• The Most Confusing Smartphone of 2025? Doogee S119 Slaps a Smartwatch on the Back
    www.yankodesign.com
Somewhere in a boardroom, a designer must have asked, What if we glued a smartwatch to the back of a phone? Instead of being laughed out of the room, they got a green light, and now we have the Doogee S119a rugged smartphone that wears its quirks like a badge of honor. Doogee isnt new to unconventional designs, but this one is a bold move, even for them. Rather than a secondary display integrated smoothly into the phones design, the S119 has an actual, physical smartwatch embedded into its back, proudly sticking out like a sci-fi parasite. Its part notification hub, part clock, and fully committed to making the camera bump situation worse. The $239 smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer poses a rather strange question do you just buy a smartwatch for that amount of money? Or buy a phone with a built-in smartwatch? No seriously, the S119 doesnt have a secondary display on the back it literally has a smartwatch protruding beyond the existing camera bump and a literal bezel around the display. I appreciate it when a smartphone company tries taking risks in todays fairly boring environment but its hard to tell innovation from satire with something like this. At least that second screen makes for a nice viewfinder when clicking photos??Designer: DoogeeBut lets not dismiss it outright. Theres a certain logic to it, if I could steel-man this argument for a second. A secondary display can be usefulfoldables use them to show notifications and time at a glance, so you dont have to open the main screen. But on a standard slab phone? The argument gets shakier. You still have to pick up the phone to check the time, which is objectively less convenient than, say, an actual smartwatch on your wrist. It also doesnt really cut down on screen time if youre still reaching for your device every few minutes. The concept isnt without merit, but its practicality feels questionable. That said, Doogee knows its audience. The S119 is built for people who like their phones rugged, functional, and a little bit over-the-top. Its MIL-STD-810H certified, meaning it can survive drops, extreme temperatures, and dust like a champ. The 6.58-inch FHD+ LCD display (120Hz refresh rate) offers solid visuals, while the Helio G99 processor and 12GB RAM (expandable to 20GB via virtual RAM) ensure it wont choke under pressure. With 256GB of storage (expandable via microSD), theres plenty of space for apps, media, and whatever else rugged-phone users hoard.Of course, no Doogee phone is complete without a monstrous battery, and the S119 delivers with a 10,800mAh unit. Thats the kind of endurance that makes power banks obsolete. It supports 33W fast charging, so you wont be stuck waiting an eternity when you do need to juice up. The 64MP Samsung ISOCELL main camera, 16MP front camera, and 24MP night vision lens cover the photography side, though image quality probably wont dethrone flagship competitors. This is a phone designed for durability first, photography second. Now, about that secondary display. Its a 1.3-inch circular LCD that mimics a smartwatch, showing time, notifications, fitness tracking data, and even music controls. Doogee claims it offers quick access to key information without unlocking the main screen, but again, youre still picking up the phone to check itsomething an actual smartwatch does better. Maybe it helps in situations where the phone is face-down, or perhaps its just another conversation starter for people who love unique tech. It could also be a makeshift selfie preview screen, but the placement makes that awkward. So, who is this for? The S119 is clearly targeting a nicheoutdoor adventurers, construction workers, or just anyone who wants a phone that can take a beating. Its IP68 and IP69K rated, meaning it shrugs off water and dust with ease. At 219 ($239), its not absurdly expensive for a rugged phone, especially with these specs. But the smartwatch-back gimmick feels like a solution in search of a problem. The post The Most Confusing Smartphone of 2025? Doogee S119 Slaps a Smartwatch on the Back first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • This Origami-esque Home Is Intended To Be A Habitable Power Station Topped With Solar Panels
    www.yankodesign.com
Called Copper Bottom and designed by Adrian James Architects, this two-story house is intended for studio founder Adrian James and his family. The self-build project consists of a green-patinated copper shell topped with solar panels, forming a habitable power station. Located in Oxford, on a sloped wildflower meadow on Harcourt Hill, the four-bedroom home showcases a cuboid form and a sculptural copper carapace that offers protection against the sun while minimizing energy demand. The home is designed with sustainability in mind.Designer: Adrian James ArchitectsThe starting points were a compact form, a roof maximizing southerly aspect for solar panels, and an envelope which sheltered the windows from high sun, said James. These primary moves established the basics, then it was a case of sculpting this basic form to create something uplifting and resonant. The ground floor houses a double-height gallery space, which serves as the heart of Copper Bottom. Alongside this space is an open-plan living and kitchen space with a mezzanine level intended for use as a home office. The upper story includes four bedrooms. One bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and an additional bathroom. What truly makes the house stand apart is its charming origamii-inspired shell. It includes an angled roof plan that cantilevers, offering protection against the summer heat while allowing the low winter rays to enter. The sides of the home hold space for creased bulges, which accommodate the east and west-facing windows. The top of the house includes two ears which serve as ventilation stacks that draw in the cool night air, and remove the hot air that gets collected through the day during summertime. There are subtle hints of something zoomorphic and something mechanistic, with paired ears and a prow, said James. It is really about capturing a sense of dynamism in the form which puts a spring in your step. The Copper Bottom House includes 37 photovoltaic panels which have been placed facing the sun. They create more energy than the house requires. This excessive energy makes the Copper Bottom a zero-carbon operation home, while also offsetting the energy linked with its construction. James says they wanted the house to be a habitable power station. As you enter the home, you are welcomed by a light and spacious space marked by white walls and minimal detailing. The space also includes a big feature wall made using textured stock brick. This wall also serves as a stairway to the mezzanine home office, which contains a wide oak desk and offers views of the garden and the surrounding landscape. The ground floor includes porcelain tiles on the floor, while the upper floor contains joinery and doors made from stained oak. Massive windows provide views of the rolling countryside and the spires of Oxford. The post This Origami-esque Home Is Intended To Be A Habitable Power Station Topped With Solar Panels first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Demons Souls Remake Isnt Coming to PC or Other Platforms Rumor
    gamingbolt.com
Gran Turismo 7 allegedly had a PC port in the works, though it was shelved at some unknown point. If that wasnt bad enough, Icon-Era founder Bryank75 also revealed that the Demons Souls remake wont be ported to PC or any other platform.Leaked via the forums members and admin, who have it on good authority, this could mean it never launches for PC, at least not in this generation. Could this mean Sony backing off on porting its titles to the PC market? Not quite. Bryank75 responded that PC plans still exist, but some of them suck ass. Make of that what you will, but you shouldnt expect Bluepoints remake anytime soon.Sonys success with its first-party PC ports has been mixed lately. Helldivers 2 and Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut proved successful, but Returnal, LEGO Horizon Adventures, and Concord were disappointing. Even Marvels Spider-Man 2 debuted to less than 19K players on Steam, though its since reached 27,775 concurrent. It removed the mandatory PSN requirement for many titles, at least. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is the next first-party PlayStation title for PC, launching on April 3rd. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months.

  • Creating a Medical Question-Answering Chatbot Using Open-Source BioMistral LLM, LangChain, Chromas Vector Storage, and RAG: A Step-by-Step Guide
    www.marktechpost.com
In this tutorial, well build a powerful, PDF-based question-answering chatbot tailored for medical or health-related content. Well leveRAGe the open-source BioMistral LLM and LangChains flexible data orchestration capabilities to process PDF documents into manageable text chunks. Well then encode these chunks using Hugging Face embeddings, capturing deep semantic relationships and storing them in a Chroma vector database for high-efficiency retrieval. Finally, by employing a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system, well integrate the retrieved context directly into our chatbots responses, ensuring clear, authoritative answers for users. This approach allows us to rapidly sift through large volumes of medical PDFs, providing context-rich, accurate, and easy-to-understand insights.Setting up toolsCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browser!pip install langchain sentence-transformers chromadb llama-cpp-python langchain_community pypdffrom langchain_community.document_loaders import PyPDFDirectoryLoaderfrom langchain.text_splitter import CharacterTextSplitter,RecursiveCharacterTextSplitterfrom langchain_community.embeddings import HuggingFaceEmbeddingsfrom langchain.vectorstores import FAISS, Chromafrom langchain_community.llms import LlamaCppfrom langchain.chains import RetrievalQA, LLMChainimport pathlibimport textwrapfrom IPython.display import displayfrom IPython.display import Markdowndef to_markdown(text): text = text.replace('', ' *') return Markdown(textwrap.indent(text, '> ', predicate=lambda _: True))from google.colab import drivedrive.mount('/content/drive')First, we install and configure Python packages for document processing, embedding generation, local LLMs, and advanced retrieval-based workflows with LlamaCpp. We leverage langchain_community for PDF loading and text splitting, set up RetrievalQA and LLMChain for question answering, and include a to_markdown utility plus Google Drive mounting.Setting up API key accessCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browserfrom google.colab import userdata# Or use `os.getenv('HUGGINGFACEHUB_API_TOKEN')` to fetch an environment variable.import osfrom getpass import getpassHF_API_KEY = userdata.get("HF_API_KEY")os.environ["HF_API_KEY"] = "HF_API_KEY"Here, we securely fetch and set the Hugging Face API key as an environment variable in Google Colab. It can also leverage the HUGGINGFACEHUB_API_TOKEN environment variable to avoid directly exposing sensitive credentials in your code.Loading and Extracting PDFs from a DirectoryCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browserloader = PyPDFDirectoryLoader('/content/drive/My Drive/Data')docs = loader.load()We use PyPDFDirectoryLoader to scan the specified folder for PDFs, extract their text into a document list, and lay the groundwork for tasks like question answering, summarization, or keyword extraction.Splitting Loaded Text Documents into Manageable ChunksCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browsertext_splitter = RecursiveCharacterTextSplitter(chunk_size=300, chunk_overlap=50)chunks = text_splitter.split_documents(docs)In this code snippet, RecursiveCharacterTextSplitter is applied to break down each document in docs into smaller, more manageable segments.Initializing Hugging Face EmbeddingsCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browserembeddings = HuggingFaceEmbeddings(model_name="BAAI/bge-base-en-v1.5")Using HuggingFaceEmbeddings, we create an object using the BAAI/bge-base-en-v1.5 model. It converts text into numerical vectors.Building a Vector Store and Running a Similarity SearchCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browservectorstore = Chroma.from_documents(chunks, embeddings)query = "who is at risk of heart disease"search = vectorstore.similarity_search(query)to_markdown(search[0].page_content)We first build a Chroma vector store (Chroma.from_documents) from the text chunks and the specified embedding model. Next, you create a query asking, who is at risk of heart disease, and perform a similarity search against the stored embeddings. The top result (search[0].page_content) is then converted to Markdown for clearer display.Creating a Retriever and Fetching Relevant DocumentsCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browserretriever = vectorstore.as_retriever( search_kwargs={'k': 5})retriever.get_relevant_documents(query)We convert the Chroma vector store into a retriever (vectorstore.as_retriever) that efficiently fetches the most relevant documents for a given query.Initializing BioMistral-7B Model with LlamaCppCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browserllm = LlamaCpp( model_path= "/content/drive/MyDrive/Model/BioMistral-7B.Q4_K_M.gguf", temperature=0.3, max_tokens=2048, top_p=1)We set up an open-source local BioMistral LLM using LlamaCpp, pointing to a pre-downloaded model file. We also configure generation parameters such as temperature, max_tokens, and top_p, which control randomness, the maximum tokens generated, and the nucleus sampling strategy.Setting Up a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Chain with a Custom PromptCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browserfrom langchain.schema.runnable import RunnablePassthroughfrom langchain.schema.output_parser import StrOutputParserfrom langchain.prompts import ChatPromptTemplatetemplate = """<|context|>You are an AI assistant that follows instruction extremely well. Please be truthful and give direct answers</s><|user|>{query}</s> <|assistant|>"""prompt = ChatPromptTemplate.from_template(template)rag_chain = ( {'context': retriever, 'query': RunnablePassthrough()} | prompt | llm | StrOutputParser())Using the above, we set up an RAG pipeline using the LangChain framework. It creates a custom prompt with instructions and placeholders, incorporates a retriever for context, and leverages a language model for generating answers. The flow is defined as a series of operations (RunnablePassthrough for direct query handling, the ChatPromptTemplate for prompt construction, the LLM for response generation, and finally, the StrOutputParser to produce a clean text string).Invoking the RAG Chain to Answer a Health-Related QueryCopy CodeCopiedUse a different Browserresponse = rag_chain.invoke("Why should I care about my heart health?")to_markdown(response)Now, we call the previously constructed RAG chain with a users query. It passes the query to the retriever, retrieves relevant context from the document collection, and feeds that context into the LLM to generate a concise, accurate answer. In conclusion, by integrating BioMistral via LlamaCpp and taking advantage of LangChains flexibility, we are able to build a medical-RAG chatbot with context awareness. From chunk-based indexing to seamless RAG pipelines, it streamlines the process of mining large volumes of PDF data for relevant insights. Users receive clear and easily readable answers by formatting final responses in Markdown. This design can be extended or tailored for various domains, ensuring scalability and precision in knowledge retrieval across diverse documents.Use the Colab Notebook here.
