  • The lesson of Larry Ellisons misadventures in farming
    techcrunch.com
In BriefPosted:9:17 PM PST February 23, 2025Image Credits:Sensei FarmsThe lesson of Larry Ellisons misadventures in farmingLarry Ellisons leap into farming with his company, Sensei Farms, serves up a classic reminder: being a genius in one arena doesnt mean success in another. As the WSJ reports, the Oracle co-founder set out to reinvent agriculture on Hawaiis Lnai Island, which he scooped up for $300 million back in 2012. Eight years and more than $500 million later, the project is still floundering.Ellison dreamed of AI-powered greenhouses and robot harvesters feeding the world sustainably. Instead, Sensei has been tripped up by tech snarls like Wi-Fi issues and solar panels battered by Lanais winds and rookie mistakes. Think greenhouses designed for Israels desert climate, when Lnai is typically muggy. The company also mixed mature and baby plants together, a blueprint for a pest paradise.Sensei, co-founded by a medical doctor and led currently by a tech exec who runs Sensei from Boston, has had small wins, reports the WSJ. Its lettuce and cherry tomatoes now appear at the islands few local markets and restaurants. But constant delays, leadership shake-ups, and pricey blunders, including cannabis grow houses that needed to be gutted and rebuilt, highlight a tough truth: even bottomless funding is no match for the hard lessons of a specialized industry.Above: Larry Ellison and his co-founder in Sensei Farms, David AgusTopics

  • Let's talk about texture export formats
    realtimevfx.com
I wanted to do a quick comparison of the most common formats. Please feel free to add more context and discuss in the rest of the thread.TGA : Personally Ive been a TARGA fan for the longest time. Its simple and straightforward, no weird shenanigans, not much to say about besides, if youre in doubt just use TARGA. Only downside I can think of is that typically software (like Photoshop) requires you to explicitly define the alpha channel instead of being able to use the alpha of the canvas.Pros:Ridiculously easy to use.Con:Often uncompressed so it can take up a bit more space.Need to explicitly define the alpha channel.PNG : PNG is interesting, Its technically lossless but has this quirk where, if you export an image with an alpha channel, it compresses out the rgb info where the alpha is 0. This can be nice if you need something in which alpha and color are linked like a logo. But for a lot of effects, you want the mask to be usable independently of the color information.Theres also some weirdness with software offering a pre multiplied output, but honestly youll want to avoid that 99% of the time anyway.Pros:Typically compressed but still lossless, so often a bit lighter than targa (honestly we rarely care but yeah)No need to explicitly define alpha channelsWidely used and supportedCons:Complex and quirky behavior when used with alpha channelWhen already using targa (which most productions will be) introduces inconsistencies.PSD: This one depends on the engine you use, but Unreal (and maybe even Unity) support psd as an import format(flattened result). This has some nice benefits. It means you only need to keep track of 1 source file and have that one be linked in your engine. Since we ship the BC textures we might not care about the fact that the psd is massive. However, even more so than PNG the actual imported result can be a bit unpredictable esp. when using alpha, so use with care.Pros:Non-destructive workflows are easier to setup since source file is linked directlyCons:Massive file size (but typically productions keep their source files around anyway in case they want to make adjustments or reuse it)Sometimes behaves quirky with alpha info.DDS: I guess we gotta talk about it. DDS essentially allows you to save block compressed(s3) textures. Personally I wish dds was better supported. Both dds import and export are rarely supported and even if they are they typically only have partial support. On the other hand, this is kinda the opposite of PSD, it creates a destructive workflow where the files you import in engine are already hyper compressed.Pros:More control to directly compress textures yourself instead of relying on the engine to do it for you.Small file sizes.Shipping memory cost is super obvious (cause youre just going to ship the file you just created)Cons:Need everyone on production to be more aware of compression.Destructive workflowJpg : Err, no. 1 post - 1 participant Read full topic

  • Forget ChatGPT: Why Agentic AI Is The Next Big Retail Disruption
    www.forbes.com
Agentic AI is poised to revolutionize e-commerce through autonomous shopping assistants, dynamic ... [+] pricing, and automated supply chain management, with major players like Amazon and Salesforce already deploying these technologies.Adobe StockThere's been a lot of talk recently about agentic AI and its potential to transform industries. AI, combined with autonomy, is likely to reshape the way we live, work, and do business.Larger organizations may have the resources to deploy autonomous employees and AI-driven cybersecurity, but smaller businesses dont have to be left behind. The rise of cloud platforms offering agentic services means there are opportunities for all.E-commerce, often highlighted as a sector primed for agentic AI adoption, is an industry built on digital interactions. Agents capable of handling shopping-related tasks, optimizing supply chains, and creating personalized customer experiences are already here.Retail, in particular e-commerce, has been the poster child for agentic AI and is a sector where there is a lot of hype but also some very compelling use cases. So, lets explore whats happening in this space and what we can expect to see in the future. What Is Agentic AI And Why E-Commerce?First, just in case youre not totally sure what Im talking about agentic AI refers to AI systems built around the same language processing capabilities as services like ChatGPT but capable of carrying out much more complex, goal-oriented tasks with minimal human intervention. For example, they can interact with websites, fill out forms, collect and submit information and make payments. There are a number of reasons why e-commerce as a business sector makes a great testbed for agentic adoption.Firstly, its infrastructure, business processes and operations are built around digital platforms and data. This means AI agents can more easily connect with, talk to and operate its systems.Secondly, its a sector where battles are won and lost based on customer experience. Agentic AI could be hugely useful for e-commerce businesses looking to differentiate themselves based on more efficient, personalized and automated CX.Today, AI agents can automate e-commerce inventory management, shipping and delivery, customer service and dynamic pricing strategies. Tomorrow for businesses that clear the substantial technical, regulatory and ethical hurdles they could be capable of far more.Agentic AI In Practice: E-CommerceAs you would expect from the ripe possibilities, there are already many use cases for agentic AI in e-commerce.Shopping bots are becoming available that are capable of hopping between online retailers and searching for the best prices, deals and promotions for their users. Salesforce has released its Agentforce platform, which lets retailers build AI agents that can interact with their systems. In customer service, agents can help customers troubleshoot problems far more flexibly than standard genAI chatbots. They can even take control of users systems to diagnose and fix problems automatically. Amazons Q platform lets businesses get started with developing this agentic capability.Agents can also help retailers dynamically price products and services by tracking the competition. They could even come up with novel new metrics that they could use to set prices more efficiently, taking into account factors humans might overlook. Amazon already gives its merchants the ability to have AI dynamically set prices, so adding agentic functions for even more powerful automation is a no-brainer.And with AI and generative AI already deployed in supply chain and inventory management by companies like Walmart and Alibaba, agentic supply chain and inventory management bots are the next step. They will negotiate with suppliers and distributors to coordinate deliveries, restocking and optimizing the use of warehouse space. Why The Future Of E-Commerce Is AgenticLooking further ahead, I believe agentic AI will be just as integral to e-commerce as previous transformational waves, like machine learning and the mobile internet. It could even turn out to be a significant step towards the long-term goal of developing generalized AI AI that can learn how to do just about any task, much like a human, rather than just the tasks it was created for.(For fictional examples, think of Star Treks Data or, more scarily, The Terminator, for examples of how awesome or terrifying that could be!)While agentic and generalized AI are not the same thing, todays agentic tools give us a glimpse of how that future could play out.Businesses that want to be a part of this future will have to overcome technological, cultural, ethical and regulatory challenges. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be working out how this new breed of machine workers fits in with human talent. But with agentic AI set to define the next stage in the evolution of e-commerce, any investments in conquering those hurdles are likely to be more than worthwhile.

  • Sonar Bets On AI Code Automation With AutoCodeRover Acquisition
    www.forbes.com
Software DevelopmentPixabaySonars acquisition of AutoCodeRover, announced on February 19, 2025, marks a strategic move to integrate agentic AI into enterprise software development. The deal positions the Geneva-based code quality leader to automate software maintenance at scale while sharpening its competitive edge against a growing ecosystem of AI-powered DevOps tools.Sonar is a leading provider of clean code solutions, empowering developers to write and maintain high-quality, secure and maintainable code. Founded in 2008, the company offers tools like SonarQube, SonarCloud and SonarLint, supporting over 30 programming languages.Sonar's "Clean as You Code" methodology helps organizations reduce technical debt and enhance software reliability. With over 400,000 organizations and 7 million users, SonarSource is trusted by major enterprises, including 75% of Fortune 100 companies. Its solutions integrate seamlessly into development workflows, ensuring continuous code quality and security.AutoCodeRover, developed by NUS researchers in 2024, is an AI agent for program improvement, distinct from code generation tools like GitHub Copilot. It analyzes existing codebases using abstract syntax trees and combines large language models with fault localization techniques.Technical Foundation and Implementation ChallengesAutoCodeRover employs a multi-model AI architecture designed to analyze codebases, infer developer intent from documentation and comments and propose targeted fixes. Unlike conventional code generators, its approach factors in project-specific constraints before implementing changes. Some benchmark tests demonstrated a 46% success rate in resolving real-world GitHub issues. One of the platforms differentiators is its LLM-agnostic design, enabling enterprises to integrate models from OpenAI, Anthropic and other providers. This flexibility allows organizations to optimize for cost, performance and data privacy. Sonar plans to embed these capabilities into its SonarQube platform by late 2025, streamlining automated remediation within code review pipelines. However, the integration faces two significant hurdles: maintaining code integrity across complex enterprise systems and securing developer trust. While AutoCodeRover reduces manual debugging time, its current success rate necessitates human oversight. Sonars VP of Growth, Harry Wang, underscores the importance of a "human-in-the-loop" approach, where AI streamlines routine fixes while engineers retain control over critical modifications.Market Context and Competitive PositioningThe acquisition arrives as enterprises seek solutions to mitigate productivity stagnation in software engineering. Industry reports estimate that developers spend 4050% of their time addressing technical debt instead of building new features. This aligns with Gartners forecast that by 2028, 75% of enterprise software engineers will prioritize AI-assisted code maintenance.Sonars move counters similar investments from GitHub (Copilot Workspace), JetBrains (AI Assistant) and startups like Cognition Labs. AutoCodeRover differentiates itself through a repository-wide code analysis model rather than focusing on isolated snippets. Its ability to maintain architectural consistency across modifications gives it an edge over many existing AI-powered coding assistants. The deal also enhances Sonars Asia-Pacific footprint, leveraging Singapores push to establish itself as a global AI hub. The newly planned Singapore R&D center will deepen Sonars collaboration with research institutions such as the National University of Singapores computing faculty, reinforcing its regional market strategy.Long-Term Implications for Software DevelopmentSonars investment signals a broader industry shift in software development economics. By offloading low-level debugging and refactoring to AI, Sonar aims to evolve from a quality assurance gatekeeper to a productivity enabler. This aligns with the trend toward self-healing software but raises fundamental questions about AIs role in creative problem-solving.The success of this acquisition depends on Sonars ability to balance automation with developer oversighta challenge underscored by mixed industry reactions to AI-assisted coding initiatives. For enterprises, the deal highlights the necessity of clear governance frameworks covering AI-driven code changes, liability considerations and review protocols. For technology leaders, this acquisition reflects a broader industry shift toward balancing rapid feature delivery with the escalating burden of technical debt. AutoCodeRovers proprietary system, a top performer in SWE-bench evaluations for automated software issue resolution, leverages large language models and contextual code analysis to execute debugging, refactoring and dependency updates across eight programming languages. As AutoCodeRover becomes part of Sonars platform, enterprises should track its impact on software development workflows and technical debt reduction. Early pilots suggest that its effectiveness lies primarily in standardized maintenance tasks rather than complex architectural decisions, reinforcing the continued need for human oversight in enterprise-scale software systems. The deals ultimate value will rest on Sonars ability to translate cutting-edge AI research into reliable, production-grade software toolingan obstacle that has derailed previous AI-driven code initiatives.

  • Uber's CEO said he still wants robotaxis — and he's keeping the door open for Musk
    www.businessinsider.com
Uber's CEO wants to work with Tesla on robotaxis. But Tesla wants to go it alone.Uber partners with Waymo in Austin and will compete with Tesla's autonomous vehicle platform.Analysts suggest Tesla may need Uber or Lyft to scale its robotaxi operations.Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, said he wants to work with Tesla on robotaxis even though the electric vehicle maker isn't interested right now."At this point, they want to build it alone," Khosrowshahi said in an interview with Bloomberg at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Miami on Friday. "Life is long, but we would love to partner with them."Khosrowshahi added that Uber and Alphabet-owned Waymo, who partner in Austin, will compete with Tesla in the autonomous vehicles market when they launch in the city.Earlier this month, Uber said it was opening an "interest list" for Austin users who want to be the first to try Waymo robotaxis on the Uber app. Tesla unveiled its robotaxis, called Cybercabs, in October. They are expected to launch in June in Austin.Khosrowshahi's Friday remarks came about a week after he said that he hoped Tesla would work with Uber.In an interview published on February 14, Khosrowshahi said, "No one wants to compete against Tesla or Elon, if you can help it."Door open for TeslaMusk has previously said Tesla would create its own ride-hailing platform a cross between Uber and Airbnb apps for riders to call a driverless car. While a portion of the fleet would be owned by Tesla, individual Tesla customers would also have the option to add their vehicles.Despite these plans, Khosrowshahi's Friday remarks suggested he was willing to keep the door open for a partnership with Tesla."It makes a lot of economic sense" for Tesla drivers to use Uber as a platform, he said. "What we bring is demand to the AV ecosystem when demand often is quite variable."Analysts have stressed this, too.In a note published on the day the Cybercab was unveiled, Jefferies analysts wrote that Tesla may struggle without a partner like Uber or Lyft.Tesla "potentially underappreciates the obstacles to scaling a robotaxi fleet" such as the technology, asset ownership, regulation, fleet management, and demand required to run an operation at scale, the analysts wrote. "We also believe TSLA could struggle to scale fleet operations without offering access to demand via Uber/Lyft."Independent analyst Dan O'Dowd, previous Musk critic, said that the contrast between Tesla and robotaxi competitors like Waymo was "stark.""Until Tesla robotaxis are transporting 100,000 paying customers a week around major American cities like Waymo does, Tesla robotaxi is nothing more than the latest work of fiction to come out of the Warner Bros. Studio," he said in a note at the time.Investor pressureUber has faced pressure from investors to ramp up its autonomous vehicle strategy, and shareholders have been closely monitoring developments with self-driving competitors. In December, Uber's stock plunged 10% after Waymo announced its expansion to Miami without mentioning Uber.In some cities, like Austin, Phoenix, and Atlanta, Waymo rides are only available on the Uber app. In Los Angeles and San Francisco, Waymo is available on its own booking platform.Days after the Waymo expansion news,Cruise, announced it was shutting down operations.Following the Cruise news, the ride-hailing platform's chief financial officer, Prashanth Mahendra-Rajah, tried to quell investor concerns. He said the company was well positioned to be a demand aggregator for AVs and that it still believes AVs are critical for its growth.Besides Waymo, Uber has self-driving partnerships with Tesla's biggest competitor, Chinese EV maker BYD, and with AV company Aurora Innovation.Uber's stock is up over 30% so far this year.
