OpenAI announced on X that its hosting a livestream from Tokyo tonight, offering no more context beyond, Deep Research. (Didn't Google already take that name for Gemini?) Theres no link yet, just a note to stay tuned. The stream is scheduled for 7PM ET (4PM PT/ 9AM JST).Deep ResearchLive from Tokyo4pm PT / 9am JSTStay tuned for link to livestream. OpenAI (@OpenAI) February 2, 2025 Just a few days ago, OpenAI released its new reasoning model, o3-mini. The company says it produces more accurate and clearer answers, with stronger reasoning abilities than its predecessor, and works with search to find up-to-date answers with links to relevant web sources. CEO Sam Altman and other members of the OpenAI team just held an AMA on Reddit on Friday to discuss the new model. And a week before that, OpenAI introduced its new Operator tool, a Computer-Using Agent that it said can go to the web to perform tasks for you.At the same time, we've seen the sudden rise of DeepSeek, the Chinese AI assistant app that was released at the end of January and spiked in popularity on app stores last week. Following all the initial hype, a report from the Wall Street Journal said OpenAI is investigating whether its models were used to train DeepSeek. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/openai-announces-surprise-deep-research-stream-tonight-220708906.html?src=rss

  • This Designer Transforms Rough Sketches Into Actual Furniture Quite Literally!
    www.yankodesign.com
Imagine a chair that looks like a rough doodle from an artists notebook chaotic, spontaneous, and utterly impossible to sit on. Now, imagine that same sketch materializing into reality, standing before you as a fully functional piece of furniture. Thats exactly what South Korean designer Jinil Park has achieved with his groundbreaking Drawing Series.Designer:Jinil ParkWhat sets the Drawing Series apart is its visual deception, each piece appears as if it were hastily drawn on paper, yet it exists as a tangible, three-dimensional object. Parks design philosophy revolves around the distortion of lines, which he believes conveys the designers emotions, state of mind, and artistic expression.Park explored new design possibilities by drawing lines freely and discovering intriguing and enjoyable aspects in the strokes on paper. The results of these strokes led to the development of visually compelling objects. His furniture pieces are not just functional, they serve as statement pieces that can become the focal point of any room. Alternatively, their whimsical, sketch-like nature allows them to blend seamlessly into spaces designed for children, fostering creativity and playfulness in their environment. To bring his sketches to life, Park carefully selected drawings that could be feasibly transformed into stable furniture pieces. He then used steel wires of varying thicknesses, hammering them to create the illusion of pen strokes. By intersecting and welding these wires together, he achieved structural integrity while maintaining the sketch-like aesthetic. The use of different wire thicknesses was crucial in mimicking the irregularity and spontaneity of hand-drawn lines. This labor-intensive process ensured that the final pieces preserved the essence of the original sketches while also being functional.Although each piece appears fragile and ephemeral, the strategic welding of the wires enables them to support human weight. The chairs, table, and lamps all possess an unexpected sturdiness despite their seemingly delicate form. This interplay between fragility and strength showcases Parks deep understanding of both art and engineering. The Drawing Series was exhibited at many design festivals where it captivated audiences with its unique fusion of art and functionality. The collection challenges traditional perceptions of furniture by blurring the line between two-dimensional sketches and three-dimensional reality. One of the most exciting aspects of the Drawing Series is its adaptability in terms of color. While the original designs focus on the raw steel wire aesthetic, these pieces can easily be made in various color options, allowing them to fit into different interior styles. Whether in bold hues for a striking statement or soft pastels for a subtle artistic touch, the customization possibilities make this collection even more versatile. The post This Designer Transforms Rough Sketches Into Actual Furniture Quite Literally! first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • LEGOs Monty Python Build Lets You Recreate the Silliest Walk in History
    www.yankodesign.com
Somewhere in the depths of the British Civil Service, nestled between the Department of Redundancy Department and the Bureau of Silly Names, there exists a place of utmost national importance: The Ministry of Silly Walks. Thanks to LEGO Ideas, this hallowed institution of absurd locomotion has been immortalized in brick form, ensuring future generations can practice their own bureaucratically approved gait modificationspreferably while wearing a bowler hat and carrying an umbrella. This build captures John Cleeses Mr. Teabag in all his gangly, knee-flinging glory. The exaggerated proportions are perfect for recreating his impossibly precise movements, with carefully placed Technic joints allowing for a full range of silliness. Whether youre attempting an elegant forward aerial half-turn every alternate step or simply struggling with the physical limitations of human anatomy, this set delivers. The silhouette is instantly recognizable, and the deadpan seriousness of Mr. Teabags face is sculpted with an attention to detail usually reserved for medieval cathedrals or large-scale statues of minor Eastern European poets.Designer: PackatrixA deviation from most static LEGO sets, this one comes with a fully positionable design, allowing you to make Mr. Cleese walk in a variety of silly styles. LEGOs usual dedication to stability means that even the most outrageously extended limb maintains structural integritya crucial element when defying both gravity and common sense. The umbrella can be anchored for extra support, preventing catastrophic workplace accidents that could result in additional funding cuts for the Ministry. The legs, engineered with ratcheted connections, maintain their dramatic angles without collapsing, allowing you to fine-tune your walk into something truly worthy of a government grant. Its hard to overstate the cultural weight of this particular Monty Python sketch. Among the Pythons many absurd masterpieces, The Ministry of Silly Walks is one of the most enduring, right up there with the Dead Parrot sketch and the Spanish Inquisition (which, as we all know, no one expects). Cleeses performance is a masterclass in controlled absurdity, taking the inherently ridiculous concept of an underfunded ministry dedicated to outlandish gaits and delivering it with complete bureaucratic sincerity. This LEGO build taps into that same comedic balance, treating the outlandish with an almost reverent level of craftsmanship. The Ministry of Silly Walks may have never received the government funding it deserved, but in brick form, it has found a permanent place in history. And lets be honestwhat better way to honor one of the greatest comedy sketches of all time than by making it impossible to take a serious step past your LEGO shelf without launching into an exaggerated, knee-thrusting march? This LEGO Ideas build, along with many others, sits in the hallowed Staff Picks category on the website. With over 3000 supporters, its walking (in its signature silly style) slowly but surely towards the 10,000 vote mark. Once it crosses that milestone, LEGOs internal team will review the submission, considering it for a manufacturing run so we all can own a retail set of one of the funniest comedy sketches of all time! Go ahead and vote for this LEGO MOC (My Own Creation) on the LEGO Ideas website here. The post LEGOs Monty Python Build Lets You Recreate the Silliest Walk in History first appeared on Yanko Design.

    gamingbolt.com
Following its big reveal at The Game Awards 2024, Gearboxs Borderlands 4 is gearing up to showcase more gameplay early this year. While several elements like cross-play and two-player split-screen co-op are confirmed, senior project producer Anthony Nicholson also assured that there will be guns. Lots of guns. Billions, even.Nicholson told GamesRadar for its Borderlands 4 preview that the team is always adding more guns, manufacturers, legendary weapons and opportunities for customization and player expression. As a result, players can look forward to billions of weapons and accessories in the sequel, which may cause long-time fans to groan at the potential junk to sift through. However, when asked if the rarity system will receive updates, he added that Gearbox wants to create exciting moments when a rare weapon, item, or something altogether unexpected drops. This doesnt mean you wont trash a good chunk of your drops, but at least you can look forward to them more.Borderlands 4 is out later this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Though 2K hasnt narrowed a release window, its definitely not launching anywhere close to Grand Theft Auto 6, which releases this Fall.

  • ChatGPTs agent can now do deep research for you
    www.theverge.com
OpenAI has revealed another new agentic feature for ChatGPT called deep research, which it says can operate autonomously to plan and execute a multi-step trajectory to find the data it needs, backtracking and reacting to real-time information where necessary.Instead of simply generating text, it shows a summary of its process in a sidebar, with citations and a summary showing the process used for reference.Image: OpenAIUsers can ask questions using text, images, and additional files like PDFs or spreadsheets to add context, and then it will take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to develop a response provided in the chat window, with promises that in the future it will also be able to include embedded images and charts. OpenAI also notes limitations for deep research, saying it can sometimes hallucinate and make up facts, struggle with telling the difference between authoritative info and rumors, and register how certain it should rate a response.ChatGPT deep research exampleDeveloping ways for generative AI tools to be more useful and worth paying for is the future companies like OpenAI have promised for agents, and it claims that deep research is capable of operating at the level of a research analyst. The demo video included here begins with a request for info on changes in the retail industry over the last three years, with a response that includes bullet points and tables. This feature closely follows OpenAIs launch of Operator, a tool that can use a web browser to complete tasks for you, and is similar to the Project Mariner research prototype Google showed off in December. Googles tool is not available to the public yet, but deep research is launching with a version optimized for Pro users today.OpenAI is offering up to 100 queries per month for those paying the $200 monthly fee and limited access promised for Plus, Team, and eventually, Enterprise users, calling the ability very compute intensive, requiring more inference compute the longer it takes to research something. It also says that all paid users will get higher rate limits in the future when a faster, more cost-effective version is available. In a press release, it says that the model powering deep research scored a new high for accuracy on an AI benchmark dubbed Humanitys Last Exam, which asks for responses to expert-level questions. The OpenAI deep research model reached an accuracy of 25.3 percent, well above GPT-4os 3.3 percent, and the next highest scorer, its o3-mini (high) model at 13 percent.See More:
