  • Apple research video offers a glimpse into its tabletop robot tech
    www.macworld.com
MacworldApple does a lot of research into fundamental computer problems, and some of that results in real features of the products we buy. We can only hope the tech featured in the latest report published by their machine learning team is one of them.A new research paper and video posted to Apples Machine Learning site showcases the benefits of expressive robot movements vs. pure functional movements. The hypothesis of the paper is simple: Robots can move in a purely functional way, taking the shortest or most efficient motion from one state to the next. Or, they can move expressively, showcasing the robots intention, attention, attitude, and emotions. To test the two against each other, Apple built a non-anthropomorphic robota tabletop lampthat can see with computer vision, feel touch, understand gestures and verbal commands, and use its laser projector to display images. It moves via six articulated joints. The similarities to the Pixar mascot Luxo Jr. are striking. It moves and it reacts to the point where it appears to have a distinct personality. The video is worth watching, as it demonstrates just how much more fun, but also more useful the expressive motion is. You can tell when the robot is paying attention to the users gestures or commands because of the way it moves the lamp to look, as a person would look at you. The functional robot is paying attention too, but it simply performs the action. The expressive robot gives users confidence of knowing if the robot is working or not.AppleFail states show the robot indicating that it is trying before failing, while the functional robot simply stops. Ask the weather and the expressive robot looks outside first. When the functional robot reminds the user to have water, it shines a light on it. When you see the expressive robot move the light back and forth between the users book and the cup, and then lean down to nudge the cup toward her, you will instantly want one of these in your life.AppleAnd you may have the chance. Its not quite a smart lamp, but Apple is rumored to be working on a tabletop robot that could have some of the features explored here. The alleged feature set claims it combines a HomePod speaker, an iPad-like display, and an articulating armature so it can move around. It is said to be a sort of smart home command center (not unlike the HomePad that may launch much earlier), video conferencing tool, and media device. We werent too interested in the project based on rumors, but seeing Apples research into making robots that use expressive gestures to imbue them with personality makes it so much more appealing. Even if they dont even need a fancy iPad-like screen, everyone will want to buy one of its any bit as expressive as this lamp.

  • Apples magic robot lamp is coming to save us all
    www.macworld.com
MacworldYou know how you see a concept car from an auto manufacturer and you think Wow! Thats so cool! I cant wait to drive that! and then their next car comes out and it looks like a Dodge Stratus?Okay, look, the Dodge Stratus was a fine car. (Is it a fine car? The Macalope really has no idea and hes not going to look it up for the purposes of this column.) But it was a modest-looking sedan. It wasnt exactly breaking new ground. Unless you run it off the road, Jeff.Concepts are sometimes impractical. A space-aged car might look great, and then you realize those swoops make for huge blind spots and a glass roof is a tremendous safety hazard. Some changes are understandable. Changes requested by middle managers who think the company should just keep making the kind of cars its been making all along, however, can suck all the wonder out of a product.Apple recently showed off a concept that the Macalope very much hopes will become a real product someday and, if the rumors are true, it seems like it might. Dubbed ELEGNT, the prototype is an adorable lamp that moves in response to user commands and cues. The device can perform assistive functionssuch as shining its light somewhere or projecting a videoin either a solely functional manner or in an expressive one, where it pauses to look at the user, dances to music, or otherwise performs human-like behaviors.Apple has published a paper and video showing off some of the research it has done with robotics.ApplePresumably, these do not include non-desirable ones like incessant humming, reheating fish in the break room microwave, or, well, homicide. The video never shows the lamp wielding a knife so fingers crossed.Joking aside (dont worry, just for a second) the video is fairly delightful. Apple has a real chance now to take this concept and bring it to market without sucking all the joy out of it. Bloombergs Mark Gurman has been saying for months now that Apple is working on a desktop device that moves in reaction to the user but has a screen attached to an arm rather than a lamp. And while the ELEGNT lamp does look amazingly like Pixars mascot, the Macalope thinks a screen is probably going to be more useful than a light bulb. The Macalopes pal Dan Moren recently opined on this very site that Apple should embrace its weird side. The Macalope agrees and it will be interesting to see how much of this demonstration makes it into a final product.Anyone whos worked in IT has probably heard the term computer magic before. Just do it with computer magic. Oh, just like that? If its that easy, why dont you do it with managerial magic, Chad? Thats what I thought.IDGComputer magic is not a thing. But Apple has always succeeded by making things that seem like magic. Swipe to unlock. The thinness of the MacBook Air. Rebuilding the desktop.Wait, not that last one. How did that get in there?Apples magical items dont have to work right all the time, but they need to work right almost all the time and in ways that surprise and delight you. For the Macalopes money, AirPods are a prime example of this. Tiny headphones that (usually) automatically know which device youre using and switch contexts for you. Not magic but pretty magical. In an age when we are constantly promised artificial assistants who will give us the help we need and they routinely fail to do so, Apple might do well to tone down the expectation on intelligence and turn up the expectation on whimsey. Get it to do what it needs to do almost all the time, but in a way that makes you not care about those few times when it doesnt. Thats Apples sweet spot.Okay, fine, the Macalope checked: Dodge no longer makes the Stratus. If youd like to receive regular news and updates to your inbox sign up forour newsletters, including The Macalope and Apple Breakfast, David Prices weekly, bite-sized roundup of all the latest Apple news and rumors.

  • Microsoft Visio cheat sheet: How to get started
    www.computerworld.com
Its often much easier to convey information with a well-designed diagram than to communicate through a large text blurb. As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.Thats where Microsoft Visio comes in. Part of the Microsoft 365 suite, this app helps professionals convey information through professionally designed diagrams. In this article:What is Microsoft Visio? How to find Visio in Microsoft 365How to create a flowchart in VisioHow to create an organizational chart in VisioHow to create a Venn diagram in VisioHow to create a diagram from scratch in VisioHow to save, open, and collaborate on Visio diagramsWhat is Microsoft Visio?Microsoft Visio is the diagramming and vector graphics application in the Microsoft Office family. If you need to make diagrams such as decision trees, flow charts, org charts, and so on, this is the Microsoft tool to do it. Visio is less popular than other Microsoft apps like Word or Excel, but it is still a valuable tool to understand and use in everyday business.Although there is a desktop Visio application, this cheat sheet will walk you through the basics of using Visio in Microsoft 365 the web-only version thats included with Microsoft 365/Office 365 business and enterprise subscriptions since most business professionals who use Office have access to this version. All of the features in the web version of Visio can also be found in the desktop application, but not vice versa. How to find Visio in Microsoft 365For most people, Visio will not appear by default on your Microsoft 365 home page. To find Visio, navigate to your Microsoft 365 home page, sign in if you havent already, and type visio in the search bar. From the Microsoft 365 home page, search for Visio and launch it in your browser.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryClick Visio in the results list to launch the web app in your browser. You will be taken to a page where you can see some commonly used templates for creating diagrams. This includes flowcharts, basic diagrams, organizational charts, infographic timelines and more.Theres also an icon labelled All templates here you can go through the complete list of templates available in Visio to help you find the exact template thats right for your situation. The Visio start page offers a variety of templates to start from.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryUsing templates is the easiest way to begin making diagrams in Visio. Ill walk you through three of the most common Microsoft Visio use cases creating flowcharts, org charts, and Venn diagrams. If Visio doesnt have a template that suits your business needs, its quick and easy to make custom diagrams using Visios drag-and-drop features; Ill show you that process as well. How to create a flowchart in Microsoft VisioA flowchart is a type of diagram that represents a workflow or process. It is excellent for showing the step-by-step process for completing a task while giving you the flexibility to show different decisions that need to be made and representing if-then scenarios. Microsoft Visio makes it extremely easy to create this type of diagram. In this example, we will create a simple flow diagram to show what will happen during a team meeting to discuss a new idea for a company app. The team will discuss the idea, decide if they like it, and then take action based on that decision before ending the meeting.Begin by clicking the Flowchart Template icon on the Visio start page. Youll be taken to the main Visio interface, which looks a lot like Microsoft Word and other Microsoft 365 apps. The flowchart template opens with basic flowchart shapes in the left column and a blank canvas on the right, topped by the Office Ribbon toolbar.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryThe first step for any flowchart is creating a start point. Click and hold the oval Start/End icon in the left panel and drag it onto the blank canvas area on the right. The oval object appears with eight handle points at the corners and sides. To resize the oval, click and drag any of these handles; to move the oval on the canvas, click the middle of the oval and drag it.Drag and drop a Start/End oval onto the canvas. You can drag any of the handles around the outside of the oval to resize it.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryTo add text to a shape on the canvas, double-click in the center of it, and youll enter text edit mode just type in the text you want to appear there. In our example, well call the starting oval shape Team Meeting Begins. You can adjust the texts font and size using the tools in the Ribbon toolbar at the top of the screen. I recommend making the text at least a size 24 so that it is properly visible. The start oval now shows Team Meeting Begins.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryNext, you need to add your processes every step that will be taken for the task to be completed that doesnt require a decision to be made. These are represented by rectangles.Click the Process icon and drag it to the canvas below the oval we added previously. As you do so, a dotted green line appears that guides you to place the rectangle directly below the oval. Resize the rectangle as needed, then name it Team Discusses Idea.To connect the items, hover over the bottom edge of the start shape, then click and drag from the green and white button on the start shape to the top of the process shape. This will create a downward-flowing arrow connecting the two.Connecting the process rectangle to the start oval.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryIf you make a mistake, you can delete any shape or line on the canvas by right clicking-it and selecting Delete from the pop-up menu.In our flowchart, well next show that the team needs to decide whether they like the app idea. This is represented via a diamond shape and will have three possible outcomes.Click the Decision icon in the left panel, drag it below Team Discusses Idea, and repeat the steps outlined above to resize it, name it Does the team like the idea? and connect it as shown below. srcset="https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?quality=50&strip=all 943w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=283%2C300&quality=50&strip=all 283w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=768%2C813&quality=50&strip=all 768w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=659%2C697&quality=50&strip=all 659w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=159%2C168&quality=50&strip=all 159w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=79%2C84&quality=50&strip=all 79w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=454%2C480&quality=50&strip=all 454w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=340%2C360&quality=50&strip=all 340w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-07-flowchart-step4-decision-diamond-added.png?resize=236%2C250&quality=50&strip=all 236w" width="943" height="998" sizes="(max-width: 943px) 100vw, 943px">Add the decision diamond and connect it to the process rectangle above.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryThe three possible responses to the decision will be No, Yes, and Not enough info.To add text boxes for the responses, go to the Home tab on the Ribbon toolbar and select the Text Box icon (a rectangle with an A in the middle). Click on that, and your cursor will be able to draw text boxes on the canvas. The lines around a text box appear when you select the box or type in it but disappear when not selected so the text inside appears directly on the canvas rather than inside a shape.Create a text box for each response, then type the appropriate word or phrase in each one. You can work with text boxes in the same ways you can with shapes.Adding text boxes for the three possible responses.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryBelow each text box, add a rectangular Process shape for its outcome and name the outcome shapes as shown below. Draw connector lines from the Decision shape to each response and from each response to its outcome. To create connector lines that go across and then down the canvas, simply drag from the starting object out to the side and then down, and the connector line will appear where you dragged.Adding and connecting the three outcomes to the flowchart.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryNow weve added three possible outcomes to our decision tree that will cover the possible outcomes of the meeting. Please take note of the third decision (furthest to the right). Often you may need to account for decisions that will result in you going back to an earlier step in the process and redoing some steps.(Having the third option return to a previous step in this example is for demonstration purposes; in reality, youd conduct more research outside the meeting and then discuss the idea again in a later meeting.)Now there is only one step left: add the ending to the flowchart (using the Start/End shape again), which is when the meeting ends.Add, label, and connect the end shape, and the flowchart is complete.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryHow to create an organizational chart in Microsoft VisioNext, we will look at how to create a simple org chart that consists of one head executive, their assistant, two managers, and their corresponding teams. Go back to the Visio start page and click on the Organization Chart template.Creating an org chart is relatively simple. As we did with the flowchart, drag and drop the items you want in this case, colored rectangles corresponding to work roles from the left pane onto the main canvas and organize them in a hierarchical structure as shown below.Drag and drop placeholders for the employees in your org chart.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryAll thats needed after that is to draw the lines showing the relationships between staff members. As with the flowchart, draw lines going from the higher-level staff to the lower-level staff.Draw connector lines showing the relationship of employees to one another.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryTo add text to the boxes, click on each image, then modify the name and title of the staff member.Fill in the employees names to complete the org chart.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryHow to create a Venn diagram in Microsoft VisioVenn diagrams are a great way to visually compare two or more groups or items and show where they overlap. To quickly create one in Visio, go to the Visio home page and select All templates. In the search bar, type venn and choose Venn Diagrams from the type-ahead options that appear. In the results, youll see a basic Venn diagram template as well as some completed sample diagrams. Select Venn Diagram Template.Search for and select the basic Venn diagram template.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryOn Venn diagram building page, you will see multiple shape and appearance options on the left. For our example, a simple two-item comparison, select the 2-sets Venn item and drag it onto the canvas. As with the shapes in other templates weve worked with, you can resize the 2-sets Venn item by dragging the handles that appear at the corners and edges when you click on it.Drag the 2-sets Venn item onto the canvas.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryFor this example, well compare tomatoes to apples. Using the Ribbon toolbar, add a text box for Tomato at the upper left and one for Apple at the upper right.Add labels for each side of the Venn diagram.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryNow to add labels to each portion of the Venn diagram, simply double click each area (left side, middle, and right side) and type in the appropriate text. To finish the Venn diagram, add the text shown in the picture below. The completed Venn diagram shows both how tomatoes and apples are different and how theyre alike.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryHow to create a diagram from scratch in Microsoft VisioIf there are no templates that suit your exact needs, you can create a diagram from scratch. While we cant anticipate every action you might want to take in creating a custom diagram, here are the basic steps. To begin, from the Visio start page, click Blank drawing.1. Select and place your shapes. As when using a template, youll see the Shapes panel on the left side of the screen, with a blank canvas to the right. The basic building blocks of your diagram are different shapes that you use to represent different items. Click and drag your desired shape(s) onto the canvas.Drag any shapes you want to use for a diagram from the shapes panel onto the canvas.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryYou can move, resize, and add text to shapes on the canvas just as we did when using a template. In addition to the generic shapes that appear in the Shapes pane by default, you can look up custom icons that more accurately describe the information that you want to convey.Click the plus symbol at the left of the panel, and youll be able to browse through multiple collections of shapes and icons that you can pin to your panel, such as Cycle Diagram Shapes, Business Frameworks, and Interface Icons. (In fact, Visio templates are basically targeted sets of these shape collections.)You can also use the search box at the top of the Shapes panel to search for specific icons, as shown below.Use the search box to find highly specific shapes or icons for your diagram.Shimon Brathwaite / Foundry2. Add arrowsNext, you need to use arrows as connectors to show relationships between the items in your diagram. These arrow images help people to understand the logical direction that information is flowing. Click the icon with two curved arrows at the left of the Shapes panel to see the Arrow Shapes collection.Visio offers an array of arrow types you can use to show the progression of your diagram.Shimon Brathwaite / Foundry3. Apply a themeThemes can be helpful to make your diagrams more visually appealing or to reflect company or client color schemes. To select a theme, go to the Design tab in the Ribbon toolbar, click Themes, and select the theme of your choice.Applying a theme makes your diagram more attractive and easier to take in quickly.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryHow to save, open, and collaborate on Visio diagramsAs youre working on a diagram in your browser, Visio autosaves your work, calling it Drawing (or Drawing2, Drawing3, etc.) by default. To change its file name to something more meaningful, click its name in the title bar at the top of the screen and type in a new name. srcset="https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?quality=50&strip=all 1211w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?resize=300%2C165&quality=50&strip=all 300w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?resize=768%2C422&quality=50&strip=all 768w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?resize=1024%2C562&quality=50&strip=all 1024w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?resize=150%2C82&quality=50&strip=all 150w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?resize=854%2C469&quality=50&strip=all 854w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?resize=640%2C351&quality=50&strip=all 640w, https://b2b-contenthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/visio-22-rename-file.png?resize=444%2C244&quality=50&strip=all 444w" width="1024" height="562" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px">You can easily rename your diagrams.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryWhen you go back to the Visio start page, youll see all the diagrams youve created (and that others have shared with you) in a list at the bottom of the page. Click any file name in the list to open the diagram.Visio files you have access to are listed on the Visio home page.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryThe diagram will open in a mode that lets you view and comment on it but not edit it. To switch to editing mode, select Edit Diagram > Edit in Browser at the top right of the screen. When you open a saved diagram, youll need to click Edit Diagram to make changes to it.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryLike Word, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft 365 apps, Visio lets you collaborate on diagrams with co-workers in real time. Microsoft calls this co-authoring. To share a diagram, click the Share button at top right and select Share from the menu that appears. The Share pane appears. Here you can type in colleagues names or email addresses and an optional message. Click the pencil icon at the right to choose whether you want to let the people youre inviting edit the diagram or simply view and comment on it. When youre done, click Send, and your invitees will receive an email with a link where they can access the diagram. You can invite colleagues to collaborate on a Visio diagram.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryTo add a comment to a diagram, click the Comments button at the top right and then click New in the pane that appears. Or, to comment on a specific item in the diagram, click its shape and then click the New button in the Comments pane.Type your comment in the comment box (you can @mention someone to call their attention to it) and then click the Post comment button (a paper airplane icon). Others can read and reply to your comments and/or add their own comments.Adding a comment to a diagram.Shimon Brathwaite / FoundryNow youre all set to begin creating and sharing custom diagrams for every business need. This article was originally published in January 2023 and updated in February 2025.

  • Assassins Creed Shadows Director Reveals Details About Differences Between Dual Protagonists
    gamingbolt.com
With Assassins Creed Shadows slowly sneaking up to its March 20 release date, Ubisoft developers have been revealing quite a few details about its design and features. In a new interview with Screenrant, director Jonathan Dumont spoke about the titles dual protagonists, how they will affect the game, and how players will experience the story through their eyes.Dumont also emphasises the fact that both protagonists Yasuke and Naoe will be different characters in gameplay terms as well. Naoe, for instance, will be light, nimble, and more focused on speed, while Yasuke will be strong and more likely to overcome his obstacles with brute force. This was done, according to Dumont, to encourage players to frequently switch characters up for gameplay variety. Its complicated because we didnt make it easy, said Dumont. So we really wanted both of them in gameplay to have advantages and strengths and weaknesses, and really sort of try to be true to the archetypes as well. So thats why Yasuke is not the best in parkour, and hell be limited in some capacity there. But in combat, hes a samurai and hes an explosive samurai. And then the same, the opposite a little bit more, for Naoe, which is super speedy. And then she can hide a little bit everywhere. Shes like a gymnast almost. She just jumps around. But if she faces multiple enemies, its a little bit trickier for her, right? So we try to capture that sort of balance between both.Dumont also spoke about how the previous Assassins Creed title with dual protagonists, Syndicate, helped the studio better distinguish between its two characters. He spoke about Yasuke and Naoe fulfilling two distinct roles, while Syndicates protagonists were much more similar to each other.I think here and there, there are things that will, some concepts that we have, responded Dumont to a question about lessons learned from Syndicate. I think trying to have them not too different voices [] two sort of different archetypes and one needs to be fire, the other one is a little bit ice, a little bit, trying to get that into the game so that you can have some negative banter, but make them complementary. So that was something that we took a little bit more from Syndicate and moved into Shadows. But from Syndicate, they were already twins that knew themselves all their lives, they knew each other all their lives, so they add more of a history, he continued. Here in Shadows, they learn to be together, but its a tough time at war in Shadows, so they dont necessarily start off as friends. So thats building the relationship is I think it makes for a very interesting story, though.Ubisoft has previously spoken about distinguishing between Yasuke and Naoe from the mechanical point of view in the past. Back in January, associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois spoke about how Yasuke wont have iconic assassin abilities like Eagle Vision, and how his perspective as an outsider to not only the games Feudal Japan setting, but to the assassins organisation itself will be an important aspect of the game.Assassins Creed Shadows is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 20.

  • Insomniac Games Most Stressful Period Was When it Worked Without Sony
    gamingbolt.com
Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price has revealed that the most stressful time for the studio was when it wasnt working with Sony to create games. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Price referred to the time in the early 2010s when Insomniac had worked with other companies, including EA for the title Fuse and Microsoft for Sunset Overdrive.I think the most stressful period was when we had moved away from working with Sony, and we were getting comfortable with working with other partners who had completely different approaches than we did, said Price when asked about the most stressful period for Insomniac under his tenure as CEO. I think we had become so compatible with Sony in terms of our approach and philosophies, that it was a little bit of a shock, and took some adjusting to work with other our approach and philosophies that it was a little bit of a shock; and it took some adjusting to work with other publishers, and that can be distracting, when youre trying to get games out the door.I think for every developer-publisher relationship, it takes time to mature and get to a place where both parties are comfortable, he continued. And during that period when we werent working as closely with Sony, we didnt give it enough time; we didnt give ourselves a lot of time with these other publishers before we ultimately went back to Sony. But at the same time, I think we knew what we were looking for, and we knew that from the beginning we had the best and most compatible partner we had always been Sony. For context, Insomniac Games had originally started making a name for itself with early titles like the Spyro the Dragon franchise and Ratchet & Clank. After a run with the Resistance franchise, the studio decided to diversify its portfolio of games, partnering up with EA for action title Fuse. After the Xbox One-exclusive (at the time) Sunset Overdrive, the studio teamed back up with Sony to make the Marvels Spider-Man games as well as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.Currently, Insomniac Games works as an internal studio with Sony as a first party developer for PlayStation.
