• Transparent computer inspired by the Peppers Ghost illusion has a classic steampunk vibe
    www.yankodesign.com
Raspberry Pi as a basic computing machine is useful for a wide array of purposes, ranging from home automation and triggered inputs for gadgets, to computer science projects or advanced robotics. The modular utility of this inexpensive computer for IOT applications makes it a versatile choice for seamless hardware and software connectivity. The tiny single-board computing machine costing as low as $30 comes with USB ports, and no wonder it is the favorite play toy for DIYers who like to create unique things. VEEB Projects likes to tinker around with Raspberry Pi and 3D-printed creations for some cool DIYs like the Precision Turntable and a Super 8 Cyberdesk.Their love for the affordable computer continues with this eye-popping DIY that brings a 150-year-old illusion to life on your desk. The project is centered around the Peppers Ghost illusion a classic optical illusion that creates the appearance of a ghostly figure or image that seems to float in mid-air, often used in theater, amusement parks, and museums to create hologram-like effects. This illusion was first put to the test in the 1860s by John Henry Pepper in a theater, and its still used today for creating holographic effects in many live shows and attractions.Designer: VEEB ProjectsDubbed the Transparent Floating Display, this DIY gadget takes its design cues from the classic stock ticker tape machine invented in 1870 by Edward A. Calahan of the American Telegraph Company that was the standard when it came to transmitting stock price information over long distances before the inventions of computers. Used for the early half of the 20th century, these reliable tickers were in use until the early 1970s. Employing the complex play of reflections and light, the holographic dome projects a very clear image thanks to a reflector positioned at an angle of 45 degrees inside the housing. For better viewing when placed on a desk, the see-through floating display can be toggled to an angle of 60 degrees. At the base of the gadget is a small round LCD panel that is connected to the Raspberry Pi 5 having 16GB RAM. To make the source image visible from the LCD, a privacy shield is used.According to the maker, it took a lot of tinkering and mathematics to get the assembly just right for the illusion to work hitch-free. VEEB employed the magic of algebra to sort the distortions for a clear transparent effect that looks mesmerizing in a geeky workstation setup. The round base of the dome is created using 3D printing to conceal all the hardware inside. One can also substitute a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 to recreate this effect. The makers are kind enough to keep the project open source as all the code and 3D models for the design are shared on GitHub. What would we put inside the dome of this steampunk desk gadget? Maybe a cool music equalizer visualization, To-do-list notes, vital notifications, or a virtual aquarium! The post Transparent computer inspired by the Peppers Ghost illusion has a classic steampunk vibe first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Apple looks to inject $500B into US economy
    www.computerworld.com
Apple plans to inject billions of dollars into the US economy, spending$500 billionin the US over the next four years and promising expansion, new manufacturing facilities, and big investments in advanced manufacturing and R&D.The announcement follows last weeks meeting between Apple CEO Tim Cook, and US President Donald J. Trump. We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and were proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our countrys future, Cook said. Well keep working with people and companies across this country to help write an extraordinary new chapter in the history of American innovation. In acomment onTruth Social, Trump said the investment reflected Apples faith in what we are doing, without which, they wouldnt be investing ten cents. Thank you Tim Cook and Apple. It remains to be seen whether Apples investments will be enough to mitigate the administrations decision to impose tariffs on Chinese goods. They dont want to be in the tariffs, Trump said after meeting with Cook last week.Apple announced a similar range of investments during the last term of the president, which did help protect iPhones against tariffs at that time. What Apple is promisingIt helps that Apple is one of Americas biggest taxpayers, having paid $75 billion in US taxes in the past five years. While some of those tax dollars should perhaps have been levied elsewhere, (as theEU insisted about Apples Irish tax breaks), the deeply nationalistic US administrationmost certainly wants that money paid at home.Apple says its investment billions will be spent on a range of different things:The company will double its Advanced Manufacturing FundIt will build a new advanced manufacturing facility in Texas, where it will product Apple Intelligence servers. It intends to launch a manufacturing academy in Michigan. And it will invest more in R&D, including additional spending on silicon and AI development. The $500-billion promise also includes its work with suppliers across the US, direct Apple hires, AI investments including data centers, and Apple TV+ productions in 20 states. The company currently claims to supportmore than 2.9 million jobsin the US.What happens in Texas? The factory in Houston, TX seems likely to attract the biggest focus. Apples big idea is to beginmaking Apple Intelligence serversthere later this year, opening a 250,000-square-foot-server manufacturing center in which it promises thousands of jobs.Whats interesting about that promise is that it implies Apple intends to make a very large number of these servers and it means several things: that Apple will extend the services it offers viaPrivate Cloud Compute; it intends wide international deployment of these servers; and (speculatively) it will offer these private cloud services as a business in its own right. An iOS developer might want to use space in the private cloud to provide AI services, for example.None of these educated guesses could turn out correct, but a factory with thousands of employees is going to be producing something in very significant quantities. Apple will also expand data center capacity in North Carolina, Iowa, Oregon, Arizona, and Nevada.Advanced Manufacturing FundApples Advanced Manufacturing Fund has made some key investments in support of third-party innovation as it is applied to Apple products in the past think about Corning Glass, for example. The latest promise includes a massive $10 billion investment in skills development at Apples planned academy in Detroit, MI and billions in support of TSMCs Fab 21 plant in Arizona. And with a view to Industry 3.0, the Apple Manufacturing Academy will consult with small and mid-sized companies on implementing AI and smart manufacturing techniques. It will provide free in-person and online courses, with a skills development curriculum that teaches workers skills like project management and manufacturing process optimization. In the national interestWhat is interesting is the extent to which Apple today can make significant investments in the US that were perhaps less possible during the first Trump Presidency.Todays Apple is significantly less umbilically connected to China, for example. It is putting in place a distributed manufacturing and supply chain and has been working hard with key suppliers such as TSMC to bring at least some production to the US. That will include processor production in Arizona. Apple will never be able to base all its manufacturing in the US, but the promise of tens of thousands of additional jobs does mean something. It is also highly significant that much of Apples promises relate to artificial intelligence including skills, manufacturing, and R&D. That matters because AI development is quite clearly in the US national interest, and Apples multi-billion dollar investment in the field will make a significant difference to US tech power. You can follow me on social media!
