The International Garden Festival at Reford Gardens in Grand-Mtis, Quebec, has announced the winning projects selected for its 26th edition, called Borders, which will run from June 21 to October 5, 2025.ve De Garie-Lamanque, artistic director, has invited designers to rethink the notion of border in todays postcolonial context and to transpose these reflections into a garden environment that blurs disciplines, renegotiates preconceived ideas about garden/landscape, and actively dialogues with visitors.A total of 180 projects by designers from 27 countries were submitted. The four gardens selected for the 2025 edition include the following:BACK / GROUNDPhoto credit: Patrick BrubBACK / GROUNDPatrick Brub | Qubec, CanadaBACK / GROUND aims to trigger reconsideration of human activities and their environmental and social impacts. The result is a vision of the world in which nature is a living environment of which human beings are an integral part and from which they can dissociate themselves through artifice or delusion.Peek-a-BooPhoto credit: Hermine Demal, Stephen ZimmererPeek-a-BooHermine Demal, Stephen Zimmerer | Qubec, Canada + United StatesPeek-a-Boo aims to interrogate the edge between earth and sky, and is articulated as a colourful field of powder-coated steel grates. In the First World War, battles between warring nations left behind remarkable and nearly unrecognizable landscapes due to the intense artillery barrages. These landscapes reflect how borderspolitical, geographical, and culturalcan be violently reshaped by conflict, erasing our shared memories. Today, post-war sites serve a memorial purpose. They stand as symbols of resilience in the face of hardship. You Shall (Not) PassPhoto credit: Simon BarretteYou Shall (Not) PassSimon Barrette | Qubec, CanadaIn You Shall (Not) Pass, Simon Barrette challenges the limits, both visible and invisible, that map our environments, relationships, possessions, and thoughts. Composed of thousands of surveying markers strung onto steel wire of the type used by surveyors to physically mark the edges of a property the oversized bead curtain hangs in the middle of the forest. The monolithic installation cleaves the landscape, conjuring up the very archetype of a border.Three projects received a special mention from the jury: EN CAS DINTRUSION COMPOSEZ 511, by Boris Pintado (Quebecc, Canada), Le Langage de lrosion, by Rmi Bonin and Vincent Morrier (Quebec, Canada), and Lookout to a Scented Garden, by Gonzlez Serrano Studio+ (Spain). This years jury was made up of Vincent Guin (landscape architect DE urbanist, Conseil dArchitecture, dUrbanisme et de lEnvironnement de Paris; vice president, Fdration Franaise du Paysage dle-de-France; guest lecturer, Dpartement Projet, cole Nationale Suprieure de Paysage de Versailles), Gabriel Lacombe (architect OAQ; landscape architect; visual artist; co-founder, Atelier MAP), Lucie St-Pierre (landscape architect AAPQ, FCSLA; senior partner, Lemay), Alexander Reford (director, Reford Gardens / International Garden Festival); ve De Garie-Lamanque (artistic director, International Garden Festival); and Franois Leblanc (technical coordinator, International Garden Festival). The 26th edition of the event will take place from June 21 to Otober 5, 2025. • Did you know the top brass at ARMA and DayZ studio Bohemia Interactive bought a 'disinformation outlet' in 2023?
    www.gamedeveloper.com
In the last decade, it's become fashionable among the world's billionaires to purchase media outletswith some lately deciding to use that ownership as a means of shaping coverage. So it's no surprise that Bohemia Interactive CEO Marka panla and CFVO Slavomr Pavlektwo of the richest men in the Czech Republicwould want in on the action. What is surprising is one of the publications they chose to purchase. In 2023 the pair, through their media company Nae Mdia, acquired Parlamentn listy, a publication in the Czech Republic that's been accused for years of platforming extremist politicians, disinformation, and Russian propaganda.Unlike other unusual game industry-adjacent acquisitions Game Developer has reported on in the last year, this was not a secret transaction. panla and Pavlek are already the owners of Echo Media, which publishes the Czech publication Echo24 and its weekly print edition. Word of the purchase simply didn't make it far out of the Czech Republic. To those unfamiliar with the dynamics of the Czech media landscape, the purchase of Parlamentn listy would have appeared to be just another ordinary business move.In response to a request for for comment from Game Developer, panla explained that the purchase is part of his Pavlek's "broader media investment strategy." "We oversee a diverse portfolio of over 40 companies, including several significant media outlets like Echo24, Tdenk Echo, Hrot magazine, and Radio Prostor," he said. "Most of our operations are structured under the SPM holding company, though Parlamentn listy remains a separate entity." He stated that both Echo24 and Parlamentn listy rank "among the top 10 online news outlets" in the Czech Republic.Related:So why add this outlet to the roster? The answers, it turns out, are deeply tied to accusations of disinformation against Parlamentn listy.panla says there has been a "distortion of public debate" in the last decadeThe accusations against Parlamentn listy apparently played a role in panla and Pavlek's decision to add it to their portfolio. panla told Game Developer that the pair "recognized the increasing distortion of public debate during key moments like the 2015 European migration crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic.""This motivated us to take responsibility and help ensure independent voices challenging the prevailing narrative could be heard. We believe freedom of speech is essential for a prosperous and thriving society and competition of different world views, ideas and approaches is super important."He added that he sees recent "US/Western approaches to free speech and attempted control of thinking and narrative to support [a] single ideology" as comparable to what the Czech Republic experienced under communism during the Cold War.Image via Parlamentn listyIn a 2023 interview with Czech news site Seznam Zprvy (reviewed by Game Developer through GoogleTranslate), panla said he became interested in purchasing the publication following criticism of Echo24's print edition by an unnamed high-profile journalist."He calls the weekly Echo pro-Russian, talks about the pro-Russian elite, and for him, Parlamentn listy is a pro-Russian scum," panla said of the journalist, when speaking with Seznam Zprvy. "And for me, this whole line is very disturbing. It scares me when the heralds of the alleged truth openly spread hatred."panla told Game Developer that the operation of Parlamentn listy doesn't affect day-to-day life at Bohemia Interactive. "Our business structure is designed for efficient operation across multiple ventures. While Bohemia Interactive remains our primary focus, we've established strong management teams across our portfolio companies."It should be noted Bohemia has raised money for charities benefitting the International Committee of the Red Cros to benefit people affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, fundraising that may be at odds with the editorial choices of Parlamentn listy. With two of the studio's co-founders and current C-suite leaders playing a bigger role in the Czech media and political landscape, it's notable that the money earned through sales of the ARMA series, DayZ, and other games in Bohemia's portfolio allowed them to make these kinds of moves. It's exceptionally notable when you dig into the articles published by Parlamentn listy and start to take in the reach of alleged disinformation on display.Parlamentn listy runs stories promoting many right-wing talking points and conspiraciesCriticism of Parlamentn listy's editorial strategy dates back to at least 2015, shortly after Russia illegally annexed Crimea in a prelude to its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It was around this time that the Russian government began to wage a global propaganda war promoting its interests and driving internal conflicts in its global rivals. If critics like like those at Britsk listy are to be believed, ties between Parlamentn listy and Russian business interests served as the foundation for publishing stories promoting Russia's interests, such as coverage of the 2014 elections held in annexed Crimea after Russia's invasion (these elections are not recognized as valid by members of the international community).Since panla and Pavlek's purchase of the outlet in 2023, Parlamentn listy has run stories referring to Ukrainians as "scum," published a number of stories accusing trans women in sports of being men in disguise, promoted the right-wing talking point that President Biden declared Easter a "transgender holiday" (he commemorated International Transgender Day of Visibility, which takes place on March 31 every year, and overlapped with Easter in 2024) and regularly draws thin connections between European institutions and billionaire George Soros. Conspiracies about Soros are a pillar of modern antisemitism in the far right. There are conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic, regular stories about migrant crime, and anti-vaccination talking points. In response to Game Developer's queries on these stories, panla offered the following statement: "Our approach to media ownership centers on respecting editorial independence. Each outlet's content and editorial decisions rest with their respective editorial teams. We fundamentally disagree with attempts to silence or label media outlets based on their viewpoints. The practice of falsely labeling different voices as 'pro-Russian' or 'anti-science' has become a concerning mechanism for silencing legitimate perspectives.""It's encouraging to see improvement in this situation now, as what appeared to be a U.S.-originated censorship industrial complex extending globally is being dismantled."Image via Bohemia Interactive. The publication seems to have a keen eye for supporting the policies of President Trump. In a recent story about the chaotic termination of USAID operations this week (led by Department of Government Efficiency head and billionaire Elon Musk, whose company Starlink was being investigated by USAID), Parlamentn listy downplayed the agency's role as a vehicle for humanitarian aid, stating that "the agency's program objectives shifted from purely humanitarian support to political ambitions, leading it to withdraw from Russia in 2012 and from Bolivia a year later." It also promoted the administration's false claim that the U.S government "subsidized" media outlet Politico for $8 million, characterizing federal agency subscriptions to the publication as a federal handout. Not all of the above stories are necessarily pro-Russian talking points, but they do mirror positions promoted by Russian international propaganda operations like American media group Tenet Media, which was found to have been funded by RT employees Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, who were charged by the FBI for allegedly violating the Foreign Agents Act.Podcasters Tim Pool, Lauren Southern, and Dave Rubin all regularly voiced similar positions while being paid millions by Kalashnikov and Afanasyeva (the three denied any knowledge of Russia's involvement with the company). It's unknown at this time if panla and Pavlek support any of the positions promoted by Parlamentn listy, but their involvement has raised concerns among some in the Czech game development community. Czech video game sales analyst Avi Duda told Game Developer they "weren't surprised" by the purchase, nodding toward donations made by Pavlek to the far-right Freedom and Direct Democracy political party (SPD), whose members are often favorably covered by Parlamentn listy. panla acknowledged those donations in his interview with Seznam Zprvy, noting he personally supports Svobodn and Civic Democratic Party (ODS), both traditional conservative parties tacking toward the center and center-right."They're of course free to do whatever they want and purchase any media, but buying this to prove to others that having different opinions is ok seems very short-sighted," Duda said. "I don't see a difference in what's written in the website now and what was written there before they owned it. It's always the same eyebrow-raising content with a bunch of straight up lies. They should know better than that."As The Czech Republic becomes a bigger player in the global game development market (Czech developer Warhorse Studios managed to sell a million copies of Kingdom Come Deliverance II the day it launched), the role its leaders play in public life is having a greater and greater impact. That they've chosen to back a publication criticized for its alleged pro-Russian stance as Russia wages a physical and propaganda war against its rivals gives developers reason to ask what kind of role panla and Pavlek wish to play. For now, that role appears to be an expansion of the pair's media portfolio. "Parlamentn listy was neither our first nor last media investment," panla said. As founders of Bohemia Interactive, both Slavomir Pavlicek and I remain committed to supporting media freedom through strategic investments."Our current portfolio demonstrates our ongoing commitment to fostering diverse voices in Czech media."

  • Report: Unity continues mass layoffs with 'abrupt' communications and 5am emails
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Unity has spent $205 million laying off 25 percent of its workforce this fiscal year and it looks like the company isn't finished yet.Multiple reports from (now former) Unity employees indicate the engine maker is continuing to axe roles across its business.A forum post from Behavior package tech lead, Shanee Nishry, stated their entire team had been cut during another round of layoffs.Behavior is a visual tool for authoring behaviors used to control NPCs and objects. According to Nishry's Linkedin page, they created the tool on their own personal time before it evolved into a core Unity product.Nishry said they have asked Unity to open source the tool but it's unclear whether that request will be granted.Unity lead game designer, Andr de Miranda Cardoso, explained they were also impacted by a layoff round that occurred "suddenly."There are more testimonies like those, including a post from Unity senior technical artist Peter Roe (spotted by 80.lv) who said he was told his role was being eliminated via an email sent at 5am from a 'noreply@unity' address."I was impacted by layoffs at Unity today, along with many talented and hardworking colleagues. While this news is tough, Im incredibly grateful for the nearly three years I spent at the company," he wrote on Linkedin."That being said, I want to call out the way Unity chose to communicate these layoffs. Receiving a 5am email from 'noreply@unity' informing me that my role was being 'eliminated' and that I'd lose system access by the end of the day felt completely abrupt and impersonal. Unity must do better in how they treat their workers in hard times like this."Last year, Unity said its restructuring program would deliver "attractive" revenue growth and healthy financials. The move was part of a wider company reset following the departure of former CEO John Riccitiello in the wake of the protracted Runtime Fee debacle.Riccitiello was eventually replaced on a permanent basis by current CEO Matthew Bromberg, who killed the revised Runtime Fee in a bid to earn back the trust of the development community.Game Developer has reached out to Unity for comment.

The company has made some significant tweaks to its TV app that make the platform look like a full-blown streaming service.Last year, YouTube adjusted the layout of its TV app, allowing users to pull up a videos comments and descriptions on the right side of the screen while the video plays on the left. It also added seasons that make series of videos easier to flip through with a remote, along with a Watch With feature that lets creators add commentary to games and events in real time. For more and more people, watching TV means watching YouTube, Mohan wrote. But the new television doesnt look like the old television. • Sony Turned Down The Order: 1886 Sequel Due to Critical Reception, Dev Says
    www.ign.com
Sony allegedly turned down a sequel to PlayStation 4 game The Order: 1886 due to its poor critical reception, the co-founder of developer Ready at Dawn has said.Andrea Pessino told MinnMax that Ready at Dawn pitched an "incredible" sequel and would've "signed [its] life away" to make it purely for the sake of players. The Order: 1886 arrived in 2015 as an action game about werewolves in Victorian London but, despite being among the best looking games of the generation, it received middling reviews from critics."It would have been an incredible sequel, I can tell you that for a fact," Pessino said, though admitted he couldn't say much because he doesn't own the franchise rights. "We pitched the sequel to Sony regardless of [the critical reception] and, in a way, it's better that they passed because if we thought we were going to be screwed before, man, with the sequel, we would have signed our life away."Pessino said Ready at Dawn had a difficult relationship with Sony while making the original game and ultimately had to cut myriad elements in order to hit deadlines and eventually released The Order: 1886 before it was ready. The graphical fidelity of the game's initial pitches and reveal led Sony to expect the same quality of builds to be submitted at certain milestones in its development, Pessino said, but payments were withheld when Ready at Dawn had to prioritize other things and temporarily couldn't hit the same graphical standards. While Pessino said this is industry standard for third party publishers, it led to a frustrating relationship between Ready at Dawn and Sony. The team was ready to sign up for a worse situation to make a The Order: 1886 sequel regardless."We were going to do it just because we wanted to deliver it to the players but we would have been... Terrible budget, budget would be small, we would have been completely at the mercy of any decisions and things because we had no leverage whatsoever," Pessino said."We were not in a position to negotiate a reasonable contract; they could have done whatever. But we would've taken it because we wanted a chance to redeem the franchise. All of the groundwork was really, really good, I can tell you that for a fact. There was so much there that just needed to be built on."The Order: 1866 was also left on a blatant cliffhanger so fans were desperate for a sequel to come. Ten years on and those hopes are dashed, of course, with Ready at Dawn being shut down by owner Meta in 2024.In our 6/10 review, IGN said: "Though a stylish adventure, The Order: 1886 emphasizes its cinematic polish at the crippling cost of gameplay freedom."Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.

  • Captain America: Brave New World Is the Start of Avengers 2.0
    www.ign.com
It has been almost six years since the Avengers broke up following the defeat of Thanos and the death of Tony Stark. But it was only a matter of time until the world needed its mightiest heroes once again. With new Avengers movies coming in 2026 and 2027, the MCU needs to reassemble the team pretty quickly. Thankfully, the first step in recruiting the next version of the Avengers begins in Captain America: Brave New World. We know people miss the Avengers and we miss the Avengers, says Nate Moore, a veteran producer at Marvel Studios and one of the guiding hands behind the fourth Captain America film. But we knew if we jumped right back into the Avengers after Endgame, we wouldn't give people a chance to miss it. Moore notes that the very best Avengers teams across the history of Marvel comics have had Captain America at the centre. And so after Steve Rogers handed his shield over to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the MCU had to spend time building Wilson up into the kind of leader he needed to be. That takes time, in part because Wilson did not take to the role of Captain America easily. The six-part Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, explored his struggles with that transition. Thankfully, by the events of Brave New World, Wilson wears the red, white and blue with pride. But just as he has overcome the challenge of becoming Captain America, hes presented with a whole new, more daunting task: to become the leader of a new Avengers team. PlayAs revealed in a pre-release marketing clip, Brave New Worlds opening act sees President Ross (played by Harrison Ford, who takes over from the late William Hurt) ask Wilson to restart the Avengers project. Long-term fans may understandably be a little confused by this. Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross is the man who established the Sokovia Accords, the superhero registration act that caused a civil war. So why would the man infamous for splitting up the Avengers want to see them reassembled? He was a guy who had this real legacy that could maybe be defined by his anger, agrees Brave New Worlds director, Julius Onah. But the man that we're meeting now is a man who is an elder statesman, who's a diplomat, who's turning a new leaf, who sees and understands the errors of his past and wants to do better. [He wants to initiate] the Avengers because they could be a benefit to the world. Ross is a general, so certainly he understands what a tactical advantage is.Of course, President Ross doesnt plan to recreate the Avengers exactly as they once were. As we saw in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America is now an official United States government role. And in the opening of Brave New World, Wilson is working directly with the President. All this means that a Captain America-led Avengers team would also effectively be a branch of the US defence department. Ross is the man who passed the Sokovia Accords, says Moore. He certainly realized that the Avengers left unchecked may not be the best idea for anyone. And so I certainly think he understands that power is more beneficial to him if it's under his command, and he figures why not do it first before somebody beats me to the punch.Sam Wilson must now step up to Captain America's ultimate responsibility: leading the Avengers. | Image credit: Disney / Marvel StudiosBut President Ross presumably isnt interested in reassembling the Avengers because he knows theyre needed for a couple of films in the future. The more likely explanation for Ross sudden interest in a superhero team is the discovery of a world-changing substance. Remember the Celestial that was turned to stone at the end of Eternals? Well, as revealed at San Diego Comic Con 2024, the MCUs scientists have discovered its a source of Adamantium, Marvels best-known super metal and a precious alternative to Wakandas heavily-defended Vibranium. With this miracle metal just sitting out there in the ocean, its open season for every nation on earth. So if theres about to be an Adamantium arms race, it makes sense to have a few superheroes on your side.I think certainly any nation that has a group of Avengers has a leg up over anyone else, says Moore. And Ross is a general, so certainly he understands what a tactical advantage is!How Sam Wilson/Falcon Became Captain America in the ComicsIf there is an underlying motive to this new Avengers team, it means that the working relationship between President Ross and Sam Wilsons Captain America isnt likely to be smooth sailing. Not that this was going to be an easy partnership to begin with, of course. Steve Rogers was resolutely anti-government control, and Wilson has spent his entire superhero career trying to live up to his predecessors values. I really focused on the emotional journey that Sam was taking, says Onah. It was really cool to then put him opposite somebody who had divided the Avengers in the past. Because of that history, Sam was put into prison. The Sokovia Accords, all the stuff that Ross pushed forward as Secretary of State [came into play]. These are things that when these two men walk into a room, that tension between them is palpable. Perhaps it will be Walker and his morally-flexible companions who actually become the Presidents Avengers. Ross nickname is Thunderbolt, after all.All that considered, its very possible that Sam Wilson is not the man President Ross is looking for. And so who will run this government-owned and operated Avengers team if not Captain America? The answer may lie in 2025s second MCU project, Thunderbolts, which arrives just a few months after Brave New World. Thunderbolts features a rag-tag team of anti-heroes including John Walker, the man who took up the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier only to violently disgrace the legacy Steve Rogers left behind. Perhaps it will be Walker and his morally-flexible companions who actually become the Presidents Avengers, then. Ross nickname is Thunderbolt, after all.If thats how things play out, Wilson would be free to set up his own, independent team of superheroes, just in time for the imminent arrival of Robert Downey Jr.s Doctor Doom in 2026s Avengers: Doomsday. But regardless of the details, Brave New World acts as the next step on the road that Wilson began the moment he took up the shield: the inevitable path to becoming the leader of the Avengers. Knowing that this would be the first movie to deal with the assembly of the next Avengers team, Onah was excited to get Wilson ready for what lies ahead. Historically the Avengers have been led by a Captain America, and Sam Wilson is very much so a worthy one, Onah says. But part of telling this story is also reinforcing, illustrating, and dramatizing for an audience: why [is he worthy]? PlayThat worthiness comes from Wilsons empathy, which Onah describes as the characters superpower. As any MCU fan knows, Wilson is simply just a man with a shield and a pair of mechanical wings. And sure, he can punch and kick pretty well. But it's his ability to understand the perspective of his allies and enemies that allows him to wield the shield specifically, the values that disc of Vibranium represents with effectiveness. I think that's what makes him a Captain America of this moment, Onah says.I don't think Sam would be prepared to lead the Avengers until he truly believed that he was Captain America, Moore adds. And our goal as filmmakers was to take him on a journey of questioning whether or not he made the right decision. Hopefully by the end, [well have] him and the audience go There certainly could be no one else. He is Captain America, and hopefully he takes the tools from this movie to be able to lead the Avengers.Wilson will need to get a move on. After Brave New World, only two movies stand between us and Avengers: Doomsday. And so it seems likely that Captain America will make appearances in both Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps as he attempts to recruit his team ahead of 2026s big event. Its certainly a much shorter road than the five films that led into 2012s The Avengers, but hopefully the likes of Spider-Man, Thor, and Bruce Banner are just waiting for the call, anyway. Whatever the case, the assembly of Avengers 2.0 begins here. Matt Purslow is IGN's Senior Features Editor.

  • Revisiting Harrison Fords One Oscar-Nominated Performance
    www.denofgeek.com
Harrison Ford has only been nominated for an Oscar once in his career. Its a strange thing to remember when considering one of the most prolific and defining movie stars of his generation. This is the man who was Indiana Jones, Han Solo, and Rick Deckard, to name but a few. For many he also remains the best Jack Ryan, and emanates a world-weary grumpiness that is like a blast from the Humphrey Bogart pasta comparison that Steven Spielberg and Sydney Pollock both invited by casting Ford in Bogie-inspired roles.Yet unlike Bogart, who won an Oscar for The African Queen and was nominated on two other occasions, Ford only garnered the Academys attention once, and it was for a superb if regrettably less-than-fully-appreciated thriller, which released 40 years ago this month: Peter Weirs Witness. As a sophisticated and surprisingly economical thriller with a hard R-rating and a downbeat ending, Witness is a textbook definition of the type of movie they dont make anymore. Its a medium-budgeted studio programmer for adults that somehow cultivated enough class and humanity to be remembered by the Academy almost a full year later after its release. In addition to Ford getting a Best Actor nomination, Witness was also nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Cinematographyalbeit the only award it won was for Best Original Screenplay, courtesy of William Kelley, Pamela Wallace, and Earl W. Wallace. The screenplay in Witness is excellent, yet it is the quiet authenticity cradled by the films Australian director, and his ability to recognize that same stoic naturalism in one of the 1980s biggest movie stars, which made Witness such a striking film, as well as one of the most important in Fords career.Prior to starring in this movie about a copper forced to go to ground among the Amish, Ford had proven himself to be one of the more popular names in the new decade. In the eight years before Witness, hed starred in three Star Wars movies and two Indiana Jones flicks. He was also in the highly ambitious Ridley Scott flop, Blade Runner (1982), plus several other works that relied on Fords then-youthful charisma, such as when he played fast-talking Tommy opposite Gene Wilders accidental gunfighter in The Frisco Kid (1979).Witness was something different, however. In retrospect, it would be the first of the star vehicles where Ford would angrily point at castmates and righteously explain the difference between right and wrong. One might even say it was the first of Fords middle-aged roles, paving the way for Jack Ryan, Dr. Richard Kimble, and a host of other morally indignant heroes of a certain age. Yet the beauty of John Book, Fords protagonist in Witness, is that he is neither a hero nor the moral center of the story. In fact, he exists at an ethical crossroads where he must remain in perpetual twilight between our modern worldwithin which Fords curmudgeony charm has always felt a bit like an anachronismand the actual ancient way of life he meets in the film as a stranger and interloper. That is certainly how the Amish community at the heart of Witness perceive John Book when he shows up on their doorstep with a bullet hole in his side and a gun he needs to hide. Moments earlier, he did this community a service by personally taking on the safety of young single Amish mother Rachel Lapp (Kelly McGillis) and her son Samuel (Lukas Haas). At the beginning of the picture, little Samuel witnessed the brutal murder of an undercover police detective byas we soon learntwo other cops caught up in the drug trade. And after his own police chief (Josef Sommer) attempts to cover up the deed by having Book shot and bad men sent for Rachel and her inconvenient son, a half-dead John takes the mother and child home to their Amish farm. Books crooked brothers in blue do not know which among the many Amish and Mennonite communities around Pennsylvania theyve vanished off to, and this buys Book time to heal. But its also just long enough for him to learn there can be no true middle ground for himself and Rachels slowly growing attraction. The above could easily read as the setup of a by-the-numbers thriller about dirty cops and movie stars caught in a high-concept. Ford would, in fact, make many such films in the decades to come. However, the power of Witness hails from the spartan instincts of Weir and Ford, two talents who seemed to intuitively understand how to excavate the credibility of a character or story, no matter how sensationalistic or nakedly commercial.Indeed, McGillis would star in one of the bigger high-concept hits of the 80s a year later when she appeared opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun. But in Witness, she gets to play an actual character in a film that has the good grace to realize the most important things are often left unspoken.Theyre seen for certain. Witnessed, even, as we all can plainly notice in the sequence where Book introduces Rachel to the velvety wonder of Sam Cooke one night in her late husbands barn. It is there that Book and the Amish have uneasily hidden the police detectives shot up car, and where he must hunker over the vehicles engine by candlelight if he wishes to ever drive away from this place.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! In the sequence, Ford reveals the inherent handiness of his character, working as resolutely in oil and engine grease as we later see Amish men in Rachels community build from wood and hammers. However, the alien nature of Books metal and chrome carriage, his electric lights and music, is what captures Rachels imagination. There is an unavoidable attraction between the two that is never once uttered aloud or acknowledged beyond a stolen kiss much later in the picture. But it is there in the dancing shadows and beamers as the two idle to (What a) Wonderful World. So many of Fords best performances, though, rely on whats beneath the surface. At the top of the iceberg, its easy to see why he became a star: a flashy smile attached to good looks that can sit as comfortably in a leather jacket as a tweed sport coatand sometimes in the same movie, as was the case with the signature Indiana Jones role. But despite having the vibrant masculinity of a Golden Age movie star, there was always a quiet wounded intellectualism beneath the surface of Fords screen persona. These competing sensibilities were used to comic effect by Spielberg, but in Weirs hands they become something forlorn and tragic. There is a vulnerability to the Book character that makes Rachels attraction palpable, but there is also an aggression and darkness too that dooms him to be incompatible in her world. In some ways, it complements the Amish lifestyle as seen in a terrific and elongated barn-raising sequence. It is again Weirs commitment to the truth of whatever world he is building that a movie like Witness can stop for a full five minutes of silent cinema. It is really only Maurice Jarres uncharacteristically synthesized score which gives sound to a sequence where Book joins Rachels father and neighbors, including rival beau Daniel (Alexander Godunov), in building a barn. The lack of dialogue, like the barn itself, is a monument to the antiquated pleasures and simplicity of an Amish lifestyle. But the electronic nature of the music betrays what an awkward fit Book and this story is in this culture. Soon enough that incongruity becomes bitterly inescapable. Hence the most violent scene in the movie is not the opening where a man is stabbed to death in front of a child, nor is it the end of the film where Book in turn kills those killers, one through a horrible suffocation while being buried alive in grain. Those scenes are hard to watch, but they pale in comparison to a sequence where Fordwhile still dressed in an Amish mans hat and hooksbrutalizes a redneck tourist whos driven to town to gawk at Amish folk. The actual fisticuff stunt work involved in Ford beating up some meatheads is basic, the sound effects pedestrian. But it is the bubbling look of anger and hostility in Fords countenance that causes sincere discomfort. Viewers are keyed into the fact a volcano is about to erupt, and the rage is so convincing that when copious amounts of fake blood are smeared across the face of the extra he lays out, you want to look away. Something beautiful has been violated; the lovely daydream between Ford and McGillis characters shattered into a million pieces.Witness is nominally a thriller, but in practice its a doomed romance. And the nature of that ruination is written entirely in Fords performance and its equal measures of sensitivity and wrath, intelligence and barbarism. It was a turn worthy of an Oscar nomination. Forty years later, it remains a gem in Fords catalog, and perhaps an indictment of the Academy since more of its ilk, including from this star, have gone so unrecognized.

  • Minted's Top Illustrator Has an Unexpected BackstoryAnd Her Pieces Could Be Yours
    www.housebeautiful.com
At House Beautiful, one of the most highly anticipated events of our year is the annual Whole Home project. Each year, we search the country for a location that we're excited to explore with our readers and tap a group of esteemed architects and interior designers to create the most beautiful, design-forward home imaginable. Artist Teju RevalOur seventh annual Whole Home is located in Asheville, North Carolina, and the finished project is nothing short of stunning. To make it even more special, we partnered with Minted artist Teju Reval, who illustrated 16 pictures of the entire home, spanning spaces both inside and out. Rendered in her signature hand-drawn style, her work perfectly captures the cutting-edge allure and timeless charm of this mountainside vacation home. We recently caught up with Teju to talk about how she began illustrating for Minted (her journey is not what you'd expect!), the details of her creative process, and what it was like to take on this unique artistic project to commemorate our 2024 Whole Home.Related StoryTeju RevalThe living room, designed by Dane Austin.House Beautiful: Can you share a bit about your journey as an artist and what led you to work with Minted?Teju Reval: I come from a computer science engineering and business background, but creating art always gave me a lot of joy, so I decided to become a full-time artist in 2013. I didn't really have a plan, I just dove into it. I started exploring all avenuesI did art shows; I started selling my art on online marketplaces; I did art workshops, etc. And then I stumbled upon Minted and instantly admired their aesthetic and started submitting to their Design Challenges in the hope that someday my art would be selected for their beautiful products. And that is how I got hooked on designing for Minted.HB: As a Minted artist, how has your experience shaped your approach to illustrating spaces in a way that resonates with people? How has working with Minted influenced your journey as an artist?TR: Over the years, I have seen people appreciate art that reflects life in its true form. So capturing the essence of a space in a fun and appealing way while maintaining a trend-forward and modern look was my goal when illustrating for this project. Minted has been instrumental in providing a platform to hone my skills and be adept with design trends and techniques due to the sheer number and variety of products we design for. It was important to showcase the painterly style of illustrating whilst maintaining the designer's essence of a clean design aesthetic and modern decor.HB: How would you describe your artistic style, and how did you adapt it to create illustrations for the Whole Home project?TR: My artistic style is primarily very hand-drawn and has the rawness of traditional media as opposed to digital perfection. When I was given the wonderful opportunity of illustrating for the Whole Home project, I tried out illustrating the interiors in a variety of media (charcoal, ink, gouache, and colored pencils). Although I enjoy illustrating with different media for different projects, we chose gouache as the medium for this project due to its gorgeous colors and unique look for print and publishing. I would compile each room's mood boards, design elements, and mockups. Next, I would start sketching the space out, painting with gouache, and scanning it into Photoshop for editing and digitizing. HB: Were there any specific techniques from your personal style that you incorporated into the illustrations, and which did you feel were the most important to showcase?TR: I tried to maintain the rawness of hand-drawn illustrations by highlighting the thick paints and brush strokes of painting with gouache. It was important to showcase the painterly style of illustrating whilst maintaining the designer's essence of a clean design aesthetic and modern decor. But my most favorite was illustrating Heidi Woodman's owner's suite. The rich colors of the interiors and wallpaper were perfect for rendering and recreating with paint. HB: How did working with the team of designers challenge or expand your artistic approach during this project?TR: It was wonderful to work with the amazing Hearst, Whole Home, and designer teams. They provided me with all the resources I needed for visualizing each room. It included mood boards, photographs, mockups, and details on the individual furnishings and fabrics. The team on the ground even sent me work-in-progress install imagery so I could get a better visualization of the spaces to illustrate. It was challenging at times to visualize and illustrate a space based on the designer's vision when the decor was still a work in progress and it had yet to be installed. Sometimes we had to move around the position of the furniture or add extra accessories. But that is what made this project very uniqueit was like nothing I had ever worked on before and at the same time it was extremely satisfying, rewarding, and super fun.Teju RevalThe outdoor space, designed by Curated Nest.HB: What was the most rewarding part of working with House Beautiful and bringing this project to life?TR: Getting to illustrate the visions of some of the best interior designers in the industry was the highlight of this project. For an artist, the subject matter is key so I felt really fortunate to be given an opportunity to illustrate the Whole Home. It was simply wonderful and very fulfilling to draw and paint such tastefully curated spaces and decor. HB: For those who would like to explore more of your art, where can people find your work?TR: My art can be found at Minted, The Met, Pottery Barn Kids, Disney, Target, Hudson Baby, and Kate & Laurel. For more, check out Teju's website and find her on Instagram.Shop Teju's PrintsDreamy Swan Print$30 at MintedCountryside I Print$34 at MintedDog Study PrintNow 92% Off$298 $24 at MintedBirds I PrintNow 86% Off$250 $34 at MintedFollow House Beautiful on Instagram and TikTok.
