectural integrity, their privacy and potential issues with overlooking.Looking back at the history of the building, Chipperfield said: We found the opportunity [at Cobham Mews] and introduced it to the developer, Derwent Valley, who then commissioned us to design the building. During the process we agreed to rent one half of the building as our studio.AdvertisementThe architect said the site was completely landlocked by the gardens of neighbouring buildings and, as a result, the design and realisation of the building was totally determined by this condition, having to protect the roots of trees in the neighbours gardens.Chipperfield added: The lack of aspect meant that the building had to receive most of its daylight from rooflights or via small courtyards. The inspirations for the building were the typical Victorian artists studios in London and the normal small-scale industrial buildings of the area. The building provided us with a very comfortable working space for many years.Twentieth Century Society director Catherine Croft believes the small-scale, tucked-away gem is a valuable marker of the qualities and approach for whichChipperfield has become famous for in his better-known projects. She said: Before the Neues Museum and the Hepworth Wakefield, before the Pritzker Prize, there was 1 Cobham Mews. In this modest, modernist backlands project, we can see early evidence of the rigour and meticulous attention to detail that would later become hallmarks of David Chipperfields work. She added: Historic Englands listing guidance for residential buildings recommends particular credit where architects are designing for themselves.Wed contend that this also applies to architects places of work, where the intimacy of the working environment and the values of the practice are manifest.Gustafson Porter + Bowman has been contacted for comment.1 Cobham Mews by David Chipperfield Architects1 Cobham Mews Twentieth Century Society citationBuilt on an awkward triangular plot, bounded by the back gardens of surrounding properties on all three sides, the building has only one visible elevation. The geometry of the site and a planning condition that stipulated avoidance of overlooking neighbours, led to a design that favoured top-lit, loft-like studio spaces. Chipperfield has stated that the controlled views of the building drew inspiration from Victorian artists studios and the traditions of Japanese architecture. The main studio spaces are externally represented by two double-height glass block screens, redolent of the Maison du Verre in Paris (Pierre Chareau and Bernard Bijvoet, 1928-32). These symmetrical screens are separated by a spine wall of exposed in-situ concrete, with two substantial oak doors located at either side. Each door opens onto a stair, which runs up along the spine wall to studio space on the mezzanine level. The stairs have exposed concrete treads and each has a slender metal handrail, with a profile that references that at Le Corbusiers Maisons Jaoul (Paris, 1954-56). Overall the interiors are composed of simple, carefully detailed, high-quality materials; an early example of what would later become known as a hallmark of Chipperfields work. The client was Derwent Valley Properties. Derwents David Rosen and Simon Silver worked on the project.David Chipperfield was the partner in charge and Michael Cullinan the project architect, with assistance from Jorge Carvalho, Evan Webber, Robert Maxwell and John Southall. Price & Myers was the structural engineer. We understand that the building survives in excellent condition, externally and internally. Its original layout, finishes and fixtures remain in-situ.
