Southwest Airlines has announced that it will lay off 15% of its employees in an effort to reduce costs and maximize its efficiencies. Heres what you need to know about Southwests layoffs and how employees and fliers will be impacted.Southwest will cut 1,750 jobsOn Monday, Southwest president and CEO Bob Jordan published a memo announcing that the popular low-cost airline will reduce its workforce by 1,750 positions, which the company says equates to about 15% of its total employees.Jordan said the move was part of its previously announced transformational plan. That plan aims to accomplish three main things, according to Jordan: boost revenuesminimize costs and maximize efficienciesget the most from its investmentsJordan says the layoffs will help with the cost minimization and efficiency maximization priorities.We must ensure we fund the right work, reduce duplicative efforts, and have a lean organizational structure that drives clarity, pace, and urgency, Jordan said in the memo. Improving how we work together and how we get work done has a tremendous impact on our efficiency as a Company and how we deliver against our plan.Jordan says that the 1,750 people being laid off will not see their positions go until the end of April. However, he also noted that most employees who will be let go will not continue working until then, though they still will be paid.Southwest says that it expects the layoffs to save the company approximately $210 million in 2025 and approximately $300 million in 2026. However, it does note that the layoffs mean Southwest will incur a one-time charge of between $60 million and $80 million in the first quarter of 2025, which is due to severance payments and other post-employment benefits.Are pilots being laid off?If youre a regular flier of Southwest, youre probably wondering how customers will be impacted by the layoffsparticularly whether the airline is letting go of pilots, which could affect trips and their frequency.But Jordan says the layoffs are focused almost entirely on Corporate and Leadership positions. In other words, most operations staff, which includes pilots and flight attendants, will not be affected.Southwest says the position affected will also include senior leadership and directors. The airline also confirmed that 11 senior leadership positions from vice president and above will also be eliminated.LUV stock price risesWhile the news of the layoffs is devastating to those losing their jobs, investors seem to see things in a more positive light. As of the time of this writing, Southwest stock (NYSE: LUV) is up over 2% in premarket trading.Investors generally view layoffs as favorable, as job cuts are usually one of the fastest ways to cut expenses and increase a companys bottom line.However, though LUV stock is currently trading up after the news of the layoffs was announced yesterday, Southwests stock price is still down year-to-date. Since the start of the new year, LUV shares have fallen nearly 10% as of Fridays close. (Markets were closed yesterday for Presidents Day.) Over the past year, LUV shares are down just over 10%. Looking back further, LUV shares have fallen over 47% during the past five years.Southwest began operations 53 years ago. The company says it currently employs 72,000 full-time-equivalent workers.

Motion trackers concealed within the frame read the user's motions, allowing them to play the games using gestures.For me it's a bridge too far, but in creating these pieces, Breakfast is trying to make a statement about how videogames have gone from humble curiosities to generating billions of dollars in revenue. To that end, these pieces are apparently connected to the internet and track the stock market in real time; when the market goes up, the difficulty level of the games is increased. "The higher the value, the faster and more challenging the gameplay," the firm explains. These are being released as limited edition art pieces, with just 8 units made for each of the three games.

Is it ergonomic? No. Its a forest. How is it going to be ergonomic? Magic? Magic is surprisingly un-ergonomic. There isnt even a power outlet. Thank god for the M-series processors low power consumption.There is Wi-Fi, though, because the centaurs set up an open network for their late-night MMORPG sessions. They are loud and anger the nymphs, who have to be up early to dance in the glade. Its a whole thing.But lets return to the lone Macalope. Hes trying to think of what to write for this weeks column. Theres going to be an Apple event this week. He could write about that. But its probably just the new iPhone SE, maybe with a new name. Nice, but its not exactly huge news.He could write about Apple Intelligence and the companys rumored struggles getting Siri to be smarter. But theres only so many times you can write about AI without your head exploding.The thing is, he knows what he should write about, he just doesnt want to.The Macalope doesnt want to write about politics. These days, he doesnt even want to think about politics. Have you seen politics? Ugh. Blech. It was never good on a good day. But nowAnd writing about politics on a technology website is the very definition of a Kobayashi Maru. Except without the Klingons. And spaceships. So, not the very definition, but you know what the Macalope means.People will yell Stay in your lane, mythical beast! Just shut up and be funny about Apple! First of all, thats an oxymoron. Unless the Macalope is supposed to do a funny interpretive dance about Apple and he wouldnt even know where to start with something like that. Julliard? Could he even get in at his age? Second, though, believe the Macalope when he says he would love to just be funny about Apple. But its getting harder and harder to do.IDGAnd the Macalope isnt the one who started it. Apple was conspicuously non-political for years, not having its own political action committee while almost all of its U.S.-based competitors did. Okay, sure, it hired a few famous former members of Democratic administrations. But it also took on the Department of Justice during a Democratic administration over privacy concerns.The first thing that drew attention to Apples new game was in January when Tim Cook made an unprecedented $1 million donation to the incoming administrations inaugural fund. The Macalope says unprecedented because hed never done it before. All of a sudden hes really into the transition of power. Sure, Tim.Now, Apple has decided to resume advertising on the platform formerly known as Twitter. Apple has apparently delayed what isarguably its most important Apple Intelligence feature, contextual intelligence, by at least another month. Its the latest chapter in what history will remember as the companys most painfully slow, yet strategically significant, introduction yet.Bloomberg says Apple has hit a variety of obstacles in developing these tools, with the smart features the company wants to introduce not working consistently.The company is attempting to build on-screen awareness so Siri can act with the content you are seeing it might save a message address or even run a series of nested commands such as pulling out a half remembered article from those you read the day before to send to a friend.Apple has one example in which the intelligence extends to person recognition, so Siri might be able to tell you when your moms flight is landing, based on an old email containing her flight number and recognition of your relationship.These are all sophisticated features, but ensuring they work consistently is essential. You dont want families waiting forlornly for the wrong flight, or mom waiting for a ride that never arrives. Unlike AI-generated news headlines, these tools reallyneed to workbefore they ship.And word is, they dont, at least not yet.Hey Siri, whats that paperclip in Windows called?The inevitability of WWDCThe update had been expected to show its face in April with iOS 18.4. Now it wont appear until one month before WWDC 2025, in iOS 18.5 in May. Thats almost one full year since those features were first discussed at WWDC and shows the extent to which Apple has been forced to play for time in this deployment. It has managed to make that time, but the delay cant be a good thing for the company, given it should also be pouring resources into improvements across all its operating systems as it prepares for its annual developer conference in June.It begs questions such as just how much of the companys resources are being spent on AI, and what, if any, additional Apple Intelligence tools it will be in position to announce this year.One thing we do know is that Apple must announce something at WWDC. Developers will want to know the company is moving forward on AI. That means that merely reprising the features the company managed to ship slowly across the last 12 months wont do. Nor will pointing enthusiastically at the new support for additional languages Apple isexpected to introduce.To maintain relevance amid the clamor about Deep Seek or Open AI, Apple needs to justify what CEO Tim Cook promised in late 2024,when he said: Were pouring all of ourselves in here, and we work on things that are years in the making.Betting the bankApple understands this.Despite shuttering itsApple Car project, the company spentmore on research and developmentin its just-past quarter than it did a year ago. ($8.2 billion versus $7.6 billion). R&D spending goes up most every year at the company and you can bet your bottom dollar (in comparison to Apples near infinite ones) that AI is part of that spending plan.Throwing money at problems doesnt always yield results, however.You need resource allocation and tight control to ensure all the different research teams are working effectively together. This has plainly been a challenge at Apple, given the companyrecently put one of its best, Kim Vorrath, in charge of getting Apple Intelligence to ship on time. Vorrath is working with John Giannandrea, Apples senior vice president for machine learning and AI, whose team was reportedly sidelined for access to developer resources until early 2023, according to an earlierWall Street Journal report. This is no longer true.Facing the challengeWhile Giannandreas team builds on the AI-driven tools Apple already has in place, the challenges faced by his group mean they must not only deliver AI in an Apple way, but do so in a way that visibly competes with the larger pure AI companies its rivals are already partnering with.With so much at stake, it is perhaps better to delay rather than ship anything that does not work. But peoples patience with such delays will not be infinite and with Open AI still threatening to introduce its own device designed by iPod designerJony Ive, Apples execs surely feel a degree of performance anxiety as they struggle to be the real artists they are reputed to be.Real artists, as Steve Jobs once said,are the people who ship.You can follow me on social media!
