  • One of CrossFit's fittest women says success gives her a sense of stability after a tough childhood
    www.businessinsider.com
2025-03-05T12:50:07Z Read in app Danielle Brandon has shared how her upbringing helped her succeed as a CrossFit athlete. RAD Global This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Danielle Brandon is a top CrossFit athlete and one of the sport's fittest women. She spoke exclusively to BI about how her unstable childhood shaped her.Brandon said she used sport as an escape and an outlet for her addictive tendencies. When Danielle Brandon's school friends asked about her family, she would lie and say her mom was dead.Until her late 20s, Brandon, who was born in a small city in Idaho, kept the details of her chaotic upbringing punctuated by her mother going in and out of prison a secret, fearing pity. But the 29-year-old told Business Insider she believes these challenges made her more resilient, independent, and determined to succeed. Her survival tactic of losing herself in gymnastics became a lifeline."It's really hard for me to trust or lean on other people," she said. "I kind of default to being alone, being independent in that sense of not wanting help."Now, she is one of the biggest stars of CrossFit, having competed at every CrossFit Games since 2019. In 2022, she finished 4th, her all-time best position, making her one of the sport's fittest women on earth."I have to be successful in what I do because with that comes a sense of stability," she said."It feels so normal to me that I don't look at it as this inspiring story," she added. Brandon speaking to Business Insider's Rachel Hosie. RAD Global Brandon says she is an 'addictive person'Brandon moved from her grandparents' basement, where she lived with her mom and brother as a young child, to a trailer park in Washington in 2002, then to her aunt and uncle's after her mom went to prison for drug possession in 2004.With four of their own kids, Brandon's aunt and uncle struggled, she said. To keep Brandon busy, her grandparents suggested she try gymnastics. She thrived on the discipline and structure, and found she had an innate desire to push herself.Brandon describes herself as an "addictive person," a trait she thinks she got from her mom and absent dad, who have both struggled with addiction. Perhaps it was this tendency that saw her mom excel at swimming in her 20s, narrowly missing out on the Olympics, and bodybuilding competitively in her 30s, Brandon wonders."Once I'm really into something, I'm all into that," Brandon said.Brandon excelled at all sportsAfter her mom got out of prison in 2008, Brandon and her brother went back to live with her in the trailer in Washington. She encouraged her daughter to hone her gymnastics skills by doing handstand walks across the floor. But as her talent blossomed, life didn't get any easier: in 2009, one of her mom's partners hung himself in their bathroom, and Brandon often threw away her mom's drugs in the hope that she would spend more time with them. But police raided her home in eighth grade, and her mom went back to prison. Danielle Brandon believes her background has made her stronger. RAD Global "It wasn't normal, but it was routine for us," Brandon said.To avoid being at her crowded aunt and uncle's place where she slept in a closet, Brandon spent as much time as possible at gymnastics training.By the time she was in high school, Brandon's skills unusual for her age were getting noticed."Sometime in my junior or senior year I went to a gym," Brandon said. "They were like, 'Try a muscle-up,' and I did a strict ring muscle-up. Everyone was like, 'What the heck?'"Brandon took up track, pole vault, swimming, and diving alongside gymnastics. She was a natural, but her determination made her excel."It was hard not to be competitive," she said.Speaking on a documentary about Brandon's life produced by her clothing sponsor RAD, her now agent, Cooper Marsh, said, "When others might crumble during chaos, Danielle thrives."Her coaches encouraged her to go to collegeBy the time college application season came around in 2013, schools were writing to Brandon, urging her to apply for sports scholarships. At first, having never considered college, Brandon "just blew it off," but ultimately accepted a scholarship to California State University, Sacramento with some encouragement from her coaches."It was really cool because I felt like I was creating my own life," she said. Brandon, whose earliest memories are of taking care of her brother and mom, was finally in a position where she only had to look after herself. CrossFit became Brandon's main passion at college. RAD Global Her mom was released from prison and got clean in Brandon's first year of college, and she stayed with her mom that summer."It was like meeting up with a stranger," she said. "We didn't really know where we fit into each other's lives."Over time, the pair rebuilt their relationship, and Brandon's mom is hugely supportive of her, she said.Handstand walks got Brandon noticedDuring university, Brandon started going to a CrossFit gym and got hooked. But it wasn't until she graduated in 2019 that she was able to fulfill her ambition of competing in the CrossFit Open, which is the first step towards competing at the CrossFit Games.Pole vault and the 400 meters were her official sports at college, and CrossFit and college athletics competitions were always on the same date. Brandon has always thrived in the discipline of sport. RAD Global Brandon, who juggled training with two to three other jobs, made it to the CrossFit Games the first year she was able to try.A relative unknown, Brandon caught the attention of the CrossFit world with her impressive handstand walks, now her signature move, and won the second event. After the 2019 Games, brands became interested in her, and she got an agent and a coach. "I didn't know how to handle it," she said. "I'd never thought it could be a career. It all happened so quickly."Never forgetting where she came fromWhile Brandon's star has risen in the CrossFit world, her focus is simple: train hard and love her friends. "It attracts good things, I guess," she said. She knows she won't be an athlete forever and a big priority is giving back: She wants to help kids who, like her, didn't have the easiest upbringings.Brandon is most proud of staying connected to her past while continually growing. "I truly don't think I'll ever forget where I came from," she said.

Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Monaco is the world's most expensive place to buy luxury housing. The 2025 Knight Frank Wealth Report says $1 million buys just 205 sq ft of prime residential property. The tax haven is tiny and densely populated, so there's very little space to build on.A million dollars will only buy you about as much space as a parking spot in Monaco. That's according to this year's Knight Frank Wealth Report, which found that $1 million will buy just 19 square meters, or about 205 square feet, of prime residential property in the microstate on the French Riviera. In comparison, the same amount would get you 34 square meters (about 366 square feet) in New York the world's sixth most-expensive market for luxury real estate.Hong Kong is ranked second, followed by Singapore, Geneva, and London.Monaco remains a magnet for the superrich due to its lack of income or capital gains taxes, along with its favorable climate and high-quality healthcare. However, housing costs are exceptionally high. Monaco was also the world's most expensive luxury rental market last year.A Knight Frank analysis from May 2024 found that renting a 1,100-square-foot property in Monaco starts at about $19,350 a month. A $30,000 budget would likely only stretch to a modest two-bedroom apartment.Monaco's extreme property prices are driven by a lack of space to build more properties, resulting in a limited housing supply. At just 510 acres, Monaco is the world's second-smallest sovereign state after the Vatican City. For perspective, the constitutional monarchy is smaller than New York's Central Park, which covers 843 acres, while the entire city spans about 200,000 acres.According to the latest World Bank data, Monaco is also the most densely populated country, with 18,681 people per square kilometer. To address the space constraints, Monaco has been reclaiming land from the sea for decades. In 2019, Savills said it was investing more than $2 billion to extend Monaco's coastline by a further 15 acres, creating homes for about 1,000 people.

  • The Democrats response to Trump is splintered but getting better
    www.vox.com
After failing to consolidate around a single message of resistance to President Donald Trump over the past six weeks, it seems like the Democratic Party finally has an idea of what to say but theyre still struggling to figure out how to communicate that message to the American people. The argument Democrats made in response to Trumps first joint address to Congress is still slightly cloudy. But one version goes something like this: Trump cant be trusted with the economy, hes steering the country into dangerous territory, and hes not focused on the kitchen-table issues the American people care about.Even before Trumps address Tuesday night, congressional Democrats were torn about how to get their message across. Should they even attend the speech? Would their time be better spent talking to constituents and using alternative media to respond? And if they did show up, should they protest, disrupt, or heckle the president, or sit and listen? An early answer to that last question came within the first five minutes of Trumps address. Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green stood up and heckled the president, shouting that Trump has no mandate to cut Medicaid. He was drowned out by Republicans and eventually expelled from the chamber.Other House Democrats wielded hand-held signs with phrases like save Medicaid, protect veterans, and Musk steals. Yet they were roundly mocked online by both Republicans and liberals wishing for more aggressive resistance to the president. As the speech continued, Democrats began to walk out. Some wore shirts emblazoned with other protest slogans, like Florida Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frosts which read No Kings Live Here. And no Democrats clapped or stood for Trump during his two-hour-long speech. And yet this all seemed to empower Trump, rather than boost the Democrats own standing with audiences. One CNN flash poll after the address found a majority of viewers viewed the address as very or somewhat positive including 44 percent who had a very positive reaction.Even after the speech, the Democrats response was still a bit messy. The official rebuttal was delivered by Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a moderate former intelligence official who outran former Vice President Kamala Harris in Michigan and won her Senate seat even as Trump won the state. Prices are still too high, she said, and Americans want change but in a responsible, not reckless way. She zeroed in on everyday concerns: national security weakened by Trumps foreign policy, personal data and privacy put at risk by Elon Musks Department of Government Efficiency purges of the federal government, and the harmful impact of Trumps economic policy on Americans lives.Do [Trumps] plans actually help Americans get ahead? Not even close, she said. President Trump is trying to deliver an unprecedented giveaway to his billionaire friendsand to do that, hes going to make you pay in every part of your life. Grocery and home prices are going up, not down. His tariffs on allies like Canada will raise prices on energy, lumber, and cars. Premiums and prescriptions will cost more. And one more thing: In order to pay for his plan, he could very well come after your retirement.Meanwhile, on Instagram Live and BlueSky, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez talked up the threat that Trumps proposed tax cuts pose to Medicaid and Medicare. The presidents promise to cut taxes while also balancing the federal budget meant that Republicans would have to gut Medicaid, she said.Other House members talked about Trumps new tariffs against Canada, China, and Mexico, or focused their reactions on his proposed tax cuts as gifts to his billionaire friends. Sen. Bernie Sanders laid into Trumps parallel reality of focusing on issues nowhere near the concerns of the American people. From a distance, these all look like versions of the same argument. But they point in different directions. Slotkins conclusion was for Democrats, and disaffected Trump voters, to keep patient and hold their representatives accountable. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez seemed to call for more confrontation pressuring Republicans, not believing anything they have to say, and saturating media with negative news. And a swath of rank-and-file members just seem to be along for the ride. With a lack of purpose and unity from messengers, it isnt clear yet that their larger point about Trump will break through just yet. And thats partially because Democrats are splintered across the media. They didnt uniformly boycott the address and force attention to another platform, and theyre still relying on conventional modes of communicating with the public. Big presidential speeches tend to draw the immediate attention of highly engaged Americans who tune in. Everyone else will be exposed to it, and the Democrats reactions, in shorter clips online, via commentary on podcasts and livestreams, and through news reports in the aftermath. On that front, Democrats still have a long way to go to break through and get across a concise and straightforward counter to Trumps claims.See More:

  • The AI revolution is here. Can we build a Good Robot?
    www.vox.com
Theres a thought experiment that has taken on almost mythic status among a certain group of technologists: If you build an artificial intelligence and give it a seemingly innocuous goal, like making as many paper clips as possible, it might eventually turn everything including humanity into raw material for more paper clips. Absurd parables like this one have been taken seriously by some of the loudest voices in Silicon Valley, many of whom are now warning that AI is an existential risk, more dangerous than nuclear weapons. These stories have shaped how billionaires including Elon Musk think about AI and fueled a growing movement of people who believe it could be the best or worst thing to ever happen to humanity. But another faction of AI experts argue that debating those hypothetical risks is obscuring the real damage AI is already doing: Automated hiring systems reinforcing discrimination. AI-generated deepfakes making it harder to tell whats real. Large language models like ChatGPT confidently spreading misinformation. (Disclosure: Vox Media is one of several publishers that has signed partnership agreements with OpenAI.) So what exactly should we actually be worried about when it comes to AI? In Good Robot, a special four-part podcast series launching March 12 from Unexplainable and Future Perfect, host Julia Longoria goes deep into the strange, high-stakes world of AI to answer that question. But this isnt just a story about technology its about the people shaping it, the competing ideologies driving them, and the enormous consequences of getting this right (or wrong). For a long time, AI was something most people didnt have to think about, but thats no longer the case. The decisions being made right now about who controls AI, how its trained, and what it should or shouldnt be allowed to do are already changing the world. The people trying to build these systems dont agree on what should happen next or even on what exactly it is theyre creating. Some call it artificial general intelligence (AGI), while OpenAIs CEO, Sam Altman, has talked of creating a magic intelligence in the sky something like a god. But whether AI is a true existential risk or just another overhyped tech trend, one thing is certain: the stakes are getting higher, and the fight over what kind of intelligence were building is only beginning. Good Robot takes you inside this fight not just the technology, but the ideologies, fears, and ambitions shaping it. From billionaires and researchers to ethicists and skeptics, this is the story of AIs messy, uncertain future, and the people trying to steer it.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. • All you need to know about GTA 5 Enhanced Edition and how you can get it
    www.dailystar.co.uk
GTA 5's Enhanced Edition is finally here for PC gamers, and it looks great here's all you need to know about the huge free update from Rockstar ahead of GTA 6 newsTech10:42, 05 Mar 2025The Enhanced Edition is a huge upgrade(Image: Rockstar Games)Grand Theft Auto 6 is likely to dominate the gaming landscape if it launches this year, but that doesn't mean Rockstar has forgotten about its 2013 crim sim.GTA 5 Enhanced Edition is available on PC, and it's a huge free upgrade that brings features previously exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X.It's much more than a lick of paint, though, and below we'll cover all the reasons to be excited, from those gorgeous new lighting effects to fresh GTA Online content PC players haven't had access to until now. Here's all you need to know about GTA 5 Enhanced Edition.Content cannot be displayed without consentThe Enhanced Edition is an improved version of GTA 5, which brings it in line with the Enhanced Edition PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players have had for some time. The headline features are additional GTA Online content and the new visual overhaul, which Rockstar says "optimizes the game experience and performance on modern PCs".Players can get new weapons, as well as access to the daily Wildlife Photography Challenge for more relaxing strolls through the Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness.Never played GTA Online? There's a more curated tutorial now, making it easier than ever to get into the huge multiplayer mode.PC players can also get ray tracing features only available on PC, with AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS support available, with Frame Generation Support to come. The update also includes the option to subscribe to GTA+, a monthly membership that offers additional vehicles and in-game cash.Even the less populated areas of Los Santos will look better(Image: Rockstar Games)While PS5 and Xbox Series X players had to pay a fee to upgrade to the Enhanced Edition, PC gamers that own GTA 5 can get it for free. The only catch is that it's technically a new game on Steam, the Epic Games Store, or the Rockstar Games launcher.I claimed the game for free on Epic a few years back, and found the 'Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced' version in my library, so it's worth checking on your PC launcher of choice. If you don't own the game, it'll cost you 30 for the game and a GTA Online starter pack, but there's a 50% discount until March 20.Ready to hang out with Trevor again?(Image: Rockstar Games)Yep! If you've been playing what Rockstar now calls the 'Legacy Edition' of GTA 5, you can migrate your Story Mode and Online save across to the new version. Here's what Rockstar said: "On March 4, once the free upgrade is available, you'll be able to migrate your Story Mode progress and GTA Online character progress from within GTAV Enhanced. The GTA Online transfer is also a one-time migration that does not delete your GTAV Legacy progress, but it cannot be reversed, and includes any Characters, GTA$, Progression, Stats, Vehicles, Properties, Weapons, Clothing, and Player-Created Jobs.""Players on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can still only migrate Story Mode and Online progress to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation or Xbox console families and PC."Expect impressive lighting and reflections(Image: Rockstar Games)Article continues belowWhile the character migration is one-way only, you don't have to upgrade. That's particularly useful if you're not in a position to run the Enhanced Edition on your current PC.For more on GTA, be sure to check out the news that Rockstar has a acquired a studio, or the fact that John Cena is even taunting Rockstar after his heel turn. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

  • Games Inbox: Should Call Of Duty: Warzone be shut down?
    metro.co.uk
Should Call Of Duty: Warzone is it a lost cause? (Activision)The Wednesday letters page is getting very excited about the Nintendo Direct in April, as a reader asks what the connection is between Dark Souls and Elden Ring.To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe COD crowdI honestly didnt know that Call Of Duty: Warzone is in such trouble but Ill be honest, Im glad of it. I used to play the game very regularly a year or two ago but it is so completely overtaken by cheats that its literally unplayable. I have no idea what they must be getting out of all this, given theyre trying to cheat in a game already filled by cheaters, but its an absolute wasteland out there, in terms of having a proper game.Unless theres some major technical solution to this thats possible, I just dont see any way to save the game but then I also dont see what difference rebooting it for a second time is going to do. So in that sense I can see why they Activision would just give up on it, strange as that seems. The problem for them is that if its successful, and it has Call Of Duty in the name, its always going to attract the worst of the worst of gamers and Im not sure theres anything they can do about it. Apex Legends is a similar kind of game, that does similar numbers, but its not nearly as bad, just because it doesnt attract the COD crowd as much.OvertopA lack of sincere flatteryVery excited about playing Split Fiction this week and I do think back to GCs interview with Josef Fares, where they asked him why nobody else is copying his stuff and he didnt know. I do find it very weird how companies let lets of other fads go by without ever trying to copy them, but the minute battle royale is a thing suddenly theyre all over that.I get that its because the rewards are bigger but at the same time the chances of success are lower. You make a good co-op game and apparently you can sell 20+ million and be king of your own genre. I dont get the impression Split Fiction was especially expensive to make and they did it in three year, so it cant really have been.I wouldnt even really call it indie, given how good it looks. But how many It Takes Two clones are there in the world? Zero. And how many battle royales? Too many to count.GannetBe careful what you wish forId be a little wary of getting too excited about the success of Monster Hunter Wilds, because its been so big I fear were in danger of Capcom just becoming the Monster Hunter factory.Remember, that way back in time Activision used to make games other than Call Of Duty. But the bigger that got the less interested they got in everything else, and now they only make that one game.I dont think Capcom are that kind of company, but greed corrupts everyone in the end, if they have things too easy for too long.SkipperEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukFrom cinematic universeI do find it interesting that FromSoftware have said there wont be a sequel to Elden Ring, only the multiplayer spin-off. I admire that, because its always best to get new games rather than more sequels, but I do wonder what the motivation is there, given its their most successful game for a long while.Since its still quite similar to Dark Souls and could quite easily have been called Dark Souls 4 I do wonder whether the next game will be the same: a different name and world but still the same kind of dark gothic fantasy world. At that point I feel its going to start seeming a bit weird that you have all these similar but not connected worlds that could easily be the same thing if they just changed the name on the front of the box. Maybe From could start to link them all together though? What is the Lands Between actually between? Maybe its the Dark Souls universe and the Demons Souls one.Although that might come dangerously close to explaining things and I know thats definitely not something FromSoftware like to do.GalenJust a theoryIn response to Shipleys letter, I have to say that Im not sure I see the logic in ignoring a games unavailability on a format just because its available on multiple other formats. As a theoretical example, if 10 incredible third party games were released on format A and format B, but format C only had 10 average exclusives its fair to say you wouldnt be opting for format C. While thats clearly not a direct parallel (Nintendo has some amazing exclusives), I dont think its reasonable to disregard the inability to play some games like Elden Ring when weighing it up.Going forward though, with companies hitting a graphical ceiling and having to cut costs I think Nintendo will get even more third party options in addition to all first party exclusives. Thats going to make life even more interesting for Sony and Microsoft!Matt (he_who_runs_away PSN ID)Reasonably excitedI am starting to get unreasonably excited about the Nintendo Switch 2. Weve learnt very little about it this year so Im hoping that the April Direct is going to open the floodgates and suddenly well have a bunch of new games to pick over and dissect the trailers for.Apart from Mario Kart we have no idea what any of them are either and while there are plenty of logical guesses and assumptions the fact that this is Nintendo means we can take any of them for granted, which I love. This has been such a slow, messy, and confusing generation of consoles and even then Nintendo has been the only bright spot, even if theyre not really in a specific lane now in terms of actual generations.I dont want anything specific, Im not going to wish for my favourite games to sequels or revamps, I just want to be surprised and entertained. I feel there hasnt been enough of that lately.PinkyCommon indifferenceWhat a horrible letter saying you dont know or care who makes your games, or what happens to them with all the layoffs. I know GC has said this kind of attitude is quite common, in the letters they get, but its shocking to me to see it.I suppose I shouldnt be surprised, given how half the world seems to have turned mad lately, but to not have any empathy or gratitude towards people that are now losing their jobs, to make you the things you love, seems heartless.BookerMoment of opportunityI think it goes without saying that I, and I assume everyone else reading this, has no idea what Xbox is doing at the moment. I also think the general consensus is that neither do they. But they must have some sort of plan, because they have this next gen console theyre on about and now we have rumours that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is going to be an exclusive for it. I can imagine some dopey exec, probably not Phil Spencer, thinks they can attract millions of people to the console because they have Call Of Duty exclusive but I hate to tell them, thats not going to happen. To be honest, if Warzone is starting to go down in popularity Id be happy to see Call Of Duty in general take a few knocks, just so something else can take dominance for a while. Although really, what else is there? When you think about it, the number of guaranteed sellers that are also multiformat is kind of small nowadays, if you dont count sports.Seems like a big opportunity out there for someone to take the crown, especially as I dont think Assassins Creed is really a contender anymore. Obviously GTA 6 is, but that only comes round once in a blue moon.GadflyInbox also-ransI dont get the Acclaim announcement at all. Acclaim were always a low rent, low quality publisher who didnt really deserve to survive. And theyve got none of their own franchises anyway? Sounds very suspect to me.GoldmanIm not very interested in Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 + 4 but I wish Activision would remaster the Prototype games. Maybe its the nostalgia talking but I really liked them.NosegrimMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • You Can Find Makeup Looks and Clothes to Wear With Google Searchs AI-Powered Vision Match
    gizmodo.com
Just in time for prom season, Google is officially rolling out Vision Match as part of the Google search experience on mobile. The feature was previously available as an experiment. Starting today, you can use it to describe a look youre going for and have Google help you shop for it. Vision Match is pretty self-explanatory: type in your vision of what you want to wearmaybe it was a dress you saw on someone recently, or youre simply thinking up an outfit in your headand Google will use the query to spawn images that look like what youre describing. You can then use those images to hone in on a search across the web. Vision Match taps into Googles Shopping Graph, a bona fide data set just for finding looks and fits among whatever the search engine giant has indexed. Itll bring you to real-life pieces of clothing you can buy. A version of this works with cosmetics, too, and thats also rolling out this week. In Google search, you can describe makeup looks with phrases like soft glam or gothy prom queenthink what youd type into YouTube to bring up a tutorial. Or, if you have a specific celebrity in mind whose recent look you hope to emulate, you can type in their name and the event they were photographed at plus makeup to get the search started. From there, Google will serve up looks you can try using the camera on your mobile device. Below it, search will populate with links to where to buy some of the products associated with the look you want to pull off. Google also has partnerships with major clothing brands and retailers for a feature called Virtual Try-on, which also received an update. It uses Googles image diffusion technology to simulate how clothing would crease, drape, and form on real-life models of varying body types. Its finally been updated so you can see what pants look like with the rest of the outfit. You can try on pieces from brands like American Eagle, Everlane, and H&M before they arrive at your door. Shopping on the internet is no longer fun. It makes sense that Google would lean into this to sell us on the utility of its artificial intelligence. I like the idea in practice; Googles demonstration of Vision Match showed it to be easy to use and relatively straightforward. But were already concerned with how crowded the Google search results page is. This feature will debut on the mobile search app and live under the Shopping tab.

The riverside community has a strong tradition of building wooden boats, with this knowledge passed down through generations. However, due to a shortage of local labor, this craftsmanship was replaced by the design of a hotel that resembles an inverted boat.Hotel Bardo / Taller de Arquitectura VivaTulum, MexicoSave this picture! The architectural style represents contemporary Mexican constructions mixed with local materials of low ecological impact and blended with the surroundings, seeking to be part of the natural context of the Mayan jungle, aging alongside it.Image gallerySee allShow lessAbout this authorCamilla GhisleniAuthorCite: Ghisleni, Camilla. The river brings the stones, the air brings the ideas, and the light brings them to life. This is how the imagination for creating the new modern Catholic temple begins, the first of its kind in the Republic of Albania, designed and entirely built in Albania by an Albanian architect from local workers and materials.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The village where this temple is constructed is located near a river, and concrete is the most rational and suitable material in this landscape. Everywhere along the roads, you can see river pebbles because in the past, before the communist era, the river used to flow through this village. During the communist period, the village was relocated from above the river, to below the river, after a dam was built to divert the river to dry out the agricultural lands that were flooded in the Zadrima plain.Save this picture!Save this picture! The architect is from this village and has a Christian background. He received his architectural education at the "Mendrisio Academy of Architecture in Switzerland." He graduated under the mentorship of a world-renowned architect, Mario Botta, and spent over a year as a student of the 2009 'Pritzker Prize laureate, Peter Zumthor. Subsequently, he worked and collaborated with several different architecture studios in Switzerland, where he also emerged as a winner in several international competitions held within these studios. The concept for the realization of this project emerged as a result of this young boy's education and his strong desire to create something unique and beautiful, to bring hope to this village.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The realization of this building demonstrates that throughout this period of transition, no church or religious temple was ever constructed in this village, unlike many other nearby villages. It is incomprehensible and unexplained how this was the case, perhaps because there is a beautiful church from the 1880s in the neighboring village, built entirely from stone. The architect could have chosen more classical forms for this project or straight lines, but he didn't. He opted for a curved form that is always inclusive. The form of the object shouldn't have sharp corners or angles, so it doesn't oppose anyone. It is a self-contained structure, and when you enter, you experience an extraordinary atmosphere.Save this picture!Only by entering can you truly grasp what is inside. Some walls allow light to penetrate in only one direction. Stepping inside, you are taken back by the grandeur and height of this structure. As you approach the altar, the slope design of this structure creates a unique sensation, making you feel as though you are diminishing in size. In reality, when standing in front of the altar, you are 30 cm lower. It is a unique experience that the believers feel as they approach the altar of this temple.Save this picture! All the natural light is meticulously directed toward the altar. The warm wooden roof, resembling the purity of a lemon leaf, served as the inspiration for this architectural choice. A warm roof made of wood, pure like a lemon leaf, from where the inspiration derives from. Today, the church has truly become the new village center. Every resident in this village now enjoys a distinct view from their houses. Furthermore, the existence of this Catholic temple is noticeable from the neighboring villages, in the Diocese of Sapa, located in northern Albania within the Municipality of Vau i Dejes, specifically in the village of Nara.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Nara-Shkoder, AlbaniaLocation to be used only as a reference.
