• Do we all see red as the same colour? We finally have an answer

MindIt is impossible for us to know exactly how another person's experience of the world compares to our own, but a new experiment is helping to reveal that colour is indeed a shared phenomenon 6 March 2025 What does red look like?Image Professionals GmbH / AlamyDoes everyone experience colour in the same way? A new investigation into this long-standing philosophical question has provided the strongest evidence yet that people with typical colour vision do indeed share the same subjective experiences of colour.Putting our subjective conscious experiences into words is notoriously challenging, making it hard to directly compare how our reality lines up to someone elses, but researchers have previously tried various tricks to get around this. One technique,

  • 'Reacher' spinoff 'Neagley' will be out by the end of 2025 'with a bit of luck,' author Lee Child said

Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Jack Reacher's close friend in "Reacher," Frances Neagley, is getting her own eponymous spinoff. Maria Sten told Business Insider "Neagley" shows the character has a life outside of helping Reacher.Lee Child, the author of the "Jack Reacher" books, told BI the show might premiere at the end of 2025After the success of "Reacher" season three, the world of Jack Reacher is about to get bigger. The hero's close friend Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) is getting her own spinoff called (you guessed it) "Neagley."Like Reacher, Neagley is based on the books by British author Lee Child. She was a member of the Military Police's 110th Special Investigations unit, which Reacher led before he left the armed forces.Amazon announced the "Neagley" spinoff in October 2024 and confirmed that Maria Sten will lead the series."When she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell-bent on justice. "Using everything she's learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil," the show's synopsis reads.Speaking to Forbes last month, Ritchson joked that he couldn't confirm if he'd appear in "Neagley." "That would make sense, but we cannot confirm that it would make sense. It just makes sense in a world of hypotheticals."Like if he popped in for a couple of episodes. But it could happen."Sten spoke to Business Insider about "Neagley" ahead of the release of the latest season of "Reacher." Here's what to know.Maria Sten said 'Neagley' shows her character has a life outside of her relationship with Reacher Recalling how Neagley has developed in "Reacher" since 2022, Sten said: "When we first meet her, I think she's still sort of a stray dog, out of the military and finding her way in the world. Then, coming into season two, she definitely found her way in the world, at least in her professional life."I think season three is more of that, where we really see her established in her life in Chicago before she, of course, goes off to help Reacher."Sten continued: "I think that is a nice way to hand off the character from, 'Yes, I am living in this Reacher universe and I'm connected to him.' She has been showing up for him but also showing the world that yes, there's also a life outside of Reacher and she is actually running her own cases and doing her own thing and has her own problems as well, outside of helping the big guy!"So I think they did a lovely thing to honor the book and honor what Reacher is, but also honor Neagley's contribution so far and send her off on her own."'Neagley' does not have a release date yet, but Lee Child said it might arrive by the end of 2025 Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher and Maria Sten as Frances Neagley in "Reacher" season two. Brooke Palmer/Prime Video Amazon is still developing the spinoff, which doesn't have a release date. Neagley doesn't have dedicated books like Reacher, so that may explain why it is taking some time to develop. But co-showrunners Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton could adapt storylines from the five "Jack Reacher" books by Lee Child that Neagley appears in. In an interview with BI before the premiere of "Reacher" season three, Child suggested the show might debut at the end of 2025."They start shooting very soon, as a matter of fact! And I think I've seen the screenplays, I think it's going to be excellent, just as good as 'Reacher,' really," he said. "So you know, with a bit of luck, the 'Reacher'-verse will dominate the year on Amazon Prime both ends of it."'Riverdale' and 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'stars have been cast in 'Neagley'On February 25, Sten confirmed on Instagram that "Neagley" had started filming its first season. That day, Amazon named a handful of cast members who had joined the series, although little is known about their characters."Riverdale" star Greyston Holt will play Detective Hudson Riley alongside Adeline Rudolph, who appeared in "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and will play Renee."Mayor of Kingstown" actor Matthew Del Negro will play Pierce Woodrow, while "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood" actor Damon Herriman will play Lawrence Cole. Newcomer Jasper Jones has also been cast as Keno.

  • Salesforce cuts diversity hiring goals, joining Meta and Google in scaling back DEI initiatives
    www.businessinsider.com
2025-03-06T12:48:42Z Read in app Salesforce has become the latest tech firm to row back diversity goals. Eric Risberg /AP This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Salesforce has dropped diversity hiring targets from it's most recent annual financial disclosures. The company also removed references to diversity and inclusion as core company values.Salesforce joins the likes of Amazon, Google, Meta, and Walmart in rolling back DEI programs.Salesforce is the latest tech giant to abandon explicit diversity hiring targets. This comes in the wake of executive orders issued by President Donald Trump in January aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the federal government and its contractors. The San Francisco-based software giant filed its annual financial disclosures on Wednesday. The company removed language that outlined how some executive compensation was tied to employee diversity measures. The latest disclosures also omit explicit language describing diversity and inclusion as core company values, focusing solely on equality. "While we are not specifying representation goals, we remain committed to our core value of equality," a Salesforce spokesperson told Bloomberg when asked about the company's hiring process.Salesforce emphasized in the filing that its commitment to equality is "firmly rooted in compliance with federal law and other applicable laws and regulations in the regions in which we operate."In its filings, the company states: "We value the equality of every individual at our company and in our communities and are dedicated to fostering a workplace that complies with these protections, creating an inclusive culture where every individual feels seen, heard and valued."Salesforce's CEO Marc Benioff has previously set a high standard for supporting LGBTQ+ employees. In an interview with Axios last month, Benioff said, "If someone is going to come after our employees and discriminate against them in any way, we will do everything we can to help them."The rollback places Salesforce among several other major companies, including Amazon, Google, Walmart, Meta, Deloitte, and KPMG, who have recently scaled back or entirely discontinued diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. In a memo to staff in December, Amazon said it was "winding down outdated programs and materials" related to diversity and inclusion. The company also scrubbed prior references to diversity and inclusion from it's 2024 annual report released in February. Google removed hiring goals explicitly linked to diversity representation and Meta shuttered its DEI team and training programs. The leaked internal memo from Meta specifically references the shifting political and legal landscape around DEI policies. Business Insider has reported previously that since mid-2024 more than 20 major companies have rolled back DEI initiatives in the US.Salesforce representatives did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

  • What childhood was like before vaccines
    www.vox.com
This story originally appeared in Kids Today, Voxs newsletter about kids, for everyone. Sign up here for future editions. In the 19th century, it was incredibly dangerous to be a child. As of 1900, about 18 percent, or nearly one in five, American children died before their fifth birthday. The most common causes were infectious diseases pneumonia, diphtheria, dysentery, measles, and other illnesses ran rampant through households, and children were especially at risk.Cities, in particular, were cauldrons of infection, Samuel Preston, a demographer and co-author of the book Fatal Years: Child Mortality in Late Nineteenth-Century America, told me. But around the country, communicable diseases were rites of passage of childhood, some of them far worse than others, but all of them causing serious morbidity, and a lot of them causing death, said Howard Markel, a historian of medicine who has studied epidemics.Today, by contrast, less than 1 percent of children die before the age of 5, and until recently, once-common childhood diseases like measles were essentially unheard of in the US. What changed?Better sanitation and understanding of germ theory are part of the story, but one key factor thats transformed American childhood over the past century is the widespread adoption of vaccines. Today, children in the US are routinely vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, polio, some types of pneumonia and meningitis, and more. Other vaccines, including for typhoid, are in use around the world. This public health victory has saved hundreds of millions of lives and prevented billions of cases of disease. On a list of the 10 greatest hits of medicine, Markel said, at least nine would be vaccines. That message has been getting lost lately, thanks to a rise in anti-vaccine sentiment around the US and the world, exemplified most recently by the confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. one of the countrys most prominent vaccine skeptics, as the secretary of Health and Human Services. Just weeks into Kennedys tenure, a measles outbreak has sickened more than 100 people and killed an unvaccinated child in Texas, the first death from measles in the US in nearly a decade. In this time of falling vaccination rates and rising risks of preventable disease, I wanted to flash back to the long period of human history before vaccines were available. Childhood in the centuries before vaccination was marked by illness, yes, but also by grief and loss in a way that we tend to forget now that disease outbreaks are more of a rarity. Understanding that can teach us about the consequences, for families and society, of the choices we make today. When sickness and death were the normIn the years before vaccines, the prevalence of illness meant untimely death touched nearly every family. Most parents as late as 1900 could expect to lose at least one child to disease, Steven Mintz, a history professor at UT Austin who has studied childhood, told me in an email. That meant most children could expect to lose at least one sibling sometimes more, given the large families of the time.James Marten, a historian who has studied childhood, recalls a gravestone with three names on it in his familys local cemetery: They were my grandfathers sisters and brothers that all died within a week or two of each other, he told me.Theres a misconception that larger family size and the near-inevitability of childhood disease made the loss of a child less devastating for those who survived. In fact, parents suffered extraordinary grief when children died, Mintz said. After the death of her son Willie from typhoid fever in 1862, for example, Mary Todd Lincoln wrote in a letter, My question to myself is, can life be endured?Nor were children spared this grief. They might join in mourning a late-19th century photograph of heir Helen Frick as a young girl shows her wearing a locket containing a picture of her dead sister. They might also encounter constant reminders of their loss in the form of a new brother or sister with the deceased siblings name a common practice in a time of high infant mortality.Though sickness struck people from all walks of life, poor children and children of color faced additional risks. New sanitation infrastructure like sewers, that limited the spread of disease, were installed in wealthy, white neighborhoods first, leaving poorer families vulnerable, said Nancy Tomes, a history professor at Stony Brook University who has studied the history of disease. Hundreds of thousands of Native American children, meanwhile, were sent to boarding schools, often by force, where poor sanitation led to frequent disease outbreaks and a staggering number of deaths.Death and serious illness are staples of literature for and about children in the 19th century, often inspired by real-life loss. The illness and death of Beth, from complications of scarlet fever contracted from a baby, in Louisa May Alcotts Little Women mirror Alcotts own sisters death in 1858, writes pediatrician Perri Klass. Laura Ingalls Wilders older sister Mary went blind in 1879 (when Laura was 12 and Mary was 14), likely from meningoencephalitis, an episode that shows up in Wilders book By the Shores of Silver Lake: the fever had settled in Marys eyes, and Mary was blind. While many infectious diseases disproportionately affected children, adults died too, and in the 19th century, as many as half of all children could expect to lose a parent by the age of 21, Mintz said. The psychological toll was enormous. There was also an economic and practical toll. Widowed mothers and their children, unable to support themselves, often had to enter almshouses or poorhouses in the 19th century, Tomes said. If a mother died, the father might send the children to live with relatives, or to an orphanage, which were packed in this time, Tomes said. For those who got sick, meanwhile, the experience of disease itself could be painful and terrifying. Diphtheria, for example, causes a thick membrane to form at the back of the throat, making it very difficult to breathe. The disease was called the strangling angel, Mintz said. If children made it through the first phase, they might die six weeks later of heart failure, Markel said.Even the survivors of infectious diseases could face lifelong effects. Polio, for example, could lead to paralysis, and some children spent weeks, months, or even years encased in an iron lung to help them breathe. (One of the last users of an iron lung, Paul Alexander, died last year after over 70 years with the device.) Devastating though they could be, endemic diseases like measles became expected in the years before widespread vaccination: it was a fact of childhood life that you were going to get sick with one of these, Markel said.Polio, which arrived in the US in the late 19th century and led to more isolated, unpredictable outbreaks, caused more fear, Markel said. Parents kept children out of school, swimming pools, and movie theaters. It very much shapes your daily life and what you do entirely once people learn about these things, Merle Eisenberg, a history professor at Oklahoma State University who studies pandemics, told me.The polio vaccine, introduced in 1955, put an end to those fears. Today, its one of a series of vaccinations that, together, allow most children in wealthy countries to grow up free from the infectious diseases that sickened and killed so many of their forebears. We take it for granted the opportunities and the possibilities that children now have, Eisenberg said. These diseases arent gone, however. In higher-poverty countries where vaccine distribution is more of a challenge, preventable diseases still claim childrens lives, Rashida Ferrand, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropic Medicine, told me. Cases of diphtheria are on the rise in Pakistan, and polio remains endemic there and in Afghanistan. As the Texas measles outbreak shows, the diseases that devastated families for centuries can come back here too. And remembering the history of childhood before vaccines is especially critical now, experts say a time when vaccination is being widely questioned, and the rampant disease and grief of the last several millennia of human history have faded from public memory (Covid pandemic notwithstanding). Its a past that we have largely forgotten, and it is so wretched a prospect, we should have it in mind as a possibility if we go down this road, Preston said. What Im readingThis years flu season has been especially devastating for children, but doctors say vaccination can help protect kids from severe illness. The New York Times asked eight kids what they took with them when they evacuated from the Los Angeles wildfires; results include a sword and a turtle named Turtleicious.Peppa Pig, the popular TV character who has taught a generation of American toddlers to speak in British English, is getting a new baby sibling. This week my little kid and I are enjoying Fifteen Animals!, a Sandra Boynton classic with a SHOCKING TWIST.From my inboxIn response to my story last week on trad kids, a reader wrote in about growing up as the second-oldest of five children in a religious home, forced to essentially school myself from the age of probably 13 using books or computer programs. • What Americans really think of Trump’s Ukraine policy
    www.vox.com
President Donald Trump has completely upended Americas position on the Ukraine-Russia war, shocking the foreign policy establishment by turning on the fledgling democracy while making friendly overtures to Russia, Ukraines invader. The US has provided about half of the total $136 billion in military support Ukraine has received from its allies since Russia invaded in 2022. But this week, Trump made the abrupt decision to pause all US aid to Ukraine and end the two countries intelligence-sharing relationship following an explosive Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. That has come as a shock to the foreign policy establishment in Washington and to US allies around the world, who have long seen defending Ukrainian sovereignty as key to protecting European security and Western democratic ideals. Even Trumps own Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a longtime Ukraine supporter, has reportedly been caught by surprise by the dramatic changes coming from the White House.Outside of Washington, however, US support for Ukraine was never as popular with voters as it was with elected officials. And many Republicans and independents are cheering Trump on, having long been skeptical of funding a foreign war. Trump isnt necessarily reacting to public opinion, having personal reasons for distancing himself from Zelenskyy: Recall the infamous 2019 phone call with the Ukrainian president that led to Trumps impeachment. But Trumps posture toward Ukraine is emblematic of his transactional, isolationist approach to US foreign policy that seems to resonate with broad swaths of the US electorate if not Beltway elites. How Washington and US public opinion diverged and converged again on Ukraine Immediately following Russias invasion in 2022, Ukraine had fierce defenders even among Republican members of Congress, and Americans broadly supported Ukraine on a bipartisan basis. That March, 42 percent of Americans thought the US wasnt providing enough aid to Ukraine, including 49 percent of Republican-leaning voters, according to a Pew Research survey. Within a few months, however, that support started to wane among Republican voters. By that fall, only 16 percent of Republican-leaning voters thought the US wasnt providing enough support; 32 percent thought it was offering too much. In 2024, poll after poll showed support for Ukraine further collapsed among Republicans and independents. That coincided with Trumps growing criticism of Ukraine and the European response to the war on the 2024 campaign trail. He pledged to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, as well as to force European nations to pay the US back for its billions in military aid to Ukraine. He claimed that Zelenskyy was a salesman who had persuaded the US to offer unending financial support to Ukraine. And he continued to threaten to withdraw from NATO, which would leave Europe without security guarantees in the face of an emboldened Russia. Since his reelection, Trump has gone even further in echoing Russian talking points, accusing Zelenskyy of being a dictator without elections and falsely claiming that Ukraine started the war. Zelenskyy was elected in 2019, and elections have not been held in Ukraine since the Russian invasion because the country remains under martial law. Polls conducted in the last month show stark partisan divides on whether and under what conditions the US should help Ukraine, with Republicans and independents backing Trumps approach in large numbers. In a CBS/YouGov poll, 68 percent of Republicans and 49 percent of independents said that the US should not send military aid to Ukraine. Only 28 percent of Democrats said the same. A Gallup poll found that 54 percent of Republicans, 56 percent of independents, and 84 percent of Democrats had a favorable view of Ukraine.A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found that majorities of Republican and independent voters approve of Trump negotiating directly with Russia to end the war in Ukraine. Democrats and independents, however, mostly did not support leaving Ukrainian and European leaders out of those discussions, whereas Republicans did. The poll also found that most Republicans and independents think that any security guarantees for Ukraine should be contingent on the country sharing its revenues from mining rare earth elements with the US, whereas most Democrats disagree. Neither a majority of Democrats nor independents said that they think that Ukraine should be forced to make territorial concessions as part of a peace deal; a majority of Republicans did. Former Russia hawks in the GOP have gone quietRepublican lawmakers and administration officials, meanwhile, have fallen into line behind Trumps agenda.Republican lawmakers are opposing another round of Ukraine aid as part of budget negotiations. Even Rubio thanked Trump for putting America first on X after the Oval Office meeting with Zelenskyy and criticized the Ukrainian president for trying to Ukraine-splain on every issue in an interview with ABC. Other former Ukraine defenders in Congress have since changed their tune. They include Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who recently suggested that Zelenskyy should resign, and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who pushed former President Joe Biden to send more weapons to Ukraine before later claiming that Biden tempted Putin into invading Ukraine.Thats brought them closer to the views of everyday Americans. But it may come at a price not just for Ukraine, but also for the Western world order, which Europe may now stand alone in defending against Russian aggression. See More:

  • GTA 6 price rumours continue as one expert tips 'most anticipated game ever' to cost 80
    www.dailystar.co.uk
GTA 6 could cost much more than a regular game, another expert predicts, so you better start saving for Rockstar Games' next big open-world adventure now here's all we knowTech11:11, 06 Mar 2025How much would you pay for a trip to Vice City?(Image: Rockstar)Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be this year's biggest entertainment release (if it does launch in 2025), but it could cost a pretty penny. We've heard before how Take-Two and Rockstar pricing the game higher could help 'save' the games industry, and while some have said it's unlikely, another analyst has said it's not as crazy as it sounds.Michael Pachter, Managing Director of Equity Research at Wedbush Securities, published a research note earlier this week that suggests Rockstar could end up charging $100 (around 80) for what could be the biggest release in gaming history with GTA Online helping to entice players.GTA 6 is still coming this year (apparently)(Image: Rockstar)We think the company has plans to sell the game at a previously unheard-of price point, and suspect that management can offer consumers an incentive to pay $100 or more per unit by rewarding them with a large amount of in-game currency to be spent in GTA Online, the research note explains (thanks, VGC).There is precedent for integrating an online game experience with a premium game, as Activision did so with both Call of Duty Warzone and Call of Duty Mobile content prior to the release of its annual Call of Duty premium instalment, Pachter added. In Activisions case, the integration led to a 40% increase in sales of Call of Duty premium; in Take-Twos case, we think a successful integration of GTA Online and GTA VI can lead to a $100 price point for the premium game.Article continues belowIt's unlikely GTA 6 needs any additional help, but given we heard GTA Online could be offered as a standalone product, there could be other ways for players to get in without paying a higher price. For more on GTA, be sure to check out the news that Rockstar has acquired a new studio, or the latest map 'leak' that dwarfs GTA 5's Los Santos. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

  • The Last Of Us co-creator has bad news for fans about Part 3
    metro.co.uk
The Last Of Us co-creator has bad news for fans about Part 3Michael BeckwithPublished March 6, 2025 11:09amUpdated March 6, 2025 11:09am Maybe its time to let Ellie rest (Sony)While the TV show still has at least one more season in it, it sounds like The Last Of Us fans shouldnt hold their breath for any new games. Its been commonly assumed that The Last Of Us Part 3 will be a thing at some point, especially after the series notoriety ballooned thanks to the TV show and the last game ended on a relatively ambiguous note. However, series co-creator and creative director Neil Druckmann has flipped back and forth on the possibility and its been difficult to be tell whether hes being honest or just coy.In 2021, Druckmann said he had an outline for a third games plot, but he seemed to have lost interest by 2023, saying the sequel would only happen if it had a compelling story. Then, in 2024, he said he had finally landed on an exciting concept, adding there was probably one more chapter to the story. Now, it appears Druckmann has flipped the other way again, going so far as to suggest that he and developer Naughty Dog are very much done with The Last Of Us altogether.Recently, Druckmann and his fellow executive producer on The Last Of Us TV show, Craig Mazin, sat down with Variety to discuss the upcoming second season, which will be adapting the storyline of The Last Of Us Part 2.Naturally, the subject of The Last Of Us Part 3 was brought up, which Druckmann sounds tired of hearing about, given the big sigh he apparently let out in response.I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is dont bet on there being more of Last Of Us. This could be it, was all Druckmann said, implying not just that therell never be a third game, but that there may be no new The Last Of Us games period.Even the TV show isnt intended to last forever. Although the second games more expansive plot means Druckmann and Mazin plan to split it across multiple seasons, they havent decided how many are required and it likely wont be many.It feels like weve got one or two more seasons, said Mazin. Its getting harder to make, because every episode gets big. You dont want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is.What is Naughty Dog making next?As far as video games go, Druckmann is far more preoccupied with Naughty Dogs next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Announced during The Game Awards last year, its set to be another action adventure title, albeit with an 80s inspired sci-fi setting.Naughty Dog has said that it has at least one other single-player game in development, but it now sounds like that isnt The Last Of Us Part 3.More TrendingPart of the problem may simply be the amount of time it takes to make new games. Depending on when work started, Intergalactic probably wont be out for two or three years and if it was to start from scratch now The Last Of Us Part 3 would take at least five or six years to make.Especially given he seems more interested in TV and movies at the moment, Druckmann may be concerned at the idea of spending such a huge amount of time working on yet another sequel which is one of the reasons why the God Of War reboot has just two games set in Scandinavia, instead of the originally intended trilogy.Naughty Dog has already insisted that it will never work on another Uncharted game, even though Sony is rumoured to be bringing in other developers to make one, and The Last Of Us may end up in a similar situation.Although attempts at a multiplayer spin-off have already failed, and Naughty Dog will likely try to prevent anyone else making a direct sequel, spin-offs and titles set in the same universe, but with different characters, do seem a strong possibility. Maybe Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will become the new hotness whenever it comes out (Sony)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • WWE 2K25 review The Bloodline ushers in new era for wrestling games
    metro.co.uk
Roman Reigns is at the heart of WWE 2K25 (2K)WWE 2K25 is using the legacy of The Bloodline as the theme for this years new game, as it tries to keep the revived series on its winning streak. After last years WWE 2K24 was hailed as one of the best wrestling game ever made it left developer Visual Concepts with the tall task of delivering something even more special for the next game.Annual sports franchises always struggle not to feel like the same game with a new lick of paint and while the fast-paced world of WWE means each year will feel different, with roster changes and new matches, the developers still need to do something special to justify the hefty price tag each year.Thankfully for fans, they have achieved that this year. The Bloodline take centre stage in this new game, both in a revised Showcase mode and as part of The Island, a new open world style mode which will be familiar to fans of the NBA 2K franchise who have played The City.Throw in Bloodline Rules matches, new Backstage Brawls featuring the Easter egg-packed WWE Archives level, and the expansion of Special Guest Referee to numerous match types and theres a lot to get excited about here.Lets start with The Island, WWEs big new online mode which is an exclusive for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. With Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns as your guide, the mode sees you create a new superstar gunning for a WWE contract. The world which is a good size for this first effort is split into different areas styled after the likes of The Undertaker, Asuka, and Roman himself. We only saw a couple of other users in the game world pre-launch, but the idea is that it will be filled with other players once the game is released to the public. We still saw enough to get a feel for the mode though, with challenges and live events leading to unlockables, along with different storylines as you chase your goal. The population of gamers will determine its replayability, but even with no one else in there, we found plenty to do and explore, with the virtual currency easy to earn and use on cosmetics items. For gameplay, the graphics and animations are slicker and smoother than ever, enhanced by the bruising and sweat system, and blood staining the mat as matches go on. The return of Chain Wrestling to the franchise is very welcome, with a simple joystick mini-game seeing wrestlers tussle for control.Combined with last years Trading Blows mini-game, its another element of WWE action brought to life. Similarly, Barricade Dives are a fun feature, adding more depth to the interactivity of the ringside area. The new Giant weight class also adds another layer, with the hulking superstars moving differently, and even having another purple health bar to deplete before you can take them off their feet. The Island feels like a living, breathing world (2K)Visually, the game looks great and the team deserve praise for already having the new-look Raw on Netflix and SmackDown arenas (the former only unveiled in January), so you dont have to wait until next year for those. The so-called Third Person Camera (we know its all third person, but now its more over your shoulder) is a fun way to appreciate the visuals in entrances, plus it gives you full control during matches. In terms of new matches, Bloodline Rules is the big one here and it delivers the chaotic action the bouts are famous for in WWE. Two superstars start the match and during the bout each will get to trigger a Bloodline Rules Payback move, which brings another wrestler down to join the fight. Each superstar gets three each, and there are all new animations and commentary to enhance the experience. We tried a few of these, and got a real mix of stars coming out for a bout between CM Punk and Roman Reigns the interferences pulled from the Tribal Chiefs allies and rivals, while a random bout between Rob Van Dam and Chelsea Green saw the latter joined by Piper Niven, before stars like Liv Morgan evened the score. The game has WWEs newest arenas already represented (Picture: 2K / Metro)The other new match this year is Underground, which redefines how combat works, with Visual Concepts exploring the idea that the ring doesnt have ropes, opening the door to new moves and motions. The presentation is spot on too, with fans around the ring. For Backstage Brawls, the NXT Parking Lot has a ton of interactive elements (which even includes a sheet for glass positioned over four chairs), while the team have teased upwards for 60 Easter eggs for the WWE Archive. We spotted nods to everyone from Bray Wyatt and Elias to Undertaker and Bret Hart, along with the SmackDown fist. Fans of 2002s WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth should head there for a real dose of nostalgia. This years Showcase feels like a sizeable step forward for the game, as Paul Heyman assumes his position as Wiseman to take you through the history of The Bloodline dynasty, ranging from obvious members like The Rock and Roman Reigns to the likes of Naomi and Nia Jax, by way of The Wild Samoans and Three Minute Warning. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a webbrowser thatsupports HTML5videoUp NextThis time, the matches in the mode are split into three types, encouraging you to relive, change or make history, with the latter featuring dream matches. Its a welcome change to the mode, opening up new possibilities for the future and resulting in some fascinating match-ups and unlockables in the form of wrestlers, arenas, and more. The timed objectives add another challenge too, while the decision to scrap the SlingShot technology, which blended real-life and in-game footage, in favour of sticking with the latter really helps with the immersion. For MyRise, the introduction of inter-gender wrestling plays a big role. Rather than separate storylines for male and female superstars, this year the mode features a single storyline that sees Bayley, Kevin Owens, and others using NXT to try and take control of WWE.The voice acting and storylines are as engaging as ever, with new personality choices impacting what storylines are available to you, plus branching choices for dialogue which also has a big impact. The WWE Archives backstage brawl is a treasure trove for fans (2K/Metro)Youll create a male and female superstar for this mode (you choose which comes first, and how they are linked), with a wealth of reasons to go back and replay with a different focus.Elsewhere, the Universe sandbox mode includes the return of Promos to add another layer, while MyGm introduces online multiplayer for up to four players.MyFaction sees the return of Persona Cards, which can be carried over to all other game modes, although previously some complained about how difficult it was to unlock certain cards without paying real money for them.More TrendingWith 50 new stages and World Tour replacing Proving Grounds, the mode has more of a non-linear feel now, along with new community events and themed cards. Of course, currency can still be unlocked by grinding, but the use of microtransactions is still very unwelcome. Finally, this years roster takes things up a level to over 300 superstars, along with five DLC packs over the next eight months featuring everyone from TNA Wrestling legend Abyss to new Raw arrival Penta with the latter available in May despite only making his WWE debut less than eight weeks ago. While some changes and improvements are more subtle, and the full impact of The Island remains to be seen, this does feel like another big step forward for the franchise, building on last years incredible effort with another wrestling juggernaut.WWE 2K25 review summaryIn Short: It had a tough task following up last years incredible effort, but with the injection of The Bloodline this new entry becomes another top notch wrestling game.Pros: The gameplay is more fluid and immersive than ever, with new matches and enhancements across the board. The Island is a fun addition, while MyRise and Showcase get a welcome boost.Cons: MyFactions microtransactions still dont sit right, while the creation suites could do more (particularly in terms of arenas) to help creators.Score: 9/10Formats: Xbox Series X/S (reviewed), Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PCPrice: 64.99Publisher: 2KDeveloper: Visual ConceptsRelease Date: 14th March 2025 (early access from 7th March)Age Rating: 16 Chain wrestling adds to the immersion in a big way (2K/Metro)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter.
