• WhatsApp Hack Attack Confirmed By MetaWhat You Need To Know
    www.forbes.com
Meta confirms new WhatsApp spyware attack.AFP via Getty ImagesCommunication is so much easier than it was just a few decades ago and so much more dangerous. Gmail users have just been warned about the most sophisticated AI-based attack, social media is a breeding ground for new threats, and even iPhone users cant escape the cyber attackers. Meta has confirmed that a zero-click, no-interaction required hacking attack has impacted users of the WhatsApp secure messaging platform. Heres what we know so far.Confirmed: WhatsApp Users Impacted By Zero-Click Hack AttackAs first reported by The Guardian, WhatsApp users have been targeted by a sophisticated spyware hack attack requiring no user interaction. WhatsApp told the newspaper that it had high confidence the users it had reached out to had been targeted and possibly compromised.Although the precise details of this latest, and frankly highly concerning, cyberattack against WhatsApp users are limited at this moment in time, Meta has confirmed that the hack targeted a number of users including journalists and members of civil society, and is currently notifying those thought to have been victims of the as yet unnamed attackers. This is the latest example of why spyware companies must be held accountable for their unlawful actions. WhatsApp will continue to protect peoples ability to communicate privately, a Meta spokesperson said. What we do know is that a group of some 90 high-risk WhatsApp users were targeted, although Meta has not confirmed where they were located geographically although it is believed they were from more than 20 countries. What it has said, however, is that those users were compromised by spyware from an Israel-based software company called Paragon Solutions. It is understood that Meta has issued a cease and desist letter to Paragon and is exploring further legal avenues. Paragon, meanwhile, is yet to comment.MORE FOR YOUParagons spyware is known as Graphite and has capabilities that are comparable to NSO Groups Pegasus spyware, Stephanie Kirchgaessner, deputy head of investigations for The Guardian U.S., said, Once a phone is infected with Graphite, the operator of the spyware has total access to the phone, including being able to read messages that are sent via encrypted applications like WhatsApp and Signal. This is a breaking story, and I will update it as more information becomes available.

  • Apples New Game Changer iPhone Update Brings Starlink Satellite Access
    www.forbes.com
Updated Feb. 1 with more details of the new service and how it will work.Apple has just released iOS 18.3, its latest iPhone update (full details here) and the software contained a surprise extra: compatibility with the Starlink satellite network, according to a new report. And more details show how the system will work and exactly how its different from existing serviceswith one very cool change that means youre no longer pointing your phone at .Some Apple iPhones now have access to Starlink's satellite network. 2025 Bloomberg Finance LPApple Inc. has been secretly working with SpaceX and T-Mobile US Inc. to add support for the Starlink network in its latest iPhone software, providing an alternative to the companys in-house satellite-communication service, according to Bloombergs Mark Gurman.Gurman describes the software update that supports the technology as an under-the-radar move, and the tie-up between the companies as a surprise. While T-Mobile already had a Starlink satellite option for users to send emergency messages when outside cellular range, it was for Samsung phones only. And Apples Emergency SOS via satellite service used the rival Globalstar network.MORE FOR YOUA post on X from Mario Nawfal, founder of IBC Group, described the update as a game changer, saying Apple quietly adds Starlink to iPhones in iOS 18.3. Since Apple already has its Globalstar service, why is this a game-changer?Well, as Nawfal puts it, The key difference? No more pointing your phone at the skyStarlink works right from your pocket. Nawfals comment was reposted by Elon Musk, who said that Medium resolution images, music & audio podcasts should work with the current generation Starlink direct-to-phone constellation. Next generation constellation will do medium resolution video.A small number of iPhones on the T-Mobile network have been enabled to work as a beta test, receiving messages saying, Youre in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.T-Mobile said that the test will start with select optimized smartphones but that the full launch will support the vast majority of modern smartphones, and that it had opened the beta to some Android phone users running the latest software, Android 15.The move from Apple to supporting other satellite networks beyond Globalstar has often been suggested, with Elon Musk saying that hed had conversations with Apple about Starlink involvement back in 2022.The system will work so that when a T-Mobile phone thats part of the Starlink program is outside cellular connectivity, it will try to pair with SpaceX satellites. Users will also be able to activate texting via the satellite menu for the Globalstar service or contact emergency services through Apple, according to the report.Users in the program have a new toggle switch in their iPhone cellular data settings to manage the satellite feature, Gurman says. The first version is just for texting, but SpaceX and T-Mobile say they have plans to expand into data connections and voice calls in due course. The service will work automatically, with an iPhone on T-Mobile connecting to SpaceX satellites when out of cellular connectivity. Right now, the number of iPhones in the beta is minimal, with T-Mobile planning to expand the program in February, Gurman adds.Right now, you need to be in the U.S. to be able to have this connectivity, and will apply to handsets from the iPhone 14 onwards.

  • Big Tech isn't backing down from its big AI spending
    www.businessinsider.com
Tech giants appeared to defend their heavy AI investments during their latest earnings calls. Both Meta and Microsoft plan to spend over $60 billion on building out AI infrastructure this year.DeepSeek's seemingly cheaper AI model has raised questions.DeepSeek may have spooked investors at the start of the week, but tech giants are doubling down on their plans to invest heavily in AI.Apple, Microsoft, Meta, and more reported earnings on Wednesday and Thursday. One of the major topics people were interested in was whether execs would comment on whether Chinese company DeepSeek's seemingly cheaper AI model would change US corporations' lofty spending goals. The answer appeared to be a resounding no."Huge week for Big Tech earnings as Zuckerberg, Nadella, Cook, and Musk doubled down on their AI visions and what this means for each of these tech stalwarts looking ahead," Dan Ives, managing directorpost, referring to Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Apple's Tim Cook, and Tesla and xAI's Elon Musk."This is an AI arms race and the Temu of AI DeepSeek not changing thatAI Revolution just starting," Ives continued.Investors had been concerned whether a less-expensive open-source AI model like DeepSeek's R1 would highlight that Big Tech companies had been splashing out too much on building out infrastructure like data centers filled with costly chips or that less-expensive models would stop them being able to charge customers as much to access them. However, Big Tech stuck with its spending plans. Meta, for example, said it's still planning for $60 billion to $65 billion in capex for its AI strategy in 2025. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said "investing aggressively" in these initiatives will be the determining factor in Meta's financial trajectory in the coming years.Meanwhile, Microsoft told investors that demand for AI is so high that it's struggling to provide enough data centers."Already, our AI business has surpassed an annual revenue run rate of $13 billion, up 175% year-over-year," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the FY 2025 Q2 earnings call. The company plans to spend $80 billion on AI data centers this fiscal year. Many companies said that cheaper AI models would broaden access to the technology, therefore increasing demand and justifying their spending on chips and data centers.Zuckerberg told investors that Meta is working to set an "American standard" for open-source models globally as they become more accessible."If anything, some of the recent news has only strengthened our conviction that this is the right thing for us to be focused on," Zuck said on the Wednesday call.DeepSeek disrupted the market in January with a new AI model that its researchers said was trained at a fraction of the cost less than $6 million that US tech companies are investing. Shares of many competitors, including Microsoft and Alphabet, fell on concerns that a cheaper model showed they might have been overspending.Apple CEO Tim Cook has been criticized for launching Apple Intelligence later than competitors and taking a more cautious approach. However, that meant the company was insulated from the hit other stocks took from the DeepSeek news ahead of Thursday's call. While he didn't discuss how much the iPhone maker plans to spend on AI this year, Cook said, "From a CapEx point of view, we've always taken a very prudent, deliberative approach to our expenditure."Over at Tesla, CEO Elon Musk was all about real-world AI during the Q4 earnings call on Wednesday. Musk told analysts he's "making rapid progress" on technology when asked about accelerating innovation. He didn't mention DeepSeek but said "the cost of training is dropping dramatically with time," as Tesla ramps up its efforts in developing its humanoid robot, Optimus.

  • Supper clubs are having a renaissance as Gen Z shuns nights on the town
    www.businessinsider.com
Global trend forecaster WGSN says Gen Z is bringing back supper clubs. It comes as young people are seeking social activities that don't involve alcohol.A Gen Z supper clubber said she and her peers are "graduating" from their clubbing phase. When Ananya Sharma, a 25-year-old marketing manager, moved from India to London in 2023, she knew next to no one.Having grown up in a tight-knit community where close friends or family were never too far, isolation dawned on her."I felt like, 'I'm pretty much the only person in London that doesn't have friends'," she told Business Insider. While there's no shortage of events and apps geared toward in-person socializing in cities like London, Sharma wasn't a fan. They're "intimidating," she said, and often make you feel as if "you almost have to perform a little bit to appeal to people."At the same time, like many Gen Zers, the idea of going to a bar or nightclub to meet new people had lost its charm. As Sharma puts it, she's "graduating" from her clubbing and drinking phase into enjoying "more wholesome activities." Sharma began hosting her version of a supper club, which she calls her "At home caf," after moving to London from India. Courtesy of Ananya Sharma Options limited, Sharma turned to supper clubs a dining concept that commonly involves hosting friends and perfect strangers for a meal in your own home.Although supper clubs date back to the 1900s, global trend forecaster WGSN says they're making a 21st-century comeback with an increasing number of young people "hosting their own supper clubs, themed parties, and unique dining experiences for their chosen families."A connection you can only find at homeSharma likes to call her version of a supper club an "at-home caf."When she started it last year, the first iterations were relatively low-stakes the guest list comprised a couple of neighbors, her landlady, and her landlady's daughters, and the menu included coffee, matcha, and homemade cookies.Things soon picked up. After posting about her supper club online, Sharma said hundreds of strangers started reaching out some of whom have become friends."I recently did one with a bunch of my friends that I've made through TikTok," Sharma said. "It was a great way to sit down and have conversations in an intimate setting." Aidan Brooks is a professional chef who runs a supper club at his East London home. Courtesy of Eleven 98 For Aidan Brooks, a professional chef who runs an established supper club called Eleven 98 from his home in east London, the young generations' fascination speaks to their changing values."Each subsequent generation is becoming more health conscious, more environmentally conscious," he said. "If people are looking for a more socially and health-conscious type of thing to do, supper clubs kind of pop up at the top of both of those lists."In an era when prices are rising yet dining options seem endless, Punam Vaja, host of another east London supper club called Khao Suppers, told BI that supper clubs offer young people a chance to form connections over a more budget-friendly experience that you "probably won't find in a restaurant."Unlike restaurant chefs who stick to certain menus, supper club hosts can easily take "creative liberties," Sharma, the Gen Z supper club host, said."I've seen so many other people who do regional cuisines or themed dinners or lunches," she said. "I heard someone do a 1980s Italian disco-themed supper club, which I thought was so cool."Looking for friends, IRLIn the years since the pandemic, Gen Z has developed a reputation as "Generation Stay At Home." They care less about climbing the corporate ladder, are morehealth conscious, and very much enjoy spending weekends "bed rotting," aka tucked between the sheets with snacks, TV, and books on rotation, rather than at a bar. That doesn't mean they aren't social. On the contrary, supper clubs may go to show that they are even more open to connecting with others than older generations. Sharma said she and her fellow Gen Zers are replacing boozy nights out with more "wholesome activities" like supper clubs. Courtesy of Ananya Sharma Vaja said young people are more open to a supper club experience that requires entering a stranger's house than "older people" who "might be a bit hesitant" because they're used to restaurants. To Ariel Pastore-Sebring, a supper club host based in Portland, Oregon, the supper club renaissance may be a symptom of how Gen Z missed years of socializing during the pandemic."It's so intimate, and I think that's what this next generation is craving, especially after COVID," she said. "I could see why the idea of cramming into some New York City apartment with strangers at a candlelit table sounds pretty cool."As a night out on the town loses its cool, 2025 could be the year of the supper club.

  • Why I think Sony needs to stop releasing PS5 games on PC Readers Feature
    metro.co.uk
Why I think Sony needs to stop releasing PS5 games on PC Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished February 1, 2025 9:00am Marvels Spider-Man 2 is now available on PC (Sony Interactive Entertainment)A reader wishes Sony would give up on its policy of porting PS5 games to PC and argues its undermining the whole point of having a console.I have been watching with detached interest the reports about Xbox this week, about it being the biggest games company in the world, about how Call Of Duty has done little or nothing to improve Game Pass subscription numbers, and how more Xbox exclusives are now coming to PlayStation 5. I dont own an Xbox, and havent since the Xbox 360 era, so none of this affects me, but it is strange to see what used to be the PlayStations arch rivalry essentially go third party. As most sensible PlayStation owners will tell you, Sony needs strong opposition to keep them in check. Without it any company that ends up with a monopoly (just look at Nintendo during the NES era) will become anti-consumer, no matter what good intentions they had when they were challenging the previous incumbent.Every gamer knows that the bedrock of any format is its exclusive games; that is the primary reason why you buy a console. Removing that makes the Xbox completely irrelevant to most people, because why invest in a format that has no exclusives when that means missing out on the one that does. More than ever, exclusives are vital to PlayStation and thats why I think they should abandon the PC.Im not going to go over all the things Sony has been doing wrong this generation we all know what theyve been like but I think that, even more than the problem of not enough games, the biggest issue is their refusal to explain or communicate what theyre trying to do. Maybe theres a good reason why theyve released hardly anything in the last two years, but we can only guess because they never tell us.Likewise, theyve never said why they started porting PlayStation 5 games to the PC, even though it seems, on the face of it, to be a very bad idea. They just started a few years ago, I think the first one was Horizon Zero Dawn, and that was it: no explanation, no discussion, and no obvious point.Obviously, theyll make money from selling them but most of the games have been a flop. Until Dawn and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered somehow managed to sell even less than Concord, while The Last Of Us did very poorly and I read today that Marvels Spider-Man 2 has also had a very weak start. So making money is clearly not working out as a reason for doing it. The big exception is Helldivers 2 but if Sony wants to release all their live service titles on PC thats fine, I dont care about that. What I do care about is their proper games being released on PC.Each game that loses its exclusivity is one more reason not to buy a PlayStation 5 and Im not sure why Sony dont see this. There have been some hints that theyre beginning to rethink but until they say something (fat chance!) or I see a change in policy Im going to assume not.Maybe Sony is happy to turn into a third party publisher like Microsoft. I assume not but if thats the case they are undermining the most important selling point of their console for no financial gain. It doesnt matter if its a minor game that nobody cares about, like Until Dawn, thats still one less exclusive for the console and another game having its name being dragged through the dirt.More TrendingI like consoles. I dont want to buy a PC and have to worry about upgrades and compatibility and driver updates. I want to turn on my console, select my game and thats it. That is the experience that has made PlayStation such a success for the last three decades and a I do not understand why they are throwing it away for absolutely no reason.By reader Gooch Is Sony undermining its own product?
