  • Can anyone stop the french fry cartel?
    www.vox.com
The story of how french fries got to be ridiculously expensive starts really small, before making you scratch your head about the way the whole world works. The short version is that theres possibly an algorithm-driven conspiracy in which a literal potato cartel has been colluding to raise the price of all of our french fries. The long version goes like this: Plaintiffs have alleged in a set of lawsuits that the largest potato product manufacturers in the country the four that have cornered nearly the entire frozen potato market all put their sensitive market data into the same third-party software, which uses that aggregate data to spit out recommendations about how they should price their products. And that software has essentially been giving each company the same recommendations. If the CEOs of these four companies got in a room, and while they were all chomping on cigars, said, Hey, lets all set the price of our french fries at the exact same amount, that would be illegal. Whats allegedly happening is these companies are using this software in the same way theyd use that room. And there are plenty of people out there including people in the US government who say thats illegal. The question is whether theyre right. And it turns out the business practice at the heart of this case is happening all over the place. There have been big lawsuits and government investigations into how this is happening with our rent. Many landlords use a third-party app called RealPage, which takes landlord data and recommends rents. And renters have seen an increase in rental prices as a result. Meatpackers are doing a similar thing, as are hotels. Congressional legislation has been introduced to tackle some of this stuff head-on. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) co-sponsored a bill in 2024 that tried to combat landlords using third-party rental software to set prices. Recently, she introduced legislation that specifically targets algorithmic pricing practices. Those bills arent yet law and have a lot of congressional hurdles to overcome. In the meantime, there are class action lawsuits going on around this. In the event that they do come to some resolution, maybe youll see a notification along the lines of, Have you paid too much for french fries? You may be owed money, and youll get 92 cents in the mail. And then you can go buy, maybe, a quarter of a french fry. This piece originally ran in the Today, Explained newsletter. • Overwatch 2 Spotlight reveals Hero perks, new characters and a return to lootboxes
    www.dailystar.co.uk
Blizzard has revealed a whole host of changes coming to Overwatch 2, including Hero perks, lootboxes, and more, including the reveal of Season 15 and fresh HeroesTech18:32, 12 Feb 2025Updated 18:44, 12 Feb 2025Freya is the next character to join the Overwatch 2 roster(Image: Blizzard)Blizzard has big plans for Overwatch 2, after the company held an Overwatch 2 Spotlight event today. The event, a first for the series which began in 2016, has revealed features to counter the threat posed by Marvel Rivals, and there's a whole host coming to the shooter.Hero Perks, a Competitive Rank reset, fresh competitive weapons and more were shown off, as well as a return to loot box rewards. Then there's the reveal of upcoming Heroes, including Freya and a water-manipulating unnamed character coming in Season 18.Here's everything included, as well as all we know about Overwatch 1-like 'Classic Modes' which were revealed.Content cannot be displayed without consentAs Blizzard suggests, Hero Perks are possibly the biggest shake-up in Overwatch's history. As players play through a match, they'll earn upgrades, like improved turrets for Torbjorn or the option to have them stick to walls. These are colossal shifts, and each Hero will have a bunch of upgrades to earn, with one major and one minor perk throughout each match. They'll be adjusted on a "regular cadence", Blizzard says, but expect some of them to change how you play. They're arriving as part of Season 15, which kicks off on February 18. Weapon charms and fresh 'Galactic' weapon skins will be offered during Season 15 and there's a rank reset coming, too.Hero Bans, which have been a big request from the fanbase, are also arriving, with the idea to "punch up" at frustrating heroes, rather than "punching down" on popular ones.Map voting and improved Hero information is coming, with detailed stats for the hero information screen.Perhaps the biggest surprise is the return of Loot Box rewards, with free loot boxes in the Battle Pass and other free ways to earn them. Given Overwatch popularised them in the first place, it'll be interesting to see how fair they feel. So, what about 6v6? One of the biggest controversies when the sequel arrived was the move to 5v5, but 6v6 will get its own competitive queue in Season 15.Limited Time modes will see the return of the GOATs meta, too, with Overwatch running it back to 2019 in 6v6.There's a new format for OWCS, too, with China and Australia getting to compete, too.Content cannot be displayed without consentContent cannot be displayed without consentFreya is the next Hero coming to Overwatch 2. She's a bounty hunter, with an explosive crossbow and a cape that helps her hover in the air.She aims to "own the battlefield" with rapid-fire bolts, and can "turn targets into fireworks" with an explosive mode. She's got a high skill ceiling, Blizzard says.Season 18 brings in Hero 44, codenamed Aqua, but outside of a quick look, we're still mostly in the dark about what he'll offer.A new Stadium mode is coming with Season 16, with players able to spend currency in-game on mods to buff attacks, add new abilities, and more, while traits will improve each character's skills, letting you buff things like Soldier 76's healing ability. In a shock move, it'll add a third-person perspective, too.Article continues belowExamples given are Reaper being able to fly, auto-resurrections, and more. It sounds a little like a MOBA, and sounds great for flexing your creativity across seven rounds. There are more cosmetics to unlock, too, including a March 2025 update that brings another crossover with LE SSERAFIM, while fresh maps for Atlantic Arcology and Tokyo will arrive later this year. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

  • Scarlett Johansson Calls for New AI Laws After Fake Video of Her Goes Viral
    gizmodo.com
By Matthew Gault Published February 12, 2025 | Comments (1) | An AI generated image of actress Scarlett Johansson. Image via Instagram. Scarlett Johansson is calling for the U.S. government to reign in AI after she was featured in an anti-Kanye West video thats going viral on social media. The AI-generated video features prominent celebrities including Johansson, Drake, Natalie Portman, Steven Speilberg, Sam Altman, and Woody Allen all wearing a white T-shirt bearing a cartoon middle finger that contains a Star of David. The finger floats above the word KANYE. The video is a reaction to rapper Wests Super Bowl stunt. The pro-Nazi rapper bought ad space during the big game to drive people to his personal website. After the ad aired, West changed the website into a storefront with one item: a white T-shirt with a swastika on it. Shopify pulled the storefront after it went live. At first blush, the AI-generated video seems authentic. It opens on Johansson and is the kind of corny celeb-driven response weve come to expect. But the tell-tale signs of AI are there: bodies that dont match faces, younger versions of celebs, and strange artifacts. Johansson was upset. It has been brought to my attention by family members and friends that an AI-generated video featuring my likeness, in response to an antisemitic view, has been circulating online and gaining traction. I am a Jewish woman who has no tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech of any kind. But I also firmly believe that the potential for hate speech multiplied by AI is a far greater threat than any one person who takes accountability for it. We must call out the misuse of AI, no matter its messaging, or we risk losing a hold on reality, Johansson said in a statement to People. She said shed been a victim of AI before and that there was a reckoning coming, one that the U.S. was ignoring. It is terrifying that the U.S. government is paralyzed when it comes to passing legislation that protects all of its citizens against the imminent dangers of AI, she said. Johansson was the voice of an advanced AI chatbot in the 2013 film Her. Since then, Sam Altman has been obsessed with making her the voice of ChatGPT. To hear her tell it, Altman and OpenAI approached her to be the voice of the chatbot and she refused. When OpenAI released its voiced ChatGPT model, one of the options sounded suspiciously like the actress and she sued. After Johansson went public, OpenAI pulled the voice.I urge the U.S. government to make the passing of legislation limiting A.I. use a top priority; it is a bipartisan issue that enormously affects the immediate future of humanity at large, Johansson said at the end of her statement to People about the AI video going viral. The video is the work of Ori Bejerano, a self-professed Generative AI Expert and an employee at the Tel Aviv-based ad firm Gitam BBDO. As of this writing, the video is still up. Bejerano is even taking a victory lap and posting news hits about his viral success on his timeline. There are videos and images on that Instagram account that are way more messed up than a fake video calling out Wests antisemitism though. The bulk of his account is weird AI-generated slop. Youve got all the hits: Bejerano casting himself as a noble astronaut, as a Roman bust next to inspirational quotes, and as Superman. Hes also got a disturbing video where far-right Israeli politician Itamar Ben-Gvir watches Teletubbies and falls asleep imagining a world where Donald Trump turns Gaza into Disneyland.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By James Whitbrook Published February 11, 2025 By Todd Feathers Published February 10, 2025 By Kyle Barr Published February 7, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published February 7, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published February 6, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published February 5, 2025

  • Apple TV+ Is Finally Available to Android Users Who Will Never Touch an iPhone
    gizmodo.com
By Florence Ion Published February 12, 2025 | Comments (4) | Yep, that's official Apple documentation you're seeing of its app on Android devices. Apple You won't have to "buy your mom an iPhone" to help her watch Ted Lasso. You can give her your old Android tablet. We were expecting an update to the iPhone SE this week. Instead, we got Apple TV+ on Android. Apple has officially made the app available for Android users through the Google Play store. You wont have to have an Apple device to sign up for the service or even get billed for it. Its one less reason for Tim Cook to tell you to buy your mom an iPhone. The Apple TV+ app is now available in the Google Play store for Android devices of all types. Apple developed the app using the latest frameworks. It works with any device running Android 10 and up. The app will adapt to all displays, from foldable to tablets. That means the old tablet you have lying around could become a dedicatedSeverance tablet. Wouldnt that be something? You dont need an existing Apple ID to subscribe to Apple TV+. Apple will let you sign up for the service through the app and pay for the subscription through Google Play. Androids built-in payment system will handle all the billing. You can even cancel your Apple TV+ subscription using the Google Play Store app instead of going through Apple. This is the first time the Apple TV+ app has been available on Android. Its only been available on Google TV, a living room product for large-screen entertainment devices. The Apple TV+ app works with Android smartphones and tablets as it does inside iOSs walled garden. You can use the Continue Watching feature to pick up on a show or movie you started on your phone. You can even download content for later to watch offline. The only thing you cant do is cast Apple TV+ to any other Google devices you have in the home. It isnt available in the app yet, though I imagine Apple will build it into a succeeding version. Whats going on here? Is Apple finally acquiescing to the idea that theres another mobile platform people would prefer to use? Hardly. This particular release of Apple TV+ on Android promotes Apples recent partnership with Major League Soccer (MLS). All the games will be available to stream on Apple TV+ subscribers later this month. Apple also has a deal with Major League Baseball (MLB) that will come into play once the season starts later this year. Its all to get in more users through Apples non-hardware offerings, especially since rival products have increased in pricelooking at you, YouTube TV. Its also a way for the company to justify its investment in producing and offering all that original content. Luckily, it has a few Oscar wins to stand on in marketing.Android users can download and install the app today for a week free of Apple TV+the same trial period Apple offers everyone. After that, its $10/month to keep watching the library or $100/year if you pay all at once.Apple TV+ Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Justin Carter Published February 9, 2025 By Germain Lussier Published February 7, 2025 By Cheryl Eddy Published February 4, 2025 By Cheryl Eddy Published January 31, 2025 By Germain Lussier Published January 31, 2025 By Cheryl Eddy Published January 21, 2025

  • Microsoft Research and Physics Wallah team up to enhance AI-based tutoring
    www.microsoft.com
In India, limited resources, geographical constraints, and economic factors present barriers to quality higher education for some students.A shortage of teachers, particularly in remote or low-income areas, makes it harder for students to receive the guidance they need to prepare for highly competitive professional and academic programs.Microsoft Research is developing new algorithms and techniques that are enabling Physics Wallah (opens in new tab), a growing educational company, to make its AI-based tutoring services more accurate and reliable, to better support students on their education journey. As in other countries, many Indian students purchase coaching and tutoring services to prepare for entrance exams at top institutions. This includes offline coaching, where hundreds of students meet in a classroom staffed by teachers covering a structured curriculum. Online coaching enables students to learn remotely in a virtual classroom. Hybrid coaching delivers virtual lessons in a physical classroom.Offline courses can cost as much as 100,000 Indian rupees a yearequivalent to hundreds of U.S. dollars. This puts them out of reach for many lower income students living in smaller and mid-sized Indian cities, as well as rural villages. Online courses are much more affordable. They allow students to work at their own pace by providing high-quality web-based content supported by teachers who work remotely.Vineet GovilMeeting this need is the mission of Physics Wallah. The company uses AI to offer on-demand tutoring at scale, curating volumes of standard science- and math-related content to provide the best answers. Some 2 million students use the Physics Wallah platform every day, at a fraction of the cost of offline tutoring. For example, its prep courses for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is required for admission to engineering and technology programs, and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a required entrance exam for medical and dental school candidates, cost between 4,200 and 4,500 rupees per year. Thats roughly 50 U.S. dollars. The mantra here really is how do we provide quality education in an affordable manner and accessible to every student, regardless of who they are or where they come from.Vineet Govil, Chief Technology and Product Officer, Physics Wallah TIMELINECelebrating 20 Years at Microsoft Research IndiaMicrosoft Research Indias collaboration with Physics Wallah is part of a 20-year legacy of supporting emerging Indian companies, underscored by the January 2025 announcement that Microsoft will invest $3 billion (opens in new tab) in cloud and AI infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of AI, skilling, and innovation. Physics Wallah has developed an AI-driven educational suite, Alakh AI, leveraging OpenAIs GPT-4o model through Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. Alakh AIs flagship offerings include AI Guru and the Smart Doubt Engine, both designed to transform the learning experience in and beyond the classroom.AI Guru acts as a personal academic tutor, delivering adaptive guidance based on a students progress, real-time question-solving, and customized content that evolves with their learning journey.Smart Doubt Engine is an AI tool through which students can ask questions (also known as doubts in Indian English) during live classes and receive instant responses.Additionally, the Alakh AI suite includes:AI Grader for subjective answer evaluation without human interventionSahayak for crafting hyper-personalized learning paths tailored to individual students needsThis innovative ecosystem elevates learning efficiency and accessibility for students.AI Guru in action A student asks, Explain Newtons First Law, and the AI tutor provides a detailed explanation along with two videos for further learning.Smart Doubt Engine in action A student asks a clarifying question during a live class, and the AI provides a detailed explanation in real time. How does AI Guru work?Lets say a student had a question about Newtons laws of motion, a core concept in physics. She would type her query into the AI Guru chat window (she could also just talk to it or upload an image from a textbook) and receive a text answer plus images derived from standard textbooks and curated content, typically in just a few seconds. AI Guru also provides a short video where a teacher offers additional context.Getting the technology rightThe Alakh AI suite is powered by OpenAIs foundational models GPT-4 and GPT-4o, integrated with a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architecture. It leverages Physics Wallahs rich repository of high-quality curated contentdeveloped and refined over several yearsalong with continuous updates from subject matter experts to ensure new materials, textbooks, tutorials, and question banks are seamlessly incorporated. Despite considerable progress, the existing AI sometimes falters when navigating complex academic problems. The accuracy level of todays large language models (LLMs) is not up to the mark where we can provide reliable and satisfactory answers to the students all the timespecifically, if its a hard mathematical problem involving complex equations, Govil said.Thats one important focus of the collaboration. Researchers from Microsoft Research are developing new algorithms and techniques to enhance the accuracy and reasoning capabilities of AI models. They are now collaborating with Physics Wallah to apply these advancements to the Alakh AI suite, improving its ability to solve complex problems and provide more reliable, step-by-step guidance to students. A key challenge is the nature of student queries, which are often ambiguous and involve multimodal inputstext, images, videos, or audiorequiring unified capabilities to address the problem. Many STEM problems require breaking down complex queries into logical sub-problems and applying high-order, step-by-step reasoning for consistency. Additionally, integrating domain-specific knowledge in advanced math, physics, chemistry, and biology requires contextualization and seamless retrieval of specialized, grade-appropriate information.Microsoft Research is working with Physics Wallah to move beyond traditional next-token prediction and develop AI systems that approach reliable, systematic, step-by-step problem-solving.That includes ongoing work to enhance the models reasoning capabilities and deliver more accurate query answers on complex JEE math problems. Instead of just providing the final answer, the underlying models now break problems into step-by-step solutions. That helps students learn how to solve the actual problems. The AI can also review student answers, detect mistakes, and give detailed feedback, acting as a personal tutor to guide students, improve their understanding, and enhance their learning experience.Microsoft research podcastIdeas: AI and democracy with Madeleine Daepp and Robert Osazuwa NessAs the biggest election year in history comes to an end, researchers Madeleine Daepp and Robert Osazuwa Ness and Democracy Forward GM Ginny Badanes discuss AIs impact on democracy, including the techs use in Taiwan and India.Listen nowOpens in a new tab Solving complex problems requires enhancing the reasoning capabilities of both large and small language models by training them to not just generate answers, but to systematically think through and reason about complex problems. This requires high-quality reasoning tracesdetailed, step-by-step breakdowns of logical problem-solving processes. To enable this, researchers collaborated with Physics Wallah to curate a dataset of 150,000 high-quality math reasoning traces. These traces serve as the foundation for training specialized small language models (SLMs) using supervised fine-tuning (SFT). Model performance is further refined through training on carefully curated on-policy preference data, ensuring alignment with high-quality reasoning standards. The teams current Phi-based models have already outperformed leading LLMs and other baselines on complex math problems.Building AI systems capable of human-like thinking and reasoning represents a significant challenge.Akshay Nambi, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research IndiaThe next step is to develop a self-evolving learning pipeline using online reinforcement learning techniques, allowing the model to continuously generate high-quality synthetic data that further enhances its capabilities. Additionally, researchers are building a reward model and integrating it with Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to optimize reasoning and improve inference-time decision-making.The goal is to develop tools that complement education. To do this, we are enhancing the models capabilities to process, break down, and solve problems step-by-step. We do this by incorporating high-quality data into training to teach the model how to approach such tasks, alongside algorithmic innovations that enable the model to think and reason more effectively.Opening new doors for studentsChandramouleswar ParidaGetting an education at a top university can be life changing for anyone. For Chandramouleswar Parida, it could change the lives of everyone in his home village in Baniatangi, Khordha, Odisha State, India. Chandra decided to become a doctor after watching his grandfather die from a heart attack. The nearest doctor who could have treated him was at a regional hospital 65 kilometers away.He could have been saved if certain procedures had been followed, Chandra said. He wants to study medicine, perhaps receiving advanced training overseas, and then return home. I want to be a doctor here in our village and serve our people, because there is a lack of treatment. Being a doctor is a very noble kind of job in this society.Chandra is the only student in Baniatangi Village, Khordha, Odisha, currently preparing for the NEET. Without Physics Wallah, students like Chandra would likely have no access to the support and resources that cant be found locally.Anushka Sunil DhanwadeAnother student, Anushka Sunil Dhanwade, is optimistic that Physics Wallah will help her dramatically improve her initial score on the NEET exam. While in 11th class, or grade, she joined an online NEET prep class with 800 students. But she struggled to follow the coursework, as the teachers tailored the content to the strongest students. After posting a low score on the NEET exam, her hopes of becoming a doctor were fading. But after a serious stomach illness reminded her of the value of having a doctor in her family, she tried again, this time with Physics Wallah and AI Guru. After finishing 12th class, she began preparing for NEET and plans to take the exams again in May, confident that she will increase her score.AI Guru has made my learning so smooth and easy because it provides me answers related to my study and study-related doubt just within a click.Anushka Sunil Dhanwade, StudentNext steps in the collaborationThe collaboration between Microsoft Research and Physics Wallah aims to apply the advancements in solving math problems across additional subjects, ultimately creating a unified education LLM with enhanced reasoning capabilities and improved accuracy to support student learning. Were working on an education-specific LLM that will be fine-tuned using the extensive data weve gathered and enriched by Microsofts expertise in LLM training and algorithms. Our goal is to create a unified model that significantly improves accuracy and raises student satisfaction rates to 95% and beyond, Govil explained. The teams are also integrating a new tool from Microsoft Research called PromptWizard (opens in new tab), an automated framework for optimizing the instructions given to a model, into Physics Wallahs offerings. New prompts can now be generated in minutes, eliminating months of manual work, while providing more accurate and aligned answers for students. For Nambi and the Microsoft Research India team, the collaboration is the latest example of their deep commitment to cultivating the AI ecosystem in India and translating new technology from the lab into useful business applications.By leveraging advanced reasoning techniques and domain expertise, we are transforming how AI addresses challenges across multiple subjects. This represents a key step in building AI systems that act as holistic personal tutors, enhancing student understanding and creating a more engaging learning experience, Nambi said.Explore more VideoShiksha copilot demoOpens in a new tab
