'Love Is Blind' Is Back, but I Prefer This Underrated Netflix Dating Showwww.cnet.comLove Is Blind -- the popular Netflix show where engagements go down before face-to-face introductions -- is just one of the streamer's eyebrow-raising dating entries. The drama-filled series is currently debuting its eighth season, but I have another -- better -- addictive pick for your laid-back weekend. Reality TV aficionados should pour a glass of wine and unwind with the subtle, yet enthralling gem Dating Around.Dating Around is a relatively tame dating show compared with the other wild options out there. On Netflix'sSexy Beasts, people date while donning creature-themed special effects make-up, and on Too Hot to Handle, singles are crammed into an island villa and told to withhold from kissing and sex. Dating Around, on the other hand, focuses on plain, old first dates. That's right: The show is just about people going on casual dates in New York and New Orleans. Each episode follows one main dater as they sit down for five blind dates with different people at the same bar or restaurant. Though the dates occur over the course of a week, the show is edited to give the appearance they're all happening on the same night. (The lead daters wear consistent clothing to pull this off, executive producer Chris Culvenor has said). The stylish, visually intimate show seamlessly transitions between individual dates, showing us a minute of one date that deftly transforms into another. When the night wraps up, one guy or gal usually scores a second meet-up, and the show reveals who it is at the end of the episode. With all the added "stuff" on dating shows these days, the actual "let's talk and get to know each other" part can take a backseat. Dating Around proves that conversations, flying sparks -- and even the dull moments -- can stand on their own and make for vibrant, absorbing television. I consumed the second season's six episodes virtually overnight. There's no host and no plot twists on this dating show -- just people meeting other people, sharing drinks, food and, if both parties are feeling it, heading to another late-night venue. A range of distinct, generally likable main daters bolster the show. Across its two seasons, featured daters have been Filipino and Dominican, queer and straight, in their 20s and in their 60s. Leonard, a widower in his 60s, gives blind dating a go. NetflixThe singles answer standard first-date questions about their jobs, pets and what they're looking for. Some conversations fizzle, but others shine. For instance, in season 1, Sarah and Nick hit it off while talking about the 2004 comedy Sideways. (They charmingly quote the same tidbit from the film in sync.) The show's appeal comes from sparkling conversations and authentic first-date awkwardness, not being the kind of thing you love to hate-watch.Obviously, not everyone hits it off. On one Season 2 date, pescatarian Heather is clearly turned off when her blind date shares that he enjoys hunting ducks. "I used to have a pet duck," Heather says, conjuring up some awkward silence. But sometimes, things go well. Really well.A standout moment in season 2 comes when a lead dater named Brandon flirts with a man named Ronald. In tune with the show's stunning visuals, multicolored New Orleans city street lights shimmer in the backdrop. When they kiss, the camera spins around them, creating truly magical reality fare.Spoiler: Brandon surprisingly doesn't choose Ronald for the second date. That unpredictability is also part of the fun. Seeing who gets the invitation to return for a day-time meet-up is just one of the thoroughly engaging, suspenseful elements. There's no lack of reality dating show options these days, especially on Netflix. But if you are ready to lay eyes on something other than Love is Blind, this wonderful, refreshing reality show is a great option.0 Комментарии ·0 Поделились ·77 Просмотры

Best HBO and Max original TV seriesThis list focuses on shows that have premiered a new season since 2023 (or are currently renewed for more seasons) and have a score of at least 70 on Metacritic.Drama Warrick Page/Max The Pitt (2025- ) A lot can happen in one day on the job in a hospital's emergency department. This new, modern-day medical drama fills its 15-hour first season with what transpires during a single shift. Created by ER executive producer R. Scott Gemmill and starring ER's Noah Wyle as chief attendant Michael Rabinavitch, this compelling and realistic series is worth checking out. Liane Hentscher/HBO The Last of Us (2023- ) This TV adaptation of a popular video game follows hardened survivor Joel (The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal) and spunky teen Ellie (Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey) as they face human and not-quite-human dangers in a postapocalyptic world. Warner Media House of the Dragon (2022- ) Creating a show as beloved as Game of Thrones is tough to pull off, but HBO spin-off House of the Dragon soars to impressive heights. Set hundreds of years before fantasy series GoT, the prequel depicts how infighting and tragedy consume House Targaryen. Multiple players clamor for power, including Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). Max The White Lotus (2021- ) What was initially a limited series was so good HBO renewed it for a second season. The satire about guests at a fancy resort gradually unveils the darker edges of its picture-perfect postcard. The White Lotus features an ensemble cast, including Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Steve Zahn, Molly Shannon and more hilarious people, who make this series soar. If that wasn't enough, a murder mystery with the big reveal waiting till the very end will keep you thoroughly entertained. Amanda Searle/HBO Industry (2020- ) If you're missing the competition and drama on display in Succession, you should pay attention to this HBO series. The first season follows young graduates, including Harper Stern (Myha'la from Netflix's Leave the World Behind), as they step foot into London's Pierpoint & Co. The early 20-somethings hope for permanent jobs at the leading international bank. Eddy Chen/HBO Euphoria (2019- ) Euphoria's second installment is on Max now. This visually stunning series has garnered its fair share of fans, and it's not hard to see why -- the absorbing performances, cinematography and exploration of mature topics make this show shine. If nothing else, stick around to see Dune star Zendaya, who plays teenager Rue. Seacia Pavao/Max Julia (2022-23) Following the life of television chef and cookbook writer Julia Child, this drama doles out a generous serving of humor and charm (and delicious-looking food, of course). Sarah Lancashire is endlessly watchable as the famed American cook, who paved the way for future cooking shows with her long-running series The French Chef. Two seasons are available on the streamer now. Comedy Atsushi Nishijima/HBO Fantasmas (2024- ) Viewers have former Saturday Night Live writer Julio Torres to thank for this quirky and captivating HBO comedy. In episode 1 of the surreal series, an Alf-like sitcom takes a turn for the awkward and the letter "Q" gets a life story. Torres, also known for the HBO show Los Espookys and A24 film Problemista, stars as a version of himself, and guest actors include Steve Buscemi, Julia Fox, Emma Stone, Aidy Bryant and Bowen Yang. HBO The Rehearsal (2022- ) Nathan Fielder, best known for his Comedy Central show, Nathan For You (and cringe comedy), writes, directs and stars in this new HBO series. In the show, the comedian goes to extraordinary lengths to let people rehearse moments before they happen. In the first episode, Fielder helps a man prepare for a confession to a friend, and builds an exact replica of the bar they're planning to meet at (the attention to detail is incredible). After planning for any outlandish thing that might happen, we see how the real exchange between the two friends plays out. Bizarre and truly fascinating, The Rehearsal should get some time on your screen. Max Peacemaker (2022- ) Following the events of 2021's The Suicide Squad, this DC spinoff catches up with Peacemaker (John Cena), our towering, costume-clad protagonist who's just been released from the hospital. Peacemaker believes he's a superhero, but with his oft-repeated phrase about attaining "peace, no matter how many people I have to kill to get it," the title doesn't really suit him. The show establishes Peacemaker's next steps -- he isn't returning to prison, but instead taking part in a black ops mission that will (again) get his hands dirty. The show often lands its jokes, and you'll especially enjoy its entertaining supporting cast. Max The Sex Lives of College Girls (2021- ) Mindy Kaling co-created this dramedy about four 18-year-old girls who start their freshman year of college together in Vermont. With distinct personalities, the college newcomers navigate love and sex in their own ways. The show is funny, easily bingeable and bolstered by the chemistry between its female leads. A contemporary teen comedy showcasing messy experiences, relatable characters and raunchy jokes. Max Hacks (2021- ) The great Jean Smart rightfully takes the spotlight in this acclaimed comedy-drama series. Throwing iPads into swimming pools and delivering withering looks, Smart plays Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedy diva who must face the prospect of appealing to a younger audience or disappearing into obscurity. She's partnered with Ava (Hannah Einbinder), a young and equally snarky comedy writer, to freshen up her material. Perfectly balancing its biting insight into how the comedy business treats women, with the warmth of an odd couple buddy comedy, Hacks is one of the best original series to come out of HBO Max. Ryan Green/HBO The Righteous Gemstones (2019- ) This outrageous series highlights a highly dysfunctional family of famous televangelists called the Gemstones. In the show's first season, a member of the family is blackmailed and ridiculous antics ensue. John Goodman stars as the family patriarch, Eli, and Danny McBride, Edi Patterson and Adam Devine also commit to the bit, pulling off an absurd and addictive black comedy. The third season of the show is out now, and HBO has renewed the series for a fourth. HBO Somebody Somewhere (2022-24) Like feel-good shows? Somebody Somewhere is a great option you may have skipped over. In the first episode, 40-something Sam, living in her Kansas hometown and dealing with a recent loss, strikes up a friendship with a co-worker. Authentic, funny, with glowing performances, the half-hour series is the perfect thing to wind down to. Max Rap Sh!t (2022-23) A half-hour comedy series from Issa Rae (the star and creator of HBO's acclaimed series Insecure), Rap Sh!t introduces two former friends from high school. Shawna is an aspiring, socially conscious rapper, and Mia is a make-up artist and single mother who works multiple jobs. By the end of the first episode, the young women (now in their 20s) have reconnected and filmed a mesmerizing rap video that takes off on the internet. The show's protagonists are phone-obsessed, constantly checking up on social media and recording videos, and it impacts the viewing experience in interesting ways. Jake Giles Netter/Max Our Flag Means Death (2022-23) In this comedy set on the high seas, Rhys Darby plays Stede Bonnet, an aristocrat who abandons his cushy life and family to become the captain of a pirate ship. Spoiler: He hilariously bumbles through the gig. Game of Thrones fans may spot Hodor actor Kristian Nairn hanging out among the crew, and the series also stars Taika Waititi as Blackbeard. Max Starstruck (2021-23) Starstruck is a classic screwball comedy, starring the lovably goofy Rose Matafeo. She plays Jessie, a twentysomething Londoner who parties it up on New Year's Eve, then later discovers she had a one-night stand with Tom Kapoor, a celebrity played by Nikesh Patel. Follow Jessie as she juggles odd jobs, from cinema worker to nanny, and her blossoming relationship with a film star that involves no high jinks whatsoever. Watch out for scene-stealer Minnie Driver as Tom's agent in this witty, neatly crafted comedy package. Max The Other Two (2019-23) The sibling rivalry is strong and primed for hilarity in this comedy from a couple of Saturday Night Live writers. Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider tell the story of Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Helne Yorker), siblings in their late 20s who struggle with the sudden rise to internet fame of their 13-year-old Justin Bieber-channeling brother. Molly Shannon is a treat as their mother, Pat, ushering her children through open doors to success. Once you get over the gimmicky premise, The Other Two's pop culture satire and surprisingly heartfelt storylines are a winning combination. Schitt's Creek fans should give this a look. HBO Succession (2018-23) This satirical show follows the family controlling the world's biggest media and entertainment company, whose members become embroiled in a battle to take over as their father's health declines. John P. Johnson/HBO Barry (2018-23) In Barry's opening scene, SNL alum Bill Hader casually leaves a hotel room that contains a dead body. The actor plays hitman Barry Berkman, who isn't happy with life or his unconventional profession, but his path is altered when he travels to Los Angeles and gets roped into performing in an acting class. Barry features plenty of violence and a deeply troubled protagonist, leaning into the "dark" part of its dark comedy designation. But it's also really funny, and there are four seasons to binge. At the very least, you'll want to tune in for truly great scenes between Hader and his acting teacher, played by Henry Winkler. Animation Max Creature Commandos (2024- ) This engaging DC series from James Gunn examines the backstories of a ragtag team of monsters put together for dangerous missions. From Frankenstein's bride to a Nazi-targeting robot to a creature resembling both a human and a furry animal, the Creature Commandos are a motley crew worth spending violent, unhinged time with. The series is the first in Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe, and it's already renewed for season 2. Max Harley Quinn (2019- ) Harley Quinn is an adult-oriented animated series that centers on the baseball bat-wielding antihero. Kaley Cuoco voices the mayhem-prone Harley, who in the first episode breaks up with the Joker and tells him she's going to replace him as the top villain in Gotham. The hilarious, action-packed show also features characters like Poison Ivy, and four seasons are available to binge. It premiered on the DC Universe streaming service before moving to HBO Max. Max Scavengers Reign (2023) An unusual alien world and the humans stranded on it are the subject of this spectacular sci-fi series on Max. The story follows characters marooned on a peculiar planet that's home to fascinating creatures and landscapes. The world is beautiful but also poses dangers to the human guests, who seek out their ship and fellow crew members. An expansion of a 2016 animated short film, Scavengers Reign is a compelling, 12-episode saga you won't be able to quit watching. Crime Macall Polay/HBO The Penguin (2024- ) Set between Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman and the upcoming sequel The Batman Part II, The Penguin stars Colin Farrell as the underestimated and ambitious Gotham gangster (though you'll barely recognize the Oscar-nominated actor). The thrilling, eight-episode season chronicles Oz Cobb's rise and is enhanced by other complicated characters, such as Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone and Rhenzy Feliz's Victor Aguilar. Michele K. Short/HBO True Detective (2014-) True Detective may be best known for its first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but the anthology series continues to release intriguing new stories. The latest, which premiered in 2024 after a five-year hiatus, follows Jodie Foster and Kali Reis' characters as they tackle a chilling mystery in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. It includes a new showrunner, Issa Lpez, who will helm an upcoming fifth edition.0 Комментарии ·0 Поделились ·87 Просмотры

Guide: Best Wario Games Of All Timewww.nintendolife.comImage: Nintendo LifeAhh, Wario, everyone's favourite garlic-loving, chaos-breeding antihero. A mirror to Mario whom he frequently competes against Wario has been gracing the Mario franchise since 1992 when he was the main villain in the game Boy classic Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden CoinsSince then, Wario has gone from strength to strength, branching out to puzzlers, golf, tennis, soccer, parties, and even getting two of his own series: Wario Land, and WarioWare. So, to celebrate the release of the fabulous Wario Land 4 on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack's GBA app, we want to focus on the former, for the most part. Wario has a handful of excellent platformers to sink your teeth into, which range from the hazy Game Boy days all the way to the Wii. Maybe one day we'll get a new Wario platformer.Okay, with that out of the way, let's go through the best Wario platformers of all time, ranked by you, dear readers. On this page: Best Wario Games Of All TimeBest Wario Platformers Ever9. Wario: Master of Disguise (DS)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: SuzakRelease Date: 5th Mar 2007 (USA) / 1st Jun 2007 (UK/EU)Developed by Suzak, Wario: Master of Disguise is a bit of an oddball. As you might have gleaned, disguises are the primary gameplay mechanic in this adventure. Each has different abilities and allows Wario to reach areas he could not before. This is in stark contrast to the Wario Land games, where you're only able to transform by getting hit by specific enemies in specific locations. While the concept of being able to transform at any time sounds good on paper, the execution leaves a lot to be desired due to over-reliance on the touchscreen. Switching to different disguises, as well as using most of the abilities, is done with the stylus. Drawing specific shapes to don disguises is a massive source of frustration, as you have to be extremely accurate for the game to recognise the one you want.If you're willing to slog through, you can catch occasional glimpses of brilliance, but they're just too few and far between.8. Virtual Boy Wario Land (VB)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo R&D1Release Date: 1st Nov 1995 (USA)The fantastic visual design and great audio enhance this top-notch platformer. Its a game you will keep coming back to, either to try and get a different ending or just because its so much fun to play through. Its unfortunate that there aren't more levels but Virtual Boy Wario Land is thoroughly deserving of its reputation and highly recommended. If you have a VB, then this is a must-have game.7. Wario World (GCN)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: TreasureRelease Date: 24th Jun 2003 (USA) / 20th Jun 2003 (UK/EU)There's nothing particularly inventive within Wario World and its appealing visuals and fun boss encounters can only go so far to offset its short length, lack of challenge, and how incredibly tedious and repetitive it all is. Even though we know it has its fans!Taking Nintendo's other Gamecube platformers into account along with Wario's own rich heritage of handheld games it's tough to give Wario World a recommendation. Unless you're able to find any appeal in the idea of wearing out your GameCube pad's 'B' button while your eyes glaze over, you should really stick to Wario's Game Boy and DS adventures.6. Wario Land: Shake It! (Wii)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Good-FeelRelease Date: 29th Sep 2008 (USA) / 26th Sep 2008 (UK/EU)A cracking 2D platformer from the folks at Good-Feel, Wario Land: Shake It! (or Wario Land: The Shake Dimension if you prefer the European flavour) brought the antihero's antics to Wii in fine fashion. It's hardly the longest 2D platformer you'll ever play, but its gorgeous art style and Wario's adorably greedy antics give us the warm fuzzies when we think back to 2008.5. Wario Land II (GB)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo R&D1Release Date: 9th Mar 1998 (USA) / 26th Mar 1998 (UK/EU)Big fans of the first game (Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3) might lament Wario Land II's sudden significant change in gameplay, but if you give it a try, you'll find that it's actually rather brilliant. All the unique new gameplay features help flesh the series out and turn it into a wildly different, yet still equally entertaining time. This game would quickly get a Game Boy Color version with backwards compatibility for the original Game Boy, but its standalone grey cart release makes it eligible for this list and a fine entry it is, too.4. Wario Land II (GBC)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: NintendoRelease Date: 10th Feb 1999 (USA) / 25th Feb 1999 (UK/EU)"Hold on", you say, "Wario Land II on Game Boy is already here?" Yes, well, this is the Game Boy Color version. We're keeping this on the list for completionist's sake, as we do on our other lists, but we know the two games are similar.Anyway, with that out of the way, no matter what version of Wario Land II you go for, you'll be more than satisfied thanks to that varied platforming gameplay. The new colourful visuals also add a new layer of mayhem to an already excellent handheld platformer.3. Wario Land 3 (GBC)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo R&D1Release Date: 30th May 2000 (USA) / 14th Apr 2000 (UK/EU)Available On: Nintendo Switch OnlineLike Wario Land II before it, Wario Land 3 is, in some ways, more of a puzzle game than an action game and it's essential to know going in that this is very different from a standard Mario platformer. The Wario concept was refined further in this third entry, with a ton of stages and different paths making it easily the biggest Wario Land in terms of scope. If you enjoyed the previous adventure, then this generously expanded outing is likely to please you even more. If this is your first Wario Land, you absolutely must try it.And if the previous one wasn't your cup of tea? Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!2. Wario Land 4 (GBA)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo R&D1Release Date: 19th Nov 2001 (USA) / 17th Nov 2001 (UK/EU)Available On: NSO + Expansion PackWario Land 4 is a testament to quality over quantity, with the clever nonlinear level structures that lend themselves to multiple playthroughs and further exploration to unlock all the extras. It's a platformer for platforming veterans, full of impeccable level design and a quirky audiovisual presentation that would go on to set the precedent for the WarioWare series. If you're a fan of platformers which will probably be the majority of you if you're Nintendo aficionados Wario Land 4 is an absolute must-play.1. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (GB)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo R&D1Release Date: 7th Feb 1994 (USA) / 13th May 1994 (UK/EU)With Wario Land, Nintendo completely reinvented its portable platformer and gave its greedy new character his own game, instead of merely plopping him down into the middle of another standard Super Mario Land presentation.Indeed, anybody who might have picked up this sequel expecting something similar was in for a shock. A wealth of new gameplay features combined with a unique visual and musical style make this title stand on its own and it gives fans of the previous Mario Land releases a fresh spin on the series. If you want to experience some of the best platforming the Game Boy system has to offer, you needn't look any further.Time to take a breather after that glut of Wario chaos, right? There's some good stuff there!Best Wario Games FAQGarlic peeled? Ready to saut? Well hold fire for a second let's go over some hot questions to keep things from boiling over. What about other Wario games? If this list seems a little slight, then don't worry we know Wario has starred in many other games. Most prominently, the WarioWare series, but also a few puzzle spin-offs.But for this list, we've focused exclusively on platformers the Lands, the... World. You get it. That means Mario & Wario, Wario's Woods, and Wario Blast aren't featured here. For WarioWare, we have a separate list ranking all of Wario's microgame-featuring misadventures, so have a look at that. RANK!Are any Wario games playable on Nintendo Switch Online?Yep! Here's every playable Wario game (not just platformer) on Nintendo Switch Online:NESWario's WoodsGame Boy (Color)Wario Land 3Game Boy AdvanceWarioWare, Inc. Mega Microgame$Wario Land 4 Every retro game available with an NSO sub (plus the Expansion Pack)Are there any Wario games on Switch?Outside of the WarioWare games and the Nintendo Switch Online additions, Wario doesn't have his own game on Nintendo Switch. Criminal!Maybe Wario Land will make its grand return on Switch 2.Are there any games like Wario Land?Yep, in fact, there are two recent indie games that channel the chaotic spirit of Wario Land.Pizza Tower, in its presentation, gameplay loop, and general chaotic nature, is very much a Wario-inspired adventure. It's also hilarious and fun to pick up and play.Similarly, the Antonblast devs have specifically cited Wario Land as inspiration for the madcap platformer, where you smash through levels. If you're a fan of Wario, then you owe it to yourself to try these games out. A genuine blastWario would be proudWhat about Waluigi games? You need to take that up with Nintendo Waluigi hasn't had his own game. Ever. Open source LLMs hit Europes digital sovereignty roadmaptechcrunch.comLarge language models (LLMs) landed on Europes digital sovereignty agenda with a bang last week, as news emerged of a new program to develop a series of truly open source LLMs covering all European Union languages. This includes the current 24 official EU languages, as well as languages for countries currently negotiating for entry to the EU market, such as Albania. Future-proofing is the name of the game.OpenEuroLLM is a collaboration between some 20 organizations, co-led by Jan Haji, a computational linguist from the Charles University in Prague, and Peter Sarlin, CEO and co-founder of Finnish AI lab Silo AI, which AMD acquired last year for $665 million. The project fits a broader narrative that has seen Europe push digital sovereignty as a priority, enabling it to bring mission-critical infrastructure and tools closer to home. Most of the cloud giants are investing in local infrastructure to ensure EU data stays local, while AI darling OpenAI recently unveiled a new offering that allows customers to process and store data in Europe.Elsewhere, the EU recently signed an $11 billion deal to create a sovereign satellite constellation to rival Elon Musks Starlink. So OpenEuroLLM is certainly on-brand.However, the stated budget just for building the models themselves is 37.4 million, with roughly 20 million coming from the EUs Digital Europe Programme a drop in the ocean compared to what the giants of the corporate AI world are investing. The actual budget is more when you factor in funding allocated for tangential and related work, and arguably the biggest expense is compute. The OpenEuroLLM projects partners include EuroHPC supercomputer centers in Spain, Italy, Finland, and the Netherlands and the broader EuroHPC project has a budget of around 7 billion. But the sheer number of disparate participating parties, spanning academia, research, and corporations, have led many to question whether its goals are achievable. Anastasia Stasenko, co-founder of LLM company Pleias, questioned whether a sprawling consortia of 20+ organizations could have the same measured focus of a homegrown private AI firm.Europes recent successes in AI shine through small focused teams like Mistral AI and LightOn companies that truly own what theyre building, Stasenko wrote. They carry immediate responsibility for their choices, whether in finances, market positioning, or reputation.Up to scratchThe OpenEuroLLM project is either starting from scratch or it has a head start depending on how you look at it.Since 2022, Haji has also been coordinating the High Performance Language Technologies (HPLT) project, which has set out to develop free and reusable datasets, models, and workflows using high-performance computing (HPC). That project is scheduled to end in late 2025, but it can be viewed as a sort of predecessor to OpenEuroLLM, according to Haji, given that most of the partners on HPLT (aside from the U.K. partners) are participating here, too. This [OpenEuroLLM] is really just a broader participation, but more focused on generative LLMs, Haji said. So its not starting from zero in terms of data, expertise, tools, and compute experience. We have assembled people who know what theyre doing we should be able to get up to speed quickly.Haji said that he expects the first version(s) to be released by mid-2026, with the final iteration(s) arriving by the projects conclusion in 2028. But those goals might still seem lofty when you consider that there isnt much to poke at yet beyond a bare-bones GitHub profile. In that respect, we are starting from scratch the project started on Saturday [February 1], Haji said. But we have been preparing the project for a year [the tender process opened in February 2024].From academia and research, organizations spanning Czechia, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Finland, and Norway are part of the OpenEuroLLM cohort, in addition to the EuroHPC centers. From the corporate world, Finlands AMD-owned AI lab Silo AI is on board, as are Aleph Alpha (Germany), Ellamind (Germany), Prompsit Language Engineering (Spain), and LightOn (France). One notable omission from the list is that of French AI unicorn Mistral, which has positioned itself as an open source alternative to incumbents such as OpenAI. While nobody from Mistral responded to TechCrunch for comment, Haji did confirm that he tried to initiate conversations with the startup, but to no avail.I tried to approach them, but it hasnt resulted in a focused discussion about their participation, Haji said. The project could still gather new participants as part of the EU program thats providing funding, though it will be limited to EU organizations. This means that entities from the U.K. and Switzerland wont be able to take part. This flies in contrast to the Horizon R&D program, which the U.K. rejoined in 2023 after a prolonged Brexit stalemate and which provided funding to HPLT.Build upThe projects top-line goal, as per its tagline, is to create: A series of foundation models for transparent AI in Europe. Additionally, these models should preserve the linguistic and cultural diversity of all EU languages current and future. What this translates to in terms of deliverables is still being ironed out, but it will likely mean a core multilingual LLM designed for general-purpose tasks where accuracy is paramount. And then also smaller quantized versions, perhaps for edge applications where efficiency and speed are more important. This is something we still have to make a detailed plan about, Haji said. We want to have it as small but as high-quality as possible. We dont want to release something which is half-baked, because from the European point-of-view this is high-stakes, with lots of money coming from the European Commission public money. While the goal is to make the model as proficient as possible in all languages, attaining equality across the board could also be challenging. That is the goal, but how successful we can be with languages with scarce digital resources is the question, Haji said. But thats also why we want to have true benchmarks for these languages, and not to be swayed toward benchmarks which are perhaps not representative of the languages and the culture behind them.In terms of data, this is where a lot of the work from the HPLT project will prove fruitful, with version 2.0 of its dataset released four months ago. This dataset was trained 4.5 petabytes of web crawls and more than 20 billion documents, and Haji said that they will add additional data from Common Crawl (an open repository of web-crawled data) to the mix.The open source definitionIn traditional software, the perennial struggle between open source and proprietary revolves around the true meaning of open source. This can be resolved by deferring to the formal definition as per the Open Source Initiative, the industry stewards of what are and arent legitimate open source licenses. More recently, the OSI has formed a definition of open source AI, though not everyone is happy with the outcome. Open source AI proponents argue that not only models should be freely available, but also the datasets, pretrained models, weights the full shebang. The OSIs definition doesnt make training data mandatory, because it says AI models are often trained on proprietary data or data with redistribution restrictions.Suffice it to say, the OpenEuroLLM is facing these same quandaries, and despite its intentions to be truly open, it will probably have to make some compromises if its to fulfill its quality obligations. The goal is to have everything open. Now, of course, there are some limitations, Haji said. We want to have models of the highest quality possible, and based on the European copyright directive we can use anything we can get our hands on. Some of it cannot be redistributed, but some of it can be stored for future inspection. What this means is that the OpenEuroLLM project might have to keep some of the training data under wraps, but be made available to auditors upon request as required for high-risk AI systems under the terms of the EU AI Act.We hope that most of the data [will be open], especially the data coming from the Common Crawl, Haji said. We would like to have it all completely open, but we will see. In any case, we will have to comply with AI regulations. Two for oneAnother criticism that emerged in the aftermath of OpenEuroLLMs formal unveiling was that a very similar project launched in Europe just a few short months previous. EuroLLM, which launched its first model in September and a follow-up in December, is co-funded by the EU alongside a consortium of nine partners. These include academic institutions such as the University of Edinburgh and corporations such as Unbabel, which last year won millions of GPU training hours on EU supercomputers.EuroLLM shares similar goals to its near-namesake: To build an open source European Large Language Model that supports 24 Official European Languages, and a few other strategically important languages.Andre Martins, head of research at Unbabel, took to social media to highlight these similarities, noting that OpenEuroLLM is appropriating a name that already exists. I hope the different communities collaborate openly, share their expertise, and dont decide to reinvent the wheel every time a new project gets funded, Martins wrote.Haji called the situation unfortunate, adding that he hoped they might be able to cooperate, though he stressed that due to the source of its funding in the EU, OpenEuroLLM is restricted in terms of its collaborations with non-EU entities, including U.K. universities. Funding gapThe arrival of Chinas DeepSeek, and the cost-to-performance ratio it promises, has given some encouragement that AI initiatives might be able to do far more with much less than initially thought. However, over the past few weeks, many have questioned the true costs involved in building DeepSeek. With respect to DeepSeek, we actually know very little about what exactly went into building it, Peter Sarlin, who is technical co-lead on the OpenEuroLLM project, told TechCrunch.Regardless, Sarlin reckons OpenEuroLLM will have access to sufficient funding, as its mostly to cover people. Indeed, a large chunk of the costs of building AI systems is compute, and that should mostly be covered through its partnership with the EuroHPC centers. You could say that OpenEuroLLM actually has quite a significant budget, Sarlin said. EuroHPC has invested billions in AI and compute infrastructure, and have committed billions more into expanding that in the coming few years. Its also worth noting that the OpenEuroLLM project isnt building toward a consumer- or enterprise-grade product. Its purely about the models, and this is why Sarlin reckons the budget it has should be ample. The intent here isnt to build a chatbot or an AI assistant that would be a product initiative requiring a lot of effort, and thats what ChatGPT did so well, Sarlin said. What were contributing is an open source foundation model that functions as the AI infrastructure for companies in Europe to build upon. We know what it takes to build models, its not something you need billions for.Since 2017, Sarlin has spearheaded AI lab Silo AI, which launched in partnership with others, including the HPLT project the family of Poro and Viking open models. These already support a handful of European languages, but the company is now readying the next iteration Europa models, which will cover all European languages. And this ties in with the whole not starting from scratch notion espoused by Haji there is already a bedrock of expertise and technology in place.Sovereign stateAs critics have noted, OpenEuroLLM does have a lot of moving parts which Haji acknowledges, albeit with a positive outlook.Ive been involved in many collaborative projects, and I believe it has its advantages versus a single company, he said. Of course theyve done great things at the likes of OpenAI to Mistral, but I hope that the combination of academic expertise and the companies focus could bring something new.And in many ways, its not about trying to outmaneuver Big Tech or billion-dollar AI startups; the ultimate goal is digital sovereignty: (mostly) open foundation LLMs built by, and for, Europe.I hope this wont be the case, but if, in the end, we are not the number one model, and we have a good model, then we will still have a model with all the components based in Europe, Haji said. This will be a positive result.0 Комментарии ·0 Поделились ·80 Просмотры

I tried the viral sleep earbuds developed by ex Bose engineers - and they felt like a dreamwww.zdnet.comZDNET's key takeaways The Ozlo Sleepbuds, created by three Bose engineers, launched last fall, and they are the most useful sleep earbuds I've tested so far The sound is perfect for masking environmental annoyances that keep you awake, and the fit is comfortable and secure. The sleep tracking feature hasn't hit the earbuds yet, and setup took a few tries and several glitches, but once these work in your ears, they get you to bed instantly. more buying choices I take my sleep as seriously as some athletes take their workout or diet routine. While I can control everything from the steps I take ahead of bedtime to the pajamas I wear or the sleep mask I put over my eyes to drown out light; one uncontrollable factor often keeps me awake: the sounds outside my Brooklyn apartment. My bedroom overlooks a busy -- and often noisy -- street. As I write this, motorcycle engines rev, and a firetruck's siren blares in the background. I've woken up to police sirens, honking cars, noisy pedestrians, and my neighbors, who loudly celebrate with songs and festivities into the wee hours of the night.During the 2023 holiday season, the loud voices singing songs until 1 a.m. kept me awake and made it difficult to get to bed. But this year, I took the noisy opportunity to test out the Ozlo Sleepbuds, and, boy, am I glad I did. They helped me get to sleep in minutes. For that reason, ZDNET and the rest of the CNET Group picked it for a CES award for 2025. You cansee all 12 of the Best of CES winnersselected by the CNET Group (ZDNET, CNET, PCMag, Mashable, and Lifehacker) in partnership with the organization that runs CES. details View at Ozlo Sleep The Ozlo Sleep earbuds are some of the most comfortable and effective sleep earbuds I've ever tested, and I can't recommend them enough to anybody who needs to quiet down their bedtime environment to catch a few more Z's, that is, if they're willing to pay the $300 price tag. Keep reading to learn why. Also: I tried a subscription-less smart ring in place of my Oura - and it did some things betterIf you've heard anything about Ozlo, it's probably because you were interested in the discontinued Bose Sleepbuds that the audio brand cut the cord on in 2020. The buds "didn't reach the level of adoption" Bose hoped they would, despite their avid following, Bose spokesperson Joanne Berthiaume told The Verge. The Ozlo Sleepbuds are the Sleepbuds reincarnate, taking some of Bose's proprietary tech, like the StayHear Plus tips, and implementing them into a new product. The earbuds come in a hefty but sleek case, and you can customize your ear tip and ear wing size to suit your desired fit. Set up was where I confronted the most issues, and the connection fell through twice before I could link up with the app. Once I was connected, the app's introductory pages glitched, and I found myself closing out the app to relaunch it several times. When my settings in the app were confirmed,d and the connection was established, I had no trouble using these buds.Thankfully, you don't need the app to get white noise out of the earbuds from the jump, and the first night I tested them, I used them easily without the app. But if you want customization, the Ozlo app provides ten different sleep sounds (or masking sounds) you can sort through. There's an earbud alarm you can use (though I have bad luck with these in-ear alarms, given how I wake up with my earbuds strewn across my bed), a sleep timer that shuts down the buds after a customizable amount of time to save battery, and an Auto-Play Sleep Sound feature that detects once you've fallen asleep and switches from the podcast or music you're playing to the masking sound you've selected. The Ozlo Sleepbuds hit the market with two key features that are unfortunately missing: sleep-tracking and environment-sensing capabilities. Eventually, Ozlo will roll out an over-the-air update to add these features. I will test them out once they are available and update my review with my thoughts, although it is disappointing that these key selling points aren't available at launch. These buds are made to last in your ears through a night's sleep. A pair of earbuds rarely last the night in my ears, given how regularly I move around in my sleep. When I wear sleep earbuds, it's to help me fall asleep amid a noisy backdrop of sound outside my window. Once I'm asleep, I can stay asleep and am not woken up by much. I only need them to stay in and fit well at the beginning of the night; I don't need them in for the entire night -- though I don't mind when they are.The ear wings on the Sleepbuds stabilize the fit for a long time, and when I wake up, normally, one earbud is still in my ear (there was one night over the past week of testing where both stayed in the entire night). The battery life lasted me about one and a half nights before it was due for a recharge. Nina Raemont/ZDNETEvery night I wore these buds, I slept like a baby and fell asleep within minutes. I found myself first gravitating towards them on nights when my neighbors celebrated on the street outside my apartment. However, I eventually put them in my ears even when outside disturbances were negligible. They're simply that comfortable and effective. They succeed at masking noise around me and isolating me from the pesky engines and sirens outside. One area that I couldn't test was whether they mask snoring. From my experience using them alone in my bedroom to dim outside sounds, I'd say they do a good job of removing ambient distractions, but I can't confirm how effective they'd be at minimizing snores right next to you. Also: The best sleep headphones you can buyIf you don't shuffle in bed throughout the night, these will stick in your ears -- and they're quite comfortable for side sleepers. I didn't experience any pressure built up over time, and, in the mornings, I didn't feel any soreness or sensitivity. One of my favorite aspects of these buds is the sleep sounds paired with the Sleepbuds' audio strength, which is loud enough to completely mask external sounds outside my bedroom window while being quiet and neutral enough to send me to sleep. That's a difficult feat and one that I had trouble finding while testing competing sleep earbuds.ZDNET's buying adviceSo, who are these for? People who prioritize comfort in a sleep earbud and are willing to pay $300 for it. These earbuds dissolved in my ears during sleep, and as I shuffled from one side to the other, I found myself absolutely content with them in my ears. The Ozlo Sleepbuds masked noises properly and efficiently, dulling down the outside hubbub on one of the busiest weeks of the year in my neighborhood. So, yes, they work as a noise masker (they technically aren't noise canceling). Setup and connection can be a bit dodgy, but brand-new product launches inevitably come with bugs. The product itself is great once it's connected. I look forward to sleeping with these earbuds the next time my neighborhood is up all night singing and partying.Featured reviews0 Комментарии ·0 Поделились ·80 Просмотры

The Truth About Asteroid 2024 YR4 And Why You Shouldnt Worry (Yet)www.forbes.comToplineThe media is full of reports of a city killer asteroid called 2024 YR4 that's destined to impact Earth in 2032, with astronomers about to be left helpless as it moves out of view of telescopes until 2028. Heres what experts think. The predicted orbit of asteroid 2024 YR4. ESAKey FactsAll asteroids orbit the sun, and some have orbital paths that cross Earths. Thats the case with 2024 YR4, one of about 20,000 Apollo-type asteroids that orbit the sun from about the same distance as Earth, so are a potential threat.2024 YR4 orbits the sun every four Earth years, so it passes relatively close to Earth once every four years. That just happened. 2024 YR4 was found, for the first time, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System on Dec. 27, 2024, two days after its closest approach, when it got to within 515,000 miles (828,800 kilometers) of Earth, about twice as far as the moon. Its four-year orbit has had astronomers scrambling to examine archive images from sky-survey telescopes from 2020, 2016, 2012 and so on. Its trajectory also means its next due to pass close to Earth in December 2028 and 2032, when its just-calculated orbit has it potentially impacting Earth on Dec. 22, 2032.Theres currently a 2.3% chance of it hitting Earth. For that reason, it sits atop the Sentry list of objects whose orbital trajectories suggest a possible impact with Earth in the future. It also has a value of 3 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, the International Astronomical Unions list of asteroids that come close to Earth. Thats higher than any other asteroid, though as more data on its orbit is obtained its expected to eventually be declared safe.Should We Worry About Asteroid 2024 Yr4 Impacting Earth?People pick up somewhat arbitrary scare stories about killer asteroids, but I think this one is a little different, said Danny Steeghs, head of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Group at the University of Warwick in the U.K, in an interview. This is rare. Once every five years, you might have something like this, but mostly the threats disappear. Actual impact events are one every hundreds of years. An asteroid as threatening as 2024 YR4 is newsworthy because it doesnt happen very often, yet it almost certainly wont strike Earth. It could pass by at 50 times the diameter of Earth, said Luca Conversi, NEO Coordination Centre Manager and NEOMIR Study Scientist at the European Space Agency's ESRIN site in Frascati, Italy, in an interview. Conversi has plotted the region where the asteroid could pass in 2032. The uncertainty we have is much bigger than the distance between the Earth and the moon, he said.If it does strike Earth, it will do so on Dec. 22, 2032, with the risk corridor calculated to be across the eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea, and South Asia, according to IAWN. Astronomers can be accurate about this because the plane of the asteroids orbit is known, so this risk corridor is unlikely to change much, though it would likely narrow if and when an impact is imminent. How Big Is Asteroid 2024 Yr4?Judging purely on how bright it appears in telescope images, 2024 YR4 is thought to be between about 130 and 300 ft. (40 and 90 meters) in diameter. That's a huge range, which astronomers are keen to refine. After all, a 300ft./90m asteroid is about 11 times larger in volume than a 130ft./40m asteroid, making it far more destructive on impact. Its the difference between, say, a commercial airplane and a large cruise ship. Nor do scientists know its density or what its made of, only that its not ice or metal. When it was initially picked up in December by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System using a modest telescope it was very bright. It was also detected by many other telescopes, including by Steeghs and his colleagues on Dec. 27, 2024, using the GOTO telescope in Australia, which scans the skies for transient objects so sees asteroids serendipitously. Its very quickly fading and now we need the largest telescopes available to us to potentially have further measurements of it in the next weeks and months to try to refine its orbit, said Steeghs.Asteroid 2024 YR4 as seen in late-Decemner 2024 by the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer ... [+] (GOTO) Telescope in Australia. (used with permission)GOTO/University of Warwick (D.Steeghs/K.Ulaczyk)Key BackgroundAccording to Sky and Telescope, 350 observations of 2024 YR4 have been made so far by astronomers at over 50 observatories since the International Asteroid Warning Network issued a rare warning on Jan. 29, 2025, but its a race against time. Today, its half the sun-Earth distance from Earth in the Canis Major constellation, and receding fast. By April it will be invisible to ground-based optical telescopes. NASAs James Webb Space Telescope will be used to make about four hours of infrared observations in March and May before it too loses sight of the object. Its data will focus on the heat of 2024 YR4, not its orbit, but may help refine where on Earth it might strike. After these last few observations, it wont be until late 2028, when 2024 YR4 approaches Earth next time that astronomers will get another view of it. Trouble is, that pass will be distant, with 2024 YR4 only getting to within 4.7 million miles (7.5 million kilometers). That will make radar observations the only kind of observation that could pin down the asteroids size for sure impossible. Radar observations wont be viable until 2032, just months before it could strike Earth.Further Reading0 Комментарии ·0 Поделились ·75 Просмотры
