  • Marvel Rivals' Cancelation Was Considered Before Release, NetEase Making Changes - Report
    www.gamespot.com
Amidst the abrupt layoffs of some employees who worked Marvel Rivals, it's now reported that the game's cancelation was considered prior to its release, which is a surprising revelation, given it has already surpassed 40 million players.According to Bloomberg, there were discussions about canceling the game. NetEase CEO William Ding reportedly didn't want to pay Disney for using popular Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine, and asked artists to replace them with NetEase's own hero designs. While this change didn't end up happening, the wasted effort reportedly cost millions of dollars. However, a NetEase spokesperson denied this account, explaining that the company and Marvel have had a close relationship since 2017.The sudden layoff of US-based Marvel Rivals developers despite the game's massive success raised questions among fans. "We recently made the difficult decision to adjust Marvel Rivals development team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game," NetEase said in a statement earlier this week. "This resulted in a reduction of a design team based in Seattle that is part of a larger global design function in support of Marvel Rivals."Continue Reading at GameSpot

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender to get Magic: The Gathering card set
    www.polygon.com
MagicCon, the annual convention for all things Magic: The Gathering, is currently underway in Chicago and Wizards of the Coast has had a few key announcements to share. Among them was the reveal of the companys next Universes Beyond set for MTG, the latest in a series of crossover event-style card sets that have brought the likes of Wolverine and Sephiroth into the game. Avatar: The Last Airbender will be the next pop culture darling to get adapted into its own set of MTG cards, as revealed in the above teaser video; the set will be available Nov. 21.The Avatar: The Last Airbender set will be Standard legal, meaning you can use these elemental bending cards alongside other classic MTG cards in a regular game. The same is now also true for all of the Universes Beyond sets, although many of these cards were originally not marketed or released as Standard legal decks. This change is a relatively recent one, and it makes the landscape of MTG a bit more like Super Smash Bros. than it ever previously was. The decision has been somewhat controversial among those MTG fans who preferred the game as it was (with its own fantasy lore and world established), but Universes Beyond also clearly presents an opening for lapsed fans and total newcomers to pick up MTG based on their attachment to the various IPs on display. When it comes to drawing in new fans, it makes sense to see Avatar: The Last Airbender as the next item on Wizards slate, following closely on the heels of the Final Fantasy MTG card reveals earlier this week. Fans already know that Wizards has more Universes Beyond crossovers coming in 2025, and theyre likely to be similarly huge IPs, if the previous examples are anything to go by.

  • Nintendos Alarmo has broken out of its cage and is now available at Best Buy
    www.polygon.com
Nintendos Alarmo is currently $99.99 at Best Buy, the same price it costs at the Nintendo store but you can get it without a subscription. All of us have dreamed of waking up to the ding ding dinging of Mario collecting coins or the wet rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire in Splatoon. Phone alarms are too modern, too pleasant. Thats probably why Nintendo created the Alarmo, a persistent little alarm clock that will play music and sound effects from games to jolt you out of bed. And now you can finally get one outside the walls of Nintendo, and without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. You get the red alarm clock Nintendo apparently ditched the idea for other colors during development and all 35 wake-up scenes from popular Switch games, like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. These scenes start off by playing music, but will fire off different sounds based on the movement the clock detects from you in bed.Different alarm settings will change how the Alarmo behaves in the morning. Steady Mode increases the intensity of the sounds to try to force you out of bed. Gentle Mode keeps the noises consistent. And Button Mode just enables a snooze button. When its time to sleep, the Alarmo can also play soothing sounds to make you drowsy. Once you drift off, it will log your sleep patterns so you can see if all that time scrolling through TikTok is holding you back. The data isnt as robust as you get with a sleep tracking app, but it can give you a good idea of how youre doing over the course of a month. And before you ask yes, it can play Doom.
