• Monster Hunter Wilds Uses Ideas Inspired by Worlds Final Fantasy 14, The Witcher 3 Collabs
    gamingbolt.com
Monster Hunter Wilds will feature attack names displayed in the HUD for players to figure out what kinds of moves theyre doing. According to IGN, Capcom got the idea to have this as a HUD element during the Monster Hunter World collaboration event with Final Fantasy 14.While working on the event, which brought Final Fantasys Behemoth to Monster Hunter as an MMO raid-styled fight, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida told Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda that displaying attack names would be a good idea because players like to see the names of their attacks as theyre doing it.The Behemoth fight in Monster Hunter World, for context, allowed players to keep an eye on what attacks the monster would be using. This is because the fight itself involved players making use of various mechanics, such as needing to take cover behind comets when the meteor attack is used. The beta test for Monster Hunter Wilds also showcased this feature, allowing players to get a look at the names of their attacks as they were in the middle of a combo. This feature will likely help players get better at their chosen weapons, allowing them to understand which moves can then be comboed into other attacks.Capcom also took some ideas from its work with CD Projekt RED on the Witcher 3 collaboration in Monster Hunter World. Tokuda describes the Witcher 3 quest as a test run for Capcom to experiment with offering dialogue choices in Monster Hunter World. For context, the Witcher 3 quest had players take on the role of Geralt. While the core gameplay was still that of Monster Hunter World, players got to make use of dialogue choices, and even some of Geralts magical abilities, as they take on a Leshen.Monster Hunter Wilds will similarly feature dialogue choices throughout its story, which will allow players to learn more about the games story and its characters. This is in contrast to previous mainline Monster Hunter titles, where the protagonists have been silent, at most offering a grunt or two in the heat of battle. In the mean time, you can also check out the games developers talking about how monster rosters are decided for games in the franchise, why monsters will have higher health and flinch thresholds, and how the game will need players to approach hunts from a nature-focused perspective.Capcom has also stated that it is looking into getting Monster Hunter Wilds running on lower-specced PCs. The title currently has fairly high hardware requirements, and the studio wants to work on further optimisation in the mean time.Capcom is gearing up for the February 28 release of Monster Hunter Wilds on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The company has announced a presentation for February 4, where it will showcase a host of its upcoming titles, followed by a 15-minute-long showcase of Monster Hunter Wilds.Other titles Capcom will be showcasing during the presentation include Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Street Fighter 6, Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, and Capcom Fighting Collection 2.

Friday, January 31st, 2025Posted by Jim ThackerHow Vine FX created a parasitic underwater forest for The Rightml PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"Vine FX has released its VFX breakdown for Season 2 of Amazon Prime Videos thriller The Rig.The show follows the crew of a North Sea oil rig threatened by The Ancestor, a mysterious ancient microbial life form that has been unleashed from the ocean floor.Creating a fungal underwater forest using procedural growth simulationFor the finale of Season 2, UK visual effects studio Vine FX delivered 115 shots, creating a glowing underwater forest of mycelium, its canopy extending 400 meters above the seabed.Beginning with concept art created by Scott McInnes, Vine FX used simulation techniques to grow the vast structures in an organic way.To create the forest, the studio created several tree designs that could be instanced throughout the scene, explains Vine FX Head of 3D Pedrom Dadgostar. The great thing about procedural growth simulations is that they look different from any angle, so by rotating and placing assets we were able to build a dense forest with no repetitions. The trunks were illuminated internally using mesh lights in Solaris, Houdinis look dev and shot layout environment, which gave them an otherworldly presence.Defining scale with lighting and floating particulatesAs well as the parasitic forest, Vine FX created entire ocean world, augmenting live-action shots with CG and 2D assets to give a sense of being underwater.Light plays a critical role in defining scale, says Dadgostar. We carefully placed floating particulates that helped establish that sense [of scale, falling off] into darkness around the trees. The idea was to envelop the characters in an expansive, claustrophobic world.Vine FXs compositing artists also ensured that the bioluminescent trees integrated seamlessly with the live-action footage, with the light given off reflecting from the characters diving suits.Produced using a new USD studio pipelineFor the show, Vine FX built an entirely new USD pipeline, taking advantage of the flexibility and efficiency of Universal Scene Description in handling multi-shot workflows. The new pipeline enabled Vine FX to create a unified environment that could be reused across shots without extensive re-rendering.Visit Vine FXs websiteHave your say on this story by following CG Channel on Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). • Indigo development conference to continue independently of Dutch Game Garden
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Chris Kerr, News EditorJanuary 31, 20251 Min ReadImage via IndigoNetherlands' leading game business event, Indigo, will return in 2025 in an independent capacity. The conference had previously been organized in collaboration with incubator Dutch Game Garden (DGG), which last year announced it would be ceasing activities in 2025.Although DGG is winding down, Indigo organizers have confirmed the conference will return this year as a two-day event in Rotterdam. The show will take place on May 27 and May 28 at the World Trade Center. To ensure its survival, Indigo is being transferred into a new non-profit foundation called Benelux Games Promotional Initiative (BGPI), which aims to promote game development companies and individuals in the region. The new-look event will be supported by the Dutch Games Association (DGA), the municipality of Rotterdam, and the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF)."We are very grateful for the collaboration of the DGA, the municipality of Rotterdam, and VAF. It helps us get started, but now its up to the game industry to truly support Indigo. The continuation of Indigo must be carried by the companies in our sector," said BGPI chair Geoff van den Ouden in a press release."Established studios contribute to growing the market, while new talent gets the opportunity to launch something from the Benelux. If everyone invests according to their means, the future of both the game industry and Indigo is very promising."Indigo organizers believe hosting an international B2B event in the Netherlands will allow Dutch developers and creatives to establish themselves on the world stage.About the AuthorChris KerrNews Editor, GameDeveloper.comGame Developer news editor Chris Kerr is an award-winning journalist and reporter with over a decade of experience in the game industry. • Midnight Society, the studio co-founded by streamer who admitted to messaging a minor, has shut down
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Midnight Society, the studio co-founded by Call of Duty veteran Robert Bowling and disgraced streamer Dr Disrespect, is shutting down. The company broke the news on X and indicated its 55-person development team will be disbanded."Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers contributing to our new IP Deadrop," said the company."We are actively seeking other game studios that would be interested in offering employment opportunities to our talented team members."Deadrop was pitched as a free-to-play extraction shooter with support for NFTs. The studio pledged to develop the title in tandem with its community by releasing "snapshot" builds every three months for players to appraise."The closest anyone has come to a Snapshot before was beta or early access. In truth, Snapshots are different," wrote the studio, elaborating on that process."We bring in our community at Day Zero of the game making process, at the earliest stage of development so we can make a game that is ultimately the best it can be for our community."Deadrop had been slated to launch in 2025.Dr Disrespect controversy came to define Midnight SocietyAlthough it was working on a new shooter under the stewardship of former Infinity Ward creative lead Robert Bowling, who helped create acclaimed titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Midnight Society largely made headlines because of its affiliation with controversial streamer Guy Beahm, better known as Dr Disrespect.Last year, Beahm admitted he was banned from Twitch in 2020 for messaging a minoralthough he repeatedly edited and eventually deleted that confession (screenshots of which can still be found online) before claiming it was simply bait designed to lure in journalists. If you're thinking that sounds like a colossal stretchyou might not be alone. In his original statement, Beahm denied doing anything "illegal" but stated he sent "messages to an individual minor back in 2017" via a now defunct Twitch messaging platform."Were there Twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more," he stated in the now-deleted post."Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual. I went through a lengthy arbitration regarding a civil dispute with Twitch and that case was resolved by a settlement. Let me be clear, it was not a criminal case against me and no criminal charges have ever been brought against me."Just hours before his admission, Beahm was ousted from Midnight Society with the studio explaining it needed to maintain its "principles and standards."In the wake of that controversy, Game Developer senior editor Bryant Francis described the situation as a "wake up call for developers" willing to throw their lot in with internet personalities who so often court outrage.

  • Dr Disrespects Midnight Society studio shuts down before releasing its first game
    www.theverge.com
Meanwhile, YouTube is allowing Dr Disrespect to remonetize his account.Midnight Society, the game studio co-founded by Dr Disrespect (real name Herschel Guy Beahm) has shut down, killing the first-person shooter title it was developing. The studio made significant layoffs in September after terminating its relationship with the controversial streamer in June due to inappropriate messages he exchanged with a minor. On the same day, YouTube, which also took action against Beahm in June by demonetizing his account, decided to reinstate the streamers ability to make money on Googles video platform. The decision was made after careful review of the channels recent activity, according to a statement YouTube provided to Kotaku. If there are further violations, well take appropriate action.Midnight Society was co-founded in 2021 by Beahm, former Call of Duty creative strategist Robert Bowling, and former 343 Industries lead sandbox designer Quinn Delhoyo. We are actively seeking other game studios that would be interested in offering employment opportunities to our talented team members, Midnight Society said in its shutdown announcement on X. We express our sincere gratitude to each and every one of our community members and deeply sorry we were unable to reach our ultimate goal.pic.twitter.com/26DK9pWCaR Midnight Society (@12am) January 30, 2025The ultimate goal mentioned in Midnight Societys departing message was Deadrop a free-to-play vertical extraction shooter that was initially funded by selling NFTs at the height of the blockchain gaming frenzy. Deadrop was expected to release in 2024, and was the only game being developed by Midnight Society.

  • This crowdfunded E Ink QWERTY phone isnt vaporware after all
    www.theverge.com
When the Minimal Phone was first announced this time last year, you might have been forgiven for thinking it was vaporware. But one year and many delays later, the worlds first Android phone with both an E Ink display and a physical QWERTY keyboard has begun shipping to backers. In broad strokes, the Minimal Phone looks a bit like a BlackBerry, with a wide body and a squat screen perched above its streamlined QWERTY keyboard. Weve seen phones like this before. What makes it stand out is the screen itself, which is a monochrome E Ink panel at a whopping 600 x 800 resolution.Despite using E Ink tech, the Minimal Phone runs Android 14, so the only apps youre giving up are those that really cant run on the sluggish display and basic hardware you wont be popping many headshots in CoD: Mobile, I fear. Access to all your Android apps might put the lie to Minimal Companys promise of a distraction-free phone, but the company suggests that the E Ink panel still encourages you to use them more mindfully. On the smartphone-sized Boox Palma e-reader we found most Android apps just awful to use, which proved a neat way of removing their temptation to distract, so the company might be right after all. While the phone is basic in a few other ways its 16 megapixel camera looks unlikely to impress, and its limited to 4G LTE connections it packs a few unexpected perks too. NFC payments, a fingerprint sensor, and Qi wireless charging are all supported, and the inclusion of dual-SIM support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and expandable storage ticks off most of the old-school smartphone nerd wishlist.Originally set to ship to Indiegogo backers in August 2024, the Minimal Phone slipped to September, then December, and finally started heading out last week. The company says its shipping phones in the order they were purchased, running from now until March. You can also order the phone now for delivery in March, starting at $399, a $100 discount on the official retail price. Its chief competition comes from TCL, whose Nxtpaper phones deliver a regular Android phone experience with the option to flip a switch and enable an E Ink-like monochrome mode. Theres no physical keyboard though, so unless Clicks keyboard cases expand to fit more phones, the Minimal Phone is the only game in town for those who demand QWERTY and E Ink in the same handset.See More:

  • Peep Shows Best Episodes Ranked From Merely Great to Legendary
    www.denofgeek.com
British sitcom Peep Show ran on Channel 4 from 2003 to 2015. It followed the exploits of flatmates Mark Corrigan (David Mitchell) and Jeremy Usborne (Robert Webb), two thirtysomething friends one buttoned-down and neurotic, the other anarchic and possibly psychopathic who found themselves leaving university and entering the supposedly responsible phase of their lives still helplessly adrift on the sea of life without anchor or moral compass. Influenced by Being John Malkovich and Annie Hall, it gave viewers the chance to get inside its characters heads. While theres never been a comedy quite like it before or since, its influences and legacy are legion. Though it predates The Inbetweeners, Peep Show feels very much like a spiritual sequel, or at least a cultural companion piece. Its the Ghost of listless yet to come, giving the Es are good generation a chance to see what happens when the hormone-gilded, amoral follies of youth are allowed to harden like cement into a state of perpetual adolescence. There are also glimmers of BBC2s Bottom, but with less violence. And comparisons with Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia are inevitable, given the occasionally terrifying, horrifyingly adorable, personality-disordered misfits that populate both shows. Across nine series and 54 hilarious episodes, creators Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain used Mark and Jeremy to shine a light on both the horrors, hopes and absurdities of life in modern Britain, and the dark recesses of the human psyche. Here are 15 of their greatest outings, counting down to the (subjective!) best.15. On the Pull (Series 1, Episode 3)MARK Everythings decaying, so, the way I see it has there ever been a better time to save up for a very comfortable sofa?Mark and Jeremy blow off a party to go bowling with a pair of potential paramours, who represent one of their first, but by no means their last, sexually unethical choices. In Marks case attempting to buck against the middle-class, middle-of-the-road milieu that makes up his soul he hooks up with Valerie, a nave yet nihilistic teenage goth, while Jeremy drags along his sardonic, non-monogamous neighbour, Toni. As Mark continues to shore up his false self with alcohol, Jeremy leans into his authentic self with gluttony, giving Toni a front-row seat.JEZ What? Its eat as much as you can, you know?TONI No, its eat as much as you like. Theres no competitive element implied.JEZ At 3.99, I think I know whos winning. This early entry deftly and hilariously establishes the essential ingredients for the quintessential episode of Peep Show: a firm base of sexual desperation, a healthy serving of embarrassment, a garnish of farce, and a thick crust of shame and regret.14. Burgling (Series 5, Episode 1)JEZ Im his one.Its not often that Mark Corrigan and macho appear together in the same sentence, unless that sentence happens to be some variation of: Mark Corrigan is definitely not a macho man. In Burgling, however, Mark manages to rack up a substantial amount of man-points by bravely sitting on a young burglar he catches in the commission of his crime, then later imprisoning him on the balcony.Alas, its not enough to seal the deal with his beleaguered date, Heather, and its all rather undercut by Jeremy releasing said burglar from captivity and allowing a squad of angry young burglars into their flat to steal yet more of their possessions. But at least Mark is able to use his new-found control and restraint techniques against Jeremy, who hilariously narrates this unexpected development, movement by movement, in real-time, all the way down to the floor.13. The Test (Series 6, Episode 2)JEZ Just because Im dealing a little bit of drugs does not make me a drug dealer. If The Testepisode of Friends it might be called The One Where Jez Pretends to be the Father of Sophies Baby to Impress a New Neighbour He Wants to Sleep With, Thereby Launching Mark Into Heaven Then Straight Into the Jaws of a Mini Existential Crisis.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Mark really shouldve known better than to let a sentiment like Theres no knot in my stomach. For the first time in 25 years, Im free of a sense of creeping dread percolate in his thoughts for more than a second. It was inevitable that his relief and joy were going to be snatched from him by force; and exactly as inevitable as Jeremy being somehow behind it all.12. Jeremy in Love (Series 6, Episode 3)MARKIts remarkable, isnt it, that out of the three billion adult women in the world, your one true soulmate happens conveniently to live in the same block of flats as you, rather than, say, in a village in Mozambique? This episode is as close as Jeremy gets to an I am Spartacus moment. Its heartening that Jeremys skewed personality and misaligned inner-world can occasionally be harnessed as noble forces for good, even if it does manifest itself in deeply inappropriate ways.Jeremy falsely confesses to a pornography and masturbation addiction not once, but twice, the first time to save his girlfriends job, the second time because he (falsely) believes it will allow Mark to follow his dreams as a historical tour guide. Its hard not to view Jeremys new-found propensity for taking a wank bullet for the people he loves as oddly sweet, and possibly even heroic even if it did lose Mark his job.11. Jeremys Mummy (Series 5, Episode 4)JEZ Oh come on, she was my mums aunt. I only met her about twice. Its not like she was Ian Curtis. She was never going to make a seminal album. She couldnt even make very good Christmas cake.In the wake of a death in Jeremys family we meet his mother, Jackie, and suddenly the root of his mummy issues stand revealed: its the sort of toxic dynamic from which shower-peeping motel owners are sprung. Jeremys mother both infantilises him and neglects his emotional inner-life, while Jeremy in turn rails against her with the unrestrained anger and shallow vindictiveness of a toddler. In the end, though, its money that proves the most toxic influence, on Mark and Jeremy both. Jez has designs on a share of his dead aunts inheritance, which his mother is reluctant to give him. Mark has designs on a ghost-writing opportunity promised to him by Jackies paramour, Martin, an ex-military man with memoirs on his mind. Unfortunately, though, Natalie, Martins rather bolshy and aggressive daughter, has designs on Mark, and no isnt a word that appears in her lexicon. In any other show, perhaps other than Baby Reindeer, the sexual assault to which Natalie subjects Mark would be beyond the pale. In Peep Show, however, its just another day, and another highly dubious seam of comedy to be mined. The hellish absurdity lies in just how far Mark is willing to go to preserve his dreams of being a military historian. Maybe that was actually good sex. Loosen up, Corrigan. This is what happens in the bedroom now. No old-fashioned fumbling and kissing. A lesbian rapes you while you dream about your mother. Its edgy.Predictably, the dreams and schemes of both men come crashing down around them thanks to a decommissioned service revolver, and Jeremys habit of blurting out the truth for all the wrong reasons.10. Quantocking (Series 3, Episode 6)MARK Why wont that stupid bitch let me propose to her?Peep Show spent a considerable chunk of its life on the cancellation bubble, the exquisite writing and immaculate comedy performances rarely translating into solid viewing figures. While fans and comedy aficionados alike would breathe a collective sigh of relief with each successive renewal, Quantocking wouldnt have been the worst episode on which to bow out.Its vintage Peep Show. From Super Hans being trussed up in a posh country hotel like something out of Stephen Kings Misery Im being fucked by King Kong! to Marks increasingly hostile attempts to propose to Sophie, to Mark and Jeremys wanderings in the wilderness, Quantocking represents a perfect melding of quietly impactful character moments with hilarious set-pieces.In a final cruel twist, Marks Road to Damascus moment his realisation regarding the unviability of his relationship with Sophie is cruelly undercut by her unexpected and enthusiastic discovery of the engagement ring in his luggage, condemning them both to the very real prospect of unholy matrimony.9. Sophies Parents (Series 4, Episode 1)JEZ What about your doubts? Your crippling doubts?Sometimes, like Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm, the positions that Mark and Jeremy adopt, while undoubtedly dripping with cynicism, can appear so reasonable as to be almost inarguable; like when Mark sums up modern fashion thusly: Thats the way things are these days. Lets just put a zip here, a swastika there, why not? Who knows what these things were once used for. Who the hell even cares? But a weekend away to visit Sophies family quickly reminds us that Mark and Jeremy are far more often wrong than right. Jez very quickly ends up sleeping with Sophies mum Im a motherfucker. Thats literally what I am and both Mark and Jez go on to be complicit in Sophies dads firebombing of a love rivals barn. This is not the behaviour of sane or honourable men, though such men wouldnt be half as entertaining to watch.Mark rounds off his moral damnation by reassuring himself that although he doesnt love Sophie, at least hell be getting his hands on her grandmothers cottage. And has ever a more noble or romantic sentiment been expressed than this: So what if I dont really love her? Charles didnt really love Diana, and they were alright. Sort of.8. Wedding (Series 4, Episode 6)JEZ Yes Im doing it already. Im so pathetic that as soon as you ordered me to piss myself, I started the procedure. This is what youve done. Youve ground down my sense of self-worth over the years. I hope you are proud. If you didnt already know that Jesse Armstrong (and to a lesser extent Sam Bain) once wrote for The Thick of It, some of the dialogue in this episode might clue you in. At one point a suddenly semi-suicidal Mark decides to expose himself to the risk of a terrible traffic accident to avoid confronting his wedding doubts, and promptly steps in front of a strangers car. Perfectly able to stop in time, the stranger angrily berates Mark and receives in return a barrage of bizarre epithets that wouldnt have felt out of place being hurled through Malcolm Tuckers mouth. Jizz cock! Piss kidney! Later in the episode Jeremy reveals that he and Sophie kissed, thereby handing a grateful Mark what he believes are legitimate grounds for cancelling the wedding. He exclaims wildly: You shitty, faithless, back-stabbing beauty!Very few weddings in real life match the perfect fantasy each party has constructed in their heads. Its probably fair to say that very few weddings in real life end with the best mans urine dripping onto the congregation from the gallery above, or the bride and groom saying their I dos through a convulsive veil of tears. But then absolutely zero weddings in real life are as grimacingly, gut-wrenchingly funny as Marks and Sophies.7. Jurying (Series 3, Episode 5)MARK Frosties are just Cornflakes for people who cant face reality.Whilst on jury duty for a case of credit card fraud, Jez continues to explore moral hinterlands most humans wouldnt be able to find on a map. He begins a sexual relationship with the defendant and allows his penis to start swaying his peers in the direction of a not guilty verdict. However, on an evening out on the town with Mark and a coterie of Sophies drug-addled friends he discovers that while the defendant may be innocent of the crime in question, shes indisputably a reckless career criminal, and not one with whom hes keen to spend any more time. With his own self-interest dictating his actions (as per usual), Jez proceeds to do the sort-of-morally-right yet still murkily grey and almost definitely illegal thing by pushing for a guilty verdict, cloaking his speech to his fellow members of the jury in so many layers of impassioned righteousness that he almost comes off looking like a hero for the ages. This episode deserves inclusion on this list for Jezs speech alone, but Marks takedown of drug culture is similarly wonderful. After pretending to take ecstasy so he can look cool and vibe with Sophie and her new friends he finally tires of the charade and cuts them all down to size in his inimitably caustic fashion. Now pull your socks up and get your shoes on. Come on, all of you. Listen, while were at it, there are systems for a reason in this world. Economic stability, interest rates, growth. Its not all a conspiracy to keep you in little boxes, all right? Its only the miracle of consumer capitalism that means youre not lying in your own shit, dying at 43 with rotten teeth. And a little pill with a chicken on it is not going to change that. Now, come on. Fuck off.6. Dance Class (Series 2, Episode 1)MARK I love dancing cause it makes me look like a coma victim whos been stood up and zapped with a cattle prod.To thine own self be true is a Shakespearian maxim whose essence has rarely troubled Mark or Jeremy. Theyd much rather rely on fantasy, subterfuge and delusion to achieve their ends. And achieve is probably stretching it.Mark gains secret access to Sophies email account and uses it to Cyrano de Bergerac himself into her good graces, monitoring her thoughts in real time and tailoring his every move to be more appealing to her. This includes a trip to Sophies dance class, Rainbow Rhythms with Jeremy in tow where he tries to convince her that hes not the buttoned-down, stuffed-shirt she thinks he is. Which, of course, he absolutely is. Is this it? he thinks to himself as he surveys all the gyrations and positive affirmations erupting around him. Is this what my grandad died for? The freedom to do this? The action culminates in a trip to a lake-house in the country where skinny dipping, spin-the-bottle, cuckoldry, and Mark and Jez playing tonsil hockey with each other are very much the order of the day. Remarkably, Mark makes romantic inroads with Sophie. Inevitably, they go up in smoke once she discovers his privacy-based perfidy. 5. Seasons Beatings (Series 7, Episode 5)HANS Mind out, boys. Father Spliffmas coming through.Theres much to enjoy in this seasonal offering, but perhaps the surprise highlight is learning of the child-like glee with which Jeremy greets Christmas. Not only does he leap into it with innocence and wonder, but he proves himself incredibly thoughtful and generous into the bargain. Your heart breaks for him when you see the gifts hes gotten Mark versus the ironic handful he gets in return. Mark, however, refuses to feel guilty about it. Thats not fair. Thats just aggressive generosity designed to make me feel bad.Your heart aches again when Jeremy learns that Marks family routinely use his name as an adjective to describe acts of stupidity and incompetence. When their laughter is interrupted by the ringing of the doorbell Jez storms off to answer it with a parting shot of: Ill go see who that is. Lets hope I dont Jezz it, or do a big Mark in my pants. But the jewel in this episodes crown is the twisted dynamics of Marks family, from his spoiled, hyper-sexualised sister, keen to rekindle things with Jeremy, to his equally but more covertly hyper-sexualised mum (My mother is giving me socks depicting a sexual position I have never even attempted. How little she knows me.), to his bitter, jeering father, who gets his comeuppance in the end when Mark finally stands up for Dobby, and proceeds to feed his Christmas dinner through the lousy second-hand shredder his father gave him as a present.4. St Hospitals (Series 7, Episode 1)HANS But if youre tripping and youre having a baby, its like Fuck!, you know? You see a little guy come out of there, whats gonna happen next? Frogs out of her arsehole? Milk out of her ears? Anythings possible.Miracles happen in hospital. Mark discovers this when he wanders into a room only to find Jeremy reading a magazine out loud to a coma victim with seemingly no motivation except kindness. Mark is both awed and alarmed, as though hed just walked in on a dog performing brain surgery on a human patient. When a beautiful woman enters the room behind him and starts thanking Jeremy in familiar tones the realisation hits Mark like a solid beam of sunshine. Im actually quite relieved its a filthy, duplicitous ploy, he smiles, as the universe rights itself again. As Jeremy frames it to himself: Right now Im supporting man in a weepy, when I want to be leading man in a porno.Marks impending fatherhood is the reason both men are at the hospital. As Sophie prepares to endure a hard labour, Mark tries to greet his new role with an air of maturity and decorum, putting his old ways of running from responsibility behind him. And, of course, he fails miserably. At the first opportunity he flees the hospital, orders himself a delicious takeaway, and takes a long trip to the arcade to play video games. Fortunately, hes back in just enough time to welcome the next generation of Corrigan to the world. A changed man. Finally free of his petty obsessions and neuroses.Well. Sort of.3. Shrooming (Series 3, Episode 3)MARK How did we manage to get the one carpenter in Britain with a therapist?Jeremy sets a very low bar for himself as a human being, but even still, its revolting and fascinating in equal measure to watch him continually and steadily lower that bar. In this episode he sets it so low that a bacterium would struggle to limbo under it.A bout of gastric illness delays Marks departure for a work conference, and brings him back home for the night, which threatens Jeremys plans for a hedonistic shroom party. As he himself laments: This is my big chance with big Suze. Im going to try to get her really high and then put my hand up her jumper. It isnt long before Jeremys amoral nature comes to the fore, and Mark finds himself at the mercy of a series of psychopathic set-pieces.Shrooming has it all: an emotionally unstable carpenter, a broken bathroom door, drugs, diarrhoea, poisoning, imprisonment, a daring rescue, and a hilariously disgusting denouement. The episode ends with a bravura bit of gaslighting from Jeremy as he stands at the doorless bathroom sneering at a humiliated Mark: So, this is my big evening, is it? Me, tripping my nuts off, watching you do endless pooing. If I were you, Id think about what youve done. Just have a long, hard think about what youve done.2. University Challenge (Series 2, Episode 4)JEZ I was here in the glory years. Mid-90s. Britpop was kicking off. Four Weddings had just come out. It was mental.Mark and Jez go back to their old alma mater of Dartmouth University, and encounter a post-The Thick of It, pre-Who Peter Capaldi in full professorial snark. University Challenge is very much Peep Show does 21 Jump Street, but without either Mark or Jeremy having the excuse of being undercover cops trying to bust a drug syndicate. When Mark learns that Jeremy and Super Hans are touring with a band and playing at the university he jumps on their literal bandwagon. Not because hes invested in Jezs musical prospects or has a particular penchant for drinking from the heady well of nostalgia, but because he fancies a student who served him in the local shoe shop, and Dartmouth is where she goes to university.Although this storys focus is an older man essentially stalking a teenager across the country and masquerading as a mature student to her, its surprisingly sweet, earnest and brimming with pathos. Mark and Jez quickly learn, both separately and together, that you can never go back, and that back wasnt all it was cracked up to be in the first place. This is okay, Mark offers by way of a coda, as he loses the girl. This is just a moment that will haunt me forever. (The object of Marks affections returns in series nines Threeing, and while that episode didnt make this list it was a very close call.)1. Holiday (Series 4, Episode 5)MARK Jeremy, there are many things I would do to help you, but digging a hole in the wintry earth with my bare hands so that you can bury the corpse of a dog you killed is not one of them. Its not really a surprise, is it? Whats not to love here? Holiday is a near-perfect, ever-escalating farce, boasting Frasier-like levels of pomposity, pretentiousness, horror, and hubris, but through the looking glass very darkly, in a universe where even nay, especially Eddie the dog would be trembling in terror. The twin themes of Marks barge-based stag-do are very much self-delusion and deceit. How far will Mark go to escape his wedding obligations to Sophie? How far will Jeremy go to hide the fact that hes killed and burned a womans dog, and how low will he stoop to make sure that he still has a chance of sleeping with her despite it all? The answer is very far and very low indeed: unforgettably, outrageously, hilariously far and low. Peep Show is available to stream on Netflix and Channel4.com in the UK, and on Prime Video and Hulu in the US.

  • Check whether you qualify for share of $20M Apple Watch payout
    9to5mac.com
Way back in 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed against Apple, alleging a defect in early Apple Watch models that could allegedly cause the display to crack or detach from the casing. While Apple has acknowledged some issues related to swollen batteries, and offered free service, it refused coverage for cracked or detached screens. The company has now agreed to a financial settlement for this The swollen batteries issueThe issue first came to light in 2017, when owners of the original Apple Watch (Series 0) reported that swollen batteries were resulting in the display being pushed up from the casing. Apple responded by offering a free three-year extended warranty for the issue. The same issue occurred with some Series 2 models, namely the 42mm versions of Sport, Nike+, Herms, and Edition models. This time Apple technically didnt extend the warranty, but said instead that it would offer free service for this issue for up to three years regardless of warranty status. Finally, a new issue arose with some Series 3 GPS models: visible stripe markings on the display. It was suggested that this too may have been caused by swollen batteries applying pressure to the screen.Cracked and detached displaysSome Apple Watch owners found that their displays cracked, or detached from the casing. Although these issues were also claimed to result from swollen batteries, Apple did not acknowledge this, nor offer any in-warranty or out-of-warranty coverage, stating instead that display damage fell under the heading of accidental damage.A class action lawsuit was filed in 2018, alleging that Apple was aware of defects in Series 0 to Series 3 models inclusive, yet was refusing warranty claims.Apple knew that the Watches were defective at or before the time it began selling them to the public. Furthermore, consumers complained to Apple about the Defect almost immediately after Apple released the Series 0, Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 Watches []Further, Apples conduct, when confronted with the Defect, indicates that its internal policy is to deny the existence of the Defect, claim the Defect is the result of accidental damage caused by consumers, and then refuse to honor its Limited Warranty on those grounds.$20M Apple Watch payoutApple has never accepted the claims made in the lawsuit, but CNET reports that the company has now agreed to a settlement worth a total of $20M.In a statement sent to CNET, Apple pushed back on the claims, stating the Apple Watch is designed to be safe and reliable. This settlement applies to purchasers of Original Apple Watch, Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3, which are no longer available for purchase, the company said in a statement. While we strongly disagree with the claims made against these early generation Apple Watch models, we agreed to settle to avoid further litigation. The payout will range from $20 to $50 each, depending on how many people file claims.Eligibility, and how to claim paymentTo qualify, you must:Have owned an affected Apple Watch model in the USHave reported it to Apple between April 24, 2015, and Feb 6, 2024Apple will automatically notify those with a valid claim, so no action on your part is required to be included in the settlement. The payout will be made to the payment method Apple has on file for you. However, to be safe its recommended that you visit this link to ensure that your payment details are up to date. You can only do this after Apple has contacted to provide your unique login codes. • Top 5 AI-Powered Social Engineering Attacks
    thehackernews.com
Jan 31, 2025Ravie LakshmananArtificial Intelligence / CybercrimeSocial engineering has long been an effective tactic because of how it focuses on human vulnerabilities. There's no brute-force 'spray and pray' password guessing. No scouring systems for unpatched software. Instead, it simply relies on manipulating emotions such as trust, fear, and respect for authority, usually with the goal of gaining access to sensitive information or protected systems.Traditionally that meant researching and manually engaging individual targets, which took up time and resources. However, the advent of AI has now made it possible to launch social engineering attacks in different ways, at scale, and often without psychological expertise. This article will cover five ways that AI is powering a new wave of social engineering attacks. The audio deepfake that may have influenced Slovakia electionsAhead of Slovakian parliamentary elections in 2023, a recording emerged that appeared to feature candidate Michal Simecka in conversation with a well-known journalist, Monika Todova. The two-minute piece of audio included discussions of buying votes and increasing beer prices. After spreading online, the conversation was revealed to be fake, with words spoken by an AI that had been trained on the speakers' voices. However, the deepfake was released just a few days before the election. This led many to wonder if AI had influenced the outcome, and contributed to Michal Simecka's Progressive Slovakia party coming in second. The $25 million video call that wasn't In February 2024 reports emerged of an AI-powered social engineering attack on a finance worker at multinational Arup. They'd attended an online meeting with who they thought was their CFO and other colleagues. During the videocall, the finance worker was asked to make a $25 million transfer. Believing that the request was coming from the actual CFO, the worker followed instructions and completed the transaction.Initially, they'd reportedly received the meeting invite by email, which made them suspicious of being the target of a phishing attack. However, after seeing what appeared to be the CFO and colleagues in person, trust was restored. The only problem was that the worker was the only genuine person present. Every other attendee was digitally created using deepfake technology, with the money going to the fraudsters' account.Mother's $1 million ransom demand for daughterPlenty of us have received random SMSs that start with a variation of 'Hi mom/dad, this is my new number. Can you transfer some money to my new account please?' When received in text form, it's easier to take a step back and think, 'Is this message real?' However, what if you get a call and you hear the person and recognize their voice? And what if it sounds like they've been kidnapped? That's what happened to a mother who testified in the US Senate in 2023 about the risks of AI-generated crime. She'd received a call that sounded like it was from her 15-year-old daughter. After answering she heard the words, 'Mom, these bad men have me', followed by a male voice threatening to act on a series of terrible threats unless a $1 million ransom was paid. Overwhelmed by panic, shock, and urgency, the mother believed what she was hearing, until it turned out that the call was made using an AI-cloned voice.Fake Facebook chatbot that harvests usernames and passwordsFacebook says: 'If you get a suspicious email or message claiming to be from Facebook, don't click any links or attachments.' Yet social engineering attackers still get results using this tactic. They may play on people's fears of losing access to their account, asking them to click a malicious link and appeal a fake ban. They may send a link with the question 'is this you in this video?' and triggering a natural sense of curiosity, concern, and desire to click.Attackers are now adding another layer to this type of social engineering attack, in the form of AI-powered chatbots. Users get an email that pretends to be from Facebook, threatening to close their account. After clicking the 'appeal here' button, a chatbot opens which asks for username and password details. The support window is Facebook-branded, and the live interaction comes with a request to 'Act now', adding urgency to the attack.'Put down your weapons' says deepfake President Zelensky As the saying goes: The first casualty of war is the truth. It's just that with AI, the truth can now be digitally remade too. In 2022, a faked video appeared to show President Zelensky urging Ukrainians to surrender and stop fighting in the war against Russia. The recording went out on Ukraine24, a television station that was hacked, and was then shared online.A still from the President Zelensky deepfake video, with differences in face and neck skin toneMany media reports highlighted that the video contained too many errors to be believed widely. These include the President's head being too big for the body, and placed at an unnatural angle. While we're still in relatively early days for AI in social engineering, these types of videos are often enough to at least make people stop and think, 'What if this was true?' Sometimes adding an element of doubt to an opponent's authenticity is all that's needed to win.AI takes social engineering to the next level: How to respondThe big challenge for organizations is that social engineering attacks target emotions and evoke thoughts that make us all human. After all, we're used to trusting our eyes and ears, and we want to believe what we're being told. These are all-natural instincts that can't just be deactivated, downgraded, or placed behind a firewall. Add in the rise of AI, and it's clear these attacks will continue to emerge, evolve, and expand in volume, variety, and velocity. That's why we need to look at educating employees to control and manage their reactions after receiving an unusual or unexpected request. Encouraging people to stop and think before completing what they're being asked to do. Showing them what an AI-based social engineering attack looks and most importantly, feels like in practice. So that no matter how fast AI develops, we can turn the workforce into the first line of defense. Here's a 3-point action plan you can use to get started:Talk about these cases to your employees and colleagues and train them specifically against deepfake threats to raise their awareness, and explore how they would (and should) respond.Set up some social engineering simulations for your employees so they can experience common emotional manipulation techniques, and recognize their natural instincts to respond, just like in a real attack.Review your organizational defenses, account permissions, and role privileges to understand a potential threat actor's movements if they were to gain initial access.Found this article interesting?
