• Football Manager 25 has been cancelled
    www.engadget.com
Sports Interactive has officially cancelled Football Manager 25 after its release was delayed by months from the series' usual launch window. In its announcement, the developer said that it made the decision after an extensive discussion with Sega, its publisher, and that it's skipping this version to focus on the next installment instead. Football Manager is a football (or soccer) management SIM game series that typically gets a yearly release. The last one, Football Manager 2024, came out in 2023, and this particular installment was supposed to be released in November last year before it was pushed back to March 2025.The developer explained that it truly believed it would be able to reach the level of quality it was aiming for when it announced the March release date, but it encountered "challenges" that made it unable to reach its goal. Sports Interactive previously said that things were moving slower than it predicted to be able to produce the game it wanted. It was "rushing too much and in danger of compromising [its] usual standards," it added. It sounds like the company got close to being able to release the game, as "many areas" had hit its targets. However, the "overarching player experience and interface" are "not where [the company] need it to be." The developer promised "the biggest technical and visual advancement in the series" with Football Manager 25, and it would not be able to deliver on that if it pushes through with its plan to launch the game this March. It was also unwilling to move the release date again, since the next version is already scheduled for launch later this year. Those who've already pre-ordered the game will get a refund for their purchase. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/football-manager-25-has-been-cancelled-133053048.html?src=rss

  • Meta and UNESCO team up to improve translation AI
    www.engadget.com
Meta has partnered with UNESCO on a new plan to improve translation and speech recognition AI, Techcrunch reported. As part of its Language Technology Partner Program, Meta is seeking collaborators willing to donate at least 10 hours of speech recordings with transcriptions, large written texts (200-plus sentences) and sets of translated sentences. The aim is to focus on "underserved languages, in support of UNESCO's work," Meta wrote in a blog post.So far, Meta and UNESCO have signed on the government of Nunavut, a northern Canadian territory. The aim is to develop translation systems for the Intuit languages used there, Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun. "Our efforts are especially focused on underserved languages, in support of UNESCOs work as part of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages," Meta said.As part of the program, Meta is releasing an open source translation benchmark called BOUQuET a standard test to evaluate performance of AI models that do translation. It'll be composed of sentences "carefully crafted by linguistic experts," and is seeking contributions on a dedicated site.Meta has taken a strong interest in AI translation for both text and speech, a logical move for a company that connects users around the world. Last year, it showed off a tool that uses AI to automatically dub Reels into other languages, complete with lip-sync, promising it would roll out to some creators videos in English and Spanish in the US first. The company has gradually expanded its Meta AI assistant around the world and it's now available in 43 countries and over a dozen languages. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/meta-and-unesco-team-up-to-improve-translation-ai-130050762.html?src=rss

  • LG: No refunds or exchanges for 500,000 electric ranges recalled over fires and pet deathsinstead, customers get a sticker
    www.fastcompany.com
LG Electronics USA is recalling half a million electric ranges that have been involved in at least 28 fires, resulting in numerous injuries and a few pet deaths. But instead of issuing a refund or replacement, the home appliance maker is sending customers warning label stickers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted an alert on Thursday that it received at least 86 reports of unintentional activation of the front-mounted knobs leading to at least five fires, which caused extensive property damage totaling over $340,000 as well as burns and eight minor injuries, with three fires resulting in pet deaths.According to the announcement, customers and their pets can accidentally activate the front-mounted knobs on LG Slide-In Ranges and Freestanding Ranges, potentially causing fires. In response, LG is encouraging consumers to use the ranges Lock Out or Control Lock features, which [lock] the cooktop . . . from being turned on even when the knob is turned, reducing the risk of accidental activation, according to a statement from the company.Id like to clarify that this is not the usual kind of CPSC recall because the affected products have a proven safety feature built in, John Taylor, senior vice president of LG Electronics USA Inc., told Fast Company in a statement.Consumers can find detailed instructions for using the Lock Out/Control Lock features atLGcares.com.Where were the ranges sold?According to the CPSC, the ranges were sold from 2015 to January 2025, for between $1,400 and $2,650, at the following stores:Best BuyCostcoThe Home DepotLowesIn addition, the recall notes the ranges were sold at other appliance stores nationwide and online at LG.com. The model and serial numbers of the affected products are listed here.LG told Fast Company on Friday that for 10 of the 11 models listed, only those units manufactured through 2023, as indicated by serial number, are affected. All units of model LDE4413 are affected. (The serial numbers can be found inside the oven door or storage drawer located on the bottom of the oven.)What should I do if I think my range was recalled?Consumers should contact LG through the companys website for a free warning label and placement instructions, and use the Lock Out/Control Lock function on the range control panel to disable heating elements when the range is not in use.Heres LGs instructional video on how to use the Lock Out/Control Lock features.Consumers should also keep children and pets away from the knobs and not leave objects on the range when its not in use. And before leaving the house or going to bed, check the range knobs to ensure they are off.

  • Report: It takes a $180,000 salary to comfortably afford U.S. childcare
    www.fastcompany.com
The cost of childcare has been climbing precipitously for the past decade, with some families spending about a quarter of their yearly incomeor moreon those expenses. As federal funding and pandemic-era relief has disappeared, many providers have struggled to keep their doors open, making it even more difficult for families to find affordable care.By federal standards, families should only be spending 7% of their annual income on childcare. A new analysis by the National Womens Law Center (NWLC) finds that as of 2025, the average family would need to earn at least $180,000 annually to comfortably afford the national cost of infant care, which is around $12,655. (Childcare costs tend to be steepest for infants and children under the age of two.) In states with a higher cost of living, such as California and New York, the annual income required to ensure that childcare is affordable is upwards of $250,000.The NWLC analysis indicates that, based on the affordability standard set by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), childcare is out of reach for families in every state across the U.S. In South Dakota, a state where the cost of care is below the average, a familys annual income would still need to be nearly $98,000; on the other end is a region such as Washington, D.C., where families need to earn $330,000 annually to easily afford the cost of care for one child.Childcare advocates have long argued that its impossible to address the affordability crisis without public investment and additional federal funding, given the high labor costs associated with this care. Many centers already operate with tight margins, as evidenced by the challenges some providers are currently facing after President Trumps proposed funding freezewhich has since been rescindedderailed payments for those in the Head Start program, which subsidizes childcare costs for low-income families. Some providers have reportedly been unable to pay staff and were forced to temporarily close their doors, and according to the National Head Start Association, nearly 20,000 children and families could be impacted if those programs continue to be unable to access funding.Given Trumps track record, its also possible that childcare providers and parents may have to contend with further cuts to federal programs that help support low-income familiesrather than the additional funding that the childcare industry sorely needs.

  • Forget Cloud Storage This Tiny Thunderbolt 5 SSD Puts 4TB of High-Speed Data in Your Pocket
    www.yankodesign.com
Remember when we OWNED things? Im not talking about houses and cars being affordable, Im talking about a time before the tyranny of subscription fees. You didnt pay monthly fees for the right to see a movie you owned a disc with the movie on it and it belonged to you for your entire life. Your external hard disk (yes, the ones we used so lovingly back in the 2010s) was yours to own it wasnt a cloud subscription you paid to access periodically. Small monthly fees sure made things seem easier when they actually arent and I think were beginning to realize this sooner than later. We create and consume more data now than we ever did which is why owning your own high-storage SSD makes so much sense in 2025.Imagine carrying your entire digital life in your pocketmovies, games, work files, and backupsall accessible at speeds so fast they make cloud storage feel ancient. Thats the promise of the Comet Thunderbolt 5 Portable SSD, a tiny but ridiculously powerful external drive that redefines storage as we know it. With transfer speeds of up to 7,000MB/s, this thing moves data at speeds so fast your gigabit internet would feel like dial-up.Designer: CometClick Here to Buy Now: $129 $199 (35% off) Hurry! Only 6 of 20 units. To put that speed into perspective, transferring a full 4K movie with Thunderbolt 5 takes just five seconds. It takes the average human 1 minute to reach this sentence, which means you could have transferred 20 movies in this time. Compared to a standard USB 3.2 Gen2 SSD, this drive is seven times faster, which means that whether youre editing 8K footage, rendering complex 3D models, or moving terabytes of raw photos, your workflow wont just be smootheritll feel instantaneous. The highlight of the Comet is that it helps you reclaim ownership of your data and your storage. The tiny device is roughly the size of a stack of credit cards, but boasts storage starting at 1TB and going to 4TB, giving you enough room to store hundreds of AAA games, thousands of high-resolution photos, or an entire library of 4K movies. The 4TB model? Thats basically a Premium Google Drive subscription in your pocket, minus the fees and the agony of waiting for downloads on a half-decent internet connection. If youre the kind of person who hoards media like a digital dragon, this drive lets you keep everything offline, secure, and instantly accessible. The Comet SSD works seamlessly whether youre on a Windows PC, Mac, Linux system, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or a professional editing rig. While Thunderbolt 5 enables its top-tier speeds, it also plays nice with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and even older USB 3.2 standards, giving you backward compatibility so that the SSD works perfectly with all your devices. The SSD might be tiny but it isnt fragile. The IP65-rated chassis is resistant to water, dust, and drops from up to two meters, meaning you can toss it in a bag, drop it on the floor, or even get caught in the rain without losing your data. The fanless aluminum casing keeps it cool under load, ensuring long-term reliability even when transferring terabytes of data. And the best part? The price. $129 gets you the 1TB model, while the top-tier 4TB version goes for $279a fraction of what some premium SSDs cost. We used to own things the Comet SSD brings that era back by giving you ownership of your storage without the fees, without the cloud, and without the possibility of it being hacked/leaked or worse, monetized for ads.Click Here to Buy Now: $129 $199 (35% off) Hurry!
