• Score a Massive 20TB Seagate External Hard Drive for Only $229.99 at Best Buy
    www.ign.com
If you're shopping for a huge amount of local storage, here's a deal that beats pretty much anything I saw during Black Friday. For a limited time, Best Buy is offering this massive Seagate Expansion 20TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive for only $229.99 shipped. That averages out to a mere $11.50 per TB of storage.Seagate Expansion 20TB Desktop Hard DriveSeagate Expansion 20TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard DriveThe Seagate Expansion boasts a single 20TB disk drive so it's no bigger than any other desktop hard drive. It features a USB 3.0 interface with roughly up to 100MB/s transfer speed, which is in line with what you'd expect from a traditional hard drive. It also includes recovery software and automatic recognition of both Windows and Mac computers.Although SSDs are all the rage these days, traditional hard drives are still the superior choice for long term storage. For one, hard drives are significantly less expensive. Compared to this hard drive's $11.50/TB cost, a solid state drive would run you at least $50/TB. Hard drives also have a much higher maximum capacity. Consumer SSDs generally cap out at 8TB, which pales in comparison to the 20TB capacity of this drive. Perhaps most importantly, although SSDs can equal HDDs in terms of lifespan, it's much easier to recover data from a HDD than SSD if either one fails.Looking for more alternatives? • Agatha All Along, Shogun, Cobra Kai, and More: SCAD TVfest 2025 Round Up
    www.denofgeek.com
The pop culture calendar isnt exactly hurting for worthwhile festivals, conventions, and junkets. Including the usual suspects like San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), New York Comic Con (NYCC), South by Southwest (SXSW), and Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), theres a host of acronymic events that Den of Geek and other outlets have made a habit of covering over the years. One thing many of these cons have in common, however, is that theyre not located in Hollywood. And by Hollywood, of course, we mean Atlanta, Georgia.Blessed with a temperate climate, thriving industry, and local governments that are amenable to filming tax breaks, the Peach States capital city has become a major production center for film and television. Already the long-time home for Turner properties like TNT, TBS, and Adult Swim, Atlanta has increasingly made way for other heavy hitters like Marvel and Netflix in recent years. And to capitalize on that increased Hollywood presence, major festivals are starting to make their way as well.Hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)s Atlanta campus, SCAD TVfest has been bringing folks from the TV industry together for more than a decade. This years edition welcomed in everyone from Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer to Shguns Hiroyuki Sanada to The Duffer Brothers of Stranger Things fame. Den of Geek was there through it all, prowling around red carpets and panels to get some insight from the creatives behind our favorite shows.Jac SchaefferAgatha All AlongAgatha All Along star Patti LuPone has already said all that needs said about the potential of a second season. Its not happening, folks! Thankfully, Agatha and WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer was still happy to speak with us about her two beloved Marvel shows, which can now be best described as occupying the Ralph Bohner-verse.It was my personal mission to get Ralph Bohner back on the chessboard, Schaeffer said. I was like Im not doing the show unless Evan Peters is in his trailer. The Agatha and WandaVision scribe went on to discuss her favorite Kathryn Hahn moment, working with the Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez on The Ballad of The Witches Road, and her excitement for the upcoming Vision Quest series.Hiroyuki SanadaShogunLegendary Japanese actor and producer Hiroyuki Sanada was on site at SCAD TVfest to receive a well-earned Lifetime Achievement Award. Before that, however, he stopped by the red carpet to share some details on the unexpected but much hyped second season of FX hit Shgun. We used the whole novel part already. So we have no novel in the season two, but we have real history and models, Sanada said. We know what happened in the history. So you keep that taste of season one but were going to create original entertainment, fictional entertainment, not just the history book.(L-R) Justin Spitzer, Allison Tolman, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper and Eric LedginSt. Denis MedicalEven at a festival devoted to honoring the best of television, theres a certain level of confusion as to what a TV show even is. Check out this dispatch from the Den of Geek newsletter in which one attendee doesnt know whether the aforementioned Shgun is a TV series or not. Theres no confusion when it comes to NBC sitcom St. Denis Medical, however. This well-received hospital mockumentary is unmistakably a television program and a good one at that, taking home the Breakthrough Cast Award at SCAD TVfest.I grew up in Korea and I learned colloquial English watching Friends. NBC is obviously iconic for their comedy. It feels crazy [to be a part of this], Serena actress Kahyun Kim said. Matt Duffer, Caleb McLaughlin and Ross DufferStranger ThingsThe main event of SCAD TVfest Day One on February 5 was an evening panel and screening with Stranger Things creators and Variety Showrunner Awardwinners Matt and Ross Duffer. Though the audience at SCADshow theater was noticeably disappointed to discover that the screening was merely of a previously-released season 4 episode (and not unseen footage from the upcoming fifth and final season), the Duffers made the experience worth everyones while with keen insights about the TV industry and some season 5 teases.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Among the season 5 revelations was that VFX and editing work is ahead of schedule and the Duffers are confident that the shows swansong will arrive in 2025 as originally planned. Additionally, they clarified that any Stranger Things spinoffs would not feature existing characters, scuttling the fans dreams of a Steve and Dustin buddy comedy. The Duffers also swatted down expectations of working within a pre-existing franchise like Star Wars or Marvel. If we have any chips we can cash in from Stranger Things it should be something original, Matt Duffer said, before adding: And if thats a total dud well do IP.(L-R) Missy Laney, Adele Supreme Williams and Dominique BraudOh My GodYes! A Series of Extremely Relatable CircumstancesAs you can probably tell from its lengthy, almost Fall Out Boy song c. 2005-esque title, Oh My GodYes! A Series of Extremely Relatable Circumstances is an Adult Swim joint. Created by indie comic figure Adele Supreme Williams, Oh My GodYes! etc. etc. follows the misadventures of three best friends as they navigate womanhood in a near-future South Central L.A. Though the show has the usual Adult Swim aesthetic down pat, its also, unbelievably, the networks first series to feature a Black woman protagonist. Its an honor, Williams told Den of Geek of her shows unlikely place in cable history. But Id be lying if I said there wasnt an immense amount of pressure. And if I can be even more vulnerable: its a little scary. You get a little in your head about how the audience will respond to the work.Still, Williams is excited to see how far that experience can go. There are so many characters that show up in this season that could have their own entire episode, Williams said. What I love about [fellow Adult Swim series] Smiling Friends is all these random and tertiary characters they bring into the world and as the story goes along they subvert your expectations. I love the show. And I see [Oh My GodYes] as going on for a few more seasons. Fingers crossed for sure.(L-R) Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh HealdCobra KaiAfter six seasons of wholesome martial arts mayhem, The Karate Kid spinoff Cobra Kai is set to ride off into the sunset with its final batch of episodes premiering February 13 on Netflix. Its been quite the journey for the YouTube Red survivor and its creators (Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald) and some of its cast (Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, and Jacob Bertrand) stopped by the SCAD TVfest red carpet to discuss it all, including whether any crucial Karate Kid characters never made it into Cobra Kais six seasons. We always tried to tell a modern story and if there was a fun, organic way to bring the original characters back, we did it that way, Hurwitz said. But believe me, we know every single actor that we didnt get, and its either because there wasnt the right story for them or theyre just not in acting mode anymore.Noah CentineoThe Recruit2025 has been quite the year for Noah Centineoand were not even through February yet. The To All The Boys trilogy star kicked off the calendar with a double-feature on Netflix, headlining The Recruit season 2 and popping up for a not-so-surprise cameo in XO, Kitty season 2. As Centineo told Den of Geek, the South Korea filming location for both projects may have been more than a coincidence. Youd have to ask Netflix, Centineo joked. I think maybe it was by design on their end or it was just a really happy coincidence. The team over at Netflix and ACE [Entertainment] realized I was going to be over there for The Recruit. They hey hit me up and I said Of course, I would love to.'Fresh off winning SCADs Distinguished Performer Award, Centineo is gearing up for another season of The Recruit. I have no idea whats gonna happen in season three. The only thing I know is that it needs to blow season two and season one out of the water.(L-R) D. W. Moffett, Andra Reeve-Rabb, Samiya Allen-Graham, Ian Whitt, Erica Muradi, Aria Brown, Drake Aasen, Kane Innis, Jocelyn Shelfo and Mark TymchyshynOne particularly charming aspect of SCAD TVfest is the SCAD Atlanta campus itself and the involvement of many of the colleges students. Aspiring filmmakers, performers, and artisans not only work many of the panels, junkets, and events, but occasionally get to highlight their own work. One such example is the SCAD-created sitcom Lodged. Set in an Aspen ski lodge, the series finds a young entrepreneur trying to convert the space into a swanky resort. Its a real-ass TV show. But its also a learning opportunity for its cast and crew.Sitcom is a good blend of theater and film. And for me personally, [Lodged] came at a perfect time where I had gone my whole life basically doing theater, and now in the last couple years, Im transitioning to film and television. This bridges the gap, Drake Aasen said.SCAD just offers such a variety of opportunities from improv clubs to sitcoms to short films to plays to everything. They give us three day weekends, so we really have the time to collaborate on projects and work together. Jocelyn Shelfo said.Walker ScobellPercy Jackson and the OlympiansAt 16 years old, Percy Jackson and the Olympians star Walker Scobell isnt quite old enough to even be a SCAD student yet but that didnt stop him from receiving TVfests Rising Star Award. Scobell spoke with Den of Geek about the Percy Jackson season 2 moment hes most excited for people to see. What we did in episode four with CharybdisandScylla, he said. I dont want to spoil anything but this is probably the biggest [episode]. Its its own movie to be honest. That was the first table read we did where we hadnt read it beforehand. They wanted us to all experience it for the first time with them.

  • Five new iPhones are launching this year, heres whats coming
    9to5mac.com
Apple has a lot of successful products, but its biggest by far is the iPhone. This year, Apple has five new iPhone models coming, heres what to expect from each one.iPhone SE 4Apples budget-friendly iPhone will score some major upgrades any day now in its first update since 2022.For starters, the iPhone SE is losing the Home Button and adopting an edge-to-edge OLED display with a notch. The new SE will also boast several features of the flagship iPhone 16, such as:A18 chip8GB of RAMApple Intelligence support48MP main cameraUSB-C portWere also expecting Apples first in-house 5G modem to debut in the iPhone SE 4, rounding out an especially compelling budget option.iPhone 17 AirThis fall, Apple will launch four new iPhone 17 models. The arrival of four new iPhones each fall has become standard practice, but this year one of those models will carry big changes. The iPhone Plus is going away, replaced by the iPhone 17 Air.iPhone 17 Air will prioritize form over function. It will have specs similar to the base iPhone 17, such as the A19 chip (not A19 Pro) and 8GB of RAM (not the 12GB coming to the Pro line). But it will demand a higher price point for its ultra-thin, futuristic design. The 17 Air will be Apples thinnest iPhone ever, with a unique new display size that could be a perfect compromise between the two Pro models. Two more expected Air features: Apples in-house 5G modem, and a high-refresh display.Following years of very minor iPhone design changes, iPhone 17 Air will offer an exciting new look that could make this years iPhone decision especially difficult.iPhone 17 ProWhile iPhone 17 Air will be the shiny, exciting new thing, Apples not slouching with its Pro line. The iPhone 17 Pro will offer the same 6.3-inch display as the 16 Pro, but come with some design changes of its own. For example, its getting a redesigned frame with aluminum replacing titanium, and a larger, rectangular camera bump.Internally, iPhone 17 Pro will feature:A19 Pro chip12GB of RAM, the most ever in an iPhoneQualcomms 5G modemThere will almost certainly be some nice rear camera upgrades to accompany the redesigned camera bump. But for the first time in a while, the selfie cameras getting some love too.Across the entire iPhone 17 lineup, Apples upgrading the front camera from 12MP to 24MP for improved performance.iPhone 17 Pro MaxAs always, iPhone 17 Pro Max will get all the best features of the smaller iPhone 17 Pro, but with some small perks such as better battery life thanks to the larger size. One rumor says the 17 Pro Max will be getting a smaller Dynamic Island than every other model. Its unclear how much smaller, but were especially interested to see if this change corresponds with Face ID finally being embedded in the displaythus enabling the smaller cutout. Note, however, that a separate report recently cast doubt on the Dynamic Island changing. Its possible the Pro Max model will also have some camera advantages not found in the smaller 17 Pro, but so far there have been no rumors on that front.iPhone 17Rounding out the 2025 lineup is Apples base iPhone 17.Last falls iPhone 16 was one of the strongest base models in years. Well have to wait and see if that happens again this year, but heres a general rundown of what to expect:24MP front cameraA19 chip8GB of RAMthe same 6.1-inch display as iPhone 16There will surely be some other details on the base model that emerge in the months ahead, but for now, it looks like the device will have some stiff competition not only from the Air and Pro line, but from the cheaper iPhone SE 4.New iPhones in 2025: wrap-upWhether youre interested in the high end iPhone 17 Pro Max, the budget-friendly iPhone SE, or something altogether new like the iPhone 17 Air, 2025 looks set to be a strong year for the iPhone.Which new iPhone do you expect to buy this year? • 9to5Neural: Elon Musk tries to buy OpenAI, Sam Altman declines but says theyll take Twitter
    9to5mac.com
Welcome to9to5Neural.AI moves fast. We help you keep up.Last week everyone drank a big glass of DeepSeek with a side of R1. Refreshing as that was, the world of AI has started to calm WAIT, WHAT?! Elon Musk is trying to buy OpenAI? Here we go again WSJ: Elon Musk-led group makes $97.4 billion bid for control of OpenAIJessica Toonkel and Berber Jin exclusively report for The Wall Street Journal that a consortium of investors led by Elon Musk is offering $97.4 billion to buy the nonprofit that controls OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.Musks attorney, Marc Toberoff, said he submitted the bid to OpenAIs board of directors Monday. The unsolicited offer adds a major complication to Altmans carefully laid plans for OpenAIs future, including converting it to a for-profit company and spending up to $500 billion on AI infrastructure through a joint venture called Stargate. He and Musk are already fighting in court over the direction of OpenAI.Its time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was, Musk said in a statement provided by Toberoff. We will make sure that happens. The unsolicited bid comes as OpenAI shifts from a nonprofit to a for-profit firm led by Sam Altman. Musk originally helped fund OpenAI but left after being denied control of the company. Then OpenAI took the world by storm when it made the ChatGPT-3 chatbot public, introducing the world to large language models and a new era of generative AI.More recently, Musk has sued OpenAI and called the company ClosedAI. He also started xAI, a competing artificial intelligence firm, which integrates with and learns from X (formerly Twitter).Speaking of X (formerly Twitter), OpenAIs Altman responded to the news with a post (formerly tweet) that says no thanks, but OpenAI is (surely jokingly) willing to buy Twitter for 10% of Elons takeover bid of OpenAI. Twitter, of course, is the original name for Musks X platform. As noted X user @greg16676935420 said in a profound response to Altmans post, sharts fired. In other news, ChatGPT released its o3-mini cost-effective reasoning model and is finalizing the design for its first custom chip.Google released Gemini 2.0 Flash to show off its latest in reasoning models, Perplexity gave Gemini 2.0 Flash to Pro subscribers, and Microsoft gave OpenAIs o1 reasoning model to Copilot customers for free.Meanwhile, ChatGPT pulled ahead of DeepSeek in App Store rankings, ChatGPT usage is at an all-time high and climbing, and the ChatGPT app had a design change that some have criticized. OpenAI also borrowed from DeepSeek to sorta reveal the o3-mini chain of thought process, although its not nearly as transparent. Otherwise, nothing major happened except OpenAI unveiling and releasing deep research for ChatGPT Pro users after the operator agent feature seemed to fall flat. While operator tries to do things for you in its own little OpenAI web browser, deep research automates extensive online searches and writes a report based on a given prompt. Deep research is OpenAIs next agent that can do work for you independentlyyou give it a prompt, and ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst. Powered by a version of the upcoming OpenAI o3 model thats optimized for web browsing and data analysis, it leverages reasoning to search, interpret, and analyze massive amounts of text, images, and PDFs on the internet, pivoting as needed in reaction to information it encounters. The ability to synthesize knowledge is a prerequisite for creating new knowledge. For this reason, deep research marks a significant step toward our broader goal of developing AGI, which we have long envisioned as capable of producing novel scientific research. All that does seem worth more than $97.4 billion, but Musks attorney says the wannabe takeover group is willing to outbid any competing offers for OpenAI control.More on the latest in AI developments in the next edition of9to5Neural only on 9to5Mac! • Tesla Driver Issues Warning After His Cybertruck Totals Itself on "Full Self-Driving" Mode
    futurism.com
The owner of a Tesla Cybertruck had a terrifying crash while using the carmaker's infamous "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) feature. In a now-viral thread on X-formerly-Twitter, Florida-based owner Jonathan Challinger "crashed into a curb and then a light post" after failing to "merge out of a lane that was ending." His vehicle "made no attempt to slow down or turn until it had already hit the curb."Challinger used the opportunity to issue a warning"Big fail on my part, obviously," he tweeted. "Don't make the same mistake I did. Pay attention. It can happen.""It is easy to get complacent now don't," he added.Puzzlingly, Challinger also took the opportunity to praise Tesla for "engineering the best passive safety in the world."For years now, regulators have been investigating Tesla's driver assistance software, finding last year that owners like Challinger are often lulled into a false sense of security, in large part due to Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk's woefully misleading marketing.Musk has promised that autonomous driving will be realized "next year" every single year for over a decade now.But reality has struggled to catch up. Tesla currently still maintains that its FSD software requires drivers to be engaged and ready to take over at all times. In practice, drivers like Challinger often zone out. Over the years, FSD and its overarching Autopilot suite have been linked to hundreds of crashes and dozens of deaths and have been implicated in countless lawsuits. The timing of Challinger's easily avoided collision is especially noteworthy, considering Musk has promised that an "unsupervised" version of FSD will be made available later this year.Challinger's comments also highlight a bizarre and difficult-to-reconcile loyalty to Tesla's brand and its mercurial CEO."I do have the dashcam footage," he wrote in his tweet. " I want to get it out there as a PSA that it can happen, even on v13, but I'm hesitant because I don't want the attention and I don't want to give the bears/haters any material.""Spread my message and help save others from the same fate or far worse," he added.Challinger's controversial account of the collision had other netizens shaking their heads."It's completely wild to me that the car's own built-in paid software totals an $80k vehicle and the owner's response is to say "thank you Tesla, the passive safety is so good," one Reddit user wrote in response. "Feels like satire, and yet here we are...""I dont understand how on current versions of FSD a person is able to look away from the road long enough to drive straight into a pole," another user wrote. "I can barely shoulder check a lane change without the eye tracking nagging at me. And its at night too so its not like they had sunglasses on."The latest incident highlights some glaring shortcomings of the tech and a baffling level of trust on the part of Tesla drivers.Share This Article

  • One of Elon Musks DOGE Staffers Used to Sell Ketamine Professionally
    futurism.com
Image by Getty / FuturismTreatmentsAs the staff of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) makes headlines for moving fast and breaking things, a deeper look into their backgrounds reveals that one used to hawk a drug the billionaire has a history of using. As theWashington Post reports, 36-year-old DOGE lackey Alexandra Beynon previously spent her days as head of engineering at the online ketamine therapy company Mindbloom before taking a new gig to meddle at the Department of Education.Cofounded by the DOGE engineer's husband, Dylan Beynon, in 2018, Mindbloom bills itself as offering "guided at-home ketamine therapy to transform your mental health," which is telehealth speak for delivering the horse tranquilizer right to your front door.To be fair, Beynon's former employer seems to be among the safer telehealth sellers of ketamine and other psychedelic wares, contributing to multiple large-scale studies that found doctor-supervised use of the drugs to be safe and fast-acting as a treatment for depression and anxiety. To that end, Mindbloom's cofounder told the New York Times that the company denies about 35 percent of people seeking at-home ketamine treatment, generally due to documented issues with substance abuse, or in some cases hypertension.Still, there's ample room for abuse of the powerful dissociative. In 2023, a study commissioned by All Points North, a Colorado addiction treatment center, found that 55 percent of 2,000 respondents surveyed about at-home ketamine treatment for mental health reported that they'd accidentally or purposefully misused the drug.Mindbloom wasn't named in that study, but APN CEO Noah Nordheimer suggested that companies in the at-home psychedelic space "far too often take a backseat when it comes to the therapy aspect, often leaving patients to fend for themselves."Using ketamine or any other psychedelic for therapeutic purposes is, as any so-called "psychonaut" knows, a long-standing practice. While it's great that for-profit endeavors like Mindbloom are contributing to the growing body of research about the safety and efficacy of these substances, the fact remains that these drugs are powerful and easily misused including by Musk himself. After years of rumors of his drug use and erratic behavior alarming insiders at his companies, Musk conceded last year that he did take ketamine in a bid to treat depression, opining that his companies were doing so well that "from an investor standpoint... I should keep taking it.""There are times when I have sort of a... negative chemical state in my brain, like depression I guess, or depression thats not linked to any negative news, and ketamine is helpful for getting one out of the negative frame of mind," Musk said, adding that was prescribed by an "actual, real doctor" and that he used a "small amount once every other week or something like that."Musk added that he's "almost always" sober when he posts a contention we're not entirely sure we believe. There's also an issue with a government employee selling ketamine, even if it's for therapeutic purposes: the stuff isn't approved by the Food and Drug Administration for mental health purposes, which puts companies like Mindbloom on very shaky ground with regards to federal law. Before Donald Trump took back the White House, federal workers used to have to take drug tests and pass exhaustive background checks to get even minimal levels of security clearance checks that barred cannabis use, much less the grey-legal sale of Schedule III drugs like "Special K."Apparently, that sort of thing doesn't matter in Musk's brave new world though drug peddling isn't exactly new for the Trump White House.More on government drug plugs: Trump Said We Should Kill Drug Dealers. Today, the best baby monitors offer Wi-Fi, apps for viewing on your phone and high-definition screens that come with the camera. I wasn't able to use the wall mount since there wasn't an appropriate space to place it near the pack 'n play, so I used the table stand instead. The cord on this monitor is on the shorter side, which also posed a challenge on where I could place the camera, but that is simply an issue with my living space. If you prefer to have your monitor on a stand, you have that option as well, but it comes at an additional cost ($49.95).One of the challenges I faced when setting this monitor up was getting the handheld monitor to connect to Wi-Fi. Eventually, I got it to work, but a feature that stood out to me was that you had the option to use the monitor with or without Wi-Fi. If you don't use it with Wi-Fi, you can connect the camera and handheld monitor together instead. This is a well-thought-out idea since it allows you to use it anywhere, and even if the Wi-Fi goes out, it is still functional. I downloaded the app so I could compare the difference between how the handheld monitor displays the image versus on the smartphone. I found the app to be easy to use and set up. You can also set it up with a tablet if you prefer. I also liked how you could zoom in and out and adjust the view on the phone. The one thing I found unclear was how to take screenshots or videos, but I eventually realized that it was a small arrow icon on the right-hand side. If you want to be able to use this feature, you need to grant the app full access to your photo gallery. Additionally, the video and photo icon controls the two-way microphone, nightlight and sound machine option on the monitor.VTech provides a sleep analysis on your child, but it only works if you have it mounted over the sleep space, so I wasnt able to take advantage of this feature. There is also a rewind option on the app, but I couldn't figure out how to use it, so I wish that had been clearer. Another way this camera is versatile is that you can use it as your baby enters toddlerhood and set up "danger zones." So if your curious toddler is in an area they shouldn't be in, you will get alerted. Similar to the other baby monitor apps, you can customize your settings to receive alerts when the baby cries, wakes up or falls asleep, warning detections if the baby rolls over and more. If you're looking for a versatile baby monitor that you can access from just about any device, add the V-Care monitor to your baby registry.

Wirestock, Inc./Alamy Stock PhotoA year ago AlphaGeometry, an artificial-intelligence (AI) problem solver created by Google DeepMind, surprised the world by performing at the level of silver medallists in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a prestigious competition that sets tough maths problems for gifted high-school students. The DeepMind team now says the performance of its upgraded system, AlphaGeometry2, has surpassed the level of the average gold medallist. The results are described in a preprint on the arXiv.I imagine it wont be long before computers are getting full marks on the IMO, says Kevin Buzzard, a mathematician at Imperial College London. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. Geometry demands specific skills of an AI, because competitors must provide a rigorous proof for a statement about geometric objects on the plane. In July, AlphaGeometry2 made its public debut alongside a newly unveiled system, AlphaProof, which DeepMind developed for solving the non-geometry questions in the IMO problem sets.Mathematical languageAlphaGeometry is a combination of components that include a specialized language model and a neuro-symbolic system one that does not train by learning from data like a neural network but has abstract reasoning coded in by humans. The team trained the language model to speak a formal mathematical language, which makes it possible to automatically check its output for logical rigour and to weed out the hallucinations, the incoherent or false statements that AI chatbots are prone to making. For AlphaGeometry2, the team made several improvements, including the integration of Googles state-of-the-art large language model, Gemini. The team also introduced the ability to reason by moving geometric objects around the plane such as moving a point along a line to change the height of a triangle and solving linear equations. The system was able to solve 84% of all geometry problems given in IMOs in the past 25 years, compared with 54% for the first AlphaGeometry. (Teams in India and China used different approaches last year to achieve gold-medal-level performance in geometry, but on a smaller subset of IMO geometry problems.)The authors of the DeepMind paper write that future improvements of AlphaGeometry will include dealing with maths problems that involve inequalities and non-linear equations, which will be required to to fully solve geometry.Rapid progressThe first AI system to achieve a gold-medal score for the overall test could win a US$5-million award called the AI Mathematical Olympiad Prize although that competition requires systems to be open-source, which is not the case for DeepMind.Buzzard says he is not surprised by the rapid progress made both by DeepMind and by the Indian and Chinese teams. But, he adds, although the problems are hard, the subject is still conceptually simple, and there are many more challenges to overcome before AI is able to solve problems at the level of research mathematics.AI researchers will be eagerly awaiting the next iteration of the IMO in Sunshine Coast, Australia, in July. Once its problems are made public for human participants to solve, AI-based systems get to solve them, too. (AI agents are not allowed to take part in the competition, and are therefore not eligible to win medals.) Fresh problems are seen as the most reliable test for machine-learning-based systems, because there is no risk that the problems or their solution existed online and may have leaked into training data sets, skewing the results. This article is reproduced with permission and was first published on February 7, 2025.
