• No Camera Control? No problem, your iPhone 15 Pro will soon get Visual Intelligence
    www.macworld.com
MacworldThe shocks just keep on coming. After unveiling the iPhone 16e earlier this week, Apple has now revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro is going to get Visual Intelligence despite not having the Camera Control button normally used to activate it.The clues to this surprise, in fact, were there to be spotted at the 16e launch as that phone is in exactly the same boat. It too does not have a Camera Control button (one of many compromises to keep down the price) yet it will support Visual Intelligence out of the box. If the iPhone 16e can offer this feature, it stands to reason that any handset with the specs to run Apple Intelligence can do likewise. The iPhone 15 Pro obviously did not support Visual Intelligence out of the box, since the feature did not exist at that time. But as reported by John Gruber of Daring Fireball, Visual Intelligence will come to the iPhone 15 Pro in a future software update. Thats almost certain to be iOS 18.4, which is slated for an early April release but hasnt begun beta testing yet.Visual Intelligence is one of the marquee features of Apple Intelligence. Its used to deduce information from visual images: you can point your camera at a pair of headphones, for instance, and Visual Intelligence will do its best to tell you what they are and where you can buy them. It can identify plants and animals, summarize text, create Calendar events from flyers, and get information about businesses from a glance at their frontage. You activate it by pressing and holding the Camera Control at least, thats how you activate it for now. We dont yet know how it will work on the iPhones 16e and 15 Pro.For all the latest information about Apples AI features and when they will roll out in your country, check out our Apple Intelligence megaguide.Apple iPhone 15 ProRead our reviewBest Prices Today:1.049,90 at Smartport | 1.196,00 at Boomstore

  • The Download: dismantling US science leadership, and reproductive care cuts
    www.technologyreview.com
This is todays edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of whats going on in the world of technology. The foundations of Americas prosperity are being dismantledEver since World War II, the US has been the global leader in science and technologyand benefited immensely from it. Research fuels American innovation and the economy in turn. Scientists around the world want to study in the US and collaborate with American scientists to produce more of that research. These international collaborations play a critical role in American soft power and diplomacy. The products Americans can buy, the drugs they have access to, the diseases theyre at risk of catchingare all directly related to the strength of American research and its connections to the worlds scientists. That scientific leadership is now being dismantled, according to more than 10 federal workers who spoke to MIT Technology Review, as the Trump administration slashes personnel, programs, and agencies. And it could lead to long-lasting, perhaps irreparable damage to everything from the quality of health care to the publics access to next-generation technologies. Read the full story.Karen Hao8,000 pregnant women may die in just 90 days because of US aid cutsA barrage of actions by the new Trump administration is hitting reproductive care hard for people around the world. On January 20, his first day in office, Trump ordered a 90-day pause in United States foreign development assistance for such programs to be assessed. By January 24, a stop work memo issued by the State Department brought US-funded aid programs around the world to a halt.Recent estimates suggest that more than 8,000 women will die from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth over the next 90 days if the funding is not reinstated. Where is it?Doctors in the US are generally allowed to practice medicine only where they have a license. Its a situation that has led to a nonsensical norm: A woman with a rare cancer boarding an airplane, at the risk of her chemotherapy-weakened immune system, to see a specialist thousands of miles away, for example, or a baby with a rare disease whos repeatedly shuttled between Arizona and Massachusetts. The use of telehealth has grown since the pandemic, but there are still significant challenges to it being an option for more people. In people, increased exposure to light at night disrupts sleep cycles and has been linked to cancer and cardiovascular disease, while wildlife suffers from interruption to their reproductive patterns, and increased danger.Astronomers, policymakers, and lighting professionals are all working to find ways to reduce light pollution. Many of them advocate installing light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, in outdoor fixtures such as city streetlights, mainly for their ability to direct light to a targeted area. But the high initial investment and durability of modern LEDs mean cities need to get the transition right the first time or potentially face decades of consequences. • First benchmarks for the iPhone 16e reveal performance and RAM size
    appleinsider.com
The first Geekbench listing for what appears to be the iPhone 16e details the difference between it and the iPhone 16, plus confirms the expected amount of RAM.The new iPhone 16eApple would rather talk about what you can do with a device than mention specifications such as the amount of RAM in it. Consequently RAM wasn't mentioned in the launch of the iPhone 16e, but it was presumed that the new iPhone comes with 8GB RAM.That's because at least 8GB RAM is required for Apple Intelligence. There was never any question that the iPhone 16e would include Apple Intelligence, but now the first benchmarks confirm it has 8GB RAM. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

  • 30 Best Architecture and Design Firms in Slovenia
    architizer.com
These annual rankings were last updated on February 21, 2025. Want to see your firm on next years list? Continue reading for more on how you can improve your studios ranking.Albeit small, Slovenia is a captivating country. Bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, it has one of the most diverse architectural cultures of central Europe. It is also home to one of the richest and most diverse natural landscapes of Europe, stretching from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. Joe Plenik, Slovenias most influential modernist architect, along with Ivan Vurvik, and his work regarding the iconic Slovene National Style, became the founders of the Ljubljana School of Architecture. Their unique architectural style amalgamated modernism, the Vienna Secession (a type of Art Nouveau) and past historical ideas and forms, which became the blueprint for the countrys contemporary architectural practice. This young generation of architects is passionately embracing environmentally sustainable designs both within dense urban fabrics as well as natural terrains. Modern structures, such as the Plenik House and the Stoice Stadium, showcase a fusion of contemporary aesthetics and eco-conscious design principles, developing an extraordinary architectural identity and design practice within the country. With so many architecture firms to choose from, its challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in Slovenia based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge. How are these architecture firms ranked? The following ranking has been created according to key statistics that demonstrate each firms level of architectural excellence. The following metrics have been accumulated to establish each architecture firms ranking, in order of priority:The number of A+Awards won (2013 to 2025)The number of A+Awards finalists (2013 to 2025)The number of projects selected as Project of the Day (2009 to 2025)The number of projects selected as Featured Project (2009 to 2025)The number of projects uploaded to Architizer (2009 to 2025)Each of these metrics is explained in more detail at the foot of this article. This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of Slovenia architecture firms throughout the year.Without further ado, here are the 30 best architecture firms in Slovenia:30. O+P>A, Ostanek Prekovi Architecture Janez MaroltIn architecture, our main interest is in how users experience it, and therefore the purpose or reason for an intervention or use of a specific material or detail. Rather than being engaged with forms, we focus on feelings and emotions our buildings create. It is crucial to work on the project from the preliminary sketch to the smallest details, as this is the only way to create a whole experience rather than merely architecture as scenery. Some of O+P>A, Ostanek Prekovi Architectures most prominent projects include:Apartments in Nature: Ortenia, Podetrtek, Slovenia The following statistics helped O+P>A, Ostanek Prekovi Architecture achieve 30th place in the 30 Best Architecture Firms in Slovenia: Featured Projects 1 Total Projects 1 29. presledek. presledek.presledek. is a design collective established by Vid Zabel and Barbara Zunkovic in 2015. The collective understands architecture as an unfolding systematic process that confronts and answers to series of different conditions. These conditions (historical, local, global, contemporary) are the grid and tools to utilize. The perception of singular individual as a user drives collectives interest and it is also for us the main focal point in architecture. Engaging these individuals and forming new social interactions is one of the main concepts in work of the collective. We understand individuals as a means to work as a critical spatial praxis. The dialog within the collective and dialog between different other professionals, where we perceive future user as professional in his own set of rules and conditions of his way of life, is for us the tool in which our concepts are always tested and proven. Some of presledek.s most prominent projects include:black thread on brass profile, Ljubljana, Slovenia The following statistics helped presledek. achieve 29th place in the 30 Best Architecture Firms in Slovenia: Featured Projects 1 Total Projects 1 28. • DOOM: The Dark Ages Levels are id Softwares Largest Spaces Ever, But Still Nice and Contained
    gamingbolt.com
DOOM: The Dark Ages will feature levels much larger than what weve seen from the franchise in the past. In an interview with Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar), game director Hugo Martin has revealed that, despite its massive levels, players wont end up spending two hours on just exploring.Martin spoke about the players moveset in DOOM: The Dark Ages needing plenty of room for tactics like circle-strafing to avoid demon attacks. Because of this, he has described the levels in the upcoming shooter as the largest spaces weve ever made.He spoke about the design philosophy that went into this idea, since players would want a game like DOOM: The Dark Ages to feature fast-paced action without too much downtime. Since the levels are so large, Martin has also said that more completionist players will have plenty of options to spend more time exploring.I dont know that you want to play a single Doom level for two hours, said Martin. You want them to be nice, contained experiences, so around an hour is about the sweet spot. But if youre a completionist, you could certainly extend that.Martin went on to talk about the kind of variety we can expect from DOOM: The Dark Ages, with levels being broken up into various themes. An example he provides has players kick things off in a dungeon before getting thrown into a much more open-ended zone. You might start in a dungeon-like space, then open up in the second half of the level into a more open-ended portion, Martin explained. Were trying to make sure the player feels theres a good amount of variety.Martin, along with executive producer Marty Stratton, has previously referred to DOOM: The Dark Ages as developer id Softwares most ambitious game so far. He also referred to the game being really long, and also featuring optional content.I think its gonna be mostly about secret hunting, said Martin about side content in the game. If you explore all the secrets and youre a completionist, youre certainly gonna make it a much larger experience for yourself.Martin had also spoken about finding the sweet spot for the length of a level in the same Q&A, where he said that about an hour is the ideal amount of time that a level should take for a player. We dont want it to be too long. We dont want a single level to overstay its welcome, he said. I think the sweet spot is right at about an hour, no more. So a lot of honestly what were doing right now is refining it and making sure that we stay in that that space. But it is a massive campaign for sure. While it is set to follow in its predecessors footsteps of providing a brutal first-person shooter campaign, Stratton has previously confirmed that DOOM: The Dark Ages will not feature any multiplayer modes. Stratton said that the decision to forego multiplayer was made right from the beginning of development, allowing the studio more time to focus on other aspects of the game like mini-games and the mech experience.DOOM: The Dark Ages is in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and is coming out on May 15.
