• A 29-year-old small-business owner says entrepreneurship shouldn't be 'the ultimate goal for everyone' and describes the challenges, including professional loneliness
    www.businessinsider.com
Jack Schrupp left teaching and coaching to grow his protein powder company, Drink Wholesome. The business, which began as a side project to address his own dietary needs, brought in seven figures in 2024.Schrupp likes that entrepreneurship offers freedom, but it can feel isolating and lonely at times.Jack Schrupp fell into entrepreneurship more so than he sought it out."I had this plan to teach for a while and then become an administrator and possibly even head of a school. That was a dream of mine," the former French teacher told Business Insider. But when his side project making and selling protein powder for sensitive stomachs started to take off, juggling the business with life as a boarding school teacher and coach became impossible."It turned me into a fried human that didn't have enough time to brush his teeth," said Schrupp, who started making his own protein powder in college when he couldn't find a product that agreed with his stomach. He blended his early concoctions on top of the mini-fridge in his dorm room and, eventually, partnered with a granola company to produce his recipe in bulk. Schrupp, center, spent years teaching and coaching before transitioning to running his business full-time. Courtesy of Jack Schrupp It turned out that other people were interested in an easy-to-digest protein powder. He sold through his first batch of inventory, which cost him $20,000, and started offering more flavors and products. As the company grew, so did his stress levels."I was doing too much, and I felt like I wasn't doing anything well or, as well as I could have and that was discouraging," he said. "I felt like I was just spread too thin. My life was very rich and rewarding, but I wasn't sleeping enough. I was very stressed."Schrupp, 27 at the time, had to decide between the two career paths. He chose his company, Drink Wholesome, and quit teaching at the end of the 2023 school year. Sometimes, he wonders if it was the right call. The challenges that come with entrepreneurship that not everyone talks aboutSchrupp says that life as an entrepreneur versus life as a boarding school teacher "couldn't look more different."As a "dorm parent," he lived in the same building as students. He didn't have "a whole lot of privacy," he said, but, at the same time, being surrounded by students and other teachers was energizing. "I loved teaching. That was my life, that was my community, that's what grounded me and made sense to me." Schrupp's sister, Tessa, joined Drink Wholesome in 2023. Courtesy of Jack Schrupp As the owner of a small business with one employee his sister, who works remotely from the opposite side of the country he now spends most days by himself. He lives and works from his home in Hanover. It's a productive setup, and he considers himself "pretty relaxed," he said. "But it's professionally lonely."Running your own business can feel isolating, "especially if it's a hard journey, which it often is," said Schrupp. "You feel like you are doing it alone with no one to turn to for help or advice. So, I wouldn't say that entrepreneurship is like a hack or should be the ultimate goal for everyone. If you're ever considering it, you should definitely take into account the loneliness that comes along with being an entrepreneur."It's also harder to set boundaries when you're building a company versus working for an employer."I have the potential to work way more. I could probably work all day, every single day," he said. "There's no end to growing a business because, it's growing, right? It's ever-evolving. And if you're someone like me who is constantly looking at it with a critical eye and looking for ways to improve it, then you'll never finish your workday."That said, he recognizes the perks, such as the freedom that comes with being your own boss: "I will say, it would be hard for me to start working for someone else, just because I do have almost unadulterated freedom. I'm accountable to no one."For now, at 29, Schrupp is committed to continuing to grow his brand. He feels obligated to provide a good product to his customer base."I am motivated now more than ever to create a robust and long-term business because Drink Wholesome really helps people. We're pretty involved in a lot of people's health and well-being," he said. "But I don't know if the current iteration of the business is a great fit for me in the long term, and that is something that I wrestle with often."He's learned the importance of consistently evaluating his relationship to his business."You have to ask yourself, as an entrepreneur, what you want to get out of the business. Because if you're not happy and you're not fulfilled, the business probably isn't going to do well," said Schrupp. "Having that conversation often and then making changes as needed is a really important part of the process. There's no playbook. You can't watch a YouTube tutorial on that. It's something you have to learn."

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience.""All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional 5 days of service," it continues, but for some that's not enough."Wow 5 whole days" one user commented, while another asked for the company to explain what happened and how Sony will avoid it happening in the future."Should give out a game or something; thats nothing," another said. Some had hoped Sony would offer a larger compensation patch as it did in 2011, but the circumstances aren't really the same. • PlayStation PSN finally restored as fans say 'sorry isn't enough' after mystery outage

The outage saw players unable to log into their console. And users trying to gain access were just met by a message saying that the PlayStation Network is undergoing maintenanceTech08:13, 09 Feb 2025Users trying to gain access werejust met by a message saying that the PlayStation Network is undergoing maintenance (stock)(Image: SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)PlayStation PSN was finally restored last night after nearly 24 hours, but fans still weren't happy. The PlayStation outage saw players unable to log into their console, with access patchy across the network. Users trying to get onto the system were met by a message explaining that the PlayStation Network is undergoing maintenance. PlayStation Store (the digital one), and the PlayStation Direct website (the company's physical store) both had issues, while PlayStation Video was also down. The result was that gamers couldn't log in and play their games on one of the busiest days of the week. And throughout the outage it simply admitted that "some users might be experiencing issues with PSN", and little else.It was announced at 11.58pm on Saturday night that normal service had been resumed (stock)(Image: Bloomberg via Getty Images)So when it was finally announced at 11.58pm last night (February 8), on the Ask PlayStation X account that the network was back up and running again, users were a little miffed at the lack of communication throughout the downtime. The post read: "PSN has been restored. You should be able to access online features without any problems now." As well as a link to find out more details. It was signed off with: "Sorry for the inconvenience!" But that wasn't enough for many who made their feelings felt in their thousands. The lack of communication throughout the outage was frustrating for many users (stock)(Image: NurPhoto via Getty Images)One wrote: "Now... explanations? tomorrow? And how are the people affected going to be compensated... is what everyone might want to know."Another said: "Inconvenience is one thing. The lack of updates and communication was really disappointing."A third added: "Yeah no ;Sorry; is not enough! Without any explanation as to why it happened? You expect to us your loyal customers to just simply accept that? @Sony should be held accountable for this inconvenience to millions! You owe us at least an explanation as to why network was down."Some users wanted compensation for the inconvenience (stock)While a fourth dissatisfied user shared: "Inconvenience? You didn't tell us anything, knowing it is the weekend and prime game time for many. Lots of people had planned game time with their friends. You couldn't be bothered to say anything other than that you were aware of the problem. Shame."Article continues belowA number of users queried if any kind of compensation would be made available, with anything from free games to one year of PS Plus being suggested. As frustrating as it is, the outage of 2011 will take some beating. A data breach saw users' payment details leak, with data for over 77 million PSN users exposed. The network was down for 23 days, with Sony attempting to make it up to players with free games. The whole incident reportedly cost Sony more than $170 million in costs during the PlayStation 3 generation.

AI is the future of video games whether we want it or not Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished February 9, 2025 9:00amUpdated February 9, 2025 9:08am The game developers of the future? (Credits: Getty Images)A reader is convinced that generative AI will be the most important tool for making next gen video games, despite the many legal and ethnical issues.AI generated content is the future of media, the sooner we accept it the better. We teeter at the brink of the next generation of gaming. The PlayStation 6, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox 5 console are all on the way in the next two years.I wrote this article just over one year ago.Unfortunately, my rather bleak outlook on the collapse of a bloated games industry has been pretty accurate.Studio closures despite successful game launches, multiple layoffs for large companies, financial crises for massive developers. This, however, has also started the snowball to my second prediction. That is, many new indie studios and interesting new game concepts being given room to thrive.AAA is no longer the focal point of a console sales pitch.Everything is an Xbox.Nintendo is (technologically) a full generation behind but has outsold everything.PlayStation has Halo?!The corelation between being all powerful and being a success has shattered over the last 10 years. Now we look to the future. What can gaming do to cope with the exponentially growing demands of making a quality game?I believe the future lies in AI generated content. When I say this, I dont mean dubious copyright infringement or dodgy hand rendering. I mean using the power of AI in consoles to change how we play. There is already a foundation of artificial enhancement across gaming history. Some AI support is fairly standard, such as making CPU opponents tougher when you change the difficulty settings in game. Others are more nuanced or underdeveloped.NPCs: AI can be used to create non-player characters that act intelligently and creatively, mimicking human actions.Graphics: AI can be used to create photorealistic lighting, shadows, and reflections.Gameplay: AI-powered game engines can adapt gameplay based on player behaviour.Dialogue: AI can be used to create first drafts of dialogue, which can be selected from and polished by scriptwriters.Voice acting: AI can be used to create AI generated voices for prototyping.Motion capture: AI can be used to translate the movements and expressions of actors into animations for characters in games.Smart opponents: AI can be used to create AI powered opponents for players to battle.Streamers even use ChatGPT enabled mods to allow their fans to change spoken dialogue live in game (often with hilarious consequences). The AI content of the future, in my opinion, will be far grander.Say you want to watch 1999 blockbuster The Matrix. You turn on your AI-flix app and select the movie. The app then gives you the option to enhance/customise your viewing experience. So instead of Keanu Reeves in the starring role of Neo you select a young Danny DeVito. Throw in Jet Li as Agent Smith and Dame Judi Dench as Morpheus too while youre at it. [This would be super illegal GC]Finally, instead of pounding techno music and leather jackets you want classical music and formal wear. Then you select play and your Great Gatsby-esque masterpiece plays out just as you dreamt it would.Dame Judi standing in a full ballgown saying Show me after DeVito proclaims, I know Kung Fu! brings a tear to your eye. However, lets go back to gaming advances we could see:AI generated content from contextual/reactive dialogue using actors voices that no longer have to read 5,000 new lines for each expansion.Classic and dynamic commentary teams, on sporting games, from bygone eras. No more muting the same 15 lines of drab, lifeless dialogue.In-game content generated in the moment, without needing to wait for DLC to release.Huge, copyright purchasable, libraries of people stored for future use like a Shutterstock of voice and identity.Actors will never have to work again and still get royalties every time someone wants to see or hear them in their favourite media. [The current strikes are precisely because they get no royalties with AI GC]Literally infinite, cost-free content to watch/hear/play at the click of a button.More TrendingYes, its 100% an Orwellian nightmare, but it is the future.By reader Jay Parry Is AI behind Xboxs claims about a next gen leap?(Photo by Andrea Verdelli/Getty Images)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot.
