• How to turn off damage numbers in Avowed
    www.digitaltrends.com
One of the simple tips and tricks RPGs rely on to show how powerful you are is to display your damage in numbers. Avowed does this for every attack and ability you use, meaning you will see a ton of numbers pop up during your adventure. While they can be helpful at times, enemies also have health bars to see how much damage you're doing so having those numbers pop up can be more distracting than anything else, especially in third-person. Thankfully the game lets you turn these off to get a slightly more grounded experience. Here's how to quickly toggle this setting off.Recommended VideosDifficultyEasyDuration5 minutesObsidianDamage numbers are always on by default and will pop up whenever an enemy takes damage. That can be from an attack, skill, or status effect like burning. If you're stick of seeing all these numbers, follow these steps to disable them.Step 1: Pause the game and go into Settings.Step 2: Go into the UI tab.RelatedStep 3: Scroll down to the HUD Setting section and find Damage Numbers.Step 4: Change it from On to Off.You are always free to turn damage numbers back on from this menu, but you won't be missing out on anything if you prefer to have them off.Editors Recommendations

  • How big is a neutrino? We're finally starting to get an answer
    www.newscientist.com
Pinning down the size of the neutrino is a tricky taskagsandrew/ShutterstockThe first direct measurement of the size of the neutrino, a fundamental particle, suggests they are at least larger than an atomic nucleus but they could potentially be trillions of times larger.Part of the problem in answering this question is that, rather than being spherical, quantum mechanics tells us that particles are inherently fuzzy waves, moving and vibrating as they travel through space. Physicists mark the boundaries of a particle, and thus its size, by looking for its wave packet, an area inside which the wave vibrates strongly, and beyond which it sharply trails off. AdvertisementFor neutrinos, measuring the wave packet is particularly challenging because these particles rarely interact with normal matter. Until now, we have only calculated the wave packets size indirectly, with estimates spanning a range of 13 orders of magnitude from smaller than an atomic nucleus to as large as a couple of metres, or 10 trillion times bigger. Now, Joseph Smolsky at the Colorado School of Mines and his colleagues have made the first direct measurement of the wave packet, finding that neutrinos must be at least hundreds of times larger than the previous smallest estimate, making them larger than typical atomic nuclei. To do this, Smolsky and his team measured radioactive beryllium as it decayed into lithium, a process called electron capture. When this happens, an electron in the beryllium atom combines with a proton in its nucleus, producing a neutron. This transforms the beryllium atom into lithium, producing a kick of energy that fires the atom in a certain direction and generating a neutrino that fires in the opposite direction to balance the momentum. By putting the beryllium inside very sensitive superconducting detectors and studying it using a particle accelerator, they could then measure the lithium atoms extremely precisely and infer the neutrinos properties. Untangle the weirdness of reality with our subscriber-only, monthly newsletter.Sign up to newsletterThe researchers found that the neutrinos were at least 6.2 picometres, which is hundreds of times larger than the atomic nucleus. It was a little bit surprising, says Smolsky. When I think of an electron capture process, I imagine it within the nucleus because the electron has to overlap with a nucleus. But the limit we showed says that the size of the neutrino is actually much larger than the nucleus itself when it comes out.Technically, this is a very difficult measurement, says Alfons Weber at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. They used a really very neat method to make a precision measurement, something which I thought you could never do.Measuring the size of the neutrino wave packet is important for building future neutrino detectors capable of precisely measuring how often neutrinos switch, or oscillate, between three different types, says Weber. These neutrino oscillations are key to working out why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe, but they can only be precisely measured if the neutrino is above a certain size. If it is too small, then the three different types of neutrino, each of a different mass, will spill over the edges of the neutrino wave packet, and mess up the measurements.Journal reference:Nature DOI: 10.1038/s41586-024-08479-6Topics:neutrinos

  • A German drone manufacturer backed by Peter Thiel says it will double its production capacity in Ukraine in 2025
    www.businessinsider.com
German drone maker Quantum Systems says it will double its production capacity in Ukraine in 2025.The company has supplied Ukraine with drones since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.Billionaire Peter Thiel is one of the investors backing the startup.German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems has said it will double its production capacity in Ukraine in 2025.In a press release on Friday, the Peter Thiel-backed startup said the planned expansion reflected its "unwavering commitment" to ensure Kyiv gets the technology it needs amid its ongoing war with Russia.Quantum, which has already established two facilities in Ukraine, produces several uncrewed aerial systems used by Kyiv, including the "Vector" reconnaissance drone and the "Trinity" mapping drone. Since the start of the invasion, Ukraine has ordered hundreds of these systems from the company.Quantum's Vector drone is primarily used for target identification and surveillance. It can fly for up to 180 minutes, allows for real-time video streaming over a range of 35 kilometers (almost 22 miles), and has vertical take-off and landing capability, the company says. The "rucksack portable" drone weighs just 18 pounds and is equipped with on-board AI.The Munich-based company also produces the "Trinity Pro" and "Trinity Tactical," which are used for mapping and surveying. These drones can cover an area of 700 hectares in one flight and can fly for 90 minutes, Quantum says. They can use a variety of sensors to gather data, such as multi-spectral cameras and LiDAR scanners. They can be deployed to help with environmental and battle damage assessments, as well as surveying and mapping key infrastructure and terrain, among other things.Founded in 2015, Quantum has raised more than $200 million, per Crunchbase.Billionaire and PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel is one of the investors to have pumped money into the company, taking part in a financing round alongside Project A and Sanno Capital in 2022.Speaking at the time, Thiel said: "The future of UAS is in neither software nor hardware alone, but in the intelligent synthesis of the two.""With that understanding, Quantum-Systems is a leap ahead of its competition," he added.Quantum's CEO Florian Seibel previously told Business Insider that the company planned to gain an edge on competitors by taking what he called a "Tesla approach.""You have to do everything from A to Z," he said. "You are a hardware company, you are a manufacturing company, you are a data service company. That makes it a very complex business case, but that also makes it very defendable."Drones have played a crucial role in shaping the conflict in Ukraine, providing both sides with standoff weapons and improved surveillance abilities.Their prominence on the battlefield has led Kyiv to significantly ramp up domestic production efforts and imports.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced in early 2024 the creation of a separate branch of the country's armed forces dedicated solely to uncrewed systems.Ukraine's defense ministry said in January that its armed forces would also get an additional UAH 2.5 billion (almost $60 million) a month to procure new drones, in a move designed to enable brigades to purchase the equipment they need directly.

  • I worked in a children's secondhand store. Here's what you should know before donating.
    www.businessinsider.com
I worked for a year at a secondhand store selling used clothing and toys.We had to reject many donated items based on their condition.I want people to be more mindful of what they donate instead. I worked at a consignment store in my final year of high school. Each shift, customers would bring bags of old clothing for us to sort through to determine if it was acceptable to sell. Being a consignment store, customers would get a percentage of the profits if their items were sold. If the items were unacceptable, we would put them aside in a bag to donate to local charities. While working there, I must've sorted through hundreds of pieces of clothing, many of which we couldn't sell. This should not be surprising, given that only about 15% of clothes donated to secondhand stores are resold or reused. Most items I rejected had obvious imperfections: visible stains, holes, or tears, making it extremely unlikely anyone else would want to wear them. We would even receive items our store didn't sell, such as used underwear. It was frustrating to constantly receive donations so evidently unfit to sell, making me feel as if people were just using our store to get rid of clothing they no longer wanted without thinking about where it would end up.We had to ship rejected clothes to charitiesThe clothing we rejected was donated to local charities, but we didn't track what happened to it after it left the store. It's likely that the clothing will get thrown out somewhere down the line, becoming part of the EPA estimate in 2018 that 11.3 million tons of textiles were sent to landfills, comprising 7.7% of all landfilled waste. In the past decade, there's been increasing awareness of the harms of the fast-fashion industry and the mass production of cheap, low-quality clothing, leading people to look to secondhand clothing stores as a more sustainable alternative. It can be especially appealing to parents of young children who are constantly outgrowing their clothes. All this to say, I want people to be more mindful of what they do with their old clothing and take a good look at the items they're giving away to ask themselves, honestly, if anyone else would want to use it.There are other alternatives for kids' stuffIt's also important to consider other alternatives before donating clothing to secondhand stores. Do you have friends with younger children? Maybe they would appreciate your child's old clothes (if it's not in good enough condition for your friends, secondhand stores probably don't want it either). I personally try to mend or upcycle my clothes to extend their life as much as possible. If clothing is in really bad shape, you can look into textile recycling programs in your area or repurpose them as household items such as cleaning rags.Addressing this as individuals starts with being intentional about what we buy. Before buying clothes, reflect on whether you or your child really needs them and where they might end up once you finish them. Talk to family and friends about appropriate gifts for your child sometimes, non-material gifts, such as experiences, can be more meaningful. These changes may seem small, but they could make a difference in how we treat our old clothes in the long term.

  • Mickey 17 Is a Solid Sci-Fi Delight, Until Things Get a Little Too Real
    gizmodo.com
When Mickey 17 is the movie you expect it to be, its great. Multiple Robert Pattinsons chewing super cool sci-fi scenery, often opposite a dynamite supporting cast. That makes up a significant portion of the movie, which is also heavy on interesting world-building and character-driven humor. Crazy stuff happens, then more crazy stuff happens, and its all pretty entertaining. But, over the course of the film, a story that starts as a subplot becomes increasingly important, and it creates a narrative and tonal imbalance that holds the film back from its full potential. Written and directed by the Oscar-winning Bong Joon-ho, and based on a novel by Edward Ashton, Mickey 17 is set in a near future where a unique spin on cloning technology has been created. The tech perfectly prints out a new version of a person, down to their most recent memories, and its invention sets off all manner of ethical and religious controversies. Its so controversial, in fact, that its outlawed on Earth. But, its the future, so its allowed in space, and through a seriously silly set of events, a nobody named Mickey (Pattinson) signs up for the job of an expendable. A person whose job it is to die. Bolstering that setup is a truly incredible job of world-building. Seemingly every question you could haveHow exactly would this work? What would the world think about it? How could it be exploited?is dealt with in a fun, detailed way that could only come from the mind of a true sci-fi fan. All of this is then slowly dispersed as we watch Mickey after Mickey live and die, through all manner of dangerous work including human testing for medicines, diseases, and more. Naomi Ackie and Robert Pattinson in Mickey 17. Warner Bros. Why would someone need to do human medical trials? Thats because, as we soon learn, Mickeys job is to be expendable on an expedition of people fed up with Earth who hope to repopulate an alien planet in deep space. The voyage is led by the charismatic but slightly stupid Senator Marshall (Mark Ruffalo), who lost two presidential elections, and now takes hundreds of sycophant passengers to another galaxy hoping to create a world all for themselves. Hes obsessed with wealth, power, has golden orange skin, huge teeth, fake hair, and you see where were going with this. Hes supposed to remind us of THAT guy. Bongs movies are always socially conscious and interesting, even if they can be a little on the nose. From Parasite to Snowpiercer, to Okja and The Host, you can usually read Bongs thematic intent like a big, blinking light. What sets Mickey 17 apart is that on paper the films political parallels are much better hidden. Marshall and his in-your-face wife Gwen (Toni Collette) play merely a tangential role at the start, as the story is more focused on Mickeys friendship with the selfish Berto (Steven Yeun) and his burgeoning romance with the soldier Nasha (Naomi Ackie). Those relationships have a relatable, human feel and, when interwoven with the cloning stuff, really work. Mickey 17 is at its very best when it explores how the existence of clones would impact the lives of all these characters. But as the space mission goes on, the Marshalls plan to repopulate a new planet with a superior human race becomes increasingly prevalent. Slowly but surely it overtakes the film. What was at first a little silly and unpredictable becomes much more serious and much more predictable, because we are, frankly, living in it right now. Mark Ruffalo is a moronic evil leader with a loyal following in Mickey 17. Yes. Warner Bros. The intentions are clear: to show how a person who is so anonymous no one cares if he dies can stand up against a tyrant. And, along the way, there are a few fun twists that keep things fresh. However, you can almost feel the enjoyment you were getting from the film slowly drain away because of how recognizable everything becomes. Its almost as if, if things had gone differently this past November, the entire movie would play differently. (The film did famously shift release dates several times and now were wondering if distance from the election was part of the reasoning.) November did happen, though, and we now live in a world where a Marshall-like leader and his loonies are actually running things, not running away into space.Eventually, Mickeys cloning and Marshalls plan come together and everything shifts again. What started as a sci-fi exploration before becoming a political lightning rod ends as something else entirely. A good something else. It even involves a super cool species of creatures nicknamed Creepers that play a huge role. But the films disjointed tones, themes, and exterior forces continue to work against a film which, at its heart, has such exciting potential and intention. As Mickey, Pattinson has the role of a lifetime, portraying multiple versions of himself, often in the same scene. His ability to make us feel sympathy for Mickey despite his regeneration is something to behold. Ruffalo and Collette are also having an incredible time (one word: Sauce), though Ruffalos performance does occasionally touch dangerously upon imitation. Yeun is perfect as the slimy friend you love to hate, while Ackie finds a perfect balance of strength and playfulness. Everyone in the film is excellent. Pattinsons character goes off on his own. Warner Bros. You just wish it was all in service of a story that was scary for reasons intended on screen instead of off. Mickey 17 is an uneven, enjoyable film that will almost certainly get better with age, distance, and perspective. As it stands, no matter what your political views are, watching it now feels way too soon to distinguish our reality from its sci-fi future. But its certainly unique and weird enough to warrant a watch.Mickey 17 just had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. It opens in the U.S. March 7. Want more io9 news? • Sonics Cinematic Success Has Come Through Fan Focus
    gizmodo.com
Weve been getting a lot of video game adaptations in the last eight years across TV and film. While the genre has thrived on TV thanks to multiple shows, your Castlevanias and Arcane, things are different in theaters. Illuminations Mario is just coming into its own, Mortal Kombat is taking its time, and other game movies are some time away. One game character has consistently delivered, though: you know him, you played him, itsssssss Sonic the Hedgehog! The firstSonic movie released on Valentines Day 2020, and in another world, it wouldve come out in November 2019. But thenits first trailer hit that April and folks were not pleased, lets say, about that initial version. Weird body proportions, too many teeth, and it was an overall offputting design so dislikeddespite being committed to enough that Halloween costumes and packaging art featured the first iterationParamount pushed the movie back and brought on recurring Sonic artist Tyson Hesse to give the title character a redesign that made him look more similar to how he does in the games. This was the most major change between shooting and the films release, and it came to be a major part of the narrative surrounding the movie: Paramount listened to the fans, which meant they were in control of the movie going forward. Flash forward five years, and that firstSonichas been a game changer. For Sega, this was the shot in the arm it apparently needed for the often inconsistent games; 2022s Sonic Frontiershas combat inspired by the Blue Blurs fighting style in the movie, and 2024s Shadow Generations (bundled with a remaster of 2011s Sonic Generations) gives players the option to be the latter hedgehog as he looks in the third film and voiced by his movie actor, Keanu Reeves. As for Paramount, this is basically its big, recurring kids franchise sinceTransformersis TBD, and the Ninja Turtles need more time to cook. Thus far, theres been two (soon to be three) sequel films that keep making money, plus a spinoff show starring longtime series co-lead Knuckles the Echidna. Its also gone and revived the career of top-billed human lead Jim Carrey, who plays series baddie Dr. Eggman, a role which appears to be the only acting hes interested in or wants to do these days. Paramount Pictures As a 90s-born child who had minimal interaction with the franchise2006s Sonic Rush is the only game Ive played, and I have a memory of seeing some of Sonic Underground as a childwatching them in the theater is an interesting experience. Theres moments where I can feel the films charms completely winning me over; Carreys Eggman is generally funny and the other actors like James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Lee Majdoub do their best with the material given, and the various CG animals look consistently good when put on screen. (A rain-drenched Shadow sullenly walking through the streets of Tokyo?Mwah, beautiful, chefs kiss.) And when its time for those animals to engage in speedy action against each other or Eggmans army of robots, director Jeff Fowlers previous experience with the games come through in how impressive and well-choreographed the fights look. The talent and affection for the games sure comes through, and even simple things like using Sumpters Maddie to tease the next character joining the movies underline how much of an earnest effort this whole, ongoing endeavor is. Less endearing is how the movies come off like theyre not reaching their full potential in sometimes disappointing ways. Their episodic structure means much of the human cast comes off static, since theyre not given much to do but hit a particular comedy beat, and thats basically it. (See: three movies in, Maddie not having anything to her butbeing a walking tease for the next franchise character.) By that same token, it increasingly feels like the filmmakers end these while hedging their bets that Carrey may not want to return as Eggman; the actor indicated he was eyeing retirement from acting after Sonic 2, then came back for the third, later saying he did so because he likes getting paid. All well and good, but itll be nice if later movies get to end without frequently glancing over their shoulder wondering if theyre about to lose their most bankable, non-animal draw. Its the devotion to being kids movies that may be the problem. When Sonic 3brings Robotniks grandfather Gerald into the picture, its revealed the older, madder scientist freed Shadow and teamed with his grandson so they could use a spacecraft to destroy Earth (and by extension, the three of them) to avenge his dead granddaughter, Maria. Its a dark swing that feels like it needs more connective tissue, or at the very least, some insight into Gerald that the movie doesnt really grant otherwise. Conversely, Shadow is given much more focus, and is treated with proper seriousness that informs the films emotional core, but Gerald feels like he was conceived as a vessel for well-done comedic gags first more than being a threat. Any kids movie can have an uneven tone between serious and slapstick, but Sonic 3s imbalance feels more notable as Paramounts determined to keep these going every two or three years. Paramount When I saw Sonic 3 in theatres, I was seats away from someone who was clearly a franchise fan and had the time of their lives when Sonic and Shadow used their Super forms, beat upp Eggmans robots, and did The Pose from Sonic Adventure 2. He and someone else in the theater marked out like mad when Amy and Metal Sonic showed up in the mid-credits, then again when Shadow was revealed to be alive in the post-credits. If nothing else, Im happy for those two and others in that same camp: could these movies be better? Yes, and several waysbut theyre hitting for the kids and older fans theyre targeted at, and have kept that focus half a decade later. Sometimes, thats all you need. Want more io9 news? • Do face rollers work? We asked a dermatologist.
    www.popsci.com
Face rolling does have some benefits, according to experts. Image: Jonathan Knowles/Getty ImagesShareScan your social media feed, and youll probably run across an influencer incorporating a face roller into their daily skincare routine. Touted for their supposed ability to reduce puffiness, improve circulation, and even provide anti-aging benefits, face rollers have become a popular beauty item that you can pick up from the neighborhood drug store for $20.Its a skincare tool thats heavily popularized by social media, said Dr. Megha Trivedi, a dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. But theyre also nothing new. The concept of the facial roller is commonly associated with traditional Chinese medicine, she said. Get the Popular Science newsletter By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. What is a face roller, and how should they be used?A face roller features a handle attached to smooth, rolling stones designed to glide across the skin. Thanks to their roots in Chinese medicine, rollers made with jade are especially popular, Trivedi said. The material has long been used to promote healing in China. But rose quartz or stainless steel are also popular.Using a face roller involves rolling the stones across your face. Light pressure and a gentle, outward rolling motion are best, Trivedi said. Avoid aggressive back-and-forth movements, which can irritate the skin. A five or 10-minute session is sufficient, and you can even use it once or twice a day, she said. Some face roller aficionados stick the rollers in the refrigerator to cool the stones. Cooling can naturally help inflammation, Trivedi said. Some also use rollers to apply skincare products, believing the roller presses lotions or serums into the skin for better absorption. Thats not a well-supported claim with the rollers in particular, she cautioned.Do face rollers actually work? But do they work? Bottom line: Its a superficial treatment, Trivedi said. There are really no permanent anti-aging effects that have been supported by the literature with face rollers. However, the rolling motion may at least briefly improve blood flow to the skin and drain excess lymphatic fluid, which circulates through our body as part of our immune system. Face rollers can temporarily de-puff the skin and improve circulation and blood flow, like any massage. But there are no long-term benefits for anti-aging, she said. Its not going to give you that face lift or collagen building to the significant degree where you start to see improvement of fine lines or wrinkles.Should you use a face roller? Some people shouldnt use a face roller, including those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema, rosacea or acne. You want to avoid creating micro tears in the skin, Trivedi said. If you have rosacea or eczema, you want to be careful not to create sort of a rug burn [on the skin].Similarly, be careful when using face rollers in conjunction with an exfoliating chemical like tretinoin, a retinoid medicine used for acne or wrinkles, or Vitamin C. You want to be careful because your skins already more sensitive, and that can definitely make it more susceptible to tearing, she said. And dont use a face roller if it isnt clean. Before and after each use, Trivedi recommends cleaning the roller thoroughly with an alcohol-based cleanser. But that might damage some stones, so you also can use soap and water. One of the things it can potentially do is roll around bacteria and things that you dont want to be rolling around your skin, which can worsen acne and spread bacteria into open wounds if you have them, she said.Ultimately, Trivedi said face rollers can be a useful tool, but only if you have realistic expectations. Theyre not going to give you a dramatic, permanent transformation, but if you enjoy the ritual of it, theres no harm in incorporating it into your routine, she said. And she notes that the act of facial massage, whether with a roller or by hand, can help with stress reduction and promote a sense of wellbeing. So, while face rollers may not be the answer to more youthful skin, they can still have a place in a balanced skincare routine, Trivedi said. Massage can help with soothing and relaxation. Its really kind of a nice way to unwind from your day.
