• iPhone Ultra concept visualizes Apples smartphone in rubber body with straight camera array
    www.yankodesign.com
When your wife is out and youre home alone, most of us, given the first chance, will raid the kitchen, stock up on snacks, and glue ourselves to the TV: lost in an FPS battle of relentless shooting and strategic hiding. A handful of others might call friends for an impromptu beer party. But for a creator, curiosity is the driving force. A free mind nurtures that curiosity, and for a designer wife away sparks ideation; just like in the one who envisioned the latest iPhone design. This iPhone design is not so much about predicting the next Apple move and graphically displaying the ideation. Its a random thought about what the prized iPhone could be in its bare state without the cover if it were not slimy and protruding in places.Designer: Braz de PinaConceived and rendered by Brazilian designer Braz de Pina, who is essentially a Principal Designer at Microsoft, the iPhone UltraVision, as he calls it is a tantalizing concept that replaces the traditional square camera bump and gives the iPhone a nice grip to hold and use without a rubbery cover. The thought of creating an iPhone that can be used without the case came randomly to the designer one day, he says I was sitting on my couch thinking about my phone and its rubbery blue cover. I pondered why do we buy a beautiful product only to cover it up?We all buy the iPhone besides our loyalty to the Apple ecosystem for its thin profile, exemplary design, and holistic smartphone experience. But this experience is concealed behind a silicone cover for most of its lifetime in our hands. Addressing this, may be made up but I think a considerable -challenge, Braz de Pinas iPhone Ultra has a durable rubber frame. It skips past the idea of thinness and thickens the body so that the camera array at the back can be aligned against the phone surface to eliminate the protruding bump at the back. While some Android phone OEMs have tested and gone past the idea of a retractable selfie camera, iPhone Ultra thinks its an idea worth 2025. The retractable front camera from images seems pretty straightforward, but in 2025, maybe if it swivels 360 degrees, some company if not Apple may just take the cue. Anyway, the 3D renders describe the concept better than the words can; so, I leave you to check out the images of what a Microsoft designer thinks iPhone could be!The post iPhone Ultra concept visualizes Apples smartphone in rubber body with straight camera array first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Nendo Designs Six Wooden Cottages Connected Via A Swooping Roof In Japan
    www.yankodesign.com
Japanese studio Nendo recently designed a home consisting of six wooden cottages connected via a fascinating and swooping roof. Located in Karuizawa in Central Japan, the home is designed to create the image of a family holding hands. The house is created for a family of four, and it is perched on a hill with a view of the lovely Mount Asama.Dubbed the Hand in Hand House, the six cottages measure around 20 square meters, and they have been angled, so they all face different directions while being connected by a sculptural roof. The cottages are also connected via a wooden terrace on stilts. The terrace is blessed with lovely views of the surrounding landscape.Designer: NendoThe black roofs have been added to give an interesting graphic detail against the pale facades. The diverse heights are designed to mimic the surrounding hills. If you view the houses from the top, the roof gives them a consistent and streamlined aesthetic. The cottages have been designed for different functionalities one contains the kitchen, while the other holds the dining area or bedrooms. In the bathroom area of each building, a sleek rectangular bathtub is strategically positioned next to expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. These windows are a signature feature in all the cottages, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape and allowing natural light to flood the space, creating a serene and immersive bathing experience.Nendo designed the Hand in Hand House with the intention of granting each living unit its own unique characteristics, catering to the familys desire for privacy and individuality. At the same time, the architectural design maintains a cohesive aesthetic, projecting a sense of unity across all units through the use of a connected roof structure. This thoughtful design approach ensures that while family members can enjoy their personal space, the overall structure fosters a harmonious and interconnected living environment. The cottages are gently intertwined, with the roofs harmoniously holding hands, the studio said. The house maintains a respectful distance that honors each family members time and individuality while still fostering connection among the family, resulting in a true embodiment of a family holding hands. As you enter the Hand in Hand House, you are welcomed by an inviting and warm aesthetic. Wood paneling was selected for the walls and floors, while the unique shapes of the white ceilings make for an attractive and appealing detail. The furniture is quite simple, amped with grey hues and pale wood. This creates a living environment that feels very minimal and homely. Nendo is known for creating unique and one-of-a-kind structures that are far from the ordinary, and the Hand in Hand House follows suit with its exceptional and extraordinary structure and design philosophy. The post Nendo Designs Six Wooden Cottages Connected Via A Swooping Roof In Japan first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Workday to cut 1,750 jobs, shift focus to AI and global expansion
    www.computerworld.com
Workday said Wednesday it will lay off 1,750 employees, roughly 8.5% of its workforce, as part of a restructuring plan to invest more heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and accelerate international growth. The California-based company disclosed the layoffs in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, attributing the decision to its focus on what its leaders call durable growth. While details on specific departments affected were not provided in the filing, executives emphasized that artificial intelligence initiatives and overseas markets represent key areas where the company will continue hiring.Companies everywhere are reimagining how work gets done, and the increasing demand for AI has the potential to drive a new era of growth for Workday, Carl Eschenbach, CEO of Workday, said in a memo to employees included with the filing.Concern about customer supportSome industry observers are concerned about how Workdays layoffs affect customer support. John Yensen, who leads the managed IT services firm Revotech Networks, said he believes customers will likely face disruptions to their support and service soon.AI could help offset this by automating routine inquires and streamlining the customer service process, but the largest concern, as in all similar cases, is whether AI support will able to handle and improve the level of service that enterprise clients expect and have become accustomed to, he said.Timothy DeStefano, associate professor of research at Georgetown Universitys McDonough School of Business, suggested that the outcome will largely depend on the companys approach to the restructuring. One way to try to prevent layoffs from affecting the level and quality of customer support is to avoid eliminating positions that are customer-facing or critical to customer engagement, DeStefano said. It may also be helpful for the business to cross-train employees so that the remaining workers can handle multiple roles during the transition.Workday did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Strategy suggests a careful realignment of resourcesWorkdays leadership has pointed to artificial intelligence as a central reason for the reallocation of resources. While the AI transition presents challenges, DeStefano noted that the investment could pay off: Making investments in technology, particularly AI, is not cheap, but an accumulation of empirical evidence suggests that, if done correctly, performance improvements and efficiency gains can be achieved. However, it takes time and restructuring to implement new technologies, and thus, there may be some hiccups along the way.International expansion is another priority for Workday, which plans to seize the growing demand for cloud-based HR solutions outside the United States. DeStefano noted that the company is taking a three-pronged approach to ensure financial stability: cost reductions, market expansion overseas, and investing in tools designed to enhance decision-making and improve efficiency. This is particularly relevant given the increasing competition within the market, increased consolidation through firm acquisitions, and the potential for slower demand due to higher interest rates. While specific regional targets werent disclosed, DeStefano observed that the companys strategy suggests a careful realignment of resources. Based on their statements, they have decided to close certain locations while opening new ones. This suggests that the geographical reorganization is designed to restructure their regional footprint to keep pace with evolving consumer demand across their markets, he said. Additionally, while the company is laying off employees, they are not enacting a hiring freeze. Instead, they have stated that they will add workers to critical locations and roles within the company, along with making AI investments, to maintain and enhance its applications for consumers throughout the transition and in the long run.Workday faces intense competition in HR software from both established firms and startups, according to Janice Quek, an analyst at investment research firm CFRA.However, the AI opportunity is clear, and the company will need to innovate in order to remain competitive in the enterprise software space, Quek said. On that front, it has released several AI products, including AI agents, that will unlock capacity for its users, with more solutions in the pipeline. We expect [Workday] to also leverage AI internally to alleviate talent gaps, streamline workflows, and automate their operational processes and services to smooth its transition and enhance its own execution.

  • Dozens of Artworks Rescued From War-Torn Ukraine Go on Display in Berlin

The Brook,Frits Thaulow, 1875/1906 Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art, inv. no. -122, Gemldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin / Eigentum des Museums fr Westliche und stliche Kunst Odesa / Christoph SchmidtSince Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, it has repeatedlybombed the southern city ofOdesa, reducing many of its historic buildings to rubble. But now, thanks to the work of museum employees, some of the Black Sea port citys cultural artifacts that were evacuated to safety are now on display in Berlin.Shortly after the invasion, the staff of the century-old Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art moved many of its most valuable artworks to a storage facility for safekeeping. The following year, workers sent 74 items to Germany, where they were cleaned and restored. Now, most of those pieces are on display at Gemldegalerie, an art museum in Berlin. The exhibition, titled From Odesa to Berlin: European Painting From the 16th to the 19th Century, opened late last month. Restorers Anja Lindner-Michael and Thuja Seidel unpacked the artworks in Berlin in September 2023. Sabine LataOdesas beautiful old town, where the Museum of Western and Eastern Art is situated, has been attacked by missiles time and again, German PresidentFrank-Walter Steinmeier said at the shows opening, per theArt Newspapers Catherine Hickley. In countless Ukrainian towns and cities, listed buildings continue to be damaged, cultural institutions destroyed and works of art stolen. The attacks against museums, theaters, operas and libraries are intended to wipe out Ukraines cultural memory. The exhibition features works from the Odesa museums European paintings collection, including pieces by the Italian artistBernardo Strozzi and the Dutch artistsFrans Hals andCornelis de Heem. The paintings came to Germany from a storage facility in Lviv, Ukraine, where thousands of artworks were piled up in overcrowded depots, reports Deutsche Welles Stefan Dege.Igor Poronyk, director of the Odesa museum, tells Margarete Kreuzer of the German broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg(RBB) that the storage conditions were not optimal, per a translation by Deutsche Welle. Officials feared the paintings would be destroyed by mold, so they asked the Berlin museum for help. The exhibition showcases 60 major artworks from the Ukrainian museum. Staatliche Museen zu Berlin / David von BeckerIn late 2023, a truck carried 74 paintingsmany of them without framesto Berlin, according to a statement from the Berlin State Museums. Two conservators cleaned the paintings and placed them in newly cut frames. From Odesa to Berlin includes 60 major artworks from the Ukrainian museum alongside 25 pieces from the Berlin museums collection. The collaborative exhibition is an important sign of solidarity, as Gemldegalerie directorDagmar Hirschfelder tells RBB. Cultural assets, Ukrainian cultural assets, are being actively destroyed and annihilated. And making a contribution here is very important to us.The exhibition is divided into nine chapters highlighting different genres of European painting, which reflect the multifaceted nature of the Ukrainian collection, which has hitherto been little known in Western Europe, per the statement.Portrait of Olena Tolstoy,Domenico Morelli, 1875 Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art, inv. no. -111, Gemldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin / Eigentum des Museums fr Westliche und stliche Kunst Odesa / Christoph SchmidtI hope that this exhibition will be seen by many people from Germany, Europe and around the world, Steinmeier said at the opening. I hope that Ukrainians who have found refuge here in Germany will find a piece of home in the paintings. Most importantly, the president added, he hopes the paintings will be returned to the Odesa museum in a free and independent Ukraine. It gives us hope when people come to the museum and see that paper and canvas have lasted for so many years and experienced so much, Poronyk tells RBB.
