Franco Arland/Getty ImagesHow to watch Toulouse vs. PSG in the US without cableSaturday's game is live on BeIN Sports, which holds broadcast rights for Ligue 1 matches in the US.There are several options for watching BeIN. Several cable and satellite TV providers in the US offer the network as part of their channel lineups, including Dish Network, Optimum and Spectrum (the latter requiring a $7-a-month premium for the Sports View add-on).If you're a cord-cutter, there's a whole host of streaming platforms that carry BeIN Sports. Sarah Tew/CNET With an excellent channel selection, easy-to-use interface and best-in-class cloud DVR, the $73 per month YouTube TV is one of the best cable TV replacements. In order to watch BeIN Sports on the platform you'll need its Sports Plus add-on, which costs an additional $11 per month.Read our YouTube TV review. See at YouTube TV Sarah Tew/CNET BeIN is available on Sling TVas part of its Sports Extra add-on for either Sling Orange or Sling Blue. Its Orange and Blue packages start at $40 per month, and you can combine them for a monthly rate of $55 ($60 in some regions), with Sports Extra costing an extra $11 a month. The Orange option nets you one stream, while Blue gives you three. It's not as comprehensive or as easy to navigate as YouTube, but with a bit of work, including adding an antenna or an AirTV 2 DVR, it's unbeatable value. We'll also add that the service offers local channels such as ABC and CBS in some regions where the monthly rate is $45.Read our Sling TV review. See at Sling TV Ty Pendlebury/CNET Fubo There's a lot to like about Fubo. In addition to BeIN Sports, it offers a wide selection of channels, plus its sports focus makes it especially attractive to soccer fans, as well as NBA, NHL and MLB fans who live in an area served by one of Fubo's RSNs. It's also a great choice for NFL fans, since it's one of three services, alongside YouTube TV andHulu, that offer NFL Network and optional RedZone. The biggest hole in Fubo's lineup is the lack of Warner Bros. Discovery networks, including HGTV, Food Network, Cartoon Network, CNN, TNT and TBS -- especially since the latter two carry a lot of sports content, in particular NBA, NHL and MLB. Those missing channels, and the $80 price tag, make it less attractive than YouTube TV for most viewers.Read our Fubo review. See at Fubo On top of this, BeIN Sports Connect is the network's standalone streaming platform. You can log in with your cable or streaming service credentials if your provider has BeIN in the package. This allows you to stream live matches and other programming on various devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops and so on).Make sure to check if BeIN Sports is included in the specific package or plan you are considering, as it might be part of a sports bundle or require an additional subscription. How to watch Ligue 1 from anywhere with a VPNIf you find yourself unable to view Ligue 1 matches locally, you may need a different way to watch the games -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins. With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location. All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommendBrave.

In BriefPosted:10:53 AM PST February 15, 2025Image Credits:SOPA Images / Getty ImagesxAIs Colossus supercomputer raises health questions in MemphisElon Musks AI startup xAI plans to continue using 15 gas turbines to power its Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, according to an operating permit with the Shelby County Health Department for non-stop turbine use from June 2025 to June 2030.Why does it matter? The Commercial Appeal, a news outlet that obtained the documents, observes that environmental concerns have emerged, as the 20-year-old turbines emit hazardous air pollutants (HAP), including formaldehyde, at levels exceeding the EPAs 10-ton annual cap for a single source. (Per the story, the facilitys operating permit self-reports that the turbines each emit 11.51 tons of HAP per year.)The turbines have already been running since summer 2024 without public notice or oversight, says Eric Hilt, a spokesperson with Southern Environmental Law Center, the large environmental nonprofit organization, and the permits dont account for those emissions. Its another example of the company not being transparent with the community or with local leaders, Hilt tells The Commercial Appeal. The health department tells the outlet the permits have not yet been approved, and there is no set timeline for approval.Topics

  • Perplexity launches its own freemium deep research product
    techcrunch.com
Perplexity has become the latest AI company to release an in-depth research tool, with a new feature announced Friday.Google unveiled a similar feature for its Gemini AI platform in December. Then OpenAI launched its own research agent earlier this month. All three companies even have given the feature the same name: Deep Research. The goal is to provide more in-depth answers with real citations for more professional use cases, compared to what youd get from a consumer chatbot. In a blog post announcing Deep Research, Perplexity wrote that the feature excels at a range of expert-level tasksfrom finance and marketing to product research.Perplexity Deep Research is currently available on the web, and the company said it will soon be added to its Mac, iOS, and Android apps. To use it, you just select Deep Research from a drop-down menu when you submit your query in Perplexity, which will then create a detailed report that can be exported as a PDF or shared as a Perplexity Page.To create this report, Perplexity said Deep Research iteratively searches, reads documents, and reasons about what to do next, refining its research plan as it learns more about the subject areas, supposedly similar to how a human might research a new topic.Image: PerplexityImage Credits:Perplexity /The company also highlighted its performance on Humanitys Last Exam, an AI benchmarking test with expert-level questions in a variety of academic fields. Perplexity said its Deep Research tool scored 21.1% on the test, easily beating most other models, such as Gemini Thinking (6.2%), Grok-2 (3.8%), and OpenAIs GPT-4o (3.3%) but not quite matching OpenAIs Deep Research (26.6%).But while you currently need a $200-per-month Pro subscription to use OpenAIs Deep Research (the company plans to expand to other subscription tiers), Perplexitys Deep Research is available for free non-subscribers get an unspecified-but-limited number of queries per day, while paying subscribers get unlimited queries.Perplexitys Deep Research also seems to perform more quickly, completing most tasks in under three minutes compared to 5 to 30 minutes for OpenAI Deep Research.Asked to compare the various deep research products, Perplexity offered an overview of the different technologies, pricing models, and performance in different use cases and subject matters, with links to articles about each feature). It summarized the differences as follows:Perplexity AI excels in speed and accessibility for casual researchersOpenAI dominates in analytical depth for enterprise applicationsGoogle integrates most seamlessly with existing productivity ecosystemsWhile its too early to know how these tools will affect everyday and professional research as they become more popular, The Economist recently highlighted shortcomings to OpenAIs Deep Research that likely apply here too: not just limitations to its creativity in interpreting data and a tendency to rely on sources that are easily available, but a larger risk that outsourcing all your research to a supergenius assistant could reduce the number of opportunities to have your best ideas.

  • Too Much Focus On AI Has Taken The Social Out Of Social Media
    www.forbes.com
Social media may be less social because of an increased focus on AIgettyLast week, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti called out social media platforms TikTok and Facebook parent Meta in an open letter to their respective CEOs, Zhang Yiming and Mark Zuckerberg, writing that they no longer "care very much about content" and instead have become "much more interested in technology and AI."Peretti further suggested that the social networks prioritized content that could create anger and result in more negative emotions to increase user engagement. While Peretti's comments were also used to announce that BuzzFeed would be entering the social media space with a platform designed to "spread joy" and return to "playful creative expression," the BuzzFeed chief did put the spotlight on how artificial intelligence and other technology has changed social media. And possibly for the worse."Social media platforms increasingly leverage advanced machine learning techniques e.g., deep neural networks and reinforcement learning to shape feeds, moderate content, and incentivize user engagement," explained Dr. Pablo Rivas, assistant professor of Computer Science at Baylor University.Rivas said those systems excel at predicting individual preferences and surfacing the most clickable material. That can inadvertently reward sensational or polarized content. It doesn't have to be that way, however."If used thoughtfully, AI can serve as a powerful force for positive online interactions by spotlighting fact-based, meaningful contributions," Rivas added. "This requires not just robust algorithmic design but also a commitment to ethical principlestransparency, fairness, and respect for user autonomy."MORE FOR YOUAI is Taking Out the Social ComponentThere has also been no shortage of stories of how AI is enabling the spread of misinformation and disinformation, as the technology can be used to create misleading images and videos. AI is already making social media far less social as a result."AI is playing a major role in how we see the world. For better or worse, machine learning algorithms have enabled a new and incredibly profitable business model surveillance capitalism by which platforms spy on users to pander to their biases, impulses, fears and desires," warned Dr. Arthur O'Connor, academic director of data science at the City University of New York School of Professional Studies. With more and more Americans relying on social media for news and information, the ability of AI to manipulate what the users see and read is a major concern."For all the imagined dystopias of Skynet or the Matrix, perhaps the biggest risk of AI is not how we change and advance AI, but how AI changes us," O'Connor added. "When algorithms can instantly generate content optimized for quick consumption, it creates a feedback loop: shorter attention spans lead to demands for simpler content, which further reduces attention spans. This means that as machines get smarter, most of us may get dumber."O'Connor noted that psychologists call this "cognitive offloading," where the tendency is to rely on external tools rather than developing internal capabilities."Instead of wrestling with a problem, we simply prompt AI for an immediate answer or solution," he continued. "In doing so, we risk atrophying our critical thinking and reasoning doing what the calculator did to our arithmetic skills, smartphones did to our memory of phone numbers, and GPS navigation is doing to our sense of direction."Moreover, chatbots and virtual assistants simulate social interaction without the challenges and growth opportunities of real human dialog, offering a kind of pseudo-sociality that can exacerbate alienation and loneliness."AI use in social media certainly didn't create social fragmentation and isolation of our times, but it's clearly not making it any better," suggested O'Connor. Not The Focus On AI, But How It Is Being UsedThough Peretti may have tried to blame the social media companies' increased focus on AI as being the problem, the real issue may simply be how on how the technology is being used. AI has the potential to improve social media, but that would require some key changes to be made. The social media platforms would have to fundamentally rethink how they're using AI, said Dr. Mel Stanfill, associate professor in the Texts and Technology Program and the Department of English at the University of Central Florida."The recommendation algorithm would have to not just optimize for attention but also things like posts that result in productive, respectful conversation," noted Stanfill."That's a thing that could be figured out and implemented, but it's contrary to the platforms' interests in attention above all else," added Stanfill. "Similarly, for moderation, it's a bit of a game of whack-a-mole whereas the tactics of platforms change to try to decrease harmful use, so do the tactics of people trying to be terrible to each other, but it's totally possible to use human judgment to understand those issues and change how content moderation algorithms respond based upon that understanding."In other words, generative AI isn't inherently a harmful technology, and it can do amazing things. Yet, like a lot of technologies, it can be harmful and needs human oversight to be used properly. AI may also need to be better "trained," and it is already being used to prevent the technology from generating responses to prompts deemed anti-social or dangerous."These techniques basically play the same role as human content moderators at some of the major social media and internet companies at removing hate speech from user-generated content, although many firms have recently abandoned such efforts," said O'Connor. Moreover, some of the training can be time-consuming and would require large teams to work on it."That's expensive compared to just letting machine learning do its thing, but it would go a long way toward more positive uses of these technologies," Stanfill continued. The final question is what role, if any, should social media companies play in regulating content that has AI's digital fingerprints on it."Social media companies favoring any type of point of view positive or negative conflicts with the principle of freedom of speech, although there's plenty of evidence that major news outlets are associated with some degree of political bias," said O'Connor. "At the end of the day, it's really about what end users choose to post, subscribe and read."

  • The iconic Nokia N97 gets resurrected as a retro-inspired gaming handheld
    www.techspot.com
In context: Few phones generated as much buzz as 2009's Nokia N97. After all, it was the company's first true attempt at taking a bite out of the emerging smartphone market. The quirky slider packed a touchscreen, a full QWERTY keyboard, and "cutting-edge" features like 32GB storage and a 5MP camera. While it never quite achieved a smash hit status, it continues to hold a cult following. Fast forward to today, and a gaming company is trying to rekindle that Nokia nostalgia with a new handheld console. Sugar Cubes has just released the N97 Elite, and yeah, it shares plenty of vibes with the original N97 only this time, it's designed for portable gaming. The sliding mechanism is the star of the show here. Just like the original N97, the Elite's 4.7-inch display can slide upwards, tilting the screen for a better viewing angle. But instead of revealing a physical keyboard underneath, you get a controller layout with a D-pad and buttons. No analog sticks though, which is a bit of a bummer. While Sugar Cubes clearly chose the N97 namesake as a nod to the sliding mechanism, we'd argue that the display up top actually resembles the Nokia Lumia 920 more. The specs also have a bit of a retro vibe, thanks to the Snapdragon 855+ chip from 2019 under the hood. Obviously, it's no longer a powerhouse, but considering it was a flagship processor with a highly capable GPU in its heyday, it should still have enough muscle to run classic emulators and even some relatively demanding modern games.Impressively, the chip is paired with a hefty 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. // Related StoriesSugar Cubes has been teasing prototypes of the N97 Elite on Chinese social media for months. And if you're in China, you can actually buy it right now for CNY 1,499 (around $205 USD). It even comes in some slick special edition Gundam and Dragon Ball designs for anime fans. That said, there's a catch early reviews have not been kind. So unless you're absolutely in love with that N97 styling, this might be one to avoid based on the negative feedback so far.In a way, it's almost poetic, considering the N97 Elite is a microcosm of what happened with the original Nokia N97 over a decade ago. That phone generated massive hype as one of Nokia's first serious touchscreen smartphone efforts. But sadly, its resistive touchscreen, sluggish Symbian OS, and overall performance left a lot to be desired. As slicker iPhones and Android devices emerged, the N97's flaws became too glaring to overlook. It marked the beginning of Nokia's downward spiral in mobile, as the company struggled to keep up with the competition.Image credit: NITTRX

  • PlayStation might skip its standard summer showcase this year
    www.digitaltrends.com
Summer has always been the season of announcements for the latest and greatest in gaming, but Sony might skip its normal showcase in favor of a smaller State of Play. This would make it the second year in a row Sony has decided against a major show, as 2024 also saw a smaller conference than normal. The news comes from Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb fame, who says that a decision has not yet been made.Internally it sounds like theyre debating, and flopping between, maybe making this summer a full showcase versus another State of Play. But they are considering a showcase, Grubb said. And if they have a showcase, that means theyll have a lot of stuff to talk about. And at that point, you would definitely expect to see Wolverine and a lot of other games that could come out next year.State of Play | February 12, 2025 [English Subtitles]Considering that Sony just held a State of Play this previous week, it would make more sense for the company to hold a normal direct and give attention to its first-party titles especially since the State of Play focused almost entirely on third-party games. Sony also announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold more than 75 million units in total, illustrating the ever-rising popularity of the console.Recommended VideosA summer showcase would be an ideal time for Sony to give more information on upcoming titles like Ghost of Yoteior maybe even Bloodborne. As it stands, the biggest announcement from the State of Play was Housemarques upcomingSaros, so theres plenty of news waiting in the wings for fans. No decision has been made yet, but well keep you up to date on what to expect going forward.Editors Recommendations
