  • US pharma giant Merck backs healthcare marketplace HD in Southeast Asia
    techcrunch.com
Big Tech and pharmaceutical companies are accelerating the implementation of artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry. Just last month, AWS and General Catalyst announced their partnership to speed up the development and deployment of healthcare AI tools. GE Healthcare teamed up with AWS to build generative AI for medical use in 2024. Now, a Thailand-based healthcare startup, HD, has built a marketplace, HDmall, to digitize the fragmented medical industry in Southeast Asia. The startup helps users find healthcare providers like hospitals and clinics. It also assists people in finding specific surgeries and health check-ups, aggregates services to lower costs and provides users with installment payment options. The startup has secured $7.8 million in equity funding to enhance its marketplace and invest further in its AI technology. The recent funding marks the first investment of U.S. pharma giant Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) in a healthtech startup in Asia Pacific. (MSD is the brand that Merck uses to operate outside the U.S. and Canada, and it launched an accelerator called IDEA Studios last June.) Other participants in HDs funding included SBI Ven Capital, M Venture Partners, FEBE Venture, and Partech Partners also participated in the latest financing.MSD, which produces the HPV vaccines, reached out to [us] because we were already selling a lot of HPV vaccines online that were being administered at the hospitals and clinics we work with, co-founder and CEO of HD Sheji Ho said in an exclusive interview with TechCrunch. And if you look at the numbers, we [offer] the largest number for vaccines online in the markets. The five-year-old startups marketplace has over 30,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) from more than 2,500 hospitals and clinics and a handful of pharmaceutical partners and 400,000 paying customers across Thailand and Indonesia, generating $100 million in annual gross transaction volume, Ho noted. It aims to reach 5,000 healthcare providers and 600,000 patients in 2025.The latest financing, which brings HDs total funding to $18 million, comes less than a year after it raised a $5.6 million round. In early 2024, HD started building an AI chatbot, Jib AI, which has been trained on anonymized healthcare product data, transaction data, and chat commerce data sets using advanced large language models. After implementing generative AI technology in its marketplace, almost 60% of customer interactions are managed by AI agents, which deliver high-quality, instant 24/7 response to customers, Ho said.image credits: HD Jib AI helps healthcare professionals like nurses, doctors, and surgeons focus on providing quality patient care by handling most initial triaging and care navigation tasks.Over the next 12 months, the company aims to improve its AI agent capabilities by adding order and refund processing, assisted checkouts, scheduling, electronic health record checking, and medical information retrieval with the Jib AI Health Assistant and via AI-powered asynchronous virtual care with expert physicians. The startup also says it plans to expand its network of external partners over the next two years, focusing on insurance and pharmaceutical companies, as well as employers and educational institutions. While US healthcare companies such as Transcarent and Accolade started directly with B2B care navigation, we see a unique opportunity in Southeast Asia to adopt a B2C2B strategy as defined by Andreessen Horowitz, Ho told TechCrunch. This approach leverages our existing B2C success to transition into B2B, effectively pursuing enterprise monetization from the outset.Healthcare in Southeast AsiaMost venture-backed healthcare startups in Southeast Asia, including Singapores Doctor Anywhere, Halodoc and Alodokter in Indonesia, primarily focus on telehealth and virtual health services. But Ho says the approach is not sustainable in Southeast Asia. Post-pandemic, telehealth as a business model in SEA has encountered significant challenges and is rapidly losing favor among both consumers and investors. The company now positions itself as a mix of Amazon One Medical in the U.S., Chinese outpatient healthcare platforms like JD Health and Alibaba Health, and the Indian inpatient healthcare platform Pristyn Care. The healthcare industry is quite different in emerging Southeast Asian markets such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Without a family doctor system like in Western countries, patients often go straight to hospitals or clinics. This makes it difficult for patients to find the right healthcare services, know where to go, and understand how to handle the costs, Ho told TechCrunch.Due to 40% of healthcare costs being paid by individuals and low levels of private health insurance coverage, people are more sensitive to prices and feel more pressure when making decisions. This leads to a growing demand for platforms that offer clarity, transparency, and ease of comparison among various providers, Ho continued.HDs platform operates more like the Amazon of healthcare. Instead of listing individual GPs or offering physician appointment scheduling, it enables healthcare providers to sell productized services. Our offerings range from health check-ups, cancer screenings, and IVF procedures to root canal treatments, HPV vaccinations, and surgeries like thyroid and hemorrhoid surgeries. This approach aligns with how most people in the region begin their healthcare journeysby searching for specific services rather than individual doctors, Ho said.HD provides its services in Thailand and Indonesia, and it plans to enter Vietnam and eye Myanmar because of their similar healthcare systems.Their healthcare model is quite similar in some ways to Mainland China. So its a high cash payment, around 40%. There is no family doctor system, so people go straight to hospitals or clinics; thereafter, government social security coverage comes into play, Ho told TechCrunch. But those budgets are getting smaller and smaller. This means that more of the pressure to cover healthcare is shifting towards the private sector, whether its through cash or private insurance. This is why insurance going forward presents a big opportunity for us.Moreover, there is a rising trend towards self-empowerment in terms of user behavior in these markets. They are getting more accustomed to using tools such as Google Search or ChatGPT to search for healthcare-related subjects. This aligns well with what HD provides, as it empowers individuals to make their own healthcare choices, according to Ho. Topics

  • Ulu Ventures sticks to its diversity strategy, raises $208M
    techcrunch.com
In BriefPosted:4:54 PM PST February 12, 2025Image Credits:Intpro / Getty ImagesUlu Ventures sticks to its diversity strategy, raises $208MWhile large corporations like Google and Meta are curbing their DEI programs, Ulu Ventures, which just raised a fourth fund at $208 million, doesnt plan to change its strategy of investing in diverse founders, the firm told The Wall Street Journal.Co-founded by Miriam Rivera, a Latina and former vice president and deputy general counsel at Google, Ulu uses a data-driven investment approach to filter out biases. The 17-year-old firm, which invests in seed startups, is mindful that continuing diversity efforts may raise risks under the new administration. If you are going to be standing strong on DEI today, you have to be incredibly buttoned-up, one of the firms partners told WSJ, implying that investing based on data doesnt mean the firm favors specific founder demographics.Ulus limited partners seem to be onboard with its approach to diversity. The firms fourth fund is 50% larger than its $138 million third fund raised in 2021.Topics

  • Power Play: The Economics Of Nuclear Vs. Renewables
    www.forbes.com
SELBY, ENGLAND - JUNE 29: Wind turbines generate electricity as the Drax Power Station in the ... [+] background also generates electricity on June 29, 2023 in Selby, England. The Drax Power Station uses biomass pellets, reducing carbon emissions in comparison to coal. (Photo by Christopher Furlong/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe global energy landscape is shifting as countries weigh the costs and benefits of nuclear power versus renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro. With economic feasibility being a major driver of energy policy, a thorough cost-benefit analysis of these technologies is essential. This article examines the Levelized Cost of Electricity, the role of government subsidies, and investment trends across key markets, including the U.S., Canada, the EU, the UK, the Caribbean and China.Cost Comparisons: Nuclear vs. RenewablesOne of the most critical metrics for evaluating energy sources is the Levelized Cost of Electricity which is a measure of the total cost of building and operating a power plant over its lifetime and expressed in dollars per megawatt-hour. Additionally, the 2024 World Energy Outlook report further states that LCOE serves as a comprehensive metric that consolidates all direct cost components of a specific power generation technology. This includes capital expenditures, financing, fuel costs, operations and maintenance, and any expenses related to carbon pricing. However, LCOE does not account for network integration or other indirect costsAccording to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the LCOE for advanced nuclear power was estimated at $110/MWh in 2023 and forecasted to remain the same up to 2050, while solar PV estimated to be $55/MWh in 2023 and expected to decline to $25/MWh in 2050. Onshore wind was $40/MWh in 2023 and expected to decline to $35/MWh in 2050 making renewables significantly cheaper in many cases. Similar trends were observed in the report for EU, China and India.Similarly, the 2023 Renewable Power Generation Costs indicated that the global weighted average levelized cost of electricity for newly commissioned utility-scale solar photovoltaic, onshore wind, offshore wind, and hydropower projects experienced a downward trend. The most notable drop occurred in utility-scale solar PV, which saw a 12% decrease from 2022. Onshore wind projects also saw a reduction in LCOE, dropping by 3% year-on-year, while the LCOE for offshore wind projects decreased by 7% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the cost of battery storage projects experienced a significant decline, falling by 89% from 2010 to 2023.In contrast, nuclear power continues to face cost overruns and long construction timelines. According to the 2023 World Nuclear Industry Status Report As of 2023, 58 nuclear reactors are under construction globally, with an average of 6 years having passed since construction beganslightly lower than the mid-2022 average of 6.8 years. Despite this, many reactors remain far from completion. In fact, all reactors being built in at least 10 of the 16 countries involved have faced significant delays, often lasting a year or more. Of the 24 reactors clearly documented as behind schedule, at least nine have seen additional delays, and one has reported delays for the first time in the past year. According to WNISR2021, 12 reactors were initially scheduled to start up in 2022, but by the beginning of that year, 16 reactors were planned to be connected to the grid, including four that had been delayed from 2021. However, only seven of these reactors generated first power, while the remaining nine were delayed into at least 2023.MORE FOR YOUNotable examples of delayed projects include the Mochovce-4 reactor in Slovakia, which began construction 38 years ago and now faces further delays, with grid connection now scheduled for 2024. Additionally, seven other reactors have been under construction for a decade or more, including Brazil's Angra-3, India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), Kakrapar-4, and Rajasthan-7 & -8, Japan's Shimane-3, and France's Flamanville-3 (FL3). Projects in France and India have faced further delays , while the Japanese reactor still lacks a provisional startup date. The Hinkley Point C Nuclear plantinitially expected to cost 16 billionhas ballooned to 34 billion due to delays and regulatory challenges and is now unlikely to be operational before 2030 with the previous date of 2027 according to World Nuclear News.Government Subsidies and Investment Trends: Nuclear Vs. RenewablesDespite the declining costs of renewables, government subsidies still play a crucial role in energy economics. Nuclear research and development has significantly decreased in relative terms since the 1970s as investments have become more diversified. In 2015, the International Energy Agency reported that nuclear technologies received just 20% of the public R&D energy budget, a steep decline from nearly 73% in 1975. In contrast, funding for energy efficiency and renewable technologies has grown substantially, with both receiving shares of energy R&D comparable to nuclear in 2015. According to the "Energy Subsidies: Evolution in the Global Energy Transformation to 2050" report, global direct energy sector subsidiesspanning fossil fuels, renewables, and nucleartotaled approximately USD 634 billion in 2017. Fossil fuel subsidies dominated, accounting for about 70% of the total (USD 447 billion), while renewable energy subsidies accounted for 20% (USD 128 billion), biofuels 6% (USD 38 billion), and nuclear received at least 3% (USD 21 billion). However, the actual total could be higher due to data gaps, particularly in sub-national subsidies. Their analysis of nuclear subsidies reflects a minimum estimate for existing nuclear power generation.According to the report, total annual energy sector subsidies are expected to decline, with projections estimating a reduction to USD 466 billion per year by 2030, with a slight increase to USD 475 billion in 2050. This would represent a 25% decrease from 2017 levels and a 45% reduction (USD 390 billion) from the projected subsidy levels without the realistic acceleration of renewable energy deployment. In the U.S., the Inflation Reduction Act (2022) provides tax credits for wind and solar projects, contributing to a surge in renewable investments.China leads the world in renewable energy investments, allocating $546 billion in 2022, according to Scientific American. The Caribbean Context Renewables Vs. NuclearCaribbean governments have historically taken a project-by-project approach to renewable energy development. However, the regions small and isolated islands, combined with limited space for large-scale solar or onshore wind farms, have posed challenges to achieving economies of scale. Additionally, the lack of a local supply chain and the inability to procure at scale make renewable energy projects more expensive in the Caribbean. According to IRENA, Caribbean Community Member States have set a regional goal of generating 47% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2027. To meet this target, Caribbean islands need to add 4 GW of renewable energy capacity, requiring an estimated USD 9 billion in additional investments to fulfill their Nationally Determined Contributions. Through the Small Island Developing States Lighthouses Initiative, IRENA offers support to SIDS in their energy transition by providing policy, regulatory, and technical advisory services, as well as facilitating knowledge sharing, capacity building, and funding for early-stage projects. The 15 Caribbean islands participating in the LHI have a combined installed power capacity of approximately 1,936 MW, consisting of 743 MW of hydropower, 640 MW of bioenergy, 327 MW of solar photovoltaic, and 225 MW of wind energy. Additionally, SIDS are the countries that will feel the effect of climate change with the decimation of their coastlines. On the other hand, nuclear energy remains absent from the region due to high capital costs, safety concerns, and lack of expertise. Jamaica is working to integrate nuclear power into its energy mix, having signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. According to the Prime Minister, this initiative aims to leverage nuclear technology to produce clean electricity, while also promoting economic growth and enhancing energy security for the country. However, introducing nuclear power in Jamaicas energy mix is unlikely to significantly improve energy security due to the high costs, long lead times, and reliance on foreign expertise and resources for nuclear technology. Additionally, the raw materials required for nuclear power plants, such as uranium, would still need to be imported, further limiting the potential for true energy independence.Nuclear and Renewables: Weighing the Future of EnergyAs the global energy transition accelerates, the debate between nuclear power and renewables remains complex. While nuclear energy offers high-capacity, low-carbon baseload power, it is often hindered by long construction timelines, cost overruns, waste issues and decommissioning challenges. Conversely, renewables such as solar and wind continue to experience declining costs and rapid deployment, supported by government subsidies and technological advancements. However, integrating intermittent renewables into the grid requires significant investment in storage and infrastructure. In regions like the Caribbean, renewables face unique geographical and economic challenges, while nuclear remains largely absent due to financial, lack of expertise and logistical barriers. Although some nations, including Jamaica, explore nuclear options, the high costs and foreign dependency may limit its viability and will still leave them desiring energy security. Ultimately, the choice between nuclear and renewables hinges on economic feasibility, policy support, and technological advancements, and requires a balanced approach to ensure a sustainable and resilient energy future.

  • Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw are getting two new AI editing features
    www.digitaltrends.com
AdobeAdobe announced at its Max Japan 2025 design conference a pair of new AI editing tools for its Lightroom and Camera Raw applications designed to reduce the tedious repetition of many common tasks.First off, Adaptive Profiles, which technically debuted last fall, is now generally available in both Lightroom and Camera Raw for color and monochrome HDR images. Per Adobe, Adaptive Profiles, dynamically adjust the tones and colors of your photos, creating an enhanced, yet realistic, starting point for further editing. But rather than apply the same pre-set enhancements to every image it is applied to, Adaptive Profiles uses AI to analyze each image and optimize its adjustments including Exposure, Shadows, Highlights, Color Mixer, and Curves.Recommended VideosDistraction Removal, on the other hand, is currently available in Early Access for Camera Raw users but is coming soon to Lightroom. It detects and removes distracting elements within an image photo, such as reflections in windows, crowds, or people photobombing in the background. Adobe is also rolling out a new feature that is sure to save photographers time, effort, and potentially their sanity. The new Find Duplicates feature has arrived in Early Access for Lightroom on the web users that tracks down and removes duplicate images within its library so that users dont inadvertently start editing the wrong shot. Find Duplicates is being bundled under the Clean Up tool, which can also find and remove blurred images and screenshots.Youll soon find it easier to share the photos you take through Lightroom mobile for iOS, thanks to a few new updates that are being released. The app, for example, will now auto-generate shareable links that you can be viewed by anyone you send them to, regardless of if they have Lightroom themselves. That link generation process will also be 75% faster than before. Youll be able to quickly designate how and where your images will be shared whether thats copying the link, sharing over social media, or sending them directlyto your contacts. Theres no word yet on when these sharing features will arrive on the Google and Samsung Lightroom apps.Editors Recommendations
