• This terrible Samsung camera ruined my day out

It was a compact digital camera also made by Samsung, which Id purchased on a whim before a trip nearly a decade ago.I havent used it since then, and seeing as I was already testing a Samsung camera, why not add another to the list? The next day I was headed out to take photos for my upcoming S25 Ultra review, and Im so glad I wasnt relying on the old Samsung camera to document my time, as it would have ruined it.Recommended VideosSamsung ST72 Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsPicking the Samsung ST72 camera up again reminded me why I bought it: its size. Its less than half the size of the Galaxy S25 Ultra and I can easily carry it around in my pocket or bag, barely knowing its there. Theres a sensibly sized screen on the back, a physical two-stage shutter release on the top, and it even has a zoom feature.RelatedI looked up the rest of the specification to compare it to the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The main 1/2.3-inch sensor has 16.2-megapixels and a 5x optical zoom, plus it has that 3-inch LCD screen on the back. Its not quite up there with the Galaxy S25 Ultras 200MP main camera, 50MP wide-angle, and two telephoto cameras, but it can (on paper) match one of the optical zoom modes.Samsung ST72 Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsThe problem was, I couldnt remember if the ST72 took good photos or not. I know I used it on a trip, but looking back most of my memories from it were captured with my iPhone at the time. Was this because the ST72 took rubbish pictures? I found out, and wasnt quite prepared for just how awful it really is.1. Samsung ST722. Samsung Galaxy S25 UltraThe Samsung ST72 came out in 2013 but you can still find it for sale today on eBay, and for a temptingly low price. I certainly wasnt approaching this comparison as a way to offer serious buying advice, as Id expect the $1,300 Galaxy S25 Ultra to take better photos than the $120 ST72 camera. What I didnt expect was to see such a huge difference, and it really shows how far things have come.Lets start out with a basic, simple photograph of a church on a very bright winter day. Its staggering just how poor the ST72s photo is, with messy blurring and smudging in the foreground, unsteady focus throughout, a complete lack of detail, unwanted noise, and no visual pop at all. Even looked at on its own, few would be pleased with the ST72s photo and likely never return to it in the future.1. Samsung ST722. Samsung Galaxy S25 UltraCompare it with the Galaxy S25 Ultras photo, and theres no contest. I love the S25 Ultras colors and visual excitement, and the way it truly captured the wonderful winter blue sky. The second photo shows a sunset after a day of rain, except Id have to tell you that was why I took the photo if the only evidence I had was the ST72s image. Its f/2.5 aperture doesnt help here at all, and its unable to capture the depth of color visible to the naked eye. The S25 Ultras photo looks great, and no such verbal explanation of the scene would be required with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The f/1.8 aperture means its far more capable in low or difficult lighting, and although the photo isnt perfect its a little smudgy and noisy its obvious why I took the photo, and with a little editing it would be really beautiful.1. Samsung ST72 5x zoom2. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 5x zoomAt this point Id only seen the ST72s photos on the cameras LCD screen, and they didnt look great then. However, I convinced myself the screen may not be doing the actual photos justice, and continued to take photos during the day. The ST72 also has an optical zoom feature, just like the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and thinking back this may have been a reason I chose it. Even then, when I wasnt all that interested or knowledgeable about cameras or photography, I clearly wanted the versatility of a capable zoom. However, I was to be very disappointed by the results.Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsTheres such a huge difference between the two 5x zoom photos of the bridge, its practically impossible to believe the pair technically used the same feature. Picking the ST72s photo apart seems like a waste of time, as even if youd never seen a photograph before, ever, youd still know it was rubbish. It has more in common with digital zoom photos taken with an aging smartphone than it does with the Galaxy S25 Ultras capable 5x optical zoom.1. Samsung ST722. Samsung Galaxy S25 UltraDid the ST72 fail completely? There was one photo where I think it did a slightly better job than the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Taken inside a shop, the ST72s photo of the budding flowers wrapped in paper is brighter and less punchy, in a good way, than the S25 Ultras photo. The colors are natural, the white balance effective, and theres a decent level of detail too. The S25 Ultras photo is over saturated, and Im not sure it got the exposure right. However, one photo cannot save the Samsung ST72, and neither can its admittedly lovely size and shape. Its absolutely not the Samsung camera anyone should be using in 2025. If my day out was one where I wanted to truly capture memories, it would have ruined them. Its really surprising just how much difference there is between a digital camera from 10 years ago and todays smartphones. Sure, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is a lot more expensive, but I think all but the very worst smartphone camera today would still beat the ST72 in a back-to-back test.Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsIt highlights how spoiled we are by what our phones cameras are capable of, and after using the ST72 again, I assume I hid it away all those years ago because I was distinctly unimpressed by its ability. At the time I would have had the choice of the Apple iPhone 5S, the Nokia Lumia 1020, and the LG G2 smartphones, and I am almost certain all would gave taken considerably better photos than the ST72.The little Samsung camera is headed back to its drawer, where itll serve as a reminder of how lucky we are having such excellent cameras with us all day, because based on the actual photos it takes, thats all its good for. As for the Galaxy S25 Ultras camera, its looking great, but other more relevant comparisons reveal if it genuinely has what it takes to take on, and beat, its peers.Editors Recommendations

  • Instagram might be the most popular new dating app, new data shows
    www.businessinsider.com
Single adults are shifting from dating apps to social media to find partners.Instagram is now the top platform for meeting new people, according to data from Rizz.Rizz, an AI dating assistant, helps users craft replies and has half a million monthly active users.Single adults are fed up with dating apps. TheyInstagram is the most popular place to meet and communicate with a potential partner, at least for the hundreds of thousands of people using Rizz, an AI dating assistant.Rizz, which is slang for charisma, launched in 2022. It functions like a dating coach, helping users craft witty responses to messages and less cringey pick-up lines."Dating coaches charge $30 to $300 an hour. Not everybody can afford paying over $30 an hour. So the moment ChatGPT launched, I already had this idea in the back of my mind," Rizz cofounder and CEO Roman Khaves told Business Insider.Users upload screenshots of conversations from dating apps, messaging apps, or social media to Rizz, which then generates a response. The app leverages ChatGPT but fine-tunes its responses based on prior responses it generated. So the more you use it, the better and more personalized its responses will be, Khaves said.Rizz costs $7 a week or $20 a month and has about half a million monthly active users. The platform's user base is 65% male and 35% female and most of them fall between 18 and 35. They're largely from English-speaking countries.Khaves shared data with BI showing that 22% of the screenshots uploaded to Rizz now come from Instagram, an 8% increase from a year ago. About 15% come from iMessage and 11% from WhatsApp. Dating apps comprise a smaller share, with Tinder at 11%, Hinge at 10%, and Bumble at 4%. Messaging and social media are a growing destination for dating, according to data from Rizz. Rizz It's not uncommon for potential partners to meet on a dating app and quickly move their conversation to text or even Instagram. But Rizz sees evidence in the data that Instagram is becoming a first-choice destination for dating."Instagram has evolved into this fascinating dual-purpose platform for relationships," Khaves said. "Whether it's sliding into DMs or naturally connecting through shared content, people are both starting and deepening their connections entirely within Instagram."Dating on Instagram isn't new. Celebrity couples like Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, or exes Dua Lipa and Anwar Hadid and regular couples alike have found love on Instagram. The data from Rizz shows it's only becoming more popular as users give up on regular dating apps.Rizz's algorithms can track the source of screenshots, distinguishing whether a user uploads them from an Instagram story or a direct message. What's less clear is the history behind the relationship. "The one thing we don't know is how long they know the person, whether they've been friends with them on Instagram for a while or not," Khaves said.Rizz is already developing features tailored to Instagram, where the first move could be linked to a story or a picture rather than a prompt on Hinge. Instagram also introduced a feature in September that allows users to leave comments under stories, making it easier for mutual followers to interact with each other. The reason people are moving away from dating apps might be simple they offer too much data about a person upfront."Think about it in real life, you don't walk up to someone with a resume of your height, job, and dating intentions. Instead, you get to know them gradually through shared moments and mutual interests, which is exactly what Instagram enables," Khaves said.

  • I took my children to Space Club, an indoor play area in NYC. It felt expensive for 3 kids but was well worth the price.

The space is massive and has so many rooms to explore. The author's kids really enjoyed the sequin wall at Space Club. Courtesy of the author Prior to our move, I spent a lot of time with my oldest child in similar play spaces in New York, but they always felt cramped, dirty, and stinky. When we first entered Space, it was clear the playground was doing something different. The lobby is wide and open. There are coat hangers and shoe racks since all visitors must go in wearing socks with grips, which are provided. No shoes are allowed inside, not even for parents. There are tables for kids to eat snacks at when taking a break from playing and so many rooms to explore. As soon as they were ready, my kids all ran in different directions. There's a room with a giant white bounce house that my twins immediately gravitated to.Other rooms include an area with foam blocks where kids can build structures, an area for younger kids with age-appropriate activities, a huge ball pit with climbing structures and hanging ropes, a bead room, a music room, a glow-in-the-dark room, a sequin wall, a Lego blocks area, and a hamster-wheel wall.

  • MultiVersus Dies a Second, Final Death in May
    gizmodo.com
MultiVersus, the Warner Bros. IP platform fighter from Player First Games, is coming to an end on May 30. On Friday, Player First revealed the game would receive its fifth and final season this Tuesday, February 4. The season will last until the end of May, after which MultiVersus gets delisted and its online functions rendered inert. After that date, players can redownload the game and access its offline functions for the forseeable future. Aquaman and Lola Bunny will join the roster with the new season, and the developer said theyll be completely earnable through gameplay: the DC hero is relegated to the seasons first battle pass tier, and you can get Lola just by logging into the game. We want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supportedMultiVersus, wrote Player First. All of us herehave poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the community throughout this journey. MultiVersusinitially hit with its open beta back in 2022, which lasted for nearly a full year before Player First took it offline to complete development. The game came back with a vengeance in 2024 with a new look and more characters, but players had issues with its grind and monetization, plus changes made from beta to full release. This is the second of two live-service games from WB to stumble this year, following on from Rocksteadys Suicide Squadgoing out with a muted bang back in January. With MultiVersus going away, its unclear what this means for Player First. WB acquired the studio last year after the games relaunch, and this has been its sole credit. In 2022, game director Tony Huynh said the studio was unaffected by WBs merger with Discoverybut after Rocksteady recently wiped its hands of Squad, both itand co-developer WB Games Montreal cut a sizable amount of their respective staff. The project involves the renovation and expansion of a residence located in the heart of Coyoacn. Efforts to optimize resources resulted in the enlargement of the original space, which now functions as an art studio and production workshop.Save this picture!Save this picture!Daniela Riquelme, a Mexico City-based artist specializing in painting and jewelry, initially used the upper floor of the house as her studio and workshop. Over time, however, she found the space inadequate for her artistic practice, particularly due to limitations in space and lighting.Save this picture!Consequently, the renovation of the workshop focused on a comprehensive transformation of the upper floor to better support artistic production. This transformation included creating new openings, installing custom furniture, carpentry, and ironwork, applying color, adding an exhibition area to the studio workshop program, and, most importantly, introducing abundant natural light.Save this picture! The expansion program is centered around a preexisting spiral staircase that divides the workshop into two sections. The first section features a studio area with access to a terrace, offering views of the treetops that line the streets of central Coyoacn. From this space, one enters a more private area that includes a full bathroom. Along the opposite wall, a custom carpentry unit extends across the depth of the space, providing ample storage for objects, books, and materials essential to Danielas creative process. This unit includes shelving, a drafting table, drawers, and a sturdy workbench with a sink designed for handling materials.Save this picture! The sink is located in the rear section of the workshop, which was expanded from the original floor plan. A circulation area next to the staircase, directly beneath a skylight, connects the two sections. This skylight fills the hallway and staircase with light, while a grated platform in this area allows light to filter down to the house's first floor, illuminating the public spaces that would otherwise lack natural light.Save this picture!Save this picture! The expanded rear section of the workshop is distinguished by its enhanced spatial quality and natural light. A large window facing east provides abundant illumination. Like the terrace doors in the first section, the window frame is crafted from intricately designed ironwork in a vibrant red accent. This frame rotates on its axis with a weather vane mechanism, enabling cross-ventilation throughout the workshop. Additionally, this section features a distinct roofing system.Save this picture! The sawtooth roof design provides optimal lighting conditions for painting and exhibition, utilizing indirect sunlight to avoid glare or harsh shadows. Three overhead openings, also facing east, further enhance the diffusion of natural light. Throughout the upper floorencompassing the workshop, staircase, studio, hallway, and terracethe design team selected a garnet red for the ironwork accents. This vibrant color was chosen as the most representative and evocative of Daniela Riquelmes artistic work, which thrives under the eastern light pouring into this thoughtfully transformed second level in the heart of Coyoacn.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeAMASA EstudioOfficePublished on February 01, 2025Cite: "Daniela Riquelme Studio Workshop / AMASA Estudio" [Taller Estudio Daniela Riquelme / AMASA Estudio] 01 Feb 2025.
