• Government Fires Specialists Without Realizing They Were in Charge of Nuclear Bombs, Then Panics and Tries to Rehire Them
    futurism.com
Paging Dr. StrangeloveWe've all made mistakes before. Maybe we did something in the heat of the moment, or said something we couldn't take back.Point is, it happens, and that's okay because however bad our mistakes were, at least they didn't risk spelling doom for the entire human race.Elon Musk, the richest man in the history of currency, is in the news yet again is he ever not now? for spearheading a massive round of government layoffs. This wave, carried out over Thursday and Friday, targeted recent hires across the CDC,Small Business Administration,Homeland Security, Veteran's Affairs, Department of Education, and crucially, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).The NNSA is a little-known group charged with building, designing, and organizing the US Nuclear arsenal at one time the largest in the world, now said to be a close second to Russia. It's the kind of agency you hopenotto read about in the news. The whole "nuclear" part evidently wasn't enough to deter Musk and his DOGE boys from sending between 300 and 400 nuclear arms personnel to the bread line in a confusing flurry of termination emails on Wednesday. As reported by multiple outlets in the wake of the firings, it turned out that the officials overseeing the dismissals didn't understand that the sacked workers were responsible for overseeing nuclear weapons leadingthem to turn around and beg some of the now-fired workers to come back. But that's turning out to be a difficult task for Musk's hatchet men, sources familiar with the matter tellNBC News, because the now-former staffers can't access their government email addresses anymore. Hindsight is 20-20, it seems. It'd be one thing if DOGE was accomplishing its stated goals of uncovering fraud and ending bureaucratic waste. But since Donald Trump has taken office, his billionaire buddy's misadventures have repeatedly disrupted crucial programs like Education Department training, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau operations, and National Institute of Health biomedical research while achieving only paltry savings that it claims are around $37 billion. There's a reason for that: Musk's DOGE campaign is an ideological one, wrapped in a thin veil of fiscal responsibility and in practice demonstrating astonishing ineptitude, as demonstrated by its handling of the NSSA. Of course the richest tech mogul in history sees cancer research, environmental protection, and nuclear responsibility as "wasteful" after all, what profits do they bring in?And while Trump has championed denuclearization a commendable task it's important that those dismantling the warheads our government has spent 80 years stockpiling are trained, educated, and supported as they do it. As it stands, it's looking like quick PR wins, not nuclear responsibility, are the order of the day.Share This Article

  • You're Using Your Electric Toothbrush Wrong. Common Mistakes and How to Do It Right
    www.cnet.com
Most people know that proper oral health technique is to brush your teeth twice a day for2 minutes per session. But did you know that the type of toothbrush you use can impact how clean your teeth are getting? Electric toothbrushes are becoming more affordable and easy to find, and they have several benefits. If you're making the switch to electric toothbrushes, you should know it requires a change in technique, too. Otherwise, you won't reap the many benefits this type of toothbrush offers. Read on to learn why you should use one, common mistakes and how to use electric toothbrushes correctly. Your teeth will thank you. Also, see why you shouldn't be rinsing your mouth out after you brush and the truth about oil pulling. Benefits of an electric toothbrush Upgrade your inbox Get cnet insider From talking fridges to iPhones, our experts are here to help make the world a little less complicated. There are several advantages to using an electric toothbrush, like manageability and effectiveness. Here are some of the most important:Electric toothbrushes might be more effectiveStudies have shown that electric toothbrushes may more efficiently prevent tooth decay. In 2014, the Cochrane Collaboration studied 56 clinical trials of unsupervised toothbrushing by more than 5,000 subjects, both adults and children. Researchers found that those who used an electric toothbrush for one to three months saw a reduction in plaque of 11% when compared to those who used a manual toothbrush for the same amount of time. The study also found that those who used electric toothbrushes experienced a 21% drop in plaque after three months of use when compared to their peers who used manual toothbrushes.Another study that followed adults for 11 years also found that participants who used an electric toothbrush had healthier teeth. The 2019 study, conducted by researchers at the University of Medicine Greifswald in Germany, found that those who used electric toothbrushes had healthier gums and kept 19% more teeth throughout the study than those who used manual brushes.A better choice for young children Peter Dazeley/Getty ImagesChildren often struggle to effectively clean their teeth properly with a manual toothbrush. They might get bored before they've finished brushing for the recommended 2 minutes, making it easier for plaque to build on their teeth. An electric toothbrush can help. Because the heads of such brushes rotate in different directions, they provide more brushing power and can more effectively remove plaque in a shorter time. Some electric toothbrushes have built-in timers, letting younger children know when they've hit that key 2-minute mark.More effective at removing plaque if you have bracesDo you have braces? If so, an electric toothbrush might be the better choice for your dental health. A study by the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics found that participants who used a manual toothbrush after getting braces were more likely to accumulate more plaque and increased risk of gingivitis than those who used electric toothbrushes.Better at removing plaqueYour goal when brushing your teeth is to remove as much plaque as possible. That's because the bacteria in plaque eat away at your teeth's protective enamel. Your teeth are more likely to suffer decay and you are more likely to experience painful cavities if you don't remove this plaque.Easier to use for someAn electric toothbrush might be easier to use for people with chronic pain or disabilities. That's because the brushes' rotating heads do most of the brushing. With manual toothbrushes, you have to do the brushing work yourself. How to properly use an electric toothbrushReady to make the switch to a powered toothbrush? Or, are you ready to learn how to correctly use yours? Fortunately, using one of these brushes is relatively simple and will take no more work than using a manual toothbrush.Make sure your toothbrush is charged. Your electric toothbrush should have an indicator that lights when it is charged.Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and begin brushing the outside surfaces of your teeth. Hold the brush's rotating heads against each tooth for 2 to 5 seconds before you move on to the next. After brushing the outer surfaces of your teeth, move to the inside surfaces, holding your brush's rotating heads against these surfaces for two to five seconds before moving on to the next.Next, hold your brush's heads against the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Hold your brush against these surfaces for a few seconds each before moving on to the next tooth. You're not done yet. Run the rotating heads of your electric toothbrush along your gum line and on your gums. This will remove any remaining plaque in your mouth. As a final step, gently clean the roof of your mouth and tongue with your brush. This is a good way to remove stubborn food particles. Brushing these areas of your mouth also can help freshen your breath.Common mistakes when using an electric toothbrushWhile it's easy to use an electric toothbrush, there are still mistakes you should avoid when brushing your teeth. Here are the most common:Not brushing long enoughDon't rush your brush. The ADA recommends that you brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day with a brush with soft bristles. Rushing this makes it more likely that you won't scrub away enough of the plaque that builds on your teeth. Not replacing a worn toothbrush headDon't overuse the heads of your electric toothbrush. The ADA recommends you change these heads every three to four months. If bristles on these heads are frayed or matted, you should immediately replace them, even if you've used them for less than three months. sergeyryzhov/Getty ImagesBrushing too hardYou might be tempted to push down hard when you brush your teeth, but this can have detrimental effects on your teeth and gums. Brushing too hard can wear down your gums and teeth. That could reduce the enamel on your teeth, making them overly sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. Brushing too hard could also cause your gums to recede.Using the wrong toothbrushYou can brush your teeth effectively with both an electric and manual toothbrush. You will need to use the right brush. The ADA recommends using a toothbrush with soft bristles and a long handle that allows you to reach the back of your mouth. Do you want to make sure your toothbrush is up to snuff? Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Brushes approved by the American Dental Association feature a seal on their packaging.

The results still need to be certified by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).In a statement provided to CNBC, CAUSE blamed the results on Amazons willingness to break the law, claiming, Amazons relentless and illegal efforts to intimidate us prove that this company is afraid of workers coming together to claim our power.Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards denied the company had broken any laws and said, Were glad that our team in Garner was able to have their voices heard, and that they chose to keep a direct relationship with Amazon.Workers at an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island voted to unionize in 2022, and workers at a Philadelphia location of Amazon-owned Whole Foods also voted in favor of unionization earlier this year. The grocery chain has asked the NLRB to set those results aside.Meanwhile, Amazons lawyers recently joined SpaceX in a legal challenge to the NLRBs structure.Topics

  • iPhone, Android Users Issued 3 Week Deadline To Update Phones
    www.forbes.com
All smartphone users must update nowgettySo, this is interesting. Whether youre an iPhone or Android user, you need to update your phone right away. Google and Apple have warned that attacks are underway, both quickly releasing security updates. Now theres a 3 week deadline to install those updates to ensure you are protected from the new attacks. The deadline comes by way of Americas cyber defense agency. Its a legal mandate for all federal employees to update or stop using unpatched phones, but its also a warning for everyone else to follow suit. CISA says it operates to help every organization better manage vulnerabilities and keep pace with threat activity.Androids deadline came first, and all phones should be updated by February 26. Google says CVE-2024-53104 may be under limited, targeted exploitation. Now iPhone users must update by March 5th, with Apple warning CVE-2025-24200 may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals. The attacks against both Androids and iPhones follow a similar theme. While Google gave little away, security specialist GrapheneOS attributed the new attacks to one of the USB bugs exploited by forensic data extraction tools.MORE FOR YOUThe iPhone threat is similar, with Apple describing it as a physical attack [that] may disable USB Restricted Mode on a locked device. That restriction is designed to frustrate physical forensics tools plugged into phones to extract data. It kicks in when an iPhone has been locked for an hour or more. Theres a quiet battle taking place between phone manufacturers and forensic tool providers, as seen when iPhones mysteriously rebooted when pulled out of police storage lockers. The fix is simple for iPhone users. Just make sure your phone is updated to iOS 18.3.1 at a minimum. Pixel users have also now been issued a fix with Androids February update. The situation for Samsung is more complex. The fix was not included in their own February update, albeit it may be rolling out behind the scenes. But that has not been officially confirmed, and so the deadline will be missed. If the optics of Android and iPhone users being under simultaneous U.S. government update mandates is not bad enough, Windows users have also joined the zero day party. This is less unusual, as zero-days have become a running theme with Microsofts Patch Tuesday updates for several months running now.Just as with iPhones and Androids, Windows 10 and Windows 11 users also have a CISA deadline to hit or stop using PCs. In this case, thats March 4th. There are two Windows vulnerabilities under attack, one impacts storage, risking a device being destabilized. The other is likely combined with other exploits to elevate an attackers privileges and potentially enable them to hijack a device.Whatever combination of Androids, iPhones or PCs youre running, just make sure you update all your devices as soon as you can. You have been warned.

  • Chrome tab groups now allow mobile-desktop sync, and its utter chaos
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsA dreadful life-saverIt has raised hellA bitter choice, because others suckIn September last year, Google announced a new feature that would let users sync their grouped tabs across mobile and desktop. It seems the company quietly started rolling it out in a phased manner.I noticed the new synced tab group featureon my OnePlus 13 earlier today, after the Chrome v133 update was installed on February 12, as per the Google Play logs.Recommended VideosBut according to Reddit posts, this feature had started appearing to users as far back as four months ago. Another post from two months ago mentions the arrival of this feature with a beautiful question for the Google team:Whose dumb idea is this?RelatedNadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsWhen you open Chrome on mobile and launch the tab switcher, theres now a new 22 icon at the top. When you tap on it, a list of grouped tabs appear, with the same color code that you picked while creating them on mobile or desktop.Notbaly, the ability to create tab groups landed on the iOS version, as well. As per the log notes (for v133.0.6943.33) that was released two weeks ago, the iPhone version of Chrome finally enabled tab grouping, complete with sync support for mobile-desktop workflow.I usually start my work on mobile. For news gathering via a curated feed, social media accounts, and official forums, its easier to get a quick look on a phone while sipping coffee with an ungodly concentration of caffeine.I quite like this two-column approach for synced tab groups. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsAs I come across newsworthy stuff, I neatly slot them across dated groups such as science, AI, computing, space, and more. Once the teams come online, I simply open the right tab group and share the material.I do this for my recreational interests, as well. Saving up articles for reading later, videos, memes, and more such stuff. With the cross-device sync, it has become much easier to access, and manage, those tabs directly on a larger screen. Its a fantastic way for getting some work, or work planning, done on the go. But not without its fair share of quirks. When I first enabled it using a Chrome flag on my iPad Pro and relaunched the browser, all my synced tabs automatically opened in the same windows. All 82 of them in an ungrouped fashion.Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsOf course, it was overwhelming, and its not something that should ideally happen. I initially grouped them all to get the look you see above, but eventually closed all those tabs because it was taking too many resources in the background.Synced tab groups sound like a productivity dream, but its not all sunshine and rainbows, it seems. The biggest conundrum is keeping the mobile (aka fun and casual) part of browsing separate from the work-related stuff on your desktop. If youre someone whose work depends on Chrome tabs, the list of synced tabs pulled from mobile and desktop quickly gets a little much. This is how one user described it:dumbes (sic) thing I saw from GoogleIts really annoying, wrote another frustrated Chrome users. When was the last time you handled a feature via Chrome flags? Exactly! Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsAnd heres the worst part. The underlying functionality appears to be broken. Multiple reports mention lost tab groups if one decides to disable the tab syncing system. On the official Google Chrome Help forum, multiple users have also detailed how synced tabs groups just randomly disappeared.Another frustrated user writes how tabs automatically land on a blank page after every restart. One report mentions how the tabs go back to the previous page after each fresh launch. Then we have reports of duplicate tab groups. There are a healthy few users struggling to disable tab group syncing, and for valid reasons. Heres an account from another community forum member:Now I have to go and spend lots of time recreating all my tab groups and again and have probably lost some of my links because the history feature only saves so many tab groupings. Abismal!!!!!App Store says this feature is ready for my iPad. It was hidden not in Chrome, but elsewhere. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsOne report mentions that despite customizing the sync behavior to keep the mobile and desktop tabs from appearing under a unified dashboard, they still see the synced tab groups across all their devices. It seems the respite comes not from in-app settings, but by disabling a Chrome flag, a route that is not directly available in the Settings section.I dont know many people around me who are familiar with the concept of using Chrome flags to enable or disable certain features. For them, it would simply be a futile attempt desperately digging through the apps Settings page, and eventually ending up frustrated.Oh, and did I mention synced tabs are an absolute resource hog? And when theyre not, they are simply a blank mess. This is the current status of my synced tabs on the iPad Pro. I can see the color code and subject, but have no idea about anything else.Look at this sheer chaos from synced tab groups on my iPad Pro. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsHere is another downright stupid part. The iPhone version of Chrome is ready for tab groups and has it enabled as soon as the updated version is installed. On the iPad Pro, I had to check a Chrome flag to get it working. Both are running v133 stable build, by the way. Thanks, Google!Alright, let me tell you an anecdote from merely two days ago. While testing a Dell laptop with a Snapdragon X Elite processor, I noticed that Chrome suddenly decided to give me hell. Random crashes, blank screen, and frozen UI? You know, the whole shebang.I switched to Edge, and had a less-frustrating time, though not entirely fuss-free. As usual, I opened a few dozen tabs across two windows, and slotted them across with beautiful color-coded groups.Out of nowhere, my laptop charger decided to stop working and I had to shift to my iPad Pro to continue my work. I launched Edge on my tablet, only to realize I can merely sync tabs across mobile and desktop, but not tab groups.Collections act somewhat like groups, but Edge has a separate tab groups feature, too. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsRacing to meet deadlines (you know how it is in a newsroom), I frantically searched the Microsoft community forum and Reddit, and realized that Edge doesnt allow you to sync tab groups between mobile and desktop by default. The only option left for me was to open the synced tab history from my laptop and then restore the requisite tabs on my iPad Pro.But thanks to my career in tech reporting, I know that Edge is based on the Chromium engine, which is why I could find an analogous flag for tab group syncing in Edge, just the way it is served in Chrome. My hunch was right. After a quick search, I found the Enable Tab Groups on iPad flag for Edge. Not many smartphone users are aware of using flags to enable or disable certain features. Plus, its an experimental system, which means inexplicable bugs and performance issues are commonplace. For most Edge users in my place, they would be otherwise left with a frustrating back-and-forth journey of checking out the synced tabs, finding the right one after scrolling a long list, and opening them one by one.Its a chore to recover tabs from a collection in Edge. Image used with permission by copyright holderI later realized you can create Collections in Edge, and that they sync on mobile. It was a relief. But thanks in no part to Apples WebKit mandate that ruins every mobile browser and the terrible cursor-response system in iPadOS, my relief with Edge was barely a stop-gap solution.I had to manually add each tab on my laptop to a new collection and wait for them to sync, before I could carry my work over to the iPad Pro. It was a hard-earned victory, but I returned to work with an added dose of rage directed at Apple and Microsoft. At the end of the day, I am left with Chrome, with all its polish and vices.Editors Recommendations

  • I'm a naming consultant, and sibling set names are hot right now. Here's what I recommend — and when to change course.
    www.businessinsider.com
Colleen Slagen is a mom of three and a name consultant. She said social media has increased the emphasis on sibling sets.Themes and styles can guide name selection, but going too similar can be cheesy, she says. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Colleen Slagen, author of "Naming Bebe: An interactive guide to choosing a baby name you love." It has been edited for length and clarity. The idea of giving siblings matching names isn't anything new, but social media has helped the idea spread far and wide. As a name consultant who's active on Instagram and TikTok, I hear from lots of parents who are concerned about creating a perfect sibling set of names. Parents believe names can create family cohesion and unity.Creating a sibling set can be fun but can also create stress for parents. Here's what to think of when you're creating a sibling set, and how to know when to change course which is something I had to do while naming my own three children.Remember that sibling sets aren't the end-allI worked with a mother who intensely regretted one of her children's names. It wasn't that she didn't like the name she just didn't think it matched with the names of her other children. She was even considering changing her child's name.I reminded her that a sibling set of names isn't the end-all-be-all. Our children are going to spend most of their lives existing independent of their sibling set. I never want parents to get too caught up in how cohesive their children's names are.Decide what unites your sibling setThe easiest way to create a sibling set of names is to think about a style category of names that you like. If you're into classic names like John, they'll always go well with other classics, like Dorothy.Or, you can focus on name meanings. Nature-inspired names like Sky and Juniper can make good sibling sets, for example.Another option is to think about length. I find that four-letter names often go well together. At the same time, it's OK to put together short and long names if they have a similar style. I love the sibling set Ada and Bernadette, for example.Subtlety goes a long wayWhen I worked with baby company JoJo Maman Bb on the do's and don'ts of sibling sets, I reminded parents that subtlety goes a long way. If your theme is too niche, it can come across as cheesy.I would never name sisters Goldie, Violet, and Scarlett, or brothers Bear and Fox that's a little too on the nose for me. The same can happen with names that sound too similar, like Banks and Brooks, or Adeline and Caroline. If there are multiple letters shared between the names, they may be too close.Don't be afraid to change courseI named my oldest child Rory, envisioning a sibling set of traditional Irish names. But as I got to know more kids and families in my hometown outside Boston, I realized that the Irish names I liked were too common for my taste. So, I pivoted to more traditional English names and now have Rory, Janie, and George.I see that parents are very concerned about equality in naming and worry about a child feeling left out. That thinking can box parents into a specific naming pattern. If you start with two J names, you might find yourself following in the Duggar's footsteps and giving all your children J monikers. But remember, you're not obligated to continue any patterns, and personally I don't think your children will mind.Don't fight true loveThinking about a sibling set can help guide you as you pick a name for your second, third, or sixth child. Yet occasionally, you'll discover a name that's just right for your new addition even if it doesn't match their siblings.I see this a lot with celebrities. Actor Ashley Tinsdale, for example, has two daughters named Jupiter (which feels hyper-modern, majestic, and rare) and Emerson (which is much more mainstream). Sometimes, you can't fight the name that feels right.
