  • Why We Dont Have Real Quantum Computing Yet
    www.forbes.com
Quantum computing promises to revolutionize industries from AI to drug discovery, but significant ... [+] engineering challenges remain before we see practical applications.Adobe StockFrom where we're sitting today, it's increasingly likely that quantum computing will be one of the most disruptive technologies on the medium-term horizon.Heres why: Harnessing the properties of matter as it behaves at the sub-atomic level by taking advantage of strange phenomena like entanglement and superposition means certain types of computation can be vastly accelerated. These include:Identifying patterns across vast data setsSolving complex optimization problems involving many variablesCryptographic encryption for encoding and decoding informationSolving vital real-world challenges such as artificial intelligence, drug and materials discovery, and cyber security all rely on these calculations. So, the impact of quantum computing is likely to be immense. There are some, though, who believe the reality is still some way off. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huangs views on this recently caused a mini-crash in the stock price of quantum computing providers. His belief is that very useful quantum computers could be 30 years away.On the other hand, evidence shows that quantum computing is increasingly accessible. Most of the big cloud providersGoogle, Amazon, Microsoftoffer quantum-as-a-service, along with a growing ecosystem of startups and disruptors such as D-Wave and IonQ.So, whats the difference between whats available today and what will be available when quantum becomes really useful?Todays Quantum Computers The NISQ EraAlthough theyre incredible feats of engineering, quantum computers today are plagued by a number of limitations. For this reason, the current era of quantum computing is dubbed the Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) era. Although improvements and breakthroughs are being made constantly, systems that are accessible today suffer from low fault tolerance, high rates of error caused by qubits decaying out of their quantum state, and extreme sensitivity to interference. Most systems still rely on classical computing architecture to handle many tasks, which creates speed bottlenecks. And while todays most powerful quantum computers have around 1,000 qubits, some predict that a scale of hundreds of thousands or even millions could be needed for advanced problems.Adding new qubits isnt as easy as it sounds. In fact, its a hugely complex engineering problem, as qubits have to be isolated from the outside world so they don't decohere, and they have to be frozen to temperatures millionths of a degree above absolute zero.In simple terms, todays technologies are largely experimental, proof-of-concept or prototypes. Although they are constantly improving, they arent the scalable, robust systems needed for industrial applications.Towards Quantum Supremacy While big challenges remain, some hugely significant strides have been taken in recent years.Google recently announced that it had developed revolutionary methods of improving the error tolerance of quantum computing by combining multiple qubits to make logical qubits.New types of qubits, like photonic qubits and trapped ion qubits, are also showing promise when it comes to improving stability. And breakthroughs have been made in the development of room-temperature qubits, which could remove the expense of super-cooling from the equations.Progress is also ongoing in building the infrastructure that needs to be in place for quantum to be truly useful once the power is available. This involves creating quantum programming languages like Microsoft Q#, IBM Qiskit, or the open-source PennyLane, as well as operating systems. And Microsoft recently announced a breakthrough with Majorana 1, the worlds first topological qubit processor. This processor uses an entirely new state of matter to dramatically improve qubit stability and scalepotentially enabling the integration of over a million qubits on a single chip, a major leap toward practical quantum computing.Challenges certainly also remain around building out a human workforce that will be able to fully leverage it. This will require a big investment in education, skills, and training. So were heading in the right direction along the path to quantum supremacy the point where quantum computers can solve problems that classical computers simply cant.Although true quantum might not be immediately around the corner, I dont think it will be long before we can at least start to see it making a difference in our lives.

  • Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Joins Bid to Buy TikTok
    time.com
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has joined billionaire Frank McCourts bid to acquire TikTok as a strategic adviser.McCourts internet advocacy organization, Project Liberty, announced this week that Ohanian, an investor married to tennis star Serena Williams, had joined a consortium called The Peoples Bid for TikTok.Im officially now one of the people trying to buy TikTok USand bring it on-chain, Ohanian said in a series of posts made Tuesday on X, referencing a decentralized, blockchain-based platform that Project Liberty says it will leverage to provide users more control over their online data.AdvertisementAdvertisementIf successful in its bid, Project Liberty said the technology will serve as the backbone of the redesigned TikTok, ensuring that privacy, security, and digital independence are no longer optional but foundational. When asked by an X user on Monday what he would call TikTok if he purchased it, Ohanian said: TikTok: Freedom Edition.Under a federal bill passed with bipartisan support and signed into law by former President Joe Biden last year, TikTok was required to cut ties with its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or face a ban by Jan. 19.In one of his first executive orders signed in January, President Donald Trump extended the deadline for TikTok to find new ownership until early April.McCourts consortiumwhich includes Shark Tank star Kevin OLearyhas already offered ByteDance $20 billion in cash for the U.S. platform. Some analysts estimate TikTok could be worth much more than that even without its coveted algorithm, which McCourt has said hes not interested in.Trump said in January that Microsoft is among the U.S. companies looking to take control of TikTok. Others eyeing TikTok include the artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI, which has proposed to merge its business with TikToks U.S. platform and give the U.S. government a stake in the new entity. Theres also Jesse Tinsley, the founder of the payroll firm Employer.com. Tinsley has said a consortium he put togetherwhich includes the CEO of video game platform Robloxis offering ByteDance more than $30 billion for TikTok.

  • Suikoden I&II HD Remaster taught me to love random encounters again
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsBringing back the pastTaking inspiration from othersIm not a fan of random encounters in RPGs anymore. As someone who had adult responsibilities on top of reviewing video games, I find my time to be much more valuable than when I was 13 years old. I get why they exist. Back in the day, implementing random encounters was a way to get around hardware restrictions, as it was too technically demanding to generate multiple enemies in an environment simultaneously. Other times, random encounters were creative decisions meant to simulate the randomness of RPGs like Dungeons & Dungeons. With hardware limitation not being a problem nowadays, many games have gotten rid of random encounters in favor of visible enemies on the field. This lets players decide whether they want to engage in battle or not.Recommended VideosWhen I play an RPG, I prefer to conserve resources for boss battles and want to quickly experience a games story, so random encounters are incredibly frustrating. If Im forced into battle, I risk losing precious HP and wasting MP on small fry when I need to be prepared for the harder fights up ahead. Consequently, this makes random encounters boring as Im only using basic attacks instead of flashy ones that consume MP. There are ways around this. While games like Tales of Graces fhave visible enemies instead of random encounters, it also has no MP at all. Modern features like this really fit my gaming habits and lifestyle. So when I was getting ready to play Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, I was dreading having to trudge through random encounters because they were staples in retro RPGs. Surprisingly, I actually found myself enjoying the random encounters, and thats thanks to its timeless dungeon design and pacing that makes these remasters worth revisiting even if you dont usually have the patience for classic RPGs.Suikoden is a RPG series filled with political intrigue and exciting turn-based battles. Its loosely based off of the Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan, where 108 outlaws come together to fight a common enemy. As a result, each mainline Suikoden game has 108 recruitable characters. While not all of them are playable, its still definitely a grind to keep the huge cast up to speed with each characters level and equipment, necessitating random encounters. What really stands out more than anything, though, is its excellent dungeon design, which smartly accounts for its random encounters. Dungeons are short, mostly containing a few large rooms with one or two branching paths that lead to treasure chests. Short dungeons means fewer random encounters before an upcoming boss and I can conserve more resources like my HP and healing items. One new feature in these remasters that I initially took for granted is the Dash ability. Simply put, it just lets your character run faster. In the original Suikoden, your protagonist would have to equip the Holy Orb in order to use Dash. In the remasters, the ability is already baked into your character from the very beginning, which also frees up a precious Orb slot that you can use for a different ability and lets me sprint through dungeons even faster. One combat feature that made Suikoden ahead of its time was its auto-battle feature. In its turn-based battles, you have to click commands such as attack or defend for all six of your characters. Having to go through six different menus really bogs down the battles flow, especially random encounter ones. Auto-battle automatically allows my characters to just hit with basic attacks without having to manually input commands. New to the remasters is also a speed up feature. This simply just fast forwards a battle like a video tape and is a huge quality-of-life improvement that makes it easier to push through random encounters. These quality of life features dont just keep an old game up to speed with modern times. In fact, the remasters go beyond some brand new retro-inspired games. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, an RPG billed as a Suikoden spiritual successor, doesnt have a fast forward feature. Eiyuden Chronicle is a fascinating counterpoint to the new remakes, as its a project that made crucial mistakes in its attempt to blend in modern game design with retro mechanics.KonamiFor instance, Eiyudens dungeons felt entirely too long compared to those in Suikoden. It felt like the result of Eiyuden trying to make dungeons that felt modern, but it clashed with its old-school random encounters. The longer the dungeon, the more encounters I triggered. Normally, this wouldnt be a problem, but I hated having to waste MP against normal enemy encounters when I could be saving it for an upcoming boss. This is exacerbated by the fact that save points dont restore your HP and MP.While the save points in Suikoden also dont restore HP, the difference here is that the dungeons are much shorter, making the trek to the boss much less annoying. The pacing at which healing items are upgraded makes a big difference too. In Eiyuden, the base healing potion only heals 40 HP, which I felt was inadequate. However, in Suikoden, the base medicine heals 100 HP, a much more appropriate amount. In the early parts of both Suikoden and Eiyuden, that healing amount made a huge difference as enemies can hit quite hard. Its not until later in the Eiyuden that you get access to its second level healing potion, which heals 100 HP.Both Eiyuden and Suikoden have a Rune system, but its the way they utilize MP that stands out. Eiyudens MP system is as straightforward as many RPGs. Your allies can cast magic spells to either deal damage, grant buffs, or heal HP. The issue here is that MP restoration items are incredibly rare, and can usually only be found in treasure chests up until you develop your HQ to include the items in its tool shop.Suikoden, on the other hand, doesnt deal with traditional MP at all. Each Rune has a set number of times that they can be cast. The only way to restore Runes is by sleeping at an inn. This system feels much more limiting on paper. But in practice, I had plenty of medicine so that I didnt have to waste my healing or offensive Runes on random encounters and could save them for harder fights.KonamiWhile Eiyden Chronicle struggled by straightforwardly implementing random encounters, other recent RPGs have taken unique approaches to the mechanic to make them feel modern. In the Bravely Default series, theres an adjustable slider to change the encounter rate. It can even be set to completely off, and that makes exploring dungeons less stressful. However, this could come at the expense of being underleveled for boss fights. The player agency lets me dictate the pacing, which is something I appreciated. In Fantasian Neo Dimension, players can stack random encounters up to a certain point into a separate pocket dimension and then defeat all of the enemies in one fell swoop. I was making progress as it was an efficient way to get more powerful while also respecting my time. Its ironic that these Suikoden games, which have the most basic random encounter system, didnt frustrate me as much as those titles designed to cut back on friction. Its all thanks to how smartly designed Suikoden is with its dungeon length and its handling of items. I can see why the series was so lauded to begin with: it got things right the first time.Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars launch on March 6 today for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

  • 80s classic ZX Spectrum game making an unexpected but welcome return
    metro.co.uk
Head Over Heels: Deluxe its back, again (SpecNext Ltd)One of the most celebrated British video games of all time is getting a new remake, with a physical edition aimed at retro fans with long memories. As weve always said, the problem with video game nostalgia is that remasters and reboots are almost always aimed solely at American and Japanese gamers. Video game preservation may be relatively easy for older games, on a technical level, but next to no effort is ever made to promote or re-release games that were only popular in Europe. You do get the occasional exception, such as last years Monty Mole Collection, but too many groundbreaking video games are being forgotten simply because they arent well known in the US or Japan.Ask any British gamer in the 80s what the best game ever made was and they were just as likely to say Head Over Heels as Super Mario Bros., but today the classic isometric action adventure has been all but forgotten or so we thought.Although technically a remake, this new version of the classic Head Over Heels sticks very close to the original visuals and sound, as if it was some sort of long lost SNES version. While it was ported to many different formats at the time, including the Commodore 64 and the 16-bit Amiga and Atari ST (and the 64-bit Jaguar), Head Over Heels is best remembered as a ZX Spectrum game.First released in 1987, it was an evolution of the style of action adventure games Ultimate Play the Game (now known as Rare) popularised with titles like Knight Lore and Alien 8.These were a style of game peculiar to Europe and inspired by the technical limitations of the home computer formats of the time, mixing both standard arcade action with complex puzzle-solving and platforming.Head Over Heels puts you in control of two characters one a head that can glide and the other a pair of legs with a head that can run fast who you can switch control between at any time and team-up into one conjoined being if you can get them to touch. It really is a genuine classic and this new remake, named Head Over Heels: Deluxe, adds a new world, with new enemies and objects, as well as chickens. Its not clear what these do but wed guess they work as some sort of power-up if you collect them. The game has a listing on Steam, with a release date of March 6 but no price. However, it seems to already be available for 12.99 from co-developer Rusty Pixels. Its also a free download if you were a backer for the Spectrum Next retro computer.More TrendingTo be honest though, none of this will likely help with the games visibility. There dont seem to be any console versions planned and there was already one remake back in 2019, that opted for a slightly more sterile and less pixelated style for its visuals. That went largely unnoticed by most and this new remake is likely to go the same way, although there is a physical edition you can buy, including a deluxe edition that includes a signed A6 postcard, a pin badge, and a CD of the games soundtrack.Unfortunately though, original creator Jon Ritman does not seem to be involved. Ritman was quite the celebrity programmer back in the 80s, known for other isometric titles such as Batman and Monster Max on the Game Boy.He also made the Match Day series for Ocean and his last recorded game was PlayStation era title Super Match Soccer in 1998, which was published by Acclaim, who by coincidence have also announced their return this week.
