  • The Coalition For Student Wellbeing: Bridging Gaps In Mental Health
    www.forbes.com
A student raising his hand to ask a question.gettyIts widely accepted that students are the most important stakeholders in higher education. As a 2024 report on HelpfulProfessor.com argued, students are the vested group that are doing the learning. College students are also the stakeholders who are generally paying to be on campus, often live on campus, and are affected by policies and laws about higher education. Despite the status of being the most important campus stakeholder, there are often gaps between college students and decision-makers, such as university administrators and politicians. Many college students might not know how to engage administrators and politicians, and many decision-makers want more productive conversations with students. To bridge this gap for issues related to campus mental health, a group of students from over 50 colleges and universities, in 18 different states, have coordinated to form The Coalition for Student Wellbeing (C4SW).What Is The Coalition For Student Wellbeing? The C4SW is an organization made up of students and advisory board members and is dedicated to bridge the gap between students and decision-makers through advocacy, collaboration, and education. Carson Domey is an undergraduate student at the University of Texas at Austin and serves as the Executive Director. When asked how the C4SW came about, Carson Domey replied, Following the passing of a close friend to suicide in 2018, I became determined to advocate for policies that expand access to mental health care, education, and resources I founded the Coalition for Student Wellbeing because I was inspired by the equal dedication of students and college presidents alike to create a healthier future for students. Carson stated that one of his motivations is to ease the difficulties that non-profits, government agencies, and decision-makers face while attempting to engage students and young people at the regional and national levels.According to Carson Domey, students involved in the C4SW are either part of the Council on Student Wellbeing, consisting of a smaller number of highly engaged students, or part of the grassroots coalition, consisting of a larger number of students who participate in activities such as roundtables to share their unique perspective. Carson explained that the C4SW also has an advisor board consisting of university administrators, health industry leaders, state officials, and staff members of non-profit organizations. What Initiatives Have The Coalition For Student Wellbeing Participated In?Carson Domey reported that during the Fall of 2024, students in the C4SW traveled to the White House to participate in a roundtable discussion on youth mental health, with a focus on increasing awareness of mental health resources, such as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Carson Domey stated that the C4SW is currently developing a resource toolkit to empower students to advocate for having 988 added to their student identification cards. He said the C4SW also hopes to create a distributable guide for parents and students to address the topic of mental health care when students move away from home to start college. What Are Students In The Coalition for Student Wellbeing Saying About Campus Mental Health?Audrey Schlotter is a C4SW council member and a fourth-year student at Oregon State University, studying Public Policy. Audrey stated, The reality of college life today is drastically different from the experiences of those making decisions about funding and university priorities. Most administrators Ive worked with, both at Oregon State University and Spokane Community College, care deeply about students, their mental health, and their ability to succeed. However, many of them havent been students for decades, and the challenges we face today are often unrecognizable to them"MORE FOR YOUShriya Garg is also a C4SW council member and a second-year student at the University of Georgia studying Molecular Biology and Chemistry. Shriya commented about the need for peer support programs, By recognizing that youth themselves have an unparalleled understanding of what it's like to face mental health struggles, the Coalition for Student Wellbeing has adopted a peer-peer support model to their youth advocacy Furthermore, by collaborating with leaders at mental health organizations, the Coalition for Student Wellbeing has taken strides to raise the student voice front and center. By doing so, the Coalition and its students take a novel approach to social change.Carson Domey encouraged all stakeholders to come together about campus mental health. He stated, The coalition is always looking to connect with people in the student mental health space, and we encourage folks to reach out to us!

  • Claressa Shields Vs. Danielle Perkins: Results, Scorecard, Highlights
    www.forbes.com
Shields vs. PerkinsCredit: DAZNOn Sunday, Claressa Shields did what most expected. In her hometown of Flint, Michigan, Shields became the first-ever undisputed womens heavyweight champion with a unanimous decision victory over Danielle Perkins (100-89, 97-92, 99-90).Danielle Perkins gave a spirited effort, but she was outclassed in terms of speed and pure boxing acumen. Shields nearly scored a knockdown in the third round, but Perkins managed to remain on her feet. However, in the tenth and final round, Shields scored an explosive knockdown with a wicked right hand in the final seconds of the fight. Here is a look at the absolutely beautiful counter right hand.Perkins made it to her feet, but if there had been 30 more seconds left in the fight, Shields probably would have gotten the finish. Here is a look at some of the reactions from notables in the boxing community.MORE FOR YOUMy Biggest Takeaways from Shields Win:We need to stop limiting womens professional boxing matches to two minutes. Its a pretty ridiculous differentiation that lessens the overall product.Womens championship fights should be 12 rounds as well for the same reason.Womens boxing in higher weight classes needs to become a thing. Shields is the kind of star who can make it happen. I love the idea of embracing female athletes of all frames.Shields called out her friend Franchon Crews-Dezurn, Savannah Marshall, Laila Ali, and Cris Cyborg. Its clear she has her eye on making the biggest fights possible. As she gets set to turn 30 in March, its a smart approach for this stage of her career. The atmosphere in Flint was special. If you understand the city and the culture, you could feel it through the broadcast. The music played in the venue and the crowds reaction to multiple moments helped make this an entertaining watch.Shields is truly one of the most impressive female athletes of our time. Her ability to maintain speed, dexterity, and agility across multiple weight classes is remarkable. Shes also trained and competed professionally in mixed martial arts. While some will argue she already gets her flowers, something tells me shell be more appreciated once shes done fighting and the ones she has inspired are following in her footsteps.Whats Next in Boxing?Saturday, February 8, 2025Dereck Chisora vs. Otto WallinLocation: Co-Op Live Arena, Manchester, GBTime: 2:00 PM (ET)Friday, February 14, 2025WBO World Lightweight Championship: (c) Denys Berinchyk vs. Keyshawn DavisXander Zayas vs. Slawa SpomerVito Mielnicki vs. Connor CoyleJared Anderson vs. Marios KolliasAbdullah Mason vs. Manuel JaimesLocation: The Theater at MSG, New York City, USTime: 8:00 PM (ET)Saturday, February 15, 2025Jack Catterall vs. Arnold BarbozaLocation: Co-Op Live Arena, Manchester, GBTime: Noon (ET)Oscar Duarte vs. Regis PrograisHonda Center, Anaheim, California, USTime: 8 PM (ET)Saturday, February 22, 2025The Ring, WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF Light Heavyweight Championship: (c) Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry BivolIBF Heavyweight Championship: (c) Daniel Dubois vs. Joseph ParkerWBC Lightweight Championship (c) Shakur Stevenson vs. Floyd SchofieldWBC Middleweight Championship (c) Carlos Adames vs. Hamzah SheerazVergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Israil MadrimovJoshua Buatsi vs. Callum SmithZhilei Zhang vs. Agit KabayelLocation: Kingdom Arena, Riyadh, SATime: Noon (ET)Monday, February 24, 2025WBC World Bantamweight Championship: (c) Junto Nakatani vs. David Cuellar ContrerasLocation: Ariake Arena, Tokyo, JPTime: 2:00 AM (ET)Saturday, March 1, 2025WBA World Lightweight Championship: (c) Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr.Location: Barclays Center, New York City, USTime: 8:00 PM (ET)Friday, March 7, 2025The Ring Welterweight Championship: (c) Natasha Jonas vs. Lauren PriceLocation: Royal Albert Hall, London, GBTime: 1:00 PM (ET)Saturday, March 15, 2025WBA World Featherweight Championship: (c) Nick Ball vs. TJ DohenyLocation: M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool, GBTime: 1:00 PM (ET)Sunday, March 16, 2025Callum Walsh vs. Dean SutherlandLocation: The Theater at MSG, New York City, USTime: 9:00 PM (ET)

She received her first nomination in 1991 for her self-titled LP but lost to Quincy Jones. She was later nominated for "Daydream" in 1996 and "The Emancipation of Mimi" in 2006, but lost to Alanis Morissette and U2, respectively.Drake is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, but he has yet to win album of the year.Drake performs in Atlanta in 2022. They lost to "25" by Adele and "Golden Hour" by Kacey Musgraves, respectively.Although Drake has criticized the ceremony's relevance both onstage and on social media he resumed submitting his music for consideration with the 2022 album "Her Loss," which received four nods, but only in rap categories.Jay-Z has been nominated only once. The site is surrounded by high-rise condominiums, a national highway, and an expressway, but the road to the east is an important local street that connects the Shin-Itabashi subway station and JR Itabashi station, constantly crowded with people day and night. The east side of the building was considered an interface with the city, where the activity inside would subtly spill out, adding liveliness to the cityscape. At the foot of the building, the focus was to create a community promenade by improving the quality of the street space.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!A series of stepped, sloped roofs -The building's characteristic stepped appearance is a direct visualization of the atrium spaces above the stairs that connect the offices from the third to sixth floors while keeping with the height restrictions. The exterior is composed of polished precast concrete (PC) slabs, aluminum cut panels, extruded cement slabs, and aluminum sashes, carefully designed so that the shift in materials happens at the joints. The entrance space is surrounded by a row of solid polished prestressed concrete columns, creating a soft boundary with the city while integrating the outside space. The light and shadow pattern created by the colonnade in the morning colors the beginning of the day, and at dusk, the soft light enriches the expression of the city. On the upper floors, the colonnade contains a staircase-like diagonal atrium space, creating a workspace where people can move, and the wind can blow through.Save this picture!Save this picture!A comfortable workplace -In contrast to the stoic, minimalist exterior that embodies the client company's cutting-edge technology, the interior space focuses on worker comfort. We proposed a work style in which workers can freely choose between two zones: an open "white" workplace with high ceilings and a "wooden" zone with low ceilings and a calm atmosphere. The "white" zone is a space that makes the most of the 4-meter floor height by exposing the building frame. The simple ceiling, consisting of steel beams set at 3,600 mm pitch, painted with white fireproof paint and finished with a white deck, was designed as an abstract light-reflecting surface. Visible equipment was minimized, with the aim of creating a calm and focused space where people can feel only indirect, soft light. No light sources penetrate the eye, and no reflections can be seen on computer screens. Conditioned air and naturally ventilated outside airflow along the ceiling surface create a comfortable environment without being perceptible. This was realized based on a repetition of environmental simulations at the planning stage, careful fine-tuning on-site, and further adjustments based on post-completion measurements.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The "wood" zone, on the other hand, is a communication-oriented space with a low ceiling height, designed to create a human-scale space with a low center of gravity. The furniture layout and lighting arrangement can be easily and freely changed. The diagonal atrium and staircase connect the 3rd, 4th, and 5th office floors with the showroom/hall on the 6th floor and are intended to activate communication between the floors. Natural ventilation and lighting allow winds to flow through and natural light to flood the space so that workers can feel the passing time and atmosphere of the city while they work.Save this picture! We hope that the "white" and "wooden" zones will reflect the diverse work styles of the client's various departments and individuals and stimulate their daily activities.Save this picture!Environmental variability creates a casual ZEB office -A diversity of interior environments was achieved by creatively combining inexpensive, general-purpose technologies and natural elements. With activity-based working gaining popularity, the variable indoor environment was accepted as an attractive feature that improves comfort, health, and energy conservation. The actual energy performance value is 61% above standard, achieving "ZEB ready" operational performance.Save this picture!Save this picture!A draft-free, glare-free workplace -The air conditioning system is a one-way ductless system using the Coanda effect and floor suction, and the plan allows switching between radiant and convection modes at every 10.8 m span. A high-ceiling space with no vertical temperature difference and no draft was realized to improve ventilation efficiency and reduce the risk of airborne virus transmission. Natural ventilation was introduced by using the vaulted space as a gravity ventilation pathway, and natural resources were actively incorporated through features like natural top lights and rainwater utilization.A bright and glare-free environment was achieved through the exclusive use of indirect lighting in the form of beams. Power consumption of 6.5 W/m2 is achieved while maintaining an illuminance of 600 lx on the desk surface, and energy is saved by controlled daylight usage.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeNikken SekkeiOfficePublished on February 03, 2025Cite: "ISHIDA TOKYO Regional Headquarters / Nikken Sekkei" 03 Feb 2025. • Last Month Unexpectedly Finished as the Warmest January on Record
    www.discovermagazine.com
After burning for 24 days, the deadly Palisades Fire in the Los Angeles area finally was declared 100 percent contained on Jan. 31, 2025. Two days later, an analysis found last month to be the warmest January on record globally. Scientists believe climate change had raised wildfire risks in Southern California prior to the blaze. In the false-color satellite view above, scorched areas are depicted in tones of orange and red. (Credit: Modified Copernicus Sentinel data processed by Tom Yulsman)NewsletterSign up for our email newsletter for the latest science newsJanuary wasn't supposed to be a record-setter.Last month was expected to continue a fall out of record high global heating conditions that began last September. But that's not how things turned out. According to the first of several analyses coming in the next couple of weeks, last month was the warmest January on record. The first three weeks of the year saw particularly high global temperatures, according to climate scientist Zeke Hausfather, writing in his newsletter The Climate Brink. Then, with a few days left in the month, temperatures finally fell out of record territory. But by then the die was cast. January 2025 finished considerably warmer overall than January 2024, the previous record-holder. Back then, global temperatures seemed shockingly warm. But at least we could place some of the blame on El Nio, a climate phenomenon that tends to warm things up. Its influence also was in place during other record-setting Januaries: 2007, 2016 and 2020. But we don't have El Nio to kick around anymore. It actually dissipated months ago. Adding to the puzzle is the fact that we're in the midst of a La Nia, which typically cools things down. All things being equal, this should have resulted in lower global temperatures, says Hausfather, Senior Fellow at the Breakthrough Institute. But this past January, things apparently weren't equal. Why? That remains unclear."Global temperature over the past few months have exceeded, or been at the upper end, of what weve seen after any other El Nio event in the historical record," Hausfather writes. But Hold on, What About That Wicked Cold Snap?If you live in Canada or the lower 48 states of the United States, you might be wondering how this could possibly be true given the brutal Arctic blast that overtook most of North America on January 20 and 21. I shivered through it, and tens of millions of other people did as well. But If you live in Alaska, January's record warmth might make perfect sense given the unusually high temperatures there during the same period. In fact, most of the rest of the world was anomalously warm even as the blast of cold Arctic air descended on much of the U.S. and Canada. So please remember this: weather climate. Weather is about atmospheric conditions over the short run and at a specific time and place. And climate is about how weather adds up over a longer period and over broad geographical areas. What to expect moving forward? Weather models predict sharp cooling in the Northern Hemisphere in the short term. This lowers the odds that February will also set a new monthly global heating record, according to Hausfather. "But an unexpected record to start things off may presage higher temperatures this year than many of us thought."

Congratulations to /u/DevourerOfWasps for wining January's contest with their notebook design. You can see last month's results here. Theme This month's theme will be musical instruments. Like Blender, they're tools for artistic expression. Perhaps you'll make something high-energy and eye-catching, like a pair of bouncing bongos, or a groovy guitar. But you could also make something more relaxed such as a music class's storage room, or a musician's workspace. Show your appreciation for a musician's principle tools in this month's contest. A generous local user has offered up their RTX 3090. The card is fully functional and in good shape. The card is currently housed inside of a Razer Core X external GPU enclosure. With a Thunderbolt 3 port, this enclosure permits the card to be used as an external rendering device. This enclosure supports three DisplayPort connections and one HDMI connection. The enclosure is in good condition, with only minor scuffs. The 1st place winner will be awarded this RTX 3090 and the accompanying enclosure.
