• Monster Hunter Wilds Players Are Trying To See If Fixing a Typo Will Give Them a Performance Bump
    www.ign.com
Since launch, PC players of Monster Hunter Wilds have been tinkering with the game, working to optimize their performance and settings. As it turns out, some even dug all the way into the config files and found a typo, which they subsequently tested to see if that could bump up their numbers. As discovered on Steam over the weekend (thanks, Kotaku), inside the config file of Monster Hunter Wilds, there's a line where "Resolution" is spelled "Resoltuion". According to the original Steam poster, fixing the misspelled word gave them a "perfomance boost," though they also said it made their processor temperature "jump significantly," from 50 degrees Celsius to 70.A Reddit thread spun up too, where the original poster claimed to get a mild performance bump from around 120 FPS with Frame Gen to around 140. "Again, maybe a coincidence but I have no idea," the OP said. "Needs more testing. I'm just happy to gain FPS somehow."Now, several repliers have commented with some words of caution and reason: adjusting this variable could be doing something completely different. "Renaming could just be setting whatever it is to a default which is lower than whatever it was, hence the perfomance increase," one Reddit commenter said.Another user said it's a placebo. The executable contains the same typo, so it actually refers to a specific node. "By 'fixing' the typo, that makes the game not find this one specific config key/value, so perhaps [its] defaulting to some other value," the responder said. There are, of course, posts disputing the placebo effect. Without official confirmation from Capcom, this does seem like a red herring. And it's best to advise caution when diving into the config files or other parts of the critical game files.Players' avid search for what fixing the typo does, however, indicates the fervor with which Monster Hunter Wilds players are hunting for performance bumps. The PC optimization has been a point of discussion for Monster Hunter Wilds players, up to the point that even social posts about an upcoming fix for a progression-breaking bug are garnering responses asking for optimization fixes.PC players continue to flood into Monster Hunter Wilds though, as Capcom's latest has been a record-breaking entry for both the series and the Steam storefront. With this much popularity, hopefully we see some fine-tuning in the weeks and months ahead, typo or not. A title update for Monster Hunter Wilds is expected in April, which is due to add a new endgame area to gather, as well as more monster hunting action for players to embark on.To help get your Monster Hunter Wilds adventure started, take a look at what Monster Hunter Wilds doesnt tell you, and a guide to all 14 weapon types in the game. Weve also got a detailed Monster Hunter Wilds walkthrough in progress, a Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer guide to explain how to play with friends, and if youve played one of the open betas, heres how to transfer your Monster Hunter Wilds Beta character over.IGNs Monster Hunter Wilds review returned an 8/10. We said: Monster Hunter Wilds continues to smooth off the rougher corners of the series in smart ways, making for some extremely fun fights but also lacking any real challenge.Eric is a freelance writer for IGN.

  • As Measles Outbreak Spreads, RFK Jr. Reverses Message and Urges Vaccination
    futurism.com
Image by Jim Watson / AFP via Getty / FuturismLongtime vaccine hater Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. appears to be walking back his own skepticism amid a significant measles outbreak spanning states including Texas, California, New Jersey, and more.In an op-ed for Fox News yes, the same media giant that's spent years fearmongering about vaccines the new Health and Human Services secretary said it was "crucial" that everyone gets the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine after a school-aged child in the Longhorn State became the "first measles-related fatality in the United States in over a decade."The allegedly brainwormed health secretary didn't mention that the deceased child wasn't vaccinated against MMR or that last week, when asked about that child's death, he claimed that measles outbreaks are "not unusual.""We have measles outbreaks every year," the political scion said during his first-ever meeting of cabinet secretaries. "There are two people who have died, but we are watching it."It's unclear whether Kennedy simply misspoke when referring to an additional measles death or if he was aware of something we're not. What is clear, however, is that he's done an about-face in the days since that flippant remark and that his own vaccine skepticism is glaringly absent from his more recent messaging about MMR.When appearing before the Senate Finance Committee for his confirmation hearings in January, RFK Jr. attempted to distance himself from the "antivax" label by noting that all of his children were vaccinated. The new HHS secretary conveniently forgot to mention that he previously claimed to regret getting his kids vaccinated and that he used to be chairman of Children's Health Defense, an influential anti-vaccine nonprofit that got kicked off of Instagram and Facebook in 2022 for spreading medical disinformation."What would I do if I could go back in time and I could avoid giving my children the vaccines that I gave them?" Kennedy said in a 2020 podcast appearance on behalf of Children's Health Defense. "I would do anything for that. I would pay anything to be able to do that."Despite paying lip service to the "crucial" nature of vaccines to stop the spread of the highly contagious measles disease, the HHS secretary let the mask slip momentarily in his op-ed."The decision to vaccinate," Kennedy wrote forFox, "is a personal one."Share This Article

  • Tesla Just Got Even More Bad News
    futurism.com
Tesla's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year isn't letting up.As Bloomberg reports, the electric vehicle maker's sales numbers are still in freefall, recording the worst sales month in years in France, one of its biggest EV markets in Europe. According to French industry association Plateforme Automobile, Tesla only registered 2,395 vehicles in February, a 26 percent drop compared to the same period last year. Data from Norway, Denmark and Sweden shows even greater slides and more hits may be incoming, because numbers from the major markets of Germany and the UK aren't in yet for February.Overall, Tesla's sales have fallen off a cliff in Europe, dropping 45 percent in January compared to last year. Consequently, the carmaker's stock has also been takinga beating, and is down almost 23 percent over the past month (thoughit's still up a considerable 39 percent since September). At the center of the EV maker's slow demise is its polarizing CEO Elon Musk, who's been busy ransacking the federal government in the United States on behalf of his so-called Department of Government Efficiency. His racist leanings, which were highlighted by some horrifying commentary and two Nazi salutes during Trump's inauguration celebration, has led to a surge in anti-Musk sentiment, inspiring vandalism and protest aimed at Tesla dealerships across the globe.Tesla owners are getting increasingly fed up, saying they're disgusted by Musk's behavior.Musk has lost more than a whopping $100 billion in his net worth since mid-December, highlighting just how disastrous Tesla's stock sell-off has been for his bottom line.Even Tesla investors are getting jittersfrom Musk's chaotic gutting of the federal government, accusing him of abandoning the carmaker.Musk's abhorrent behavior is converging with a major supply chain shakeup, with the company setting up production lines for a new model, according to Bloomberg. And surging competition, particularly from China, could also be hurting Tesla where it counts. In short, even now that Musk has accumulated a terrifying amount of influence in Washington, DC, his EV maker is struggling. Whether his efforts to systemically cut down regulations that could stand in his way of turning Tesla into a robotaxi service company will pay off remains to be seen. But if there's one certainty, it's that Tesla's customers across the world are getting fed up of his antics and don't want anything to do with him or his automaker.Share This Article

  • Hackers Exploit AWS Misconfigurations to Launch Phishing Attacks via SES and WorkMail
    thehackernews.com
Mar 03, 2025Ravie LakshmananCloud Security / Email SecurityThreat actors are targeting Amazon Web Services (AWS) environments to push out phishing campaigns to unsuspecting targets, according to findings from Palo Alto Networks Unit 42.The cybersecurity company is tracking the activity cluster under the name TGR-UNK-0011 (short for a threat group with unknown motivation), which it said overlaps with a group known as JavaGhost. TGR-UNK-0011 is known to be active since 2019."The group focused historically on defacing websites," security researcher Margaret Kelley said. "In 2022, they pivoted to sending out phishing emails for financial gain."It's worth noting that these attacks do not exploit any vulnerability in AWS. Rather, the threat actors take advantage of misconfigurations in victims' environments that expose their AWS access keys in order to send phishing messages by abusing Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) and WorkMail services. In doing so, the modus operandi offers the benefit of not having to host or pay for their own infrastructure to carry out the malicious activity. What's more, it enables the threat actor's phishing messages to sidestep email protections since the digital missives originate from a known entity from which the target organization has previously received emails."JavaGhost obtained exposed long-term access keys associated with identity and access management (IAM) users that allowed them to gain initial access to an AWS environment via the command-line interface (CLI)," Kelley explained. "Between 2022-24, the group evolved their tactics to more advanced defense evasion techniques that attempt to obfuscate identities in the CloudTrail logs. This tactic has historically been exploited by Scattered Spider."Once access to the organization's AWS account is confirmed, the attackers are known to generate temporary credentials and a login URL to allow console access. This, Unit 42 noted, grants them the ability to obfuscate their identity and gain visibility into the resources within the AWS account.Subsequently, the group has been observed utilizing SES and WorkMail to establish the phishing infrastructure, creating new SES and WorkMail users, and setting up new SMTP credentials to send email messages."Throughout the time frame of the attacks, JavaGhost creates various IAM users, some they use during their attacks and others that they never use," Kelley said. "The unused IAM users seem to serve as long-term persistence mechanisms."Another notable aspect of the threat actor's modus operandi concerns the creation of a new IAM role with a trust policy attached, thereby permitting them to access the organization's AWS account from another AWS account under their control."The group continues to leave the same calling card in the middle of their attack by creating new Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) security groups named Java_Ghost, with the group description 'We Are There But Not Visible,'" Unit 42 concluded."These security groups do not contain any security rules and the group typically makes no attempt to attach these security groups to any resources. The creation of the security groups appear in the CloudTrail logs in the CreateSecurityGroup events."Found this article interesting?
