• Random: Ex-PlayStation Boss Wanted More "Surprises" From Switch 2 Reveal
    www.nintendolife.com
The Switch 2 has been a major talking point for the entire games industry in 2025, and it's even got current and former executives of certain other video game companies sharing their thoughts. Now, the former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has discussed Nintendo's official announcement during an interview with the YouTube channel MinnMax - admitting how surprised he was by the lack of surprises while also acknowledging how leaks can impact reveals. Here's what he had to say:Shuhei Yoshida: "I thought the Switch 2 announcement could have been a larger reveal, it turned out to be kind of [a] sneak reveal or just a confirmation... 'this is Switch 2' and I am surprised there are not many surprises.""...a leak is very disappointing right, even if it's for other companies you know, I feel very sorry, you know when that happens - and you know, as a person, I like to be surprised."What did surprise Yoshida was the Joy-Con's mouse-like feature, which he thinks could pair up with games like Call of Duty now that the series has announced its return to Nintendo platforms. He also hopes Nintendo has something else up its sleeve for the April Direct:"The only surprise to me was that mice thing that they showed...I thought because the Switch 2 is more powerful and Call of Duty is coming, so people might want to play FPS with mice, but hopefully, because it's Nintendo they use it in some more you know...amazing way, something that people wouldn't anticipate."So I hope the next show, the beginning of April one, they will reveal something that's still hidden to us about Switch 2."Nintendo is yet to officially confirm Switch 2 Joy-Con doubling as a mouse, although it does seem like there's an optical sensor built into the new controllers. The Switch 2 Direct broadcast will air on 2nd April 2025. Yoshida's comments follow former PlayStation exec Shawn Layden sharing his thoughts about the Switch 2 reveal and the new device's name. • Accel backs Indian AI startup building ChatGPT for presentations
    techcrunch.com
Presentations.ai, an Indian startup that uses AI to help companies quickly generate presentation decks, has raised $3 million in a seed round led by Accel to scale its software that has emerged from beta after amassing millions of users.Presentations are ubiquitous throughout a business journey whether a large corporation or a startup to acquire new customers, update investors, and communicate milestones internally. Yet, businesses still struggle, spending hours cracking compelling presentations, which is even more critical when targeting clients or investors.People struggle to take the first draft of a presentation, said Sumanth Raghavendra, co-founder and CEO of Presenations.ai, in an exclusive interview. The Bengaluru-based startup has made that easier with its AI-powered platform, used by over 5 million people worldwide since its public beta launch in 2023, according to the company. We want to be the ChatGPT for presentation. Think about making a presentation using AI, using that same construct that ChatGPT operates under, Raghavendra told TechCrunch.Presentations.ai team, with Sumanth Raghavendra on the far right in the second row (in a green shirt)Image Credits:Presentations.aiFounded in 2019, Presentations.ai saw ChatGPTs emergence in late 2022 as the moment to come out of stealth and start onboarding new users. The startup amassed a million users within three months of its public beta and is currently making millions of dollars in profit, Raghavendra said. Before Presentations.ai, Raghvendra founded Deck App Technologies, which developed an app to help people create business content using smartphones. However, he noted that the earlier venture had a limited degree of success as mobile devices did not become an instrument to create content other than videos.Over the years, Raghvendra said that his team had created IPs around building presentations that helped Presentations.ai to emerge as a competitive player even in the crowded space where both startups and even big tech companies like Google and Microsoft are trying to ease presentation-building using generative AI.Because we have been doing this for so many years, Im fairly confident that we are far ahead of anybody else, and the proof of the pudding for us is that a lot of users who come in pay us to use our software. They have typically tried other competitors, including whatever Google or Microsoft has, Raghvendra asserted. After gaining initial traction, the startup transitioned from a completely free experience for beta testers into a freemium offering in early 2024. Since then, Raghvendra told TechCrunch it has tens of thousands of paying users who pay for its service, starting at an annual price of $200 per user in the U.S., with different tiers and localized pricing across markets. The startup utilizes frontier LLMs along with its own small language models created for specific tasks, such as deciding which chart best fits a particular topic. It also uses text-to-image models Flux and Stable Diffusion to help users quickly generate images to be used in the presentations with prompts.Presentations.ai provides tools including theme palettes and presentation styles to generate decks based on user preferences. It also offers features including an AI-powered design assistant to create presentations based on different ideas, sharing and real-time sync, and multilingual support.Similarly, the startup provides brand templates to match the style of users particular brands. It also lets people export their presentations to a PowerPoint file for further editing or as a PDF.Presentations.ai specifically includes guardrails to assure enterprise customers it has a high bar against the competition. These guardrails, Raghvendra said, are built using the data pipelines the startup has built over time to restrict hallucination, the colloquial term of AI-generated inaccurate or misleading content. The platform also lets enterprises restrict access to sensitive data they do not want to be shared with other users, such as the financial information with the CFO that the front-line staff should not access. The startup also allows hosting a private instance of the software. Additionally, it provides organization-wide licenses to let employees collaborate on a particular presentation.Raghvendra told TechCrunch the startup plans to use the seed funding to launch a dedicated presentation agent to create presentations within any application. It also plans to have an enterprise sales team.So far, Raghvendra said the startup has spent zero on its marketing. Also, since it owns IPs, the executive said its AI patent costs are relatively lower and have higher profitability margins than other startups enabling presentations using AI.The startup gets 20% of its revenues from the U.S. followed by India. It also counts the U.K., Germany, Australia, Canada, and the Middle East among its key markets. The seed round included participation from learned Indian entrepreneurs including Paytms Vijay Shekhar Sharma, CREDs Kunal Shah, Freshworks founder Girish Mathrubhootham, and RedBus Phanindra Sama, among others.

  • Adam Candeub, a vocal critic of Big Tech, will reportedly join the FCC
    techcrunch.com
Adam Candeub, a known critic of Big Tech, looks poised to join the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).Candeub will be general counsel of the FCC, reports Semafor, which cites direct confirmation from FCC chairman Brendan Carr. TechCrunch has reached out to the FCC for more information.Candeub has long been a vocal critic of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Section 230 protects tech companies and online service providers from prosecution based on what their users post on their platforms. The argument against repealing Section 230 is that tech entities, including social media companies, would become liable for what is posted on their platforms, which could lead to censorship. In 2020, Candeub was one of the lead writers of an administrative petition that asked the FCC to get involved with the ongoing debates around social media content moderation. The debates were sparked after Donald Trump accused social media sites of censoring conservative voices after companies like X Twitter at the time moderated his inaccurate claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election. That attempt to curb Section 230s power wasnt successful. More recent challenges have also failed. In 2023, the Supreme Court took Google and Twitters respective sides in adjacent cases that tried to hold the platforms accountable for allowing content from the Islamic State that promoted the terrorist organization. The conversation around Section 230 was already likely to come up during this administration again. Candeub joins the FCC alongside recently appointed chairman Carr, who has already been vocal about hoping for changes to Section 230 during this administration.Candeub previously served as an advisor to the FCC in the early 2000s. He joined the Trump Administration in 2019 as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Telecommunications and Information and also assumed the role of Acting Assistant Secretary. He joined the Department of Justice as Deputy Associate Attorney General in the waning weeks of Trumps presidency in late 2020. Candeub is currently a law professor at Michigan State University; he first joined its law faculty back in 2004.

  • Its a Ho Ho Whodunnit for Hallmark+s Mistletoe Murders VFX
    www.awn.com
VFX supervisor Aaron Wright just shared the work of his Blue Rain Productions team on the new Hallmark+ series, Mistletoe Murders, Hallmarks first holiday murder mystery, which debuted on the new streaming service this past October 31st.In the all-new Hallmark+ original series, based on the Audible original audiobook series of the same name, Emily Lane is an outwardly friendly, optimistic shop owner of a charming year-round Christmas-themed store, Under the Mistletoe. With a keen eye for details, Emily soon finds herself compelled to investigate not-so-quaint local murders, where her sleuthing skills are soon put to the test. Despite local cop, Detective Sam Wilner's growing affection for her, Emily's enigmatic past raises suspicions about her true motives because she has a big secret. Which certainly shows that everyone has ghosts of Christmas past! Yep, we said it.Created by Ken Cuperus, the show stars Sarah Drew (Greys Anatomy) as Emily Lane, Peter Mooney (Rookie Blue) as local detective Sam Wilner and Sierra Marilyn Riley as his teenaged daughter Violet. Jean Yoon (Kims Convenience), Lara Amersey (Operation Nutcracker), and Good Witch alum Kylee Evans also star. David Hewlett (The Shape of Water) has a recurring role; Tom Cavanaugh (Ed, The Flash) guest stars. Grant Harvey, Melanie Orr and Sherry White each directed two of the six Season 1 episodes.Wright and the Blue Rain Productions team worked on various VFX for the show, including replacing monitors to ensure that the on-screen actions matched the actors' movements. In one scene, they enhanced a tree to make it look more damaged as part of a murder investigation. Their work also involved enhancing clues and making minor production fixes, such as replacing unapproved photos. Additionally, they handled a significant explosion shot and flashback sequences to portray the character's past as a secret agent. The team was on set throughout the production, working to seamlessly blend elements they created, such as hospital interiors, with stock footage, integrating the material into the shows world of Fletchers Grove. The biggest challenge, and largest effect taken on by Wright and the team, was working on a big warehouse explosion. In describing the work, Wright shares that he came onto the show early, helping develop some of the action. MistletoeMurders presented us with the unique opportunityof a murder or 2 every couple episodes, he notes. Right from the get-go we were interested. Blue Rain was given the opportunity to help plan and design from the writing stage some of the murders and accidents you see on screen. This unique opportunity gave us freedom to design the effects in the most exciting but also efficient ways. He goes on to describe how a sleigh falling off the roof onto one of the carolers was a big opening shot for the 3rd episode that required us to build and design the rickety platform that was to be sabotaged. Wright went back and forth early with the art department to design a sleigh that was both simple to build and would break in real life, that could be used in the shot, but also would work for our needs, which were to break and fall from the rooftop. This collaboration meant the shots traveled smoothly through the production pipeline. For a large number of shots that involved outfitting a local shop with a big, bright sign saying, Famous Ray's Furniture Emporium, Wright explains, the choice to do it with VFX was clear. Because Ray's personality on the series was quite eccentric, It needed to be huge, he adds. Taking the initial artwork that the art department provided, we added the layers of grime and wear to it to have it tell a bit more of a story, then composited it into the different shots. Overall, I think the effect was quite successful. The climax of Emily's trauma induced flashback was a great warehouse explosion, one of the big cliffhangers from Emily's past, which begged the question, Why is this Christmas shop owner also involved with a huge building explosion? According to Wright, It was the largest effect in the show and required weeks of planning and involvement from many teams and departments. We filmed the talented Sarah Drew on bluescreen getting hit by air cannons we had background plates of the building, lighting effect plates, lens elements we even built the window panel with candy glass and fired air cannons through it to get realistic glass and debris. In post, we then simulated the exploding buildings fireball and animated extra destruction elements like doors, bricks and rocks, he continues. Adding even more layers, we simulated dust clouds and sparks that engulfed Emily and crashed the shot to black. All of these filmed and CGI components were brought together and composited into the final shot that was intended to capture the dark notion, Who is Emily really? • Holy Name Science High School // 1925
    buildingsofnewengland.com
The third and final extant building on the former Church of the Holy Name of Jesus complex in Chicopee, Massachusetts, is this former school building, a stunning example of Colonial Revival architecture. Located behind the former church and rectory buildings, this three-story building was built in 1925 as a Science building to accompany an existing girls high school. Inside, the building had a Commercial department, where young girls could learn important skills like banking, stenography, and typing; with the second floor containing traditional science classrooms and labs along with the school library. Springfield-based architect, John W. Donahue, who specialized in ecclesiastical buildings in Western Massachusetts, designed the building in the Colonial Revival style with brick and stone construction, an elaborate entrance and Palladian window on the second floor facade. The school building closed in the late 20th century, and has seemingly sat vacant ever-since. I sincerely hope this important building could be incorporated as much-needed housing for Chicopee residents!

  • Elon Musk Creates Confusion About Direct File, the IRS Free Tax-Prep Program
    time.com
Elon Musk speaks at a Trump inauguration event in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20, 2025.Christopher FurlongGetty ImagesBy Fatima Hussein and Barbara Ortutay / APFebruary 3, 2025 10:00 PM ESTWASHINGTON Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk posted Monday on his social media site that he had deleted 18F, a government agency that worked on technology projects such as the IRS Direct File program. This led to some confusion about whether Direct File is still available to taxpayers, but the free filing program is still available, at least for the coming tax season. While Musks tweet may have intimated that the group of workers had been eliminated, an individual with knowledge of the IRS workforce said the Direct File program was still accepting tax returns. The individual spoke anonymously with The Associated Press because they were not authorized to talk to the press. As of Monday evening, 18Fs website was still operational, as was the Direct File website. But the digital services agencys X account was deleted. The IRS announced last year that it will make the free electronic tax return filing system permanent and asked all 50 states and the District of Columbia to help taxpayers file their returns through the program in 2025.The Direct File trial began in March 2024. But the IRS has face intense blowback to Direct File from private tax preparation companies that have made billions from charging people to use their software and have spent millions lobbying Congress. The average American typically spends about $140 preparing their returns each year.Commercial tax prep companies that have lobbied against development of the free file program say free file options already exist.Several organizations, including private tax firms, offer free online tax preparation assistance to taxpayers under certain income limits. Fillable forms are available online on the IRS website, but they are complicated and taxpayers still have to calculate their tax liability.Last May the IRS announced it would make the Direct File program permanent. It is now available in 25 states, up from 12 states that were part of last years pilot program. The program allows people in some states with very simple W-2s to calculate and submit their returns directly to the IRS. Those using the pilot program in 2024 claimed more than $90 million in refunds, the IRS said in October.During his confirmation hearing Jan. 16, Scott Bessent, now treasury secretary, committed to maintaining the Direct File program at least for the 2025 tax season, which began Jan. 27.Musk was responding to a post by an X user who called 18F far left and mused that Direct File puts the government in charge of preparing peoples taxes. That group has been deleted, Musk wrote.More Must-Reads from TIMETrump and Musk Have All of Washington on EdgeWhy AI Safety Researchers Are Worried About DeepSeekBehind the Scenes of The White Lotus Season ThreeWhy, Exactly, Is Alcohol So Bad for You?The Motivational Trick That Makes You Exercise Harder11 New Books to Read in FebruaryHow to Get Better at Doing Things AloneColumn: Trumps Trans Military Ban Betrays Our TroopsContact us at letters@time.com

  • Nvidia's answer to AMD Fluid Motion Frames works on all DX11 and DX12 games
    www.techspot.com
In brief: Buried near the end of the description for the Nvidia App update that introduced support for RTX 50 series graphics cards, multi-frame generation, and DLSS 4, is a little-noticed new feature: driver-level single-frame generation for any DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 game running on Nvidia's latest GPUs. Early testing suggests that the company's "Smooth Motion" AI model significantly boosts perceived frame rates in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, with only minor visual artifacts. The few users who have managed to get their hands on a GeForce RTX 5080 or 5090 can engage frame generation in most games released in the past 15 years through a new Nvidia App setting. A future update will extend the functionality to RTX 40 series GPUs.Dubbed "Nvidia Smooth Motion," this driver-level model interpolates one AI-generated frame between every two traditionally rendered frames in DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles that lack native DLSS or frame generation support.Similar to AMD's Fluid Motion Frames, it extends the benefits of single-frame generation originally introduced with RTX 40 series cards by bringing it to back-catalog games. The Smooth Motion setting is located in Graphics > Driver Settings for both individual program settings and global settings in Nvidia App version 11.0.2.312 or later, just below the DSR Factors setting. According to PC Games Hardware, which tested the feature on a pre-release build of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, toggling Smooth Motion on or off requires rebooting the game. When enabled on an RTX 5080 at 4K DLSS quality mode under the game's maximum "Experimental" graphics preset, Smooth Motion increased the average output frame rate from 83.3 fps to 135 fps a 62% uplift. However, capping the frame rate at 120 fps and enabling variable refresh rate resulted in significantly smoother frame times while reducing the rendered frame rate to 60 fps. Fortunately, latency remains largely unaffected, especially if Nvidia Reflex is activated. // Related StoriesNote the distorted text and blurred characters. Compare with non-AI-generated frame here. Click to enlarge. However, Smooth Motion introduces more noticeable artifacts than full native frame-gen implementations because it applies interpolation uniformly rather than selectively. For instance, interface elements like subtitles may appear distorted in AI-generated frames.Additionally, the feature remains active during Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's cutscenes, which are normally locked at 30 fps. While visual flaws such as blurred characters are less apparent at higher frame rates, they become more pronounced when 30 fps cutscenes are interpolated to 60 fps.More in-depth testing will likely emerge as RTX 50 series GPUs reach more consumers in the coming weeks and Smooth Motion rolls out to RTX 40 series cards.
