• Chase will start blocking Zelle payments over social media
    www.theverge.com
Chase Bank is going to make it harder to use Zelle for transactions stemming from social media. In an update to its policy on Zelle, Chase says it may decline or block payments related to purchases from social media marketplaces or messaging apps, as spotted earlier by Bleeping Computer. The new policy, which goes into effect on March 23rd, 2025, says its supposed to help prevent scams:To help protect you from fraud and scams, the Zelle Service should be used for payments between friends, family, and others you trust and should not be used to pay for goods from recipients with whom you are not familiar If you are sending a Zelle payment from your Chase account that is identified as originating from contact through social media, we may, in our discretion delay, decline or block that payment.RelatedThe company also says it may request more information when you add a payment recipient to Zelle, including the purpose of your payment, how you contact this person, and other details we deem appropriate to assess whether your payment has elevated fraud or scam risk, or is an illegal, ineligible or improper payment. This change follows a lawsuit filed in December by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which accuses Zelle and three banks that own it (Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America) of failing to protect consumers from widespread fraud. At the same time, the CFPB is losing information from its website and social media channels along with employees as the Trump administration and Elon Musk-directed Department of Government Efficiency make cuts.A Chase webpage says 50 percent of scams reported in the second half of 2024 came from social media, like this one reported by Toms Hardware, where a scammer attempts to obtain a sellers Zelle account details by sending a fake payment through a phishing link. It adds that Zelle doesnt offer purchase protection, meaning its highly unlikely youll get your money back if its a scam. If Chase suspects you may be trying to use Zelle over social media, the company may block or delay the payment while it verifies your identity and the person sending or receiving money. The Verge reached out to Zelle with a request for comment but didnt immediately hear back.See More:

  • NESFab Programming Language
    gamefromscratch.com
NESFab is a new programming language for a very old platform, the Nintendo Entertainment System. It provides a C-like programming language but offers closer to assembly level performance. In fact NESFab claims to be the fast compiled programming language for the NES hardware (including the 6502 processor). NESFab is an open-source GPL 3 based project.Strengths and weaknesses of NESFab from their documentation:NESFab is a statically-typed, procedural programming language for creating NES games. Designed with 8-bit limitations in mind, the language is more ergonomic to use than C, while also producing faster assembly code. Its easy to get started with, and has a useful set of libraries for making your firstor hundredthNES game.2.1. Strengths of NESFabPerformance is generally superior to C and all other compiled languages.Mapperbanks are handled automatically and scale up without fuss.Multi-byte and fixed-point arithmetic is well supported and simpler than other languages. The compiler is easily configured, without needing complex build systems. Some asset loading is built-in. There are less steps to get your ideas onto the screen.2.2. Weaknesses of NESFabNESFab code is only compatible with the NES. It cannot compile to other systems.Only a select number of cartridgemappersare supported.Although NESFab performance is good, writing assembly by hand can obviously surpass it.NESFab is not as tried-and-true as other languages. • Meet Fino1-8B:A Fine-Tuned Version ofLlama 3.1 8B Instruct Designed to Improve Performance onFinancial Reasoning Tasks
    www.marktechpost.com
Understanding financial information means analyzing numbers, financial terms, and organized data like tables for useful insights. It requires math calculations and knowledge of economic concepts, rules, and relationships between financial terms. Although sophisticated AI models have shown excellent general reasoning ability, their suitability for financial tasks is questionable. Such tasks require more than simple mathematical calculations since they involve interpreting domain-specific vocabulary, recognizing relationships between financial points, and analyzing structured financial data.Generally, reasoning approaches like chain-of-thought fine-tuning and reinforcement learning boost performance on multiple tasks but collapse with financial rationale. They improve logical reasoning but cannot replicate the complexity of economic information, which requires numerical comprehension, knowledge of the field, and data interpretation in an organized way. While large language models are widely used in finance for tasks like sentiment analysis, market prediction, and automated trading, general models are not optimized for financial reasoning. Finance-specific models, such as BloombergGPT and FinGPT, help understand financial terms but still face challenges in reasoning over financial documents and structured data.To solve this, researchers from TheFinAI proposed Fino1, a financial reasoning model based on Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct. Existing models struggled with financial text, tabular data, and equations, showing poor performance in long-context tasks and multi-table reasoning. Simple dataset improvements and general techniques like CoT fine-tuning failed to bring consistent results. This framework employed reinforcement learning and iterative CoT fine-tuning to enhance financial reasoning, logical step refinement, and decision-making accuracy. Logical sequences were built systematically so the model could analyze financial issues step by step, and verification mechanisms tested reliability to determine correct financial conclusions. Two-stage LoRA fine-tuning resolved contradictions in numerical reasoning and equation solving, with the first stage fine-tuning the model to financial principles and the second stage fine-tuning intricate calculations. Organized training on various finance datasets, such as reports and tabular data, enhanced interpretation to provide more accurate financial statements and transaction records analysis.Researchers evaluated language models on financial reasoning tasks and found DeepSeek-R1 performed best (68.93) due to strong XBRLMath results, followed by DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-70B and DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B. GPT-4o performed well but lagged due to lower XBRL-Math scores. General-purpose models like Llama3.3-70B outperformed some reasoning-focused models, showing that general reasoning did not always enhance financial tasks. Researchers found that logical-task fine-tuning struggled with economic data, while mathematical enhancements improved XBRL-Math but hurt FinQA and DM-Simplong accuracy. Scaling model size did not always help, as smaller models sometimes performed better. Expanding pre-training data and refining post-training techniques improved financial reasoning. Fino1-8B, trained with reasoning paths from GPT-4o, outperformed others, proving financial-specific training was effective. These results highlighted the importance of domain-specific training to improve financial understanding and multi-step numerical reasoning. In summary, the new approach improved financial thinking in LLMs. By taking advantage of reasonability paths from GPT-4o on FinQA, Fino1 was 10% better across three financial tests. Although formal mathematical models performed best on numerical tasks such as XBRL-Math, they fell short of expectations in processing financial text and long contexts, with domain adaptation necessary. Despite the model scale and dataset diversity limitations, this framework can act as a baseline for future research. Advancements in dataset expansion, retrieval-augmented methods, and multi-step reasoning can further enhance financial LLMs for real-world applications.Check outTwitterand dont forget to join our75k+ ML SubReddit. • Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Review
    www.ign.com
It may seem like a long leap to make from the R-rated streets of Tokyo's red light district to the yarrr-rated pirate-infested waters of the Hawaiian islands, but Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii has successfully pulled off the switch from bareknuckling to swashbuckling with confidence and considerable flair. This jaunty adventure jettisons the series typical turf war cliches and pulpy plot twists in favour of spinning a streamlined and spirited tale of seafaring and treasure hunting, without sacrificing any of the addictive diversions and slapstick silliness that have long become its hallmarks. As far as spin-offs from the mainline entries go, Pirate Yakuza makes for an absolutely invigorating seachange that left me feeling perkier than a parrot on a pirates shoulder. Essentially a coda to the events of 2024s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Pirate Yakuzas off-the-wall story focuses on loveable series shitstirrer, Goro Majima. It gets straight to it: after awakening on the shores of a secluded island with amnesia, he promptly befriends an enthusiastic young boy and his adorable pet tiger cub, commandeers a pirate ship that for entirely unexplained reasons seems to have sailed in straight out of the 1700s, and sets about on a thrilling quest to find the lost treasure of a legendary sunken Spanish ship. Perhaps as a result of his temporary memory loss, Majima is considerably less manic in Pirate Yakuza than he has been in previous Like a Dragon stories, but hes still every bit as gleefully mischievous. There was never a dull moment between him and his evergrowing gang of goons turned treasure-seeking Goonies as I explored the seas and shores of Pirate Yakuzas vibrant tropical setting. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Review ScreenshotsIts an unpredictable voyage that regularly veers from intense highs to more laidback lows, much like the waves that Majima sails upon. In one moment Id be trapped in a desperate battle against a towering sea creature or an army of pirates of almost Dynasty Warriors-esque proportions, while the next Id be adopting homeless animals off the street to shelter in my personal petting zoo and throwing parties for me hearties whenever morale amongst my crew was on the wane. Pirate Yakuza doesnt just regularly hoist the Jolly Roger, it also lets its freak flag fly in a consistently entertaining fashion from its rousing opening musical number through to the dynamic dance sequence that drops the curtain on its story 25 hours later and it kept me hooked harder than a handshake from, well, Captain Hook.Nautical by NatureWhile 2023s Like a Dragon Gaiden experimented with a fairly superficial secret agent spin on the series template, Pirate Yakuza steers Like a Dragon into some truly uncharted waters. Theres plenty of lively naval combat to be enjoyed aboard Majimas adopted pirate ship, although to be clear, in terms of exploration it doesnt attempt to match the sense of freedom I felt in the Caribbean setting of 2013s Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. Instead, Pirate Yakuzas waters are broken down into a handful of smaller maps to warp between rather than one big open waterworld, and outside of the main Honolulu hub and a stunning ship graveyard turned casino district called Madlantis, many of the smaller islands are constructed out of the same recycled layouts. So over time, the sense of discovery slightly diminished whenever I dropped anchor and saw something a bit too familiar. Pirate Yakuza doesnt just regularly hoist the Jolly Roger, it also lets its freak flag fly.Still, theres enough spectacle and strategic depth to the actual open-water combat that I remained engaged anytime I was at the helm of Majimas ship. In each bilgewater battle you can attack front-on with machine gun fire or perform a boost-based ram into an enemys hull, as well as manouevre alongside a rival to deliver more damaging broadside attacks from your port or starboard cannons. These cannons can be upgraded by harvesting resources found drifting at sea or tucked around Pirate Yakuzas smattering of ports, and although Majimas frigate can be equipped with everything from flamethrowers to freeze guns, I soon set my sights on scraping together enough spare parts to outfit my vessel with powerful lasers to cut crossways through my opponents from ear to buccaneer.I was also regularly recruiting new pirates to my crew in every port I docked in, and it quickly became clear that assigning a crew member to specific roles had measurable impacts on each naval skirmish. Individual members of your pirating posse are ranked in areas like attack, defense, and cannon power, and anytime I placed some underpowered or inexperienced comrades in, say, my boarding party, I was forced to watch my crew go from ragtag to bodybags in quick succession. After some experimentation I eventually got the balance right, and that included determining the right pirate to be my first mate. While some candidates offered increased damage buffs or additional fuel drums to burn with my ships boost, I opted to promote a mechanic into the role because it gave me two extra repair kits per clash. Given I approach naval battles like Dave Chappelle approaches his stand-up sets always on the offensive and typically blazed up by the end it was enormously helpful to have those extra kits to haul my battlescarred hull to glory. Some of the naval combat functions do seem a little superfluous, though. For example, at no point in the story did I feel the need to step away from the helm in order to use Majimas rocket launcher, since the ships artillery usually seemed ample enough, and it was also rare that I was compelled to manually put out fires on deck or thaw out ice that was blocking my cannons. That did change, however, after I beat the story and returned to complete the 30-odd escalating battles in Madlantis pirate coliseum, as surviving its toughest encounters demanded the considered use of every ability at my disposal. That finally made for some welcome optional challenges outside of the main story path, but I wished theyd been in play earlier in the campaign. Captain HookshotOf course, given that this is a Like a Dragon adventure, there are still plenty of opportunities for fisticuffs either ashore or on-deck anytime you board an enemy ship by force. In the default Mad Dog fighting stance, Pirate Yakuza reverts to the familiar brand of combo-based street fighting that was a staple of the series before the main entries shifted to turn-based brawls with 2020s Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Majima can pull off fast and fluid combinations of punches, kicks, and rapid dagger slashes, each attack enhanced by flashy neon movement trails and punctuated by enemies that erupt into fountains of gold coins as though theyre crowds of criminal question blocks from the Mushroom Kingdom. However, Majima feels noticeably more agile than Kazuma Kiryu ever was, with a snappier quickstep to open overbalanced enemies up to counter attack, plus the useful ability to jump and air-dodge out of harms way anytime hes overwhelmed by a surprisingly numerous horde.Even so, once Id unlocked the Sea Dog fighting stance a few hours into my 25-hour tour of Pirate Yakuza, I basically never looked back. While in previous Like a Dragon instalments Ive relished the freedom to switch between stances to best counter each enemy type or situation, Sea Dog is basically a one-size-fits-brawl fighting style that feels adaptive enough to suit any given showdown. This pirating pose allows Majima to cut loose with a pair of cutlasses, either hurling them like bladed boomerangs or performing a brutal ballet of spinning slashes to cut through enemies in clusters. It equips him with a handy hookshot that allows him to zip directly to a targeted enemy like some sort of seafaring Spider-Man, which is extremely useful for picking off the more heavily-armed goons that tend to snipe you from the far edges of each battle arena. If thats not enough, it also gives Majima a flintlock pistol of his own, and after investing in the skill tree to increase its power and widen its radius, I was able to use it to wipe out more pirates than dysentery at the charged-up press of a button. Sea Dog is basically a one-size-fits-brawl fighting style that feels adaptive enough to suit any given showdown. So well-rounded and entertaining to use was the Sea Dog style, in fact, that the only time I ever felt the need to switch back to Mad Dog was in order to unleash Majimas slightly overpowered Doppelganger attack. Available after youve chained together enough successful attacks to fill up a special meter, this devastating ability conjures up twin Majima clones that swarm enemies and chew through their health bars for a short time like a pair of piranhas, and I was happy to have it in my back pocket for whenever I came up against one of the more brutish boss encounters. Although I think Infinite Wealths hybrid turn-based combat has quite rightfully become the standard for the Like a Dragon series, Pirate Yakuzas flashy fighting remained engaging from the first sword slash through to the final throat cut, and I found it to be a substantial step up from the gadget-heavy grappling of Like a Dragon Gaiden.Pleasure IslandAlthough Pirate Yakuzas Honolulu setting is more or less the same sundrenched sprawl that featured in Infinite Wealth, there are enough new secrets and distractions that made it rewarding to explore a second time around. Outside of combat, Majimas hookshot can be employed to zip him up to anchor points on certain buildings, meaning that treasure chests full of alternate character costumes and other goodies are tucked away on hotel awnings and various other elevated spots all over the island. There are also countless bounty targets to track down and beat up for beefy cash bonuses, and games for the safehouse Master System to seek out. Although, I must admit that I feel like its about time that developer Ryu Ga Gotoku moved on to an in-game Mega Drive (or Genesis for US fans), or at the very least a Game Gear. After collecting mostly the same set of 8-bit cartridges in Lost Judgment, Like a Dragon Gaiden, and now Pirate Yakuza, I feel like Ive well and truly mastered the Master System at this point. PlayBut of course, theres still more: in addition to the fiend-photographing Sicko Snap and the infectiously giddy Super Crazy Delivery minigames that return from Infinite Wealth, Pirate Yakuza brings back Dragon Kart from Yakuza: Like a Dragon, only this time in addition to its riotous racing circuits theyve bolted on an arena-based battle mode which made for some intense, four-wheeled firefights. Meanwhile, the series standard-issue batting cage minigame has been revitalised by swapping baseballs for cannonballs, and I had a great time knocking destructive dingers into descending stacks of explosive barrels. I was also delighted with almost every substory I completed in Majimas adventure. Some were utterly wholesome, like the time I agreed to bring an aging businessman aboard my ship in order to live out his boyhood fantasies of becoming a pirate. Others were funny pisstakes of online culture, like when Majima was recruited to become a Virtua Fighter 3 streamer and I had to choose the liveliest possible reactions for him in order to prevent the comments section from turning too hostile. Others still were completely bonkers, like the substory that suddenly spins out into a live-action episode of a dating show inspired by The Bachelor, as the ships cook Masaru tried to woo five different potential dates with hilariously awkward results. Tristan Ogilvie's Favourite Pirate GamesNot to be confused with pirated games.See AllTheres even a supersized substory that sees Majima and his ever expanding crew hunt down the dread pirate Zeus and his intimidating Devil Flags fleet. This chunky optional quest opened up additional maps to navigate, including an archipelago of volcanic islands and even an ice realm, each overloaded with increasingly powerful naval vessels to face off against and pirate headquarters to plunder. Not only is undertaking this journey worthwhile purely for harvesting the doubloons required to upgrade Majimas ship with decked out drip including a carved Kazuma Kiryu figurehead for its bow but its also the only way to track down all four fabled instruments of the Dark Gods. These cursed instruments can be charged up during on-shore skirmishes and unleashed to spectacularly turn the tides of a battle, with a violin that brings the violence by summoning a horde of spectral land sharks to turn enemy packs into fleshy snacks, or an electric guitar that can be energetically shredded while a towering ape stomps into the fray and chimp-slaps your opponents straight into Davy Jones locker. These are some of the most powerful attacks in Pirate Yakuza, so its a little odd that theyre locked away in an entirely optional substory thats so easy to overlook.

  • Christopher Nolans The Odyssey First Look Is More Classic Hollywood Than Homer
    www.denofgeek.com
Tell me, O Muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he made movies about Batman and Oppie. Thats been the cry of every movie fan since Christopher Nolan announced that his next movie would be an adaptation of epic Homeric poem The Odyssey. Surprisingly, we dont have to rely on secrets of the Muses to learn about one aspect of Nolans approach. The first image of star Matt Damon as hero Odysseus has hit the internet, giving us our first indication of Nolans thought process. And must of us are reacting by nodding and saying, Yep, thats about what I expected Matt Damon as a Greek hero to look like. One social media user, however, disagreed. A user with the handle Big Serge pointed out that The Iliad describes Odysseuss headgear as a kino leather helmet adorned with boar tusks, not the more broom-top helmet seen in the picture. That observation underscores an important aspect of Nolans take on The Odyssey. Unlike, say, Robert Eggerss painstaking period recreations in The Witch and The Northman, Nolan does not seem to put historical accuracy first. Rather, hes going for classic Hollywood homage, a tribute to the movies of his youth. While the costume Damon sports doesnt look much like Kirk Douglass duds in the 1954 movie Ulysses (using the characters Roman name) or by Bekim Fehmiu in the 1968 TV miniseries, it does recall depictions of Ancient Greece in productions such as The 300 Spartans (1962) and Jason and the Argonauts (1963).

  • Apples M5 chip release will remedy an unpopular M4 decision, per report
    9to5mac.com
Apples M4 rollout isnt yet complete, with the M4 MacBook Air expected to launch soon. But the M5 chip is expected to debut this fall, and when it does, Apple will reportedly remedy an unpopular M4 decision.Over the weekend, Mark Gurman reported on the first devices expected to feature Apples M5 chip. And in doing so, he identified a key change from the companys M4 approach. He writes at Bloomberg:the M5 chip transition will begin alongside new MacBook Pro models in the fall. Then we should get an M5 iPad Pro by the first half of 2026. In other words, the M4 and M5 chip transitions will see their release orders flipped, with the M5 coming to the Mac before the iPad Pro.Last May, Apple surprised many of us by debuting its brand new M4 chip not in a Mac, but in the new iPad Pro.It then took a full six months before a single Mac gained the new chip. While iPad Pro users like myself enjoyed getting the latest chip first, it was an especially unpopular move for Mac users. In part, no doubt, because of the long wait for the first M4 Macs to arrive in November. But with the M5 line this fall, Apple appears to be reversing course and going back to its former strategy of launching new M-class chips on the Mac. In this case, with the new MacBook Pro.And since the MacBook Pro will be the first M5 device, we should see not only the base M5 chip debut, but also the M5 Pro and M5 Max at the same timejust like what happened with the M3 line in 2023.Did you take issue with Apple giving iPad Pro the M4 first? • X Premium+ subscription doubled, though company is confused about its own pricing
    9to5mac.com
We reported yesterday the launch of the Grok 3 chatbot, which is only available if you have an X Premium+ subscription. That cost $22/month at the time, but thats now been more than doubled to $50/month though X seems a little confused about its own prices X owner Elon Musk claims Grok 3 is the smartest AI on Earth, as competition continues to increase. OpenAI is planning to launch its most powerful model yet, GPT-4.5m within the next few weeks.X Premium+ subscription doubledAccess to the latest Grok model is limited to X Premium+ subscribers, and Musk appears to think they are willing to pay a lot more for it. TechCrunch spotted the immediate price increase.Hours after Elon Musks AI company, xAI released the latest version of its AI model, Grok 3, X has significantly hiked the price for its top Premium+ subscription plan, which gives users access to the latest model, to almost $50 per month []This is the second time X is raising the price for the Premium+ plan in the past couple of months. In December, the company hiked the subscription amount to $22 per month from $16 per month. If we go by any of the listed prices, the new plan will cost Premium+ subscribers more than double what they currently pay.Even then, you wont get access to all of Grok 3s features some of them require a standalone SuperGrok plan.Pricing confusionHowever, the sites Ivan Mehta notes that X seems confused about its own pricing. When this reporter tried to sign up for the Premium+ plan, X showed that it would cost $39.83 per month ($477.95 annually), though the final check-out page said it would cost $395 for a year. Also, while Xs support page says a monthly subscription costs $50, the sign-up page lists a $48.40 per month price, and the check-out page is charging $40 a month. So, er, youll pay more; how much more appears to be something of a lucky dip. Maybe the company should have a smart AI look into it.Photo byMariia ShalabaievaonUnsplashAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • Chinese Hackers Exploit MAVInject.exe to Evade Detection in Targeted Cyber Attacks

Feb 18, 2025Ravie LakshmananCyber Espionage / MalwareThe Chinese state-sponsored threat actor known as Mustang Panda has been observed employing a novel technique to evade detection and maintain control over infected systems. This involves the use of a legitimate Microsoft Windows utility called Microsoft Application Virtualization Injector (MAVInject.exe) to inject the threat actor's malicious payload into an external process, waitfor.exe, whenever ESET antivirus application is detected running, Trend Micro said in a new analysis."The attack involves dropping multiple files, including legitimate executables and malicious components, and deploying a decoy PDF to distract the victim," security researchers Nathaniel Morales and Nick Dai noted."Additionally, Earth Preta utilizes Setup Factory, an installer builder for Windows software, to drop and execute the payload; this enables them to evade detection and maintain persistence in compromised systems."The starting point of the attack sequence is an executable ("IRSetup.exe") that serves as a dropper for several files, including the lure document that's designed to target Thailand-based users. This alludes to the possibility that the attacks may have involved the use of spear-phishing emails to single out victims. The binary then proceeds to execute a legitimate Electronic Arts (EA) application ("OriginLegacyCLI.exe") to sideload a rogue DLL named "EACore.dll" that's a modified version of the TONESHELL backdoor attributed to the hacking crew.Core the malware's function is a check to determine if two processes associated with ESET antivirus applications -- "ekrn.exe" or "egui.exe" -- are running on the compromised host, and if so, execute "waitfor.exe" and then use "MAVInject.exe" in order to run the malware without getting flagged by it."MAVInject.exe, which is capable of proxy execution of malicious code by injecting to a running process as a means of bypassing ESET detection, is then used to inject the malicious code into it," the researchers explained. "It is possible that Earth Preta used MAVInject.exe after testing the execution of their attack on machines that used ESET software."The malware ultimately decrypts the embedded shellcode that allows it to establish connections with a remote server ("www.militarytc[.]com:443") to receive commands for establishing a reverse shell, moving files, and deleting files."Earth Preta's malware, a variant of the TONESHELL backdoor, is sideloaded with a legitimate Electronic Arts application and communicates with a command-and-control server for data exfiltration," the researchers said.Found this article interesting?
