• Severance: John Turturro Talks Irvings Decision in Season 2s Most Intense Scene
    www.denofgeek.com
This article contains spoilers for Severance season 2 episode 4.Woes Hollow, the fourth episode of Severances second season, might just be the shows most gripping installment yet. Thats saying a lot given that the first season finale of the Apple TV+ thriller was essentially an extended panic attack. And yet, in this hour alone, Severance season 2 pulls off several of the series most incredible twists thus far. Woes Hollow brings the innie versions of Mark S. (Adam Scott), Helly R. (Britt Lower), Irving B. (John Turturro), and Dylan G. (Zach Cherry) out into actual, honest-to-goodness nature for an Outdoor Retreat Team Building Occurrence or ORTBO. I knew there was no actual ceiling but this is fucking insane, Dylan says upon seeing a cloudy sky for the first time.Speaking of Dieter Eagan, the episode expands the background lore of Lumon Industries founder Kier Eagan to reveal that he apparently had a twin brother named Dieter. Mark and company are invited to go along on a perilous scavenger hunt to find The Fourth Appendix of Kiers works in Scissor Cave. The gang is assisted in the search by haunting specters of themselves that stand off in the distance and point towards the next direction. The Helly shade, in particular, is one of the most terrifying visuals ever presented on the show red hair slung over her face like a corporate yrei.We also get a major development in the burgeoning relationship between Mark and Helly when the pair physically consummate their attraction for the first time in a steamy tent above Scissor Cave. But, of course, its not Helly who Mark makes love to but really her outtie Helena Eagan. Thats right, Woes Hollow finally confirms what many fans have suspected since the first episode of this season: Helly R. is not who she claims to be. In fact, weve not seen the real Helly R. once this entire time until she makes her debut at the tail end of an icy baptism from a determined Irving. The Macrodata Refinement teams most scrupulous rule-follower threatens to drown his fellow employee unless she reveals who she truly is. So she does. With the glass door block removed, Helly R. comes back to life and Irving B. loses his. In his most loquacious and dangerous soliloquy yet, Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) banishes Irving B. to the fate of non-existence.You have threatened collegial murder in the pond of Woes Hollow. For this there can be no penalty but immediate and permanent dismissal. There shall be no formal valediction, catered or otherwise. Your Outtie will be notified forthwith.Phew! That is a hell of a lot to happen in one episode of television. And yet it all works, not only because Severance just happens to be good at making television, but also because it makes the wise decision to present most of it from one point of view. Though Woes Hollow contains Earth-shattering developments for nearly every character on the show, the backbone of it all remains Irving B. and his unlikely display of heroism. In fact, the episode opens with Irving B. awakening on the ice and then closes with his firing.Prior to the release of season 2, Den of Geek caught up with the cast of Severance to discuss whats to come. Irving B. performer and all-around acting legend John Turturro had a lot to say about this installment in particular. For starters, how was Irving able to see that Helly R. was a mole when his other co-workers couldnt? He picks up that theres something strange, theres something off about it, Turturro says. Its like meeting a friend a couple years later, and youre like, this isnt the same person here, you know, theyve changed.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! Also at play in Irvings superior deduction skills is his outties apparent military experience. In viewers first look at Irving Bailiffs outside life in the season 1 finale, various medals and other military relics were visible throughout Irvings spartan apartment. Its always open for debate how much of an outties personality makes it down to their innie, but Turturro is confident that Irving B. has at least some access to Irving Bailiffs training.I think that has to bleed in somewhat, he says. Its implied that [Irving] may have been in the military and I did my own sort of reconnaissance research before I even started the show. Thats built into his character, in a way. Something has to be there, just like it goes the other way around.Still, for as much as innie and outtie Irving share, the decision to essentially torture Helena Eagan is all innie Irvs and its one that he has to know that will lead to his termination. Facing death rather than dishonor is a big turnaround for the man who was once Lumons most steadfast loyalists. He just goes all the way with it, Turturro says. These people who follow the rules, there comes a moment where they go No more. Im not doing this anymore. They follow their impulse. That impulse may have taken innie Irving into the great office beyond. But true to his outtie, he went out a hero. Four episodes of Severance season 2 are available to stream on Apple TV+ now. New episodes premiere Fridays, culminating with the finale on March 21.

  • The USAID shutdown could make China more powerful. Beijing is already pouring billions into countries around the world.
    www.businessinsider.com
The end of USAID could mean more space for China to expand its global influence. The agency "assists US commercial interests," the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service said last month. Most of China's global investments come through the Belt and Road Initiative, not through aid.The abrupt shuttering of the US Agency for International Development a process the White House put into motion this week is likely to benefit China on the world stage."The chaotic end of USAID will undoubtedly rebound to China's benefit, even if it is unlikely to change Beijing's international development strategy in the short term," Jeremy Chan, a senior analyst on the China and Northeast Asia team at risk consultancy Eurasia Group, told Business Insider. If USAID is shuttered, "there may be opportunities for other aid givers like China to exert soft power influence through dispensing aid," said.USAID spent $32.5 billion in fiscal year 2024. Exact figures for China's foreign aid spending aren't fully public, but estimates from Japanese academics put the country's 2022 spend as high as $7.9 billion. While China is far from the US's clout in terms of aid, the East Asian giant has been trying to expand its influence politically and economically beyond its shores, namely through its Belt and Road Initiative, as its economy remains in a long downturn.Concerns about America's positioning without USAID come amid intensifying geopolitical rivalry between the world's two largest economies. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump's administration slapped a 10% tariff on all Chinese goods on top of prevailing levies. In response, China announced retaliatory tariffs on targeted US goods, including crude oil and machinery. An America-shaped hole for ChinaPresident Donald Trump and Elon Musk have called USAID wasteful and unaligned with American values. Nearly all USAID staff will be put on administrative leave starting Friday at midnight.Founded at the Cold War's height, USAID has never operated as a purely altruistic agency.USAID works with "strategically important countries" and "assists US commercial interests" by helping countries develop economically, per a report from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service last month. Some US politicians have argued that USAID or a similar aid program is essential to matching China's foreign aid and investment efforts.About half of USAID's 2024 spending went to humanitarian purposes or health and population purposes, such as funding HIV programs.USAID has long garnered bipartisan support. In 2022, then-Sen. Marco Rubio now the Secretary of State asked then-President Joe Biden to use his coming budget requests for USAID and other government agencies to counter China's "expanding global influence."Now, politicians from both parties are highlighting the agency's role amid its uncertain future. All US foreign aid accounts for about 1% of the federal budget."Our assistance abroad helps fight disease and stop starvation and famine, but it's also a tool to stave off the expansionist reach of authoritarian leaders in China, Russia, and Iran," Democratic"I have felt for a long time that USAID is our way to combat the Belt and Road Initiative, which is China's effort to really gain influence around the world, including Africa and South America in the Western Hemisphere," RepublicanChina has been flexing its influenceFor more than a decade, China has championed its flagship Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure project, through which Beijing has spent more than $1 trillion on gas pipelines, trains, and other trade and infrastructure projects globally.China has said BRI programs come with no political strings attached. However, critics say China is trying to ensnare developing countries into debt traps thus boosting Beijing's political leverage over debtor countries. The China-based Green Finance & Development Center estimates that between 145 and 149 countries around three-quarters of the world's total nations are directly involved in BRI projects or have indicated interest in cooperating. An analysis of 2023 data, the most recent year available, from the Green Finance & Development Center based at China's Fudan University showed how aid was geographically disbursed. At the country level in 2023, China invested most heavily through BRI in Indonesia at $7.3 billion, followed by Hungary at $4.5 billion and Peru at $2.9 billion. In Africa where nearly every country has received Chinese investments new roads, railways, and ports have been constructed over the last 10 years, while billions have been invested in energy infrastructure projects to give more residents electricity.China overtook the US as Africa's largest trading partner in 2009. Africa typically imports electronics, machinery, and manufactured goods from China and exports fuel and metals. In Asia, China has invested in new ports in Sri Lanka, high-speed rail in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, and infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan. In September, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said China would commit over $50 billion to Africa in financial aid. This was intended to strengthen Beijing's relationships with developing countries amid tensions with the US and other Western nations. To be sure, China's aid efforts are likely not able to match the gargantuan hole left by USAID in the short term. Beijing has also moved its BRI focus from mega infrastructure deals to what it calls "small and beautiful" projects, analysts told BI.But Beijing could shift its emphasis increasingly eastward, particularly to Africa and Southeast Asia, said Eurasia Group's Chan.China is already winning some clout from the abrupt potential shutdown of USAID."China looks like the good guy on the international stage simply by doing nothing," Chan told BI."While Beijing's calls for stronger multilateral cooperation, more free trade, and improved global governance at the UN and Davos will do little to actually further multilateral solutions to pressing global issues such as the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, supply chain resilience, or AI governance China will win points at the US's expense by at least keeping up appearances of being a responsible global stakeholder," he said.

  • ELF's CEO says people bought less makeup last month because they were too fixated on TikTok's turmoil
    www.businessinsider.com
ELF Beauty said it saw weak demand in January because of the LA wildfires and uncertainty over TikTok.ELF's CEO, Tarang Amin, said that social conversations around beauty dropped because of these factors. The brand suffered a 36% drop in profits in its latest quarter and lowered its 2025 outlook.Budget beauty brand ELF Beauty said demand for the beauty industry was weaker in January because of uncertainty over the banning of TikTok.The company's latest quarter, which ended on December 31, saw a 36% year-on-year profit drop. The company lowered its fiscal outlook for 2025 because of "softer than expected trends in January," according to the earnings report.ELF's CEO, Tarang Amin, said in a Thursday earnings call that January was a "weak month" for the brand. He said that the banning of TikTok and the devastating LA wildfires led to a drop in conversations about beauty on social media in January."First, the category continued to decline in January. We believe this decline is reflective of consumers stocking up in a highly promotional December and lower social conversation around beauty," Amin said. "Consumer mindshare was focused elsewhere, including wildfires in LA and uncertainty around the TikTok platform."He added that brands did not want to be "tone-deaf" during the wildfires. And regarding TikTok, he said that "the only thing people were posting on TikTok was whether it was going to stay open or shut down."TikTok, a social media platform by Chinese company ByteDance, faces an imminent banning in the US as the Supreme Court has imposed a divest-or-ban law on it.It was originally supposed to be banned on January 19, but President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the day of his inauguration to delay the ban by 75 days.TikTok Shop, which is the app's e-commerce feature, was the ninth-biggest online retailer for the beauty industry in the US as of February 2024, according to a report by software company Dash Hudson and Chicago-based market research company NielsenIQ.ELF reported a 31% increase in sales in the latest quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. It earned revenues of $355 million. However, higher sales and tax costs reduced its net income, according to its consolidated statements.ELF's stock price dropped more than 24% in after-hours trading on Thursday.Representatives for ELF Beauty did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, sent outside regular business hours.

Facing the wrath of nature, the school partially drowned in the 2019 floods, causing irreparable damage to its infrastructure, and making it hazardous for students and teachers to occupy the premises.Save this picture! The journey of Rebuilding Resilience began in 2020, when the architects alongside a local NGO decided to intervene through a participatory process with school teachers and students. The school was proposed to be built in two phases, ensuring regular classes during construction while simultaneously facilitating fundraising.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The redesigned school, planned with utmost sensitivity to regional climate and context, incorporates solar passive strategies. Proposed in the northeast corner of the 1-acre site, the built form helps in maximizing the school playground. The school is proposed on stilts to provide the least resistance to floodwaters. The first floor of Phase 1 has three welllit, cross-ventilated classrooms with a North-light roof, alongside a staffroom, girls' restroom, and toilets. These classrooms, look out at Mandakini hill, and lush paddy fields, a visual delight for students. The community kitchen is kept on the ground floor serving midday meals to students. The stilted ground floor plate weaves a multi-functional social space, hosting school activities, community gatherings, medical camps, and awareness drives.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!A locally sourced material palette helped in achieving an unbelievable construction cost of Rs.1200 per sq.ft. (13.5$. per sq.ft), ensuring a low carbon footprint for construction. With a concrete framework, the body of this sustainable school is built in locally baked red bricks, laid in Rat-trap bond. This reduces the brick quantum while providing thermal insulation to classrooms. Brick Jalis at strategic locations act as visual filters and also ensure breeze flows. The filler-slabtechnique has been used for the ground floor, wherein locally crafted earthen disks are inserted in a free-flowing ceiling pattern, reducing concrete quantity while adding vernacular aesthetics.Save this picture!Recycled Indian stone flooring using waste stones sourced for free from local vendors, is used to lay the ground floor, a pattern inspired by the meandering Tansa river. Insulated puff panels for the roof ensure the classrooms stay thermally comfortable throughout the year. Roof-mounted Solar panels make the school net-zero, sand-elf-reliant in its energy needs. The school faade imagined as a biophilic interface has green planters as an important design element, maintained by school students. The surrounding open space has been partially used by students to grow seasonal vegetables, used for midday meals. The students alongside farmer parents contributed to the construction through shramdaan, as hands-on site training of alternative techniques given by Architects, adding to the skills of locals.Save this picture!Saraswati Vidyalaya has now become an exemplar of how rural schools could be reimagined and built sensitively, cost-efficiently, yet aesthetically. Phase 1 has led to an immense social impact, with an increase in student intake, encouraging the underprivileged tribal parents to exercise their right to education.
