  • The iPhone 16E Announcement: Here Are the Release Date, Price, Features and Specs
    www.cnet.com
A new iPhone in February?! Apple launched the iPhone 16E on its site Wednesday, expanding the iPhone 16 line while also bringing a much-needed overhaul to the 2022iPhone SEwith an all-new name, design, processor and Apple Intelligencefeatures. The iPhone 16E starts at $599 (599, AU$999), which is $170 more than the previous SE's $429 starting price. By contrast, the regular iPhone 16 starts at $799. The price puts the phone towards the higher end of the affordable phone market, between rivals like the $499Google Pixel 8Aand Samsung's Galaxy S24 FE, which starts at $650.At a time when phone-makers have bet their success on implementing custom artificial intelligence features into their devices faster than their rivals, Apple makes it clear that its AI isn't limited to its expensive flagship devices. Powering the iPhone 16E is Apple's A18 chip (the same one found in theiPhone 16 and 16 Plus) so it can run Apple Intelligence. This makes the new Apple phone a rarity: a sub-$600 device that can run the same AI features as its more expensive siblings.Otherwise, the iPhone 16E has a curious value proposition. On paper it seems like an upgrade in nearly every way to the iPhone SE. But it lacks the iPhone SE's main appeals: a low price and a small design. That's not to say that the iPhone 16E isn't worth its $600 starting price, which will no doubt be lower with carrier deals and discounts at launch. But like the old iPhone SE, you have to wonder how long will this phone be relevant for? Watch this: The iPhone 16E Has Arrived 05:08 iPhone 16E release dateThe iPhone 16E will be available to preorder starting Friday, Feb. 21, and will go on sale on Friday, Feb. 28. Apple announced the new phone on Wednesday, Feb. 19 and these release dates follow Apple's usual iPhone release timeline.Preorder at AppleiPhone 16E design The iPhone 16E has an Action button that can trigger a shortcut or start a Visual Intelligence search. AppleThe iPhone 16E's design seems to have been inspired in part by theiPhone 14's aluminum body. The back glass is matte, which should help keep fingerprints from accumulating. In lieu of a mute switch, there's an Action button for activating a shortcut. Since the iPhone 16E lacks a Camera Control button, you'll be able to trigger Visual Intelligence searches with the Action button. The phone has a USB-C port for charging (instead of the iPhone 14's Lightning port). The iPhone 16E marks the end of Apple selling a phone with a home button, which defined the first decade of iPhone designs, dating back to the original one. The iPhone 16E also has a 6.1-inch screen, which means that Apple no longer sells a truly small iPhone option. But the screen, locked at a 60Hz refresh rate, seems like a miss by Apple when the majority of budget Android handsets sport high refresh-rate displays starting at 90Hz. Also, note that the iPhone 16E has a screen notch and lacks a Dynamic Island cutout. Apple's New iPhone 16E in 8 Photos See all photos Oddly the iPhone 16E doesn't come in a color: only black or white.Theoriginal iPhone SElaunched in 2016 and its design was based on theiPhone 5S. SE stood for "special edition," though over the years some of us have referred to it as "small edition." In 2020, Apple launched thesecond-generation iPhone SEwith a design based on theiPhone 8but with the A13 Bionic processor from theiPhone 11 series. In 2022, thethird-generation iPhone SElaunched. Its design was largely similar to the 2020 version but had the A15 Bionic chip from theiPhone 13 series. The iPhone 16E's C1 modem and battery The iPhone 16E supports Apple Intelligence, including fun features like GenMoji. Apple/CNETThe iPhone 16E also has something no other iPhone has: an Apple-designed 5G modem. It's called the C1 chip, and in a launch video on Apple's site, the company claims that it is the "most power-efficient modem ever in an iPhone."The C1 modem supports 5G, but not the fast millimeter-wave 5G found in places like stadiums. It will be interesting testing phone calls and data speeds once we get our hands on the iPhone 16E.Apple also says that the combination of the A18 and C1 chip raises the efficiency and adds up to a longer battery life. There are two ways for a phone-maker to gain customers: lower a phone's price and lengthen its battery life. While Apple didn't give us a lower price than the SE, its battery life might be the best feature. Again, I look forward to testing the 16E.The new iPhone also lacks support for MagSafe charging and accessories. No MagSafe is a bit of a bummer, since that means you can't use magnetic accessories and can only wirelessly charge the phone at a slow 7.5-watt speed. (It can charge wired at 20 watts, though.)iPhone 16E cameras The rear has a single 48-megapixel camera. Apple/CNETThe iPhone 16E sports a single rear camera with a 48-megapixel sensor. While you don't get even an ultrawide option, the main camera has a high enough resolution to do sensor cropping to offer a 2x magnification not quite the same as having a second camera, but possibly close.Around the front is a 12-megapixel camera that supports Face ID and has autofocus for selfies.iPhone 16E final thoughts for nowIn one sense the iPhone 16E carries the mantle of the SE series and how Apple uses parts of old iPhones to create an affordable one. But that name change also represents a symbolic change from Apple having a cheap phone to Apple having an affordable iPhone 16 -- much like how Samsung has its Galaxy FE models. With the name change to iPhone 16E, it will be curious to see how Apple handles upgrades. As opposed to the multiple years between iPhone SE releases, will this be a phone that Apple updates yearly? Will there be an iPhone 17E? All this remains to be seen. I am excited to test the iPhone 16E, so keep an eye out for more coverage on the phone at CNET and our review coming soon.Apple iPhone 16E Specs vs. Apple iPhone 16, iPhone SE (2022), iPhone 15 Apple iPhone 16EApple iPhone 16Apple iPhone SE (2022)Apple iPhone 15 Display size, tech, resolution, refresh rate 6.1-inch OLED display; 2,532x1,170 pixels; 60Hz refresh rate6.1-inch OLED display; 2,556 x 1,179 pixels; 60Hz refresh rate4.7-inch LCD; 1,334 x 750 pixels; 60 Hz refresh rate6.1-inch OLED; 2,556 x 1,179 pixels; 60hz refresh ratePixel density 460ppi460ppi326ppi460ppiDimensions (inches) 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 in.5.81 x 2.82 x 0.31 in.5.45 x 2.65 x 0.29 in2.82 x 5.81 x 0.31 in.Dimensions (millimeters) 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8mm138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm 71.6 x 147.6 x 7.8 mmWeight (grams, ounces) 167g (5.88 oz.)170g (6 oz.)144g (5.09 oz.)171g (6.02 oz.)Mobile software iOS 18iOS 18iOS 15iOS 17Camera 48-megapixel (wide)48-megapixel (wide), 12-megapixel (ultrawide)12-megapixel (wide)48-megapixel (wide), 12-megapixel (ultrawide)Front-facing camera 12-megapixel12-megapixel7-megapixel12-megapixelVideo capture 4K4K4K4KProcessor Apple A18Apple A18Apple A15 BionicApple A16 BionicRAM/storage 128GB, 256GB, 512GB128GB, 256GB, 512GB64GB, 128GB, 256GB128GB, 256GB, 512GBExpandable storage NoneNoneNoneNoneBattery Up to 26 hours video playback, 21 hours streamed video playback, 90 hours of audio playback. 20W wired charging, 7.5W Qi wireless chargingUp to 22 hours video playback; up to 18 hours video playback (streamed). 20W wired charging. • When Is Your Home Most Likely to Be Broken Into?
    www.cnet.com
When looking atsecurity devices and systems for your home, you'll probably start considering all the things you may need in case of an emergency, like fire hazardsor burglary. Knowing what these situations might look like can help you make the right choice, so when it comes to picking a home security system it can be useful to know when burglars act.Knowing when a burglary is most likely to occur can help you plan on when to arm your security system, when to make it look like someone is at home when you're gone, and even help you plan outings. We did the research on when your home is most likely to get broken into, and the answers may surprise you. Here are the top three times thieves are most likely to try a break-in. Read more: What Burglars Look for When Choosing Homes to Break Into1. The middle of the day (especially early afternoon) Thieves have a lot to gain by acting in the middle of the day. Getty ImagesIf you want to know when burglars try to break in to homes, it's a good idea to ask them. KGW8 out of Portland, Oregon, did just that, interviewing more than 80 (caught) burglars to find out how and when they struck. The answer? Most chose the middle of the day, the hours before or after noon: Homeowners are most likely to be gone at work in the day, thieves have great visibility when exploring a new yard or house, and it's easier to pretend to be a lost friend or family member if they get caught in broad daylight.Burglars commonly strike in the early afternoon -- one specifically said between "12:30pm and 2:30 p.m." People who go home for lunch or errands have most likely finished and are back to work during these hours, so there's a greater chance the home will be empty. Others KGW8 interviewed preferred the morning when there's also a guarantee people will be at work. That's similar toother studies that report burglaries are most likely to occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.Curious about what burglars are after? Most hunt down cash, jewelry, medications and items that can easily sell for money -- notably guns and small electronics. Any signs that these items exist in a house may attract watchful thieves. They also reported that security systems and big dogs were big deterrents (although we don't suggest getting a dog for security purposes).2. During the summer (between June and August) Burglars are caught trying to break in far more often in summer than winter. ArloBurglaries are lowest at the height of winter, and highest during the hottest summer months. Since burglary is often a crime of opportunity and requires quickly casing residential neighborhoods, it makes sense that thieves would prefer longer, warmer days. It's also a lot harder to break into homes if there's ice or snow everywhere. That's why research from places like Arizona State University shows that burglaries reach their height in August, and are generally on the rise between June and August when the weather is warmest.3. At midnight Amazon's Blink Wired Floodlight cam in action. BlinkWe know, we just said that burglaries are most common during the warmest, brightest times of day. But not everything is so simple. Research from companies like Vivint has shown that burglaries also spike around midnight, with data showing around 6% of burglaries occurring at 12 a.m.This is an interesting spike because late evening and early morning hours are the least likely times for burglaries. There's just something about midnight that makes some burglars think it's a good time to strike. They may also believe that homeowners are asleep at this time, or that it's easier to hide in the dark. Read more:The Best Tips to Prevent Burglars and Break-InsWith this info now in your brain, you're ready to make great decisions about when to arm your security system or when to make sure your smart lights and security camera floodlights are ready to work. It's also a good idea to make sure your smart locks are locked during these times because -- you guessed it -- most burglars start by simply trying the front door. To become a master of your home security, check out our guide on the best places to put security cameras, common home security myths you should stop believing, and what to do if someone you're living with is the one stealing.

  • Texas Measles Outbreak Nears 100 Cases, Raising Concerns About Undetected Spread
    www.scientificamerican.com
February 21, 20255 min readTexas Measles Outbreak Nears 100 Cases, Raising Concerns About Undetected SpreadLow vaccination rates and undetected infections are driving the measles outbreak in West TexasBy Amy Maxmen & KFF Health News Most unvaccinated people will contract measles if theyre exposed to the airborne virus, which can linger for up to two hours indoors. Those infected can spread the disease before they have symptoms. Anchalee Phanmaha/Getty ImagesSome private schools have shut down because of a rapidly escalating measles outbreak in West Texas. Local health departments are overstretched, pausing other important work as they race to limit the spread of this highly contagious virus.Since the outbreak emerged three weeks ago, the Texas health department has confirmed 90 cases with 16 hospitalizations, as of Feb. 21. Most of those infected are under age 18. Officials suspect that nine additional measles cases reported in New Mexico, across the border from the epicenter of the Texas outbreak in Gaines, are linked to the Texas outbreak. Ongoing investigations seek to confirm that connection.Health officials worry theyre missing cases. Undetected infections bode poorly for communities because doctors and health officials cant contain transmission if they cant identify who is infected. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. I think this is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. An unknown number of parents may not be taking sick children to clinics where they could be tested, said Katherine Wells, the public health director in Lubbock, Texas. If your kids are responding to fever reducers and youre keeping hydrated, some people may keep them at home, she said. Most unvaccinated people will contract measles if theyre exposed to the airborne virus, which can linger for up to two hours indoors. Those infected can spread the disease before they have symptoms. Around 1 in 5 people with measles end up hospitalized, 1 in 10 children develop ear infections that can lead to permanent hearing loss, and about 1 in 1,000 children die from respiratory and neurological conditions.Gaines has a large Mennonite population, which often shuns vaccinations. We respect everyones right to vaccinate or not get vaccinated, said Albert Pilkington, CEO of the Seminole Hospital District, in the heart of the county, in an interview with Texas Standard. Thats just what it means to be an American, right?Local health officials have been trying to persuade the parents of unvaccinated children to protect their kids by bringing them to pop-up clinics offering measles vaccines. Some people who were on the fence, who thought measles wasnt something their kids would see, are recalculating and coming forward for vaccination, Wells said.Local health departments are also operating mobile testing units outside schools in an attempt to detect infections before they spread. Theyre staffing clinics that can provide treatment prophylactically for infants exposed to the virus, who are too young for vaccination. Local health officials are advising day care centers on how to protect young children and babies, and educating school nurses on how to spot signs of the disease.I am putting 75% of my staff on this outbreak, Wells said. Although Lubbock isnt at the center of the outbreak, people infected have sought treatment there. If someone infected was in the [emergency room], we need to identify everyone who was in that ER within two hours of that visit, notify them, and find out if they were vaccinated.Local health departments in rural areas are notoriously underfunded. Wells said the workload has meant pressing pause on other programs, such as one providing substance abuse education.Zach Holbrooks, executive director of the South Plains Public Health District, which includes Gaines, said health officials were following CDC guidelines, as of last year, by advising schools to keep unvaccinated children home for 21 days if they shared a classroom or the cafeteria with someone infected. This means that many parents may need to stay home from work to care for their kids.A lot of private schools have closed down because of a high number of sick children, Holbrooks said. The burden of measles outbreaks multiplies as the disease spreads. Curbing a 2018 outbreak in Washington state with 72 cases cost about $2.3 million, in addition to $76,000 in medical costs, and an estimated $1 million in economic losses due to illness, quarantines, and caregiving.Public health researchers expect such outbreaks to become larger and more common because of scores of laws around the U.S. pending and recently passed that ultimately lower vaccine rates by allowing parents to exempt their children from vaccine requirements at public schools and some private schools.Such policies are coupled with misinformation about childhood vaccination now platformed at the highest levels of government. The new director of the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has erroneously blamed vaccines for autism, pointing to discredited theories shown to be untrue by more than a dozen scientific studies. In Kennedys first week on the job, HHS postponed an important meeting of the CDCs Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, without saying when it would resume. In addition, the CDCs letter template to school principals, advising unvaccinated children to remain home from school for 21 days if theyve been exposed to the measles virus, is no longer on the agencys website. An old version remains posted on its archive. As a rule, at least 95% of people need to be vaccinated against measles for a community to be well protected. That threshold is high enough to protect infants too young for the vaccine, people who cant take the vaccine for medical reasons, and anyone who doesnt mount a strong, lasting immune response to it. Last school year, the number of kindergartners exempted from a vaccine requirement was higher than ever reported before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Gaines, exemptions were far higher than the national average, approaching 20% in 2023-24. Gaines has one of the lowest rates of childhood vaccination in Texas. At a local public school district in the community of Loop, only 46% of kindergarten students have gotten vaccines that protect against measles.Amid an outbreak that displays the toll of measles in under-vaccinated pockets of America, Texas lawmakers have filed about 25 bills in this years legislative session that could limit vaccination further. Lakshaman said the public the majority of whom believe in the benefits of measles vaccination should contact their representatives about the danger of such decisions. Her group and others offer resources to get involved.Weve got children winding up in the hospital, and yet lawmakers whove got their blinders on, she said, referring to pending policies that will erode vaccination rates. Its just mind-blowing.KFF Health News, formerly known as Kaiser Health News (KHN), is a national newsroom that produces in-depth journalism about health issues and is one of the core operating programs at KFF the independent source for health policy research, polling, and journalism.

Oxo packed as many features into this model as possibleand were certainly not complaining. For starters, as a stainless-steel 12-cup brewer, it has the largest brewing capacity of any of the Oxo coffee makers on the market. And since the single-serve option is podless (instead using ground coffee), it cuts down on waste. The SCA-certified coffee maker also uses a rainmaker showerhead to evenly distribute water over the grounds and provide an integrated bloom cycle for, like the 9-cup, the best flavor extraction. In addition, it keeps water at the perfect brew temperature. It has full barista-grade capabilities so you can create the illusion of an $7 latte without having to get yourself to a trendy coffeeshop. Though it might look complicated, its not so much harder to operate than a regular drip coffee maker, in our experience. The intelligent dosing feature automatically calculates and adjusts the amount of ground coffee based on your last grind and tamp, and the precision measurement feature autocorrects your next setup, so you dont have to do the guesswork of manually measuring your grounds.Best-Looking Coffee Machine: Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT Coffee MakerTechnivorm Moccamaster KBGT Coffee MakerSpecsDimensions: 6.7" x 11.5" x 16"Brewing capacity: 40 ouncesDescaling indicator: NoProgrammable: NoUpsides & DownsidesUpsides:Simple one-button operationTwo coffee lids: brew-thru lid and travel lidBrewing stops when carafe is removedThermal carafeSCA-certifiedAccepts both carafe and travel mugDownsides:Water tank is not removableIf you dont like complex coffee makers, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT Coffee Maker is as simple as it gets. • FBI Says Backup NowConfirms Dangerous Attacks Underway
    www.forbes.com
The FBI warns organizations to backup now.Getty ImagesUpdate, Feb. 21, 2025: This story, originally published Feb. 20, now includes expert commentary from a number of security professionals regarding the FBI Ghost ransomware warning.Phishing, social engineering, scams, or whatever label you like to attach to the click here campaigns so beloved of attackers the world over is not the only security threat you need to pay attention to. I mean, that should go without saying, but ignoring other attack methodologies is akin to burying your head in the sand while someone steals your bucket and spade afterward. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has just published a new security advisory warning of one such non-phishing attack being exploited in an ongoing and particularly dangerous ransomware campaign known as Ghost. Heres what you need to know and what the FBI warns you should do with the utmost urgency to stay protected.FBI Issues Critical Ghost Ransomware Security AdvisoryA joint security advisory published Feb. 19 by the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, AA25-050A, has warned organizations around the world of a dangerous ransomware group known as Ghost, which is carrying out ongoing attacks targeting multiple industry sectors across more than 70 countries. The threat actors, working out of China according to the FBI, go by many different names although Ghost appears to be the most common: Cring, Crypt3r, Phantom, Strike, Hello, Wickrme, HsHarada and Rapture, for example. What doesnt vary, however, is the attack methodology. Rather than using phishing techniques, the chosen method for the vast majority of ransomware attacks these days, Ghost prefers to use publicly available code to exploit known security vulnerabilities in software and firmware that their operators have not patched. They do this to gain access to internet-facing servers and ultimately strike with the ransomware payload. The FBI has observed Ghost actors obtaining initial access to networks by exploiting public facing applications that are associated with multiple Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures, the advisory said. Their methodology includes leveraging vulnerabilities in Fortinet FortiOS appliances, servers running Adobe ColdFusion, Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Exchange, commonly referred to as the ProxyShell attack chain.Security Professionals Respond To The FBI Ghost WarningGhost is a dangerous nation-state threat actor which organizations must make efforts to protect against, Juliette Hudson, chief technology officer at CybaVerse, said; The group is actively exploiting known CVEs in ubiquitous tech, highlighting the need for organizations to prioritize patching and remediation efforts. And there lies the rub. "The Ghost ransomware campaign highlights the persistent reality that adversaries exploit known vulnerabilities faster than many organizations can patch them, Darren Guccione, CEO of Keeper Security, warned. Which can only reinforce a critical need for proactive risk management, with security leaders having to ensure that software, firmware and identity systems are continuously updated and hardened against exploitation. Beyond patching, identity security is a persistent weak point in defending against ransomware attacks, Guccione said; Enterprises should implement a privileged access management solution to enforce multi-factor authentication, a zero-trust framework and least-privilege access controls to prevent lateral movement.Joe Silva, CEO at Spektion, agreed that the Ghost ransomware attacks would appear to highlight the fact that threat actors are capitalizing on what you might call patch fatigue by exploiting the gaps left by overwhelmed security teams. This proves legacy vulnerability management practices cant keep up with the exploding number of vulnerabilities that attackers are taking advantage of, Silva warned; Instead, organizations need real-time, contextual insights into how their software behaves within their specific environments by using tools that have a strong signal to noise ratio based on actual risks rather than potential risks that overwhelm security teams.Ghosts credential theft is a stark reminder that hackers are always a step ahead, says Rom Carmel, CEO at Apono. By compromising legitimate accounts, they can infiltrate deeper into environments and target an organization's most sensitive resources, Carmel warned; To reduce the blast radius of account compromises, organizations must not only authenticate access but also enforce precise, rightsized privileges and limit the availability of access to high-value resources. Finally, Tim Mackey, head of software supply chain risk strategy at Black Duck, told me that such attacks on legacy cyber-physical and Internet of Things devices are to be expected and, as such, must be planned for as part of the operational requirements for the device. Attackers know that best practices evolve, Mackey said, and even the most secure device from a decade ago is likely quite vulnerable to a modern-day attack, let alone those that may be mounted in the future. Given that the usable life span of any cyber-physical device is measured in years, and potentially decades, organizations acquiring any such device should work closely with their suppliers to ensure a long-term operations and risk mitigation plan is created that covers not only availability of patches but active sharing of threat scenario data, Mackey concluded.Four Steps To Take Today, According To The FBIThe FBI has advised that all organizations take the following actions, and take them today, to mitigate the risks attached to this most dangerous of ransomware attack campaigns.Maintain regular system backups stored separately from the source systems which cannot be altered or encrypted by potentially compromised network devices.Patch known vulnerabilities by applying timely security updates to operating systems, software, and firmware within a risk-informed timeframe.Segment networks to restrict lateral movement from initial infected devices and other devices in the same organization.Require Phishing-Resistant MFA for access to all privileged accounts and email services accounts.Ghost is a dangerous nation-state threat actor which organisations must take efforts to protect against, Juliette Hudson, chief technology officer at CybaVerse, said. The group is actively exploiting known CVEs in ubiquitous tech, highlighting the need for organisations to prioritise patching and remediation efforts. This advisory from the FBI and CISA highlights that the Ghost ransomware operation is utilising vulnerability exploits to gain access to organisations, which is divergence from the typical ransomware attacks that are executed via social engineering, Simon Phillips, chief technology officer at SecureAck, said. Given that the products Ghost targets are designed for businesses and the CVEs being exploited are so outdated, this highlights an urgent need to reinforce fundamental security practices.

  • Anniversary: HAL Laboratory Is 45 Years Old Today
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Gemma Smith / Nintendo LifeWhip up a last-minute cake and bring out the candles because we have a big birthday on our hands, folks. HAL Laboratory, the company behind Kirby, the OG Smash Bros., EarthBound and another boatload of beauties that we'll get to in just a moment, has turned 45 today.Yep, on 21st February 1980, Mitsuhiro Ikeda founded HAL with the intention of developing games for home computers. Four years later, Nintendo released a little system called the Famicom, ushering in a new partnership that we're still reaping the rewards of to this day.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kWatch on YouTube After one illustrious HAL programmer called Satoru Iwata helped out Nintendo with a handful of NES hits including Pinball, Golf, Balloon Fight, a young upstart by the name of Masahiro Sakurai joined the company and released his debut game: Kirby's Dream Land. This was the introduction to our beloved pink puffball (white at the time, let's not forget) and the birth of the company's figurehead going forward. With almost 40 games and enough merchandise to make even the Minions envious, Kirby has undoubtedly stepped into the role of the studio's most recognisable face, and yet, the last 45 years of releases have been far from a one-note Kirb-fest.We've already mentioned Nintendo's most recognisable brawler and the RPG that time forgot (we remember you, Earthbound), but HAL has been behind a whole host of strange, bold swings that are easy to overlook once you lock eyes with the pink ball at the top of the pyramid.Images: Zion Grassl / Nintendo LifeIn 1999, Pokmon Snap and Pokmon Pinball took the series' usual catchin' and battlin' in a brave new direction, BOXBOY! is one of the most interesting puzzle platformer series of recent years, and who can forget the delightful Part Time UFO? which has been a staple of quick-fix fun ever since it landed on Switch back in 2020.It's easy to forget that HAL isn't Nintendo, but its IPs have become so synonymous with the House of Mario over the years that we struggle to picture them not working hand-in-hand.All in all, it has been quite the 45 in the biz. HAL's general director of the Kirby series (quite the job title, we must admit), Shinya Kumazaki, took to social media to celebrate the anniversary, thanking fans for their continued support and sharing a commemorative painting that was issued to celebrate the studio's 40th:HAL Laboratory. 45th Anniversary!45405#kirby #hallaboratory # #HAL Director_Kumazaki (@director-kumazaki.bsky.social) 2025-02-21T10:03:58.632ZDespite 45 years of big-hitters, however, it has been a quiet couple of months for HAL. The studio's last release came in the shape of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe back in 2023, which, when you consider the usual cadence of Kirby releases, has been quite the wait. We can only assume that it's full-steam ahead on Switch 2 behind closed doors, but the Planet Robobot Switch rumours continue to rumble away nonetheless.Whether the next time we see HAL comes with a new Kirby, a remaster, or that beloved next Earthbound entry that we all so desperately want, we know the studio is never that far away when new Nintendo hardware is on the horizon. So, happy birthday, HAL! • Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says market got it wrong about DeepSeeks impact
    techcrunch.com
Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said the market got it wrong when it comes to DeepSeeks technological advancements and its potential to negatively impact the chipmakers business. Instead, Huang called DeepSeeks R1 open source reasoning model incredibly exciting while speaking with Alex Bouzari, CEO of DataDirect Networks, in a pre-recorded interview that was released on Thursday.I think the market responded to R1, as in, Oh my gosh. AI is finished, Huang told Bouzari. You know, it dropped out of the sky. We dont need to do any computing anymore. Its exactly the opposite. Its [the] complete opposite.Huang said that the release of R1 is inherently good for the AI market and will accelerate the adoption of AI as opposed to this release meaning that the market no longer had a use for compute resources like the ones Nvidia produces. Its making everybody take notice that, okay, there are opportunities to have the models be far more efficient than what we thought was possible, Huang said. And so its expanding, and its accelerating the adoption of AI.He also pointed out that, despite the advancements DeepSeek made in pre-training AI models, post-training will remain important and resource-intensive. Reasoning is a fairly compute-intensive part of it, Huang added.Nvidia declined to provide further commentary.Huangs comments come almost a month after DeepSeek released the open source version of its R1 model which rocked the AI market in general and seemed to disproportionately affect Nvidia. The companys stock price plummeted 16.9% in one market day upon the release of DeepSeeks news.Nvidias stock closed at $142.62 a share on January 24, according to data from Yahoo Finance. The following Monday, January 27, the stock dropped rapidly and closed at $118.52 a share. This event wiped $600 billion off of Nvidias market cap in just three days. The chip companys stock has almost fully recovered since then. On Friday the stock opened at $140 a share, which means the company has been able to almost fully regain that lost value in about a month. Nvidia reports its Q4 earnings on February 26 which will likely address the market reaction more.Meanwhile, DeepSeek announced on Thursday that it plans to open source five code repositories as part of an open source week event next week.

  • Report: OpenAI plans to shift compute needs from Microsoft to SoftBank
    techcrunch.com
In BriefPosted:12:22 PM PST February 21, 2025Image Credits:Bloomberg / Contributor / Getty ImagesReport: OpenAI plans to shift compute needs from Microsoft to SoftBankOpenAI is forecasting a major shift in the next five years around who it gets most of its computing power from, The Information reported on Friday. By 2030, OpenAI expects to get three-quarters of its data center capacity from Stargate, a project thats expected to be heavily financed by SoftBank, one of OpenAIs newest financial backers. That represents a major shift away from Microsoft, OpenAIs biggest shareholder, who fulfills most of the startups power needs today. The change wont happen overnight. OpenAI still plans to increase its spending on Microsoft-owned data centers in the next few years.During that time, OpenAIs overall costs are set to grow dramatically. The Information reports that OpenAI projects to burn $20 billion in cash during 2027, far more than the $5 billion it reportedly burned through in 2024. By 2030, OpenAI reportedly forecasts that its costs around running AI models, also known as inference, will outpace what the startup spends on training AI models.Topics
