  • Trump administration ends a federal program helping older people get jobs since the 1960s
    www.fastcompany.com
For the first time in U.S. history, there are more Americans over 62 than under 18. With the national workforce getting older every year, many economists argue that having people keep working longer than they used to would help maintain a robust labor market. But it can be hard for many older adults to stay employed past the age of 62, the year they typically become eligible for early Social Security retirement benefits, even when their health is good. In part, thats because approximately half of full-time workers in their early 50s lose their jobs involuntarily by the time they turn 65, possibly due to age bias and discrimination. And because it is much harder for workers over 50 to get hired than their younger counterparts, many of those older Americans exit the labor force before theyre ready to retire when they unexpectedly become unemployed. As gerontological social work researchers, we have conducted multiple studies on the career aspirations, workplace experiences and civic engagement of older adults. Were concerned about the fate of a federal program that helps low-income and unemployed adults age 55 and older get help with employment. The Trump administration has not released more than $300 million in funds typically disbursed in May to its grantees in 2025 from the Senior Community Service Employment Program. And the Trump administration proposes that no money be spent on it at all in the 2026 fiscal year. The effects of this defunding are already rippling across the country, from Florida to Oregon.Job training for older adultsThis federal program has been running since 1965. It provides on-the-job training to people over the age of 55 who are unemployed and have incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty level, which in 2025 means $19,563 for singles and $26,438 for couples. The approximately 40,000 older workers who have benefited from it annually in recent years have earned their areas prevailing minimum wage as a stipend while working part time. With some exceptions, workers can remain in the program for up to four years, but the average tenure was less than half that in 2022, around 22 months. The program funds job training that takes place at nonprofits and government agencies, such as Goodwill Industries, Easterseals, local social services agencies, and the network of public and nonprofit agencies that serve older adults and their caregivers around the country, called Area Agencies on Aging. The Department of Labor funds the program through direct grants to states, as well as grants to 20 national nonprofits, which in turn work with local organizations to recruit older adults and train them to do jobs like clerical, janitorial, and customer service roles in all 50 states, Washington and U.S. territories. In most cases, at least 75% of federal funds must go directly to wages and benefits for participants, with the payments usually being made by the local and statewide organizations that recruit the participants and place them into host agencies. The Senior Community Service Employment Program helps older Americans get a wide array of jobs.Benefits for individuals and communitiesThis program helps older Americans balance their checkbooks, enjoy better health, and engage more regularly with their own communities. Many participants consider it a lifeline because it helps them to pay their bills and gives them a sense of purpose. For older adults who have trouble finding jobs, the program gets them out of their homes and back into their communities while boosting their self-esteem.Once theyre trained, many of them find jobs as many as 26%, according to the most recently posted estimates from the Department of Labor, and up to 38% in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic upended the economy and labor markets. For some participants, the government-supported employment becomes an avenue out of homelessness, a way to boost mental health or an activity that strengthens their relationships.Through working for the government or nonprofits, participants in this program also learn about other ways they can get help, whether its accessing affordable health insurance or other job-training opportunities. The programs benefits outweigh its costs at the federal level, the Urban Institute has found. And the government and nonprofit agencies that host these older workers are better able to serve their local communities, partly because the programs participants often share information about the services they learn about with their relatives and friends. On the chopping blockIn the summer of 2025, Senior Community Service Employment Program grant recipients across the country began to furlough their staff. Program participants have exited ahead of schedule, and prospective participants are missing out on job-training opportunities that would have otherwise been available to them. The White House said it left the program out of its proposed 2026 budget due to what it said was a failure at moving older workers into unsubsidized employment. We question this rationale because it ignores the constraints that federal regulations place onto the Senior Community Service Employment Program. Its grantees are required to enroll unemployed and low-income older adults who have trouble getting jobs. Many cant find work due to severe disabilities, limited literacy, trouble speaking English, homelessness, being 75 or older, having formerly been incarcerated and other challenges. To require a program designed to help people who are inherently going to have the most trouble landing jobs and then to criticize it because all of its participants do not successfully and quickly wind up employed is a Catch-22. The mission and purpose of the program make that expectation unrealistic.Theres another Catch-22.On one hand, the Trump administration has mandated work requirements for health insurance coverage through Medicaid and introduced those requirements for food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the first time for able-bodied adults who are 60 to 64 years old.On the other hand, it is disrupting the only federal program specifically created to help older adults with low incomes find jobs and become better positioned to earn a living. These policies effectively remove a ladder while insisting that older adults must climb it.Improvement and innovationTo be sure, we do see some room for improvement in the program. For starters, we think it needs new metrics of success beyond job placement rates. Remaining employed requires good health, so its worth tracking what happens to the physical and mental health of older adults who participate in this program. We support the Labor Departments efforts to find new ways to deliver this job-training program. AmeriCorps, the volunteering and community service arm of the federal government, is also testing a new workforce development program for older workers that we think is promising. But for now, there are few alternatives to the Senior Community Service Employment Program. In our view, its well worth preserving it at a time when older workers face growing pressure to earn a paycheck.Cal J. • Bigme Hibreak Pro Color Challenges Distraction-Heavy Smartphones with E Ink Innovation
    www.yankodesign.com
Phone-like devices that deliberately avoid the addictive qualities of modern smartphones are becoming surprisingly common. From the reMarkable Paper Pro Move to various E Ink readers shaped like phones, manufacturers are recognizing that many people want the connectivity of a smartphone without the constant dopamine hits from social media notifications and bright, attention-grabbing screens. The Bigme Hibreak Pro Color joins this movement with a twist that sets it apart from most alternatives. While devices like the reMarkable focus on note-taking and reading, the Hibreak Pro Color runs full Android 14 with Google Play support, making it a legitimate smartphone that just happens to use an eye-friendly E Ink display instead of the usual LCD or OLED screen.Designer: BigmeThe standout feature is the new Kaleido 3 color E Ink screen, which adds a limited but useful color palette to what was previously a black-and-white display. The colors arent as vibrant or crisp as youd see on a traditional phone screen, but theyre perfectly adequate for app icons, simple graphics, and reading materials. The trade-off comes with reduced sharpness compared to monochrome E Ink, but the eye comfort benefits remain intact.Bigme kept most specifications nearly identical to the original black-and-white Hibreak Pro, with the main upgrade being Bluetooth 5.3 for better connectivity. The 4G and 5G network support means you can use this as your primary phone, complete with calling, texting, and data access. This distinguishes it from WiFi-only devices that require you to carry a separate phone for cellular connectivity. The screen aspect ratio feels much more phone-like compared to the tall, narrow display of the reMarkable Paper Pro Move. This makes the Hibreak Pro Color easier to use one-handed and more familiar for anyone switching from a traditional smartphone. However, unlike the reMarkable, theres no stylus support, positioning this device firmly in the smartphone category rather than the digital notebook space.Competition in this niche is heating up, with BOOX teasing its own color and cellular upgrade to the popular Palma 2, though details remain unconfirmed. The reMarkable Paper Pro Move takes a different approach entirely, focusing on handwriting and annotation rather than general smartphone functionality. Each device serves different needs within the broader movement toward more mindful technology use.The Hibreak Pro Color makes the most sense for people who want to reduce eye strain and digital distractions without giving up smartphone convenience. It handles reading, messaging, and light productivity tasks well, though youll need to adjust expectations for media consumption and gaming. The E Ink refresh rates simply cant match traditional displays for video or fast-moving content. These devices represent a growing recognition that our relationship with technology needs rebalancing. The Hibreak Pro Color offers a middle ground between complete digital detox and the overwhelming stimulation of modern smartphones, suggesting that sometimes the best innovation comes from deliberately doing less. The post Bigme Hibreak Pro Color Challenges Distraction-Heavy Smartphones with E Ink Innovation first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Liberating our Blender Add-on
    blog.polyhaven.com
In 2022, we released our Blender add-on that implements Poly Havens library of 2000 assets directly into the asset browser, allowing easy drag-and-drop imports and other small workflow enhancements.A demo video for our add-onWe meant this to be an experiment in selling paid products that offer users convenience, helping to fund the creation of 3D assets without monetizing our assets themselves (which will always be free & CC0).Now, it has become one of our primary income sources, and wed like to change that. One of our main goals for 2026/2027 is to stop selling our Blender add-on and make it free for everyone forever. Why?In a nutshell, to get back to our roots of free content and open source.Selling products is not the direction we want to take Poly Haven. We aim to lower the barrier of entry for 3D artists by making free, high-quality content for everyone. Restricting creative tools behind a paywall does not fit with that mission.Building a financially sustainable open-source/public domain project is uniquely challenging, but we believe the right direction to go is to make it community-focused and trust that users who agree with what we are doing will support us.Some contextThis section is a partial excerpt from our 23rd Dev Log originally posted on Patreon. Our Blender add-on, which is a $30 product on Superhive (previously the Blender Market) and included as part of the $5 Patreon tier, has been instrumental in the progress weve made on Poly Haven in the last two years. You can see this graph any time by visiting our finance reports page, but to save you a click, heres Poly Havens regular income over time since 2021:That big orange block that appears in September 2022? Thats the sales of our add-on on Superhive.Since then, weve grown to 6 full-time staff and 5 part-time contractors, all working on creating free high-quality 3D assets for you. A big part of what makes that possible is selling the add-on.But, this is not sustainable. We want to be in the business of making assets, not selling products. All of our assets are free and CC0, which means anyone can take them and make a similar product, even a free one. Maybe even one thats included in Blender by default. Thats great, thats what we want! But that would hurt our income and the sustainability of the Poly Haven project as a whole. The solution here is not to try and crack down on people using or distributing our assets like that we want our assets to be used everywhere by everyone at no cost but instead lets remove the part that makes it unsustainable: Our over-reliance on the product sales. How?In order to remove our reliance on product sales (without changing the pace or quality of our work), we have to replace that income with something else first: Patreon donations.Right now (June 2025), we have around 1900 active supporters on Patreon who donate an average of $4.50 each. Based on that, weve done the math accounting expected changes over the next few years and estimated that we would need around 5000 total patrons to replace the add-on income. At that point, we could stop selling the add-on and be financially in the same place we are today without any consequences.More than doubling our Patreon support is going to take a lot; its taken almost ten years to get here today. But we believe that if we employ some active effort to encourage new users who share our vision to help us, we can get to our goal in about two years.Ever since removing ads on our site and adding some UI changes to encourage donations, weve seen significant growth in new sign-ups on Patreon.A graph of active Patreon supporters over time. Ads were removed in March.Add to that our new Vaults system, and our goal of 5000 patrons is not too far-fetched. If we maintain this rate of about 200 new patrons per month, well be there in just over a year. Realistically, we expect this graph to plateau soon and things to take a bit longer than that, but its not out of reach. When? When we reach the final goal of 5000 patrons, the add-on will be removed from Superhive and released freely to everyone.Until then, nothing changes. The add-on is still a paid product, available to $5 patrons and for a $30 purchase on Superhive. If you believe in our mission to create free and open content, at a high quality, to support artists around the world without any financial barriers, then join us on Patreon today.Even a $1 monthly donation will help us reach our goal and free the add-on for everyone. What happens to previous customers and supporters once its free?We know making something that previously cost money free is a big deal, and maybe even a bit of a kick in the balls for some of you who paid for it.This is not actually the first time weve done that. 10 years ago, what was yet to become known as Poly Haven was instead a store where I sold HDRIs. Through a leap of faith and support from the community, I released all of my work for free and gradually turned it into what Poly Haven is today. We hope youll understand why were doing it (for the greater good), but to thank you for your support anyway, all supporters of the add-on ($3+ patrons and customers on Superhive) will forever have early access to our future assets, including everything in the Vaults.Even once the add-on is eventually free for everyone, our loyal supporters will have something that others dont: assets that will ultimately be free, but for a time are exclusive to them. Just like the add-on.
