  • How to set up trade routes with merchants in Civilization 7
    www.polygon.com
Trade routes in Civilization 7 are how youll get access to another powers resources and the bonuses they give you. Youll need to set up trade routes if youre going for the Antiquity Age Economic Legacy Path and its milestones. Its also key for securing an Economic Victory. Our Civilization 7 guide will tell you what you need to research to unlock merchants and trade routes, and how to use the trade resources you get from them. How to unlock merchants in Civilization 7To set up a trade route, youll need to unlock merchants. Merchants are unique to each age, so youll have to unlock them three times over the course of a game:In the Antiquity Age, youll find them under Code of Laws in the Civic tree. Youll need to research Mysticism and Discipline first. In the Exploration Age, theyre under the Economics Civic node, one of the first options you have.In the Modern Age, theyre unlocked by Steam Engine in the Tech tree, also one of the first options.Once youve unlocked merchants (or your civilizations version of merchants), youll need to train them in a city or town. How to use merchants in Civilization 7Merchants have two uses in Civilization 7: building roads and establishing trade routes. Roads are a way for your settlements on the same continent to be connected together, speed up travel between them, and share food. Some settlements get connected by roads automatically, but not all, and thats when youll need a merchant.Merchants also create roads between the settlements of two different civilizations when you use them to create a trade route. Trade routes are a way to import resources from other civilizations and (certain) independent city-states.How to establish a trade route in Civilization 7The first step in setting up a trade route is finding someone to trade with. You could send out a merchant to wander aimlessly, but this is better done with a scout the first unit you should train in every game anyway.Youll need to find someone elses town or city. You cant trade with city-states until theyre aligned with you and youre their suzerain. And finally, youll need a relationship of unfriendly or better with whoever you want to trade with. Basically, you cant actively be at war with them.Once youve got someone to trade with and youve researched the necessary Tech or Civic to unlock merchants youll have to train (or purchase) a merchant. Merchants require about 40 Production to train. When your merchant appears, youll get a pop-up with a list of potential trade partners and the improved resources those settlements have. You can send your merchant wherever you want, or you can click on a settlement from the list to zoom the map to your destination automatically.Settlements you can create trade routes with will be green and those you cant will be red (more on this in a second). Once your merchant makes the trip to the settlement, youll get a new button that creates the trade route. On the next turn, youll be able to assign the trade resources you get from it to your settlements. Why cant I set up a trade route in Civilization 7There are a lot of reasons you might not be able to set up a trade route, but most of them arent easy to figure out on your own. A lot of the time, its safer to assume you cant, and wait for your economic adviser pops in to tell you about an opportunity.First, you have to be able to reach the settlement youre trading with either overland or by sea. And the distance to the settlement has to be within your maximum trade route length. All of that is affected by the Civics and Tech you research, your choice of leader, your choice of civilization, and what age youre in. At the default, your maximum trade route distance is pretty short. The settlement youre trying to trade with also needs to have a trade resource to give you. Resources the square-ish icons on the map come in three types: Empire Resources (resources that stay inside your empire), City Resources (resources that can only be assigned to cities), and Bonus Resources (resources that can be assigned to either towns or cities). Only City and Bonus Resources can travel on a trade route. What type of resource something is doesnt come up on the popup when you hover over the resource, though. As a general rule, Empire Resources are things that give you Production bonuses to building buildings and wonders, and the other (trade-able) resources give you bonuses to the other yields like Food and Happiness. Finally, you have to have an available trade route with the target civilizations leader. You start with one trade route per other leader. How to make more trade routes in Civilization 7Youll add trade routes with the Improve Trade Relations Diplomatic Action. Each time you do this, it immediately adds one possible trade route with that leader. The problem is that you cant actually see the number of available trade routes. Its easy to end up with way more trade routes than the other leader even has settlements. If you can, its better to bank up some Influence and wait until you have a merchant trained. When you see that there are no routes available to them (the cities are in red), go Improve Trade Relations with who you want. Its instant, so youll be able to hop right back to the merchant and set up your new route. For more Civilization 7 guides, see our explainers on treasure fleets and distant lands. • Best leaders to start with in Civilization 7
    www.polygon.com
Who you choose as your leader is one of the first big decisions youll make in Civilization 7. There are a few things to consider here, as every leader has their own strengths and weaknesses, and youre stuck with them through all three ages of your game.In this Civilization 7 guide, were going to give you some basic advice for what to think about when choosing your first leader, and then give you some recommendations on the best leaders to start with in Civilization 7.What to think about before choosing a leader? The main thing you want to consider when picking your leader is what kind of victory youd like to achieve in Civilization 7. There are four main victory conditions:EconomicMilitaryScienceCultureEach victory has its own playstyle in Civilization 7. Its a big decision, and you should make sure you understand the different ways to achieve victory in Civilization 7 before you pick the leader that will help you along that path. Check out our guide on all the different types of Civilization 7 victories before you pick.Past the victory condition, you want to consider if you have any personal connections to these leaders and their nations of origin. Are you Italian or Italian American? Maybe give Machiavelli a spin on your way to an Economic Victory. Do you not really have a cultural connection to any leader but love the hit Broadway musical Hamilton? Then pick Lafayette and go for a Culture Victory.Once youve come to a conclusion on what kind of victory youd like to achieve, look in that victorys section below to see what three leaders we recommend you try out first.Best Economic leadersEconomic Victories are all about enriching the world, but pocketing most of the cash for your own civilization. You want to select leaders who can generate a lot of Gold and Influence. With that in mind, there are three Economic leaders we recommend starting with:Xerxes, the AchaemenidMachiavelliIsabellaWell give you a brief explanation of why each of these leaders are worth a look below. And more details on how to get this type of victory, see our Economic Victory walkthrough.Xerxes, the AchaemenidPerks:+1 trade route limit with all other leadersGain 50 Culture and 100 Gold when you create a trade route or road+1 Culture and Gold per age on unique buildings and improvementsXerxes is able to have more trade routes with civilizations by default, giving him more resources and wealth without much work. He also instantly gains Gold (and Culture) when creating a trade route, and generates bonus Culture and Gold on unique buildings and improvements. These perks come together to create a leader who is able to quickly stack Gold, use that Gold to construct buildings, and then benefit from permanent Culture and Gold bonuses for the rest of the game.MachiavelliPerks:+3 Influence per ageGains 50 Gold per age when your Diplomatic Action proposals are accepted, or 100 Gold when they are rejectedIgnores relationship requirements for declaring formal warsCan levy troops from city-states you are not suzerain ofBeing a morally bankrupt sneak is named after Machiavelli, so naturally hes a great choice for an Economic Victory. He earns a ton of Gold when instigating diplomatic actions, and is able to defend himself (or take a quick opportunity for a surprise war) with the armies of city-states. This means you can play Machiavelli as a powerful diplomat who is able to enrich himself on every interaction. But, when diplomacy fails, you can get the upper hand with a surprise war that has no penalties, and you can use support troops from nearby city-states to help bolster your numbersIsabellaPerks:Gain 300 Gold every time you discover a Natural Wonder. This is doubled if the Natural Wonder is in distant lands100% tile yields from Natural Wonders+50% Gold toward purchasing naval units-1 Gold maintenance for naval unitsIsabellas boosts arent very helpful in the Antiquity Age, but thats okay because succeeding at the Economic Legacy Path in the Antiquity Age is very simple. Instead, her skills land more on benefits for Natural Wonders, scouting, and naval units. That will help a lot in the most difficult age for the Economic Legacy Path the Exploration Age.Best Military leadersMilitary Victories are mostly about jumping in and out of wars and conquering settlements. Youll leverage Gold and Production in order to build a massive army and take on the rest of the world. With that in mind, there are three Military leaders we recommend starting with:Ashoka, World ConquerorCharlemagneHarriet TubmanWell give you a brief explanation of why each of these leaders are worth a look below. And for more details about how to get this type of victory, see our Military Victory walkthrough.Ashoka, World ConquerorPerks:+1 Production for every 5 excess Happiness in cities+1% Production in settlements not founded by youDeclaring a formal war grants a celebration+10 combat strength against districts for all units during a celebrationAshoka is all about earning celebrations both through war and Happiness, which then gives him bonus combat strength while attacking districts. This makes him very capable when it comes to taking cities, which will enable you to increase your settlements and gain points toward your Legacy Path in multiple ages.CharlemagnePerks:Military and Science buildings receive a Happiness adjacency for quartersGain 2 free cavalry units, once unlocked, when entering a celebration+5 combat strength for cavalry units during a celebrationCharlemagne gains cavalry units whenever a celebration happens, and those units are more powerful throughout the celebrations run. He also generates Happiness with military and Science buildings. This increased happiness on war-focused buildings will help you combat some of the rioting that can come during long periods of war. Plus it helps pave the way toward the next celebration, giving you even more units and power.Harriet TubmanPerks:+100% Influence towards initiating espionage actionsGain 5 War Support on all wars declared against youUnits ignore movement penalties from vegetationHarriet Tubman takes an unconventional approach to securing a Military Victory, and is more about diplomatic espionage. What makes her really strong, however, is that she automatically starts at +5 War Support when others declare war on her, which is great, because being a warmonger makes it more likely for other civilizations to hate you and want to fight you which ultimately gives you more opportunities to progress toward a Military Victory.Best Science leadersScience Victories are all about advancing your technology faster than the competition and winning the space race. Youll leverage Science and Production to build launch pads and launch space projects. With that in mind, there are three Science leaders we recommend starting with:Benjamin FranklinConfuciusHimiko, Queen of WaWell give you a brief explanation of why each of these leaders are worth a look below. And for more details about how to get this type of victory, see our Science Victory walkthrough.Benjamin FranklinPerks:+1 Science per age on Production buildings in cities+50% Production towards constructing Production buildings+1 Science per age from active endeavors you started or supportedCan have two endeavors of the same type active at a timeBenjamin Franklin is able to stack Production and Science together very quickly, as he gets benefits for Science on every Production building (which he can also build faster), making his Science-per-turn income extremely high by the Modern Age. Since Science and Production go hand-in-hand, and help you build and research the space and aeronautics facilities youll need to win in the Modern Age, hes a very easy choice for the Science Legacy Path.ConfuciusPerks:+25% growth rate in cities+2 Science from specialistsConfucius benefits are simple, but very powerful. His cities grow faster, meaning hes able to assign specialists at a faster pace. He also earns two bonus Science from every specialist, which makes him very good at completing the most difficult Legacy Path for Science players: the Exploration Age.Himiko, Queen of WaPerks:Gain a unique endeavor called Friend of Wei that can be performed in an alliance to grant you and your ally +25% Science+4 Science per age for every leader you are friendly or helpful withCan support endeavors for freeHimiko is able to take a more diplomatic path through the Science Victory, and has tools to help her increase relationships with allies (like bonus Science actions). This makes it less likely for her to be thrown into a war, which can really tank your Science yields and make victory more challenging to achieve.Best Culture leadersCulture Victories are all about wowing the world with your civilizations greatest achievements. Youll leverage Culture and Production to study and build Wonders, missionaries, and explorers. With that in mind, there are three Culture leaders we recommend starting with:AugustusLafayetteCatherine The GreatWell give you a brief explanation of why each of these leaders are worth a look below. And for more details about how to get this type of victory, see our Culture Victory walkthrough.AugustusPerks:+2 Production in the capital for every townCan purchase Culture buildings in towns+50% Gold towards purchasing buildings in townsAugustus is all about spreading your Culture yields around the empire, as hes able to make a lot of towns quickly and place Culture generating buildings in said towns. With Augustus, you can rack up a disgusting amount of Culture and Gold, which will help you race toward building the Worlds Fair Wonder in the Modern Age.LafayettePerks:Gains a unique endeavor called Reform, which grants an additional Social Policy slot. Supporting this endeavor also grants the other leader an additional Social Policy slot.+1 combat strength for every Tradition, but not policy, slotted in the government+2 Culture and Happiness per age in settlements. These effects are doubled in distant landsLafayette is able to stack his government with Social Policy slots, which really helps increase your power as you progress through the Civics tree and unlock more Social Policies. Lafayette also gains bonus Culture and Happiness in all of his settlements throughout the entire game. Thats not as flashy as some of the other leaders, but its also not conditional on him doing anything at all. Lafeyette just generates more Culture for every settlement he has, which will really help you push through the Civics trees in all ages.Catherine The GreatPerks:+2 Culture per age on displayed Great WorksBuildings with Great Work slots gain 1 additional slotCities settled in Tundra gain Science equal to 25% of their Culture per turnCatherine The Great is excellent at blowing through the Exploration Age and the Modern Age because of the bonuses she gets when displaying Great Works. But her best benefit is that she generates Science at 25% of her Culture yield on any cities established on tundra terrain. If you can swing a lot of tundra cities, you can win a cultural victory without falling as far behind on Science, which will be a major help in the long run i.e., the one thing that Civilization 7 is all about. For more Civilization 7 guides, see our guides to all victories and all Legacy Paths.

  • OpenAI Just Introduced More Ways to Use ChatGPT on WhatsApp
    lifehacker.com
Back in December, OpenAI rolled out a new way to chat with ChatGPT: You can reach out to the generative AI by calling 1-800-CHATGPT (no, really)or, if you have WhatsApp, you can text that same number to share what's on your mind. While many of ChatGPT's distinct features were missing, the core of the experience was still present. You text or ask ChatGPT something out loud, and the bot responds in kind. For WhatsApp users, that largely feels like texting a friendonly, that friend happens to respond right away with a detailed response generated entirely by AI. (We all have one of those friends, right?) Now, less than two months after rolling out this new way to contact ChatGPT, OpenAI is expanding its features on WhatsApp. There are two key updates here: One, you can now upload and send images when chatting with ChatGPT, which means you can request that the bot analyzes a photo, or provide an image as added context to a greater query. Second, you can share voice messages to ChatGPT. If there are times when you can't call ChatGPT and talk for extended periods of time, but you don't want to type out your full question, you can simply send a voice message instead.OpenAI also shared that the company is working on a way for users to link their ChatGPT accounts (whether free, Plus, or Pro) to WhatsApp, but that feature isn't live yet. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. While these updates should make it a bit easier for WhatsApp users to use ChatGPT through the messaging app, the entire experience is still quite limited: OpenAI gives all U.S. numbers 15 minutes of call time per month, with a "daily limit" on WhatsApp messages. In addition, this experience has a knowledge cut off of October of 2023, so don't expect this version of ChatGPT to know anything that's happened in the past year and a half. If you like ChatGPT, you should probably just download the ChatGPT app. However, if you only want to interact with the bot once in a blue moon, and don't want to clutter your phone up with yet another app (another AI app, at that), suresend ChatGPT all the images and voice messages you want (or, more accurately, can).

  • You Should Enable the Shortcut Feature in the Android Google Widget
    lifehacker.com
The Google widget for your Android home screen has a new hidden feature that's disabled by default. In its latest update, the Google app has added a new customization feature, letting you add a new shortcut to the Google app's widget. This will let you tap an icon within the widget to quickly jump to reading the news, seeing weather updates, or catching up on sports scores. To get it, first ensure your Google app is updated to the latest version (16.3.34 or above). Then, open the Google app on your smartphone and tap the Profile icon in the top toolbar. Choose the Settings option and naigate to the Customize Search Widget menu. Here, you can take a moment to customize the look of the widget by tweaking the color and the transparency.Scroll down until you'll see the new Shortcuts section, featuring new shortcuts like Translate, Song Search, Weather, Translate (Camera), Translate (Text), Sports, Dictionary, Homework, and Finance. Tap the Plus button to add your new shortcut. Credit: Khamosh Pathak Choose the shortcut that you want, which you'll be able to preview right up top. The Google widget only supports one shortcut at a time, so you can't add multiple shortcuts right now. The new shortcut will appear next to the default icons for Voice Search and Lens, inside the Google search box. The icons don't support Material You theming, so they won't match with your home screen theme if you're using one. But for most Android users, that isn't an issue. In case you don't already have the Google widget set up, you can easily do so from the home screen. The steps differ slightly based on which Android OS you're using. Tap and hold on an empty part of the home screen and choose the Widgets option. Here, scroll to the Google app section and add the Google widget. You can expand it or make it smaller. Now, with the widget, you will see your new shortcut right there. Tap on the shortcut to jump to the relevant feature inside the Google app.

  • Uber opens waitlist for driverless Waymo rides in Austin
    www.engadget.com
Uber app users in Austin can now get on an interest list for a chance to match with Waymo autonomous cabs, according to The New York Times. The rides arent available yet, but theyre coming to a 37 square miles area of the city in "early 2025" according to Bloomberg.Uber once had self-driving ambitions of its own, but sold off its "Advanced Technologies Group" to Aurora in 2020. Since then, it has slowly deepened its relationship with Waymo. Driverless cabs became available through the app to customers in Phoenix starting in 2023, and driverless deliveries spun up there in early 2024. Waymo, on the other hand, has kept some markets like San Francisco, where driverless rides can only be booked through the Waymo One app tightly guarded. This makes it somewhat surprising to see Waymo partnering with Uber exclusively in Austin and Atlanta. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/uber-opens-waitlist-for-driverless-waymo-rides-in-austin-144551425.html?src=rss

  • The Beats Studio Pro headphones are back on sale for $180
    www.engadget.com
There's a reason I didn't pick up my first pair of over-ear headphones until last year: they're expensive. But, that's where nice sales come in handy. And, there's a very nice sale going on right now, with the Beats Studio Pro down to $180 from $350 a 49 percent discount. It's not as low as Black Friday's $160 deal, but the sale is available on every model except the Earth color. The Beats Studio Pro came out in mid-2023 and got an 81 in our review. We were impressed with its improved sound quality over its predecessor, good transparency mode and solid voice performance. However, they're not the most comfortable option and don't have automatic pausing. If you want over-ear headphones for even less money then check out the Beats Solo 4. They're currently half off at $100 from $200. We gave them a 79 in our review, as they offer a boost in sound quality and up to 50 hours of battery life (10 more than the Beats Studio Pro). But, they're also not the comfiest fit and again don't offer automatic pausing. Follow @EngadgetDeals on Twitter and subscribe to the Engadget Deals newsletter for the latest tech deals and buying advice. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/deals/the-beats-studio-pro-headphones-are-back-on-sale-for-180-142729183.html?src=rss
