• DeepSeek limits model access due to overwhelming server demand
    www.engadget.com
DeepSeek recent explosion in popularity continues to be a problem for the AI startup. In a notification spotted by Bloomberg, the company said it was temporarily limiting access to its application programming interface service in response to a shortage of server capacity."Due to current server resource constraints, we have temporarily suspended API service recharges to prevent any potential impact on your operations," DeepSeek said. "Existing balances can still be used for calls. We appreciate your understanding!" Separately, DeepSeek announced pricing for its chat model would increase to $0.27 per million input tokens and $1.10 per million output tokens starting February 8.DeepSeek has been dealing with overwhelming demand for its services since the debut of its R1 model on January 20. The company's emergence as a leading premier AI provider, and the fact it was able to train R1 for a fraction of the price it cost OpenAI to develop its o1 reasoning model, sent US investors into a panic. Major tech stocks, including NVIDIA, shed $1 trillion of value the Monday after DeepSeek's chatbot hit the top of the App Store. Since then, OpenAI has released its o3-mini model and Deep Research feature for ChatGPT.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/deepseek-limits-model-access-due-to-overwhelming-server-demand-151339342.html?src=rss

  • How ILM made the audience-favorite character Dulicbear for Wicked
    beforesandafters.com
An excerpt from befores & afters print magazine. In Wicked, the audience learns of the birth of Elphaba and her unnaturally green skin, and her subsequent upbringing by the nanny, Dulcibear (a talking bear voiced by Sharon D. Clarke). ILM was responsible for this character. Looking to maintain a sense of anthropomorphism to Dulcibear, ILM kept her locomotion on all fours as much as possible, discusses ILM animation supervisor David Shirk. When motion studies showed that cradling a baby in one arm resulted in a three-legged motion that resembled a limp, she was allowed to rise to her hind legs, but real-world bears are quite adept at walking on two legs, resulting in a strong person in a suit vibe. This was remedied by intentionally giving her a slightly exaggerated, lumbering gait.Dulcibear had a quick screen introduction and needed to quickly establish as a nurturing and appealing character, adds Shirk. To support this, subtle but important tweaks were made to her physical characteristicsher face and snout rounded, teeth reduced by varying degrees from shot to shot, and her claws rounded, smoothed, and shortened, and carefully posed to avoid direct contact with the baby in shots. In addition, we gave her the ability to twist her wrist to cradle and a small separation in her toes that allowed the impression of a thumb. The facial animation for Dulcibear was tailored for delivering musical dialogue with custom shapes designed to allow rapid phrasing weighted to the front of her snout. Says Shirk: This avoided excessive movement from her very large mouth and always with an overlay of characteristic bear nuances and movement in her facial animation to ground her as an animal. It was very helpful that bear nose movement is also quite appealing! Her non-singing acting was heavily based on human reference for overall timing and nuance. In Dulcibears interactions with the children, we always tried to balance realistic handling of her size and weight with a gentle style of moving.ILMs creature work extended further to the wolf doctor in Elphabas birth scene, as Shirk discusses. For our wolf doctor, we made a creative adjustment as natural wolf movement tends to strongly indicate their predatory nature, so she was instead mainly based on domesticated dogs like huskies, featuring a relaxed and less controlled way of moving. issue #26 WickedThe post How ILM made the audience-favorite character Dulicbear for Wicked appeared first on befores & afters.

  • Take a break from tracking the price of eggs and watch real drama unfold on the bald eagle nest cam
    www.fastcompany.com
While the country remains rightfully concerned about the future of democracy under the Trump administration, there is one American symbol that still radiates hope: the bald eagle. Two majestic birds, Jackie and Shadow, are trying to expand their family in Big Bear, California. Last week, Jackie laid three eggs, and now thousands of viewers are tuning in to the bald eagle nest cam maintained by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley to cheer their feathered friends on.Lets take a deeper look into the iconic bird and how you can watch the action:A brief history of our national symbolA shocking-but-true fact is that the bald eagle was not officially the national bird until President Joe Biden signed the bill into law in 2024, as NPR reported. Most people assumed this was already the case. This is because shortly after the countrys creation in 1776, three congressional committees tried to agree on an official seal to represent the new country. A consensus could not be reached, so Charles Thomson, the secretary of Congress, came up with the Great Seal, which borrowed elements of the three failed designs. A bald eagle replaced a white eagle because the species is native to North America.Congress approved Thomsons design in 1782, making the bald eagle the unofficial symbol of the new nation. The species would go on to grace flags, money, government buildings, military uniforms, and more.Jackie and Shadows journeyThe bald eagle nest cam was first established in 2016 to watch Jackies parents, Ricky and Lucy. Typically, bald eagles do not stay in Big Bear year-round, but these birds decided to do things differently.Jackie followed their example even after her parents disappearance. She began a relationship with a bald eagle named Mr. B at one of her parents old nests and hatched two chicks, Stormy and BBB. Sadly, BBB died after only six and a half weeks following a big rainstorm and freezing temperatures. While Stormy, Jackie, and Mr. B were still using the nest, Shadow decided to go after Jackies affections. Shadow must be some kind of a bald eagle smooth talker becauseeven though eagles typically mate for lifehe was successful in kicking Mr. B to the curb and taking over as Jackies mate.Jackie and Shadow have been together since 2018 and have successfully raised two chicks. Theyve faced lots of adversity along their parental journey, including ravens eating their eggs, some eggs being unfertilized, and even laying a broken egg.Webcam viewers watched these birds battle harsh weather conditions and mourn the loss of babies just as a human couple would. And during the past two seasons, Jackie and Shadow were not successful in hatching a chick, despite Jackie laying multiple eggs and the two being diligent incubators.Three eggs offer hope for new eaglets in 2025But despite their recent losses, Jackie and Shadow have persisted, and on January 22, 2025, Jackie laid her first egg of the season. Three days later, she laid another one, and on January 28, egg number 3 showed up.This is notable because eagles usually only lay one or two eggs. The incubation period is typically around 35 days long, and dramatic tension is building. At last check, the Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest Cam 1 had more than 11,000 live-streaming viewers on YouTube. (Cam 2, which is more of a wide shot, had just over 500 viewers.)To watch Jackie and Shadow care for their eggs, check out the webcam embedded below. Cross your wings and hope they hatch successfully!

  • This 4D-Printed Bio-inspired Smart Shade Moves on Its Own Without Electricity
    www.yankodesign.com
Researchers from the universities of Stuttgart and Freiburg have introduced an innovative approach to sustainable architecture with their latest invention, the Solar Gate. This 4D-printed, weather-responsive shading system autonomously opens and closes in response to environmental changeswithout the need for electricity. By leveraging advanced material science and computational fabrication, Solar Gate presents a significant step toward energy-efficient and adaptive building designs.Designers: University of Stuttgart & University of FreiburgAt the core of the Solar Gates functionality is 4D printing, an extension of traditional 3D printing that incorporates smart materials capable of transforming their shape over time. While 3D printing creates static objects, 4D printing integrates responsive materials that react to environmental factors like humidity and temperature. The researchers have successfully mimicked the structure of cellulose fibers found in plant tissues and utilized them in their fabrication process. These biobased cellulose fibers possess hygromorphic properties, meaning they swell and shrink based on moisture levels. This concept is inspired by nature, particularly the way pine cones open and close depending on humidity. By embedding this behavior into a computational fabrication process, the team has created bilayered structures that autonomously respond to their surroundings. The Solar Gate operates without any external energy source, relying entirely on environmental conditions to function. Its operation hinges on its ability to respond to changes in humidity: when humidity levels are high, the material absorbs moisture and expands, causing the printed layers to curl and open. Conversely, in low-humidity environments, the material releases moisture, contracts, and flattens, effectively closing the structure. This behavior enables the Solar Gate to naturally regulate indoor climate conditions, adapting seamlessly to different seasonal cycles without requiring any mechanical intervention. To validate their innovation, the researchers installed the Solar Gate on the south-facing skylight of the livMatS Biomimetic Shell, a research building at the University of Freiburg designed to study biomimetic solutions in architecture. This location provided an ideal setting to observe the long-term functionality of the shading system. Over a year-long test period, Solar Gate successfully demonstrated its ability to autonomously regulate indoor climate conditions by remaining open in winter to maximize sunlight penetration for natural heating and closing in summer to reduce solar radiation and prevent excessive indoor temperatures. This autonomous regulation highlights Solar Gates potential as a sustainable solution for passive building climate control, significantly reducing reliance on energy-intensive heating and cooling systems. The success of the Solar Gate highlights two crucial advancements in architecture and material science. One of the key breakthroughs is the feasibility of additive manufacturing in sustainable architecture. By utilizing standard 3D printers to create complex, functional structures, researchers have opened doors for more cost-effective and scalable solutions. Another major advancement is the potential of cellulose-based materials. As a widely available and renewable resource, cellulose has proven to be an excellent material for sustainable architectural applications, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of building components. As climate-responsive structures gain traction, innovations like Solar Gate pave the way for self-sustaining buildings that adapt to their environments without human intervention. With further research and development, such materials could become integral to future urban designs, enhancing both sustainability and energy efficiency in modern architecture. The post This 4D-Printed Bio-inspired Smart Shade Moves on Its Own Without Electricity first appeared on Yanko Design.
