  • 2XKO game director speaks out about the next "much smaller" online play test, a new fuse, and more ahead of February update
    www.vg247.com
Straight Postin it2XKO game director speaks out about the next "much smaller" online play test, a new fuse, and more ahead of February updateThe team has apparently been enjoying the "crazy memes and the hysteria" ahead of the February update.Image credit: Riot Games News by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Feb. 21, 2025 2XKO game director Shaun "unconkable" Rivera has posted a lengthy statement online (first on Reddit, later on X) shutting down speculation and misinformation regarding the game and its upcoming online play test. This includes the fact that the next play test will be "much smaller" than the first Alpha Lab test. The entire statement, which you can read here, kicks off by acknowledging the "crazy memes and hysteria" of the game's official subreddit, before revealing the team were initially planning on running a larger-scale play test next month, with the February update covering this event. However, it looks like plans have changed to a smaller play test instead, while the team builds up infrastructure for a larger influx of players later this year.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Rivera also addressed the Pulse Fuse, as there have been discussions among the community of it going away. This fuse, for those who can't remember, allowed for players to mash a single button and perform a decent combo (while retaining all their usual attacks). This, it seems, has been replaced with an auto-combo setting selectable during character select. Instead, Rivera reveals more about a new fuse: Sidekick. This basically removes the ability for the two playable characters to switch at all, instead providing the point character with more health and providing the second player more of a "support" role. Think of it like Yummi in League of Legends, who is attached to another champion and assists them by throwing out abilities (in 2XKO, assists) that aid in their assault. This information seems to have been suddenly posted in response to leaks that had appeared online earlier this month (we obviously can't link to 'em here), which explains the sudden and largely unexpected post by Rivera here. He doesn't provide a date for the February update, which remains the main topic of speculation in the minds of 2XKO fans.Obviously, this post raises a bunch of questions. The first, and most pressing in my mind, is how much smaller the upcoming play test will be? The first alpha lab proved popular, with flocks of new and experienced fighting game players rushing for access. It also begs the question of why a smaller test? If I may speculate, it could be to gather data on a specific user base, perhaps to better balance the game for a wider net of players. For example, they're adding the Sidekick fuse, right? So maybe they want a smaller test aimed at a control group of 50/50 experienced and totally new testers? It's something I'm personally keen to learn more about. Then there's the decision to build infrastructure for an increased number of future players, which itself is interesting. Perhaps, given the popularity of the first Alpha Lab, the team is anticipating a very significant increase in sign ups for a future test. This on its face makes sense, we saw plenty of players left in the cold last time, and these sorts of slow builds to release tend to gain interest the closer they get to that long-awated 1.0 launch date. However the cookie crumbles, it's February 21 as of writing, which means it shouldn't be too long until we know for certain what the deal is. Still, an interesting peek into what's going on, even if it was sudden. What do you think of this new info? Does Sidekick sound like a cool new addition to you? Let us know below!

  • OpenAI rolls out its AI agent, Operator, in several countries
    techcrunch.com
OpenAI said on Friday that it is rolling out Operator, its so-called AI agent that can perform tasks on behalf of users, for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the U.K., and more countries.OpenAI said Operator will be available in most places where ChatGPT is available, apart from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland.Operator, launched in January in the U.S., is one of several AI agent tools on the market that can be instructed to do things like book tickets, make restaurant reservations, file expense reports, or shop on e-commerce websites. Image Credits:OpenAIThe tool is currently only available to subscribers on the $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan. You can only use it via a dedicated webpage, but the company has said it plans to make Operator available with all ChatGPT clients. Operator runs on a separate browser window (that users can take control of at any time) to complete tasks.Theres ample competition in this space, with companies like Google, Anthropic and Rabbit building agents that can perform similar tasks. However, Googles project is still on a waitlist, Anthropic gives access to its agentic interface through an API, and Rabbits action model is only available to users who own its device.

  • A new 3D printing method to produce ultra-fine fibers at scale
    3dprintingindustry.com
Researchers from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed a novel method to fabricate ultra-fine fibers with diameters as small as 1.5 m, offering a scalable way to replicate biological fibrous structures.Published in Nature Communications, this study also saw contributions from University of Cambridge, Chapman University, and Hongik University researchers. Known as 3D printing by rapid solvent exchange (3DPX), the technique allows for the creation of fibers extending tens of centimeters in length, with potential applications in robotics, medicine, and advanced materials.Unlike conventional fabrication methods, which struggle with flexibility and high aspect ratios, this approach leverages solvent exchange to enable rapid solidification of extruded polymer filaments. This process reaches speeds of 5 mm/s, significantly outpacing traditional meniscus-guided printing. By allowing fibers to solidify almost instantly, capillary-induced breakage is prevented, ensuring the stability of fine structures. In nature, there are many examples of filamentous structures that achieve a diameter of only a few microns, said, Mohammad Tanver Hossain, an engineer at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in a press release. We knew it had to be possible.A spiral structure produced using embedded 3D printing. Image via M. Tanver Hossain.3D printing ultra-fine fibersExperiments showed that 1.5 m fibers could be produced using a 5 m nozzle, with aspect ratios exceeding 3,400. The researchers fine-tuned the support gel rheology and polymer composition to ensure stability, proving that even at this scale, the process remains reliable. The technique also works across a broad range of materials, including thermoplastic elastomers, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They even tested carbon nanotube-polymer nanocomposites, which could be useful for applications in electronics and sensor technology.Beyond individual fibers, the team successfully printed hair-like arrays anchored onto elastomeric substrates, with diameters under 2 m and lengths surpassing 1,500 m. These could prove valuable in tactile sensors, microneedles for drug delivery, and microfluidic devices, taking inspiration from natures own solutions for sensing and adhesion.Scalability was another key focus. A multi-nozzle printing system demonstrated the ability to fabricate multiple structures at once, with a nine-nozzle manifold producing identical prints in parallel. This capability enhances industrial applications, where efficiency and precision are equally important. The team also experimented with coils, spirals, and curved filaments, showing that the printing speed and the gels yield stress have a direct impact on how well a filament holds its shape. At higher yield stress values, the gel provided better mechanical support, preventing filaments from shifting during extrusion. Slower printing speeds allowed for more controlled deposition, ensuring that fibers adhered closely to the intended trajectory.Compared to existing methods, 3DPX sets a new record for feature size in direct ink writing. Previous embedded 3D printing techniques, such as those using curable silicone elastomers, struggled to get below 8 m, while this approach cuts that down to 1.5 m. Unlike electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing and aerosol jet printing, which tend to be slow and require external supports, 3DPX works faster and allows for freeform, unsupported printing. As with any research, this study also faced its distinct challenges. Handling ultra-high-aspect-ratio fibers after printing remains tricky, and further refinements in material formulations and support gel properties could help improve stability.According to Hossain, this method holds strong potential, as ultra-fine and long fibers could be combined with functional materials to enable replication of nature-inspired fibrous structures.Broader advances in micro-3D printingAway from University of Illinois, other researchers have also tackled challenges in micro-3D printing, exploring different methods to enhance precision and efficiency.Last year, Israeli 3D printer manufacturer Nano Dimension 3D printed a micro-scale medical device to record neuronal activity in mice for a biomedical research project. Partnering with Qubecs CERVO Research Center, Universit Laval, and Bordeaux University, and Institut des Maladies Neurodgnratives (IMN) researchers, the company used its Fabrica Micro 3D printer to achieve the micron-level precision needed for the 2.7 mm-wide brace.Printed using bio-compatible Fabrica Medical M-810 material, the device features 110m-sized holes for electrodes and was fabricated in just one week, significantly reducing the production time from several months. The brace ensured stable electrode placement despite animal movements, allowing researchers to overcome previous limitations in studying dorsal horn neurons in awake mice.Elsewhere, Stanford University researchers developed a high-speed roll-to-roll CLIP (r2rCLIP) 3D printing process capable of producing up to one million microscale particles per day. By integrating continuous liquid interface production (CLIP) with a modular film system, the team replaced the static build plate with a PET film assembly line, automating printing, washing, curing, and removal. This fully automated system enables high-resolution, high-throughput micro-3D printing, with applications in drug delivery, microrobotics, and advanced materials. The research, led by Joseph DeSimones lab, was published in Nature, showcasing its potential for scalable 3D printing of complex microscopic structures.What3D printing trendsshould you watch out for in 2025?How is thefuture of 3D printingshaping up?To stay up to date with the latest 3D printing news, dont forget to subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter or follow us on Twitter, or like our page on Facebook. While youre here, why not subscribe to our Youtube channel? • Airborne Transmission Of Highly Pathogenic Bird Flu
    www.forbes.com
The price of eggs is going up as highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza spreads in the US and continues to pose serious threats to poultry farms worldwide. In just the past thirty days, no fewer than 23.3 million birds have been affected in the US including 102 commercial flocks and 49 backyard flocks. H5N1 is showing itself to be a highly persistent and costly threat.U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Average Price: Eggs, Grade A, Large (Cost per Dozen) in U.S. City ... [+] Average [APU0000708111], retrieved from FRED, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis; https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/APU0000708111, February 20, 2025.Federal Reserve Bank of St. LouisA key question for both farmers and government officials is how the virus gets onto farms in the first place. Some transmission routessuch as direct contact with wild birds, contaminated feed or drinking water, and movement by people through contaminated clothing or equipmentare well-documented, and biosecurity measures are taken at many farms to minimize exposure. Now, new research sheds light on an often-overlooked mechanism: windborne transmission. A recent study presents compelling genetic and meteorological evidence that H5N1 can travel significant distances via wind, challenging the conventional wisdom and highlighting the need to reconsider outbreak mitigation strategies.Screen shot from USDA APHIS website, February 20, 2025. ... [+] https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-detections/commercial-backyard-flocksUSDA Animal Plant Health Inspection ServiceGenetic Evidence for an Epidemiological LinkThe study, conducted after an outbreak of H5N1 in the Czech Republic in February 2024, examined how the virus spread from a duck farm to two chicken farms located approximately 8 km away. Genetic sequencing revealed striking similarities between the virus strains at these farms, with some isolates from the duck farm 100% identical to those found in the chicken farms.Crucially, extensive field investigations ruled out several possible transmission routes. There were no direct interactions between the companies managing the farms, no contaminated feed or water sources, and no major water bodies nearby to facilitate spread via wild birds. The study also ruled out human-associated transmission and even rodent-mediated spread. Given these findings, wind emerged as the most plausible explanation for how the virus traveled between the farms.Meteorological Correlation and Windborne SpreadMeteorological data provided further support for the windborne transmission hypothesis. Between February 4 and 7, prevailing winds blew consistently from the west or southwest (250300 degrees), aligning with the suspected transmission route. Wind speeds averaged around 4 meters per second, with gusts reaching 810 meters per second on February 5. The study determined the optimal period for airborne viral transmission occurred from noon on February 4 to midnight on February 5. At these wind speeds, the virus could have made the distance between the two farms in just 13-22 minutes.Airborne transmission, especially over distances of 8 km, is not typically considered a major route for H5N1 transmission. However, this study challenges that assumption.Map showing duck farm and chicken farms connected by windborne spread of H5N1 avian influenza. Map ... [+] drawn by E. Marty from data reported in a study of an outbreak in the Czech Republic.Eric MartyThe Role of Tunnel Ventilation SystemsOne of the most significant insights from the study is the role of tunnel ventilation systems in facilitating windborne spread. These ventilation systems function like high-volume air samplers, creating negative pressure inside poultry houses that draws in huge quantities of ambient air effectively concentrating whatever particulates may be in that air, in this case infectious virions of H5N1.During the infection period, ventilation rates at the affected chicken farms were exceptionally high. These conditions likely allowed airborne viral particles to accumulate and reach infectious doses. Notably, on the affected chicken farms, outbreaks in chicken houses began near air intake systems. On farm C, the researchers inferred that transmission between chicken houses likely originated in the house with the largest bird population and highest ventilation rate, making it the most plausible first recipient of airborne virus from farm B.Implications for Outbreak MitigationThe findings of this study have significant implications for HPAI outbreak response and biosecurity measures. Conventionally, only dust generated during depopulation efforts has been considered a major risk factor for airborne transmission. However, this study suggests that aerosols produced by infected flocks may be more significant carriers of the virus, as heavier dust particles tend to settle quickly near the outbreak site.To address this new understanding of transmission dynamics, poultry farms and animal health officials should consider whether or not existing biosecurity protocols that focus on direct contact and contamination are adequate. Should airborne mitigation strategies now be considered, too?Additionally, more research is needed to determine if poultry houses with tunnel ventilation systems need additional filtration or air purification technologies to minimize airborne virus spread, especially in places where chicken farms are located close to one another.ConclusionsWhile the study provides strong genetic and meteorological evidence for windborne transmission in this case, there are limitations to air sampling studies. Detecting minute concentrations of viral particles over long distances is challenging. The absence of detection in some studies does not necessarily rule out windborne spread, highlighting the need for continued research into the aerodynamics of viral transmission in poultry settings. In the meantime its worth reconsidering if airborne transmission might account for some of the incursions into otherwise biosecured facilities. This study reshapes our understanding of H5N1 transmission, presenting robust evidence that windborne spread plays a larger role than previously recognized. By highlighting the role of tunnel ventilation systems and optimal wind conditions, the research underscores the need for enhanced airborne transmission control measures.
