One thing to keep in mind is this queen-sized sleeper sofa takes up a substantial amount of room to maximize sleeping space. A firmer option thats available in 21 colors, the trendy silhouette earned major style points from contributor Erika Owen. I love this sleeper for the way it seamlessly wiggles between couch and bed mode, says Owen. Its a bestseller for the retailer in large part because of how sturdy the handcrafted bed frame is (this is a pullout-style sofa bed with a gel-infused mattress inside it), but the sofa itself is also handsome enough to gel with a variety of living room styles. It comes in plenty of neutral hues and fabrics (with a few wildcard picks like orange and yellow performance velvet here and there), but this probably isnt a couch that will match your freak if you want something more out-there.Burrow Shift Sleeper SofaDimensionsRegular: 84"W x 32.5"D x 33.5"HPulled-out: 80"L x 60"WMaterialsCore foam, memory foam, jersey knit, down alternative fillShippingShips in 1-3 weeks, comes in smaller box due to modular designReturn PolicyN/ABurrow has perfected the art of the couch-in-a-box business, so its no wonder that the brand made an appearance on this list too. With a shallower depth, the Shift might lack the same back and neck support as some of the other picks on this list, but it more than makes up for that with its modern silhouette. Cushions on all sides dial up the comfort factor, and the short, stubby legs keep things grounded in more ways than one. The couch has a great party trick when guests are over, too: The bottom cushions can be flipped to reveal a futon-style sleeping surface (and the brand even throws in two complimentary cushions to set up your couch surfers for a restful nights sleep).Interior Define Sloan Sleeper Sofa

  • Grace Fuller Marroquin Adds Lush Beauty to a Hamptons Home
    www.architecturaldigest.com
It can be hard to remember, sometimes, that the Hamptons, with its relentless traffic, over-the-top shopping, and competitive restaurant reservations, was once considered a refuge. The east end of Long Island was a place to rest and recharge, to bond with nature and to escape urban pressuresnot create a whole set of new ones. The garden of Anu Duggal in Water Mill hearkens back to that earlier era. It is a reminder that even in our 24-hour-connected world, serenity is still possible, and serendipity is powerful. Duggal, founding partner of the venture capital firm Female Founders Fund and host of The Two Percentpodcast, had no intention of buying a property in the area. I was never a Hamptons regular, she says. Then, while scrolling through Zillow, she stumbled upon a small house that had once belonged to the esteemed New York Times editor Arthur Gelb. I kept coming back to it, she recalls. I had never even been to Water Mill, and I didnt drive, so I took an Uber to see it. She laughs. Since then, I have had to learn to drive. While Duggal was confident that she could handle the interiors herself, she needed help with the grounds. Enter AD100 landscape designer Grace Fuller Marroquin, who had recently launched her practice after a career in magazines. The property was mostly just lawn, she recalls. There were no interesting shrubs or perennials. It is not a huge lot, only a little over an acre. But what it did have was the beautiful backdrop of Mill Pond.Fuller Marroquin began by removing and simplifying, thinning out the mature native tupelo trees to let in sunlight and open up views of the water. We got rid of bamboo and other invasives, she says. We relocated existing boxwoods and added ilex and rhododendrons, so there would be structure in the winter. Elsewhere, they kept the nice old-growth brush at the edge of the wetlands, as well as the Eastern pines, sycamores, and sweet gum trees.New paths now wend through lush plantings of ferns, hollyhocks, lupines, liatris, peonies, hydrangeas, and more. I always believe in minimizing lawn and maximizing the garden, Fuller Marroquin says. I like softening and blending the hardscape with nature. I am not a hedge girl. The result is a bosky green oasis, a constrained wilderness that soothes even as it inspires curiosity and promotes wandering. Small though it is, it is impossible to experience the garden all at once, and it changes throughout each season.Of course, maintaining that seemingly natural and effortless look requires vigilance. Fortunately, Duggal has taken to gardening with the passion of a true convert. She even ended up taking a course in garden design at Great Dixter. A garden is all about patience. I didnt understand that, she says. But now, there is always something in bloom. My weekend guests never leave without a bouquet. Adds Fuller Marroquin, I wanted to make it a sanctuary. That was the goal.

Tesla Cybertrucks gathering dust at Tesla Motors dealership in California, December 6, 2024. (Photo ... [+] by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images)Gado via Getty ImagesTesla is throwing discounts at its Cybertruckup to $6,000as inventories for the controversial electric truck pile up in Canada and the U.S. Last year was the vehicles first full year of production, after long delays, and the Cybertruck did not sell as expected. And Elon Musks recent antics in Washington, D.C. are only helping to further alienate customers.$7,500 Tax Credit Expected To Vanish SoonEven $6000 discounts aren't drawing buyers into showrooms. (Photo by Chesnot/Getty Images)Getty ImagesOnce hailed as a groundbreaking pickup, Teslas futuristic Cybertruck is now facing an increasingly complicated sales struggle. Outside the factory, a sizable and expanding stock of unsold Cybertrucks is collecting dust, forcing Tesla to slap on further discounts. In fact, the Cybertruck's long-term sustainability is being called into question by these latest developments. The recently launched 2025 Cybertruck is now eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles, but not the 2024 model, which Tesla still has in inventory. Speaking of that tax credit, by the way, recent utterings from GOP senators suggest that the handy $7,500 incentive may be eliminated soon, as was promoted by President Trump on the campaign trail. So what is the EV company doing? Tesla has decided to discount its 2024 Cybertrucks by as much as $4,000 for the standard spec and $6,000 for its Foundations Series.Production Target Of 250,000 Is Not FeasibleThe challenges Tesla has had trying to sell its Cybertrucks are widely documented. Earlier this year, we heard that the company was using unusual strategies to sell vehicles like lowering prices and even removing the "Foundation Series" badges from higher spec models and selling them as regular models. The unconventional styling was polarizing. (Photo by Tayfun Coskun/Anadolu via Getty Images)Anadolu via Getty ImagesThe ballooning inventory and blossoming discounts are the clearest indications so far that the Cybertrucks demand, in its current form, is not in step with Teslas expectations. Given the state of the industry, the companys lofty target of producing 250,000 Cybertrucks a year is arguably just not feasible. Some analysts have suggested that the EV company will need to prioritize production of a cheaper single-motor Cybertruck to boost demand. The Cybertruck Did Not Live Up To The HypeThe situation surrounding the Cybertruck emphasizes how difficult it is to introduce unusual vehicles to the market. Although there was a lot of initial hype around the trucks futuristic unconventional design and electric drivetrain, its high cost and initial limited supply prevented its wider adoption.Price cuts and discounts can work if theres a decent client base sitting on the fence considering a purchase. But with the standard all-wheel-drive model and its $4,000 discount, how many people are going to say, "Not at $66,990. But Ill take it as $62,990!? Only relevant in America as no other country will permit sales, the Cybertrucks shine seems to be fading more and more with each passing day.MORE FROM FORBES

  • The Trump Admin Thinks Affordable Fiber Broadband Is Woke
    www.techdirt.com
The Trump Admin Thinks Affordable Fiber Broadband Is Wokefrom the everything-I-don't-like-is-woke deptThu, Feb 27th 2025 05:23am - Karl BodeIts understandably not going to get the same attention as thedismantling of numerous government agencies at the hands of rich unelected manbabies, but the Trump administration is also taking aim at all the promising parts of the 2021 infrastructure bill. Especially as it relates to broadband.TheInfrastructure Investment and Jobs Act(IIJA) contained a whopping $42.5 billion to expand broadband access under the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program. To make sure that money wasnt wasted, it contained a number of provisions (as the name kind of implies).Like demanding ISPs provide at least one tier of service poor people could afford. Or encouraging networks built with taxpayer money be open access, which,as weve discussed at length, helps boost broadband competition and lower costs. As well as encouragement that taxpayer money be spent on the most future-proof technology (fiber) where applicable. Pretty common sense stuff.King Trump earlobe nibbler Ted Cruz has been whining ever since the infrastructure bill was passed about how these kinds of common sense provisions are woke. Woke, youll recall was a pop culture term that used to mean enlightened, which was hijacked by authoritarians to whine about anything they dont like. Now new Trump NTIA boss Arielle Roth has joined the fun:Roth has criticized the programs emphasis on fiber and a woke social agenda that the NTIA has been pushing in its funding.Again, by woke we mean trying to make sure broadband that uses taxpayer money is affordable to people and trying to make sure that taxpayer money is spent on the best possible technology. What is the extremist GOP really mad about? Well one, they voted against the popular program, only to turn around and try to repeatedly take credit for it. Two, its pretty clear they dont like poor people and minorities. Three, they dont like that a lot of the money might wind up funding popular, community-owned broadband networks, instead of being given to Elon Musk and AT&T. Ive been covering telecom long enough I can tell you exactly how this is going to play out.The BEAD program is largely managed by the NTIA and States. While a lot of its is already earmarked, the GOP is going to work overtime to ensure as much money as possible goes to Elon Musks Starlink. Ignoring that Starlink isnt affordable, doesnt really scale well, ruins astronomical research, is fucking with the ozone layer, lacks decent customer service, and is run by a giant racist toddler. Theyll ignore all the important stuff like making sure U.S. broadband maps are accurate. Meanwhile theyll gut the agency in charge of keeping telecoms from ripping you off (the FCC), resulting in higher bills for everyone. Then, once theyve redirected money to cronies and gutted oversight of the sector and mapping of real-world access, theyll declare mission accomplished on U.S. broadband access.Great stuff, very innovative. And definitely not woke.Filed Under: affordable, bead, broadband, fiber, high speed internet, iija, infrastructure, ntia, telecom

  • Sequoias Roelof Botha warns chumps not to buy into SPVs
    techcrunch.com
One of Sequoias most prominent investors, managing partner Roelof Botha, sees signs of another greed cycle brewing in venture capital, one where the least sophisticated investors will likely get most hurt.He posted a warning on X on Thursday, writing, We remain destined to repeat the mistakes of the past! SPVs are making a come-back, where the lead investor speaks for less than 10% of the capital, yet eagerly lines up the latest set of tourist chumps who think the story will end differently this time. Its only been 3 years. (He punctuated the post with an exploding-head emoji.)That last cycle ended badly. In 2022, the overheated VC market of 2021 crashed. The fallout is still ongoing, with 2025 expected to be another brutal year of failed startups.Botha is specifically warning about special purpose vehicles (SPVs) a structure that allows a startups investor to sell access to a chunk of their shares to others. But the new investors are not actually buying shares in the startup; they are buying shares of the SPV, often at greatly inflated prices. That means the startups valuation would have to soar just for some of the SPV share owners to break even.SPVs are becoming especially common in AI investing, where some startups are raising astronomical sums. A search of SEC filings finds at least nine SPVs tied to Anthropic since 2024 alone. The company is reportedly in talks to raise another $3.5 billion.Figure AIs attempt to raise $1.5 billion is also reportedly full of SPVs, per the Information. Note that neither company is in Sequoias portfolio. The trend isnt limited to just a few companies. Nearly every major multi-billion AI company has investors offering SPVs. And if a big-name VC firm firm say, Sequoias archrival Andreessen Horowitz is leading the deal, that name alone can lure in buyers. One person involved in the secondaries markets describes SPV-laden deals like this: They are passing the hat on all the deals that cant find enough VC investors and the name firm puts up a tiny amount and these stupid family offices say oh, Andreessen is leading it must be good, even though we know that these are their worst companies that cant raise money from traditional VCs.Bothas message to these would-be investors? Dont buy it.Sequoia did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

  • The hottest AI models, what they do, and how to use them
    techcrunch.com
AI models are being cranked out at a dizzying pace, by everyone from Big Tech companies like Google to startups like OpenAI and Anthropic. Keeping track of the latest ones can be overwhelming.Adding to the confusion is that AI models are often promoted based on industry benchmarks. But these technical metrics often reveal little about how real people and companies actually use them.To cut through the noise, TechCrunch has compiled an overview of the most advanced AI models released since 2024, with details on how to use them and what theyre best for. Well keep this list updated with the latest launches, too. There are literally over a million AI models out there: Hugging Face, for example, hosts over 1.4 million. So this list might miss some models that perform better, in one way or another.AI models released in 2025OpenAIs GPT 4.5 OrionOpenAI calls Orion their largest model to date, touting its strong world knowledge and emotional intelligence. However, it underperforms on certain benchmarks compared to newer reasoning models. Orion is available to subscribers of OpenAIs $200 a month plan.Claude Sonnet 3.7Anthropic says this is the industrys first hybrid reasoning model, because it can both fire off quick answers and really think things through when needed. It also gives users control over how long the model can think for, per Anthropic. Sonnet 3.7 is available to all Claude users, but heavier users will need a $20 a month Pro plan. xAIs Grok 3Grok 3 is the latest flagship model from Elon Musk-founded startup xAI. Its claimed to outperform other leading models on math, science, and coding. The model requires X Premium (which is $50 a month.) After one study found Grok 2 leaned left, Musk pledged to shift Grok more politically neutral but its not yet clear if thats been achieved.OpenAI o3-miniThis is OpenAIs latest reasoning model and is optimized for STEM-related tasks like coding, math, and science. Its not OpenAIs most powerful model but because its smaller, the company says its significantly lower cost. It is available for free but requires a subscription for heavy users.OpenAI Deep ResearchOpenAIs Deep Research is designed for doing in-depth research on a topic with clear citations. This service is only available with ChatGPTs $200 per month Pro subscription. OpenAI recommends it for everything from science to shopping research, but beware that hallucinations remain a problem for AI.Mistral Le ChatMistral has launched app versions of Le Chat, a multimodal AI personal assistant. Mistral claims Le Chat responds faster than any other chatbot. It also has a paid version with up-to-date journalism from the AFP. Tests from Le Monde found Le Chats performance impressive, although it made more errors than ChatGPT.OpenAI OperatorOpenAIs Operator is meant to be a personal intern that can do things independently, like help you buy groceries. It requires a $200 a month ChatGPT Pro subscription. AI agents hold a lot of promise, but theyre still experimental: a Washington Post reviewer says Operator decided on its own to order a dozen eggs for $31, paid with the reviewers credit card.Google Gemini 2.0 Pro ExperimentalGoogle Geminis much-awaited flagship model says it excels at coding and understanding general knowledge. It also has a super-long context window of 2 million tokens, helping users who need to quickly process massive chunks of text. The service requires (at minimum) a Google One AI Premium subscription of $19.99 a month.AI models released in 2024DeepSeek R1This Chinese AI model took Silicon Valley by storm. DeepSeeks R1 performs well on coding and math, while its open source nature means anyone can run it locally. Plus, its free. However, R1 integrates Chinese government censorship and faces rising bans for potentially sending user data back to China.Gemini Deep ResearchDeep Research summarizes Googles search results in a simple and well-cited document. The service is helpful for students and anyone else who needs a quick research summary. However, its quality isnt nearly as good as an actual peer-reviewed paper. Deep Research requires a $19.99 Google One AI Premium subscription. This is the newest and most advanced version of Metas open source Llama AI models. Meta has touted this version as its cheapest and most efficient yet, especially for math, general knowledge, and instruction following. It is free and open source.OpenAI SoraSora is a model that creates realistic videos based on text. While it can generate entire scenes rather than just clips, OpenAI admits that it often generates unrealistic physics. Its currently only available on paid versions of ChatGPT, starting with Plus, which is $20 a month.Alibaba Qwen QwQ-32B-PreviewThis model is one of the few to rival OpenAIs o1 on certain industry benchmarks, excelling in math and coding. Ironically for a reasoning model, it has room for improvement in common sense reasoning, Alibaba says. It also incorporates Chinese government censorship, TechCrunch testing shows. Its free and open source.Anthropics Computer UseClaudes Computer Use is meant to take control of your computer to complete tasks like coding or booking a plane ticket, making it a predecessor of OpenAIs Operator. Computer use, however, remains in beta. Pricing is via API: $0.80 per million tokens of input and $4 per million tokens of output.x.AIs Grok 2Elon Musks AI company, x.AI, has launched an enhanced version of its flagship Grok 2 chatbot it claims is three times faster. Free users are limited to 10 questions every two hours on Grok, while subscribers to Xs Premium and Premium+ plans enjoy higher usage limits. x.AI also launched an image generator, Aurora, that produces highly photorealistic images, including some graphic or violent content.OpenAI o1OpenAIs o1 family is meant to produce better answers by thinking through responses through a hidden reasoning feature. The model excels at coding, math, and safety, OpenAI claims, but has issues deceiving humans, too. Using o1 requires subscribing to ChatGPT Plus, which is $20 a month.Anthropics Claude Sonnet 3.5Claude Sonnet 3.5 is a model Anthropic claims as being best in class. Its become known for its coding capabilities and is considered a tech insiders chatbot of choice.OpenAI GPT 4o-miniOpenAI has touted GPT 4o-mini as its most affordable and fastest model yet thanks to its small size. Its meant to enable a broad range of tasks like powering customer service chatbots. The model is available on ChatGPTs free tier. Its better suited for high-volume simple tasks compared to more complex ones.Cohere Command R+Coheres Command R+ model excels at complex Retrieval-Augmented Generation (or RAG) applications for enterprises. That means it can find and cite specific pieces of information really well. (The inventor of RAG actually works at Cohere.) Still, RAG doesnt fully solve AIs hallucination problem.

  • Pritchard House // 1836
    buildingsofnewengland.com
One of the earliest houses built on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut, is this stately Greek Revival mansion with monumental portico. The house was built in 1836 for Mary Pritchard from plans by great American architect, Alexander Jackson Davis. The mansion is two stories and is constructed of brick and stucco with a distinct two-story portico supported by fluted Corinthian columns. The architect also may have designed a barn at the rear of the house for Ms. Pritchard. Like many other former residences on Hillhouse Avenue, the house was acquired by Yale University, and is now the house of the Provost.
