• The most anticipated games coming out in spring 2025
    www.polygon.com
The good video games train isnt stopping anytime soon. Even though 2025 has already given us Avowed, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Civilization 7, Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, there are a bunch more highly anticipated games coming out in the next few months alone. The cozy genre is getting new entries like Two Point Museum and Wanderstop; Split Fiction will likely reignite Hazelights reign over the couch co-op space; and Assassins Creed Shadows is shaping up to be a winner. Thats not to mention perhaps the most important new title Doom: The Dark Ages, the first Doom game since Doom Eternal in 2020.Dig into the most anticipated games of spring 2025 below. Two Point MuseumRelease date: March 4Available on: Mac, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series XTwo Point Museum, the third installment in the goofy tycoon sim franchise, is a worthy addition to the lineup. Its filled with puns and jokes, just like Two Point Hospital and Two Point Campus both wildly popular and the management strategy required to win is truly satisfying. I found the game a bit too alluring while reviewing it, though, and quickly racked up 20 hours of play. But my museum was sooo beautiful. Zo HannahSplit FictionRelease date: March 6Available on: PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series XThe newest couch co-op game from the developers that made the iconic It Takes Two which has sold 20 million copies as of last December, by the way Split Fiction is highly anticipated for fans of local multiplayer games. In this one, two players take control of a duo of writers who get stuck in some sort of simulation that lands them in a series of sci-fi-looking worlds they must escape. It seems quite reminiscent of It Takes Two, with the main characters initially mistrusting and maybe even disliking one another. But of course, they and you, with your real-life buddy must work together to ultimately prevail. ZHWanderstopRelease date: March 11Available on: PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series XOf all the demos I tried during Februarys Steam Next Fest, Wanderstop is the one I am still thinking about the most. This mindful, relaxing tea shop sim is nestled inside a touching story about the expectations we hold ourselves to, and how those expectations prevent us from changing even if its for the better. Im not alone in my excitement for this title its the newest from writer Davey Wreden, who also wrote The Stanley Parable and The Beginners Guide, so anticipation is high. Even after just an hour of play, its clear Wanderstop is going to be another indie darling for the books. ZHLost Records: Bloom & Rage Tape 2Release date: April 15Available on: PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series XSomething happened to a group of girls in the summer of 1995, and this is a narrative adventure game about the fallout from it 27 years later. From the creators of Life Is Strange comes a new two-part story full of punk rock, betrayal, and supernatural mystery. Its basically Yellowjackets with meaningful dialogue choices and (hopefully) far less cannibalism. Tyler ColpMLB The Show 25Release date: March 18Available on: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series XThe only MLB simulation series available on consoles for over a decade returns with MLB The Show 25, with a trio of cover athletes for the first time and plenty of new player animations and features that promise more realism. The series Road to the Show game mode, which allows you to take control of one players career, now starts in high school and college, and the card-collecting game mode Diamond Dynasty has added a new roguelike mode called Diamond Quest. As a fan of unexpected roguelike modes, I will surely be checking this one out. Pete VolkAssassins Creed ShadowsRelease date: March 20Available on: iPadOS, Mac, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series XIts Assassins Creed, but in feudal Japan. Must we say more? Actually, we must the development and release of Assassins Creed Shadows has been a bit fraught, with several delays and a lot of leaks already, despite being a few weeks away from release. Nonetheless, fans are excited for the title, myself included and if the game does well, itll be a big win for Ubisoft. Early looks at the game hint that it feels like earlier Assassins Creed games. Or, as our guides editor Ari Notis put it, Were so back, yall. ZHAtomfallRelease date: March 27Available on: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series XAtomfall is an upcoming action survival game that has drawn comparisons to the STALKER franchise, as both are set in post-nuclear zones. Atomfall is set in Northern England in an alternate-history 1960s, though, and the protagonist has to manage their health bar and heart rate while uncovering the mystery of a nuclear apocalypse. Fight or flee from mutated creatures, doomsday cultists, military operatives, and rogue robots when the game releases. Cass MarshallInZoiRelease date: March 28 (early access)Available on: PCThe Sims franchise has been the uncontested king of life simulations for years, and InZoi is one of the most promising challengers. Players create characters known as Zoi, customize their homes, and pursue a career. InZois character creator is capable of creating stunningly detailed Zoi. Theres also a custom furniture maker, easy modding, and the ability to share in-game patterns and objects with friends. CMKoiraRelease date: April 1Available on: PlayStation 5, Windows PCIts you and your little puppy against the world in this inky little adventure game. Hunters chase you through forests, animals help guide your way, and statues hold clues for puzzles. Limbo shares a similar aesthetic to Koira, but Studio Tolimas story seems brighter and poised for a conclusion that is far less dark. TCSouth of MidnightRelease date: April 8Available on: Windows PC, Xbox Series XThis is a third-person action game where you could mistake the whine of a demon for the twang of a guitar. Its the Deep South, and the bogs are full of monsters and trauma for you to lure out into the light as Hazel, a young woman searching for a home. South of Midnight has the same surreal atmosphere as the rest of Compulsion Games work, but imbues it with acrobatic traversal mechanics and tight melee combat. TCSkin DeepRelease date: April 30Available on: Windows PCSkin Deep is an immersive sim set on pirate-hijacked spaceships, where the player takes the role of an insurance adjuster sneaking through vents, dispatching guards, and freeing the hardworking cats of MiaoCorp. Youre outnumbered and outgunned, and every time you walk on glass you have to stop and pick the shards out of your feet, John McClane style. Its a compelling challenge dressed up in a silly retro wrapper, and the experience is equal parts gripping and goofy. CMDoom: The Dark AgesRelease date: May 15Available on: PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series XAfter the shock and awe of Doom and Doom Eternal, the franchise is going to the past with Doom: The Dark Ages. The game tells the origin story of the iconic Doom Slayer, but there are still the wild weapons and fast-paced combat fans have come to expect. The Shield Saw is like the iconic Captain America tool, except it can take demons heads off with a mighty swing. Theres a gun called the Skull Crusher, and I feel like you already know what it uses for ammo. The Dark Ages turns the Doom Slayer into an unstoppable tank, too. CMOnimusha 2: Samurais DestinyRelease date: May 23Available on: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox OneThe fast-paced samurai action game series is back, and its starting with an update to an entry from 2002. Onimusha 2 has been catapulted into our modern era with a high-resolution makeover, a new brutal difficulty mode, and new quality-of-life features. The cutthroat combat and demon-infested feudal Japan setting remain as a reminder of a time before Soulslikes were all the rage. Think of it like a tutorial for whats coming with Onimusha: Way of the Sword next year. TCTo a TRelease date: May 28Available on: Windows PC, Xbox Series XHeres another charming game idea from a team led by Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi. Teen is a kid stuck with their arms outstretched in a T-pose in a world not particularly eager to accommodate that. Working with accessibility charity foundation AbleGamers, developer Uvula crafted a game where you help Teen navigate life with a disability by helping them get dressed, brush their teeth, and pet their dog. TCElden Ring NightreignRelease date: May 30Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series XAs if Elden Ring wasnt brutal enough, FromSoftware has made a multiplayer spinoff where youre against the clock and bosses from all of its games have a chance to show up. This three-player co-op adventure all takes place over three nights. You and your squad of heroes will hunt for supplies while the world crumbles around you. Unique hero abilities, like temporary invisibility, and randomized loot make Nightreign feel like a PC mod where all the dials have been turned to 11. TC

  • Best design codes and how to enter design codes in Monster Hunter Wilds
    www.polygon.com
Design codes in Monster Hunter Wilds allow you to load pre-made designs for your hunter during the character creator, formally called the character editor. Its perfect for people like me who cant design a character to save my life or for those who want to load a different kind of template character to edit to their liking. Taking the time to make sure you design a Monster Hunter Wilds character you like is well worth it. Once you start a new save file, you wont be able to access the full character editor again unless you use a limited item called a character edit voucher. This guide will show the best design codes weve found so far, and how to enter character creator codes for the character editor in Monster Hunter Wilds. We also collected some cool character designs we saw online. How to enter character creator codes in Monster Hunter WildsStart a new game or use a character edit voucher to enter the full character editor in Monster Hunter Wilds. Once you are in the character creator, tab to the icon in the menu that looks like a little notepad labeled Design and select the option Download Design. This prompts the pop-up window that allows you to enter the character editor. Now, all you have to do is enter the code. Each code is case-sensitive and uses a string of 12 numbers and letters. The game will automatically load up the character design associated with the code and give you a couple of options. Select the Save Design option if you would like to store this design; it will live under the Save/Load menu nestled under the Design menu. Otherwise, you can just click Change Appearance and your hunter will have its new pre-loaded look. From there, you are free to use the character as is, or you can continue to edit the design to your liking. How to make character creator codes in Monster Hunter WildsUploading a character design and creating a code is a bit more complicated than the menus make it seem. Before you go on, make sure you have at least have one character edit voucher before you begin. Every player gets one free voucher for the character editor at launch, and additional vouchers are sold for as paid add-ons. You wont need to use it, but it basically works like a key that allows you to upload your design. (This is because the game doesnt allow you to upload a design for a character with no save data.)Given all this, here is how Polygon uploaded a character design and created a code to share character in Monster Hunter Wilds.Go create a cool character that you want to share with other people and start a save file with said character. Once you create a save file, you need to return to the main menu and access the character creator using a character edit voucher. If you need help with that, Polygon has a guide on how to change your hunter appearance with vouchers.Once you enter the character editor using a voucher, you can now upload a character design. Just tab to the menu labeled Design and select the Save/Load option. Select an open slot and select the option Upload Design. This will prompt a window that creates a code that will allow other users to load that character. Polygon tested this on PlayStation 5 and we were able to use the voucher to accsess this screen and create a code to share a character. Afterwards, we discarded any changes to the character so we didnt use the voucher, but we successfully shared a character design in this way. In other words, the voucher allows you to accesss the screen to share your character after you create save data, but you dont need to use it if you dont make any changes.Best design codes in Monster Hunter Wilds weve found so farPlayers of Monster Hunter Wilds have already created an online community dedicated to sharing characters on the subreddit MHSliders. If you want a place to browse, that community is a great place to start. However a lot of those creators dont shared codes. Intead, many people have shared screenshots of all the settings people can use to remake the character. This can be helpful if you really want to remake a character that someone else has created, however, it can be super tedious to enter every setting section by section. If you would like some quick and easy codes to load, we got you covered. Here is a short list of some cool character creator codes for Monster Hunter Wilds. At time of publication, the game hasnt even been out a day, so that hasnt given players a lot of time to make new characters. We will update this story once some time passes and people continue to share their creations. With that, here are some cool codes we have found:Reddit user K_808 created Ciri from The Witcher series. The code for this design is: KT9ED6PS8TN4.X user 20per_asterisk created a new preset for people to edit. • Alphabet's Taara chip uses light beams to provide high-speed internet
    www.engadget.com
Alphabet has announced a new development for Taara's technology that could lead to low-cost, high-speed internet connectivity, even in far-flung locations. Taara's general manager, Mahesh Krishnaswamy, has introduced the Taara chip, a silicon photonic chip that uses light to transmit high-speed data through the air. The Taara chip is abut the size of a fingernail, far smaller than the technology the Alphabet division has been using. Taara Lightbridge, which is what its first-generation technology is called, is the size of a traffic light and uses a system of mirrors and sensors to physically steer light to where it needs to go. The new chip uses software instead.Taara is a project under X, Alphabet's moonshot factory. The high speed wireless optical link technology underpinning the project was originally developed for X's Project Loon internet broadcasting balloons. Alphabet pulled the plug on Loon in 2021 and focused on Taara instead, using its technology to beam broadband across the Congo River and the streets of Nairobi. Even years before Loon shut down, Alphabet's X was already toying with the idea of using light to beam internet and tested the technology in India.Taara's technology works by using a "very narrow, invisible light beam to transmit data at speeds as high as 20 gigabits per second, up to distances of 20 kilometers (12.1 miles)." It's like traditional fiber, in the sense that it uses light to carry data, except that light doesn't travel through cables. Instead, Taara's hardware emits beams of light. The beams from two units must be aligned with each other to be able to form a secure link that can transmit data, which is why Lightbridge was fitted with the parts needed to be able to physically steer the light. Taara's new chip doesn't need those components: It contains hundreds of tiny light emitters controlled by software with automatic steeringKrishnaswamy said Taara's light-beaming units will only take days to install instead of the months or years it can take to lay fiber. During tests in the lab, the Taara team was able to transmit data at speeds of 10 Gbps over a distance of one kilometer (0.62 miles) using two of the new chips. They're now looking to improve the chip's capacity and range by creating an "iteration with thousands of [light] emitters." The team expects the chip to be available in 2026.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/alphabets-taara-chip-uses-light-beams-to-provide-high-speed-internet-140040922.html?src=rss

  • Amazon's generative AI vision for Alexa is appealing, but unproven
    www.engadget.com
Amazons long-awaited update to its assistant is almost here. About 18 months after the company first previewed the next-gen Alexa built with generative AI, it unveiled Alexa+, and early access will be available starting in March. Alexa+ will exist alongside the older Alexa and will cost $20 a month, unless you have a Prime membership, which will make it free to use. The new assistant will come with all the modern upgrades that its contemporaries like the redesigned Siri or Gemini offer, like more conversational interaction, better contextual understanding and the ability to summarize complex topics and make suggestions based on your interests. But it does one thing differently, and its the way Amazon purports to integrate with third-party apps and the rest of the internet that could set it apart. At the presentation, vice president of Alexa and Fire TV Daniel Rausch outlined three ways the new assistant can integrate with other services you use. Firstly, it already works with tens of thousands of integrations already available, with Uber, Sonos, Samsung and Xbox being a few of the many logos that were displayed when Rausch said this. Presumably, that means Amazon worked with these partners to get their apps to play nicely with Alexa+ through their APIs.Secondly, for the large swath of the online world that doesnt have apps or the resources to code an API just for Alexa+, the assistant should be able to scour the internet for their website and navigate it on your behalf. During the presentation, Rausch demonstrated how Alexa+ was able to go to the Thumbtack website to hire a professional to fix his oven. Instead of having to whip out a phone or laptop to click through menus himself, Rausch could just verbally tell Alexa+ what he needed and what times he was available, and the AI did the rest.Sam Rutherford for Engadget This example in particular struck me as very similar to Googles restaurant-reservation system Duplex, which, since way back in 2018, could call businesses on your behalf to book a table. All you had to do was tell Google what date and times you were considering, how many people were in your party and it would make the call for you, even speaking in a human-sounding voice to the restaurant. The way Alexa+ would click around websites on your behalf seems like Duplex on steroids. Finally, Alexa+ can work with the AI agents on other sites, so you can talk to just one assistant instead of dozens of chatbots. In the presentation, Rausch got Alexa+ to work with the AI music generator Suno to come up with a country-style song about bodega cats. After the companys presentation, I spoke with Rausch to get more clarity on how Alexa+ will work with the rest of the online world. For one, I wanted to know for sure if that third method would work with customer service chatbots from companies like Capital One, United Airlines and more. While Rausch said that he had no details to share on specific names or services, he did confirm that the SDK is all about integrations like that, saying its for people to use Alexa to connect with agents on their behalf to complete tasks.Rausch is aware that any friction at all in the adoption and setup process can turn people away. To that end, upgrading to Alexa+ should not require any additional sign-ins or authentication. You should be able to have all your connected appliances, security cameras and home routines carry over without any effort. The reason that customers love Alexa is it takes away all the complexity, Rausch said. People dont need to remember the brand of the WeMo plug they bought, for example, to be able to tell Alexa to turn off a lamp. We would never take that away, he said. When youre adding new services after upgrading to Alexa+, Rausch said youll either do so in the ways that you do it today or that itll get even easier, since Alexa can walk you through those setups in many more cases.Sam Rutherford for Engadget According to Rausch, instead of having to dig around in the Alexa app, you just say Alexa, I want to set up a streaming account with Hulu' or something. Youll be presented with a QR code on an Echo device with a screen to facilitate that, and the assistant should guide users along the way.We like to say Alexa is an expert, and now an expert on herself.Amazon isn't the only company that has made its assistant perform tech support for users. This approach is very similar to how Siri can teach you how to, say, shoot a video in Cinematic mode or create a Genmoji. Where better to get help about a product youre using than the product itself? Why make me go to a different place for information? From a customer experience perspective, customers just want the thing done, Rausch said. They dont have to be responsible or care about any of these things, right? He believes people just want the plumber or a reservation booked, and dont want to fuss around with websites and phone calls.People do want their digital assistant to be helpful and easy to use, but isnt it equally important that these AI services are accurate and reliable? When I asked Rausch how Amazon worked around the tendency of generative AI to hallucinate and sometimes spread misinformation, he said I actually think in the industry, theres been a mistake of thinking a model is a product. He also said LLMs are at the foundation of the architecture, but theyre not the only thing answering the question. In other words, Alexa+ is using a combination of Amazons knowledge graphs, reliable sources on the internet and partnerships with authoritative outlets. Other products will simply give you an answer out of the LLM. If you're asking for an authoritative answer, that's not actually sometimes the way to get one. and I think that's what you're highlighting, he said.Rausch added that Amazon has taken great care with Alexa. Will it make mistakes? Every piece of software makes mistakes, he said. But were working hard to ground it in knowledge.Ive yet to try out Alexa+ for myself, and everything weve seen so far has been in highly controlled demos, so its hard to tell what real world performance will be like. But if the new Alexa is truly able to work with third-party services in a way thats seamless and effective, it would not only bring Amazon back into the consumer AI race, but could possibly give it an advantage over the likes of Google, Apple and OpenAI. Considering Amazon really brought the idea of a virtual assistant into homes around the world, this could also have an impact that goes beyond the tech-savvy users of todays AI services. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/amazons-generative-ai-vision-for-alexa-is-appealing-but-unproven-140014416.html?src=rss

  • Builder unsold inventory jumps to 2009 levels: Housing markets where buyers can find deals
    www.fastcompany.com
Want more housing market stories from Lance LambertsResiClubin your inbox?Subscribeto theResiClubnewsletter.Since the pandemic housing boom fizzled out, the number of unsold completed U.S. new single-family homes has been rising. Heres a look at the recent historical numbers for January: January 2018: 63,000January 2019: 76,000January 2020: 76,000January 2021: 40,000January 2022: 32,000January 2023: 68,000January 2024: 83,000January 2025: 115,000The January figure (115,000 unsold completed new homes) that recently published is the highest level since July 2009 (126,000). Lets take a closer look at the data to better understand what this could mean.To put the number of unsold completed new single-family homes into historic context, ResiClub created a new index: ResiClubs Finished Homes Supply Index. The index is one simple calculation: The number of unsold completed U.S. new single-family homes divided by the annualized rate of U.S. single-family housing starts.A higher index score indicates a softer national new construction market with greater supply slack, while a lower index score signifies a tighter new construction market with less supply slack.Big picture: The index shows that theres more new construction slack in the 2025 housing market as compared to the 2023 and 2024 markets; however, its still far less slack than the 2008 housing bust.In housing markets and builder communities where unsold completed inventory gets too high, local homebuilders could (and some already have) turn to get bigger affordability adjustments (i.e., bigger incentives or even outright price cuts). That raises the question: Where is this unsold new home inventory located? Where can buyers find deals? While the U.S. Census Bureau doesnt specify the locations of unsold completed single-family new construction, its safe to assume that most of it is in the South, based on where total active housing inventory for sale is increasing and where homebuilders are completing the most homes (see chart below). As ResiClub has documented, both active resale and new homes for sale remain the most limited across huge swaths of the Midwest, Northeast, and Southern California. Thats likely where youll find the least unsold completed new constructionand where builders have greater pricing power. In contrast, active housing inventory for sale has grown the most in the Gulf region, including housing markets like Tampa, Punta Gorda, and San Antonio. These areas saw major price surges during the pandemic housing boom, with home price growth outpacing local income levels. As pandemic-driven migration slowed and mortgage rates rose, markets like Tampa and Austin faced challenges, relying on local income levels to support frothy home prices. This softening trend is further compounded by an abundance of new home supply in the Sun Belt. Builders are often willing to lower prices or offer affordability incentives to maintain sales, which also has a cooling effect on the resale market. Some buyers, who would have previously considered existing homes, are now opting for new homes with more favorable deals. The number of builders unsold inventory homes remains above the seasonal norm, wrote Dillan Krieg, a research analyst at John Burns Research and Consulting on LinkedIn. Weve been tracking this trend for a while as builders rely on speculative starts to capture buyers. However, some builders are facing pricing pressureespecially in key Florida and Texas markets, where resale supply is also well above pre-COVID norms.

  • How foreign workers helped spur Spains rapid economic growth
    www.fastcompany.com
Inside a cavernous production plant in Spain, people from 62 nationalities work side by side to keep a food company humming as millions of legs of ham travel on hooks along conveyor belts.Foreign workers have helped to make Spains economy the envy of the industrialized world, even as anti-immigration sentiments grow elsewhere in Europe and in the United States.Bonrea would not be possible if it werent for the people from other countries who have come here to work. We should be eternally grateful to them, the companys head of human resources, Xavier Moreno, told the Associated Press during a recent visit.Tapping into foreign labor helped Spains economy grow by about 3% last year, smashing the eurozone average of 0.8%, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. That also beat the U.S. growth rate of 2.8%, according to OECD projected figures, where President Donald Trump has pledged to close borders anddeport immigrantswho are in the country illegally.Spains ministry for social security and migration says 45% of all jobs created since 2022 have been filled by around half a million new foreign-born workers. Nearly 3 million foreigners now represent 13% of the countrys workforce. We had two ways to deal with the challenge, the minister, Elma Saiz, told the AP. That Spain be a closed and poor country or an open and prosperous one.Pedro Aznar, professor of economics with the Esade Business School in Barcelona, said the influx of foreign workers has helped Spain fare far better than Germany, the traditional motor of Europes economy, whosemanufacturing industry is in crisis.Spain is driven by services, in particular itsbuoyant tourism sector. Foreigners do typically lower-wage jobs that many Spaniards dont want. And while Spain takes in fewer asylum-seekers than other European countries, its in the rare position to attract millions of economic migrants from Latin America who swiftly incorporate into Spains job market and social fabric thanks to the common language.Practically all of Spains population growth since the COVID-19 pandemic is due to immigration, with 1.1 million people arriving in 2022, according to the Bank of Spain. It credits the newcomers with sustaining the aging countrys social security systema challenge common in other European nations. The bank said 85% of the 433,000 people who found a job last year between January and September were foreign-born.Bucking the anti-migration trendAcross Europe, the rise of anti-migrant sentiment has spurred far-right political parties. Spain also has seen the rise of anti-migration political forces that focus on unauthorized migration from Africa and Islamic countries, but they havent been able to impose their narrative as deeply.Mohamed Es-Saile, 38, arrived from Morocco illegally when he was 16, crossing into Spains north African exclave of Ceuta. He now works legally as an electrician and repairman at bonrea.I dont feel any hate toward migrants here, Es-Saile said. From my point of view, a person (from abroad) can adapt to situations in a new country, even sometimes better than people from that country.Latin Americans have made up the bulk of immigrants who arrived legally. According to the most recent census, more than 4 million Latin American immigrants were living in Spain legally in 2023.Vctor Razuri was brought over by bonrea from Peru last year as a mechanic and electrician. The 41-year-old said he has had little problem adapting. In Peru, you dont see many people from other parts of the world. When I got here, I was working with people from Ukraine, from Morocco, and with a few other people from Latin America, he said. It was a little tough at first, but I think I have adapted. To help integrate newcomers, bonrea offers classes in Spanish and Catalan, help with work permits, and finding homes and schools. Representatives of workers from different countries meet regularly to discuss issues related to cultural differences. Our future prosperitySocialistPrime Minister Pedro Snchezhas defended legal migration, drawing attention to its economic benefits. Spain added an estimated 458,000 authorized immigrants last year, according to the National Statistics Institute. While 31% come from other EU countries, leading countries of origin also include Morocco, Colombia, Venezuela, China, Peru, and Ukraine.New arrivals often take service jobs, construction, farming, fishing, and home care and cleaning.Welcoming those who come here looking for a better life is not just an obligation, it is also an essential step to guaranteeing our future prosperity, Snchez told Parliament in October. An aging Spain requires workersSocial changes in Spain have opened the job market for newcomers without creating dramatic social tensions, despite chronic high unemployment at 10.6%.The Bank of Spain estimates that an aging Spain will need 30 million working-age immigrants over the next 30 years to sustain the balance between workers and retirees-plus-children.In Barcelona, caf owner Jordi Ortiz said there is no way he could keep his business going without his staff of mostly Latin Americans. It is basically 80% of people from abroad, 20% from here, Ortiz said. Spaniards just dont want to work in the service sector.Emily Soto, originally from the Dominican Republic, serves tables at the cafe. She and her family emigrated in 1998. Since then, things have changed. When I got here there was nobody else from my country, I mean we could count them on our fingers, Soto said. • This Fish Market Merges Sustainability and Innovation With The Largest Timber Roof in the Southern Hemisphere
    www.yankodesign.com
Since its unveiling in 2020, the Sydney Fish Market is nearing completion, boasting an impressive timber roof crafted to mimic the appearance of fish scales and weighing a substantial 2,500 tons. This architectural marvel is the brainchild of the Danish studio 3XN, working in partnership with BVN, GXN Innovation, and Aspect Studios. The project forms a key component of a broader initiative aimed at revitalizing Blackwattle Bay, infusing new life and vibrancy into this part of the city.Designer: 3Xn, BVN, GXN Innovation, & Aspect StudiosThe roof stands out as the most impressive feature of the Sydney Fish Market. It spans an impressive length of 200 meters (656 feet), and its intricate structure comprises 594 glulam (glued laminated wood) roof beams. The longest of these beams extends up to 32 meters (104 feet), creating a sturdy framework topped with aluminum panels designed to resemble fish scales. Installing this architectural innovation was no easy task. Over the years, the team used three cranes, each weighing as much as 17 passenger cars, into their precise positions. The roof incorporates integrated solar panels, significantly reducing the buildings reliance on the grid for electricity. A rainwater collection system supports irrigation needs, enhancing the buildings sustainability. The roof also features skylights that allow indirect sunlight to illuminate the interiors upper levels, creating a naturally bright and inviting space. Multiplex, the construction company behind the project, declares it the largest roof of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, highlighting its impressive design and engineering achievements. As the Sydney Fish Market approaches the final stages of its construction, a few tasks still need to be completed before it can open its doors to the public. The roof still needs some finishing touches, including essential waterproofing that will be completed in the upcoming weeks. The interior still needs some work to be done, and it will be filled with natural light, owing to the skylights, and the stunning transparent facade composed of aluminum and glass, complemented by glazed louvers. This combination enhances the buildings aesthetic appeal but also ensures a bright and welcoming atmosphere inside. The interior space is marked by an open and flexible layout designed to accommodate a variety of functions and activities. On the outside, the market is surrounded by public plazas, inviting gatherings and community interactions in the adjacent areas. The project is moving towards completion and will open in the coming months, serving as a vibrant addition to the citys architectural landscape and a bustling hub for locals and visitors. This building will serve many functions when it is completed: a vibrant fish market, an attractive amenity for the city, a cultural destination, an urban connector, and an inspiring icon along the world-renowned Sydney Harbour, said Kim Herforth Nielsen, Founding Partner and Creative Director, 3XN.The post This Fish Market Merges Sustainability and Innovation With The Largest Timber Roof in the Southern Hemisphere first appeared on Yanko Design.
