(Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty Images)Getty ImagesJoseph Parker understood the assignment. On Saturday night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the perennial title contender made quick work of late-replacement Martin Bakole. Parker scored a second-round TKO victory after landing a titanic overhand right that landed on the top of Bakoles head. The huge Congolese heavyweight who weighed in at 315 pounds on Friday stumbled and ultimately went down. Bakole got to his feet, but he looked compromised. He immediately looked to his corner, and his trainer hopped on the apron to stop the fight. Here is a look at the finish:It may have looked like a premature stoppage on the surface, but when you consider everythingit makes sense. Bakole stepped in on just two days' notice to replace IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, who fell ill during fight week.Is Bakole a big man? Yes, but with a full camp, there is no chance he comes in that much over 315 pounds. Because of the situation, his corner clearly chose to let their big, promising, and relatively young heavyweight live to fight another day.LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 29: Martin Bakole during a Media Day ahead of his upcoming fight ... [+] this weekend on July 29, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Mark Robinson/Matchroom Boxing/Getty Images)Matchroom Boxing/Getty ImagesBakole had a fight set in May against Efe Ajagba. Perhaps Bakoles team didnt want to let their fighter take unnecessary punishment in a bout that would cost them a second fight and payday. Some critics may ask, why take the fight at all? Thats a fair question, but boxing is a business as much as it is a sport. Every fight a fighter decides to take is a business decisionone way or another. As for Parker, he comes out looking even better. He could have refused to fight Bakole when Dubois pulled out. The fight against Dubois was going to be a title fight. Had Parker lost to Bakole, the title opportunity would have gone out the window.Still, he took the risk and passed the test with flying colors.RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - FEBRUARY 22: Joseph Parker knocks out Martin Bakole during the WBO Interim ... (Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty Images)Getty ImagesAt this point, anything short of a title shot simply doesnt make much sense for Parker. A fight against Dubois would be most reasonable. However, Parker now has the best case to be Oleksandr Usyks next opponent.Usyk is currently the WBO, WBA and WBC heavyweight champion and fresh off back-to-back wins over Tyson Fury. With Fury having retired, the options at heavyweight have decreased.Parker could renew acquaintances with Anthony Joshua. That fight would be a pretty big one in the United Kingdomwhich is the case with all of AJs fights. Joshua has already faced and defeated Parker by a wide unanimous decision back in 2018. • Asus will sell a mouse thats also an aromatic oil diffuser
    www.digitaltrends.com
The tech industry often gives us an odd gizmo, or two. Like a talking AI pin with a holographic display, a furry robot that nibbles on your fingers, or a handheld breathing gadget to replace the cuddly pets. Theyre not always practical, but on a few occasions, luck strikes twice.Take for example the Asus Fragrance Mouse, which the company first showcased at the annual tech pilgrimage that is CES earlier this year. I never thought it would make it to the shelves, but Im glad I was wrong. Asus has officially announced it as a standalone product in its home market, and it is coming to the US.Recommended VideosIts a fully-functional mouse, but the real gem is a dedicated compartment on the underside where you can fill any aromatic oil of your choice. I quite like this approach, because Asus is not limiting buyers to a pricey proprietary contraption, and letting them pick any aromatic flavored oil to suit their mood.Oh, the sheer potential for pranks here!AsusThe removable vial can be washed and refilled with different scents, adds the company. This wont be the first project of its kind. eScent created a wearable device in the form of a necklace, which released a special scent to create an aroma bubble around the user based on their emotional or physical state. Then there are phone cases that can activate by scratching, releasing a fragrance due to surface friction. At CES 2023, a company named OVR announced the ION 3 wearable scent kit for XR hardware, capable of producing hundreds of unique scents using a system of cartridges.Experts at the City University of Hong Kong and Beihang University in Beijing developed a wearable sensor that looks like a patch, and connects to a VR headset. Based on miniaturized odor generators, it used perfumed wax to produce scents in less than two seconds.AsusComing back to the Asus Fragrance Mouse, it seems like the most mainstream attempt at integrating some olfactory bliss with consumer tech. The company hasnt said how much its going to cost, but looking at the overall build and the modest tech specs, it shouldnt go beyond the realm of expensive RGB-armed gaming mice. The unique Asus mouse comes with a thumb rest on the side, and offers a three-stage DPI adjustment system that peaks at a respectable 2,400 dpi. The company is also promising a 10-million-click-lifespan and also serves dual-mode connectivity over Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless lanes.Editors Recommendations

  • My dad and I took my 94-year-old grandfather on a road trip. He died 6 months later, and I'm glad we have the memories.
    www.businessinsider.com
Growing up, my family would take road trips from New England to Florida. When my grandfather was 94, me and my dad took him for one last road trip.He died six months later, but the memories from that trip will always be with me.Growing up, my family was fortunate enough to take a few road trips from New England to Florida. We'd pile suitcases, razor scooters, Doritos, and coolers into the proverbial family station wagon and brave the tumultuous nearly 2,000 miles of Interstate 95.This stretch of highway carries over 100 million people, including thousands of trucks and semis carrying goods throughout the country; it is not for the faint of heart at times. My paternal grandfather started this tradition in his 70s with a group of older friends. When it got too cold in New England, they migrated south with the birds. We decided to take him on a road trip againAs my grandfather got older and his group of friends dwindled, the trip became more arduous and less frequent. He was a virile man, working until his 80s and shoulder-pressing my adolescent sister to prove his continued strength. However, as he got into his mid-90s, that virility diminished, and even walking became difficult. After Christmas in his 94th year, his morale had crashed. He required a walker or wheelchair at times, and the cold got to him more than ever. It became clear he needed the respite of a southern migration. The author went on a road trip with his dad and 94-year-old grandfather. Courtesy of the author So the 94-year-old World War II vet, his motorcycle and car enthusiast son (my father), and a naive recent college grad who thought they knew more about the world than they did (me) loaded the Trailblazer and followed the birds. Grandpa sat in the back seat with his face against the window while my father and I split driving duties in the front. The stretch 95 from the George Washington Bridge through New Jersey was always brutal, but hitting Delaware was like seeing the greener grass on the other side of the fence. Now, state sizes would fluctuate, traffic would subside, and we'd ease into the relief of warmth. This is where my grandfather found great joy in tracking the milemakers on the side of the road. He'd call out each green sign as we progressed, "10 miles to Maryland."Next, we hit the gauntlet of the Chesapeake and mid-Atlantic. Baltimore tunnel can add hours to the already bullish commute, and DC is like playing traffic Russian roulette. Luckily, the old man knew the detours of these areas, and we passed the Mason-Dixon with comparative ease. The shift in the environment led to Grandpa spinning some new yarns: his zig zag train ride in the war that brought him to Fort Bragg, the time he nearly sold his Cadillac to a stranger at a gas station on this route, stealing oranges from a golf course. The external temperature had barely changed from New England, but he was getting warmer.Eventually, after reading every billboard between the Carolinas aloud, he took a long nap. There was a sort of silent understanding between my father and me, knowing this trip might be the last of its kind.It was his last tripAfter about an 18-hour trek, we hit the Sunshine State. You could see the smile light up on the old man's face. The following week, we pushed the wheelchair down the Hollywood boardwalk, stopping for an occasional cold beer at tiki bars or street vendors. My grandfather was in complete awe by the wave pool at Margaritaville, watching would-be surfers tumble into the chlorinated water. The stories continued, too. I learned my grandfather was born on a kitchen table. Our ultimate patriarch (his father) had blue eyes, a rarity for Italian immigrants in the 20s. Grandpa would push his handicapped daughter's wheelchair onto the beach and carry her into the water so she could feel the surf on her legs. I wish I could have carried him from his, but the man never wore shorts. We'd end our Floridian pilgrimage and headed back north after a week. The old man died about six months later, but moments from that week were constantly part of his conversations until then. They'll continue to be a part of mine forever.

  • Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev calls prediction markets 'the future' and says the company will play a 'leading role'
    www.businessinsider.com
Robinhood CEO says prediction markets are the "future of not just trading, but also information."Vlad Tenev said he wants Robinhood to play a 'leading role' in developing them.Prediction markets are bets on the outcome of a future event, like an election.Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said his company is going all in on prediction markets, saying they're the "future."Tenev discussed prediction markets and his financial services company during Friday's episode of "Hard Fork," a podcast produced by The New York Times. Tenev who's worth over $3 billion shared his opinion about how the prediction market differs from sports betting."I think that mechanically there's some similarities, but they're different things," Tenev said."First of all, I think prediction markets are the future of not just trading, but also information," he said. "I've been a big believer in the power of prediction markets for a long time kind of a student of them and I think prediction markets should be live for everything."Prediction markets are essentially bets on the outcome of future events. Traders place bets based on what they believe will happen. If enough people participate, the collective input could be a strong indicator of what might actually happen.Tenev compared prediction markets to traditional news models like newspapers and broadcast news. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said prediction markets are the "future" of information. Steve Granitz/FilmMagic "People pay for broadcast news, too, indirectly in the form of advertising. So, what prediction markets are is the news faster, right?" Tenev said. "In some cases, you get it even before it happens. So, the economic value of that as a product and service should be at least as high, and I would argue strictly greater, than the news after it happens."Robinhood had some success with its prediction market for the2024 presidential election, which largely predicted Donald Trump would win though Kamala Harris made a late surge after an influential Iowa poll wrongly predicted the state would land in the Democrat's column.Prediction markets on various betting platforms normally a realm for sports exploded in popularity during the election.Robinhood also launched Super Bowl event contracts earlier this month but stopped the rollout after a request from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission."At the end of the day, I think what you'll see is prediction markets are here to stay," he said. "I think some of the details around what types of prediction markets are classified in what category I think will be worked out, but Robinhood will play a leading role in that because I think this is like incredibly important technology."Tenev talked about the potential prediction markets have for Robinhood's business during its 2024 fourth-quarter earnings call this month."So we were one of the few platforms that offered the ability to trade the election and that was very successful for us," Tenev said. "We had over half a billion contracts traded in right around a week leading up to the election, and so what you should expect from us is a comprehensive events platform that will give access to prediction markets across a wide variety of contracts later this year."
