• The 10 Worst Stephen King Movies Ever Made
    screencrush.com
Stephen King is one of those prolific writers whose scope of work is so vast, and whose better projects are so beloved, that its easy to forget about the stuff that isnt so good. The same is true for all the movies based on his short stories and novelsso many of them, at this point, are so good, that we barely even think about the ones that didnt quite hit. For every Dreamcatcher or Firestarter theres a Carrie, a Geralds Game, a Shining.Well, we think about it. We think about it so often that weve decided to collect the worst into a list of their own. For an author as beloved as King, whose work is, for the most part, pretty cinematic even in written form, there are tons of terrible movies based on his oeuvre of short stories and novels that almost make you wonder if the source material is bad, too. (Its usually not.) That said, its always fun to look back at the bad stuff to see where it all went wrong and what could have been improved. So, lets take a look back at some of the true failures, the worst of what is, all told, a markedly bad cinematic universe. There are probably at least twice as many actually bad movies based on Kings work, but were looking back at ten of them, starting in the mid-80s all the way to just a few years ago, stories that span everything from alien invasions to werewolves to werecats to cell phone zombies and, yes, evil sentient killer machines. We dont have a grand unifying theory of why these movies are so bad when others have been so good, but maybe there are some clues hidden within all the blood and guts and clown makeup. The Worst Stephen King Movies Ever MadeThere are some great Stephen King movies out there, but there are some truly terrible ones, too.Gallery Credit: Emma StefanskyREAD MORE: The Most Underrated Horror Movies of the 21st CenturyGet our free mobile appThe Scariest Kids Movies in HistoryFiled Under: Carrie, Firestarter, Stephen King, The Monkey, The Shining

All offer access to the biggest streaming apps, but there are differences among them. Some offer a clean interface and easy access to what you want, while others can be cluttered and riddled with ads and promotions. At CNET, as part of our rigorous side-by-side TV testing regimen, we've reviewed all the major smart TV systems including Roku, Google TV and Amazon Fire TV. See now What's the best Roku TV overall? The best Roku TV tested and reviewed by CNET is the Roku Pro Series TV. It's at the top of the company's lineup, offers decent image quality for the money, and is particularly suited to gaming and of course that Roku TV OS. While Roku makes TVs now, it also continues to sell sets made by partner manufacturers, like TCL, Hisense, Onn, Pioneer and Sharp. These televisions generally tend to sit at the low end of the price and picture quality spectrum. And you won't find a Roku-branded top-of-the-line OLED TVyet, despite Roku offering manufacturers a blueprint on how to make one. Of course, you can turn any TV into a Roku by adding a Roku streaming device, which typically costs less than $50. You'll be sacrificing an HDMI port (and possibly a USB port, too). But in return, you can consider other TVs with higher-end options such asfull-array local dimming, OLED screens, a120Hz refresh rate,4K UHD resolution, high dynamic range, a plethora ofHDMIports, and evengaming-centric features-- including variable refresh rate -- to go with aPlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.But if you're convinced you want an all-in-one Roku TV, here are the best you can get.Best Roku TVs of 2025 Photo Gallery 1/1 $589 at Best Buy Pros Great interface Thoughtful usability features Low input lag for gaming Cons Not the best value Competitors offer a punchier picture Full Review Read full review $589 at Best Buy Roku's new flagship TV offers decent image quality thanks tomini-LED tech, which informs afull-array local dimmingbacklight. It includes some gaming-friendly features, such as 4K/120Hz support, and some of the lowest lag scores we've seen in both 1080p and 4K HDR. It has that great Roku TV operating system, and the remote is a voice model that can also help you find it when it disappears. Though you may find better performance at this price, from some TCL and Samsung TVs, for instance, none of them will include the Roku OS on board. If you want the best Roku TV, this is currently it. Competition among TVs in the middle pricing band is heating up, and the Plus Series is the latest entrant in 2023. Unlike the TCL Roku TVs, this one is all Roku, with no other brands on board. It adds a couple of step-up extras, including QLED and full-array local dimming, which help deliver a better picture than the TCL 4-Series, for example. It's not as impressive as the Vizio MQX, though, since it lacks 120Hz for gaming and has worse picture quality overall. If you value those extras, then the Vizio is worth saving for, but if not the Roku Plus Series is a very good value. This is the first TV Roku has produced under its own brand, as opposed to partnering with a brand like TCL, Sharp, Pioneer or Hisense. The company also released a version with fewer features and no local dimming, called theRoku Select Series. The price shown below is for the 55-inch size.

  • TikTok Ban Fueled by Israel, Not China
    www.kenklippenstein.com
It all started with Hamas October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and concerns about anti-Semitic content on the social media platform TikTok. It all ended with a classified briefing and a foolish attempt, still alive, to ban the social media platform. The companys ownership by China never was the driving force in Congress eventually taking action. This week at the Munich Security Conference, Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the intelligence committee, played Ive got a secret. Its a game national security officialdom loves to play, slyly claiming authority if they could only tell you what they know.It is in that vein that Warner spilled the beans on what he called the real story behind the law that could still ban TikTok.I want to see if you're going to tell the real story, a grinning Warner said, addressing former congressman Mike Gallagher, and now a Palantir executive who, along with Warner, first introduced the bill that claimed that TikTok was a national security threat, a claim still relevant given the apps uncertain future.Gallagher described how the national security bill was dead until Hamas attack on Israel, which brought the legislation back to life. As Gallagher said:So we had a bipartisan consensus. We had the executive branch, but the bill was still dead until October 7th. And people started to see a bunch of anti-Semitic content on the platform and our bill had legs again. The account by Gallagher makes explicit something there have been hints of for some time. Israeli officials and lobbyists told everyone that would listen in Washington that TikToks algorithm fueled American youth opposition to the Israel-Hamas war.As I reported last year, a State Department source told me that a high-ranking Israeli diplomat was ranting about the supposed malign role of some Chinese-manufactured algorithm, purposely dismissive of the reality that the college protesters outrage was sincere, that it was about Israels military conduct in Gaza and not some foreign malign influence campaign hatched in Beijing.NPR at about the same time reported on a memo written by Israel Foreign Ministry Deputy Director General Emmanuel Nahshon, which blamed TikToks algorithm for turning young people against Israel. Ive obtained a similar memo detailing the incident. The memo, produced by the State Department for its Near East Affairs diplomats, describes how Nahshon, the Israeli official, blamed youth opposition to the war in Gaza on the TikTok algorithm. Nahshon also ignored warnings from the Biden administrations Assistant Secretary for Global Public Affairs, Bill Russo, oblivious to the possibility generational damage to their reputation they were facing internationally. Quoting from the memo directly: Nahshon disagreed with Russo's assertion that the United States and Israel faced a major credibility problem as a result of the unpopular war on Gaza. The Israelis seemed oblivious to the fact that they are facing major, possibly generational damage to their reputation not just in the region but elsewhere in the world. They made the following three main counterpoints to this argument: Israel's main challenge, according to Nahshon, is "power projection."Young people have turned against Israel in large part because the Tik-Tok algorithm favors pro-Palestinian content.Public opinion polling shows there is a "silent majority" of people who continue to support Israel, especially in Europe and the United States. The "silver lining" of October 7 is that it now allows Israel to see who its real friends are.State Department Memo26.2KB PDF fileDownloadDownloadIsrael and China merged into the Biden administrations campaign against TikTok, and in March of last year, a classified intelligence briefing was provided to Congress on the supposed threat of the social media platform. As Warner describes, the briefing tipped the anti TikTok legislation over the edge, passing through a key committee with a vote of 50-0.And he got it out of a committee that is the most diverse in the House from left to right, 50 to zero after a classified Warner said, before cutting himself off.Despite the vote, some members expressed skepticism about the information contained in the briefing. Not a single thing we heard in todays classified briefing was unique to TikTok, congresswoman Sara Jacobs said at the time. It was things that happen on every single social media platform.Senator Mitt Romney, a supporter of a TikTok ban, linked his support for shutting down the most popular social media platform amongst young Americans to the Palestinian issue. Romney says that TikToks frequency of pro-Palestinian posts is overwhelming compared to other platforms. Romney says:"Some wonder why there was such overwhelming support for us to shut down potentially TikTok or other entities of that nature. If you look at the postings on TikTok and the number of mentions of Palestinians, relative to other social media sites it's overwhelmingly so among TikTok broadcasts."In Munich, former congressman Gallagher also pointed to what he called a huge miscalculation by TikTok in its attempt to head off the ban. When TikTok pushed a notification out to its millions of users, urging them to call members of Congress to oppose the bill, Gallagher said it proved the point that the social media company was brainwashing American youth.Per Gallagher:And then there was a huge miscalculation by TikTok when it became apparent that we were going to pass it out of committee. They forced sort of a pop up on the app that allowed people to call their members of Congress, and kids were calling into their members of Congress during school hours threatening to commit suicide if TikTok went away. And for those of us who were concerned about the use of this platform for propaganda purposes or brainwashing, it sort of proved the point in the moment. In January, right after the TikTok ban took effect, a 19 year old Wisconsin man set fire to the office of a congressman who voted for the legislation. Theres little doubt that young people have an affinity for the app, perhaps even an unhealthy one. What there isnt evidence for is that any of this is being directed by the Chinese government. As Ive reported, the U.S. intelligence communitys concerns about the national security threat of Chinas ownership of TikTok are entirely hypothetical. So it was the threat of espionage, the threat of propaganda, the good work of Senator Warner, and a few other players that all conspired, Gallagher said this week.So the real story is pretty simple. Congress chose to take action essentially to suppress speech and protect Israel. The Biden administration hid behind China in its justification as to why a ban was essential. The classified briefing still secret did the dirty work. Conspired indeed, as Gallagher said. Theyve got a secret. They always do. And that leaves nothing for the public to push back on, which is the true conspiracy.Help us keep telling the real story by becoming a paid subscriber.Leave a commentShare Edited by William M. Arkin

  • Can sim drivers make the shift to F1? Max Verstappen thinks so
    techcrunch.com
In BriefPosted:4:43 PM PST February 16, 2025Image Credits:Clive Mason / Getty ImagesCan sim drivers make the shift to F1? Max Verstappen thinks soMotorsports have long been a pay-to-play arena, with young drivers spending thousands of dollars just to get started in karting. Four-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen knows this all too well, but he also sees a way to change it through sim racing, a virtual form of car racing that closely replicates real-world racing. Its maybe less crazy than it sounds. The sport has evolved into a serious proving ground for talent, with detailed setups and tire management minus the crushing financial barrier. In fact, Verstappen, a passionate sim racer himself, believes the best virtual drivers deserve a shot in real cars. His ultimate vision, he tells The Athletic, is a racing team that transitions elite sim racers into the real world, bypassing the traditional financial roadblocks. While sim drivers lack experience with G-forces, Verstappen thinks training and the right coaching can bridge the gap. He says sim racing has improved his own driving, and vice versa.Everyone always thinks that its just a game and its fun, easy going, Verstappen tells the outlet, but I would say the competition is just as hard, or even harder, to nail to win than in real life.TopicsGaming

  • Elden Ring Nightreign Network Test review Dark Souls meets Fortnite
    metro.co.uk
Elden Ring Nightreign speedrunning a Soulslike (Bandai Namco)There may be no sequel planned but Elden Ring continues via a strange mix of roguelike, battle royale, and traditional Soulslike adventure. You will have noticed that, despite fan hopes to the contrary, FromSoftware did not announce a remaster or remake of Bloodborne at the recent PlayStation State of Play. The creators of Dark Souls have said theyre working on multiple titles at the moment, but the only one we know about is Nightreign: a multiplayer-focused spin-off that were willing to bet started off as DLC but is now being sold as a mid-budget standalone game.Surprisingly, there are said to be no plans for Elden Ring 2, despite the originals huge success, which means that Nightreign may end up being the last trip to the Lands Between. Or perhaps there will be other spin-offs, as this does seem a strange way to end things: turning the original game into a co-op roguelike, complete with randomly generated maps and a battle royale style time limit. From has never described the game as a roguelike theyre not exactly famed for unambiguous descriptions of anything but that is essentially what this is. As youd expect, the combat is the same but with a mixture of new and old enemies, and plenty of new weapons and items. The role-playing elements are necessarily truncated by the nature of the experience but theres at least an echo of everything that made the original great. This weekends Network Test was not an easy thing to take advantage of and it didnt work at all at first. It was never intended to be live for the whole weekend though, as you had to tune in for specific, three hour long sessions each day. Given the technical problems, From did extend their initial plans but, unhelpfully, the final session for the UK took place between 3am and 6am on Monday morning.Nightreign does not take place across the whole of the Lands Between but only a procedurally generated version of Limgrave (the opening area of the main game), referred to as Limveld. You can see parts of the original map being reused and reshuffled but there are also plenty of new landscape and building elements, to help increase the variety. You can play the game on your own, but there are no AI companions, making it clear that its primarily designed for a team of three co-op players, with the goal of completing a three day long mission that ends in a boss battle with one of eight Nightlords. Although there was only one in the network test: Gladius Beast of Night, based on the three-headed dog Cerberus of Greek legend.A more unexpected inspiration is Fortnite, or at least battle royales in general, in that the area available to explore shrinks at the end of the first day, once youve beaten the mini-boss necessary to move forwards. These all seem to be based on existing enemies but with new moves and weak spots.A day lasts around 15 minutes, so if all goes well it doesnt take long to complete a playthrough. Although, of course, the games high difficulty ensures things rarely go smoothly. The last day is focused solely on the boss battle, so the best overall tactic is to use the first day to scour the map for weapons and items purposefully taking on harder enemies in the hope of acquiring runes from them.Churches always contain health items, and the mini-bosses new weapons, but the best loot tends to be in dungeons. Entering these is a risk though, if you dont complete them before the timer runs out and you cant get out in time (the map shrinks via a giant wall of flame, so it really is just like a battle royale).Given how short a run is, even if you win, a lot of the role-playing elements have been streamlined and while you do level up this only affects health, focus points, and stamina. However, the most radical change is that you no longer take any fall damage and can now very quickly clamber up cliffs and other edifices that, in the real game, wouldve been impassable. This is how each run starts (Bandai Namco)This is the most obvious sign that the Elden Ring gameplay is being stretched to breaking point, in order to fit a structure it was never designed for. From Demons Souls onwards, all of Froms fantasy games have been designed around slow and careful progress; checking corners, keeping your guard up, and ruminating carefully over stat upgrades is the essence of not just Elden Ring but Dark Souls and all its sister titles. But in Nightreign all those elements are either greatly simplified or removed entirely. You no longer create your own character but choose from eight pre-made ones (although only four were in the network test) which act similarly to character classes, with what is essentially an all-rounder, a tank, a rogue, and a mage.If everyone dies then its game over and all progress is lost, just like an old-fashioned roguelike. However, technically this is a roguelite, as some elements are retained after death, in the form of relics that offer stat or attribute buffs. You can also collect a new in-game currency between runs, which can be used to unlock additional slots to have more than one relic active at once.More TrendingNightreign is a strange game, that almost seems sacrilegious in how it perverts Elden Rings original design in order to make its peculiar concept work. It succeeds, but whether the concept is worth all this effort remains to be seen. We did enjoy the network test, short as it was, but it already felt like the day sections, were youre exploring the open world, are considerably easier than the night ones where youre taking on the bosses. If youre a veteran Elden Ring player then it seems only the dungeons are a real challenge, while the bosses remain as punishing as ever. Well have to see the full game to be sure though and hopefully get an idea of what, if anything, happens after youve beaten all eight Nightlords.Considering a successful run takes less than an hour, some smart alec is no doubt going to beat the whole thing on launch day and its not clear what incentive theres going to be to continue playing after that. Perhaps there doesnt need to be any, considering the price and how long its going to take most people to get that far, but Nightreign seems to tread a thin line between innovative spin-off and gimmicky cash grab.Formats: PlayStation 5 (reviewed), Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and PCPrice: 34.99Publisher: Bandai NamcoDeveloper: FromSoftwareRelease Date: 30th May 2025Age Rating: 16 Gladius Beast of Night is not an easy fight (Bandai Namco)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • Argentine President Javier Milei Faces Impeachment Threat After Backing Crypto Pump and Dump
    gizmodo.com
By AJ Dellinger Published February 16, 2025 | Comments (0) | Argentina President Javier Milei outside of the Holocaust Museum LUIS ROBAYO/AFP via Getty Images Argentinas president Javier Milei promised to juice his nations economy through anarcho-capitalist policies, and hes finally engaged in the most anarcho-capitalist thing of all: endorsing a cryptocurrency without researching it only to have the bottom fall out on it almost immediately, allowing insiders to cash out while retail backers hold the bag. Now, according to Reuters, Mileis opposition is threatening impeachment over the scheme. Oops! Heres what happened: Late Friday night, Milei fired off a tweet lending his support to a cryptocurrency token called $LIBRA. Milei described the coin to his nearly four million followers as a private project dedicated to encouraging the growth of the Argentine economy, claiming that it would be funding small Argentine businesses and ventures. In under one hour from Mileis tweet, $LIBRA skyrocketed by 2,000%, per CoinDesk, and reached a market capitalization of nearly $4.5 billion. And then the bottom fell out. As the coin reached its peak trading volume, insiders started to sell off, cashing out the coins that they held before Milei served as their useful idiot. An analysis from BubbleMaps warned that 82% of the token was held by a single cluster, suggesting that the creators and whoever else they looped in on the project were just waiting to get enough dupes on board to jump ship. And jump ship they did. As Mileis followers poured in, the insiders got out. In about five hours, nearly $4.5 billion of market cap was wiped out. Financial analysis site The Kobeissi Letter described it as one of the fastest and largest destructions of wealth in retail trading history. Around the same time the collapse was happening, Milei was trying to distance himself from the whole thing. He deleted the original tweet about five hours after posting it, per the New York Timeswhich would have been right around when the coin value was imploding. He followed that up with another tweet making clear that he had no idea what he was throwing his support behind in the first place.A few hours ago I published a tweet, like so many other countless times, supporting a supposed private venture to which I obviously have no connection, he wrote. I was not familiar with the details of the project and after having internalized myself I decided not to continue disseminating it (that is why I deleted the tweet). He concluded the post by stating, To the filthy rats of the political caste who want to take advantage of this situation to do harm, I want to say that every day they confirm how lowly politicians are, and increase our conviction to kick their asses out. Which uhwhat are you in this scenario, my guy? You are quite literally the elected official who, without any due diligence, encouraged people to pour their money into a project that was seemingly designed to rug pull. The website for the project was literally created the day of launch. Its not like this required significant research to determine it was shady.Mileis opposition at least seems to believe he holds more responsibility than hes willing to take on, and is apparently weighing an attempt to impeach the president. This scandal, which embarrasses us on an international scale, requires us to launch an impeachment request against the president, opposition lawmaker Leandro Santoro said, per Reuters. Milei has not exactly endured himself to Argentinians since taking office in 2023. Elected as an outsider promising to get the nation back on track through extreme measures was it faced staggering inflation, his policies have plunged more than half the population into poverty. Earlier this month, he was the subject of mass protests over his ongoing railing against wokeism. Sounds familiar, yeah? Might as well chalk the crypto collapse up to just one more page out of the Donald Trump playbook that Milei is pulling from.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By AJ Dellinger Published February 11, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published January 31, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 29, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published January 24, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published January 23, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 22, 2025
