• New research aims to address unmet needs following weight loss surgeries

This advertising content was produced by Amylyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and does not reflect the opinions or point of view of Vox Media or Vox Creative. This content is intended for U.S. audiences only.In the United States, more than 100 million adults, or approximately 40 percent of the adult population, have obesity and for decades obesity prevalence has steadily climbed. Obesity is a chronic condition that increases the risk of other chronic and life-threatening conditions like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. People with obesity also experience high rates of weight stigma or stereotyping, mistreatment, and social devaluation related to body weight. For people with obesity, bariatric surgery may be an option. Bariatric surgery can result in significant weight loss and the improvement, prevention, or resolution of many related diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. Bariatric surgery has also been shown to produce major reductions in clinical morbidities such as cardiovascular events, and may reduce long-term mortality risk in obese individuals by as much as 40 percent. Over the past 10 years, about two million people living in the U.S. have undergone the two most common types of bariatric surgery, which include sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, with more than 200,000 new procedures performed every year. In addition to the established clinical benefits of bariatric surgery, the general safety of bariatric surgery is also well-established, with complication rates in line with common surgical procedures such as minimally invasive gallbladder removal. However, in a rare subset of people, a potentially debilitating condition called post-bariatric hypoglycemia may present in the years following bariatric surgery.Understanding post-bariatric hypoglycemiaPost-bariatric hypoglycemia, or PBH, is a condition that can occur one or more years after undergoing bariatric surgery. While the exact cause of PBH is not fully understood, an excessive GLP-1 response to meals is believed to play a primary role. Excessive GLP-1 levels lead to hypersecretion of insulin, and this high level of insulin causes blood sugar levels to drop too low, a condition called hypoglycemia. PBH can cause persistent, recurrent, and debilitating hypoglycemic events for some individuals. Some symptoms, such as sweating, tremors, and palpitations, are caused by the body trying to raise blood sugar levels. Other symptoms occur due to an inadequate supply of blood sugar to the brain. This deprivation can manifest as impaired cognition, loss of consciousness, seizures, and other symptoms that can result in major disruptions to independent living. Repeated instances of hypoglycemia can lead to hypoglycemia unawareness, a condition in which the body does not produce the typical early signs and symptoms of low blood sugar. Failure to recognize hypoglycemia early can increase the risk of serious events, further impairing safety and requiring the assistance of others.Addressing conditions with high unmet needIt is estimated that PBH affects approximately 8 percent, or 160,000, of the two million people in the U.S. who have undergone the two most common types of bariatric surgery in the past decade. There are currently no approved therapies for PBH, but the scientific community is making strides in advancing research. Amylyx, a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is focused on developing potential new therapies for communities with high unmet needs, including for individuals with PBH. We feel an unwavering responsibility to the communities with high unmet need, and taking on such responsibility is at the heart of what we do. Our research is guided by the emerging science and inspired by the understanding that people living with conditions like PBH have been doubted, or even ignored, and living in search of answers for far too long, said Camille L. Bedrosian, MD, chief medical officer of Amylyx and an expert with nearly 30 years of experience addressing unmet medical needs for people with rare and serious conditions through successful clinical and translational research programs. For people living with PBH, each day can feel like a battle against persistent, recurrent, and debilitating hypoglycemic events that have a profound impact on their quality of life, rendering many unable to drive, work, live alone, or care for dependents. Fortunately, the scientific understanding of PBH is advancing rapidly as are potential therapies in clinical trials giving hope to people living with PBH and their families.

  • 90s video game publisher Acclaim returns from the grave thanks to a pro wrestler
    metro.co.uk
Acclaim was responsible for Turok back in the day (Acclaim)The original company behind Turok and Burnout has been resurrected under new leadership, with plans to revive its old IPs despite selling them off 21 years ago.Younger gamers have likely never heard of Acclaim. Once a prominent video game company of the 80s and 90s, it was responsible for publishing copious amounts of licensed games based on all manner of properties, from The Simpsons and Beetlejuice to Batman and Terminator 2.It did have some franchises that were more its own, such as Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (which was based on a comic but an obscure one) and the Burnout franchise, but financial difficulties led to Acclaim filing for bankruptcy, shutting down in 2004, and selling off all its assets.21 years later though, and Acclaim has been resurrected under new leadership and with a new goal of revitalising its old franchises and supporting indie studios. This new Acclaim is being spearheaded by one Alex Josef, the founder and former CEO of Graffiti Games, itself a publisher of various indie titles, such as the delightfully titled Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion and its sequel Turnip Boy Robs A Bank. Its leadership is said to be comprised of licensing icons, professional athletes, living music legends, and seasoned veterans who have defined the intersection of video games and pop culture, with an advisory board of esteemed industry leaders set up to help in Acclaims plans for reviving old properties. This includes, for some reason, professional wrestler Jeff Jarrett, having previously had involvement with Acclaims WWF video games during the days of the SNES and Sega Mega Drive.Im thrilled to now be a partner in the revival of Acclaim, an iconic publisher known for releasing some of the most legendary games of the 80s and 90s, said Jarrett. From my early involvement with the publishers hit 16-bit WWF titles to my experience helping shape the TNA Wrestling series, which spawned the first video game wrestler to become a full-time roster member in the Squared Circle, Ive seen firsthand the type of impact great games can have on players and fans.Resurrecting Acclaim is an opportunity to impart the same degree of passion and love to a new generation, and Im excited to be involved. A new Turok game was announced at last years The Game Awards and Acclaim isnt involved (Saber Interactive)Considering Acclaim sold all its properties, we have to question what it currently owns that it can capitalise on for a nostalgic revival. Were not sure who owns Turok nowadays, although a new entry from developer and publisher Saber Interactive, called Turok Origins is already supposed to be on its way.More TrendingBurnout, meanwhile, is currently gathering dust at EA, having not had a new entry since the 2018 remaster of Burnout Paradise. The same thing goes for basketball series NBA Jam, which EA also bought and has sat on since 2011.Acclaim certainly cant do anything with Mortal Kombat. The company had assisted Midway in bringing the first three games to consoles, but now the IP is firmly under the control of Warner Bros. While Acclaim has given no examples of what games it hopes to revive, Josef has confirmed that the company has already signed some incredible indie titles, which well be revealing soon. A new Burnout would be neat, but we doubt EA is willing to pony the licence up (EA)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.ArrowMORE: Turok remaster review retro dinosaur hunterGameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • Star Wars Celebration Just Announced 4 Very Exciting Panels
    gizmodo.com
The next four Star Wars projects will officially be on display at Star Wars Celebration Japan. The event, which takes place April 18-20, has yet to reveal its full schedule, but four of its biggest panels were just announced and they provide a glimpse at what the immediate future of the franchise holds. That future, of course, starts with The Mandalorian and Grogu. The summer 2026 release, directed by Jon Favreau, has already finished filming so you can imagine fans may see not just a trailer or two, but learn more about what makes this story destined for the big screen. That panel will take place on Friday, April 18 in what is potentially the first of the event. (Do we think Lucasfilm would release a trailer online this early too? That would be cool.) Saturday, April 19 turns its attention to TV with panels on Andor and Ahsoka. Andor season two will be just days away from premiering so in addition to some cast and crew being on hand, fans will probably get to see at least one episode from the show, if tradition holds. As for Ahsoka, very little is known about season two outside of where season one left things. Creator Dave Filoni is sure to change that with this panel, and maybe well even get some concrete details on when we can expect to watch it. Then on Sunday, April 20, well learn more about Star Wars Visions season three. The excellent animated anthology series has been a Star Wars bright spot in recent years and fans will be excited to learn what animation studios are on board this year and what topics theyll tackle. Thats just four panels thoughthe four that will require reservations to attend (and you can learn more about that here). Lucasfilm confirmed to io9 that many more panel announcements are still to come. However, two big questions remain. Will one of those panels celebrate the 20th anniversary of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith? And when, if at all, could Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy talk about what lies beyond The Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen? She seemed pretty locked into Shawn Levys film coming next and Celebration would be the place to announce that. But at which panel? In the coming weeks well have more in the lead-up to Celebration, and from the convention itself, here on io9. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

    gizmodo.com
George Lowe, a comedian and voice actor best known for his role as Space Ghost in the Adult Swim animated talk show series Space Ghost Coast to Coast, has died at 67. News of Lowes passing was first announced on Facebook by Lowes longtime friend Marvelous Marvin Boon. TVLine later confirmed Lowes passing. According to TVLine, Lowe passed away March 2, reportedly after battling a long illness. Im beyond devastated, Boon wrote. My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me [has] also died. He was a supremely talented artist and voice actor. A true warm-hearted genius. Funniest man on Earth too. Ive stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine. As noted by TVLine in a 2023 article, fans grew concerned over Lowes health after the actor stopped posting as frequently on social media. According to TVLine, Lowe was suffering from health problems, including an aortic dissection that required intubation twice, leading Lowe to require a nurse to care for him at his Florida residence.Space Ghost was originally a crime-fighting superhero created by Hanna-Barbera on Cartoon Planet. He later transitioned to the comedic late-night talk show host fans know and love him as today. Space Ghost Coast to Coast was ahead of its time, having its titular host sit down and chat with real-world celebrities like Willie Nelson, Talking Heads David Bryne, and Radioheads Thom Yorke. Lowe would also offer his voice as Space Ghost in other Adult Swim shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Robot Chicken, and he had a cameo on late rapper MF DOOMs Danger Doom track Space Hos. Other animated shows in which Lowe starred include The Brak Show and American Dad. Lowes last voice role will see him reprise as Space Ghost in the third season of Maxs animated series Jellystone!, which streams March 6. Want more io9 news? History - The history of the church of Nostra Signora della Costa in Levanto is uncertain; a nineteenth-century epigraph reports a consecration in 1334, but probably the building is more ancient. For the next two centuries the church was owned by the Community of the Borgo di Levanto until 8 January 1528 when it was sold to the noble Genoese family of Da Passano.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The works to expand the presbytery date back to the eighteenth century, as well as the frescoes and stucco decorations. In 1872 the episcopal inspection states: slate floor with marble squares and all the walls are frescoed: halfway up the wall are painted the Assumption of Mary and the Nativity. In the walls of the presbytery, the Annunciation and the visit to St. Elizabeth, and it's all excellent". After the Second World War, the building was sold to the Curia and then to a religious congregation and the building started its decline. The ancient church was compromised. The original floor has been lowered by about 50 cm and the hall split horizontally with a flat slab. The altars, balustrades, and valuable materials were sold, the church was deprived of its treasures. For years the situation remained like this; for a period it was even used as a school. In the 2000s, the slab was demolished and a new flat roof in laminated wood was built.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Idea - In 2018, it was purchased by the company PF Economy to create a cultural and experiential training center for conventions, conferences, seminars, and events. The client's idea is to increase the usable surface area with a more private space. The architectural design was carried out by caarpa, an architecture and landscape studio based in Genoa. The structural design was by EXA engineering. The idea of the project consists in the creation of a contemporary steel "cantoria" ( a kind of choir, typical of the Italian church).Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Design - The "cantoria" is a small architecture placed inside the hall. Its terse and linear design remodels the space of the entrance of the church. The only decorative concession is represented by two curved "capitals" that interrupt the linear structure and recall the elegance of the classical architecture. It is a mediating element, it suggests new spatiality and attempts connections with the ancient building. The new exposed steel structure is a spatial machine that adds new glimpses and views, modifying the perception of space. The staircase leading to the mezzanine floor wraps around the structure, offering a close-up view of the eighteenth-century stuccoes.Save this picture! In front of the counter faade, inside two small rooms, there is space for the technical systems. The restoration of the frescoes of the presbytery acts as a counterpoint to the walls of the hall. In this part of the building we wanted to leave the story of twentieth-century events exposed, just consolidating the pastel shades, the covered traces and the missing plasters as an informal expression of recent history. Although less "noble" than the ancient events, it now acquires an aesthetic value as well as a value of memory. The side altars, now stripped of their coverings, were covered with a layer of lime putty that allows us to glimpse their original shape, by now softened over the years. The stucco, cleaned of the patina of the centuries, brought to light traces of the original colors. The floor was made with slate tiles laid in a row and bordered every three. On the mezzanine floor, an open space overlooks the hall below. • Citizen scientists make cosmic discoveries with a global telescope network
    www.sciencenews.org
In January in Monterrey, Mexico, Ivn Venzor was one of only a dozen people in the world to glimpse a potential Jupiter-sized planet crossing in front of a distant star.It happened too fast to see by eye just a seconds-long flicker of light but Venzors backyard telescope recorded the data, allowing him to verify the event with researchers. Im having dinner with my family, and Im trying to discover a new kind of planet from a few meters outside, says Venzor, a hobby astronomer. Its effortless.Venzors telescope is part of a growing, global network enabling enthusiasts such as himself to contribute to astronomical research. Made up of over 15,000 small, Wi-Fienabled telescopes produced by the French company Unistellar, the network spans six continents and has helped discover hundreds of asteroids, comets and exoplanets. The discoveries rely on occultation when a sizable object such as an asteroid or planet briefly blocks the light of a star. By measuring the duration of these blockages from multiple locations, astronomers can determine the objects size, shape and trajectory. The network is the coolest citizen science project Ive ever seen, says Jon Vandegriff, a space physics data scientist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md.It has allowed researchers to refine predictions for the orbits of asteroids, contribute to exoplanet studies and even observe major space missions. In 2022, when NASA intentionally redirected an asteroid by crashing a spacecraft into it, the network helped track the debris from the collision. But the telescopes can cost up to $4,000 dollars each, making them inaccessible to many people. So Unistellar and nonprofits including Astronomers Without Borders have gifted telescopes to universities and astronomy clubs around the world to expand the networks reach. For those communities, the ability to contribute to space science is transformative.Marcelo Souza, an astrophysicist at Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro in Rio de Janeiro, received a free telescope for his astronomy club last year. When we received it, everything changed, Souza says. The instrument has become a key tool for teaching, research and astronomy outreach. In Armenia, an astronomy club run by space engineer Vachik Khachatryan and his brother, Mher, has used its partially-donated telescope at events for over 2,000 children. Vachik even brought it out at his wedding.Marcelo Souza uses his telescope at outreach events for children in the Brazilian city of Campos dos Goytacazes. While children and parents wait in line, he projects the telescopes view onto screens.Louis Cruls Astronomy ClubFor those interested in contributing to research, Unistellar distributes a list of transitory cosmic objects that can be seen in different locations each month. Once an observer selects their object of interest, they can press a button that directs an app to point the telescope at the target location and record a video of the passing object. Observers can also use the telescope to take still photos of their favorite nebulae and galaxies. At a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in December, Unistellars Chief Scientific Officer Frank Marchis and collaborators reported that the network successfully detected 136 asteroids. A forthcoming paper will detail the discovery of a rare binary asteroid two space rocks orbiting each other. Meanwhile, a partnership with NASA is helping to refine the orbits of around 20 exoplanets.Sponsor MessageThe teams next frontier is using machine learning to minimize false observations caused by clouds or satellites. And in April, 50 observers will receive hardware prototypes that will allow researchers to remotely operate the telescopes, eliminating user error during important transits.Marchis, who is also a planetary astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., wants to scale up the network by expanding participation in underrepresented regions such as Africa, central Asia and South America. That would be a boon for researchers and hobbyists alike. On your own, you can do only so much in astronomy, Venzor says. By working together, you are feeling part of something greater.
