tell him, Jim Tariffs will blow a hole in the US auto industry, says Ford CEO A CEO speaking out against a Trump administration policy seems refreshing. Jonathan M. Programs to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion are being canceled, and seven-figure checks were sent to his inauguration fund by CEOs like Apple's Tim Cook. The behavior from the Oval Office is mirrored by the rest of the administration, which is why it was a little surprising to see the CEO of a major company speak out against current US government policies. But that's exactly what Ford President and CEO Jim Farley has done.Speaking at a conference, Farley said that "President Trump has talked a lot about making our US auto industry stronger," but that "so far what we're seeing is a lot of cost and chaos," reported Automotive News.During the election, Trump promised to enact heavy tariffs on a wide range of imports from countries across the globe. Among those particularly targeted were Canada and Mexico. The two countries share borders with the US and, for many years, were joined in a free-trade association that encouraged US companies to set up factories in Canada and Mexico to take advantage of lower wages. The US has had to pause some of these new tariffs almost immediately, and the proposed 25 percent tariffs against any Canadian or Mexican imports have been delayed for a month. But yesterday, the president imposed 25 percent tariffs on any imported steel or aluminum. When last in office, Trump also imposed tariffs on steel (25 percent) and aluminum (10 percent), igniting a trade war and cutting US steel imports by far more than domestic steel production was able to rise to meet it."Let's be real honest: long-term, 25 percent tariffs across the Mexican and Canadian border would blow a hole in the US industry that we have never seen," Farley said, pointing out that the tariffs would "give free rein" to OEMs that import their vehicles from Japan, South Korea, or Europe. As the CEO of Polestar told Ars last week, the main thing automakers want is clarity. The last they want is chaos, where the rules have changed from one day to the next based on whim. At the conference, Farley had a similar message. "They need to understand theres a lot of policy uncertainty here, but in the meantime, were scrambling to manage the company as professionals," he said.Jonathan M. GitlinAutomotive EditorJonathan M. It has been controversial for decades thanks to its high cost and many delays, but now there are hints that it may finally be on the chopping block. The trouble is, there arent any comparable alternatives no other rockets can carry as much mass as SLS can into space and the only operational backup is built by Elon Musks firm SpaceX. That is down to two main reasons the first being that the qubits, or quantum bits, that make up todays machines still struggle with noise, or errors, that we are only just learning to correct. The second is that devices that could solve practical problems are expected to require many more qubits than even the biggest quantum computers currently have.In 2018,

  • The cultural wars have arrived at your Google Calendar
    www.businessinsider.com
Google's changes to its Calendar to remove the beginning of Pride and Black History Month sparked debate online.Google said "maintaining hundreds of moments" became unsustainable, and changes began in mid-2024.Since Trump's victory, Google has updated Google Maps in the US to say "Gulf of America" and ended diversity hiring targets. Some quiet changes to Google Calendar have elicited a loud response as the culture wars play out in real time online.Google has removed cultural observances including Pride Day, Women's History Month, Black History Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Jewish Heritage Month, and Indigenous People Month, among other celebratory events, from Google Calendar. As people heard about the change, which Google says began in mid-2024, some took to social media and internet forums to weigh in, with some criticizing and others praising the move. Some users on X referred to the change as "anti-DEI." Anothersaid that Pride and Black History Month would continue to be celebrated regardless of any product changes."Just because the calendars are being changed doesn't mean we have to," the X user wrote.Others applauded Google's move. Conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who led campaigns against what he described as "woke policies" at companies like Walmart, reacted to the change with a fire emoji. Others took the moment tothank Google. The removals from Google Calendar was first reported by The Verge on Friday after users online started highlighting the change.A Google spokesperson told Business Insider that "some years ago," its Calendar team began manually adding "a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world.""We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn't scalable or sustainable," the Google spokesperson said. The spokesperson said that sometime in mid-2024, Google Calendar began showing only public holidays and national observances from outside company timeanddate.com. Google said that users can still manually add "important moments" to their personal calendars by customizing which holidays they show or subscribe to.Timeanddate.com did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. While the removal of Pride and Black History Month by default on Google Calendar appeared to generate some of the strongest reactions from users across the political spectrum, Google also removed other celebratory events, including Teacher's Day.The online discourse over Google Calendar follows some other changes Google has made more recently since Trump's inauguration. Google Maps renamed the Gulf of Mexico to The Gulf of America for US users on Monday, following an executive order Trump issued in January. The company also recently ended diversity-related hiring goals. In a memo sent last week, Google said it would no longer pursue hiring targets tied to representation. The company also said it would review its DEI programs and initiatives."As a federal contractor, our teams are also evaluating changes required following recent court decisions and executive orders on this topic," a Google spokesperson previously said in a statement to BI about the search giant's DEI policies.Other companies, like Meta, have made similar policy changes since Trump's reelection. In January, Meta announced it would roll back its diversity programs and no longer have a team focused on DEI. The social media company also changed its content moderation guidelines and replaced fact-checkers with community notes.

  • My family is forgoing big vacations, and instead, we splurged on a big couch. It has brought us together like never before.
    www.businessinsider.com
I bought an insanely big couch that fits our family of six.I know I'm supposed to prioritize experiences over possessions, but I love this couch. It has brought my children closer to me both physically and emotionally. On New Year's Eve, 11 people sprawled across our ridiculously oversize couch, counting down to midnight. It was raucous and beautiful; it was exactly why my husband and I chose this massive piece of furniture. But I'm sometimes conflicted about the purchase because I'm repeatedly told that we should give our kids experiences instead of things. That advice instinctively seems true to me.My memories growing up are, for the most part, not of things I owned. They're of trips to New York to see my grandparents and hiking the Grand Canyon with my dad. They're of getting ready for school dances with my friends. I couldn't tell you what any of us wore, but I can tell you exactly what everyone's laugh sounded like.I want my four kids to have similar, noteworthy experiences. But there have been a few possessions that I treasure as much as our experiences. One of them is my new couch. Yep. Couch. When we needed a new couch, we went ridiculously bigWhen we replaced the sad lump that was our old couch, we tried out so many in the showroom. Most of them just wouldn't fit six people, like my large family. When we finally found the right couch for us, it was obscenely huge. It was a sectional, with a back and two long sides so everyone could stretch their lanky legs. I immediately worried about the size and scale of our furniture. I knew it would throw off the whole scale of our room, but I also knew it could comfortably sit all of us at once.Since the couch was so big, its price was big, too. We could have spent that money on traveling as a family. That's when I went back to the debate: What's more important experiences or things? But when I pictured all of us lounging on the couch together, I knew it was the right thing for our family. So we bought the couch. Now, you can't do anything in our family room except sit on our couch. There's no space for anything else. The couch has swallowed up the entire living room, leaving a tiny, single-file pathway into and out of the room. It's perfect. My teenagers are connecting with me on a whole new level thanks to the couchI knew the couch would bring my family together physically, but I didn't imagine the emotional bond it would create for us.My teens often flop dramatically on the couch. They throw their bodies down and sprawl out and make pillow nests. They burrow under piles of blankets. They toss their legs across other people, lay on their siblings or friends, and generally take up all the room. And sometimes, they'll even get cozy with me.These teens bristle when I'm affectionate in public. Hugging is not approved. But when we're having a movie night, someone will slowly lean against me until they're propped against my shoulder or sprawled on my lap. It's like meeting a strange animal: If I don't make sudden movements, they start warming up to me.They'll also talk to me when we're all hanging out on the couch. I don't know if their defenses go down as it gets later or if we're just all relaxed and comfy. But when I ask them how their day was after school, I get a grunt or a sigh. It's not until we're all chilling out at night on the couch that I hear about worries over classes, friend troubles, or what they're thinking as college decisions loom.If we buy things that align with our values, they can be just as important as experiencesI'm still mostly an experience-loving person. But really, that's what the couch is about. Our TV-watching experiences might not be as exciting as trips or concerts, but warm memories of evenings together are just as good. I want to be the place where all my kids' friends hang out, and this couch helped get us there. We still take vacations, although, with six of us, they're cheaper road trips instead of big resort trips. But I'll spend good money on things for our home that reinforce our values any day: instruments, board games, and pizza for a rowdy group of teens hanging out on my new couch. I'd buy anything that encourages people to be together in my house. They may just be things, but they're giving us some great memories.

  • Has Trumps agenda stalled?
    www.vox.com
Welcome to The Logoff. Today Im focusing on the Trump administrations string of court setbacks, which, for now, seem to be slowing down what once looked like a MAGA juggernaut. Whats the latest? Several court rulings this week have stalled the Trump administrations efforts to expand the presidents power. Those include:A federal judge on Monday froze Trumps plans to cut $4 billion from health research grants.Another further delayed the deadline for federal workers to accept Elon Musks offer for a deferred resignation.Yet another judge ruled the administration was violating his previous order to unfreeze federal spending threatening Trump officials with contempt if they didnt comply.Does this mean all these initiatives are dead? Not at all. Nearly all of these orders are judges saying hold on a minute, telling the Trump administration to wait to go through with its plans while the courts decide if theyre legal. And in nearly all of the cases, the Trump administration is asking higher courts to let them go forward during the judicial deliberations. So why does just a freeze matter? Because the administration has shown the ability to take irreparable actions while the courts deliberate. Take the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which Trumps team effectively dismantled during their first week. Courts have since put some of those actions on hold, but even if the agency survives, itll have suffered longstanding damage. Now, as the administration tries to repeat that process elsewhere in government, these judicial pauses are making the process far more difficult.Whats the big picture? For weeks, it appeared the Trump administration was unstoppable, particularly as it took power that the Constitution reserves for Congress. But now the judicial branch is asserting itself, demanding the right to review many of Trumps actions before they take full effect. What if Trump simply ignores the courts? Simply put, we dont know, because theres very little precedent in US history. What we do know is that it would trigger a constitutional crisis whose resolution could redefine our system of government. And with that, its time to log off ...A looming constitutional crisis is not a particularly comforting note to end on. So I want to point you all to this great Mashable story of two people finding each other and falling in love. Without further ado, heres How one tweet led me to meet my partner.See More:

  • Shudder Just Got One of the Wildest Retro Zombie Movies Ever
    gizmodo.com
You can keep your fast-moving zombies, 28 Years Later. The slowest zombies to perhaps ever feature in a movie can be found in Tombs of the Blind Dead, a 1972 cult film that takes many cues from George A. Romeros Night of the Living Dead but also weaves in plenty of European sleaze. These hungry ghouls hunt their prey at the speed of molasses, and that includes multiple scenes in which they ride slow-motion horses. Still, even a shuffling chase can be high-tension, especially when theres a bunch of crumbling Knights Templar corpses on your trail who have two purposes in their undead lives: to worship Satan, and to consume human flesh. Our hapless characters find this out the hard way when they all have various reasons to visit Berzano, a ruined medieval town in the otherwise picturesque landscape near the border of Spain and Portugal (conveniently, the two countries that co-produced Tombs of the Blind Dead). After reconnecting by chance at a Lisbon swimming pool, former boarding-school roommates Bette (Lone Fleming) and Virginia (Mara Elena Arpn) impulsively decide to spend a weekend in the country with Roger (Csar Burner), Virginias sort-of boyfriend who immediately takes a flirtatious interest in Bette. Its unclear if Virginia is more angry with Roger or Bettethanks to a soft-focus flashback, we learn they were gal pals with benefits in their teen yearsbut shes agitated enough to jump off a moving train to get away from the situation. Its just her luck that Barzanos crumbling buildings are visible from her escape point, so she makes her way there, not realizing shes chosen the worst possible place to enjoy a little solitude. We get a first-hand look at its lurking horrorsand how easily theyre awakenedbut in keeping with its fondness for unhurried pacing, Tombs of the Blind Dead takes its time bringing the other characters into the fold. Bette and Roger grow concerned when Virginia doesnt return, and their worries compound when a waitress in the area tells them Barzano is cursedso cursed, in fact, that locals avoid even talking about it. Modern folks dont believe such tales, she tells them, but its clear she 100% believes all the grim legends about the place. Tombs of the Blind Dead checks off tropes that giallo and European horror fans will immediately recognize, including completely ineffective cops, a leering morgue attendant, and a disheveled professor overflowing with all the exposition anyone could ever need (complete with flashback to the Knights Templar breaking very bad, in this case). There are also delightful details included for no reason other than they add to the shock value, including Bettes day job working in a warehouse full of creepy mannequins. Why mannequins? Well, why not? Why is it next door to the morgue? Why not?Eventually, Virginias body (thoroughly chomped by dozens of teeth) turns up and the mysteries only deependespite that professor explaining everything, including this fun fact: the zombies are blind not because theyre centuries old and rotted through, but because when they were hanged after being excommunicated, crows pecked their peepers out. Bette and Roger, who seemingly cant stand each other after being so giggly when they met, decide to play detective. This leads to exponentially more agony, especially when they enlist a greasy smuggler and his aggressively horny girlfriend as backup, but theres absolutely majestic pay-off to all of this in act three. The tidbit that the zombies hunt by sound since they have no eyes finally gets its big moment, as does a recurring bit where the brakeman on the train that runs past Barzano refuses to stop for any reason. When the creatures mount their horses and launch a climactic pursuit at a speed a snail would easily outrun, what happens next may very well signal the start of the apocalypse. The most glacially paced apocalypse ever, but still: sluggish doom awaits us all.Tombs of the Blind Dead is now streaming on Shudder. Want more io9 news? • AI in 2025: Generative Tech, Robots, and Emerging Risks
    www.technewsworld.com
The past year saw artificial intelligence (AI) push the boundaries of whats possible, with industries racing to integrate its capabilities to boost productivity and automate complex tasks. In 2024, AI advancements accelerated at a pace outstripping previous high-tech innovations, setting the stage for even greater disruption ahead. But with this rapid progress comes a risk: without human oversight, AIs missteps could be just as monumental as its breakthroughs.Generative and agentic AI are already enhancing users ability to obtain sophisticated content across various media, while AI-powered health care tools are reshaping diagnostics outperforming human physicians in certain tasks. These developments signal a looming transformation in health care delivery, with AI poised to play an even bigger role in business and industrial operations. The power of AI will also birth humanoid agents, noted Anders Indset, author and deep-tech investor in exponential technologies such as AI, quantum technology, health tech, and cybersecurity. As we step into 2025, the technology landscape is rapidly evolving, with a spotlight on humanoid agents. This year began with excitement surrounding large language models (LLMs) but is set to end with groundbreaking advancements in autonomous humanoid robots, Indset told TechNewsWorld. In 2024, the development of robots surged, with innovations that once seemed far off now coming into view. The long-anticipated release of fully autonomous humanoids previously confined to industrial settings is approaching, he observed. The arrival of 2025 brings anticipation for the widespread adoption of AI in robotics, enhanced human-robot interactions, and the rise of robotics-as-a-service (RaaS) models. These will make advanced robotic solutions accessible to more industries, Indset explained, describing the ensuing transformative period for the robotics industry.Humanoid agents will reshape our interactions with technology and expand the possibilities for AI applications across different domains, he predicted.AIs Expanding Role in Cybersecurity and BiosecurityAI will play an increasingly critical role in cyberwarfare, warned Alejandro Rivas-Vasquez, global head of digital forensics and incident response at NCC Group. AI and machine learning (ML) will make cyberwarfare more deadly, with collateral damage outside of conflict zones due to hyper-connectivity, he offered.Cybersecurity defenses, already a successful tool for digital warriors, will extend beyond protecting digital systems to safeguarding people directly through implantable technology. Neural interfaces, bio-augmentation, authentication chips, and advanced medical implants will revolutionize human interaction with technology.According to Bobbie Walker, managing consultant at NCC Group, these innovations will also introduce significant risks. Hackers could exploit neural interfaces to control actions or manipulate perceptions, leading to cognitive manipulation and breaches of personal autonomy. Continuous monitoring of health and behavioral data through implants raises substantial privacy concerns, with risks of misuse by malicious actors or invasive government surveillance, Walker told TechNewsWorld. To mitigate these risks, new frameworks bridging technology, health care, and privacy regulations will be essential. Walker cautioned that standards for digital bioethics and ISO standards for bio-cybersecurity will help define safe practices for integrating technology into the human body while addressing ethical dilemmas. The emerging field of cyber-biosecurity will push us to rethink cybersecurity boundaries, ensuring that technology integrated into our bodies is secure, ethical, and protective of the individuals using it, she added.According to Walker, early studies on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) show that adversarial inputs can trick these devices, highlighting the potential for abuse. As implants evolve, the risks of state-sponsored cyberwarfare and privacy breaches grow, emphasizing the need for robust security measures and ethical considerations.AI-Driven Data Backup Raises Security ConcernsSebastian Straub, principal solution architect at N2WS, stated that AI advancements better equip organizations to resume operations after natural disasters, power outages, and cyberattacks. AI automation will enhance operational efficiency by addressing human shortcomings.AI-powered backup automation will reduce the need for administrative intervention to near zero, he explained. AI will learn the intricate patterns of data usage, compliance requirements, and organizational needs. Moreover, AI will become a proactive data management expert, autonomously determining what needs to be backed up and when, including adherence to compliance standards like GDPR, HIPAA, or PCI DSS.But Straub warned that as this level of AI dominance dramatically transforms disaster recovery processes, errors will occur through the learning process. In 2025, we will see that AI is not a silver bullet. Relying on machines to automate disaster recovery will lead to mistakes. There will be unfortunate breaches of trust and compliance violations as enterprises learn the hard way that humans need to be part of the DR decision-making process, Straub told TechNewsWorld.AIs Impact on Creativity and EducationFor many AI users, tools to help improve communication skills are already in steady use. ChatGPT and other AI writing tools will emphasize the value of human writing rather than a workaround for personal language tasks.Students and communicators will adjust from asking AI writing tools to produce work on their behalf to owning the content creation process from start to finish. They will leverage technology to edit, enhance, or expand original thinking, suggested Eric Wang, VP of AI at plagiarism detection firm Turnitin. Looking ahead, Wang told TechNewsWorld that writing would be recognized as a critical skill, not just in writing-focused areas of study but also in learning, working, and living environments. This change will manifest as the humanization of technology-enabled fields, roles, and companies. He sees the role of generative AI shifting, with early-stage usage helping to organize and expand ideas while later stages refine and enhance writing. For educators, AI can identify knowledge gaps early on and later provide transparency to facilitate student engagement.Hidden Risks of AI-Powered ModelsAccording to Michael Lieberman, CTO and co-founder of software development security platform Kusari, AI will become more widespread and challenging to detect. His concern lies with free models hosted on platforms. We have already seen cases where some models on these platforms were discovered to be malware. I expect such attacks to increase, though they will likely be more covert. These malicious models may include hidden backdoors or be intentionally trained to behave harmfully in specific scenarios, Lieberman told TechNewsWorld. He sees an increasing prevalence of data poisoning attacks aimed at manipulating LLMs and warns that most organizations do not train their own models.Instead, they rely on pre-trained models, often available for free. The lack of transparency regarding the origins of these models makes it easy for malicious actors to introduce harmful ones, he continued, citing the Hugging Face malware incident as an example.Future data poisoning efforts are likely to target major players like OpenAI, Meta, and Google, whose vast datasets make such attacks more challenging to detect. In 2025, attackers are likely to outpace defenders. Attackers are financially motivated, while defenders often struggle to secure adequate budgets since security is not typically viewed as a revenue driver. It may take a significant AI supply chain breach akin to the SolarWinds Sunburst incident to prompt the industry to take the threat seriously, Turnitins Wang concluded.
