  • It's time to admit Diablo 4 has a treasure goblin problem
    www.eurogamer.net
It's time to admit Diablo 4 has a treasure goblin problemA greed.Image credit: Blizzard Feature by Robert Purchese Associate Editor Published on March 4, 2025 I can't believe I'm about to complain about treasure goblins in Diablo 4. Why would anyone mind them? They are loot on legs: twisted little demons who spew fountains of treasure if you catch them and kill them before they conjure a portal and run away. Downing one is like downing a boss, in terms of the loot that drops from them - it positively erupts - except you don't have to run through a dungeon to find them and they don't fight back. They're suddenly just there, in front of you, prompting a mad rush of greed as you drop everything to chase them down.Treasure goblins are how I got sucked back into Diablo 4 over Christmas. The whole game was giddy with them. Blizzard, clearly playing on their Santa Claus-like vibe - treasure goblins are small spindly demons that lug sacks of goodies around - decided not only to double the amount of treasure goblins that spawned in Diablo 4 but also increase their spawn rate, meaning suddenly these things were everywhere. And not only that but killing them contributed towards a collaborative kill-count which rewarded you, at milestones, with caches containing even more loot.Reader, I gorged. I stuffed my bags with so many oranges - my colloquial term for legendaries (and fancy loot) - I couldn't discern between them and didn't really care. Drops that were once relatively rare became so commonplace my dopamine levels barely registered them. I think I salvaged most without even looking. And I couldn't stop myself - I couldn't stop playing. I was like a child in a frenzy around the Christmas tree, ripping at the game and goblins with a delirious desire for more. I was frankly glad when sensible January rolled around.Watch on YouTubeBut this morning I read, with rising levels of excitement, that Blizzard plans to do it again. A new March of the Goblins event is scheduled to begin today, 4th March and it will multiply the amount of goblins in the land yet again. It will even go a step further and not only have packs of goblins roaming the land - and does that mean they'll appear in groups larger than two?! - and a meta-event offering additional rewards for killing them, but also new variant goblin types. There's a goblin that splits into yet more goblins when it dies, like a slime; there are gold-themed, crafting material-themed, Obol-themedand gem/rune/prism-themed goblins, that spew those kinds of useful things; and there's - of course - a goblin boss, called Fancy Old Fedric, who's going to be hard to find but has the rarest treasures of all: Mythic Unique items (and the hard-to-come-by Resplendent Spark crafting resource). For one more week, it'll be treasure goblin overload. On the one hand, I'm all in. Blizzard knows how to entice a player of a loot-driven game back in, and I applaud the ridiculous abundance of it all. One of my favourite memories in all of Diablo 3 was finding myself inside the treasure goblins' realm one day, after stepping through one of their portals and unexpectedly being whisked somewhere else. I think I fought a boss called Greed there, who appropriately detonated in an explosion of loot and gold when killed. It was marvellous. And I also appreciate the effort Blizzard is putting into making the world of Diablo 4 feel alive and as though there's something always going on there - it does feel that way. But I'm starting to worry that it's leaning on the treasure goblins too much. Look at this! This is from the Sleigh Ride to Hell festive treasure goblin event. It's the statue where you picked up special caches of even more loot for killing treasure goblins, which already spew loot. Look how much they give! And the quality of it! | Image credit: Eurogamer / Blizzard A couple of the new treasure goblin types. | Image credit: BlizzardWe've had this March of the Goblins event a couple of times before (albeit neither time in March, funnily enough), which means that in one-and-a-half years since the game came out, we've had - if you count the Christmas bonanza - four treasure goblin overloads. That's quite a lot. Clearly people like it, but it'll be a case of diminishing rewards if Blizzard reaches for the goblin sack each time. Incidentally, is it a coincidence that this March of the Goblins event appeared just as Diablo boss Rod Fergusson announced a delay to Season 8 for the game? It'd be interesting to hear if it was always part of the plan. What's more, the problem with these goblin events is they make the normal operation of the game seem dull by comparison. I remember logging into the game after the Christmas treasure goblin event - cheerily named Sleigh Ride to Hell by the way - and finding it felt less fulfilling to play. It was as though my threshold for entertainment from Diablo 4 had risen and I logged off afterwards and didn't touch the game for weeks. I didn't see the point. See? I really am like a child spoiled at Christmas. There's also something to be said for loot scarcity. In upping the amounts you find, you start to devalue the sense of specialness in what you do find. Is this why Blizzard added new tiers of items in Uniques, and then Mythic Uniques? What happens when it starts to offer those more frequently and devalue them? What's that old adage about too much of a good thing never being enough? Perhaps it's time Blizzard found a different treat to reach for.

  • Monster Hunter Wilds first patch fixes that story progression bug, and introduces performance updates that should hopefully address some of your worries about how it runs on PC
    www.vg247.com
Will It?Monster Hunter Wilds first patch fixes that story progression bug, and introduces performance updates that should hopefully address some of your worries about how it runs on PCMonster Hunter Wilds has just received a new update that fixes a nasty bug that prevented players from being able to make progress in the campaign.Image credit: Capcom News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on March 4, 2025 Capcom has released a fresh new patch for Monster Hunter Wilds across all platforms. This is a smaller hotfix, but it nonetheless comes with a couple of welcome fixes. The biggest one, of course, is a fix for the Chapter 5-2 bug that sometimes prevented an NPC from spawning, making it impossible for players to make progress. This hotfix also brings various other smaller tweaks, though we do hope a bigger patch is on the way to address the larger issues players have been having with the game.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Patch 1.000.04.00 is now available to download. Apart fro the Chapter 5-2 progression bug thats been fixed, the patch also fixes a different bug that prevented players from being able to access the Grill a Meal, and Ingredient Center features, despite meeting the story progress requirements.A different bug would sometimes cause the ever-important Monster Field Guide to be inaccessible, and that has now been fixed, too. Speaking of access, the patch corrects the issue that would sometimes send players falling through the map on their way to Azuz in the Chapter 2-1 mission Toward Fervent Fields. If youve been crafting a lot of weapons at the Smithy, you may have noticed that the game sometimes insists on showing you all the crafting tutorials youve previously seen. That has now been fixed. In terms of gameplay fixes, the hotfix corrects an issue with the lances Power Guard that, in some cases, made the weapon flash red despite the effect not having been activated. Shifting to the Insect Glaive, when successfully performing an Offset Attack with Descending Slash, a nasty bug would sometimes cause your character to freeze and be unable to move - that has now also been fixed. Did you make it there, yet? | Image credit: Capcom/VG247Capcom also fixed an issue that caused certain weapon skills to be activated when using a mantle, which didnt make sense (though I am sure some of us liked the bonus). Finally, the patch addressed an issue that made it so certain weapon effects were always on when using certain skills, such as Peak Performance, and Self-Improvement.Outside of these specific fixes, the update brings some stability and performance enhancements, as well as some crash fixes. Monster Hunter Wilds does suffer from major performance issues on PC, which has caused it to take a hit in user sentiment on Steam, despite being one of the most popular games right now. Were expecting a long tail of patches for the game, however, especially now that its officially Capcoms fastest-selling game ever, with over 8 million copies sold in just three days.Be sure to catch up on our extensive Monster Hunter Wilds guides, which will teach you so much the game keeps from you. They will also help you find those pesky Endemic Life creatures, learn how to spot the crafting materials you want in the world, and much more.

  • Desperate to play Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam Deck? Good luck, but there is now a mod that attempts to help you get "the little engine that shouldn't" chugging
    www.vg247.com
Worth A Shot?Desperate to play Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam Deck? Good luck, but there is now a mod that attempts to help you get "the little engine that shouldn't" chugging"Welcome back to the PSP/3DS days, folks."Image credit: Capcom News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 4, 2025 As you'd expect for a game that's been afflicted with a bunch of teething troubles and technical issues on proper PCs to this point, trying to run Monster Hunter Wilds on your Steam Deck isn't a walk in the park.In fact, it's a stroll that you'll probably find results in some crashes, a frame rate that makes monster hunting pretty impossible, and horrible graphics. Fret not, though, there's now a config file on Nexus Mods designed to help you try and get it running in non-terrible fashion, put together by someone who openly says they don't reccomend playing Wilds on the Deck.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Enter 'The Little Engine that Shouldn't - Steam Deck config (OLED)' by modder PFCacklefanny - which is an early user handle of the year frontrunner. They've put together a file that aims to help you actually get the 30FPS that most folks trying to play Wilds on deck so far have struggled to hit. Will it work? Well, they write that: "You should be able to hold a solid 30FPS throughout the game with input lag more or less similar to playing the game via a streaming app. You can also up your framerate cap to 45 - it won't hit 45 most of the time, but it will look a bit smoother in most areas compared to 30." That said, very much still expect "hiccups and dips now and then", with "the middle of the desert where the packs roam" being a hotspot."Fighting multiple large monsters doesn't appear to significantly impact performance, though thanks to the game being a bit of a mess you will get some stuttering/framegen wonkiness when you swing the camera around a lot," PFCacklefanny continues, "I've been wandering around in the desert, forest, ice caves, and oil basin and haven't come across anything severe thus far."If that bit's got you excited though, I'd, er, not be. "Set your expectations - it's gonna look like ass but it plays good enough," the modder adds, "Welcome back to the PSP/3DS days, folks. Overall, I would not recommend buying Wilds for the Steam Deck alone. The config isn't a silver bullet, just a thing for folks who like to experiment and absolute MonHun diehards such as myself."They also admit they've not reached the late stages of the game to test those, or tried playing as a gun-wielder, so if you're looking to be Wilds' top 360 no-scope Steam Deck monster hunter, you're venturing into the complete unknown. So, give it a go, or just don't, saving yourself from having seen this very good game at its visual and performance dogshittery zenith. If you're after some help with things related to actually playing Wilds rather than just running it on a device that's lacking the beef you really need to do so, you can check out the array of helpful guides and tips we've got for it, so you can get the most out of your fully clothed (sigh) monster hunting.

  • Cino cracks bill-splitting at the moment of payment, raises seed round
    techcrunch.com
While Venmo or Splitwise are effectively debt collector tools, which require one person to pay a full bill and then request funds from others, neither have cracked bill-splitting at the moment of payment. European startup Cino, which has come up with just such a product, has now raised 3.5m in a Seed funding round led by Londons Balderton Capital. The real-time shared payment app allows a group to split the bill and pay their share directly from whatever bank account or wallet they choose. After emerging from Tallinn, Estonia, and operating in continental Europe since 2023, Cino will now use the funding to expand to the U.K.Led by CEO Elena Churilova (formerly of Bumble and Booking.com) and COO Lina Saleh (ex-Cornell University), Cino appears to be making waves among Gen Z, who dislike financial awkwardness and among whom joint bank accounts for payment of things like shared household bills are going the way of the dinosaur. To use Cino, users connect their card to themobileapp where they get a virtual card. They can then join shared payment groups where they set adjustable custom split ratios, like those for a restaurant bill. Any group member can pay for anything and everyones share is automatically deducted at checkout, said the company. Image Credits:CinoAll payments appear transparently in the group feed, and users can join or leave payment groups at any time.Currently, all users ned to be a Cino user for the app to work, but the company is also building a new feature where you can directly join through Apple Pay or Google Pay.Cino claims to have 100% month-over-month growth in markets like Finland and Italy, and says its customers use the app 17 times a month, on average, spending up to 3,000.The way to set it up is similar to how WhatsApp works, explained Elena Churilova, Cinas co-founder and CEO ofCino, over a call with TechCrunch. You just create groups, and then we issue virtual cards. You can add people, remove people from that virtual card, and also change the split ratio.Cinos journey began when Churilova was working at Bumble, and started splitting expenses with colleagues: I tried every single tool out there possible to figure out how to make my weekends not into accounting exercises, she said. Then I just had this like moment of thinking, like, Why is no one building a way to pay together? The app also leverages the network effect to scale, as every new Cino user can invite 2-4 others for free within their first six months of joining. For too long, people have accepted standard bill-splitting, debt tracking, and repayment requests as the only way to manage shared expenses simply because there was no alternative, Cino investor Greta Anderson at Balderton Capital said in a statement. Cinos viral growth demonstrates that there is an alternative which users love.Connect Ventures and Tera Ventures also participated in this round, alongside angels, including Barney Hussey-Yeo (founder of Cleo).
